With prevailing assumptions that plentiful domestic coal reserves will be available for meeting our Nation’s expectations for on future low emission, coal-fired power plants, major government funding in Clean Coal Technology, and Carbon Sequestration Programs continues to be aggressive. However, after more than a decade of cutbacks in funding for domestic coal-related programs and personnel, there is a growing concern that adequate quantification and qualification of our Nation’s coal reserves is increasingly being compromised. This paper will define the growing concerns and dichotomies that continue to increase, and address the decreasing number of fossil fuel mapping and assessment programs by Federal and State programs.

Blue Mountain Minerals is a large supplier of calcium carbonate products used by various manufacturers as a major raw material. Very small amounts of free carbon in the rock can have a huge impact in carbon-sensitive applications. The marble in the deposit at Blue Mountain Minerals contains variable amounts of free carbon in the form of trace amounts of the mineral graphite.To make quality improvements, variography was used to measure the impact of non-ideal sampling practices at the Blue Mountain Minerals operations in Columbia, California in the United States. A major investment in correct sampling systems and sampling protocols was implemented over a one-year period. Subsequent variography was used to measure the improvement on the predictability of the graphite content in marble produced by the quarry and as it is processed as an acceptable raw material for extremely carbon-sensitive applications. The improvements of the sampling protocols, control of long-range changes and better knowledge of process cycles are easily noticeable on variograms when they happen to exist. First Quantum Minerals (FQM) operates the Cayeli underground copper mine in Turkey. In response to a lost time incident (LTI) that occurred at the mine in 2022, the mine management decided to introduce a new safety approach on-site. The initiative began with a comprehensive safety culture analysis conducted by Arti Consulting, involving focus group studies. Employees actively participated in candid discussions, sharing their insights on safety issues and offering solutions. These conversations were meticulously audio recorded, resulting in over 150 000 words collected from more than 100 employees. These transcribed narratives then underwent rigorous semantic analysis, with the assistance of a sociologist, to identify and dissect patterns of unsafe behaviour. This analysis found areas for improvement, particularly in near-miss and incident reporting, quality of safety toolbox talks and effectiveness of pre-work risk assessments. Subsequently, mine management deliberated on these insights and devised corrective actions. An emphasis was placed on involving all employees in the corrective actions through communication training, empowering them to own the decisions and changes made. These impactful measures were seamlessly integrated into FQM’s Think! Safety Program, which embodies FQM’s sensible health and safety strategy. FQM partnered with Strika Entertainment (Strika) to develop innovative visual-first safety communication tools that use illustration, animation and graphic design to simplify complex messaging into easy-to-understand edutainment. As part of this approach to safety communications, Cayeli and Strika revamped the safety toolbox talks to encourage employees to voice their concerns and receive feedback when their suggestions were implemented. The response from employees has been positive, with over 200 unsafe behaviours and conditions reported within the initial two months of launching the Think! Safety Program. Remarkably, the Cayeli Mine has not experienced any LTIs for the past 500 days as of 9 December 2023. This paper encapsulates the dedicated efforts to transform Cayeli into a safer mining operation.

In-situ recovery of metals is presently experiencing a revival not seen since early applications in amenable copper oxide deposits, uranium and generally applications where neither, porosity and permeability, nor process chemistry have been prohibitively difficult. With ever decreasing grades in current mining operations or Greenfields projects and ever increasing capital and operating costs, in-situ recovery is looked to as the processing option that will both unlock these deposits as well as potentially derive revenue from mineralised waste remaining in the ground once traditional mining and processing methods become uneconomical. In-situ recovery is also being looked to as a mining method that minimises the environmental impact sustained in the application of traditional energy and water intensive mining and processing operations where millions of tonnes of ore are mined from the earth, processed on surface and then disposed of in both waste dumps and tailings facilities. The key challenge facing companies like Newcrest is that these low-grade deposits or remnant mines are generally hard rock applications that require costly methods to liberate the valuable minerals. A further challenge includes identifying suitable chemistries that both facilitate the economic recovery of gold and copper and that may be considered environmentally acceptable. This paper presents a desktop study whereby the issues of access creation and chemical extraction are discussed and evaluated with a view to driving future research in the area and unlocking this application as a real processing option. INTRODUCTION Mining companies are increasingly challenged by low grade, deep and complex ore deposits which are no longer economically exploitable by current methods. The large footprint of current open pit operations can present obstacles for permitting and social acceptance. For these reasons in-situ recovery (ISR) technologies are receiving renewed attention as a technology which could be used to exploit these more complex deposits economically and with less environmental impact. The environmental impact may be further reduced if emphasis is placed on use of renewable energy sources rather than traditional grid power, gas turbine or diesel generators are employed to drive the operation. A potential renewable energy driven ISR mine of the future is shown in Figure 1.

