Alloys used at high temperature must resist both creep and corrosion. Design for corrosion resistance is based on the formation of a slow-growing, protective oxide scale by selective oxidation of an appropriate alloy component, usually chromium or aluminium. A successful scale will exclude other corrodents, notably carbon, which can otherwise cause extremely rapid corrosion at high temperatures. Selective oxidation of an alloy component necessarily lowers the concentration of that metal in the alloy subsurface region. Under thermal cycling conditions, mechanical damage to the scale leads to renewed oxide growth and accelerated alloy depletion. Eventually, a point is reached where diffusion of a corrodent into the alloy becomes competitive with the outward diffusion of alloy metal to repair the protective scale. Two examples of alloy failure by carbon attack are considered. In the steam cracking (pyrolysis) process, centrifugally cast tubes of heat-resisting alloy are exposed to a gas stream of hydrocarbon and steam, at a carbon activity of unity. Formation and repair of the surface chromia scale causes alloy depletion, Kirkendall void formation, and subsequent internal precipitation of chromium-rich carbides. Their formation makes chromia scale formation much more difficult, and generates internal stress. Eventually, the tubes fail by creep rupture. In other processes (e.g. steam reforming, heat treatment), synthesis gases are supersaturated with carbon at intermediate temperatures. Once the alloy's protective scale is breached, carbon attacks the depleted substrate. In the case of ferritic alloys, it forms a surface scale of Fe3C. As this scale thickens, the supersaturated carbon precipitates as graphite within its outer regions. The resulting volume expansion causes disintegration of the cementite in a process known as metal dusting. In the case of austenitic alloys, no metal carbide is formed. Instead, carbon dissolves in the depleted metal to diffuse inward and precipitate as graphite within the metal matrix. Again, volume expansion causes disintegration of the alloy, and metal dusting results. Dusting occurs at an extraordinarily rapid rate, and leads to failure by section loss or even penetration.

A prototype EM Location System was fabricated and tested at the Geneva Mine near Dragerton, Utah. This system consisted of six manpack transmitters and six manpack receivers covering the frequency band from 900 Hz to 2900 Hz as well as a six channel receiver designed for use, in a helicopter. Tests showed that EM signals from lightweight (3/4 lb) transmitters could be detected both on the surface and from a helicopter through as much as 4450 ft of relatively high conductivity (2 X 10- 2 mhos/m) overburden. Furthermore, the resulting field strength profiles could be used to determine source location to within 150 ft of the actual surveyed location in the mine. Modifications were made to a Monitoring, Locating and Communications System being tested at the Bruceton Mine, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. These modifications have improved the performance and quality of the paging and voice telephony mode of the system. Subsurface receiver modifications have improved reception of voice downlink signals.

Effect of retrogression and reaging treatment on hardness and stress corrosion cracking resistance of 7075 aluminum alloy was investigated. As received 7075 alloys in T6 temper condition were retrogressed at 170, 220, 240 and 380°C for different durations between 15 s and 60 min. Subsequent reaging was made at the T6 aging condition. Treated materials exhibited higher hardness and better stress corrosion cracking resistance than T6 temper in a wide range of retrogression temperature and time. The highest hardness was obtained after retrogression at 170°C for 210 s followed by reaging, corresponding to 20% hardness improvement. Improvement in stress corrosion cracking resistance of the alloy by as much as 85% was also observed. In this paper, improvements in hardness and stress corrosion cracking resistance are discussed on the basis of the microstructural changes during retrogression and reaging treatment.

Advances in tunneling technology, such as Earth Pressure Balance and Slurry Shield methods, have allowed the tunneling industry to construct tunnels in increasingly difficult ground conditions. In recent years, a number of civil projects including large diameter train tunnels, subway tunnels, water tunnels, sewer tunnels, and combined sewer tunnels have been successfully completed deep beneath the water table in soft ground conditions utilizing modern day Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). With the increase in difficult ground conditions and higher water pressure comes the inherent need to utilize compressed air to gain access to the TBM?s cutterhead and cutting tools. This paper focuses on one such instance in Los Angeles, CA in which Traylor Brothers Inc. performed a cutterhead intervention by compressing the heading of an 11-foot diameter tunnel to approximately 3 bar gauge pressure. This paper focuses on the environmental controls used to manage ventilation, oxygen levels, temperature, and pressure, as well as discusses the problems associated with toxic gases and the increased risk of fire. The paper will also cover the physical science of the environment and the increased risks of performing basic job functions while in a compressed air heading.

