Problems associated with distillation and other classical methods for analyzing operationally defined cyanide (CATC, WAD, Total and Free Cyanide) will be discussed. These methods often achieve incomplete, species dependent cyanide recoveries and suffer from serious interferences. Depending on the relative concentrations of interferents and other matrix constituents, underestimation (ultimately Type II errors probability of not detecting a constituent when it is actually present) or overestimation (ultimately Type I errors -probability of deciding a constituent is present when it is actually absent) of the cyanide levels present in a ,given sample may occur, causing in the first case false security and in the second case, excessive cyanide treatment costs. Mahy, if not all, enumerated problems can be solved by using novel flow injection (FI) gas-diffusion amperometric methods. A modification of the recently approved FI ligand exchange (FIILE) method for determination of available cyanide (USEPA Method OIA-'l677) that obviates sulfide interference will be discussed. Eight laboratory round-robin data obtained for the FI UV -digestion (FIIUV) method that determines total cyanide (Proposed Method OIA-1678) will also be presented. In addition, some methods for cyanide speciation will be presented. Finally, research needed for developing reliable methods for determination of operationally defined cyanide in solid samples will be summarized.

The Bureau of the Mint of the United States Treasury maintains 13 ofEces for the purchase of gold-bullion, and this paper describes an investigation to establish the reasonable differences in the assay-results at the various institutions which may be commercially allowable in the settlements between them. Beginning with the comparative assay of proof-gold at the Philadelphia mint and the Utrecht mint, which shows 0.00002 as the closest agreement now possible, nine tables of comparative results, taken from the regular work of the service, are given..These tables begin with very fine gold, produced in an electrolytic refinery, showing close agreement in the assay-results, and follow through decreasing gold fineness and increasing amounts and complexity of base metals to very impure and complex bars produced at cyanide-mills, some of which give widely-varying results. Next is given a series of results on samples, prepared and sent out to various laboratories in the service, to test the influence of different metals and various combinations upon the agreement of the assay-results ; 11 samples were sent out and each one was assayed from 44 to 71 times, making a total of 623 assays. To these ire added 107 assays of identical samples of coin-gold. This paper outlines the results of a relationship developed during the design and construction of the foundations for the Gallery Towers project in Melbourne. Both the builder and the piling contractor were determined to arrive at a satisfactory foundation solution to the problems encountered at the site. The scope of piling work was to provide load-bearing piles under the building columns, some of which were located within a retention system that also required a piling solution. Geological conditions were variable and challenging. The site area was small and located adjacent to the National Arts Centre in the developed Southbank area, a high density office area. This presented logistical problems in limiting construction traffic on site and also demanding minimal noise and vibration emanating from piling activities. The piling contractor, Vibro-Pile, and the builder, Walter Construction Group, faced the challenges presented with a refreshing cooperative attitude that was beneficial to both companies. Commercial issues rising from design and construction problems were first put apart in order to allow the respective technical department of each company to work with minimum constraints to achieve the most cost effective solution. In the process usual adversarial attitudes resulting in loss of time and money was avoided. A number of issues were addressed successfully at minimum cost and time during this contract. Despite the difficulties encountered, the job was completed on time and with negligible claims for extras, resulting in the development of a strong mutual respect between both companies.

Detailed pit and outcrop mapping of sedimentary rocks and their alteration is providing insights into fluvial processes that operated during deposition of the world-class Yandi channel iron deposit. Five prominent rock units are traceable along the strike of the Yandi deposit and permit correlation of open pits and mesas. These units are the Eastern Clay Horizon (ECH), granule-pebble conglomerate (GPC), Main Ore Zone (MOZ), Basal Denatured Zone (BDZ), and Basal Conglomerate (BCONG). The upper part of the deposit is characterised by a transition from spheroidal grains with well-defined rims and nuclei to larger, subangular grains with poorly developed rims. The distribution of rock types and sedimentary features such as lateral accretion surfaces, channel scours and fills, graded bedding, cross-bedding, reworked horizons, and slumped strata are common at Yandi and indicate deposition in a fluvial system. Bedding is well preserved despite modification of original grain shapes and textures and introduction of secondary silica and alumina in the upper part of the deposit. The high lithic and clay content of the GPC and ECH possibly reflect changes in source area or a hiatus in deposition of the Marillana Pisolite. The MOZ and the BDZ may be the same depositional unit with the latter recording alteration by groundwater and destruction of primary textures and other sedimentary features. The BCONG is a channel lag deposit reworked during deposition of the MOZ. This interpretation is supported by the dominance of basement-derived lithic clasts, the presence of BCONG clasts, the variable thickness of the unit along strike and the presence of BCONG clasts in the BDZ.

