AS PREVIOUSLY announced, the semi-centennial meeting of the Institute is to be held at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on Sept. 12, 13, 14, and 15. An interesting program of technical sessions and excursions is now being prepared by the Local Committee. At the time of going to press the program had not been completed in sufficient detail to permit its being pub¬lished in this number. The detailed program will be published in the September MINING AND METALLURGY, which will be printed in time to be distributed before the Wilkes-Barre Meeting. It may be said in advance, however, that the Com¬mittee has progressed so far in its work that we are assured of one of the -most notable meetings the Insti¬tute has held and that members will miss a rare .treat if they do not attend. The many trips and excursions, as well as the banquet, will be -given to the members as a compliment from the members of the Local Com¬mittee. . . The paper by Howard Eavenson on the Lynch Plant of -the United States Coal and Coke Co. will be illustrated by lantern slides and moving pictures. One of the most appropriate discussions will be that opened by Prof. J. F. Kemp on the Stratigraphy of the Anthracite Region; this also will be amply illustrated.

Upstream Classifier are well-known in the iron ore industry for at least 15 years. At present, more than 60 units are in operation in Western Australia. The advantage of this technology is their capability to produce three products with one equipment – iron ore concentrate, iron ore middlings for further processing and slimes (tailings). The principal of this beneficiation process – upstream classification and upstream separation – will always remain. However, the optimisation of the classification and separation efficiency of the equipment itself is a continuous process driven by enhanced automation and instrumentation, design changes and the use of upstream and downstream information and requirements. Besides efficiency, the safety, maintenance and replacement conditions are very important subjects for the operation of an iron ore mine. The aim of this paper is to present a new allflux® upstream classifier design, which has been developed together with several iron ore producer from Western Australia. The new design benefits from its sustainability approach by dividing the entire equipment into small reusable parts. As a result, maintenance is minor, replacement much faster, lifetime much longer and costs much lower. Furthermore, it demonstrates new features to prevent hazardous working conditions such as confined space as well as new fixing devices to speed up the replacement of certain items and parts.

"The purpose of the project is to convert current shuttle car utilization on an underground coal mine to best practice by focusing on change-out points and tramming routes, which have a major influence on shuttle car away times. Time studies were an integral part of the project as these enabled the determination of shuttle car away times. An indirect proportional relationship between shuttle car away times and productivity is established. Through the time studies, it is deduced that a third shuttle car will make an insignificant contribution to production when there is only one split open. During this time, maintenance on the third car can be optimized. In order to satisfy the mine’s key performance indicator of keeping shuttle car away times less than 75 seconds, a belt extension must be scheduled after the third split is open. It is established that at any given time, a minimum of two shuttle cars should be used. When cutting on the left-hand-side of the belt road with only two shuttle cars available, the centre and left (left of the feeder breaker) shuttle cars should be used for coal hauling. When cutting on the right-hand-side, the centre and the right-hand-side cars should be used. If only one shuttle car is available, the centre car is the most efficient to use. Alternative anchoring configurations can be employed so as to enable cars (left or right, especially) to reach the opposite extremities of the panel and hence minimize cable length restrictions. Test work is the foundation upon which the success of projects and subsequent operations is laid, reflected in Professor Arthur Taggart’s pithy observation: ‘Make your mistakes on the small scale and your profits on the larger scale’. Indeed, Professor AllanTrench has succinctly noted that ‘Get the metallurgical characteristics wrong and you don’t have a project’.With deposits becoming lower grade, more structurally and mineralogically complex, final products requiring lower levels of impurities and tailings management demanding more attention, test work now assumes even greater significance in the acceptance and successful execution of a project. This paper is the first in a series aiming to stimulate thought on the metallurgical test work process by getting back to the fundamental basics through exploring and providing some guidelines for the metallurgical testing world, noting preferred practices as well as precautions and mitigations. This covers the key characteristics of metallurgical test work programs, including what needs to be done, sample selection, quality control and associated drivers, and most importantly, selecting, assessing and managing test work facilities. Australia is presently enjoying the fruits of a booming iron ore market. Expectations are that market strength will be supported in the short to medium term by increasing feedstock demands from steel mills, as world economies rebuild post-Covid-19. However, as cost and environmental pressures increase the longer-term market outlook will be dominated by product quality. The ‘flight to quality’ will place increasing demands on direct shipping ore miners as they compete to maintain their standing in the iron ore marketplace. China will progressively disengage from its dependence on Australian imports, leaving miners under increasing pressure to boost product quality and diversify outlets globally. Australia has vast deposits of low-grade magnetite ores located mainly in remote and arid regions of the continent. This paper proposes a dry grinding and magnetic separation process to produce premium concentrate grades from the low-grade ores, to assist in meeting future product quality demands. The premium grade concentrates could be either blended with lower quality direct shipping ores or marketed separately. The proposed dry concentration process involves the pairing of Vertical Roller Milling (VRM), a mature technology widely used in the cement industry, and Planar Magnetic Separation (PMS), a new methodology, which has been developed to the threshold of commercialisation by the private Australian company Cyclomag P/L. Two laboratory prototype planar magnetic separators with field strengths of 1800 gauss and 6000 gauss have been built and tested on a range of magnetite ore types over the past three years. In each case, following grinding to liberation sizes, a combination of roughing and cleaning operations has produced pellet grade concentrates. Vertical roller milling has competed successfully with conventional media milling in grinding cement clinker, limestone and blast furnace slags. A key advantage of dry VRM/PMS processing is its potential adaptability to stepwise modular development, which can minimise initial capital investment, while generating early revenue streams to cope with unpredictable market volatility.

