The accompanying supply/demand flow diagrams and 10-year tables for mineral and fuel commodities present essential data required by government, industry, and others to formulate policies and programs that can help assure an adequate and continuing supply of mineral raw materials. The 10-year data base terminates with 1973 figures because adequate world information was not available beyond that date. Moreover, 1974 was an anomalous year with respect to prices, supply, and demand for many commodities. The selected mineral supply/demand tables and flow diagrams comprise but one "output" from the massive body of "information and data collected and com-piled by the Bureau of Mines on a continuing basis covering mineral production consumption, prices, shipments, imports, exports, and stocks, as well as industry activities in all States and abroad.

The ADS system was developed to reduce accidents related to haul trucks operating under low visibility conditions in surface mining and construction sites, which is based on the GPS, mesh-wireless networks, and the Google-Earth 3D graphic engine as the graphic interface and mine-mapping server. This system has the capability to pin-point and track vehicles in real time using a 3D interface, which is based on user-based AutoCAD mine maps using the Google-Earth graphics interface. All equipped vehicles are shown in a 3D mine map stored in a local server through a wireless network. When low visibility conditions are present, the system indicates available exit/escape routes for driver safety. The research results indicate that the ADS system potentially increases reliability and reduces uncertainty in open pit mining operations by customizing the local 3D digital mining map, constructing the truck 3D models, tracking vehicles in real time using a 3D interface and indicating available escape routes for driver safety.

"A kinematically admissible velocity field is applied to study the arching phenomenon in a cohesionless granular backfill placed between two rough vertical inflexible walls. The study is different from the previous works which are almost entirely based on statically admissible stress fields. It is shown that the development of arches is strongly influenced by the previous loading history of the backfill which controls the nature of the constitutive laws that govern the mode of stress deformation of the backfill. This preliminary study employs simple models in order to show the potential use of such an approach in evaluating and understanding mine backfill behaviour in the underground excavation. The pressure exerted on the floor supporting the backfill is also studied in some detail.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the importance of the design of mine backfill has been discussed extensively by a number of authors, i.e. Hassani et al. (1985), such theories have not as yet been incorporated in design criteria for underground mine backfilling operation . One factor that such theories must incorporate is the so-called arching action .The phenomenon of arching has been the subject of study by many researchers in the field of civil engineering and mining engineering. Among these scholars the works of Terzaghi (1943), Krynine (1945), Lusher and Hoeg (1964) and Handy (1985) are noteworthy. All these authors use a statically admissible stress field as a starting point to develop their theories. The approach taken by the authors of the present paper is completely different because they employ a kinematicallyadmissible velocity field. It is their belief that the arching phenomenon is closely linked to the interlocking of grains as manifested by the degree of dilatation of the granular mass when subjected to a shearing process.This paper is written in the following sequence. To define the interlocking quantitatively it is necessary to state the constitutive law governing the stress deformation characateristics of the granular mass. This is done in the next section as the law proposed by Poorooshasb and Pietruszazck (1985, 1986) is stated and simplified to suit the present analysis. Next the mode of formation of an arch in a simple system consisting of a mass of backfill sandwiched between two vertical rough walls of infinite extent is examined. The velocity field obtained from the above example is used to obtain solutions to two more complicated situations. The first situation assumes that the backfill is supported, in addition to the vertical rough walls, by a Winkler foundation at its base. The second situation assumes that the Winkler foundation has been replaced by a horizontal beam of uniform section and simply supported at its extremities. The findings of the study are summarized and their practical implications discussed in the concluding remarks."

The St. Cloud Mining Company extracts clinoptilolite about 6.5 km south of Winston, Sierra County, New Mexico. Production is about 18,000 mt/year. Natural zeolites are good adsorbents for positively charged solutes such as ammonium. St. Cloud’s production is used in animal hygiene, animal feed, environmental mitigation, air and water filtration, and other applications. By a simple chemical treatment with a surfactant, zeolites can also be modified to adsorb negatively charged solutes such as nitrate and arsentate, and neutral organics such as solvents and fuel components. These surfactant-modified zeolites are used in treating groundwater contamination, stormwater runoff, and solvent vapors from painting operations.

