In just over a generation, the United States bentonite industry has grown from almost a rake and shovel operation into one with a multimillion ton annual production rate and exports to all corners of the globe. Bentonite production, pressed to keep pace with the soaring demand, has increased more than 10 fold in the last 30 years. The worldwide demand for bentonite is expected to double during the next eight to ten years. It remains to be seen whether U.S. producers will be able to maintain the dominant position in the world market. It should be noted that accurate statistical information regarding production or market information is difficult or impossible to obtain abroad and also within the United States. Published information obtained in response to questionnaires of the Bureau of Mines tends to be on the conservative side. FOUNDRY It has only been in the last thirty or forty years that bentonite has become an indispensible part of the age old metal casting industry. The relationship has proven most beneficial to both industries and promises to be long lasting. Bentonite and newly discovered deposits of sepiolite, saponite, and hectorite are now being processed and marketed from the Amargosa Valley of Nevada. All of these deposits are large. The bentonite has been known for decades and is the whitest known. The only other sepiolite deposit is in Spain. The only other commercial hectorite deposit is at Hector, California. No other saponite deposit is known. All the components except bentonite are hydrous magnesium silicates. The bentonite is mixed layer Na-Ca. All the materials have characteristics unique to their locale and type, such as high yield point for drilling muds and liquid suspending agents. The sepiolite has geothermal stability. Figure 1.

"The property is about 120 miles north of Red Lake in the Favourable Lake area, district of Kenora ( Patricia part) , Ontario. The original discovery was staked by K. Murray in December, 1927. The first development work was done by the Favourable Lake Mining and Exploration Company. In 1936 Newmont Mining Corporation acquired control of the property and developed it to production by September, 1939. Production to the end of 1945 had a value of $7,534,656 from 441,457 tons of ore, an average value of $17.04 a ton . This production was mainly from gold and silver, with lead and zinc of subordinate importance.The rocks in the vicinity of the mine trend in a north-south direction. From east to west the sequence is: (1) A dark-coloured, massive rock, presumably a flow, composed mainly of quartz and biotite. ( 2) A buff- coloured, scricitized rock locally containing quartz phenocrysts and black hornblende. This is an alteration product of the dark variety and is later than the folding. It occurs mainly within the dark rock. (3) A series of sediments comprising thin beds of greywacke, grit, quartzite, conglomerate, and iron formation. ( 4) A gabbro sill, now largely altered to amphibolite.With the exception of the buff type, these rocks dip 80°E. The buff rock has a very irregular outline in comparison with the other rocks and appears to dip somewhat more flatly east. Felsite and diorite dykes are also present. These have a general strike of S.60°E. and dip 65°S .W. A post-ore diorite dyke trending N.15°E. occurs about 2,000 feet east of the mine area."