This report summarizes cost data accumulated during 15 months of sustained operation of the Bureau of Mines Boulder City (Nev.) titanium plant, which had a capacity of about 1,350 pounds of titanium sponge per day. The plant was constructed during the 1952 fiscal year with funds supplied by the Ordnance Corps, Department of the Army. Its original purpose was to engage in process development work as a continuing phase of the Bureau of Mines policy to seek improvements in producing titanium metal. In early 1953 the Defense Materials Procurement Agency contracted with the Bureau of Mines for producing approximately one-half million pounds of usable ductile titanium sponge. Production began in May 1953, ended in September 1954, and yielded 492,503 pounds of acceptable metal. Operating costs covering this period of operation, with suggested depreciation and administrative costs, are given, as well as outlines of building and equipment capital costs. In addition, miscellaneous economic considerations are discussed, including labor and operating-time schedules.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW)promotes public understanding and education related to the mining industry. Towards this goal, the Foundation has funded several projects from donations and fundraising activities. The MFSW was incorporated in 1993 by combining the Mining Club of the Southwest and the Mining Club of the Southwest Foundation. The Mining Club began in 1971 as a social organization. It provided members of the mining community an opportunity to meet. The club also provided a means for public education about mining. In the early 1990s, the club’s efforts were directed mainly toward educational activities. And in 1992, discussions began concerning incorporation into a non-profit foundation to further the public understanding of mining. In 1983, the American Mining Hall of Fame was inaugurated to honor significant contributors to the industry and profession. The Hall of Fame serves to educate people about prominent persons associated with the mining industry, present and past. The honorees number 75. Plaques commemorate their induction and are on display at the Arizona Historical Society’s Museum in Tucson, AZ. The combined honors ceremony and banquet have remained one of the fund raising activities.

