"The Jaguar project is relatively unique in that it was evaluated, financed, built and operated to completion within the last ten years, providing the opportunity to holistically review and reconcile expectations against the actual outcomes. It is a case study that allows wider conclusions to be drawn with respect to the risks and opportunities involved with project evaluation and execution.Jaguar is located in the Leonora Mining District of Western Australia and was commissioned in mid-2007 as an underground accessed, single high-grade volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposit with an on-site concentrator, producing copper and zinc concentrates exported via the Port of Geraldton to South-East Asian markets.The feasibility study (FS) had several iterations (JML, 2005a); the last dated July 2005 was specifically targeted to secure project funding, and summarised the reserves-only portion of the resource and its planned exploitation. The commissioning of the mine was the transition for the owner Jabiru Metals NL from junior explorer to producer and the project was the dominant asset of the company.Jaguar operated through several significant deviations from the linear project plan set out in the FS, including the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), a corporate takeover and disruption to the mine plan from the onset of material geotechnical issues. Whilst the GFC or mining disruption were not specifically predicted in the FS or peer reviews, the generic effects of the events were assessed in the project risk assessment and they influenced subsequent management decisions. In parallel to the internal project-specific risks, the short planned life of Jaguar was a risk to the continuation of the corporate entity which was being addressed by significant investment into brownfields exploration to extend or replicate the project, and ultimately added value such that attracted a corporate takeover.Holistically, the project delivered the returns predicted in the FS, but in a much different guise than was expected. Water represents 80?85% of the volume of mineral pulp processed in flotation circuits. Imperatives for a more detailed focus on circuit water quality and its control have come from increasing requirements to use relatively impure primary water supplies (e.g. high salinity, treated sewage) and high proportions of recycle from tailings dams, thickener overflows, dewatered and filter products. An integrated methodology for examining process water quality and its effect on minerals separation has been developed coupled with minerals surface chemistry across the complete processing circuit. Unrecognised factors, including varying proportions of water streams (daily or hourly), colloidal precipitation, highly variable pH and Eh, reaction and dissolution of minerals, minerals surface layer coatings, residual reagents and their reaction products, and microbiological activity have been studied in eight mineral processing circuits. The methodology combines: solution survey and modelling; microbiological surveys; minerals surface analysis and modelling; and process response. It has been possible to match the predicted (model) pulp chemistry with that measured from surveys of the solution and mineral surfaces. Treatment methods have included: monitored and balanced stream combinations; organic species removal; flocculation and aggregation; induced precipitation; dissolved air flotation; ageing (oxidation, UV exposure); and chemical surface conditioning of minerals. Some specific achievements from the methodology applied in plant and laboratory testing, with examples from case studies, will be described.

Biomineralization of manganese on titanium condenser material exposed to seawater has been illustrated. Biom-ineralization occurs when the fouling components, namely, the microbes, are able to oxidize minerals present in water and deposit them as insoluble oxides on biofilm surfaces. Extensive biofilm characterization studies showed that an alarmingly large number of bacteria in these biofilms are capable of oxidizing manganese and are, thereby, capable of causing biomineralization on the condenser material exposed to seawater. This paper addresses studies on understanding the exact role of the microbes in bringing about oxidation of manganese. The kinetics of manganese oxidation by marine Gram-positive manganese oxidizing bacterium Bacillus spp. that was isolated from the titanium surface was studied in detail. Manganese oxidation in the presence of Bacil-lus cells, by cell free extract (CFE) and heat-treated cell free extract was also studied. The study confirmed that bacteria mediate manganese oxidation and lead to the formation of biogenic oxides of MnO2, eventually leading to biomineralization on titanium surface exposed to seawater.

THE conductivity of copper wire is of prime importance to the electrical industry and consequently to the copper refiner and wire manufacturer. Annealed copper wire has a higher conductivity than hard-drawn wire, but, on the other hand, its tensile strength is lower. In an attempt to explain the reasons for these changes in property or at least to study the conditions existing in these two types of copper wire, the experiments described here were carried on in the Department of Metallurgy of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. This is only a partial and preliminary report on some of the work done to date on a research program of which the object is an intensive study of copper. It is offered with the hope that, though it is not an exposition of the most rigorous of conclusions, the general trend of inferences which may be drawn will be of value and interest.

