In 1981, a gas outburst accident occurred in the Yubari Shintanko coal mine, the only expectant mine in Japan, it caused 93 deaths. As a result, Yubari Shintanko closed in 1982. This major disaster was a turning point for sustainability of Yubari City, the largest coalfield in Japan. Finally, Yubari City was bankrupted in 2007. This paper aims to explore how miner’s children experienced this disaster and felt about region, family, and themselves, and to explain the relation between region declining and children’s lives. The data of this paper are the archived 600 essays, written by the junior high school students at the time of the disaster. There are three findings. First, the children who lost their father were the most shocked. They faced profound sadness. But they expressed that they had decided to overcome their sadness with surviving family. Second, the children who didn’t lose their father were also influenced. They were anxious about the future of Yubari, their family, and themselves. Furthermore, they decided to strive for their future. Third, they understood the disaster as a turning point of Yubari declining and looked ahead their future outside of Yubari. In conclusion, this disaster created their hopelessness to Yubari region and, as a result, promoted the decline of the city through their migration to other city. Furthermore, it is important to clarify that Yubari City has to continue the struggle to the regeneration.

"Abstract - The mainland Aysén region of Chilean Patagonia (44°15' - 47°30'S) is a representative segment of the South American active continental margin, distinct with respect to northern and central Chile. Mineralization consists mainly of polymetallic deposits, with important Zn-Pb mines and more recently discovered Au-Ag deposits, unlike the central Andes, which are dominated by Cu mineralization. On a regional scale, rocks may be grouped in four main map units: 1) the Paleozoic metamorphic basement; 2) upper Jurassic-Cretaceous calc-alkaline volcanic and marine sedimentary rocks; 3) the Patagonian batholith, and 4) upper Cretaceous to Miocene basalts and marine and continental sedimentary rocks. The upper Jurassic-Cretaceous rocks and the Patagonian batholith formed in a volcanic arc and back-arc setting superimposed on the Paleozoic metamorphic basement.Based on geographic location and geologic and tectonic setting, ore deposits in this region are assigned to three groups, from south to north: El Faldeo, Fachinal, and El Toqui. The El Faldeo group (south of 47°05'S) includes upper Jurassic Zn-Pb skarn and associated polymetallic massive sulfide vein deposits locally overprinted by Au-rich epithermal mineralization, hosted by volcanic and sedimentary rocks and/or by rocks of the metamorphic basement. The Fachinal group (46°05' - 47°05'S) consists of volcanic-hosted lower Cretaceous Au-Ag epithermal deposits, except for the Mina Silva and Manto Rosillo deposits, which are metamorphic basement-hosted Zn-Pb skarns. The El Toqui group (44°30' - 46°05'S) comprises lower Cretaceous Au-rich Zn-Pb skarns and associated polymetallic veins, as well as Au-Ag-rich epithermal deposits, hosted by volcanic, intrusive, and marine sedimentary rocks. Galena lead isotopic signatures for each deposit group indicate a decreasingly radiogenic trend from south to north, suggesting different lead sources or differences among underlying crust. Three metallogenic provinces and two metallogenic epochs are proposed for the Aysén region: the El Faldeo metallogenic province of Late Jurassic age; and the Fachinal and El Toqui provinces of Early Cretaceous age. Résumé - La partie continentale de la région d’Aysen (Patagonie chilienne, 44°15' - 47°30'S), est unsegment représentatif de la marge continentale active d’Amérique du sud, différent des segments du nordet du centre du Chili. "Abstract - The Domeyko Cordillera, the westernmost uplifted crustal block of the composite High Andes of northern Chile (20°S to 28°S) hosts a narrow N-S trending belt of Late Eocene-Oligocene giant porphyry copper deposits, which include Collahuasi, Chuquicamata, El Abra, La Escondida, and El Salvador. These deposits are spatially and genetically associated with the closing igneous activity along this range, prior to a 30 km eastward jump of the magmatic front in response to tectonic plate interaction. The porphyry copper deposits are also spatially associated with a major intraarc strike-slip shear system, the Domeyko Fault System. Although the tectonic uplift of the 3000 m to 5000 m high range has generally been assumed to be mostly Miocene in age, field relationships suggest that the Domeyko Fault System and tectonic uplift were active as early as the Eocene, coinciding with porphyry copper emplacement between 41 Ma and 30 Ma. Apatite fission track (FT) thermochronology provides both age data and a time-temperature history for rocks since they cooled below a temperature of ca. 125°C (equivalent to a depth of 4 km to 5 km under normal geothermal gradients) on their way to the surface during exhumation, or after a heating event. Apatite FT data from the Paleozoic crystalline basement of the Domeyko Cordillera indicate that at least 4 km to 5 km of rocks were eroded during exhumation of this tectonic block between ca. 50 Ma to 30 Ma (Middle Eocene to Early Oligocene), a time that immediately precedes and overlaps with the emplacement of giant porphyry copper deposits. The FT data constrain the age and duration of a period of crustal thickening and extensive erosion known as the Incaic compression, an event recognized in the Andes of Chile and Peru. Assuming that cooling was due to denudation alone, modelling of the FT data allow estimation of denudation rates between 200 and 100 m/My during this period. In contrast, exposures of pre-porphyry Paleocene intrusives on the western edge of the Domeyko Cordillera reveal apatite FT ages that are concordant with biotite 40Ar-39Ar dates, indicating shallow emplacement, fast cooling and negligible exhumation. The apatite FT ages of the Chuquicamata and El Abra porphyry copper deposits are only marginally younger than their 40Ar-39Ar dates, implying fast cooling/exhumation of shallow mineralizing systems (ca. 2 km to 3 km). Their FT time-temperature history is compatible with extremely low rates of exhumation (ca. 50 m/My) since about 30 Ma (Early Oligocene). This limited extent of erosion, due to exceptional aridity, has greatly contributed to the preservation of rich supergene enriched blankets above some of the porphyry copper deposits.A model is proposed, which is consistent with field relationships, geochemical, and geochronological data. High relative velocities and intermediate-angle oblique convergence between the Nazca and South American plates in the Eocene-Early Oligocene led to intra-arc transpression partitioned into reverse faults of opposing vergence and a right-lateral shear system (the Domeyko Shear System) localized along the magmatic front. Crustal shortening and thickening led to uplift within the Domeyko Fault System and to erosion of at least 4 km to 5 km. Crustal thickening deepened the zone of magma generation, and magmas accumulated in the lower crust, allowing small volumes to rise rapidly to shallow levels along transtensional domains of the regional shear system. A similar model of crustal thickening and shortening before and during porphyry copper emplacement in zones of transtension may also apply to the Miocene-Pliocene giant porphyry copper province of central Chile."