The general nature of the special constructional features that are required to provide safety from explosion hazards on machines approved as permissible by the Bureau of Mines is fairly well known to mining men who are at all interested in safety. These requirements are outlined in the schedules, under the provisions of which the investigations of such machines are conducted. Also, the method of conducting inspections and. tests of such machines has been described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, published in 1929. A more detailed knowledge of the special safety features of a particular machine is often useful and sometimes essential for inspectors, safety engineers, maintenance men, and engineers in selecting machines for a particular application. Three bulletins that give information of this nature have been published by the bureau, viz., Bulletin 313, Permissible Storage-Battery Locomotives and Power Trucks. Mine inspection in Alaska by the Federal mine inspector was somewhat handicapped during 1915,the inspector having to spend a large part of the summer and fall in examining the Matanuska coal field in connection with the designation of the Government reservations and the leasing units in that field. However, in addition to>this work, the mines in southeastern and southwestern Alaska were inspected by both Federal and Territorial inspectors, a considerable number of men near the Federal inspector's officeat Juneau were trained in first aid to the injured and in the use of mine rescue apparatus, the mines of the interior and of Seward Peninsula were inspected by the Territorial inspector, and a suit was brought in the name of the Territorial inspector for the nonreporting of serious accidents under the Territorial inspection law. The work of the Federal inspector was handicapped also by a lack of field assistants. This condition is likely to be serious, as preparations have been made for opening the Matanuska, Bering River, and Nenana coal fields, and a number of permits granting the free use of 10-acre tracts in other fields throughout the Territory have been issued. The need of a comprehensive inspection law and experienced engineers to safeguard the opening of coal mines by operators who are not familiar with coal mining and are using inexperienced help is obvious.

"Many underground mines are achieving extended life and optimizing existing facilities by mining at greater depths. The challenges to do this require a sound engineering approach to mine design and mine services, as well as ingenuity in safety design. The social consequence is full utilization of existing infrastructure.Accessing ores at depths of 2000 m to 3000 m requires exceptional hoisting design. May’s theme issue includes a paper that examines a case study of one such hoisting plant, with emphasis on the hoist rope selection at Agnico-Eagle’s Penna shaft. The paper also describes the process whereby consultation with provincial safety authorities resulted in a revised safety factor suited to the hoist. Another paper examines the challenges of ventilating mechanized mines to 3000 m, including air cooling and dilution of diesel exhaust emissions. Vent system designs are discussed, using sound engineering design, and proven technology that minimizes emissions to achieve cost efficiencies. The paper suggests design based on process and ventilation simulators to obtain realistic economic data at the design stage. Increased ground pressures present unique challenges for production and safety. While this is not confined to deep mining, one paper examines rock pressures and seismic events at the Brunswick mine, for which experience may be applied at depth. It describes seismic monitoring as a predictive tool in a real mine situation, and how it is used to improve overall recoveries and maintain worker safety."

Desde 1999 se desarrollaron pruebas de lixiviación de concentrados en la planta LESDE de Toquepala con el propósito de evaluar las recuperaciones y los tiempos de procesamiento. Las recuperaciones a nivel laboratorio indican que la promoción de la actividad bacteriana es uno de los factores para acelerar el proceso de solubilización del cobre calcopiritico del concentrado. La actividad bacteriana se define como la capacidad de adaptación que tienen las bacterias en medios lixiviantes para elevar la velocidad de oxidación del ión ferroso y convertirlo en férrico y es el mecanismo para la lixiviación del sulfuro primario o calcopirita, el resultado de la interacción de las bacterias ferrooxidantes, el oxígeno y el control de ácido que mantienen un pH por debajo de 2.1. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala las pruebas de lixiviación de concentrados que incluyen estos últimos conceptos, con el objetivo de evaluar la factibilidad técnica y económica de obtener licores de cobre que puedan ser aprovechados utilizando la capacidad existente de extracción por solventes y electrodepositación de la planta LESDE Toquepala.