North American railroad locomotive operators (engineers and conductors) are exposed to multi-axis vibration and shocks (1, 2). A recent epidemiological survey showed a prevalence of serious type of neck and lower back disorders nearly double that of a control group (3). Ergonomic working conditions are important co-factors in a vibration and shock exposure risk assessment (4, 5). The goal of this study is to illustrate typical work stations (cabs and seats) in US/Canadian type locomotives and assess shock related exposure risk by calculations of the new proposed shock risk indicators according to the new ISO 2631-5 (2004) (6). Methods Locomotive cab and seat inspections were conducted and operators’ activities were assessed by a trained observer. Field measurements (n=50) were obtained during normal revue service following generally accepted guidelines (ISO 2631 (1)). A sub-sample of n=20 locomotives were selected for the calculation of proposed shock indicators (ISO 2631 (5)). Results There has been little change in basic locomotive cab and seat design in the U.S.. Two locomotive cab design concepts are used: the Association of American Railroad (AAR) Control Stand and in newer series wide-body locomotives the “Control Consol” (Figures 1-2), with varying seating conditions, but frequently subjecting the operator to an awkward body posture in addition to the vibration and shock exposure. HE State of Utah has an area of 84,990 sq. mi., and like other inland states in the West its population, although steadily increasing, is relatively small. The fact that it is a state possessing vast mineral resources is attested by a careful study of statistics which have been compiled by Federal and State investigators. Some idea of the extent of these resources and the degree of development of a particular state or region may be gained by such a study, but in the case of Utah statistics and other available information fail to portray completely the true extent and value of its existing metallic and non-metallic resources. The State is probably more widely known for its production of metallic ores which has placed it in an eminent position among the metal mining states of the Nation.

"The purpose of the research is intensification of physico-mechanical ore properties determination for ball grinding processes in comminution circuits. The research presents comparative studies aimed at intensification of Bond Ball Mill Work Index (BWi) determination, such as testing technique of Ahmadi and Shahsavari, Berry and Bruse, Gharehgheshlagh, Horst and Bassarear, Kapur, Magdalinovich. The subject of the research is a test procedure of apatite-nepheline, copper-nickel, gold-sulfide and iron ores for the Bond ball mill index. The Bond Ball Mill Work Index for the material firstly was determined by standard Bond test methodology. Two the most promising testing techniques - Ahmadi and Kapur testing techniques - were modified. For the Ahmadi technique it was proposed to pay attention to the circulating load, which should be stabilized on the value of 250% as fast as possible. Two methods were put forward to quicker stabilize the circulating load. For the Kapur technique it was proposed to use empirical coefficients, which is determined especially for the apatite-nepheline, copper-nickel, gold-sulfide and ores. The modified Ahmadi and Kapur techniques require no more than two cycles of ball grinding to determine BWi (while normally 6-8 cycles are required) and less than 5 kg of initial feed. The suggested modified Ahmadi and Kapur techniques allow to intensify the physico-mechanical ore properties determination for ball grinding processes and BWi test costs considerably, which makes them useful for mass sampling and monitoring strength properties of ores entering a concentrating mill. INTRODUCTION When designing concentrating mills, the choice of the technological scheme for ore pretreatment, particularly the type, quantity and size of the main process environment, the determination of optimal grinding conditions and the calculation of equipment load are carried out by preliminary studies of grinding in semi-industrial or laboratory-scale plants. Semi-industrial tests on full-scale plants provide the most reliable information for calculating specific loads for equipment. However, this requires a significant amount of ore samples, a high labor costs and the pilot plants. Thence the most researchers performed grinding tests with small laboratory equipment using small ore samples."

The standard tool for addressing this question is to use discounted cash flow analysis, or net asset value(NAV), which is discounted cash flow net of liabilities. Cash flow-based analysis is invaluable for assessing project costs and other impacts on debt service capacity and internal rates of return. But cash flow analysis and NAV do not work very well for stock price analysis.

"Abstract In the Press-in Method, a static jacking force is used to install a prefabricated pile, while a reaction force is gained from previously installed piles. This piling technique has solved problems in urban piling construction such as noise and vibration associated with the piling work, restricted construction conditions due to the existing structures, and so on, since its emergence in 1975. Its applicability to hard ground conditions has been improved, with the development of press-in machines that involve augering or rotation. Besides, information such as time, penetration depth, jacking force and rotational (or augering) torque in piling work are automatically obtained. The concept of PPT, Pile Penetration Test, has been developed by the authors, to apply the obtained information to the processes of construction planning or foundation design. This paper highlights the technique to estimate SPT N value from data acquired in standard press-in (press-in without any auxiliary methods), press-in with augering and rotary press-in. The technique will be helpful in assuring the adequate embedment depth, re-selecting the adequate press-in machine or auxiliary method, and re-pricing the project objectively, particularly when a contractor encounters unexpected ground conditions.INTRODUCTIONThe Press-in Method is one of the piling techniques that use a static jacking load to install piles. It mitigates environmental problems of noise and vibration that have been associated with other conventional piling techniques.It is also featured by its spatial efficiency; since a ‘press-in’ piling machine gains a reaction force from the previously installed piles, there is no need of bulky weights that will occupy a large space. This feature is emphasized in the piling system in Figure 1, where a press-in machine and its related devices are all positioned and ‘walk’ on top of the pile wall.Its applicability to hard grounds has significantly been improved, with some newly developed piling machines that involve augering or that install tubular piles with teeth on the base by applying axial load and rotational torque at the same time."

