The production and dispersion of metal nanoclusters onto inorganic supports and amorphous carbon rest on well consolidated technologies belonging to the realm of industrial catalysis and of basic catalysis research (1). In spite of the existence of a variety of specific synthetic strategies, their very rationale relies on three main approaches i. e.: A: precursors of both the metal nanoparticles and of the relevant supports (or the support itself) are intimately mixed (even let to react) at ambient conditions and then thermo-reduced according to very controlled protocols (2); B: precursors of metal nanoclusters are let to be adsorbed onto suitable supports from the gas or liquid phase and subsequently thermally decomposed (3); C: metastable size-controlled metal nanoclusters are previously generated in a liquid medium and subsequently transferred onto pre-formed support particles (4). The production and dispersion of metal nanoclusters onto organic soluble supports is also a rather well documented academic praxis (5, 6, 7, 8) able to provide e.g. size-controlled Au0 nanoclusters of 4.4±1.7 nm (5). Our group started in 1997 developing (9) an innovative approach to the synthesis of metal nanoclusters dispersed inside insoluble, albeit accessible (see below) mechanically robust gel-type resins (10), which procedure was tested so far on palladium metal. Metal ions are previously dispersed upon ion-exchange inside of the polymer framework, followed by chemical reduction and by the aggregation of born metal atoms into nanoclusters, the size of which is templated (11, 12) by the three-dimensional intercommunicating meshes that build up the overall polymer framework (Figure 1).

New mechanical and pneumatic-mechanical flotation machines with axial impellers have been developed. Industrial tests show that these machines ensure lower power expenditure (on flotation) by 1.5-2.0 times as compared with reference machines (with the same or improved technological indices). Application of the newly developed axial impeller, with these advantages, is possible in any volume chambers of type OK, Dorr-Oliver, Wemko etc.

Significant amounts of lateral load may act on pile foundations supporting structures such as transmission line towers, tall structures, bridge abutments, offshore platforms, quay wails, harbour structures and anchorages for water front structures. There were several theoretical and experimental studies conducted on laterally loaded piles in clays to determine ultimate lateral capacity and deflections under working loads. Under a lateral load, a pile deflects in the direction of load application and the soil in front of the pile offers resistance to this movement. The ultimate lateral resistance of a pile can be estimated considering the statics of the pile for a known distribution of soil resistance with depth. In this paper, considering the contributions from both lateral shear drag and frontal passive earth pressure, a method has been proposed to estimate the ultimate lateral capacity of rigid piles in clays. The lateral shear drag has been estimated in terms of adhesion and shape factor. A few load tests were conducted on model piles subjected to lateral loading and these experimental values are used in verifying the proposed method. The reported results obtained from both model tests and field tests were used in support of the predictions made. In all the cases, there is a good agreement between the predicted and measured capacities.