During the last decade, MHO has continued to diversify the feed. of its Hoboken smelter. The range of feed materials including larger proportions of precious metals has been extended and the production of minor metals has been developed. These diversifications have required further improvements at the smelter. Attention has been particularly focussed on an increase of productivity, compliance with emission standards and achievement of the highest recoveries of valuable elements. The assaying and sampling facilities have been considerably expanded and the different processing steps of the smelter are now also systematically controlled and managed by simulation models. The charge preparation at the sinter plant, returns handling, sinter conditioning and corresponding ventilation systems have been completely renewed. The annual smelting requirement is now achieved with two blast furnaces instead of three. This is the result of rebuilding and enlarging one of the furnaces and, of a completely new concept of the charge proportioning and charging systems, together with oxygen enrichment and blast air preheat. Ventilation capacity has also been drastically increased. A 7 MVA electric furnace for cleaning the slag from both blast furnaces. contributes to improving the overall metal recovery.

"INTRODUCTION The Lookout Mountain coal deposits were examined by J.L. Stratton, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in April and May 1943. The area investigated includes that part of southern Lookout Mountain in townships 4 to 8, south, ranges-9 to 11 east, and contains approximately 140 square miles in DeKalb and Cherokee Counties in northeastern Alabama (fig. 1.)Six coal seams having a minable thickness of 18 or more inches are represented in the area. The third seam, known locally as the Hill seam, has been correlated with the Upper Cliff No.1 seam and is referred to as such throughout this report. The preliminary investigation indicated that the Upper Cliff No. 1 seam is a low-volatile, high-grade coking coal. The work done on this project was confined principally to determining the amount and grade of coal in this seam.The only existing maps of mines in the area were one of the Lookout Fuel Co. at Lahusage, Ala. (fig. 2), and one of the Lookout Mountain Iron Co. at Battelle, Ala. (fig. 3), Consequently, to gain some knowledge of the grade and tonnage mined, surveys of the other mines were necessary. Many of them were caved, and many were filled with water, necessitating considerable preliminary work."

The Detroit salt mine is operated by the Detroit Salt Co. It is one of the oldest underground room-and-pillar mines in the United States still in production. Mining at the Detroit salt mine began in 1906 with the sinking of the No. 1 shaft. Mining continued through the years, becoming progressively more modern in its equipment and techniques, until it was closed in 1983. In 1997, after a period of care and maintenance, the newly formed Detroit Salt Co. decided to reopen the mine. Upon completion of an extensive rehabilitation program, salt production resumed in 1998. Production currently continues at a rate of 910kt/a (1 million stpy). To date, the Detroit salt mine has mined more than 45 Mt (50 million st).This mine is unique because it lies under a heavily urbanized area within metropolitan Detroit. The mine and its history make a good case study for the continuing coexistence between the mining industry and its environs.

Equivalent elastic properties of discontinuously jointed rock masses are computed using a non-representative volume element(NRVE) approach within a three dimensional finite element program. Joint persistence, defined as the percentage of a joint plane that is actually occupied by joint material, is used in the NRVE computations as a step towards greater realism in stability analysis of mine openings. Persistence p is also the probability that a segment of a joint plane is occupied by joint material. Computations reveal a threshold phenomenon in jointed rock mass moduli similar to that observed in percolation theory. A rapid decrease in moduli occurs above a critical value pc(about 0.6). A detailed analysis of the well-known solution for stress about a circular opening in isotropic, elastic ground illustrates the effects of joint set orientation, spacing and persistence. Although stable “on average”, joint segment failures reveal a threat to stability and point towards rational design of reinforcement or support of discontinuously jointed rock masses.

The mining industry in Colorado faces the same problems the industry faces throughout the United States and the world — record low commodity prices and increasing regulatory and environmental restrictions that seemed designed to curtail mining activities. Despite those obstacles, the mining industry in Colorado still contributes about $8 billion annually to the state’s economy in the form of base and precious metals, industrial minerals, coal and associated service businesses and jobs. So the 300 attendees at the102nd National Western Mining Conference felt reason-ably positive about the industry in their state. The meeting is the Colorado Mining Association’s annual conference and was held at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs in November. The theme was “Mining in the New Millennium — Achievement + Innovation = Survival.” Experts from Colorado’s mining industry and abroad discussed the challenges faced by the mining industry as it enters the new millennium. They offered insights into how the industry will operate during the early years of the 21st century and how it will survive low prices and increased regulatory restrictions.