THE furnace described in this paper was installed and has been used by the writer for the melting of rich gold-bearing material, and has given complete satisfaction. It may, therefore, prove of interest to other metallurgists who are faced with a similarproblem. A furnace of this type should be most suitable for the reduction of "cyanide preeipitate," "charcoal ash," "anode sludge," &c. formerly the melting was done in fire-clay crucibles, using coke or crude oil as fuel, but this method is costly, slow, and unsatisfactory. A small water-jacketed blastfurnace was also tried on this material after briquetting it, but was discarded in favour of the electric furnace. The furnace may be described as a simple form of the Heroult resistance furnace, with an adjustable upper electrode and a fixed bottom electrode. This is in accordanee with Stansfield's classification of electric furnaces. The heating is mostly due to the resistance offered the current by the molten slag. The melting chamber consists of a steel drum 14 in. in diameter and 21 in. high, and is lined with silica bricks specially made to fit the shell. The internal diameter is G in. The bricks contain 92 % silica, are made from calcined quartzite bonded with fireclay, and are similar in composition to those used for lining steel converters. They are set in a mixture of finely-ground quartzite and clay, and well dried out. The shell is bolted to a steel plate, which forms the decking of a truck running on rails, so that the furnace can be moved under ahood for carrying off the fumes. A cast-iron slag spout is bolted to the shell below the tapping hole, which is 4 in. from the bottom of the shell. "Assessment of opportunities to improve mineral processing performance in existing concentrators and in describing undeveloped orebodies is key to improving the business case of a mining company. This assessment has traditionally been performed using the distinct and separate inputs from Mineral Processing and Mineral Science.More recently, Process Mineralogy has been used to integrate these two disciplines. This trend has been driven by the need to develop and process more challenging ore deposits, and has been assisted by the availability of modern automated instruments. Together with the acquisition of a QemSCAN (Quantitative Evaluation of Materials by Scanning Electron Microscope) from CSIRO in Australia, and with the use of a supporting SEM with EDX / WDX capabilities and an XRD, the development of Process Mineralogy at Falconbridge commenced in 1997.The sampling challenges in presenting a QemSCAN with representative sample material at the polished section level are significant, but have been effectively addressed. The full description of this aspect is beyond the scope of this paper.It is shown that, by use of this approach, the set nature of an orebody can be best exploited with selected flowsheet changes in a concentrator which address the generic characteristics of the orebody. In this way, the flowsheet provides a process that more effectively fits the mineral processing requirements of the ore. This leads to clear and tangible improvements in grade and recovery."

The Bureau of Mines is sponsoring a variety of long-term, high-risk research to advance state-of-the-art technology in U.S. underground coal mining. This report reviews the status of many Bureau projects that support fundamental underground coal mining operations; the project areas include cutting coal from the solid (extraction), hauling coal from the face (transport), and activities that sustain daily operations (logistics). Innovative equipment and technology have been developed, with these major objectives: to significantly improve coal mine productivity, to further advance coal recovery and personal safety within the mining industry, and to reduce the time needed to develop longwall panels. The majority of the prototype equipment covered in this report either has undergone or will undergo comprehensive evaluation at Bureau surface test facilities so that performance and reliability can be improved before the equipment is tested and evaluated in a working section underground.

"Current and future operational processes in the mining and underground construction sector are under the influence of the prevalent competition and the acute necessity of optimization approaches concerning corporate and project processes. Besides general construction procedures, especially underground construction procedures and procedures in the field of deep shaft construction are high-profile. Those processes describe high technical challenges as well as increased requirements to occupational safety and health. Therefor an occupational safety management, which should be adjustable to the company itself and adaptable to all kinds of projects, shall be created. The creation of such an occupational safety management would lead to an economically optimized and safe (within the scope of OSH law) implementation of internal activities for the performance of construction services underground and in the field of deep shaft construction. With this approach the satisfaction of the high safety request as well as the demand for process optimization, as part of keeping the own competitiveness, will be satisfied successfully at once. PROJECT BACKGROUND Introduction The health and safety protection as well as occupational safety look back on a long historical development, which had brought more important sectors and developments during the last years, not only in Germany but also on the European and international level. The accident insurance protected by law has already been reported in 1884, which is astonishing early. The launch time point is strongly connected with the on-going economic development in the end of the 18th century, but above all this increased in the 19th century. The progress of occupational safety and especially the interest in the integration and the concentrated consideration of occupational safety and the health and safety protection in the company process is strongly visible during the 19th century and directly connected to the industrial revolution. [9] The industrial revolution and with that the development of work places lead to changing demands in the field occupational safety and health and safety protection. Insufficient security precautions caused problems in the industrial revolution, such as personnel and material losses as well as serious injuries and their consequences. These and the fundamental economic endeavours of the entrepreneurs lead therefore to the important step to develop an occupational safety system. [9] The prevailing basic ideas seize the insufficient security precaution of work places as well as the economical and profitable ideas of the entrepreneurs and bring them together. From this the necessary entrepreneur’s task comes into being and that is bringing the work conditions to the way that life and health of employees are not in danger. [9]"