A testing method for assessing the shear-bond strength of thin spray-on liner (TSL) on rock substrate was developed at Wits University Rock Mechanics Laboratories. The gap between a 20 mm thick steel ring and a rock core is filled with TSL along the depth of the ring. After the curing of the TSL for a predetermined period, the sample is placed on a base, which offers support to the steel ring and the TSL but not to the rock core. A compressive load is applied on the rock core displacing the core on TSL contact and punching it towards the void in the support base. Shear-bond strengths for different TSL products as well as shotcrete were measured. This paper describes the test set-up and points out the important aspects and procedures during sample preparation and test execution. The test results are also presented and discussed.

The separation of certain minerals by electrostatic techniques can be difficult due to their similar electrical conductivity, and any technique to improve this can be useful in certain difficult separation applications. Triboelectric differences between mineral scan result in certain minerals acquiring small positive or negative charges prior to inductive electrostatic separation. By changing the polarity of inductive separation, relative changes in mineral recovery can be observed, which may be beneficial. In this brief study a JKTech mineral liberation analyser (MLA) was used to evaluate the effect of polarity change on selected minerals present in the Richards Bay Minerals deposit, and an approximate triboelectric series based on this behaviour is presented.

THE oxidized ores of the Chief Consolidated Mining Co., in the Tintic mining district, have never yielded to metallurgical treatment by any standard method except smelting. These ores occur in comparatively small, irregular, siliceous replacements in limestone, and carry silver, lead, and gold as the principal valuable metals. But smelting methods. are unsatisfactory, as the lead smelters heavily penalize the large amount of silica in the ore, and the copper smelters do not pay for the lead in the ore; therefore, an alternative treatment method was sought. In 1916, a metallurgical research department was organized under; the direction of the writer. Many standard metallurgical methods were investigated but, on oxidized ore, none yielded extraction great enough to make its use feasible. During some chloridizing-roasting experiments in 1916, made in an assay muffle, the writer noted that large proportions of the silver, lead, and gold were volatilized from certain oxidized ores. The possibility of volatilizing the metals and collecting them in the form of a concentrated fume was then studied. But, as it was shown that satisfactory chloride-volatilization would be limited to a furnace feed with a high fusing temperature of the non-volatilizable constituents, and as the results obtained in a rotary kiln with the admixture of common salt with the ground ore were inferior to muffle tests, further volatilization experiments were discontinued until 1920. During this interval, an experimental sulfidizing and flotation plant was operated. After the cessation of attempts to float the oxidized minerals, chloride-volatilization experiments were resumed. The highly infusible flotation. tailing from the operation of the flotation mill was used for furnace feed. The first tests made on flotation tailing mixed with 10 per cent. common salt showed -nearly complete lead and gold volatilization but considerably less volatilization of silver than in muffle tests. In attempts to increase the silver extraction, the percentage salt in the furnace feed was varied, and it soon became apparent that the use of smaller percentages of salt raised the fusion temperature of the furnace charge and thus,

This paper addresses historical aspects and construction sequencing of the subway complex under Columbus Circle in Manhattan; the structural elements of the rehabilitation and new construction; and the challenges associated with design and construction. PB is providing engineering services to New York City Transit (NYCT) for the rehabilitation of the 59th Street/Columbus Circle Station Complex that services over 150,000 customers daily. The project involves structural repairs, modifications and new construction requiring underpinning and temporary supports, custom framing details, and construction staging procedures to meet stringent limitations within the operating transit station and around the Columbus Circle street intersections.

Utilizing a very large database from a mined-out area on a South African gold mine, the relative efficacy of a method to mitigate the smoothing effect introduced by the algorithmic constraints imposed by kriging was investigated. Smoothing effects arising from limited data availability are differentiated from the smoothing arising from the application of estimation algorithms. Very little can be done to ameliorate smoothing of estimates because of too little data, barring additional drilling or sampling. However, the smoothing effects resulting from the kriging process are shown to be mitigated by use of an alternative algorithm. The primary criterion in the development of the new algorithm was to avoid re-introducing conditional bias. This paper examines firstly the smoothing effects introduced into estimates via the kriging covariance matrix, secondly the process for ameliorating the smoothing effect, and finally it uses a case study to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new algorithm on a very large database. The database was used to introduce a 60 m by 60 m drilling pattern which in turn was used to model the semi-variogram and produce 30 m by 30 m kriged block estimates. The follow-up database was then re-introduced (roughly 5 m by 5 m grid spacing) and averaged into 30 m by 30 m blocks to provide a direct comparison with the initial estimates. In this way the extent of smoothing and accuracy of the estimates before and after the corrections was tested.

