Advanced Process Control (APC) has been one of the most beneficial tools in the past decades available to minerals processing industry. Low capital cost together with significant improvements in process optimization have made APC an attractive investment option for nearly all mineral processing units. During economic downturns, importance of process optimization becomes even more relevant as metal producers tend to target de-bottlenecking and process efficiency improvements rather than large-scale capacity upgrades. APC project clearly has a lot of potential to improve process performance but there are also some pitfalls to be identified and avoided in order to achieve a desired outcome. Above all, APC project implementation is collaboration between the system vendor and user. Targets for the optimization must be agreed together with the customer and process performance must be defined before and after the optimization project. Most importantly, performance of the process must be monitored on a continuous basis during and after the project and potentially improved further. This paper discusses Outotec’s experiences from various concentrator optimization projects. Some examples are discussed in more details; however, the main target is to present general guidelines enabling a successful APC project implementation.

In the spring of 1944 the Congress passed Public Law 290 (58 Stat. 190, 30 U. S. C. Sec. 321) "authorizing the construction and operation of demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shales, agricultural and forestry products, and other substances, in order to aid the prosecution of the war, to conserve and increase the oil resources of the Nation, and for other purposes." Section 2 reads: "In order to carry out the :purpose of this act, the Secretary of the Interior is authorized- (a) to conduct laboratory research and development work, and, with pilot plants and semi-works plants, to make careful process engineering studies, along with structural engineering studies, in order to ascertain lowest investment and operating costs necessary to determine the best demonstration plant designs and conditions of operation;

The sulphides can be arranged in a series determined by the relative amounts of ionic and covalent bonding present. This series is similar to the paragenetic series common to most sulphide ore deposits. Investigation of the surface tensions of the corresponding heavy metal iodides by the maximum bubble pressure method throws some light upon this relationship. It is shown that the surface tension of molten iodides decreases as the chemical bonding within them becomes more covalent. These results are interpreted in terms of the constitution of the melts, and are extended to cover the case of sulphides in solution in a silicate melt. It is concluded that sulphides tend to lower the surface tension of silicate melts and that this tendency becomes greater as the bonding within the dissolved sulphide groups becomes more covalent. A possible relationship between this conclusion and the origin of paragenesis in sulphide ore deposits is indicated.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the order of deposition, or paragenesis of sulphide minerals is remarkably similar in hypogene ore deposits throughout the world. This widespread similarity points towards the operation of some fundamental process which must be intimately connected with -the genesis of these ores. A correct interpretation and understanding of the causes of paragenesis in sulphide ore deposits would shed much light on the origin of these deposits.In Table 1 a simplified paragenetic series for sulphide minerals is presented. Decline shafts are an attractive option to both new and existing mining operations where there is a need to access an inclined orebody deposit via on-reef development so as to generate a return in the shortest possible time. There are many different technologies that are available to transport men, material and rock in incline shafts. This paper focuses on the applicability of two hoisting technologies for decline shafts, namely endless and direct rope systems. The pros and cons of each system are reviewed. A common concern with direct rope haulage systems is the possibility of generating slack rope during deceleration. This paper illustrates the issues involved in designing a system so as to avoid the possibility of slack rope. In conclusion, the key factors relevant to the selection of endless or direct rope haulages for a particular decline application are reviewed. We knew it was no accident that those countries abundantly supplied with mineral resources became the great manufacturing nations, and the politically and militarily strong ones; and that our own great industrial cities sprang up where coal and iron met. We all reallized, especially we of the mining profession, that the energy of fuels and the solidity of metals spelled industrial growth and in turn industrial might and that other nations came to regard mineral self-sufficiency as one of the chief goalsof economic nationalism.

Young professionals are riding the current wave of high demand for their services and relatively little competition for placements. The attraction and retention of quality incumbents has therefore become a significant strategic issue for companies in our industry. Money is important, but poorly structured career development and lack of learning opportunities can discourage the highest paid professionals from being enthusiastic and striving for excellence. This will inevitably lead to the search for a new position. Important factors at play include the young professionalÆs lack of understanding of career pathways and poor quality, or lack of, structured on-the-job training and professional development. Too often young and not so young professionals are faced with the reality that fabulous looking (and paying) jobs can be quickly reduced to the monotony of repetitive tasks in an isolating environment. While it is the responsibility of the incumbent to manage their own career and professional development, without experience, how is anyone meant to understand the importance of their roles and the options for career development? Mentoring is therefore essential to the strategic plans of every organisation and the strategic plans of every professional. Mentors will accelerate learning, guide decision making and develop both competency and confidence as they share their experience, both technical and regarding the machinations of a particular discipline, within our industry. Mentors need not be from the same organisation as the mentee and in some cases this may be a distinct advantage. This paper discusses mentoring as an opportunity for young professionals and mentors to initiate and maintain a supportive relationship, the responsibility of management to get mentoring right and the responsibility of young professionals to demand the opportunity for professional development through mentoring.