ABSTRACT: The Berg Bock Freeway Tunnel represents the southernmost link of the "Thuringian tunnel chain" of the new freeway A71 located in the eastern part of Germany. It comprises two tubes each 2700 m in length. From north to south, it passes through the Suhl granite, the base sediments and the porphyrite of the New Red as well as the layers of the Middle Bunter. The two tunnel tubes were driven by the shotcrete method within appr. 10 months. With four tunnel faces, maximum performances totalling appr. 30 m/d were attained. Additional, supplementary demands on the safety conception, resulting from the findings from and the analysis of fire accidents in tunnels in recent years, had to be fulfilled in the execution planning at short notice. The inner lining is largely constructed using non-reinforced concrete. Reinforcement is only installed in the portal zones, in tunnel sections in less stable rock and in areas with a special cross-section as for instance cross connections and niches. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Autobahntunnel Berg Bock stellt das südlichste Glied der "Thüringer Tunnelkette" auf der Autobahn A71 dar, die im Osten von Deutschland liegt. Er besteht aus zwei Röhren von je 2700 m Länge. Vom Norden nach Süden durchörtert er den Suhler Granit, die Basissedimente und den Porphyrit des Rotliegenden, sowie die Schichten des Mittleren Buntsandsteins. Die beiden Tunnelröhren wurden in Spritzbetonbauweise in einer Bauzeit von etwa zehn Monaten aufgefahren. An vier Vortriebsorten wurden Spitzenleistungen von insgesamt etwa 30 m/d erzielt. Ergänzende Anforderungen an das Sicherheitskonzept, die sich auf der Grundlage der Auswertung der in den letzten Jahren aufgetretenen Brandunfälle in Tunneln ergeben haben, wurden im Rahmen der Ausführungsplanung kurzfristig berücksichtigt. Die Tunnelinnenschale wurde weitgehend aus nicht bewehrtem Beton hergestellt. Nur in den Portalzonen, in Tunnelabschnitten mit weniger standsicherem Fels und in Bereichen mit speziellen Querschnitten, wie beispielsweise im Bereich von Querstollen und Nischen, wurde bewehrter Beton ausgeführt. RÉSUMÉ: Le tunnel d'autoroute de Berg Bock représente le plus méridional maillon de la "chaîne thuringienne de tunnels" sur l'autoroute A71 dans l'est de l'Allemagne. Il se compose de deux tubes d'une longueur de 2700 m chacun. Du nord vers le sud, il traverse le granit de Suhl, les sédiments de base et le porphyrite du Rotliegendes, aussi que les strates du grès bigarré intermédiaire. Les deux tubes étaient creusés en méthode de construction de béton projeté dans une période de construction d'environ dix mois. À quatre fronts de taille rendements maximaux collectifs d'environ 30 m par jour étaient obtenus. This paper describes two-lane dual motorway tunnels under construction in Bergen. The tunnels are part of a by-pass motorway system throuth the most congested area of the city of Bergen. The tunnels are unique due to their length, heavy traffic, longitudinal ventilation system and the use of a tunnel boring machine, or "TBM", to excavate through hard rock. The tunnels are being built by The Norwegian Public Road Administration and the TBM was delivered by the Robbins Company. The diameter of the TBM is 7.8 m and the tunnel profile is cut by conventional drill and blasting methods in the tunnel's lower half to attain a two lane motorway tunnel. This paper also describes proposed fjord crossings along the Norwegian west coast where the TBM may be used due to its great advantages in comparison to conventional drill and blasting methods.

2001, the New Jersey Transit Authority commissioned the JV Merco-Obayashi with the rehabilitation contract of the approximately 130-year-old, 4,200 ft long, partially brick- lined Bergen North Tunnel. The contract entailed the tunnel enlargement, shotcrete and rock dowels initial support according to the NATM, a waterproofing system, tunnel drainage and a cast-in-place concrete lining. The rock conditions encountered required design adaptations and significant modifications of the initial tunnel support. Flexibility, skill and extensive experience on the Authority’s and Contractor’s side finally lead to a success. This paper describes the operations and design modifications carried out.

The vertical travel lead, referred to as "VTL" system, was first developed and patented by C.W. Bermingham in the 1970's. This lead system was developed in response to the fundamental limitations of either a fixed lead or hanging lead system. The fixed lead system is well suited to level job sites with few obstructions and has the advantage of faster positioning of the lead, the hanging lead is very adaptable to different elevations and batter piles but takes much longer to position. Therefore the Vertical Travel Lead was developed to combine the advantages of fixed leads, fast and accurate positioning, with the ability to adjust the height of the lead base up or down. The VTL lead is connected to the boom by a sliding connection which allows the lead to be elevated or lowered below grade. The advantages of the VTL system were recognized by many foundation specialists and they have become the Industry standard in Canada , US Railway Construction , and many parts of the USA.

The thirty year old wharf structures at the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey?s Port Elizabeth Marine Terminal are being modernized for the next generation of Post-Panamax container ships, which require deeper water and larger container cranes. The terminal operator is upgrading the wharf in order to remain competitive, now and into the future. The upgrade coincides with the Army Corps of Engineers? $733 million project to deepen the main shipping channel in New York Harbor. This paper focuses on the structural modifications to accommodate berth deepening and to support the heavier loads of the new cranes. An overview is provided of the design and actual construction, including typical problems encountered when combining new and existing structures. The wharf improvements included: ? Installation of a steel king pile/sheet pile cutoff wall along the face of the wharf to permit increasing the depth from ?12.2 m + 0.61 m to ?15.2 m + 0.61 m ( ?40 ft + 2 ft to ?50 ft + 2 ft) ? Removal of the existing crane rail support beams and installation of new piles and beams to support the increased crane loads ? Replacement of the existing timber fender system with a new system capable of resisting the berthing energy of a 152,000 MT displacement vessel, and having dedicated sections for berthing barges ? Replacing the existing overhead, landside crane electric feeder system with a waterside, cable reel trench system. The work included upgrading the transformer capacity at the terminal for increased crane power demands This paper provides a case history for port administrators, terminal operators, engineers, and shipping lines challenged with upgrading aging terminals.

