The Corridor ore body is so named because it occurs in an east-west zone or corridor of schist bounded on the north by the siliceous conglomerates of Mount Lyell, and on the south by similar conglomerates of the Tharsis ridge (Fig. 1). It was discovered after the geophysical prospecting methods described below had defined a target zone for diamond drilling.Since the proving of copper mineralisation by drilling, the corridor orebody has served the vital function of a convenient known target body for the orientation of more recently developed geophysical methods. Traversing of the orebody by these new methods has provided experience for the evaluation of anomalies elsewhere.Some of the methods applied had not been used in Australia before, and were introduced to the west coast of Tasmania through the undertaking there of modern regional exploration programmes. The authors feel that the information gained could be of assistance to others engaged in geophysical prospecting.HISTORY OF DISCOVERYProspecting in the Mount Lyell district has been more or less continuous since 1881. Physical, mineralogical and geochemical characterization, along with some beneficiation approach to pre-concentrate the Ni content of the chromite overburden material of the Sukinda Valley, India, have been carried out in detail. Mineralogically, the overburden consists of geothite, quartz, hematite, magnetite and secondary silicates in varying proportions. A specific Ni mineral phase is absent in this material with the Ni and Fe being mostly enriched in finer fractions. Distribution of Ni and Fe in various size fractions and increase of Ni with increase in Fe (goethite content) indicate that goethite is the major Ni-bearing mineral phase. Quantitative estimation of goethite from chemical analysis and weight loss data indicates that the goethite quantity varies from 40% to 90%. Electron microprobe analysis (EPMA) indicates that Nirich and Ni-poor goethite are present in the overburden material. A sequential dissolution study indicates that more than 50% of the Ni are present within the goethite lattice as a lattice substitution. The results of pre-concentration studies (size classification, gravity, flotation and magnetic separation) indicate that Ni is richer in finer fractions. Further, the enrichment of Ni content is limited to 1.1% with 50% recovery by classification followed by hydrocyclone separation of the below 53 m m fraction.

Longwall face-to-face equipment transfers or moves are, for many companies, the largest single source of non-productive time in a longwall mining system. Detailed planning and resourceful thinking are paramount for economical, safe, and timely longwall moves. New equipment and innovative techniques are frequently tested in order to reduce overall move time. Determining the cost effectiveness of these ideas is difficult since the decision is influenced by many subjective factors. A project scheduling simulation model of the longwall move process was developed in order to analyze and assess the economic viability of innovative transfer methods and equipment. The model provides a project duration frequency distribution and lists of critically indexed activities and paths. It compares the monetary savings from reduced transfer time and capital costs for several innovative ideas.

SEVERAL serious accidents, which had occurred owing to the platman leaving the plat without first withdrawing the "chairs" from the shaft, set the writer scheming to devise a mechanically operated system which would obviate such accidents and be "fool-proof". It was obvious at the outset that some means of indicating to the engine-driver by the movement of the "chairs" themselves, whether they were "in" or "out" of the shaft, was necessary.An arrangement of signalling similar to railway semaphores was considered, but was rejected owing to the difficulties accruing from the large number of communicating wires which would be required down the shaft-viz., 2 for each level. After several experiments, a comparatively simple and efficient electrical system was devised, and which is covered by Commonwealth Patent TO. 10,402.One of the chief features of the apparatus is its simplicity, and its strongest point is the fact that both the engine-driver and platman receive visual indication of the position of the "chairs." The arrangement consists of a miniature coloured glow lamp, one for each level of each shaft compartment, arranged and placed beside the numbers and arrows corresponding to the various levels, on the winding engine indicators. Revegetation success on surface mined lands is dependent upon the nature of the plant growth media. Soil physical and chemical properties dictate the needs for specific reclamation and subsequent management practices. Field experiments were conducted at six coal mine sites in Oliver and Mercer Counties, North Dakota to determine the subsequent effects of a single application of selected amendments on spoil and topsoils over the five year period, 1974-1978. Considerable variations in the physical and chemical properties were found in mine spoils from site to site. The texture of spoils ranged from sandy clay loamy at North Beulah I to loamy at Glenharold, and from sandy loamy at North Beulah 3 and South Beulah sites to loamy sands at the Center site. The pH of the sites ranged from 6.5 at South Beulah to 8.2 at North Beulah 3. In many cases, the pH values of mine spoils were not significantly different from the topsoils. The electrical conductivity (ECe) did not exceed 6 mmhos cm-1 at the test sites even though in other studies much higher values were recorded in the same vicinity. The spoils from Glenharold and North Beulah test sites can be classed as moderately saline, and those from Center and South Beulah as non-saline. The sodium adsorption ratios (SAR) varied from less than 1 to 32, with highest values in the spoils of North Beulah 3 followed by Glenharold; all other sites were nonsodic. Lowest SAR values (less than 1) were found in the topsoiled sites at South Beulah and Center. Spoils of North Beulah 3 test site were highly calcareous, followed by North Beulah 2 and Glenharold. Center mine spoils which were the least calcareous of the test sites, showed the calcium carbonate equivalent three times higher than that of the topsoil. The average calcium concentrations in the spoils of North Beulah 3 and South Beulah test sites were -13 and 14 me 100g -l while at North Beulah 2 and Glenharold test sites 25 and 22 me 100-1-1 were recorded, respectively. The overall magnesium concentrations ranged from an average of 4 to 16 me 100g 1. Sodium concentrations in all sites never exceeded 10 me 100g-1. Phosphorus concentrations on the average at North Beulah 1, North Beulah 2, and Center were 10.2, 4.6, and 22.2 µg g -1 spoil, respectively. Concentrations of potassium ranged from 200 ppm at South Beulah site to more than 375 pp in at the Glenharold site. High concentrations of sulfates (239-2778 µg g-1) seem to contribute to the salinity in these spoils. Chloride concentrations of spoils were low and never exceeded 40 µg g-1 spoil. Based on established critical levels of deficiency for micronutrients in agricultural soils, it seems that none of these were deficient. However, controlled environment experiments did reveal increased plant growth responses when some micronutrients were added to the mine spoils. Treatment effects were highly site specific depending on the nature of the soil/spoil characteristics and, of course, the properties of the various treatments. While slack coal amendment to the spoils at North Beulah 2 site affected significant increases in a large number of variables (both major and trace elements), amendment of the topsoils at the South Beulah test site with leonardite resulted in significant decreases in a number of variables, particularly trace elements. Spoils at Glenharold and North Beulah 3 demonstrated the fewest significant changes due to amendments. Calcium, magnesium, strontium, organic matter and nitrogen were consistently increased from site to site with the addition of lignitic materials. Other spoil/topsoil physical and chemical properties (30 variables) as affected by amendments and time are discussed.