Early-Archaean (3.26 Ga) volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits located within the low strain and sub-prehnite-pumpellyite metamorphic-grade Strelley greenstone belt, East Pilbara, Western Australia, contain exceptionally well preserved sulphide textures which are directly analogous to those of sulphide chimneys formed by black smokers at present day submarine hydrothermal vents. The VMS deposits are associated with seafloor alteration zones in and below silica-carbonate laminites, at the top of tholeiitic to calc-alkaline intermediate and felsic rocks. VMS mineralisation comprises stratabound Zn-rich sulphide lenses with significant Cu and barite, and variable Pb and Ag, above Cu-rich stringer zones, all of which are similar to Phanerozoic polymetallic or Kuroko VMS deposits. Sulphide-sulphate mineralisation implicates hydrothermal discharge into sulphate-bearing ocean waters, ruling out a globally anoxic Archaean hydrosphere. The volcanic rocks and co-magmatic sub-volcanic intrusion hosting the VMS deposits are characterised by the conjunction of LILE>LREE>HREE, and Phanerozoic La/Yb with negative normalised anomalies of Nb, P and Ti, consistent with derivation via subduction zone hydrous metasomatism fusing the mantle lithosphere.

In a world of 2-dimensional design documents, envisioning and understanding 3-dimensional interferences for complex foundation construction scenarios can be challenging. Videos and computer models serve as 3-dimensional spatial aids but have drawbacks related to a fixed perspective. Augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) provide new tools to communicate design challenges and improve construction planning. This paper provides a practical look at the basics of AR/VR systems and the tools available to the foundation design and construction industry by giving a high-level example of the technologies’ use in the design and delivery phases of a complex micropile installation project for the remediation of a dam foundation. Using these technologies, GEI was able to design and deliver a complex foundation remediation solution. AR/VR benefited regulators, and the client, to help understand the design concept, construction sequencing, and approach to overcoming installation challenges. Due to its user-friendly nature and less rigorous programming and hardware requirements, AR proved to be more useful than VR for this scenario. AR/VR will likely not replace videos and computer models; however, it can be a useful 3-dimensional visualization aid that complements the project delivery process and offers benefits that traditional methods cannot. INTRODUCTION Augmented and virtual reality is a promising and rapidly developing technology within the engineering and construction world. Like any rapidly developing new technology, the language describing it can be confusing and dynamic. To eliminate the confusion some definitions must be made. AR/ VR definitions The definitions of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) for the purposes of this paper are as follows: VR is a computer-generated immersive environment that the user experiences within a digital 3- dimensional space (Satava, 1993)AR is a composite view created by superimposing digital objects into the user’s real-world view (Azuma, 1997). Often, VR is used in an office environment and allows the user to “visit” the digital site to review site planning, construction sequences, and interference geometry. AR can be utilized in both the office and onsite environments. Like VR, the in-office application for AR is commonly site planning. AR also can be utilized in the field for applications such as seeing through the ground to locate known existing obstructions like utilities, gas tanks, etc.

In open pit mine design, it is customary for geotechnical engineers to define the appropriate slope design angles within practical limits. The conventional approach to slope angle design is based on the comparison of calculated stability indicators, such as the factor of safety (FS) and the probability of failure (PF), with generic acceptability criteria not directly related to the impacts of failure. A major drawback of this type of approach is related to the difficulty of defining meaningful acceptability criteria. An alternative methodology of pit slope design is proposed, where the economic impacts of potential slope failures are calculated and used as the elements on which to apply the acceptability criteria for design. The methodology is based on the construction of a graph, referred to as a risk map, that relates the probability of exceeding the economic impact of slope failure to the magnitude of the impact measured in monetary terms. The process includes the analysis of a selected number of representative years of the mine plan and slope sections of the pit areas to define the required inputs for the construction of the risk map. The paper discusses the concepts used in interpreting the probability of slope failure, and describes the approach followed for the estimation of the economic impacts of slope failure and the construction of the risk map. Finally, the two main uses of the risk map are discussed, including the comparison with acceptability criteria for the evaluation of a specific open pit design and the comparative analysis of open pit design options in terms of value and risk to identify optimum pit layouts.