"Seattle Tunnel Partners (STP) started mining on Seattle’s SR99 tunnel on July 30, 2013, working slowly through a 15 ft (4.6 m) thick fiber-reinforced concrete headwall. Once through the headwall, the machine would move through roughly 400 lineal ft (122 m) of jet grout-improved soil at a rate slightly over 6 ft (1.8 m) per day. It was anticipated that once through the improved area, Bertha—the world’s largest tunnel boring machine—would move at a rate of 35 ft (10.7 m) per day. By the end of October 2013, Bertha had mined roughly 430 ft (131 m), averaging 4.73 ft (1.4 m) per day, and had begun mining within native soils. By the start of December 2013, tunneling reached the 800 ft (244 m) mark and Bertha averaged 12 ft (3.7 m) per day, achieving as much as 42 ft (12.8 m) of progress on some days. However, on December 6, 2013, Bertha began to stumble and all progress quickly came to a halt. Preliminary InvestigationInitial reports stated that an obstruction had stopped the machine in its tracks. Malcolm Drilling received an early morning call on Sunday, December 8, 2013, from STP to rapidly mobilize a Bauer BG-50 drill rig with crews to investigate what was hindering Bertha’s progress. Malcolm’s equipment and crews flew into action and were completely mobilized and operational by mid-week. The preliminary investigation involved installation of 10 deep dewatering wells to reduce the hydrostatic head within the ground around the machine and allow STP personnel to inspect the cutter head from within the shaft for presence of obstructions. By the close of December 2013, the wells were installed and the dewatering system was fully commissioned. STP crews were then able to inspect the cutter head and found small fragments of a steel pipe wrapped around the outside of the shield. The steel was apparently from an abandoned 10 in (0.25 m) diameter monitoring well casing previously installed by WSDOT (Washington State Department of Transportation) to monitor groundwater conditions for the design and planning of this very project. After the steel was cut out of the head and cleared from Bertha’s path, she attempted to move forward but was only able to manage a slow crawl"

Just prior to the close of the century, the Mine Safety and Health Review Commission issued its long-awaited decision in Berwind Natural Resources et al. vs. Secretary of Labor[1] to usher in the new millennium. The case arose as a result of a mine explosion in Eastern Kentucky resulting in the US Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA) issuance of 225 citations, not only to the contractor but to four affiliated entities of Berwind Corp. While an Administrative Law Judge dismissed citations to three of the four Berwind entities, MSHA and the remaining Berwind entity appealed the case to the commission. Although the commission effectively left intact the administrative law judge's decision, it announced a new theory of liability that would apparently be applied in the future, namely the unitary operator theory.