"Bubbles are unquestionably the heart of the flotation process. Their size and combined surface area are largely what drive the recovery process. This suggests that plant engineers should be aware of where their plants are operating with respect to what is achievable for these key parameters. The paper presents a model of how the key operating variables of frother type and concentration, gas rate, altitude (above sea level) and viscosity affect the Sauter mean bubble size (D32) and bubble surface area flux (Sb). The results are compared to a set of plant measurements that demonstrate the benchmarking capability of the approach. A case study is used to link hydrodynamic change to improved metallurgical performance.INTRODUCTION At the beginning of the 20th Century the early practitioners of flotation were aware of the importance of understanding bubble behaviour (Rickard, 1916) but measurement of individual bubble and gas behaviour in the industrial environment was not possible due to a lack of adequate sensors. This situation was not rectified until three quarters of a century later with the advent of industrially-robust sensors developed, notably, at the University of Queensland’s Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) (Schwarz & Alexander, 2006) and McGill University (Gomez & Finch, 2002). What emerged was not the chaotic environment perhaps expected, but defined relationships between gas rate, gas holdup, bubble size and the total surface area of bubbles. These relationships could be defined by mathematical expressions and predicted from an understanding of the key process variables (Gorain, Franzidis & Manlapig, 1997; 1999) (Hernandez-Aguilar, Gomez & Finch, 2002) (Gomez, Cortes-Lopez & Finch, 2003) (Nesset, Gomez & Finch, 2007). The early JKMRC work focused on a large pilot cell (3 m3) installed in plant environments, while the McGill work was initiated on flotation columns (Finch & Dobby, 1990) (Xu, Finch & Uribe-Sales, 1991) and later adapted to industrial mechanical cells (Cooper, Scott, Dahlke, Finch & Gomez, 2004) (Dahlke, Gomez & Finch, 2005) (Nesset, Gomez, Finch, Hernandez-Aguilar & Difeo, 2005). Yianatos of Santa Maria University (Chile), a graduate of the McGill research team, carried the work to industrial settings in South and Central America (Yianatos, Bergh, Condori & Aguilera, 2001). The methods of gas dispersion measurement are now well accepted and most major research centres and flotation cell manufacturers have adopted the technology (Pyecha, Sim, Lacouture, Hope & Stradling, 2006) (Yañez et al., 2009) (Collins, Schwarz & Alexander, 2009)."

This report describes work which was done to apply an existing finite element computer program UNSAT2 to the unsteady, unsaturated flow of water through waste shale piles. The work was done in three phases: 1. Verification of program through comparison with existing data. 2. Verification of program through simulation of flow from field seepage ponds at Rifle, Colorado. Considerable laboratory work was done in this phase to obtain capillary pressure-saturation-relative permeability data and hydraulic conductivity values for retorted shale. 3. Application of program to flow due to natural rainfall in a section through the Piceance Basin in Colorado, and a typical waste shale pile.

The Late Paleocene–Middle Eocene phosphate nodules of Solan District of Himachal Pradesh belong to green facies of Subathu Formation of Sirmur group. Field observations indicate sporadic distribution of phosphatic nodules in the yellow brown to rusty brown, buff-colored bleach shales. Phosphatic nodules are dull earthy to dark grayish in color and break with sharp and conchoidal surfaces. Studies of phosphatic nodules using petrological microscope, X-ray diffractometry, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) attached with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) reveal that cryptocrystalline apatite (fluorapatite) is the dominant phosphate mineral. Silt sized silica is the dominant gangue, whereas pyrite and muscovite are present as minor gangue. The phosphate minerals occur as oolites, pellets, and cryptocrystalline apatite in the groundmass. Silica veins form a network replacing the original phosphatic matrix. Brown to brownish black color may be attributed by the organic matter in the phosphatic nodules. Completely phosphatized radiolaria and partially pyritized planktonic foraminifera are observed. There is corroboration of organic matter in the form of microbial filaments in the groundmass of apatite. The findings in the present investigation indicate that the different forms of the minerals, their texture, and distribution in the phosphatic nodules might be due to environmental vicissitudes in oxidizing to reducing conditions followed by replacement processes. Presence of microbial filaments may be due to the active role of microorganisms during the formation of these phosphatic nodules.