The effects of solidification rate (0.4-26.1 K/s) and alloying elements on the cast microstructures of aluminum alloy 5182 have been investigated with directionally cooled laboratory-size ingots. The alloying elements examined included Mg (3.6-4.7 wt.%), Mn (0.35-0.75 wt.%), Fe (0.11- 0.42 wt.%), Cu (0.03-0.25 wt.%), and Si (0.11-0.28 wt.%). These reflect the chemical compositions of AA 5182 end stocks with high recycled used beverage container (UBC) content. For a given chemical composition, the average dendrite cell and constituent phase particle size decreased with increase in average solidification rate. In general, within the level investigated, Mg did not have a significant effect on the types, volume fractions, and average sizes of the constituent phase particles. However, increase in Mn, Si, Fe, and Cu increased average sizes and volume fractions of the constituent phase particles.

Mining has always been, and still is, an activity which is vital for the development of mankind. This is because a predominant proportion of industrial products and energy is produced from raw materials that are excavated using mining methods. The need for environmental protection and the close proximity of urban settlements and mines in Slovenia have necessitated ever stricter requirements for the excavation of raw materials and the introduction of more environmentally-friendly mining methods. This is achieved by implementing a closed eco-technological cycle of raw material excavation within the scope of mining methods. In surface mines, this means prompt reclamation of the degraded surfaces, and in underground mines the use of methods with minimized impact on the surface and on underground water. In underground mines, mining methods with backfilling installed according to the multi-barrier disposal system are the only ones that allow the possibility of implementing a closed eco-techno-logical cycle of excavating raw materials. Various industrial waste materials are also included in the backfilling material in order to improve its strength properties. Backfilling consisting of several different waste materials is produced in the form of a composite. Before backfilling consisting of waste material composites can even begin to be used in mines, an environmental impact assessment of its suitability for mines needs to be made. In order to make such an assessment, a pressure leaching cell and an open diffusion cell were made, i.e. a pressure leachate test and a sorption test were developed. The two cells and the developed tests will enable the study of the influence of backfilling on the environment if installed in an underground mine. The pressure leachate test performed with the use of the pressure leaching cell simulates leaching from a consolidated backfill during the seeping of underground water into the backfilling material under pressure. The sorption test performed in an open diffusion cell simulates the flow of eluate leached from the backfilling material through the rock/geotechnical barrier. The two tests were developed in such a manner that they are performed either in succession immediately after one another, but they can also be performed separately at a certain time interval. The paper presents an assessment of the suitability of backfilling made of different waste material composites. The upper Arkansas basin has some of the greatest potential for geothermal development in Colorado. Over several summers, students conducted an investigation using seismic, gravity, and magnetics in order to help identify the large structures and basin fill associated with the Rio Grande Rift. Adjacent to Mount Princeton Hot Springs, near surface geophysics was conducted to help understand the faulting and fractures that act as a conduit for hydrothermal flow. The methods used included high frequency 3D seismic, magnetics, gravity, D.C. resistivity, and self potential. Throughout the Mount Princeton area, passive seismic, vertical seismic profiling, and well logging were also used to better understand the geology and activity of the region. The results indicate for the area northwest of the hot springs, a 40 to 50 m thick unconsolidated layer overlying the fractured granitic basement. The DC profile shows a deep geothermal anomaly of low resistivity which correlates with a positive SP anomaly in the same region. In the Chalk Creek valley, a shear zone extends from the north east to the south west, just south of the Chalk Cliffs. There appears to be an upward migration of the water through this shear zone which then flows along the porous sediments towards the south in this area. The deep seismic data collected in the center of the basin suggests that the depth to the basement is approximately 2000m. Also identified on the deep seismic are two major faults on the west end and two minors at the east end of the cross-section. An alteration zone is identified between the faults and a possible Precambrian northeast trending shear zone. The potential for developing an Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) near the center of the valley is high. Our geophysical results indicate a deep basin fill near the center of the basin providing high temperatures. The range front (Sawatch) fault is observed to penetrate under the center of the basin and is an attractive target for natural fractures.