The chief object of the Electrical Section of the United States Bureau of Mines is the study of causes and means of preventing accidents resulting from the use of electricity in mines . A large part of this work for the last 20 years has been the inspection and testing of mining equipment under the provisions of schedules which give the minimum requirements considered essential for the safety of equipment intended for use at or near the working faces of dusty or gassy mines . During the first few years of this work , particular attention was paid to the explosionproof features of the various accessories such as motors , controllers , and other parts . The knowledge of the essentials necessary for safe designs of enclosures has since been augmented by field experience and by data obtained in testing a large number and variety of designs . With our present knowledge it would seem that a disproportionate stress was placed on making the various enclosures explosionproof , but not enough thought was given to the danger from wiring and connections outside of explosionproof enclosures . The list of equipment that has met minimum requirements for safety and has been approved as permissible by the Bureau of Mines includes storage - battery locomotives , power trucks , drills , loading machines , conveyors , cutting machines , room hoists , pumps , concrete mixers , and rock-dusting machines . The wiring on some of the machines is comparatively simple and sometimes , except for the trailing cable , may be entirely within the explosionproof enclosures . In general , there is outside wiring between enclosures , and on the larger machines the wiring may be extensive and complicated . In considering the safety of wiring for mining machinery , attention must be given the severe service and unfavorable surroundings imposed by mining conditions . Some of the matters that require consideration are : ground . The lack of care of the exterior wiring to be expected in the average mine . The lack of adequate periodic inspection of the wiring . The absence of adequate facilities for satisfactory inspection and repairs under- The severe conditions of moisture , dirt , mechanical injury , and low voltage encountered in mining service .

According to OSHA 29 CFR Part 1910.119 (Process safety management of highly hazardous chemicals), Canadian Provincial Safety Standard Acts or Federal laws, the owner of stationary equipment (Boilers, stacks, piping, pressure vessel, etc.) should follow a complete inspection plan and follow an Integrity Operating Windows (IOW’s) adapted for each of them. Some important variables shall be included in the inspection plan such as specific damage mechanisms versus alloy used in the original design, process conditions, etc. Some North American’s standards exist, like the one listed in ASME PTB-2-2009, to help owner to create such inspection program. The new API RP 584, Integrity Operating Windows (IOW’s) can guide Mining & Metals owners to find out their specific IOW’s. Inspection frequencies are often described in the Jurisdiction Safety Acts such as the British Columbia B.C. Reg. 104/2004, etc. but often left in the owner representative responsibility (Bill C-21, federal Act to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act). Every deficiency should be repaired according to recognized Codes such as ASME PCC-2, etc.. If flaws not conforming to the original Code of construction are found, this article will introduce the Fitness-For- Service assessment principles to be able to accept it without any repairs.

The Morning Star mine is one of numerous historically mined gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield of southwest Fiordland. The mine is hosted in Early Ordovician metasedimentary rocks that are composed predominantly of psammitic and pelitic lithologies. These rocks still contain their primary depositional features and are characterised by upper greenschist facies metamorphic grade.   The Morning Star mine lies on the eastern limb of a gently south plunging anticline. A bedding parallel fault-vein and an associated network of minor quartz veins hosts mineralisation. The main fault-vein structure strikes N-NW, dips steeply (~60¦) W, has a strike length of ~350 m, a vertical extent of ~170 m and is up to 2 m in thickness. The internal structure of the fault-vein consists of laminated quartz, massive and fibrous quartz, and silicified breccias/cataclasites. Gold is typically coarse grained (~1 - 2 mm) and associated with pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite and galena. The geometry of the Morning Star mine is similar in form to that of a saddle reef. Gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield are comparable in geometry and host rock to their offset equivalents in the Golden Blocks field of NW Nelson.

