This paper comprises a general outline of all of the developments, including the history, geology, mining, milling, power and transportation installations, at the gold mining operation of La Luz Mines Limited and the copper mining operation of its wholly-owned subsidiary, Rosita Mines Limited, both located in north-central Nicaragua. The low-grade, gold-bearing ore-bodies of La Luz Mines, contained in highly fractured and folded Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, were from 1909 to 1928, mined and treated by primitive methods by the La Luz and Los Angeles Mining Company. The abandoned property was acquired by La Luz Mines Limited in 1936, and was equipped with modern machinery and put into production in 1939. Between 1939 and 1948, the daily rate of production was in-creased from 300 tons per day to 2,-000 ton per day. The ore reserves available for open-pit mining were depleted in 1954. Since then, the entire production has come from under-ground operations.

Gold mineralisation at Porgera is inferred to have been derived from a deep differentiated magmatic source which is capped by a series of (now tilted) inward dipping sills and stocks, which comprise the Porgera Intrusive Complex. An arc normal transfer structure provides a conduit, at tile intersection with an arc parallel structure, into which basic magma derived from tile deep melting of mantle material has been emplaced. Two phases of mineralisation display an association with late stage feldspar porphyry intrusives. Stage I carbonate-base metal-style gold mineralisation occurs as early quartz-sericite, then massive sulphide and late zoned Mn-Fe-Mg-Ca carbonate vein/breccias. Magmatic fluids derived from the deep magma source, are interpreted to have migrated along me margin of a feeder stock to the sills, and south to Waruwari. Stage II epithermal Au-Ag quartz-style gold mineralisation occurs as early fluidised breccias and carbonate veining, followed by zoned quartz-roscoelite-carbonate-gold vein/breccias, and late carbonate and/or sulphate open space infill. Magmatic fluids are interpreted to have utilised the same plumbing system as the late stage feldspar porphyry intrusive, and then migrated into the Roamane Fault which was dilated by; dextral rotation on elements of the transfer structure, normal faulting, and refraction around the competent footwall hornblende diorite. Bonanza gold is localised in a jog in the Roamane Fault, hangingwall splits and at intersections with cross structures. Bulk low grade Stage I gold has been deposited by the mixing of magmatic fluids with cool gas condensate waters, whereas high grade Stage II gold mineralisation resulted from the rapid quenching of mineralised magmatic fluids by oxygenated groundwaters.

A 6200 m² cement deep soil mixed (CDSM) wall was constructed for an addition to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts. The addition was located along the east side of the existing museum within an existing courtyard and in the area of a recently demolished structure. The basement for the new addition extended up to 9.1 m below the floor slabs of the adjacent buildings. The adjacent buildings are supported on a variety of foundations including; shallow spread footings on alluvial sand deposits, low capacity piles bearing in the alluvial sands and Boston blue clay, and caissons bearing on the alluvial sands and clay. Groundwater was less than one meter below the top of the CDSM wall. The new addition was founded on shallow foundations in the desiccated crust of the Boston Blue Clay. The CDSM wall was selected as the most economical means to control deep seated ground movements, limit movements of adjacent structures, and inhibit groundwater flow into the excavation. Braces and a continuous wale were used to support the CDSM wall where it was located adjacent to structures. Tiebacks were used where there were no structures. Other geotechnical construction at the site included: ? Jet grouting (JG) to improve the ground and provide an impervious subgrade layer at the west end of the addition, ? Concrete pier underpinning was used to support an existing structure on the west end of the site, and ? A secant pile wall using alternating drilled shafts and jet grout columns was used for earth support and a barrier to groundwater flow to allow for the installation of a storage tank at the south end of the site. Inclinometers, total station surveying, vibrating wire strain gauges on the braces and wales and load cells on the tiebacks were used to monitor performance of the excavation support system. The excavation support system performed better than required limiting lateral movements of the adjacent structures to less than 13 mm and vertical settlement to less than 8 mm. No settlements or movement were detected during the construction of the wall. Lateral movement of the CDSM wall was typically below 15 mm with the maximum movement occurring near subgrade.

1967 will be remembered as the year the world realized it was running out of silver. In May of this year a new era in tin the history of the white metal was begun as the power of the U.S. Treasury to regulate world .silver markets was staggered by one of the most intense speculative flurries in recent times. In the past few months the price of silver has risen from $1, 29 to over $1.80 per troy ounce and with it have spiraled the prices of a host of silver-bearing consumer items. Legislation has, been enacted to conserve our coinage and meager silver stocks and today large quantities of non-existent silver are trading hands at a fast pace on the commodity exchanges throughout the world. Now that the price of silver has been set loose, forces are in motion to dull the world's appetite for silver. At the same time there is strong incentive to provide greater quantities of silver to satisfy the world's hunger' for the metal.

