The new Hangzhou West Railway Station, which is currently in the early stages of construction, will be located in the city of Hangzhou, China. To accomplish the ambitious goals of the project, the construction work and station building was divided into three project areas. The original design utilizes 1,580 drilled shafts with diameters of either 800 mm or 1000 mm (32 or 40 inch) to support the new Station and its various ancillary structures. The drilled shafts will be tipped into the moderately weathered argillaceous siltstone a distance between 5 and 15 m (16.5 and 49 ft), resulting in an effective pile length ranging from 35 to 43 m (115 to 141 ft), respectively. For the first phase, approximately 550 production drilled shafts will be installed. Eight (8) sacrificial drilled shafts each with a diameter of 1000 mm (40 inch) were installed to a depth ranging from 50 to 57 m (164 to 187 ft), and were tested to confirm the design parameters used for the first phase, to evaluate the contractor’s installation means-and-methods, and to provide guidance whether redesign is warranted for the subsequent two phases. Bi-directional static load testing was performed using a donut-shaped Super Cell to apply unidirectional axial loads up to 13,200 kN (2,970 kip). This paper will describe the bi-directional testing and select results obtained therefrom. The axial compressive and uplift resistances determined from the testing verified that the available axial resistance of a single drilled shaft exceeded the minimum design requirements.

Imagine being able to see all the future planned mining activities in real time. This is exactly what SIMS (Short Interval Management System) will enable you to do. SIMS is a real time short interval control system that continuously measures and sets optimised plans for mining production processes. The system utilises algorithm-based software that takes resources (people, equipment, tasks, and workplaces) and gives you the best achievable plan. The algorithm was developed using methods found in the field of metaheuristics. A metaheuristic is a strategy to designed to efficiently search for optimal or near optimal solutions to problems that are very complex computationally. (Glover, 1986) There are several algorithms that have been developed to solve optimisation problems which are difficult to solve using traditional techniques. This has given rise to a field called evolutionary computing. (Simon, 2013) Examples of these techniques are genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimisation, and ant colony optimisation. These methods are used to solve problems in a variety of fields. As an example, Kok and Lane (2012) used particle swarm optimisation for equipment allocation in a mechanised underground mining environment. The first SIMS deployment took place in a platinum underground tabular mechanised mine near Burgersfort (province?) from 2017-2019. This included the development from a paper-based system to a fully operational online system. SIMS then moved to a second site and is currently being tested in a second platinum underground tabular mechanised mine in South Africa. Full deployment of the system is currently being phased in. SIMS was built in response to issues that have been plaguing the mining industry for years. These issues are all aligned into one major problem statement: how can we optimise mining production processes without compromising safety? This product was developed by combining years of mining experience with software development. SIMS is based on a four-pillar concept. Safety, productivity, accountability, and business improvement. SIMS uses a set of pre-configured mining and production rules, and with the resources that are available, to determine valid short term production plans. A background algorithm then determines the optimum plan to be executed. The system continuously produces a set of job cards that are pushed to respective operators on their allocated tablets. The management portal component allows you to view and manage all current and planned work on any connected device available. This allows real time visibility of completed, current, and planned work to operators, service departments and management, i.e., seeing into the future.