South Africa?s Mining Industry operates in an uncertain world. The industry is buffeted by problems regarding retrenchments, unemployment, low productivity, rising costs, volatile exchange rates, commodity prices and government regulations. With these uncertainties facing the decision makers, what does applied technology offer the industry?s management? Modelling languages with risk analysis have been available for decades, but in the past their use has been very expensive, requiring large mainframe computers and lots of computer time. Today, PCs and laptops have incredible power, which makes interactive risk analysis affordable and viable for all enterprises, whether small or large. ?What is risk analysis? ?What is Monte Carlo simulation? ?What kinds of computer models need to be created to use risk analysis and Monte Carlo simulation effectively? This paper addresses these questions and illustrates, with a practical example in the mining industry, how risk analysis techniques can be used to support decisions in the climate of uncertainty.

WHEN we consider the efforts made in Europe to promote the physical and moral well-being of the working classes, the question is suggested whether in this country, where, theoretically, every man is peculiarly the arbiter of his own destiny, we may not be too prone to expect every man to take care of himself, and neglect to make those provisions for the welfare of the employed, demanded alike by enlightened economy and humanity. In the older countries, where the disproportion between capital and labor is greater, and the working classes are more dependent, their welfare largely occupies the attention of employers. The subject is involved in the problem of the just relations of capital and labor, and we are rapidly approaching the time, if we have not already reached it, when a generous paternal interest in the welfare of the employed should be more generally manifested. It is a subject which is of special importance to mine-owners and engineers in this country, especially to those located in the coal regions. My own attention has been particularly directed to it by a visit made to the Hassard collieries, a few miles from Liege, Belgium, under the direction of M. Andrimont. This celebrated engineer has established a comfortable home for the miners near the mouth of the shaft of the mine. It has been highly successful and beneficent in its results, and may to a great degree be regarded as a, model for such undertakings. It is known as "Hotel Louise," this being the name of Madame d'Andrimont, who laid the corner-stone of the building April 4th, 1871. The structure is of brick, upon three sides of a square, and

Mr Vegter has analysed, in some depth, the approximations made in the treatment of the kinetic data presented in the original by ourselves (ref.1) and has come to the conclusion that ?under the experimental conditions used by Adams and Nicol (1986) the steady-state assumption was inaccurate?. We are acutely aware of the fact that the experimental method adopted does not permit the attainment of a true steady-state in the elution reactor. However, this does not eliminate the attainment of a pseudo steady-state by a suitable choice of the experimental parameters with the accompanying simplification of the analysis of the data with the aim of drawing the reader?s attention to the most important objective of the paper viz. the effect of various operating parameters on the rate of elution of gold.