Safety conditions in industry have greatly improved over time. However, around the world, in Canada, and in each province or territory, people are still the victims of serious industrial accidents. The increasing safety of people at work then continues to be an imperative in industry today.<p> So how do we achieve a workplace where no one gets hurt? Well, in simple terms, folks need to be protected from unplanned exposures to equipment or energy sources that can do harm. If you think about it, all of our efforts in loss management and safety should then be directed toward avoiding these uncontrolled events. And it works! Our safety performance over the years has enjoyed tremendous improvement due to this support for loss management and safety. We now explore best practices toward achieving that next step in safety improvement.<p> As shown following, a large combination of loss management activities act together to support safety performance. Many of these activities are interrelated and some people have described them as the ?inputs? into an approach or program for achieving safety. Using this description, it follows that the ?outputs? of the program are some of the advertised measures of safety we see around us today, such as injury frequency rates. <p> It is asserted that a leadership focus to regularly measure safety and loss management activites (so-called ?inputs?), as a basis for taking supportive actions to ensure their effectiveness, is the basis for safety results (so-called ?outputs?) that consistently achieve high standards of excellence.<p> The concept of managing input activities, as enabled by effective measurements, can significantly act to transform our focus and priorities in the workplace. Supporting input activities like strategies, plans, or procedures with our best efforts will get us to our intended goals. Tracking outputs alone will not.<p> Safety and production have traditionally been cast as competing objectives. When both objectives are mutually supported and considered, however, people will invent ways of doing work that support both safety and production, and any other business parameter. When done right, innovation through meaningful involvement of affected people in the workplace will support safety excellence in a manner that in turn improves business efficiency overall.<p> For a workplace to be safe, it then requires everyone?s help and participation to make it happen, a collaborative effort by management, leaders, and frontline folks with the power and responsibility to take appropriate action at every level in the organization. In this way, everyone becomes a leader in safety.<p> The achievement of commitment to loss management input activities by folks in the workplace is the basis for attaining safety excellence. A workplace founded on commitment supports a safety culture with a vision for safe work performance at outstanding or world-class levels of achievement.<p> One may ask if injury incidents will be eliminated with this commitment and focus on workplace safety? Well, despite our best efforts in this area, there is never a guarantee that things can?t go wrong. We are simply not perfect. There remains in our workplace complexities and unanticipated risks that can have disastrous consequences if not managed at every moment. And when it goes wrong, we need to know we?ve truly tried our best, and now we have more to learn so we can get even better. <p> That?s the challenge represented by the safety imperative, a challenge to take safety performance that next step, a fulfillment of our commitment to the moral obligation we have to each other?s safety. It?s an effort that will continually raise the bar of world-class safety performance achievement for future generations. It?s a legacy we can be proud to be part of.

The work and costs involved in controlling three large fires in abandoned mines in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania are presented in detail. The work was done under authority of Public Law 89-4. Three basic control techniques were successfully employed by the Bureau of Mines: (1) forming underground fire-containing barriers by systematically flushing incombustible material into mine voids, (2) excavating an isolation trench around the fire area, and (3) complete excavation of hot and burning material in the fire area. When methods 2 and 3 were used, the excavations were subsequently back- filled with incombustible material. Preliminary location of fire perimeters by the standard use of patterned 6- and 8-inch-diameter boreholes is discussed. Investigations into air-borne infrared scanning, shallow subsurface thermal anomalies, and the use of helium to trace the movement of mine air currents are covered. Although they are costly and time consuming, boreholes have proven to be the most efficient means to date of obtaining necessary subsurface fire data. Infrared scanning was ineffective in delineating fires under more than 30 feet of cover. Helium-tracing was shown to have a good potential for determining possible hazards to adjacent residential areas from traveling mine fire gases.