A study of the hydrometallurgy and electrowinning of cobalt from various domestic ores has been in progress at the Boulder City, Nevada, Experiment Station since February 1940. Previous reports covering certain phases of this investigation have been published. This report covers the research and pilot-plant work on the production of cobalt metal from cobalt-copper ores from the initial experimental work on crude ore through continuous operation. The ore types were from the Blackbird District, Lemhi County, Idaho. The initial tests were made with concentrated ore which was received by air mail and these experiments were expanded both in size and scope. After the laboratory was continued, improved, and extended tests were reported. Sufficiently advanced, a continuously operated plant producing 250 pounds of electrolytic cobalt per day was operated from June 15 through July 15, 1944.

This report describes in detail the work done on the development of the Time Domain Reflectometry Microcomputer (TDRM). Modifications to the FMC-Model 302A Cable Fault Locator is described in Appendix D. The TDRM unit uses an 8080 microcomputer to accurately locate major faults in low capacitance cables to within ± 1 foot when properly calibrated. Major faults in high capacitance cables are usually located within ± 5 feet. The upper limits of fault detection are <1 kilohm shunt fault and >7 ohm series fault. In practice fault detection limits are reduced to <300 ohms shunt fault and >30 ohms series fault because of discontinuities caused by cable repair.

This report summarizes the work performed under USBM contract J0100018. The purpose of this work was to document the currently available noise control techniques that can be incorporated into new coal preparation plants during the design stage. This was accomplished by reviewing the related experience of the contractor and subcontractor (Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc.), conducting an extensive literature search, visiting operating coal preparation plants, and contacting various equipment manufacturers. The treatments addressed include equipment substitution, changes in plant layout, and retrofit treatments for existing equipment.

INTRODUCTION The economic analysis (Chapter 3), the engineering studies (Chapter 10), the credit structure (and the consequential funding sources) - Chapter 11, and the overall feasibility structure for any venture are all directed to determining one major decision element: How much and how certain is the reward for taking these risks? Risk assessment is a surprisingly weak area of analysis and is usually addressed in a checklist fashion. It is much preferable to deal within a risk system so that the inevitable tradeoffs among risks are correctly made. DEFINITION The first step toward risk definition must be to ascertain all of the risks to which a project or a company is exposed; otherwise one will remain ignorant of the possibility of a financially crippling loss until it occurs. (Carter and Crockford, 1974). However, simply stating what "risk" is can lead to debate. For example, risk could be (adapted from Vaughan, 1982): -the chance of a loss - uncertainty of loss -possibility of loss - uncertainty -dispersion of actual from expected results - probability of an outcome different from the one expected - possibility of an occurrence of an undesirable contingency -a condition in which a possibility of a loss exists. For the minerals industry financier, the last definition is probably the most appropriate. However, from a mineral company&apos;s point of view the definition might well include the possibility of not achieving the expected financial return. RISK CLASSIFICATION Risk identification will be readily agreed as the all-important first step. There are five major "branches" of risk classification. These are: -Statistical -Modellers -Checklist -Project Financing -Insurance The Statistical set discovered probability theory and any risk discussion soon deteriorates into a mathematical jungle (Megill, 1977; Hartman, 1976; Reutlinger, 1970; and Pouliquen, 1970).Their use of terminology tells its own story: coin toss (binomial distribution), gamblers&apos; ruin, delphi (oracle) techniques, monte-carlo simulations, random walks, etcetera. These techniques inadequately represent the judgements necessary in an increasingly complicated and interrelated world. The risk Modellers have turned to the computer to handle these inter-relationships but soon find barriers because of "simultaneity". Certainly the computer has its uses to conduct various analyses (marketed as "sensitivity" analyses) but very often one finds that this involves changing one or two variables at a time, all other things being equal. This report describes the use of the sprayfan auxiliary ventilation system for methane and dust control on continuous miner sections to potential users. The sprayfan auxiliary ventilation system is a modified water spray system which directs intake air to and across the front of a continuous miner to prevent build up of methane gas and dust concentrations. This user&apos;s manual contains practical information concerning sprayfan: a. Description and capabilities b. Design c. Installation d. Operation e. Maintenance. Underground tests, independent laboratory tests, tests by MSHA, and independent installations by coal producers have confirmed the performance of the sprayfan system. There are currently 150 sprayfan systems in operation in underground coal mines.