"Abstract - The Las Cañas stratabound Pb-Zn deposit, in northern Chile, is hosted by the Lower Cretaceous back-arc marine carbonate and subordinate andesitic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks of the Chañarcillo Group, one hundred meters above a thick pile of magmatic arc-related basaltic to andesitic lavas of the Bandurrias Formation. The deposit is not obviously related to local intrusive rocks, which include an Upper Cretaceous granodiorite batholith and dacite dikes emplaced along normal faults. Stratabound Pb-Zn-Ba mineralization is constrained within several porous stratigraphic units, including a 50 cm thick lapilli-tuff and less well mineralized algal-laminated limestone. Veins that locally carry some Pb-Zn occur along normal faults that displace the stratabound orebodies, and this study shows that they represent a different type of mineralization.Fluid inclusion microthermometric data for ore-stage quartz and barite indicate saline fluids (6 to 30 wt% NaCleq) and a formation temperature in the range of 80°C to 160°C for the stratabound mineralization. Two types of fluid inclusions occur in the veins. The type I vein fluid inclusions indicate less saline (average 7 wt% NaCleq) and slightly higher temperature fluids, in the range of 110°C to 220°C. The type II vein fluid inclusions indicate highly saline fluids (25 to 40 wt% NaCleq) which might be related to minor copper mineralization.206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb ratios for galenas from the stratabound mineralization, with mean values of 18.42, 15.59, and 38.25, respectively, fall within the range of stratabound polymetallic deposits of northern and central Chile, and indicate a Lower Cretaceous magmatic rock source. Galenas from veins have slightly more radiogenic 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb ratios, with mean values of 18.47, 15.61, and 38.34, suggesting two distinct episodes of mineralization.?34S values for galena and barite range from negative values (-31.2‰ to -12.5‰ and -7.7‰ to +12‰, respectively) in the mineralized tuff to higher values in the algal-laminated limestone (-2.5‰ to +1.2‰ and +13.2‰ to +17.4‰, respectively), close to Lower Cretaceous marine sulfate values for barite, and homogeneous values for the galena from veins (-12.0‰ ±1‰). Changing redox conditions can partly account for ?34S variations in the tuff. Sulfur sources include magmatic rock sulfur (-1.5‰ to +9.7‰) as well as sedimentary sulfides and marine sulfate."