Over the last one hundred years the problem of assessing the efficiency of energy consumption in producing rock breakage has been studied by many investigators from a variety of viewpoints. Their contributions fall into three main categories: (1) those characterized by a priori assumptions of a relation between the energy required for fracture and the degree of fragmentation produced (e.g. Rittinged(l), Kick(2) Bond(3)); (2) those studying simple systems with controlled energy applications (Gross(4)?(5) ); (3) those treating operating data to develop practical relative measures of efficiency (Coghill(6), Taggart(7)). Closely involved in the efficiency problem is the characterization of size distributions produced by comminution. Unless an experimental size distribution can be approximated by a distribution function and its constants, it becomes difficult if not impossible to develop quantitative energy-particle size relationships. While many such functions have been proposed, none are both completely adequate and convenient. The simpler fonns usually describe only a part of the sizing data, while those which apply to a greater extent are cumbersome(8). The thesis underlying the study here reported can be stated as follows: Size reduction in a tumbling mill subjects ore particles to a relatively constant fracture-producing environment. The intensity of the forces is determined by such factors as the mass of the breaking bodies (rods, balls, rock), and the speed and dimensions of the shell. For a particular ore the extent of size reduction will depend both on the intensity and on the duration of exposure. The latter is the residence time in a batch mill, or is determined by the effective volume and the flow rate in a continuous mill. Size reduction can thus be regarded as a rate process in which the weight of material in size intervals varies as a function of grinding time. In heavy mineral sands ilmenite, rutile and zircon are present in economic concentrations. These minerals are important sources of Fe, Ti and Zr for various industrial uses. The beach sands of northern KwaZulu-Natal, along the Zululand Indian Ocean coastline in South Africa, have been mined for 30 years. The various processes involved in mining and processing these minerals have been controlled by time-consuming and labour-intensive analysis methods which, in some cases, can be replaced by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD)-Rietveld analysis. Heavy minerals are concentrated in the plant to produce a heavy mineral concentrate (HMC). The heavy mineral extraction plant is controlled and informed of the proportions of minerals in the HMC according to their magnetic susceptibility. The different fractions are called magnetic, paramagnetic and non-magnetic fractions and quality control is based on their magnetic fraction weights combined with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental analysis. This current quality control process is very time consuming and labour intensive. We have aimed to show that we can, by XRD, identify and quantify all the minerals in the HMC and also in the magnetic separations. These results are then compared with results obtained by Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) as well as with the results from the physical separation. It was possible to detect all minerals present in the material by XRD and use the Rietveld method for a full bulk mineral quantification. A maximum of 15 minerals can be included in the Rietveld refinement due to computational restraints. Major minerals detected are rutile, ilmenite and zircon and minor minerals are quartz, epidote, anatase, amphibole, monazite, magnetite, titanite and augite. The XRD and MLA results correlate relatively well and detailed results will be presented for HMC and magnetic fraction samples. Small differences were observed for some minerals due to the different ways in which minerals are detected or due to preparation methods within each method. Rutile seems to be more abundant in the XRD analysis and the detection of Anatase is possible by XRD, but not MLA. Leucoxene (consisting of mainly microcrystalline anatase, rutile and titanite is not detectable by XRD since it is not a mineral, but ilmenite alteration phases are observed instead. There is, however, a correlation between anatase, titanite and rutile detected by XRD and leucoxene analysed by MLA.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated residues from aluminum plants, to determine if carbon could be removed by flotation while recovering fluorine and aluminum compounds for recycling to the reduction process. This publication summarizes studies on samples representing three types of plant waste products, supplied by three aluminum-producing companies. Samples of flue dust, pot skimmings, and pot linings from the various plants all responded to a simple turpentine flotation scheme to reject 90 to 97 percent of the carbon. Aluminum compound recoveries ranged from 42 to 94 percent on the flue dust, were about 95 percent on the pot skimmings, and ranged from 75 to 89 percent on the pot linings. Fluorine recoveries from the same samples ranged from 35 to 63, 92 to 95, and 77 to 86 percent, respectively. The pot linings contained soluble salts of aluminum and fluorine which were recovered by precipitation with sodium aluminate and carbon dioxide gas. Composites of residues from each plant responded to flotation much the same as the individual samples. Aluminum is produced by the electrolysis of alumina in a molten cryolite bath. The electrolytic reduction cell consists of a carbon-lined box containing a pad of molten aluminum which serves as a cathode, a carbon anode, and an electrolyte of molten cryolite in which the alumina is dissolved. Alumina is reduced to aluminum at the cathode, and carbon is oxidized at the anode.

Magnetic metals are the granddaddy of products which may be recovered from municipal waste. Aside from hand-picking of newsprint and corrugated boxes, magnetic metals are usually the first items a resource recovery facility considers extracting from the solid waste stream. Magnetic metals from incinerator residues and from municipally mandated source segregation programs were first used in significant quantities by the Copper Industry. The ability of the Copper Industry to consume metals from the municipal solid waste stream raised everyone's hopes that there would be more markets for municipal scrap when more of it became available. Somehow something has gone wrong. It is widely acclaimed that scrap is an environmentally sound and economical source of iron. It is greatly in demand for Its contained energy. The prices that the steel industry has been willing to pay for the scrap during the past year are all the proof anyone should need that scrap Is desirable and sought after. But the very fact that I'm speaking today on the markets for magnetic metals recovered from municipal waste indicates that something Is wrong. Clearly the problem is not that we do not need the scrap. The problem is we have not produced the kind of scrap that consumers are willing to buy - either through ignorance of what the consumers wanted or through a conviction that ferrous scrap is so obviously a good thing somebody will surely want it no matter what. Dr. Harvey Alter of the National Center for Resource Recovery has said "You can't sell garbage". In a sense that is only partly true. It really should be "You can't sell garbage for very long". The Steel Companies, in an effort to prove that steel is an environmentally desirable packaging medium, have bought some scrap that can only be described as garbage. They are to be commended for doing so. The fault lies not with the Steel Company for taking and paying for "garbage" but with the producer of that poorly prepared scrap. Far every instance where the steel industry has purchased the often undesirable product from resource recovery facility there are several magnetic installations sitting Idle because someone forgot the most essential part of producing the magnetic product - selling it to someone.