THE raw material men in all industries, and copper is no exception, are accustomed to think of them- selves as the whole show, and not without justice, for if there were no copper mines the world would have no copper. Nevertheless, many different things costing money and resulting in profits must be done to their product before it is ready for the world's use. In other words, they are making the frequent mistake of Chinking in terms of partial costs. Nobody really uses electrolytic copper. Possibly that is why nobody seems willing to pay anything for it. The manufacturers, being canny, do not buy any more electrolytic than they feel that they can work up and sell profitably, although they like to make the raw material men Chink that they will take all that can be produced. This is a state of affairs that has aroused my sympathy and curiosity, and has induced me to study the financial history of the copper wire and brass industry of the country or such portion of it as publishes any records readily available to the curious minded. Beneficiation studies were conducted on a Portuguese feldspar ore, in order to obtain final products capable of being used in the ceramic industry. A simple scrubbing operation is enough to break the lumps in the feed. The ore deposit contains ca 35 x 106tonnesfrom which, by screening, three main products could be obtained. This paper focuses on the beneficiation of the 500/74 µm fraction, which constitutes about 27% of the ore, assaying 9.42% Al2O3,equivalent to approximately ca 46% feldspar, with a mean iron content of 0.29% iron oxides. Magnetic separation and froth flotation testwork was carried out, in order to decrease the iron contamination and increase the feldspar content. Magnetic separation alone decreased the iron content of the feed to values between 0.04 and 0.08% iron oxides with an average yield greater than 90%. Flotation with HF, provided a feldspar recovery of 45?46% with a concentrate assaying 17.6% Al2O3. The use of H2SO4, gave a recovery of 35?36% of feldspar concentrate, assaying 16.1% Al2O3. However, economic and environmental advantages of using sulphuric acid may compensate for the lower mass recovery. The iron content of0.12% iron oxides in these concentrates, could be reduced to 0.04?0.05%, by further magnetic separation.

The E26 Lift 1 North Project took 37 months from the approval on 1st January 2019 to the commencement of production on 1st March 2022. This was five months ahead of the feasibility plan. When compared to the previous E48 Block Cave construction 12 years prior, which was of a similar size and design with ten extraction drives, crusher and conveyors, the E26 Lift 1 North project has been delivered at 29 per cent less capital cost. Key metrics achieved by the project include 12.7 km of development, 240 km of production drilling for drawbells and undercut blasting, 107 drawbells fired ready for production as well as only three Lost Time Injuries compared to 16 during E48 construction. The Lift 1 North Project Team has established a significant point of difference with the delivery being completed by the ‘Owners Team Model’ not Lump Sum or Turn-key. E26 Lift 1 North is now supplying the Northparkes processing plant for the next eight years. This paper discusses major milestones achieved throughout the process, modifications to processes from previous block cave construction at Northparkes as well as novel approaches to work to achieve the successful delivery of the project.

In an ever increasing ?carbon? society; management and growth will be measured by one?s carbon footprint (or output). Industries, especially mining, are under an ever increasing scrutiny of carbon, water and environmental mandates. These mandates are measured by the emissions caused by the combustion of fossil fuels. The fundamental building-block for any business, strategic or management decision must be based on an understanding of one?s ?footprint?. The scrutiny is most stringent for the commodities producers, power producers & fuel suppliers in the energy market. An overview of currently acceptable standards, application of those standards and nuances experienced in collecting the data necessary to analyze and complete a company?s carbon footprint will be presented. A lack of regulation, the fear and expectation of new and ever constraining rules, regulation and a change in the federal administration is a recipe for uncertainty in the marketplace.

A critical review of the numerous test methods that have been devised for measuring the "plastic" and "swelling" properties of bituminous coking coals and the practical evaluation of the data obtained has long been needed. The author appreciates fully, first, the arduous problem of doing justice to the merits and limitations of the many original test methods and their manifold modifications and, second, the more difficult task of interpreting the test data obtained in their practical applications to the important problems involved in the coking process. It has been the constant aim of the author to point out the broader significance of the test principles employed in the different classes of test methods and the usefulness of the test data obtained in relation to the problem of coking bituminous coals, rather than to stimulate unduly a controversial criticism of the merits and limitations of any particular class of test methods or of individual test methods devised by different workers. The task has been quite difficult because of the almost total lack of accepted test standards and specifications.