Too often, a mine’s operations, including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, processing, etc., are considered independent steps, rather then a continuous process. In fact, these are interdependent operations with each step in the process having an impact on subsequent operations. If the effectiveness of the drilling and blasting operations can be improved, they will impact the entire mining process. Some of the resulting improvements include: level benches on grade; fragmentation and diggability with the result being reduced loading times; haul cycles improvements; and the crushing and milling operations will be more efficient and less energy consumed. Thunderbird refers to this as “Drill to Mill” information cycle or process. This paper focuses on two of the technological enhancements Thunderbird has added to its drill monitors that allow the mines to impact the “Drill to Mill” concept. These enhancements are: incorporating global positioning satellites into drill monitors; and radio off-loading of data. Thunderbird is part of the Integrated Mining Systems (IMS) alliance. IMS offers the mining industry the most comprehensive line of monitoring and navigation products available today for mobile mine equipment. In addition to Thunderbird’s drill monitors and GPS systems, the product line includes: Fleet Management Systems for trucks and loaders; dragline and shovel monitors; GPS based navigation systems for shovels, dozers and other mobile equipment; and surveying systems. IMS uses common communication systems, operating systems, and hardware components in order to provide a truly Integrated Mining System.

Este método es aplicable en aquellas vetas uniformes no falladas, que tengan desde una potencia pequeña hasta aquella que sea posible apuntalar, así como en aquellas que requieran sostenimiento del techo en la veta mima o donde se realizen Shrinkages. El proceso del método se basa en la preparación de los tajeos, luego en la explotación(perforación y disparos), enmaderado, relleno del tajeo, recuperación de madera, las variantes en la preparación del tajeo y la recuperación del mineral. La única desventaja que ofrece este método es su peligrosidad, dado que si se aplica en zonas inadecuadas o sin la supervisión que garantice el cumplimiento de las normas preventivas, es preferible el uso de los "Square Sets". Sin embargo, la aplicación del método resulta mucho más productiva en rendimiento teórico puesto que alcanza de 7 a 10 toneladas por tarea de 8 horas y responde satisfactoriamente siempre y cuando las condiciones de las vetas lo permita.

THIS REVIEW contains abstracts of the technical literature and patents dealing with the history, development, and commercial application of the Bergius and related processes for the hydrogenation, under greater than atmospheric pressures, of liquid and solid carbonaceous materials such as coal, lignite, their distillation and extraction products, pitches and tars, and petroleum and its distillation residues. An attempt has been made to include abstracts of all the published information on this process and of as much of the captured foreign documents and reports compiled therefrom as could consistently be reviewed during the time allotted for the work. Contact with the current literature and patents and review of the foreign documents will be continued and the information will appear in Synthetic Liquid Fuels Abstracts, which is being issued bimonthly as a Bureau of Mines publication. The material in this review is divided in two sections-literature (part I) and patents (part II)-and each of these is arranged alphabetically by author or patentee with further chronological arrangement under each author or group of authors. Secondary authors and patentees as well as assignees are cross-indexed to the main entry. In serial articles or reports the complete series appears in the alphabetical arrangement according to the author of the first member of the series. Succeeding members as well as secondary authors are entered as cross references; Titles of the journals are used as the authors in anonymous references. By following such a procedure, an author index is not required. However, a detailed subject index and a numerical patent list by countries are given as part III.