PolyMet Mining is developing the NorthMet property near Duluth, Minnesota. Laboratory investigations had led to the development of the PLATSOL process to dissolve in one step the base metals (copper and nickel) as well as the gold and PGM’s. To complete the pre-feasibility study, a fully integrated ten-day pilot plant trial was undertaken, comprising of: high temperature (>220ºC) pressure oxidation in the presence of 5-10 g/L chloride (the PLATSOL process), followed by solid/liquid separation, gold plus PGM’s recovery from solution, conventional Cu SX/EW and recycling of the copper raffinate to the autoclave. The concentrate tested was a NorthMet bulk flotation concentrate assaying 14.7% Cu, 3.05% Ni, 0.14% Co, 26.7% S, 1.4 g/t Au, 2.2 g/t Pt and 9.9 g/t Pd. Laboratory results were fully confirmed and with minor adjustments of the laboratory PLATSOL® conditions, the following leach extractions were obtained during the pilot plant trial: Cu 99.6%, Ni 98.9%, Co 96%, Pd 94.6%, Pt 96% and Au 89.4%.

"Although global mineral resources are considered to be adequate to meet the needs of a rapidly growing world population, the United States is becoming increasingly dependent on imports. This could have implications for both the economy and national security. The US is a country with a strong tradition of leadership in science and technology. Impressive advances in autonomous underground mining systems reduce the adverse effects of heat and humidity in deep mines and focus renewed attention on ground control. Developments in computing power open opportunities to develop improved understanding of the important role of discontinuities (faults and fracture systems) and more effective design of deep excavations. Establishment of mining R&D Centers at leading US research universities, jointly funded by industry and US federal agencies is recommended as an effective step for the nation to remain an influential partner in world mining. INTRODUCTION. “None of the arts is older than agriculture, but that of metals is no less ancient.. . for no mortal man ever tilled a field without implements. If we remove metals from the service of man, all methods of protecting and sustaining health and more carefully preserving the course of life are done away with.” Agricola (1558)i Homo sapiens, generally acknowledged as the species from which modern Man has evolved, is considered to have originated in Swaziland some 100,000-200,000 years ago. Evidence of use of minerals in that region has been dated to earlier than 40,000 BC.ii Today, a large fraction of the elements of the Periodic Table are derived from minerals, and finding new applications in development of innovative technologies. Agricola’s comments are as applicable today as ever.iii Metals such as copper, tin, lead, iron and aluminum were mined and smelted several thousands of years BC. It was not until the Industrial Revolution, started in the latter half of the 17th Century in Northern England, where coal was available as an energy source, and iron as the basis for fabricating machinery, that dramatic change to society began to occur. Human toil was replaced by far more powerful machines. Rural communities migrated to work in factories in urban areas. Rapid transportation over long distances became possible, leading eventually to the world of today. The change spread to other parts of the world, bringing wealth and power. Although now well established in some regions, the Revolution has still to arrive in many other parts of the world. This can be seen in Figure 1, which shows the relative wealth, or ‘Standard of Living’ as measured by the GDP/capita, of regions around the world. Regions such as North America, Europe, and Australasia iv are seen to have the highest standard. Thanks to today’s global communications systems, regions with relatively low GDP/capita are well aware of ‘how others live’ – and eager to emulate them."

This report describes the design, construction, and operation of a low temperature adiabatic calorimeter for measuring heat capacities of solids or liquids from 60° to 300° K. A brief discussion of the basic theory involved in chemical thermodynamics and the problems involved in obtaining accurate experimental data is presented. The operation of the calorimeter was tested by measuring the heat capacity of a sample of benzoic acid obtained from the National Bureau of Standards over a temperature range of 60° to 300° K. The measured heat capacity values of the benzoic acid compared favorably with similar values obtained by the Bureau of Standards, the maximum deviation being 0.5 percent. THEORY A brief discussion of the basic theory involved in chemical thermodynamics will illustrate the applications of heat capacity data and the problems involved in obtaining accurate experimental data.