ALTHOUGH the element beryllium was discovered as the oxide by L. N. Vauquelin in 1797, this metallic element was not produced until about 1828, and then only as an impure powder. Thereafter the greatest single contributor to our early knowledge of beryllium was Lebeau who, in about 1899, made pure beryllium crystals by electrolysis of the fluoride and then beryllium copper by the arc-furnace reduction of beryllium oxide with carbon and copper. About twenty-five years later, under the impetus of the work done by Siemens-Halske, beryllium commenced to make relatively rapid gains in industrial importance, principally when alloyed with copper. At the present half century mark, its use is firmly established in beryllium copper and in X-ray disks of pure beryllium. Its use as a moderator in nuclear processes in piles is engaging experimental attention and might become important. Other minor uses, but increasing in interest, are in nickel-base or iron-base alloys as a strengthening agent; as a protective agent against oxidation in aluminum and magnesium-base alloys; and as a ceramic in the form of the pure fused oxide. A false start was made in the wide use of beryllium oxide as a fired fluorescent powder known as beryllium-zinc silicate, a component of the inside coating of fluorescent lamps. This application, wherein general use by the public attained some importance, was abandoned a few years ago. This action was a consequence of the uneasiness which had been generated during the past decade by the sometimes fatal health hazard to the pulmonary tract now generally attributed to beryllium and some of its compounds. Markets and Production Beryllium (Be), an extremely light metal, is used in many specialty applications. It the lightest element in Group 2A of the periodic table, with a specific gravity of 1.85 gm/cc, and a high melting point of 12850C (Calvert, 2004). The functional properties of beryllium are stiffness, strength, dimensional stability, resistance to corrosion from acids, and electrical and thermal conductivity. The ability to reflect neutrons and transmit x-rays, makes beryllium irreplaceable in uses such as precision optical components, inertial guidance systems, and in nuclear reactors (Anon, 1993). Beryllium is used in Cu alloys to strengthen and reduce corrosion in copper wire, and in lightweight oxide ceramics that are used as heat sinks, and as electrical insulators. The market revenue of beryllium can be broken down into the seven major groups below, and are plotted on the pie chart in Figure 1 (Anon, 2005). 1.) Telecommunications & Computer 2.) The world-famous beryllium deposits at Spor Mountain, northwest of Delta, Utah, are the principal resource of beryllium in the United States. Beryllium metal, beryllium-metal alloys, and beryllium oxide ceramics have a long history of specialty applications. Beryllium is used in X-ray windows, nuclear reactors: and a wide variety of industrial and electronic products. The Spor Mountain deposits are located on the western rim of the Thomas caldera, one of at least three volcanic depressions that subsided during voluminous eruption of rhyolitic ash-flow tuff in early Oligocene time. Beginning in early Miocene time, the caldera rim and its volcanic fill were cut extensively by basin-and-range faults. Basin-and-range faulting was accompanied by local eruption of high-silica rhyolite. High-silica topaz rhyolites at Spor Mountain (21 Ma) and Topaz Mountain (6 to 7 Ma) are especially rich in fluorine and lithophile trace elements such as beryllium. Topaz rhyolite of the Miocene Spor Mountain Formation, or its magma was the source of the Spor Mountain beryllium deposits. At Spor Mountain, deposits of beryllium, as submicroscopic bertrandite, Be4Si207(OH)2, occur in rhyolite tuff beneath flows and domes of topaz rhyolite. The beryllium deposits also contain minor disseminated fluorite, lithium, uranium, and anomalous traces of other lithophile elements. The host tuff, originally composed of glass, zeolite, and abundant clasts of carbonate rock, has been altered to clay and potassium feldspar. Fluorite, quartz, and opal replaced carbonate clasts in the tuff. Beryllium was deposited with fluorite in altered clasts and in the matrix of altered tuff. Fluorspar and uranium deposits are spatially and genetically associated with the beryllium deposits at Spor Mountain. Fluorspar deposits at Spor Mountain occur mostly in breccia pipes. Some fluorspar pipes contain uranium, thought to be dispersed in the structure of fluorite. Secondary uranium minerals are dispersed throughout the tuff that hosts beryllium deposits and comprise lenses of ore-grade uranium at the Yellow Chief mine.

DEVELOPMENTS respecting beryllium during the past year have been sufficient to center attention on it as likely to be the most important of any of the chemical elements that have recently found a place for themselves in technical industry. This importance is only potential, however, largely because adequate supplies of beryllium ore will be necessary. The beryllium industry will be only as great as the mines which support it. To find and develop large mines will be the problem. Chief of the immediate commercial developments in the United States is beryllium-copper and its espousal by Anaconda and Riverside even at present high prices. According to the pamphlets of these companies, it ap¬pears that beryllium is to copper nearly what carbon is to iron. When one considers that the tensile strength of pure copper is about 33,000 lb. per sq. in., but that the addition of 1.5 to 2.5 per cent of beryllium produces a heat-treatable alloy with a maximum tensile strength of 220,000 lb. or over, the analogy to carbon and iron is made strikingly, clear. Striking among the properties of beryllium-copper is its resistance to fatigue, claimed to be equal or superior to that of spring steel. It needs little imagination to foresee a great industry for this alloy alone.

Although beryllium was initially discovered in 1797, it was not until 1916 that the first significant quantity of beryllium metal ingot was produced in the United States. Before 1940, most of the small quantity of beryllium metal used in the United States was supplied by Germany. Beryllium was not used in its metallic form; it was used as an alloying addition to other metals, mainly copper and nickel. World consumption of beryllium at that time was estimated to be a few hundred kilograms annually. Because of increased tensions in Europe before World War II, imports of metal from Germany ceased in 1940, and domestic production was required to meet the needs of the military. As a result, by 1946, the United States became the principal supplier of beryllium products for the world, a condition that prevails today. Because of beryllium's high strength, light weight, and high thermal conductivity, it has been used in a large number of industrial and defense applications as a metal, alloy, and oxide. The United States is the only country other than China and the former USSR currently producing beryllium products from beryllium ores and concentrates. Bertrandite, mined in Utah, is the principal ore source of domestically produced products. Imported ore, mainly from Brazil, supplements domestic ore supplies. Production and consumption data for the United States is shown in [Figs. 1 and 2]. Production data for 1969-1979 is withheld to avoid disclosing company proprietary data.