Chuquicamata has added a new facility to their operations located in northern Chile. The plant demonstrates many unusual features including: underground collection of leachate, high copper tenors, extensive use of plastics and special corrosion resistant alloys.

This paper analyses the scope and instruments employed by the Basel Convention for regulating the transboundary movement of hazardous wastes, the present and projected hazardous waste regulations of Chile, reviews the Chilean import/export trade of wastes of the period 1985-1995, and discusses, the influence that the Basel Convention has had on mining trade, its perceived benefits and costs, and possible effects on Chile's trade of the application of the Convention's Decision III/l. There is no quantitative estimation as to the effect of the Convention on the general volume of imported or exported materials destined for recovery, recycling, reclamation, or reuse. All recycling imports, with the possible exception of residues of petroleum oil, which occurred during the decade 1985-1995, can be classified tentatively as non hazardous. The entry into force of the Convention has had several effects on Chile's trade. It has brought home the need to have a comprehensive hazardous waste legislation, it has been a base for applying import restrictions, which in all likelihood, would .have otherwise not been applied, The benefits and costs of this import restriction, as well as those of the multilateral export ban are analyzed.

The Chilean part of the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego, situated south of latitude 62o S, is within that country?s Región de Magallanes y Antártica, and separated from the remainder of Chile by the Magellan Strait. In recent geological history several phases of Quaternary age glaciers originating in the Andean and Dawinian Cordilleras eroded assumed primary gold deposits and entrained their related alluvial deposits. Piedmont glaciation extended to the east and south over m0st of the land and beyond the present-day coastline into extensive areas exposed during the resulting lowered relative sea level. During interglacials particulate gold incorporated unevenly in the widespread drift, till and moraines was fluvially released and concentrated into streams and flood gravels. Coastal erosion enriched various beaches with gold. From 1868 onwards Tierra del Fuego hosted a major gold rush whereby early, labour intensive, beach mining eventually developed into inland dredging. But continued mining activity was interrupted and then terminated by several external factors. Most miners, always seeking ?greener pastures?, joined the rush to the new discoveries in the Klondike (1896) and Nome, Alaska (1899). In 1904 the international boundary, established in 1881, became the subject of a major dispute not settled until 1984, The Panama canal?s opening in 1914 turned Tierra del Fuego, previously on the Pacific-Atlantic shipping route, into a remote backwater. World War II brought opposing foreign naval forces to the actual islands where most gold had been taken from the beaches. It also crippled the dredging industry which lost its coal supply and never recovered. Nevertheless, some small scale mining continues to this day.

Aspects such as rock mass damage occurrence as a function of blast vibration frequency content has been studied, as well as the development of blasting methodologies for guaranteeing the full 100% extraction of all infrastructure blasts, including the all-important drawbell volumes. The development of such infrastructure volumes in one single event using electronic detonators and the associated achievement of ambitious productivity goals, are described as a critical part of the successful construction of one of the most ambitious UG projects currently present on the world.