"The mine ventilation system plays an important role in mitigating human exposure to diesel particulate emissions (DPM), exhaust gases and heat in underground mines. The mine’s secondary ventilation systems are critical for diluting contaminants when working at the face of a heading. To improve these systems it is important to understand and visualise the localised air flow profiles. We have considered an approach that includes both tracer gas measurement–modelling to analyse this complex flow behaviour in a heading. The use of tracer gas enables reliable measurements of flow behaviour and differentiation between the contributions of various contaminant sources including DPM. A pilot study was conducted to demonstrate how tracer gas can be used to directly measure the effectiveness of ventilation dilution in a heading during shotcrete activity. This activity is considered to be one of the more challenging areas for diesel exhaust exposure management. Exposure sources include the diesel engine of the spraying equipment (Spraymech) and concrete agitator truck (Agi) that supplies the shotcrete. During operation both the Spraymech and Agi operators are located outside the equipment’s air-conditioned cabins and both are exposed to diesel exhaust. In the pilot study tracer gas was injected directly into the Spraymech exhaust stream. This allowed thorough mixing, ensuring the tracer gas was able to track exhaust gases and particulates released to the heading. The release was repeated at three different headings with varying degrees of secondary ventilation controls. The study showed that small changes to the secondary ventilation system can significantly impact the contaminant concentration. It also demonstrated that tracer gas can be used to isolate different contaminant sources. The intent is to use this technique in a more comprehensive study to develop best practice guidelines for secondary ventilation installations. Upward pressure on all mining operations is coming from the triple bottom line. To some extent this is being offset by the rise in mineral prices, but this may or may not continue. The other serious issue facing all companies is the replacement of economic reserves as exploration levels over the past decade continued to decline in line with falling mineral prices. In order to underpin the sustainability of the mining industry it is necessary to continue to reduce cost, reduce the mine environmental footprint, whilst increasing community benefit. At the same time it is imperative that we increase the economic reserves. The highest risk is in adding new mineral discoveries as the strike rate for economic discovery decreases. Gekko Systems Pty Ltd recognises that the most simple and risk averse route to increasing economic reserves is to reduce cut-off grade in the mine, thereby bringing formerly uneconomic reserves into the economic category. We have been developing a new process flow sheet which embodies the triple bottom line and the issue of economic replacement of reserves. This paper describes this flow sheet and presents four examples where this concept is/can be applied to bring about triple bottom line benefits. Sustainability can only be assured if we are the ones in control of our environment, costs and reserves.

The 1981 Review: In the late 1970s there was an upsurge of interest in the prospecting and mining of this countryÆs mineral resources. That upsurge of interest was accompanied by a mounting public concern over the damage mining operations might do to the environment. Concern was also expressed about what some people perceived as inadequacies in the legislation which regulates mining and the grant of mining privileges, and inconsistencies in the relationship of that legislation to other legislation regulating land use and the use of resources.

The project implementation phase, FEL4, is generally a complex undertaking. The project has been approved for construction and the capital has been allocated. At this point the project team comes under significant pressure to meet the safety, schedule, cost, and start-up committments. For the design team the principal tasks are to finalize detailed design, complete procurement, and issue construction contracts. Design activities must be closely coordinated with equipment and material procurement. A clear engineering plan should be based on well-defined work packages to meet construction, commissioning, and startup requirements. A range of review processes by discipline, area, and third parties assure quality. Constructability, safety, and hazard reviews are performed throughout the design process. Three-dimensional models that incorporate extensive databases help to maximize efficiency and minimize errors. Well-managed projects have a clearly accountable design team, rigorous change control processes, and well-defined workflows. Key individuals from the design team participate in commissioning, operator training, and startup.

The Bureau of Mines (BOM) evaluated the technology, capital investment, and annual operating costs of emission control for further reductions of lead in ambient air at the East Helena, Montana, smelter, and the Glover, Herculaneum, and Buick smelter-refineries in Missouri. This study seeks to analyze the technology available to the domestic primary lead industry for attempting to further reduce lead emissions below 1985 levels. Through enclosure of concentrate unloading and handling areas and all lead-processing buildings, followed by venting these enclosures to the atmosphere through baghouses and the application of appropriate local controls, emissions can theoretically be reduced by a total of 2,424 pounds of lead per day from 1985 levels at the three Missouri operations. Using conventional technology, aggregated additional capital costs of $250,014,000 and annual operating costs of $18,507,800 are estimated for the four operations, resulting in a total cost of $0.063 per pound of refined lead. Continuous drossing techniques would assist in meeting OSHA standards in process areas. Continuous drossing would change capital and operating costs to $258,344,800 and $16,104,700, respectively, for a total cost of $0.062 per pound of refined lead. First quarter, 1986 open market price for refined lead was $0.184 per pound.

The aim of short-term production scheduling is to decide which blocks of ore and waste to mine in which time period (shift, days, weeks or months) so that several operational and geometrical constraints can be satisfied simultaneously. Since 1960s several mathematical programming approaches were developed for solving production scheduling problems that are based on a combination of various operational research approaches such as linear programming (LP), integer programming (IP), dynamic programming (DP), etc. A number of models have been developed in the past three decades but some models have limited application especially to geometrical mining constraints. One of the geometrical constraints is block accessibility. All blocks must be accessible to mining equipments on the same bench. In this paper a binary integer programming model is developed in order to incorporate block accessibility constraints in an efficient manner. This mathematical model insures that each block has been open and can be loaded and transported easily by shovels and trucks.