T HE 121st meeting of the Institute held in New York City, February 16 to 19, 1920, was a great success despite vicissitudes of weather of unusual severity. On account of tremendous snowstorms, only two members of the Canadian contingent arrived, and several of our members from the west arrived thirty hours late. Two weeks prior to the meeting, the heaviest snowstorm in 34 years wrecked the surface transportation in New York; and it was only by special dispensation that arrangements were effected, with the New York Street Cleaning Department to clear away 39th street in front of this building so that vehicles could reach the curb. The total registration of members and guests was 1138.

Throughout the 1980&apos;s the tem Mine-Wide Monitoring System has had various meanings for manufacturers of these systems and underground mine operators alike. System suppliers had visions of grandeur in the early 80&apos;s as they envisioned each mine, that has more than a single section, installing a computer based monitoring system to provide surveillance, control and documentation of the entire mining operation, including everything from a single heat detector to the weekly payroll. In a few cases this may have become reality but the truth is these systems have quietly become a steady but unspectacular workbase for the modern mining industry of the 1990&apos;s. As it exists today the total market for underground monitoring systems may not exceed $10 million annually. Suppliers have lowered their expectations of the dollar value of this particular market. Some were entering a new market because of experience with computer based data acquisition systems. Others had been active in the mining industry for years with more traditional equipment (communication systems, methane monitors, safety equipment, etc.) and decided to become involved with Mine-Wide Monitoring Systems.

The distinction between real estate ownership and that of interests in the property is fundamental to the appraisal of mineral properties. This distinction affects the nature and understanding of security of tenure and, consequently, the perception of what constitutes fair value. Legal matters are a particular concern because of their influence on security of tenure, ownership definition and use restrictions. The dynamics of the market and the complex interrelationships between the factors of production define value at a specific point in time for the bundle of rights, interests and assets that constitute a mineral property. Because each mineral property is unique, physically immobile and of a wasting nature, its usefulness to its owner and society must be optimized. The US Appraisal Institute (2001) classified the forces that affect land use as the cultural, political and economic attitudes of society. These forces culminate in laws that often dictate the purposes for doing appraisals. Once the legal definition of the asset is understood, valuers can decide on the valuation process that will support the final valuation approach.

The Bureau of Mines devised a test nipple for the field study of corrosion in the condensate-return lines of Federal heating plants. Corrosion surveys, made with this device, showed that the deterioration of the piping was caused principally by carbonic acid in the steam condensate. Corrosion problems were brought under control when the carbonic acid concentration in the condensate was decreased. In many instances, this was effected by decreasing the total carbon dioxide content of the feedwater; in others, the condensate acidity was neutralized with volatile, alkaline chemicals. Filming treatment with octadecylamine, reported successful in controlling return-line corrosion in industry, was much less effective in Federal area-heating plants. Laboratory study by the Bureau disclosed that octadecylamine is unstable in heating systems. Analytical methods were developed for this chemical and its degradation products in heating-plant condensate. Field surveys, in using these methods, confirmed the instability of the filming material. Laboratory tests showed that the degradation products are not useful film formers. Since filming treatment has little effect on condensate corrosivity, the piping was corroded where it was not coated by the treatment chemical.

More than a few discussions are taking place these days among management economists seeking a way out of the dilemma of lower productivity vs. higher labor costs. Most suggestions would be illegal under present antitrust laws. Otherwise interindustry cooperation could be used to divide up some of management&apos;s tasks. Or price structures might be tuned to the special machinery and skills of some plants. Both remedies would be under attack almost immediately. There is one other remedy that is getting lots of attention: some form of compromise between management and labor to phase out no longer needed work practices that unions insist shall be retained. Railroads are the national industry suffering the most from this disease, still known as "featherbedding," an epithet coined by the railroaders themselves.