The primary objective of this study is to "evaluate the influences of different equipment systems on prime farmland subsoil compaction due to surface mining in the Midwest." The study is centered on four mine sites each utilizing a different combination of equipment for soil removal and replacement. Subsoil compaction is the primary focus of this research effort. Primarily owing to physical location, it is difficult to alleviate the increased compaction directly below the topsoil in reclaimed soils. Different equipment combinations cause varied effects when soils are replaced during surface mining activities. By collecting field data within a statistical framework, the effects of different equipment combinations on subsoil compaction can be evaluated and conclusions drawn. This research effort evaluates a comparison of natural and replaced soils by moist bulk density data. This comparison centers on changes in bulk density and texture to a depth of 48 inches. For each study site a complete case study is provided for use in data correlation and interpretation. Basis for this research effort centers on four (4) major experiment designs: o Comparison of soil bulk density values for three distinct equipment systems evaluated on the same general soil types (i.e. scrapers, bucket-wheel excavators and end-dump haulback); o Evaluation of the effects of soil replacement in repeated lifts using scrapers; o Presentation of bulk density values representing soil compaction for four (4) equipment systems (i.e. bucket-wheel excavators, draglines, scrapers and end-dump haul back) on four separate mine sites in the midwest; o A prediction analysis model is developed for subsoil bulk density following reclamation based on equipment characteristics and a statistical evaluation of texture. The soil data base of information includes data from the 1982 Bureau of Mines study entitled, "Impact of Surface Mining on Soil Compaction in the Midwest" as well as data from this research project. The final report is synthesized through an analysis of field data, statistical analysis and literature review. The final report focuses on the interpretation of results for practical application by government and industry.

Updraft sintering of lead concentrates was introduced at Port Pirie in 1955 and since that time a considerable amount of investigational work has been carried out in the laboratory and on the plant with the objective of improving both the understanding of the process and its practical application.From this work it is now possible to predict trends in design and operation, which should result in capital savings and increased efficiency of future updraught plants.INTRODUCTIONOver the last 70 years a remarkable advance has been made in the method of preparing lead concentrates for smelting in the Port Pide blast furnaces of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (RH.A.S.). Beginning in 1889 with heap roasting, the process progressed to Ropp roasters and Huntington-Heberlein pots in various combinations, then to multiple small Dwight Lloyd (D.L.) downdraught machines. In 1940 two large 10 ft by 50 ft D.L. downdraught machines were installed, and finally in 1955 updraught sintering was ,introduced with the installation of the present 10 ft by 99 ft sinter machine.At the time this last machine was built it was the first unit of its type and thus, of necessity, an experimental machine. During the eight years it has been operating a considerable amount of investigational work on sintering has been carried out both on the plant and in the laboratory.It is now felt that sufficient information is on hand to predict at least tentatively, some of the future developments in lead sintering, whereby both the quality of the sinter and the rate of production may be improved. This will result in a considerable reduction in smelting costs.

The latter half of the 20th century has seen the proliferation of a series of codes to address commodity needs which were brought about by rapidly advancing technologies and the globalization of markets and consumerism. This paper addresses the specific needs and the origin of this surge and presents these codes in the context they were developed. It also compares the main codes or groups of codes and elaborates upon their strengths and weaknesses. Three main categories of codes are identified, namely: codes for reporting to international agencies, codes addressing government needs and, finally, codes for the investors and the stock market. Codes governed by international agencies usually relate to strategic commodities which have highly specialized fields of usage like nuclear power generation where international cooperation is eventually the only viable approach for both the development of technologies and their applications. Codes for reporting to governments address the necessity of each state to exploit their mineral potential profitably and to secure the preservation of wealth for future generations. Reporting to investors is experiencing a considerable popularity as of late because of globalization in mining and the growing need for outside financing of mining projects, whose capital requirements are getting out of reach for the average mid-cap mining company. All these codes have advantages and shortcomings dictated by the specific circumstances under which they were developed, therefore necessitating the definition and implementation of some kind of international standard whereby investments and the spread of information across political boundaries would be facilitated. Though none of these codes might ever become international in the true sense of the word because of significantly different legislations at national level, a step that would greatly contribute to the cross-border disclosure of information would be the reciprocal recognition of competent persons by the major mining countries, including China and Russia. It is also becoming essential that financial institutions and investors be properly advised on mining projects by reporting reserves and resources in a transparent and responsible way with the relevant public disclosures being compiled by professionals who take full responsibility for their submissions. Grade control programs aim to deliver economic tonnes to the mill via accurate definition of ore and waste. The foundation of a successful program is high quality sampling supported by geology and a suitable data management and modelling system. Underground sampling methods include chip, channel and panel samples; grab/muck pile samples; and drill-based samples. Grade control strategy is related to mining method and orebody type. Sampling protocols must be designed to suit the style of mineralisation in question. Holistic studies focussing on ore mineralogy and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required for sample collection and preparation protocol optimisation through ‘Theory of Sampling’ application. Where possible, such programs should be undertaken early in the life of a project. Appropriate assaying procedures are also required. Program implementation will require suitably skilled individuals to train and mentor staff, with ongoing Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) monitoring and review will allow protocols and staff to be updated as required.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, zinc, electrowinning Zincor has been producing zinc since 1969 via the roast-leach-electrowinning process. It is the only primary zinc producer in South Africa, and currently supplies the entire country with zinc. The plant was built by Goldfields of South Africa, on the site of an old gold and uranium mine. Since then, the ownership of the plant has changed a couple of times, and the plant and process have also been improved. Production output has increased from around 80 000 tons per year to more than 110 000 tons per year. This was done mainly through increasing the capacity of the roasters and acid plant. Zincor produces four main grades of zinc: SHG, Zn1, Zn2, and Zn4, in three shapes: a 25 kg ingot and 1 and 2 ton jumbos. In 2005, a pre-alloy furnace was built that enabled the production of jumbos pre-alloyed with aluminium. This has allowed Zincor's customers to improve the efficiency of their continuous galvanizing lines and to lower their production costs.