The mining industry often embraces mine closure criteria that require the reinstatement of predisturbance or even presettlement (ie historic) ecosystems. However, the extent and severity of disturbance associated with most mining activities mean that critical physical and biological characteristics are irreversibly altered. Consequently, it is rare that a reconstructed landscape can support ecosystems even close to the historic condition, and this rarity is reflected in the small number of mine leases that have been extinguished by attainment of such completion criteria. Novel ecosystems are defined as those in which some or all physical and biotic components are irreversibly different from the historic condition. Recognition of the concept of novel ecosystems allows mine closure criteria to be set according to attainable physical and biological conditions that provide safe, stable and manageable environments with acceptable ecological functions. We propose that a landscape that first maximises physical stability and economy yet will provide a range of environments for vegetation communities and fauna habitats that may be very different from those existing prior to a disturbance should be considered suitable alternatives to, eg targeting idealised historic environments. As a result, mine closure criteria should be established by detailed description of the best attainable physical conditions, with negotiated identification and testing of the most appropriate biological systems for the various parts of the reconstructed landscape. As a general practice, revegetation would use native, but not necessarily local species if the new physical environment is not conducive to the survival and growth of local species. These new ecosystems would need to be managed in perpetuity, although the intensity of management might be low if landscape design and engineering are combined with appropriate species introductions. Here, we suggest an abbreviated procedure that may be adapted in light of local conditions and circumstances for guiding decisions influencing the physical and biological properties of reconstructed landscapes that will enable novel ecosystems to meet realistic closure criteria.CITATION:Doley, D and Audet, P, 2014. Numerous researchers have addressed the complexity of the direct flotation separation of apatite from low-grade phosphate ore. The majority of these studies were limited to the micro-flotation scale. In fact, there is no warranty that a reagent scheme that showed a direct flotation of apatite at a micro-flotation scale on pure minerals would automatically replicate the same expected results on the natural ore in the mechanical flotation cell and so was the case for the phosphate ore studied. The overall trend was concentrating apatite in the non-float product. This study aspired to thoroughly assess the flotation performance of this never-exploited low-grade sedimentary phosphate using design of experiments (DOE). Unveiling new insights on such a strategy twist, various parameters and operating conditions, namely, desliming, type of collector and depressant, reagents dosages, conditioning times, flotation time, and pH, were addressed by multiple-factor screening using asymmetrical fractional factorial design followed by statistical interpretations. The collectors tested were the sodium oleate and a fatty acid mixture (FAM). The depressants tested were sodium alginate (NaAL), corn starch, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), and sodium silicate. The results of the multivariable analysis revealed that desliming, pH, collector dosage, and flotation time significantly influenced the flotation process. Desliming was beneficial for the yield, P2O5 recovery, and SiO2 removal; however, there was still a compromise between grade and recovery. A strongly alkaline pH value of 12 stood out from the whole range. P2O5, CO2, and SiO2 grades of the products and flotation recoveries were improved, except for P2O5 recovery, which was negatively affected. A collector dosage between 2000 and 3000 g/t increased the P2O5 grade and reduced CO2 grade and recovery, enhancing the apatite/carbonates separation. A flotation time of 15 min was significant for P2O5 grade and CO2 recovery, nevertheless, at the expense of yield and P2O5 recovery. The products having initial concentrates of 28.08% P2O5 with a recovery of 88.96% and 29.41% P2O5 with a recovery of 62.71% were obtained using 25 g/t of NaAL and 2000 g/t of the collector FAM and sodium oleate, respectively, at pH 12.

This report, summarizing the Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and coal products for the period July 1, 1950, to July 1, 1951, is based largely on publications issued during the year. The sixteenth in an annual series, it gives footnote references to publications giving further details of the research and technologic work described, except in a few cases where research data presented herein has not been published previously. During the year, the national fuels situation was generally one of plentiful supply.3/ Mineral-fuel resources appeared adequate for several hundred years at reasonably increasing rates of supply. Coal-production capacity was in excess of demand; petroleum supplies were adequate; and natural gas use was limited only by pipeline capacity. However, it was pointed out that a world war would drastically change this situation of relative plenty, particularly with regard to supplies of petroleum and its products. Conversion to the use of coal on a large scale would be required, and improved methods of mining and of processing and using coal in solid or fluidized form or converted to liquid fuels could materially contribute to our national safety.