Large metallurgical complexes are substantial users of energy, water and assets. To improve the effectiveness of energy and assets the quality of the data and events become paramount for real-time operational management. A lack of resources at the local operations and at the enterprise makes it impossible to process the sea of information and many projects have failed. As such, a novel approach for implementation of continuous improvements at the local level and innovations at the strategic level was implemented at all operating plants at Anglo American Platinum. Sixteen concentrators, three smelters and two refinery process systems were integrated to scale the information for manufacturing services at the local and enterprise level. The new capability of an enterprise real-time monitoring and diagnosis software infrastructure was available to implement many business strategies in tandem. Mineral and metallurgical processing knowledge is used to simplify the implementation of the data model. As such, asset monitoring, energy, production and process control management were implemented in an integrated approach reusing the same data but with different context and time horizons to have a standard methodology for local root cause analysis. This paper will highlight a sustainability management approach to change and empower the local and strategic team to collaborate using a new approach for adaptive reporting and condition-based event management and notifications. The results based on the integrated and collaborative team efforts will be presented. A pilot plant was constructed for the low temperature carbonization of Wallarah (N.S.W.) coal at the rate of 300 lb/hr. The design was based on an entrained state carbonizer developed by Parry and D.S. Bureau of Mines co-workers. Prior to delivery to the client, the plant was successfully operated over periods of several days duration.INTRODUCTIONIn September 1961, the Australian Mineral Development Laboratories (A.M.D.L.) was engaged by the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. (B.H.P.) to design, construct and test an entrained state coal carbonizer with a capacity of 300 lb/hr of Wallarah (N.S.W.) coal. Char product was required within the specification 15·5 -I- 1 per cent volatile matter. The design was to be based on a pilot plant developed by Parry and others in the D.S. Bureau of Mines Coal Research Laboratory at Denver, D.S.A. The method involved the carbonization of fine coal by entrainment with air in an externally heated reactor. The heat required for the carbonization of the coal was to be supplied to the bed both through the reactor walls, and also by internal combustion of products in the bed. Several D.S. Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations weFe used as the main guide to the physical layout and proportions of the plant. However, the individual units required detailed designing, before engineering drawings could be prepared and fabrication begun.A 10 ton sample of crushed Wallarah coal was used for preliminary testing of the plant. The first test run on the pilot plant was carried out in February, 1962. After some modification a second test of longer duration was conducted in August, 1962. DESCRIPTION OF OREThe ore consists, in general, of a very finely grained mixture of sphalerite, galena, and pyrite, with a gangue of quartz and schistose material, and contains about one ounce of silver to the unit of lead.Minor minerals are chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, and ruby silver. The amount of gangue within the ore-bodies themselves is usually less than 20% of the weight of the whole. The ore is banded in a way that corresponds to the structure of the original schists, and is by no means uniform in composition-at one point, for example, blende may predominate, and a few feet farther on the body may become highly pyritic.Owing to the intimate association of the mineral constituents of the ore, it is very difficult to separate them from one another.Although this remark applies to ore from all parts of the field, the difficulty is particularly noticeable with Rosebery ore, the minerals of which are more intimately mixed, and are of smaller grain size than are the minerals of the Hercules ore.To effect a reasonably clean separation, it is necessary to grind the ore so that 90% passes a 200-mesh I.M.M. screen. Microscopic examination of the crushed product shows that 85% of the minus 200-mesh material is less than 30 microns in diameter, or, in terms of screen sizing, is minus 400 mesh. Particles under 30 microns are found to consist, of one mineral only, but in particles over this size separation has not always been effected. For instance, it is known that part of the galena and of the pyrite in the zinc concentrate is associated with sphalerite, and that part of the galena in the mill residue is associated with pyrite. There is only slight association between the minerals in the lead concentrate.