New and developing communication systems en-able underground miners to, not only connect to the surface from an increased communication coverage area, but also to be discovered in the event of an emergency. Communication and tracking systems are required by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Ad-ministration (MSHA) regulations, aiming to enhance health and safety and routine production in underground operations. Modeling a mine?s potential communication coverage area will increase overall coverage and efficiency of the communication network itself. Modeling the propagation of wireless communications enables ideal broadcast locations to be found when designing a communications network. Strategic placement of broad-cast devices results in a reliable communication network that can better withstand disruption in daily operation and during a time of emergencies. Research on wireless communication in mines has been ongoing since 1922, when the U.S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments in its experimental mine in Bruceton, PA (Schiffbauer & Brune, 2006a). Ac cording to Dobroski and Stolarczyk (1982), ?as early as 1922, Bureau of Mines experiments showed that radio propagation in mines was possible but not practical.? In 2006, the underground communication technologies available to the mining industry had inherent problems that limited communication capabilities. Because harsh underground mine environments significantly reduce line of sight and propagation range and introduce power and safety concerns, the overall effectiveness of underground communication technologies were limited. The first crush pillars on the Bushveld platinum mines were introduced at Union Section in 1978. Before the introduction of crush pillars, serious problems were experienced when stoping advanced to a point 30 m to 40 m on both sides of the centre gully. At least three to four stopes were collapsing per month. The introduction of the pillars stopped the stope collapses in the mining area where they were introduced. The residual stresses of these pillars were never measured; however, the successful elimination of the ?back-break? problem suggests that the original pillars had a residual strength of at least 8 MPa. Apart from back analyses, very little work has been done to determine the residual strength of crush pillars and only very recently have any measurements been made. The lack of knowledge in this field has resulted in pillars being designed based on experience. Concerns about stope collapses, similar to the Coalbrook disaster, have led to larger pillars being cut in more recent times. If such pillars were cut in brittle quartzites they would always fail violently but the ductile nature of the Merensky Reef generally allows large pillars to fail without bursting. Occasionally, however, one would burst in a working area. Increased incidence of bursting has been reported on some mines at deeper levels but most of these bursts occur in the back areas. Nevertheless, the incidence of bursting increases the risk of falls of ground in already dangerous areas, and the larger pillars decrease the extraction ratio. This paper describes the evaluation of stress measurements conducted in two boreholes over a crush pillar with dimensions 2.5 m x4.0 m, and a height of 1.2 m. Boussinesq equations for vertical and shear stress were used to analyse the original measurements and provide a stress profile across the pillar as well as the residual strength of the pillar. The results showed an unexpectedly high peak stress of 280 MPa at the centre of the pillar and a residual strength of 48 MPa. The reason for the high residual strength is suspected to be the result of the stiff environment under which the pillar failed and the small height of the siding on the up-dip edge of the pillar. More measurements should be conducted on several mines to establish a range of residual strengths for narrow crush pillars.

"Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. in Mexico, has nine mining operations, six managed by Peñoles (base metal mines) and three managed by Fresnillo plc (precious metal mines). Seven of the operations use flotation and the other two are heap leach operations, one for gold and the other one for copper.This paper gives a brief introduction of Peñoles, shows mine locations and describes the main process characteristics of each concentrator. It also presents four of the new operating practices that were implemented over the last four years to improve the economics of the mining operations. These include (1) the use of centrifugal gravity concentrators to increase the recovery of gravity recoverable gold (GRG) and silver (GRS), (2) the use of expert systems to reduce process variability while increasing grades and recoveries, (3) the application of the Six Sigma methodology to key projects to ensure success and personnel development and (4) the use of water chemistry fundamentals to identify chemistry problems and design adequate solutions for improving grades and recoveries.INTRODUCTIONPeñoles was founded in 1887. It is a mining group with integrated smelting, refining and chemicals producing operations. Peñoles is the world largest producer of refined silver and metallic bismuth, the leading Latin American producer of refined gold and lead. It is amongst the world leading producers of refined zinc and sodium sulfate.Peñoles operates and controls six underground mines in Mexico and is the largest producer of zinc and lead of the country. It also produces copper concentrates and cathodes. Through its 77.1% equity stake in Fresnillo plc (a London Stock Exchange listed company); Peñoles is also a significant producer of gold and silver. Fresnillo plc operates three precious metal mines in Mexico. While Fresnillo is the world largest primary silver mine, Ciénega and Herradura are two leading gold mines of Mexico. Figure 1 shows a map of Mexico indicating the locations of the Peñoles mines. The main process characteristics of each concentrator are listed in Table 1."