In the Integrated IT Systems proposed by Przedsie? biorstwo Robót Geologiczno-Wiertniczych—Geological and Drilling Company (PRGW) a network connects a database with all of the departments of a mining division. A key element thereof is the common graphics environment—Micro Station supplied by the firm, Bentley. PRGW’s SoftMine software and GMSI’s CadsMine that are used to design and schedule mining operate in this environment. The digital form of the design project facilitates the verification of information and the integration of technical solutions with SAP R/3 type financial—accounting systems. The system has been successfully implemented in the Brown Coal Mine in Poland.

Paper presented at the MEP '89 conference held in Madrid, 13-15 November 1989. Britain has sustained an important metalliferous mining industry over many centuries. Recently, new geological concepts and exploration techniques have indicated that there is considerable potential for the discovery of a variety of deposit styles, often in previously neglected areas. The recent discoveries at Aberfeldy (Ba-Zn-Pb), Gairloch (Cu-Zn) and Cononish (Au-Ag)in Scotland and Curraghinalt (Au-Ag) and Lack (Au-Ag-Pb) in Northern Ireland are illustrations of this potential. Some of the prospective areas for future exploration are described and an indication is given of the legislative framework within which mineral exploration and development are carried out

Potassium ferrate is an excellent multifunctional reagent for wastewater treatment, but its preparation is crucial. The improved hypochlorite oxidation method was used to prepare potassium ferrate in this study. Iron nitrate, the preferred iron source, was added into hypochlorite solution and then the stabilization agent was added during the purification process of product. The influence of available chlorine content, iron molecular proportion, reaction temperature and reaction time on potassium ferrate preparation was investigated. The optimal condition for potassium ferrate preparation is 15% of available chlorine content , 0.6 of iron molecular proportion , 30i of reaction temperature , 45min of reaction time. The yield of potassium ferrate is about 67% with high purity (> 99%). The structure and performances of the product was characterized by XRD, EDX, SEM, TG and IR and the results show that the prepared product is consistent with the properties of potassium ferrate(VI).

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report reviews major developments in continuous haulage technology for underground coal mines. Haulage systems, both in use and under development, were investigated through a comprehensive literature search and visits to mines and manufacturers. The systems include flexible conveyor train, mobile conveyor, monorail bridge conveyor, multiple-unit continuous haulage, extensible, and belt turning systems. Strengths and weaknesses of the systems are assessed in light of their operating under remote control and their application to the computer-assisted continuous mining machine research being conducted by the Bureau. Through mining scenarios, candidate haulage systems are conceptualized to be consistent with the capabilities of the mining machine.

Vitrinite reflectance forms the basis of a study of coal rank variation in two areas of the Upper Hunter Valley, New South Wales, on the northern margin of the Sydney Basin. A selective analysis procedure, based on samples rom twenty-two boreholes, has resulted in a small range of reflectance values for each sample and consequently a high degree of significance for calculated mean values. The patterns of rank distribution derived from these data have facilitated an interpretation of the rclative timing of coalilication and deformation in each area.This study provides support for the suggestion by several authors that there were at least two periods of folding in the tJpper Hunter Valley. In the Hebden-Ravensworth area, minor folding took place after most of the coalilication was completed.To the west, in the region of the Muswellbrook Anticline, coalification occurred during or after the formation of this major structure. Tectonic instability during deposition of the Singleton Super-Group, in the region of the Hunter-Thrust on the basin margin, is evidenced by rank variation suggesting differential subsidence across this zone.