During the latter part of 1937 consideration was given to the construction of a; local smelting plant for producing blister copper. Previously copper concentrates had been shipped to the United States of America. The proposition had the advantages of a saving in cost of realization, quicker financial return and reduced dependence on overseas shipping.The smelter was designed by the existing staff, who had difficulty in obtaining data on small plants, particularly on the reverberatory furnace. Construction was started in March, 1938, and the reverberatory was blown in on January 16th, 1939. One roaster had been operating for several weeks prior to this date.While results and operating technique on this new departure in small-scale smelting are barely beyond the experimental stage, it is felt that the experience gained to this time should be recorded to help fill the obvious gap in published information covering plants of this type.At present there are three copper smelters operating in Australia; the other two plants are equipped with blast furnaces.LOCATIONThe new smelter is situated in a position convenient to the concentrator and to the power plant. The iron ore deposits of the Port Hedland district of North Western Australia are associated with band'ed sedimentary iron formations that form part of the local succession of folded and faulted Archaean volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The iron formations are regarded as the protore beds or sources of the iron which became concentrated by supergene processes to form commercial grade iron ore deposits.Iron oxide deposits occurring in situ within the protore beds are considered to be of residual-replacement origin, due to supergene leaching of gangue minerals and' deposition of secondary iron oxides in their place, Two types of deposit have been recognized. Lode deposits are deep lenses of massive hematite located adjacent to major faults. These deposits are thought to be very old and to have originated by supergene processes during the long period of erosion represented by the major unconformity between the Archaean rocks and the overlying Proterozoic beds. The other type, known as crust ore deposits, are shallow cappings of hematite and goethite on hills formed by the outcrops of steeply dipping protore beds. These deposits could have originated as far back as the early Mesozoic and it is possible that the ore-forming process is continuing at a slow rate at the present day.Deposits formed by erosion and re-deposition of material derived from pre-existing residual-type deposits are known as derived deposits. These include conglomerates and scree accumulations of various types and ages and pisolitic deposits formed by supergene leaching of transported detritus. Derived deposits range in age from early Proterozoic to Recent. Two house trailers and a modem modular house, all pillar-supported with cantilevered perimeters, were monitored for structural response to vibrations from surface coal mine blasts. Due to the large blast site distances, peak particle velocities measured in the ground beside the houses did not exceed 0.32 ips, and airblasts did not exceed 106 dB. However, the structures responded significantly to the ground vibrations, with maximum high-comer amplification factors as high as 8.5 in the horizontal directions. Vertical structural responses were as high as 10 times the vertical peak particle velocities in the ground, but appeared to be driven more by horizontal ground motions. No measurable airblast responses were observed. The natural frequencies of the structures ranged from 5 to 10 Hz.

Introduction To discuss all the technical details of incorporation laws, security laws, underwriting procedures, codes, and ethics-as laid down by varous associations -would be impossible in the time which has been allotted to me. My remarks, therefore, will be made in a very general way and will naturally be coloured with experiences which my firm and I have had. There is a common expression that "money makes the mare go". I hardly have to mention here that the best prospect in the country is of very little value unless its prospects can be developed-and this requires large capital expenditures. The art and problems surrounding the raising of this money is a long and interesting story. Since by its very nature mining is risky, the appraising of its risks in the many phases of its development programme is continuous. Very few men-if any-and very few corporations -if any -can afford to take all the risk of mining. Because of taxation policies-and the very scheme of present-day living -the truth of this statement can be seen throughout the whole industry by a close examination of the records. Since this is so, it is essential that the mechanics of distributing risk on a sound, and equitable basis be known to those engaged in the business and to the investor or spectator who proposes to risk his funds in the industry. Perhaps the greatest stimulant to modern business activities has been the creation of corporate bodies. It is evident, from the number of charters being granted by various jurisdictions, that this method of doing business is becoming more and more important. A limited company -or corporation-can be defined as a fictitious person existing solely in contemplation of the law.