The definition of mineral rents has historically been somewhat unclear, but a growing understanding of the source and composition of the revenues that comprise these rents mean that they can be more easily identified and quantified. Furthermore the way in which the flow of the rents from mineral developments are captured and then distributed has been a point of contention amongst the various stakeholders. Investors, the host government, the resource owners, environmental interests, indigenous groups and land owners are identified in this paper as the principal participants in mineral development and while each is entitled to a portion of the rent, the size of their portions will differ. A competitive rent-sharing model for southern African countries has been established and indicates how the range of stakeholders could be rewarded for their contribution. Acceptance of the sharing ratios amongst the recipients is a function of their understanding of the size of the rent and their position in the hierarchy of stakeholders. At first glance investors appear to receive the largest share of the rent, but they disburse some of the rent to hidden costs, which when all is said and done, means that investors and host governments retain approximately equal shares of the mineral rent. Both the investor and government are faced with the dilemma of how to equitably distribute the rents they have captured to minority stakeholders. Government captures corporate tax, mineral royalties and a wide range of subordinate taxes, but is required to construct policies that will ensure distributional equity among the various levels of government as well as among the provinces that comprise the country. Investors will have to ensure that a portion of the rents they capture are diverted to other stakeholders namely resource owners, environmental interests, indigenous peoples groups and the landowners. This paper identifies the major recipients of rent and provides some indication of equitable distribution ratios for mineral wealth among them?a first step in ensuring that mineral development is compatible with long-term sustainable development and in the best national interests.

"Synthetic Aperature Sonar (SAS) is a powerful tool for ultra-high resolution marine survey. The Kongsberg HiSAS system deployed on the HUGIN AUV has a rangeindependent resolution of 3x3 cm for sonar image and ~10x10cm for the interferometric bathymetry product [1]. This resolution is achievable for areas up to 50 km2 on a single survey mission providing huge multi-attribute datasets. This technology, originally designed for military and oil-industry applications, has the potential to revolutionize scientific seafloor mapping. The extreme resolution of this technique allows for deposit mapping in and around seafloor hydrothermal systems, including the discovery of extinct venting structures. By clearly distinguishing between volcanic and hydrothermal landscapes based on features below the resolution of conventional multibeam systems, SAS enables an entirely new level of hydrothermal deposit survey. Additionally due to the extreme resolution of this survey technology, repeat survey and change detection should allow centimeter-scale changes in deposit morphology to be routinely detected over an entire hydrothermally venting region. In collaboration with the EU funded MIDAS project, the Centre for Geobiology at the University of Bergen will deploy the HUGIN AUV this summer at two distinct shallow venting systems on the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge system. The AUV will collect repeat bathymetry at the Jan Mayen Vent Field, and extend the SAS coverage to include newly discovered venting sites. We will present the preliminary findings of this expedition, including the first deposit estimations made from full-resolution SAS mosaics."

The main objective of batch grinding modeling is the estimation of the product particle size distribution over time or specific energy input to the mill. So far, the developed analytical methods require often complicated calculations which are timeconsuming. Thus, more simple approaches that allow the reliable prediction of the complete product size distribution need to be developed. In the present paper, an approach, based on the population balance model (PBM), that reliably predicts the product size distribution is proposed. In order to enable this, the simplified form of the fundamental batch grinding equation was transformed into the well-known Rosin–Rammler (R-R) distribution, thus allowing the determination of the breakage rate for each grinding period. A time-dependent breakage rate framework was developed where the traditional linear theory of the PBM is considered a partial case. This approach allows the deviations from the linear theory to be categorized and the degree of the acceleration-deceleration of the breakage rate to be predicted. Modeling results were validated by laboratory grinding studies using two homogeneous materials, quartz and marble, and one heterogeneous, a limonitic laterite. The experimental data revealed that grinding exhibits non-first-order behavior and the degree of deviation from the linear theory depends on the tested material. The reliability of the proposed model was validated with the use of the distribution modulus n, the a value of the breakage rate parameter, and the optimum n values that minimize the sum of the differences between the experimental and estimated particle size distributions.