Chile is responsible for 30% of the global copper production; the world ́s largest. However, significant challenges are faced in this industry; declining grades (1.13% in 2002 to 0.61% in 2015), high cost of energy, scarcity of water, and environmental concerns. Mining trends suggest the future of the industry will be focused in the underground space, specifically due to the depletion of economically viable surface mineral deposits. For example, the largest block cave mineat Codelco ́s Chuquicamata mine is expected to reduce energy costs by 50% and dust emissions by 97%compared to the open cut mine. To access these underground deposits, critical infrastructure is required; horizontal tunnel developments, extraction levels, vertical raises, and ore passes with the on-time delivery of the highest quality outcomes being a requisite for successful project delivery (Lift 1 of 3 at Chuquicamata Underground has over 1000drawbells).One aspect that makes this scenario even more challenging for deeper underground operations is the increased risk profile (people, equipment, and geotechnical) that forms part of the general environment. Furthermore geotechnical risks should be considered and they include rock burst and windblast. The safe interaction with this environment must be sustainable throughout the full life of the project. This paper is an outgrowth of a continuing compilation of the geology of Chilean ore deposits by Carlos Ruiz who was the author in 1965 of Geologia y Yacimientos Metaliferos de Chile which was the definitive compilation of the ore deposits of Chile. A new version was written by him in 1988, with the co-operation of Federico Peebles L, published in Geologia, Distribucion y Genesis de los Yacimientos Metaliferos Chilenos. Over the past eight years J David Lowell studied the geology of the Chilean mineral belts in connection with planning mineral exploration for copper and gold.

The modem copper industry presents an excellent opportunity for the application of clean, environmentally friendly techniques using currently available hydrometallurgical technologies. This paper briefly reviews key events in the development of modern hydrometallurgy in Chile. Discussion is given to those prominent events whose impact continues to be felt on most projects currently underway. Mention is also made of the foundations of heap leaching technologies, preceded by agglomeration and acid curing, known as the T.L. Leaching Process, the cornerstone of more recent developments. A review is also presented of the leading copper hydrometallurgy projects of the 1990s. A list of those projects, their tonnages and the estimated date of implementation is provided. The conclusion provides an overview of developments in research and the trends in the implementation of copper hydrometallurgy projects in Chile for the coming years.

THE purpose of this article is not to compare one type of grinding machinery with another and to conclude from a series of tests that one particular machine is superior to all others. Neither is the reader asked to tire himself with the details of many tests to prove the statements herein made. The Chilean mill stands today almost, in outcast from the milling world. It ranks with the applicant for a job who has been given a trial along with others and condemned because he was not able to perform the definite task assigned as well as the others, and was forever eliminated. The judges did not tarry long enough to try this aspirant in a field of a slightly different nature. Even though it has been condemned, the writer contends that the published records will indicate that the trials were never shifted into the field of greatest efficiency for the Chilean mill. Those of us who cling to this outcast as a fine grinder in our milling operations do not wish, naturally, to be condemned along with the machine, and yet we feel that we are classed as behind the times, at least in this phase of our milling judgment. Hence there is considerable personal feeling in our efforts. During the last few years there have been published several papers on the relative merits of the various grinding machines. In two of these articles a comparison was made between Chilean mills and cylindrical grinders. In each case the Chilean mill came out second best from about all standpoints. The outstanding feature in these comparisons would seem to be the decided attempt to keep all conditions the same, so that each machine could be judged on its merit. As Mr. David Cole states, "We are inclined to regard a direct comparison of grinders arranged side by side, and making a product that affords as nearly as possible the same screen measure, as the Supreme Court in these grinding matters." The writer agrees that this is the very best method for true comparison between machines. The results in the two detailed tests should give the relative merits of the two grinders in doing the work assigned. And they probably do. The conclusion drawn in each case was adverse to the