The Corridor Sands deposits of heavy mineral sands represent the largest known economic resource of titanium dioxide minerals. The West Block of Deposit 1 alone contains Measured and Indicated Mineral Resources of 1.7 billion tonnes containing 4.14 per cent ilmenite, estimated in accordance with the JORC standard, sufficient for at least the first 20 years of mining. Total mineral resources are estimated to be approximately 17 billion tonnes at 5 per cent Total Heavy Minerals (THM). Test work was undertaken on the West Block of Deposit 1 over a period of two years in order to develop the process flow sheet to bankable standards. Geological, mineralogical and metallurgical test work was integrated from a pre-feasibility stage to the full bankable stage. The process flowsheet was developed with the central objective of the production of saleable products, of consistent quality and acceptable to the respective end-markets. The aim of this paper is to describe the way in which the various challenges for the project have been addressed by using integrated geological and mineralogical information, which has resulted in the development of a complete flow sheet. The process confirmed that material within customer specifications could be produced, once various metallurgical parameters were understood. This flow sheet development progressed from laboratory test work through to full field trials at pilot plant scale on large consignments of mineralized material. The flow sheet was developed to such a standard as to be used with confidence for both engineering design and cost estimates, and to determine the recovery factors to be used in financial evaluations. "EPD (Electric Pulse disaggregation) and HS (hydroseparation) are exceptional technologies for research, concentration, evaluation, and mineral extraction of specific minerals such as precious metals (Au, Ag, PGM), kimberlites (extraction and concentration of indicator minerals), zircons and baddeleyite (recovery of objects for geochronology), and even gemstones (method of evaluation and production of the 100% gemstone concentrate of ideal crystals) etc. EPD is used for recovery of pristine undamaged crystals of diamond, emerald, ruby, sapphire etc, including large crystals. It was tested on various hard ores and was especially successful for recovery of “soft” minerals from “hard” matrix. EPD products are very convenient for HS processing, resulting in representative concentrates of all heavy minerals including the finest particles (5-10 µm). The combined EPD and HS method enables high sensitivity (20 ppb) for evaluation of precious metal ores providing objective information about original grain size, associations, and recovery using a very small amount of sample (1-3 kg). Latest developments of EPD and HS techniques at CNT Mineral Consulting Inc. include the HS-21 hydroseparator (50 kg/hr) and the Spark-21 EPD (5 t/hr), which enables use of both techniques for prospecting and mineral processing of industrial size samples of certain ores.INTRODUCTIONThe main task for mineral processors is to find a reliable technology for testing of mining feasibility and the efficiency of mineral extraction procedures. Among various mineral processing approaches of extraction and concentration there are two alternative cost-effective methods that can be described as the most environmentally benign and complementary: electric-pulse disaggregation and hydroseparation. These techniques were tested on many different ore types and process products with great success providing a precise and comprehensive mineralogical determination of different accessory precious metal and other useful minerals constituent in rocks, ores, and tailings.This article describes several examples of EPD and HS use: native gold from the Kostomuksha deposit (Karelia, Russia), a Ag-Au deposit in South America, zircons from ancient ultramafic igneous rocks of SW Greenland, bauxites of West Australia, PGM from the Driekop dunite pipe and gemstones (ruby, sapphire, emerald and demantoid) from different deposits."