The total drill and blast concept is widely known in the mining industry. On the contrary, the quarry industry rarely adopts such working methods. Based on the experience of the CBS quarry in the North of France, this paper shows how up-to-date blasting technology and simple control methods can significantly improve the overall Mine to Mill efficiency of a quarry. The CBS quarry, in partnership with the EPC group and Nitro- Bickford Company, adopted a new working process three years ago aimed at increasing blast performance and related productivity of the downstream process (loading, hauling and crushing). The pattern geometry of each blast is controlled and explosive charging is carried out following the æconstant specific energyÆ CSE concept. This method provides a homogeneous fragmentation distribution and reduces vibration peak-particle-velocities. The impact on downstream productivity is controlled by means of a simple information management system, which collects and measures key parameters of the production process such as; hauling cycles, crusher throughput, secondary breaking and vibration peak particle velocity. This information system has clearly proved over time that consistent blast quality could be achieved, leading to a 30 per cent improvement in quarry productivity. Improved energy control of blasting through optimisation with electronic detonators, allowed a significant reduction in vibration impact on the environment. Improvement in blasting security, reduction in the environmental impact and productivity enhancement are major benefits that quarries can obtain from these CSE optimisation blasting methods.

PRICE changes in competing fuels in the last three decades have reflected the changes in the consuming habits of the people of the United States. Prior to World War 11 the importance of fuel oil and fuel gas increased almost constantly while the relative importance of both bituminous and anthracite coal decreased. During this same prewar period coal prices increased to a much greater extent than oil prices. In fact, in many years, oil prices declined and in most cases are now no higher than they were back in 1925-26. During the war natural economic trends were entirely upset because of the tremendous petroleum requirements of the Army and Navy. Under these conditions many industrial plants were converted to the use of coal and the new installations in home heating and industrial plants of all kinds which might have used oil were practically eliminated. "In 1974, Copperfields Mining Corporation and Soquem formed a new company, Niobec Inc, to bring the niobium deposit of the St-Honore carbonatite into production.St-Honore is located in the Saguenay area, near the cities of Chicoutimi and Arvida, and about one hundred and forty (140) miles north of Quebec. The discovery of the carbonatite complex was made in the fall of 1967 as a result of an airborne radiometric survey in search of uranium. The detailed exploration of the carbonatite indicated two niobium-bearing formations besides the original discovery of a rare earths zone. During the following years, the niobium formations were defined by diamond drilling and a decline was driven down to obtain adequate samples for metallurgical evaluation. In 1974, after seven hundred (700) bench scale tests, eleven (11) months of pilot plant 2nd a worldwide market research, a joint decision was made to initiate the development of a fifteen hundred (1500) T.P.D. mine and mill, under the management of Teck Corporation. The construction of the facilities were completed in early 1976 both on time and within budget. Niobec is now the only north american and the world second largest producer of Niobium concentrate.The process used at Niobec was developed from the pilot plant programs and later modified by the mill personnel. A simplified flowsheet for this process is shown on the slide. Briefly, run of mine ore is crushed to minus 5/8"" and fed to a rod mill, ball mill, and screens circuit where the ore is ground to 92% passing 65 mesh. The ore is deslimed in two stages of cycloning, and the final cyclone overflow at 85% minus 11 microns goes to waste. The cyclone underflow is conditioned prior to flotation of a carbonate-apatite concentrate. This concentrate is cleaned twice and then pumped to tails. The carbonate rougher and cleaner tails are cycloned in two stages to change the process; water and then sent to the pyrochlore rougher flotation. The rougher concentrate is cleaned five times. This is followed by pyrite flotation to remove sulfur, leaching with hydrochloric acid to remove phosphorus and dyed to less than 0.1% moisture before being sent to packaging."