IN January, 1926, the writer began a study of the commercial value of beryllium in its relation to copper. The purpose of the investigation was not to make a mere laboratory study of the characteristics of beryllium-copper alloys, but to determine under mill conditions the behavior of copper when alloyed with beryllium and when other metals were added to such alloys; in other words, it was considered important to know whether the alloy bars could be hot-rolled or cold-worked, and what limits in composition would have to be established for these two methods of working. Consequently, more stress has been placed on the practical application of the alloys in engineering and commercial use than on a discussion of the metallography of the specimens examined, although this part of the matter has not been entirely neglected. Credit should be first given to G. Oesterheld,1 who, in 1916, published the copper-beryllium equilibrium diagram. Fig. 1 has been copied from the original article with the simple substitution of English words. It will be noted from Fig. 1 that alpha solid solutions are formed, up to about 1.5 per cent. Be (10.5 atom.). The freezing-point curve, after falling from 4.2 per cent. Be (23.5 atom.), enters into a very complicated form over the entire beta region. There is a possible compound, Cu2Be, at about 6.5 per cent. Be (32.3 atom.). The pure gamma range extends from 11.2 to 12.2 per cent. Be. (46.5 to 49 atom.), after which the liquidus rises rapidly to 30 per cent. Be. (75 atom.). The delta solution extends from 25 per cent. to an unknown percentage of beryllium. There is a eutectoid point at 575" C., extending from 1.5 to 11.2 per cent. Be., the maximum time interval of which occurs at 6 per cent. Be. Below this line the beta solution is described as breaking up into alpha and gamma. Microscopically, the eutectiferous alloy thus formed closely resembles pearlite, and requires a high magnification for its resolution.

BERYLLIUM is one of the most interesting of the minor metals and distinctly a modern development, for until the last two decades it had practically no commercial importance whatever. Then it was discovered that when small quantities of it were alloyed with copper, a copper alloy of unusual and valuable qualities resulted. This is by far its major use-in the manufacture of strong, heat-treated copper-base alloys in which the beryllium content varies from about 0.3 to 2.5 per cent. Its second most important use, though much smaller, is in the form of oxide or other nonmetallic products in the fluorescent lamp, X-ray, cathode ray, and television industries. Certain beryllium salts have the quality, in common with several other materials, of transforming short-wave radiation and cathode rays to visible radiation. Such materials are commonly known as phosphors, and the beryllium salts are the most important phosphors now in use. The third largest use for beryllium is for ceramics, including refractories. Beryllium is also used in small quantities in the form of the metal itself.

BERYLLIUM was discovered in 1798 by Vauquelin and the metal was first produced by Wohler in 1828 about a year later than his production of metallic aluminum. Beryllium remained dormant until about 1920 when the production of the metal by the electrolysis of a molten bath was carried out by Stock in Germany, closely followed by Dickinson in the United States and by Vivian in England. This may not have been the first time the electrolytic method was thus used but was the beginning of present-day methods. I believe the first commercial attempts in this country started with the Kemet Laboratories about 1924. Siemens & Halske in Germany were working on the same problem at about the same time. The work of the Kemet Laboratories was transferred to the Beryllium Company of America and later to the Beryllium Development Corporation. In 1926 1 made a considerable study of the beryllium¬copper alloys, using beryllium purchased from the Beryllium Company of America, and read a paper on this subject at the February, 1927, meeting of the A.I.M.E. However, I failed at that time to discover the properties of precipitation hardening which such alloys have in a very marked degree. After this publication the work on beryllium-copper alloys rested awhile. One cause for this was the difficulty of securing a supply of beryllium-at least at what might be considered a reasonable price. In 1926 the price was $200 per lb., a figure which held about the same both in this country and in Germany until the beginning of 1932, when it was offered here at $50 per lb. if taken in the form of a copper alloy which carried about 121/2 per cent beryllium. Somewhat later the 121/2 per cent alloy dropped to $25 per lb. of beryllium contained, which is the present price. Promise is made that with a greater consumption, production on a larger scale warrants a reduction in price to $10 per pound or less.