India does not possess any soluble potash reserves and depends completely on imports. In this study, an attempt has been made to recover potash (K) values from the mica sample employing thermal and mechanical routes followed by leaching. Direct leaching of mica in different lixiviants is found to be ineffective with very low K-dissolution (1–5%). Heat treatment with different fluxes, such as NaCl, NaOH, and CaCl2, is carried out and almost 85% K-values are recovered. Mechanical activation of mica and with different calcium additives is carried out to recover potash values. K is recovered in leach solution in the form of soluble salts, such as K2CO3, K2SO4, and KOH, and leach residue consists mainly of calcium-alumino-silicates. Using mechanical activation with flux, it is possible to recover >95% K-values from mica sample. Mechanical activation with calcium-based flux is found sustainable in the recovery of K-values from mica.

(communication to the Secretary*) :-Any one who has observed the increased efficiency of the Wilfley tables in a mill when fed from a reasonably good hydraulic classifier, as compared with tables fed from a spitzkasten., which is a very poor classifier, will agree to the advantage of ? better classification." It must be gratifying to Dr. Richards to know that, directly or indirectly, maim mill men are responding to his persistent advocacy of correct principles of ore dressing and are accepting the results of his investigations. As he says, these principles mean much for both the conservation of resources and the profit of operators. When Dr. Richards gives us accurate figures as to the maximum size of free mineral grains in the tailings of the Wilfley table and of the vanner, they will be of a good deal of practical value in delimiting the proper fields for the Wilfley, the vanner, and the round table. He has coined the terms ? free settling" and "hindered settling."' The series may be completed by adding "crowded settling," the main principle of action on both the vanner and the Wilfley table, which is the principle of separation in a mass of grains crowded as closely together as they can be and yet continue free to move between one another; and the occurrence of larger mineral particles in the Wilfley tailing than in that from the vanner is apparently caused by the more violent agitation, due chiefly to the purposely sudden reversal of the stroke. It seems likely that the agitation caused by the wash water dropping directly upon the concentrate on the vanner is more harmful than that due to the shake. For the very finest material that can be concentrated by usual methods, the round table is superior to the vanner because it does not, have even, the gentle agitation of the latter. The action on round tables is, not crowded settling," but "film sizing," 2 but agitation is harmful in the latter action. George Gates proved this harm 20 years ago : in slaking the first successful large-scale application of canvas tables in California gold mills he abandoned all shaking motion, although he had patented canvas tables to which such motion was applied.

The main source of Mn in raw materials for SiMn production is Mn-ore and Mn-rich slag from the high carbon FeMn production. The amount of slag per tonne of SiMn metal is mainly determined by the ore/slag ratio. Increasing share of FeMn slag at expense of Mn-ore will lead to larger slag/metal ratio in the SiMn process. High volume of slag leads to an increased consumption of energy and probably to higher losses of metal inclusions in the final slag. Excavation of a SiMn furnace has shown that only modest pre-reduction of Mn-ore with CO gas seems to be obtained. Nearly all reduction of MnO was finished at the top of the cokebed. Dissolution and reduction of quartz obviously takes place in the cokebed zone after the main reduction of manganese oxide is finished. Probably the ?pick up? of Si in the metal is quite fast and takes place as the metal trickles down through the cokebed towards the metal bath. The distribution of Si between SiMn alloys and multicomponent MnO-SiO2-CaO-Al2O3-MgO slags is mainly determined by the process temperature, the silica content of the slag and its R-ratio = (CaO+MgO)/Al2O3. As an example, the equilibrium content of Si in the alloy will increase by about 6 % if the R-ratio is reduced from 2 to 1, provided constant temperature and silica content. The effect of temperature is also considerable. The equilibrium content of silicon will increase by approximately 6 % per 50°C in the temperature range 1550°C to 1700°C. The equilibrium content of MnO in SiMn slags depends first of all on the temperature and secondly on the silica content of the slag. At 1600°C the MnO content decreases from about 9 % at silica saturation to a minimum of about 3-4% when the silica content is reduced to about 40-45%.