A risk study was carried out at the Cerrejon coal mine in order to assess the impacts of pit slope failure in terms of safety of personnel and destruction of equipment with economic consequences. Results of the assessment enabled the definition of risk treatment requirements and the identification of key aspects to consider in a risk treatment plan. The approach included the following tasks: (1) Assessment of the total probability of failure (POF) representative of the stability conditions of typical footwall and highwall slopes. For this purpose, stability analyses were carried out to define the Design POF, which accounts for the variability of strength parameters and represents the normal conditions considered for slope design. Strength parameters for highwall slope analysis were derived from borehole data obtained with a geotechnical drilling campaign. The Total POF was estimated through the use of Source Response Diagrams (SRD) in order to incorporate other sources of uncertainty not accounted for, like changes in geometry, variability of rock conditions due to geological or operational factors, changes in groundwater conditions and occurrence of seismic events. (2) Assessment of the consequences of footwall and highwall slope failure on safety of personnel. The assessment was performed through the use of event tree analysis to establish the probability of fatality caused by slope failures, from the Total POF defined in the previous task. This analysis required the evaluation of personal exposure to slope failures. Also, the assessment included benchmarking of acceptability criteria in terms of probability of fatality and the evaluation of options of risk mitigation to comply with these criteria. (3) Assessment of the consequences of footwall and highwall slope failure in terms of economic losses associated with impact on equipment. The analysis included the evaluation of equipment exposure to slope failures, and it was performed through event tree analysis to establish the probability of an economic loss associated to total or partial lost of equipment, from the total POF value defined in the first task. The magnitude of the economic losses was estimated from the costs of damaged equipment, lost production and site restoration. Options of risk mitigation were also examined in terms of economic losses. The risk assessment process applied to the Cerrejón mine showed how the system can be applied to evaluate the consequences of failure in terms of personnel safety and economics and to identify the more adequate risk mitigation options. The system can be an extremely powerful tool in the mine design process and provides the opportunity to rationalize the geotechnical information requirements, once the risk criteria have been defined by management. The main purpose of this paper is to present the process; therefore, the emphasis has been put on the methodology followed rather than on the actual results obtained.

This paper seeks to establish an empirical relationship between the impact of mining technological innovation implementation and a company’s market value. The company’s market value is represented by its stock price. In a bid to ascertain the relationship, a stock price prediction model is sought to be established using the firm-specific factors impacted by the implementation of innovative technology. This work is performed under the watch of the prevailing macroeconomic factors. The background anchors in the understanding that the difference between the economic status of a mineral deposit and its uneconomic status lies in the level of mining technological innovation most prevalent at a given time (Hartwick, Olewiler and Preuss, 1986; Wellmer and Scholz, 2017; Wright and Czelusta, 2003). This is derived from productivity improvement, resulting in sustainable profitability due to technological innovation. Unfortunately, there is not an adequately established relationship that links this technological innovation impact to the share price performance of the mineral commodity company.

The combined production value of natural abrasives, which consist of tripoli, special silica stone, garnet, and emery, decreased in 1986. Shipments of processed tripoli increased slightly in quantity and 20% in value. Production of garnet, a common iron- aluminum-silicate mineral, decreased 12% in quantity and value. There was a 4% increase in the quantity and an 11% increase in the value of refined garnet shipped when compared with 1985 shipments, a new record high. Production of crude special silica stone decreased 7% in quantity and slightly in value, and shipments of finished special silica stone products decreased slightly in quantity and increased 229% in value. Production of emery, an impure aluminum oxide, increased 77% in quantity and increased 269% in value of product mined and shipped. [ ]

Since the Peirce-Smith converter was introduced to the non-ferrous industry in the early part of this century, there has been a paucity of research on process-engineering aspects of the reactor such as gas injection. This paper reviews studies conducted at UBC over the last decade on gas discharge dynamics, high-pressure injection, bath slopping, oxygen/bath reaction kinetics and out-of-stack heat transfer within the converter. The ultimate objectives of this work have been to extend refractory life and to increase converter productivity.

This report, sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, presents the results of an examination of the safety of the Blind Shaft Borer (BSB) shaft sinking system and an alternative modified BSB design concept in comparison to conventional shaft sinking technology. Detailed study of the two systems was also performed to identify and recommend design changes for optimum safety conditions. A comparison of the BSB systems with conventional shaft sinking was made on the basis of relative risk levels. Risk incorporates both the frequency and the potential consequence of accidents. A safety evaluation of the component operations of the two BSB systems was performed using a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methodology. The results of this analysis show generally that both BSB systems are safer than conventional shaft sinking. The potential risk of conventional shaft sinking operations could be reduced by over 30%, on the average, with the use of the original BSB system, and by an average of about 10% with the modified BSB. Design change recommendations to further improve the safety of these systems include better fire suppression systems, improved man haulage systems and more compact hydraulics. An operational safety manual was also developed for the modified BSB system.