(written discussion *).-Mr. Len-nox's paper is decidedly interesting in that he shows that a field exists for the Chilean mill, in which its efficiency compares favorably with that of more modern grinding devices. The figures he has given clearly indi-cate that a coarse feed is conducive to higher efficiency than the fine feeds which the Chilean mill has usually been called upon to grind. The fact is also apparently indicated that operating the Chilean mill in closed circuit with a mechanical classifier results in still higher efficiency, and that in such cases the percentage of returns should be kept below 100 per cent. to obtain best results. APPROXIMATELY 26 percent of the total ore production to date from the largest single deposit of copper-bearing material in the world was mined during the war years, 1942 to 1945, at Chile Exporation Company's great open-pit mine at Chuquicamata, Chile. About 18 percent of the total waste removed during the life of the mine was handled in the same period. The total of ore and waste represents approximately 24 percent of the total material that has been excavated from the pit. On March 18, 1964, the 52,000 dwt ore carrier M/S Houn Maru called at the port of Coquimbo, Chile, on its maiden voyage to take iron ore to Japan. This marked the first time a vessel of this size ever arrived at Coquimbo, and the event promises to drastically accelerate henceforth iron ore exports from Coquimbo province. This was made possible by the use of a versatile shiploading system recently installed by Cia. Minera Santa Fe. Coquimbo has no mechanized loading facilities other than six conventional 5-ton cargo cranes. Limited space on shore further complicates the stocking problems. To make the best of what is available, a meticulously organized semi-hand-loading system has been developed through the years.

The economic viability of base metal and gold production projects at Chillagoe, North Queensland has been elusive or difficult to achieve. Because of isolation and low grades metallurgical efficiency has always been essential. This paper, concentrates on the Chillagoe Railway and Mines Company's operations from 1898 to 1914 and Elders Resources Limited's current developmental operations at Red Dome. The technological methods of concentrating, smelting and refining the copper, silver, lead and zinc by the Chillagoe Company will be outlined as well as their understanding of the geological aspects of the ore bodies and the stock market speculation. The Chillagoe Company failed in its economic management but developed the region. Elders Resources have successfully redeveloped the region including fostering the tourist potential of the area through their expert financial, engineering and metallurgical strategies within the external economic parameters of the Pacific Region.

The Chimney Hollow Reservoir Project (CHRP) is located southwest of Loveland, Colorado. CHRP is a component of the Windy Gap Firming Project, operated by the Municipal Subdistrict of the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District. The inlet/outlet tunnel (IOT) for CHRP contains a reinforced concrete lined alve Chamber with PC membrane waterproong that was ecavated via seuential ecavation method to a diameter of feet. The IOT was ecavated using both drill and blast and road header with ground support consisting of steel sets, rock bolts, wire mesh and shotcrete. The IOT will withstand 300 feet of water head and rock ll surcharge load from the dam embankment constructed over the tunnel.

The Manus Spreading Ridge is located within the EEZ of Papua New Guinea and lies in the Manus Basin ENE of the PNG Island and N of the Island New Britain. The divergent backarc spreading system is caused by the subduction of the Solomon plate in the South under the Bismarck plate in the North along the lineament of the New Britain trench. The rate of divergence is relatively high compared to other back arc spreading systems and amounts up to 12 cm/year [3]. Since submarine volcanism and associated hydrothermal circulation as important parts of the oceanic heat transfer system are also dependent on the rate of spreading, hydrothermal fluid venting and respective deposition of polymetallic sulfides can be expected there. In late 1985 first indications for hydrothermal activity were observed on a swell within the central rift valley of the Manus Spreading Centre during a photographic survey of the seafloor by an expedition of the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics with the American RV Moana Wave [1]. Detailed geological investigations including successful sampling were first carried out in June 1990 within the scope of the OLGA II research project (conducted by Prof. Tufar, Marburg) using the German RV Sonne equipped with a deep-sea television sledge and Tvcontrolled grab systems. Simultaneously a research cruise with the Russian RV Akademic Mstivlav Keldysh took place using the manned submersible Mir; the findings of the OLGA II cruise were immediately used for planning and organization of the Mir dives [3]. The massive sulphide samples which we used for our geochemical and mineralogical studies originate from the hydrothermal fields 1 and 2 and are from grab stations of the OLGA II expedition [4].