The Cadia Hill Gold Mine, located near Orange in Central Western New South Wales, is owned and operated by Cadia Holdings Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited. Construction including pre-strip mining occurred from 1996 to 1998. The mine was officially opened in October 1998 following commissioning of the concentrator and mine fleet in June of that year. The Cadia Hill orebody is a porphyry related gold and copper system. The final pit has a strip ratio of approximately 1.3:1.0. Mining is undertaken on 15 metre benches using large capacity diesel hydraulic face shovels at an annualised rate of up to 70 Mtpa. The concentrator is currently rated at 17Mtpa and includes the worldÆs largest single line grinding circuit. The feasibility Mineral Resource was estimated at 352 Mt at 0.63 g/t Au and 0.17 per cent Cu. Initial reserves totalled 200 Mt at 0.74 g/t Au and 0.17 per cent Cu yielding a mine life of approximately 12 years. During the pre-production period mine geology systems were developed to support the operation. By design these systems were intended to add value to the business through minimisation of material miss-classification, provision of accurate and timely production information and mapping and reconciliation as a continuous model improvement tool. Variances that would prove to be material to the life of mine plan were recognised during the first year of production. These included identification of additional ore tonnes, higher copper grades and higher gold recoveries relative to the model. Gold grades and copper recoveries also reconciled favourably. Testwork was undertaken to determine the underlying causes of each variance. Re-modelling was then undertaken to capitalise on those variances. The Cadia Hill Gold Mine life of mine plan was re-evaluated with updated geology, grade, geotechnical, metallurgical and environmental inputs. Operating strategies were also reviewed and revised. Despite application of reduced metal prices in the evaluation, the outcome was one of extended mine life with more metal produced at lower cost. Development of robust mine geology systems, including a pro-active reconciliation process contributed to tangible improvement of the Cadia Hill Gold Mine operation. On-going system development and improvement initiatives are planned to add further value for the future.

The Bureau of Mines t.ced its investigations into sympathetic detonation of ammonium nitrate (AN) and ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to define the scaling law for safe separation from detonating AN-FO. Both missile- and non-missile-producing AN-FO donors, weighing up to 5,400 pounds, were employed with acceptors of the same size. The usual cube-root scaling law was not confirmed; exponents for the relationship S = f(Wx) for AN were 0.51 with non¬missile-producing donors and 0.61 for missile-producing donors. For AN-FO an exponent of 0.80 was indicated in the missile-producing case. AN-F0 in polyethylene bags appeared somewhat more easily initiated than bulk AN-FO. The efficacy of barricades in protecting AN charges was investigated. detonation distances were reduced from one-third to one-seventh when filled barricades were employed. The investigation was extended to dynamite with both types of donors. With 1,600-pound missile-producing donors and an equivalent weight of dynamite, initiation would be expected in 50 percent of the trials at 167 feet. The corresponding value in the non-missile case was 67 feet. The data developed in this program of sympathetic detonation will allow the development of a rational set of safe separation distances for AN, AN-FO, and explosives.

This paper describing the milling methods at the Hughesville concentrator of the St. Joseph Lead Co., Hughesville, Mont., is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on practices at the various mills in the United States. The writer expresses his thanks for the courtesies extended by the officials of the company while visiting the property and acknowledges the assistance and helpful suggestions given by R. H. A review of technical literature covering Canadian mining emphasizes the advancement and changes that have been made in mining practice. However, current technical publications rarely outline basic principles or state definite rules that govern profitable mine operation. it may be argued that the broad principles of mining have long a go been outlined in various handbooks, text-books, and periodicals, and that these principles never alter. This is in great part true, but modern machinery, improved meta1-lurgical practice, and other advances, have in part modified these principles or changed the manner of their application. Many engineers hesitate to state specific rules, because it is so easy to quote an exception to a rules that any such statement appears to lose weight upon its very utterance. The exception to rules, and the reluctance to formulate rules, has forced such maxims as "the only rule in mining is the point of a pick," and "gold is where you find it". As an illustration of rules and their exceptions, one might quote the time-honoured maxim that a mill should not be built before a shaft has been sunk on a property in point of fact, Canadian mining history is replete with examples of wasted capital where a mill was built before a shaft had been bottomed. Y et this past year has seen a property enter profitable production whereon the building of the mill was started before the shaft was sunk. Instances such as this should not be accepted as evidence that a rule has been overthrown, but rather as an exception to the rule. The case cited pays tribute to the application of the diamond-drill combined with the correlation of sound geology. Incidentally, both these features emphasize a modern trend in the development of Canadian mining properties-a trend that is perhaps worthy of further comment. It is such trends that affect the principles of mining or modify their application. It is with such that this paper deals, at ]east in part. It is hoped that the statement of principles and the opinions herein outlined will be of sufficient interest to arouse discussion.