"Sampling is an important step for ore body evaluation and daily plant material balances. The Gy’s equation is regularly used to assess the size of the samples to be collected and to estimate the reproducibility of the collected samples. The equation works well for iron and base metal ores but seems to produce pessimistic estimates of the gold content reproducibility for gold ores. A model is proposed to simulate the division of samples using a standard splitter and discrepancies are observed between the Gy’s equation predictions and simulated samples reproducibility for crushed gold ore. Results of the simulation show that sampling a pile of ore crushed to -2 mm should lead to more reproducible gold content than it is observed in practice and predicted by the Gy’s equation.INTRODUCTION With current gold prices above $1400 per troy ounce operators seek for new economical ore bodies. The metallurgical evaluation of an ore body is one of the numerous steps required to justify the investment for the development of a gold mine. Metallurgical testing requires to sample the ore body and to prepare the ore sample for the grinding and separation tests. The preparation implies crushing the ore usually to less than 2mm and its division into batches of a given weight for subsequent processing. For gold ore testing a batch of crushed ore is ground in a laboratory mill and leached using cyanide. Gold recovered in the solution is used as an indicator of the ore processing amenability. One difficulty associated with ore testing is due to the reproducibility of gold content measurements of the feed sample. According to the Gy’s equation (Gy, 1979; Morisson, 2009) the division of a 20 kg batch of -2 mm ore containing 5 g/t of gold into batches of 1 kg may lead to batches containing 5 ± 5 g/t of gold. For this reason the gold content of a feed sample is usually back calculated from the assays of the solution and solids residues of the leaching process. However, these two assays may contain measurement errors that can propagate through the calculation of the gold recovery. The use of the feed assays as a redundant information could add robustness in the evaluation of ore amenability to processing. This paper discusses the problem of sampling reproducibility for a gold ore. The analysis is carried out with reference to the Gy’s equation for the sampling of particular materials."

The paper describes the construction of 5 plugs to resist high water heads at depth within the South Deep Gold Mine, Randfontein, South Africa. A total of 20 segments were involved to create these plugs, which were 7.5 m long at the 58 Level and 6.25 m long at the50 Level. Emphasis is placed on the QA/QC and verification methods, which were developed and governed all phases of the work, from initial rock preparation and pregrouting through to the final grout tightening of the rock/plug interface and the surrounding rock. This paper is one in a series of papers detailing other aspects of the project, which was constructed largely between May 2001 and August 2003.

Seven configurations for panel entries of a longwall coal mine are compared and ranked according to structural stability. These entry configurations are analyzed using three-dimensional finite element modeling The models include large dimensions to minimize boundary effects, elastoplastic constitutive relations, and simulated excavation and construction of support systems. The stability criteria are formulated in a quantitative manner to facilitate the ranking of the entry configurations. These criteria are based on the expected volume of caved rock in the entry openings. The stability ranking is applied to the entry excavation phase, the headgate phase, and the tailate phase of the entry life cycle. Parametric variations are applied using two-dimensional finite element models to determine the sensitivity to changes in mining and design parameters.

We utilized electronic detonators (EDs) to investigate the effect of high detonator delay accuracy on overbreak, remaining rock damage, and surface smoothness, in comparison with that of long-period delay detonators (0.25 sec interval) PDs. The experiments were conducted in a deep mine, in a test site region composed of very hard granodiorite with a seismic wave velocity of about 6.0 km/see and a uniaxial compressive strength, uniaxial tensile strength, and Young's modulus of 300 MPa, 12 MPa, and 73 GPa, respectively. The blasting design was for a test tunnel excavation 8 m in cross section, with an advance per round of 2.5 m. Five rounds were performed, each with a large-hole cut and perimeter holes in a 0.4-m spacing charged with 20-mm-diameter water gel explosive to obtain low charge concentration. EDs were used in the holes on the perimeter of the right half, and PDs were used in all other holes.

This paper investigates the performance of the neural network technique in a placer deposit situated at the Nome district in Alaska. Initially a single neural network model was constructed to estimate the gold grade. However, at a later stage, an ensemble model consisting of multiple networks was also constructed via the Adaboost algorithm. The reason behind the use of the ensemble model of the Adaboost algorithm was to examine if the ensemble model provided superior performance to the single neural network. As indicated by other studies, Adaboost did not have a better performance than a single neural network in this specific application. This may be due to the high noise inherent in the gold data used in this project. Consequently R2 values of gold prediction are also poor for both the single and multiple networks.