FOR many years the disk-type and cloth-covered drum filters have found widest application in liquid-solids separation, which uses continuous filters. The disk type is less expensive, occupies less floor space per square foot of filtration area, and requires negligible down time for filter media changing. However, because filter cloth is billowed out by the blowback in the cake discharge, it is very short-lived if the scraper blades are set too close. Consequently cake weight is very important in assisting cake discharge, which normally necessitates a minimum cake thickness of 3/8 to ½ in. Also, the vertical position of the disks eliminates the possibility of efficient cake washing for removal of soluble values. The disk-type filter is generally limited, therefore, to applications that require no cake washing and form relatively thick cakes within the normal range of filter cycle times. The conventional cloth-covered drum filter is a more flexible unit, permitting wider variation in the percentage of cycle time devoted to cake formation, dewatering, or washing, as required by the application. Thinner filter cakes can be discharged because a horizontal line across the filter medium at the location of the scraper blade is equidistant from the edge of the blade at all points. The scraper blade therefore may be set a short distance from the filter medium or, where wire winding is not used, a floating scraper can be utilized so that the contour of the cloth can be followed. The drum filter is generally employed when there are difficult filtering slurries with resultant thin cakes or when cake washing to recover soluble values must be practiced. Difficulties sometimes encountered in continuous filter operation can be summarized in the following four categories: 1) Low filtration and/or washing rates due to blinding of the filter medium. 2) Poor cake discharge resulting from sticky cakes, filter medium blinding, or too thin a cake for the particular type of filter. 3) High filter media costs caused by short life and frequent down times for cloth changing. This results from blinding or from abrasion by the scraper blade when cakes are thin. 4) Blowback of filtrate at cake discharge because not enough air passes through the cake to purge the drainage area and filtrate lines during dewatering. To reduce or eliminate blinding tendencies several modifications have been tried, for example, cover-cleaning showers, blowback under the feed slurry, and snap-blow cake discharge. In many cases, however, this simply retards the rate of blinding, since the filter medium is kept clean at its outer surface only by these methods. As blinding usually occurs within or on the back of the medium, the operator is finally forced either to remove the cloth and scrub the medium intensively with a cleaning solution or acid-rinse it on the filter—all resulting in down time, short cloth life, and additional costs.