Noise control of existing pneumatic drills is difficult and runs into cost, performance and weight penalties. A need exists for a start-from-scratch approach for quiet pneumatic rock drills. The designs based on Leavell Principles which has been successfully used in demonstrating a quiet and vibration free paving breaker, is the concept chosen here. This report shows the feasibility of a quiet stoper for drilling roof bolt holes in coal mines. The work is directly applicable to pneumatic percussive rock drills. The report shows an oscillator based on patented Leavell concepts which results in a vibration free tool and noiseless exhaust. Dynamics of the oscilator is analyzed. Independant rotation of drill rod is provided by an air motor (screw expander) and flushing of cuttings is accomplished by an air ejector in a compact lower housing. The feasibility of no exhaust noise, low drill machine noise, and vibration free casing is discussed.

Resin-in-pulp (RIP) technology has recently often been considered for the direct recovery of base metals and uranium from dense pulps. Implementation of RIP will eliminate the requirement for any solid-liquid separation downstream of leaching and has the potential to combine the recovery and purification steps, hence reducing both capital and operating costs. The recovery of the valuable metal is expected to be higher when RIP is used, especially where the leached solids are difficult to settle or filter, and to wash. The main concerns about the use of RIP for uranium recovery from dense pulps are the impact of silica on the resin?s metallurgical performance and the operating costs that would be associated with resin loss. Although a number of resin manufacturers have been developing much improved RIP-grade resins, it is critical that the most cost-effective resin be selected. Mintek currently is doing a significant amount of work on silica fouling of RIP-grade strong-base resins in acidic leach liquors and the effect it has on the performance of the resin, including its durability. This paper describes the results of the test work done on silica fouling and its impact on plant design input data. Resin durability test work was done using various laboratory techniques, but durability was also evaluated on a relatively large scale using actual pumps, screens, and mechanical agitation. Based on the results generated, a preliminary economical evaluation was done to estimate the impact of resin loss on the overall economic viability of a specific application. Circulating Air Classification of Manufactured Sand Due to environmental concerns, the supply and use of natural gravel has been limited by the Swedish government. The Swedish concrete industry is therefore examining manufactured sand as an alternative that has equal or better product quality, and which the Swedish quarry industry already has the ability to deliver. However, in order to comply with the specifications set by the concrete industry, a better means of classification is needed, as the proportion of fine particles (filler) smaller than 63 - 125 ¦m in size must be reduced. One classification technology that meets the requirements may be air classification. This paper examines the process of circulating air classification, which is not yet commonly used in the Swedish quarry industry; suggesting that a better understanding of the process is needed. The circulating air classifier in this study has two internal machine parameters that can affect the separation point; namely, the speeds of the circulating fan and the separator fan. We study their effect on the separation point as well as the interaction between these parameters. Full-scale parameter tests are also conducted, in which size distribution is measured before and after the circulating air classification. This study shows how the different parameters affect the separation point and that it is possible to produce manufactured sand according to specifications. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD, Fluent) is used to study the internal flow of the air circulating within the classifier. A single-phase study of the flow field is conducted to support and explain the findings from the full-scale tests.

Fire in a coal mine can be disastrous on many levels. In most cases, when a fire is detected, mining operations cease and all personnel are evacuated. Underground coal-mine fires are difficult to extinguish, can burn for a long time, and often result in an extended period of lost production. In a worst-case scenario, the mine is permanently sealed and abandoned, resulting in lost jobs, lost natural resources, and possible devastation of the local economy. In some cases, seals placed within the mine to isolate the fire could eliminate the need for sealing the entire mine and the subsequent extended delay in returning the mine to full operation. Previous attempts to place remote seals to extinguish mine fires in active mines have been largely unsuccessful. The West Elk mine experienced an underground fire in early 2000. The fire could not be accessed and extinguished from the active mine workings. A method of constructing seals remotely by drilling boreholes into the affected area was needed to help isolate and extinguish the fire. This paper describes the process by which remote seals were constructed that successfully isolated the fire and provided a means of extinguishing the fire by flooding the area with water. The period of lost production in the West Elk mine was considerably shorter than is typical in similar situations.