"The NewCrest Cadia operation boasts the largest SAG mill commissioned last June 1998. A request was made to shed some more light on possible SAG mill charge behaviour. Three different software were used to simulate SAG mill charge behaviour:Mishra/Rajamanis MillSoft DEM charge motion program, Radziszewskis agglomerated DEM charge motion program and Powell/Nuricks MillTraj outer trajectories program. The contexts simulated are: 20/30 % charge volume, 65/75/85 % critical speed using the Hi-Lo lifter configuration specified for the mill as well as a Hi-Lo 60 degre lifter face configuration. Further, lifter interval was also studied to determine the effect on power draft. Power predictions are compared with those obtained during the commissioning period.INTRODUCTIONThe NewCrest Cadia operation is located outside of Orange, New South Wales, Australia. With proven reserves of 190 million tonnes at a grade of 0.75 g/t Au, the mill was designed to process 17 Mtpa (2065 tph) of ore with an 86% copper and 73% gold recovery. The grinding circuit (Fig. 1, Table I) boasts the largest SAG mill (Fig. 2) and was commissioned last June 1998."

Electrochemical processing using molten electrolytes is undergoing a considerable renaissance due to several innovative ideas being explored both in the laboratory and also at the pilot scale. Several of these new ideas are related to developments in energy generation and storage and involve solid electrolytes. Sodium has been prepared by the electrolysis of sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide with the transfer of sodium ions through a sodium beta" alumina membrane and magnesium oxide dissociated by the removal of the oxygen through a stabilized zirconiaelectrolyte incorporating a fuel cell electrode. By using halides with highly electropositive cations, such as molten calcium chloride, it has been found that the favoured cathodic reaction, when oxygen is present, is the ionization of oxygen and not the deposition of calcium. This approach has been applied to the reduction of many metal oxides including titanium, zirconium, niobium and rare earth oxides and, by using a mixture of oxides as the cathode, homogeneous alloys are produced. This concept can also be applied to deoxidation of solid and liquid metals. Refining of metals is possible using intercalation compounds and, in a completely different application, it has-been found that, by intercalating alkali metals by electrolysis of alkali halides into graphite, it is possible to produce carbon nanotubes and nanoparticles. The technological opportunities of these various concepts will be discussed.

The roasting of sulphide ores and concentrates is often the first step in the production of metals or chemicals. In many processes, the production of sulphuric acid is viewed as a by-product, whereas in some plants production is an important economic factor. Regardless of the purpose, a pyrite roasting plant consists of mainly three plant sections: roasting, gas cleaning and sulphuric acid. With the addition of air, the pyrite concentrates are transformed into solid oxides and gaseous sulphur dioxide at temperatures of 600?1000°C. After cleaning and cooling, the sulphur dioxide in the roasting gas is further processed to sulphuric acid. Two types of reactors are used depending on the application: stationary or circulating fluid bed. For over 60 years, Outotec has progressively been developing the principle of fluidized bed technology in several different reactor types for a multitude of process applications. The versatility of the fluidized bed reactor system has manifested itself in the treatment of minerals, including solid fuels, and for metallurgical processes both in the ferrous and non-ferrous fields. Process applications have included roasting, calcining, combustion and charring of coals, as well as off-gas treatment. This paper provides a summary of the pyrite roasting technology currently used along with a simple cost comparison of pyrite roasting and sulphur burning processes.

The process of pile driving disturbs the soil around the pile. The nature and magnitude of disturbance depends upon 1) the pile size, and 2) the nature of soil. Therefore, the prediction of a single pile behavior based on soil properties of undisturbed soil samples may not match its performance. Under lateral loads, the pile may loose contact with the soil near the ground surface especially in clays. The soil pile interactions are influenced the most by pile behavior in this zone. This situation further affects the tally of prediction and performance. Piles are used in groups. The zones of overlapping stress from one pile to the other both around the pile and below their tip particularly in soft soils, contribute to group effects. Empirical solutions have been developed for prediction of the pile group behavior. The group action is more involved under vibrations. Several cases of single piles and pile groups under static and dynamic loads from published records have been analysed. It has been shown that single pile test is the best source of information on the soil-pile-soil interaction effects.