De otro lado, se ha desarrollado un modelo de la evolución del yacimiento desde las rocas preminerales del Grupo Toquepala, de las cuales la andesita basáltica fue una gran receptora de la mineralización de cobre originada por la intrusión de un primer pulso de latita porfirítica.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The Self-directed work team concept is the product of relentless performance pressure on American industries during the late eighties and early nineties from other world industrial leaders like Japan. The concept proved to be a successful vehicle by which the Americans could increase their production and improve their safety statistics. The aim of this study is to evaluate the concept as a means to improve the overall performance on South African goldmines. he study is directed by a historical research section, answering questions like: ?Why do we need to change? ?What is a Self-directed work team? ?What are the principle advantages of the concept? ?What are the essential requirements for the concept to succeed? The study also includes an empirical research section that focuses on the current Self-directed work team situation in the South African gold mining industry. The empirical research section is limited to three case studies within Anglogold due to a study period of only six weeks. The mines chosen for the case studies have been labelled Mine 1, Mine 2 and Mine 3. The latter being the base mine allowing for a more in depth study. This includes a perception analysis towards Self-directed work teams within the mine. The study proves the truth of the Latin proverb ?Tempora mutantur, nos et mutamur in illis? meaning ?The times are changing, and we are changing with them?. The chief change catalysts identified are a dwindling gold price and a projected labour crisis. From the study it is evident that the Self-directed work team concept disposes of the critical parameters required for a dramatic improvement in performance. The study also indicates that for the concept to succeed, certain factors like top-level commitment and management-employee trust have to be in place. Sadly, the concluding part of the study proves that very few of the identified critical success parameters are present in the South African gold mining industry. This can serve to explain why the industry only has success with the concept when monetary gain is the chief motivator. The study only focuses on the reasons why the concept is not performing to its full potential and does not wander into explaining the reasons for the current unsupportive milieu in the industry. Self-directed work teams could well rescue the South Africangold mining industry but currently we are driving a square pin into a round hole! Grinding media is a major consumable in mineral processing and therefore decreasing costs associated with its consumption is regularly considered a key goal for the minerals processing industry. Grinding media manufacturers have historically developed steels with improved wear life for their products as a way of delivering incremental media quality improvement. This has included increasing carbon levels from low-to-medium carbon steels up to the eutectoid carbon composition of 0.77% where the relationship between higher carbon and better wear performance is well understood. Producers today will regularly use grades in excess of 0.8% to further improve wear performance particularly for rolled grinding media.This paper first introduces the demonstrated relationship between this increased carbon content and improved wear resistance along with metallurgical rationale behind the high carbon production process and limitations. To test the performance improvement associated with the higher carbon steel grade, a series of Marked Ball Wear Tests (MBWT) were carried out. This paper also explores the relationship between ball properties, test methodology and wear performance and concludes by correlating increased carbon grade with a reduced consumption rate of between 3.1% and 6.1% in the tests conducted.CITATION:Bovell, M, Bose, R and Cheong, G, 2018. The objectives of this study were firstly to characterize and quantify the inorganic material in the Secunda gasification feedstock. Secondly, the effect of washing on coal properties and sulphur content was investigated. Coal from a single source and a coal blend from 6 different mines were tested. Composite samples were visually sorted by a geologist in the groups containing roof, floor, C-shale, pyrite, carbonates and siltstone material. Inorganic mineral types from the single source and coal blends were characterized separately. Characterization results indicate that the average mineral matter distribution (mass %) of the coal tested was as follows: carbonates (6%), carbon-shale (19%), pyrite (12%), roof (18%), floor (46%) and siltstone (22%). The roof, floor, pyrite, carbon-shale, carbonates and siltstone in the single source and coal blend have similar chemical properties and characteristics, except for the ash melting temperatures of pyrite and kaolinite in the siltstone. By implementing selective mining and increasing mining management practices, the percentage discard in the run of mine coal can be significantly reduced, by up to 45%, if the mining of roof and floor material can be avoided. No significant impact of mining practices on sulphur content is expected in this case due to the low concentrations of sulphur in the roof and floor material. In summary, selective mining practices will probably result in almost45% decrease in the discard content in the run of mine to gasification, an increase in the carbon content from 55.0% to 58% (air dry basis) and a decrease in sulphur content from 1.1% to 0.9% (air dry basis). It is clear from this study that the main source of sulphur is not in the high ash-content mineral types (e.g. floor and roof), but in situ in the coal structure. Their purpose is to focus the attention of the coal-mining industry on the most - common source of fatalities and injuries in mining coal and to disseminate information that may be helpful in combating the roof - fall hazard . Following a short review of the history of rails used in the transport of passengers and goods, this paper describes the process for rail fabrication, rail structure, and properties, and summarizes the fatigue test curves carried out on rails used today. Also reported is the process for “continuous rail” production using aluminothermic welding via the introduction of weld metal in onsite casting, as a homogeneous melt. Weld characteristics of aluminothermic welding using different preheating procedures—fusion zone, heat-affected zone, microstructure, hardness, slow bend test, and fatigue test resistance (Wöhler curves)—are related to preheating and welding procedures of 700, 900, and 1,100 MPA rail grades. The Locati method is preferred over the staircase method for ascertaining the fatigue limit due to its simplicity. Macrographic and metallographic inspection of broken specimens reveals the reliability of welding techniques and the good metallurgical quality of welds.

"As demand for copper and precious metals continues to grow, the need to develop new supplies increases. In the imminent future, the new large global ore bodies are more complex, with enargite, tennantite and tetrahedrite as the abundant contained mineralogy. These resources also contain considerable gold and silver. As such, direct treatment by conventional smelting is prohibitive due to the potential environmental impacts and copper quality issues. This paper outlines the effective application and associated economics of industrially proven Alkaline Sulfide Leaching (ASL) hydrometallurgical technology to an enargite concentrate for selective removal and recovery of arsenic, antimony, gold and silver, leaving a clean high-grade copper concentrate. The fundamentals behind the technology are described, along with those of hydrometallurgical arsenic fixation and stabilization. Flowsheets and unit operations are elucidated, along with an in-depth economic analysis. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical methods can be employed for treatment of gold-, arsenic-, antimony-, tin- and mercury-containing materials, concentrates and ores, as well as complex ones containing any number of metals (Conner & Anderson, 2013). The alkaline sulfide leaching (ASL) system is one of these. It is essentially a mixture of sodium sulfide and sodium hydroxide with other meta-stable alkaline species as required. This is a unique hydrometallurgical system beause it is a very selective lixiviant for the distinct leaching of tin, gold, antimony, arsenic, tellurium, silver and mercury (Anderson, 2000, 2001a, 2001b, 2002, 2003, 2012, 2014; Anderson & Twidwell, 2008a, 2008b, 2010; Anderson et al., 2004, 2005; Glazkov & Tseft, 1961; Gnatyshenko & Polyvyanni, 1961; Nadkarni et al., 1975; Nadkarni & Kusik, 1988; Polyvyanni, 1963). Worldwide, ASL technology has been employed industrially in the former CIS, China and the United States for the production of antimony (Anderson et al., 1992, 1994; Anderson & Krys, 1993; Holmes, 1944; Kaloc, 1967; Nordwick & Anderson, 1993; van Stein, 1971)."