There is much debate on the Competent Persons qualifying criteria for providing classified resource estimates for public reporting. The CRIRSCO family of codes including the JORC Code, SAMREC, PERC and NI43–101, require Competent Persons to have at least five years ‘relevant’ experience and belong to professional bodies. These codes provide further, albeit vague, guidelines to assist individuals with their personal decision to take on the mantle of ‘Competent Person’. There is a risk, however, that these qualifying criteria can result in ill-prepared Competent Persons whose actions and recommendations would undermine their own reputation and that of the organisations that employ them; the integrity of the profession and the principles based reporting systems; as well as the stability of stock markets that rely on these estimates.Based on doctoral study on the development of professional competency within the mining industry, this paper presents an evaluation of the suitability of the current qualifying criteria as well as an analysis of alternative criteria. The research included a series of interviews with industry experts and an online survey of resource geologists. Semi-structured interviews provided a sense of experts’ expectations and interpretation of the current definition of ‘Competent Person’. The comprehensive online survey included a self-assessment, a series of situational questions designed to evaluate responses to typical resource geology scenarios and a set of open-ended questions relating to factors contributing to competency development.A summary of the data analysis, interpretation of the results and a set of recommendations for revised ‘Competent Person’ qualifying criteria are presented. This paper contributes to the conversation on what makes a person suitably qualified to report classified resource estimates and provides practical targets that can be used in the professional development of resource geologists.CITATION:Coombes, J, 2014. The numerous small high grade gold and silver deposits of the Front Range Mineral Belt have been uneconomical because of the high costs of mill construction, transportation, and smeltering. Processing of these ores must be simple, cheap, with satisfactory recoveries, and be environmentally acceptable. Vat leach with direct electrolytic recovery satisfies these parameters. A battery of testing was conducted utilizing bottle and bucket tests. A five ton vat leach with direct electrolytic recovery gave excellent results while a five ton heap leach proved impractical due to channeling.

The computer program described in this user's guide provides for the static, three-dimensional, linear and nonlinear analysis of structural and geological systems by the finite element method. The guide describes the capabilities and general features of the program and shows how input is prepared. A number of recent advances in finite element theory and computer technology are incorporated in the program. Nonlinear material properties are provided for, including isotropic, anisotropic, and time-dependent material properties, gravity loading, simulation of a sequence of excavation or construction, and a slip or joint element. The finite elements include beam, rod, axisymmetric and plane quadrilateral, hexahedron, thick shell, and axisymmetric and plane joint. The program also has an automatic mesh generator to minimize user input preparation for continuum finite element meshes.

The upgrading process of an inferior grade of zircon to a superior opacifier for ceramic applications was investigated. A calcining process in the presence of mineralizers was used to produce the product in a conventional muffle furnace. A pre-milled inferior grade zircon concentrate, with a relatively high iron and alumina content generally not suitable for high quality ceramic applications, was used in this study. The influence of the upgrading process on the opacifying properties of the zircon material was compared to that of commercially available prime grade zircon opacifier products currently being produced in South Africa. The influence of a calcining step in the presence of mineralizers with regard to the milling characteristics of the treated zircon material was also evaluated in this study. The morphology of the treated and untreated zircon opacifier samples were investigated by SEM micrographs and the colours of zircon samples were characterized on the grounds of the Commission Internationale de l`Eclairage (CIE) standard procedure (CIE L* a* b* measurements) after application on a bisque ceramic tile. It was found that the treatment improved both the milling as well as the opacifying properties of the treated inferior grade zircon concentrate and renders it equivalent to or better than prime grade zircon opacacifiers currently produced. Mining Lease SML 57 was registered to Mount Kasi on 5 January, 1995. The Mount Kasi gold mine is located in Vanua Levu, Fiji's second largest island and operated from 1932 to 1946 producing 261,000t of ore at an average grade of 7.5g/t Au. The deposit represents a structurally controlled style of high sulphidation copper gold mineralisation with peripheral low sulphidation mesothermal vein type gold mineralisation. The resource consists of 1,048,000 tonnes of residual soils (eluvium) containing 1.9 g/t Au at 0.5 g/t Au cut off and 1,240,000 tonnes of hard rock at 3.0 g/t Au and 1.0 g/t Au cut. 94 drill holes, 298 auger holes and 85 pits were modelled to outline the resource. 29% of the pits bottomed in mineralisation and it is likely the full thickness of eluvium has been understated. The pit is scheduled to produce 500,000 tonnes of ore per annum to yield 35,000 ounces of gold with an initial 2 years of eluvial ore followed by a further 2 years of hard rock ore. Total capital costs are estimated to be less than 10.0 million dollars with construction planned to commence in 1995. The likelihood of locating further ore is high.