"This paper describes how to make advanced control choices when difficult processes need improvement. The decision-making process involves choosing between a rules-based approach and a model-based approach as well as weighing benefits and drawbacks, complexity and simplicity, investment and results. This paper will present briefly each solution: basic control, advanced regulatory control, model predictive control, and expert systems such as fuzzy logic controllers and neural networks. The article then proposes a decision tree for selecting the most appropriate approach. A table will compare usage, development, commissioning, maintenance and lifecycle costs for each approach. Finally, conclusions and suggestions will summarize the methodology.INTRODUCTION Advanced process control (APC) is a popular topic. How can one decide whether advanced control should be added to an existing system? Advanced control is used to improve performance, stabilize production, handle constraints, protect equipment and manage grade changes. Most plants use feedback controllers, usually PID (proportional, integral, derivative) controllers. It is common to develop special control schemes to handle more complex processes. In classic PID process control, a controller brings a single value close to a set point using a single manipulated variable. On the other hand, APC brings several values close to optimal targets simultaneously using several manipulated variables. APC's four main strategies are advanced regulatory control, model predictive control (MPC), fuzzy logic and neural networks. Simple solutions are always preferred. Complexity will be increased if performances (production, quality, etc.) are below par. Profitability analyses should be conducted to validate project viability. Needs—not trends—should dictate choices! Before increasing complexity, it is important to define needs, goals, technical support, budget, etc. All these approaches entail strengths and weaknesses. Building a project based on technology rather than needs spells trouble."

This report describes a computer-based model for estimating the tangible costs of injuries and deaths from work-related accidents in underground coal mines. The study undertook to identify and quantify the elements of accident costs, including field visits to coal mines, insurance carriers, and public agencies. The mathematical models developed for each tangible element of accident cost are presented in Volume I of the report. A listing of the computer programs which comprise the model and instructions for using the programs are presented in Volume II. Statistical distributions of mining family characteristics, data on 95 miners killed in underground accidents, and other basic data used to develop the model are presented in Volume III. Application of the model to a data base of 9,286 accidents which occured in underground bituminous coal mines during 1974 yielded a total of $56,900,000 in tangible costs to industry, mining families, and public agencies. Loss of income to the families of miners injured or killed in these accidents accounted for 47 percent of the total.

An integrated mine system must be capable of displaying and reporting valuable information that can be used to easily understand, manage and take action on the key parameters being reported.One of the key aspects of integration is the standardisation of the mine information up to a level capable of adapting the main characteristics of past projects at the mine and enforcing the same or higher standards for newer projects being developed.At the El Teniente mine, photogrammetry is used to map the advance of horizontal developments, and the constructed 3D representation of each face is then used by the geologists to obtain structural information about the areas being photographed.The mine realised that valuable mining information could also be extracted from the photogrammetry being applied, with three possible areas of development envisioned.The first area was creating a link between the developments being planned on a yearly and monthly basis and matching them with plan sections of the 3D developments of the system to account for any deviations.The second area was to use vertical sections of the 3D developments to estimate the overbreak of the excavations in different areas of the mine.The third area was the provision of a more detailed analysis of the sections so that they could provide information on the thickness of the shotcrete being applied.This paper presents the different alternatives being used and examines how the project is currently being developed and managed at the mine. Comminution is a vital part of minerals extraction, and therefore of the South African economy. The high cost and throughput-limiting nature of comminution forms a strong motivation for research directed at improving the efficiency of the process. Building on a ten year background of fundamental charge motion research, a new formal UCT flotation and communication group has been formed. The group is also moving strongly into the field of milling circuit modelling and simulation, based on close links formed with the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) of Australia, and an international collaborative research programme.

This is one of a series of pacers being published by the United States Bureau of Mines, describing mining and milling methods at crushed-stone plants throughout the United States. These pacers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Although the publication of total production cost might not be advisable in some instances, yet a knowledge of operating costs is essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called o this differentiation in order that there will be no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations. This paper deals with the quarrying and crushing methods used at the Plainville plant of the New Haven Trap Rock Co., which produces annually between 275,000 and 300,000 tons of trap rock, Although pct the largest quarry operated by the company, it typifies the standard methods used by all the quarries in producing crushed stone and has one or two rather unique operating features. The cost of production at this plant is close to the average cost at all quarries of the company.