Virginia-Carolina Chemical Corp., in its Florida Operations, uses both roller mills and ball mills in dry grinding of phosphate rock. The roller mills have been in operation since 1954 in the Mining Department. The ball mills were installed and put in operation in 1960 in the Harding Concentrate Superphosphate Plant. The roller mills in the Mining Department are used to grind phosphate rock for outside customers. This involves short notice orders of varying grinds, grades and types of rock. The ball mills grind phosphate rock for use in V-C's own phosphoric acid and concentrated superphosphate plant. These mills grind generally two types of rock for one grind. In 1959, a 10% speed-up was made in the operating speed of the roller mills. This paper deals with the operational gains and resulting cost savings which evolved from this speed-up, and compares the present operations of the roller mills and of the ball mills in grinding phosphate rock. In January 1959 it was decided to determine the feasibility of reducing the grinding cost on the roller mills, per ton of rock ground, by speeding up the mill 10%. At this time, one mill was completely reconditioned so it would be in top condition. Extensive tests were then run both before and after the mill speed-up to determine the resultant cost savings. These tests showed that, due to this 10% speed-up, the mill capacity was increased approximately 20% and grinding power costs per ton were reduced approximately 10%. Table I shows the results of these tests. Each test run actually represents several of the same type rock and grind, averaged together. Each test run lasted approximately three hours. The validity of these runs has been confirmed by subsequent operation in grinding over 1,000,000 tons of phosphate rock. Accurate records have been kept on power consumption and repairs as well as tons produced. Two types of feed rock were used for the tests — pebble phosphate rock and flotation phosphate concentrate rock. The pebble phosphate rock size is approximately 80-90% plus 20 mesh. The flotation concentrate phosphate rock size is approximately 15% plus 20 mesh and 95% plus 100 mesh. The same two types of rock feed were used for all the test runs. Test Nos. 1, 2, and 3 were run at the original mill speed of 85.5 rpm on the vertical shaft. Test No. 1 was run with a feed of high grade flotation concentrates; the desired fineness attempted was 70% passing 200 mesh. Tests No. 2 and No. 3 were run with a feed of low grade pebble. Test No. 2 was run for a desired fineness of 70% passing 200 mesh. Test No. 3 was run for desired fineness of 50% passing 200 mesh.

In 1998 an initial objective was given to the author, to process valuable off grade High Carbon Ferro Manganese (FeMn) metal fines profitably. The previous attempts that had been made to re-melt these metal fines through the furnaces had resulted in poor furnace operation, mainly to do with lack of electrode penetration and furnace bed permeability. It was decided that the method to resolve these problems was to agglomerate the metal fines. During the study on the agglomeration of the metal fines, a decision was made to use furnace baghouse dust and stockpiled furnace baghouse dust and sludge (DSF) as a ?filler? in the metal fines. The primary reason for using baghouse dust was to eliminate an environmental hazard, whereas the secondary reason for using the DSF was to utilize manganese units contained in the dust. The off-grade metal fines and dust were compacted using a brick press, with cement and aluminum rich plastic clay as a binder, to obtain agglomerate that was cost effective. Through the re-melting of the agglomerated off-grade metal fines, it was realized that this agglomerate concept could have other uses, that of replacing ores on the furnace, at a lower cost. The agglomerate recipe was changed to create an agglomerate that had a high manganese to iron ratio, this replaced Comilog ore on the furnaces, thereby reducing overall furnace unit costs. Future work concerning agglomeration, is to reduce furnace costs further through agglomerating .0.5mm ultra ore fines and .0.3mm Gloria and Nchwaning sludge. Using this agglomerate replaces a portion of the Gloria and Nchwaning lumpy ore on the furnaces at a lower cost. This would eliminate problematic material that exists at the ASSMANG Manganese mines.

Creation of needed new resources will be accomplished mainly by imaginative and diligent geologic exploration because geologic availability is the key determinant of future mineral supply. Adequate resources of most commodities can be made available for the rest of this century and beyond if they are discovered. Thus conversion of hypothetical and speculative resources into available reserves will provide the principal challenge to earth scientists. Additional problems now compete for our attention. First is a challenge to discover more resources than have been found to date for domestic needs as world-wide demands increase exponentially and as easily found high-grade deposits are rapidly being depleted. New ways to find new types of deposits are required. Second, the United States, a resource importer, increasingly is challenged for access to foreign supplies through stiffening competition and economic or expropriation sanctions. Balancing needs for mineral supply and environmental protection is a third challenge. Geologic explorers must consider statutory as well as economic and technologic requirements, controlled access to public and private lands, competition with urban sprawl or wilderness, limitations on discovery, appraisal and mining methods, and restoration of mined areas. Finally, is the challenge to temper public and private attitudes and assure that decisions bearing on resource problems are based on comprehensive credible facts. While striving to maintain and improve the standard of living, many Americans appear to disdain and mistrust those organizations that provide their material where-withal. Meeting these challenges effectively, and in time, will require careful appraisal of the resource system and the joint efforts of industry, university, and government earth science research.