However, the coal industry's historical management practices must change to remain viable? The practices of the current day efficient coal mine manager are reviewed and examined using W. Edwards Deming's definition of management. The statistical tools, including Pareto Charts, Control Charts and Scatter Diagrams, which identify the problems management must approach differently to increase productivity at a coal mine, are discussed.

"In January 1983, Gibraltar Mines Ltd. started an exploratory program on Column Flotation with hopes of improving performance of the Molybdenum Cleaning circuit. The encouraging results led to a column test trial in the Bulk Copper Cleaner circuit where the test unit has per¬formed well. A program was undertaken to understand the mechanics of column operation. A year and a half later, Gibraltar is considering the replacement of existing Bulk Copper and Moly Cleaning flotation cells with a fully computer con¬trolled Column Flotation circuit.BRIEF SUMMARY OF TESTWORKInitial testwork was done with a home made 20 inch diameter x 31 foot high column, equipped with a doppler flow-meter at the tail line and automatic level conrol. This loop maintained constant level in the column by throttling the tail valve. This column was placed in a variety of locations around the Moly circuit as shown on Figure 1 a, b. Test re¬sults indicated that the column could achieve much higher grades than the conventional cells, but recovery wise, the performance was low. Spillages from overloaded pump boxes were a common frustration during this time.Column control strategy was reviewed; and, in light of information received from McGill University, changed to conform with the methods that had been employed by D. Wheeler, of the Column Co. of Canada4 and Gaspe Copper Mines3.The column was tested replacing a portion of the bank, figure lc. The results obtained were more or less equal to the circuit. However, as we had Nitrogen gas connected to the column and not the regular cells, the column was kept in service. With the use of Nitrogen in the column, the usual copper depressant, Sodium Cyanide could be replaced with Sodium Hydrosulphide, hence lower operating cost.As time went on, a 10 inch diameter column was added in series to re-treat the concentrate of the 20 inch diameter column with hopes that the copper content would decrease from 0.6% down to 0.3% in order to save on subsequent leach¬ing costs. So far, results indicate there has been some im-provement, hut we are not achieving 0.3% copper. (See figure 1d)."

Underground mining environments bring occupational health and safety issues with some severe dangers such as mine disasters like explosions. During such events, miners might escape using main access openings, or find a safe haven like refuge alternatives (RAs) to wait and be rescued and evacuated to the surface. In this paper, RAs are explained with their early and current applications. A classification as permanent and portable is explained depending on the conditions and their abilities. This classification is followed by the utilization and survivability of RAs with the requirements and recommendations of the main mining countries. Based on the utilization and survivability constraints, basic human requirements, waiting for a rescue team, and the required physical specifications of RAs during the events are analyzed in detail for various countries with their regulations. Among these, the specification, resistance to the explosion, is discussed in particular, and the studies in the literature are examined in terms of structural deformation. The highest deformed zones, the beneficiation of reinforcing steel components such as stiffeners, and the simulation approaches are investigated through this review.

The rapid rise of industrial Los Angeles to international prominence has been accompanied by the natural corollary - a record influx of population - together with greatly increased production and fabrication of steel and nonferrous and light metals; industrial mineral processing; and high consumption of fuel oil, gasoline, and chemicals. These have resulted in the release of hundreds of tons of metallurgical and mineral dusts, fumes, and gases into the atmosphere daily. Los Angeles County, intrinsically, is no worse than other industrial centers in respect to the generation of atmospheric contamination. It is, in fact, more fortunate in that no coal is used, and it has no great primary metallurgical industries comparable to those of Chicago and Pittsburgh. Meteorologic and topographic peculiarities of the area, however, which result in poor drainage of the polluted air away from the Los Angeles Basin, serve periodically to greatly increase the intensity and frequency of industrial smog visitations. This combination of intense industrialization, population influx, climate, and topography has made mandatory control of air pollution necessary. The nonferrous pyrometallurgical industry of Los Angeles has three rather unusual characteristics that contribute to its difficulties in developing suitable fume control: It consists of a multiplicity of relatively small establishments subject to wide Variations in products and operating schedules; operations are largely of the secondary or reclaiming nature and, therefore, often work dirty scrap metals; and, unfortunately, much of the industry is concentrated, to a considerable extent, near the center of the city. A difficulty inherent in most nonferrous foundries, including the many brass-works melting alloys containing zinc, is the high volatility of zinc and the extremely small mean particle size of the resulting zinc oxide fume.