(Canal Zone meeting, November, 1910.) I. INTRODUCTION. THE present truce in litigation between Western smelting and ranching interests gives opportunity for a summary of the results achieved by metallurgists in condensing fume and de-acidifying furnace-gases. In the absence of complete records of past experiments, there has been a good deal of unnecessary duplication of attempts and' failures. Yet, especially under the recent policy of our large corporations, looking to the economic recovery of the values of by- and waste products, original and, in some cases, effective measures have been developed by American metallurgists. In the case of Bliss vs. the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., the Montana Supreme Court, recognizing the progressive efforts made to render the flue-gases innocuous, and the value to the community of the smelting company's operations, refused to hamper its work, and returned a verdict in favor of the defendant. In the trial, the experimental firms of the company in the so-called "affected region" were proved to be thriving perfectly, showing that immunity was guaranteed to vegetation and stock by the wide distribution of the sulphurous acid gas in the dry air of Montana. Indeed, L. S. Austin has proved that by the time the fume is 4,000 ft.. distant from the stack, the percentage of sulphurous acid has been diminished from 2.28 to 0.00045; and Angus Smith has shown that rain must contain 40 parts per million of free acid before vegetation is affected. The arsenic in the stack-gases is but a very small part of the original content of the ore, of which 80 per cent. and over is rejected in the concentrator and furnace waste-products or recovered in the flues. The application of biogeochemical methods in mineral exploration in semi-arid to arid environments in Western Australia has been investigated in an area near Norseman.The study involved a comparison of trace element characteristics of rock, soil and plants in the vicinity of the Pioneer BB prospect, where nickel-iron sulphide mineralization occurs in a "greenstone" sequence of ultrabasic, basic and sedimentary rocks.Analyses of unweathered and partly weathered rock from diamond drill cores show the ultrabasic rock to be highly variable with respect to Ni, Cu, Co, Zn and Mn.Samples of weathered bedrock and overlying soil were analysed for total trace element contents and for the trace elements associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides. Approximately 30 per cent of the total nickel content of the weathered basic rock is associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides, compared with approximately 15 per cent in the weathered ultrabasic rock.The soil has a sufficient residual content to provide a reliable indication of the chemistry of the underlying rock. Total trace element analyses of the -89 mesh fraction show strong anomalies for nickel and copper over the mineralized zone. Important amounts of nickel, cobalt and, to a lesser extent, copper are apparently associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides in the soil.Melaleuca sheathiana (tea tree) has been used to study the relationship between soil and plant chemistry. No strong relationship between plant and rock type was observed. Analyses were made of leaves, twigs, wood, bark and roots, and all plant organs were found to have anomalous nickel and copper contents near the mineralized zone. Leaves were found to give the best contrast in the anomalous area and to show fewer erratic values than other organs. It is concluded that the uptake of trace elements by tea tree is low in the semi-arid to arid environment of Western Australia, but that analyses of the plants do reflect the presence of mineralization.

Although not fully accepted in South Africa, the Theory of Sampling originally proposed by Pierre Gy is fast becoming the cornerstone of sampling practice throughout the world. The growing acceptance of Gy?s Theory of Sampling in South Africa can be attributed to a number of factors, chief amongst them being the development of a tradable mineral asset market, the promulgation of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA), the growing number of commercial and academic courses that are offered on sampling, and the regulation of the industry through internationally acceptable guidelines and rules for reporting and trading in mineral assets. The size of the South African minerals industry and the dependence of our economy on mineral production have also meant that correct sampling is of key importance to mineral trade. ISO standards have been the principal guides for producers of mineral bulk commodities who produce to customers? specifications, whereas Gy?s insights have been most readily accepted by precious and base metals producers whose product is sold into metal markets. Understanding of small-scale variability is essential in the precious and base-metal industries, but detailed studies of the effects of heterogeneity have not been as productive in the bulk commodities. Sampling practices at different stages of mineral development from exploration, face sampling and grade control, ore processing and handling, metallurgical sub-sampling, point of sale sampling, and sampling in the laboratory are considered in the gold, platinum, ferrous metal, and coal industries. A summary of the impact of poor sampling in these industries is presented. Generally it appears that poor sampling practice is most likely to erode mineral asset value at the early stages of mineral development. The benefits of good sampling are considered, especially with regard to the financial implications of bias and error on large and consistent consignments of bulk commodities.
