"Granular activated carbon is widely used in the gold mining industry for gold extraction from aurocyanide-containing slurry. The extraction process can employ carbon as part of the gold recovery operation for various circuit designs including carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuits. However, various qualities of activated carbon exist and the durability of the material can change significantly from source to source. Handling this expensive reagent can pose challenges when fine carbon losses occur in the CIP, CIC, and CIL circuits. Additionally, any gold that is adsorbed to these carbon fines can also be lost by various mechanisms including carbon attrition and fracturing, inefficient coarse-fine separation, and poor carbon fines capture. With the above in mind, a series of tests were conducted to investigate standardizing simple laboratory methods for testing carbon quality. A standard procedure beyond or enhancing ASTM methods can serve as additional starting points for evaluating carbon specific to the gold industry. The investigation focused on size distribution, flatness, wet attrition resistance, surface area, gold kinetics, and gold loading. The final results provided information to generate an equation for ranking carbon samples to plant performance.IntroductionActivated carbon for use in gold extraction is amongst the most commonly found processes in modern gold-milling plants. Parts I and II in this series of papers presented the chemistry of medium-temperature pressure leaching of copper sulfide concentrates and reviewed the metallurgical development of a process to effectively recover copper using medium-temperature pressure leaching and direct electrowinning (DEW). Part III reviewed the large-scale demonstration of the MT-DEW-SX process at Bagdad, Arizona. Key features of the process were the use of superfine grinding of the concentrate (to a P98 of 12 to 15 µm and a P80 of 6 to 7 µm), pressure leaching at 160ºC with 1,380 kPa (200 psig) oxygen overpressure, DEW to produce LME Grade A cathode, recycling some of the lean electrolyte to the pressure leaching step, and treatment of a lean electrolyte bleed by solution extraction (SX). Recycling of lean electrolyte provided all of the acid required to effectively dissolve copper and convert approximately 65% to 70% of the sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur, resulting in an acid-autogenous process for pressure leaching. This paper (Part IV) discusses the development and design of a full-scale commercial application for the Morenci operation in Arizona.

This paper discusses the progress of the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine from the pre-feasibility study completed in 2005, through commencement of development access in 2008, completion of the feasibility in 2010 and cave initiation in late 2015. This fourth lift of caving in the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) is located 500 m below the currently producing Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine and represents approximately half a billion tonnes of ore and around 1900 planned drawpoints, scheduled to be mined at a peak of 80 000 t/d.The paper reviews the mine design, access requirements, planned footprint sequence and major fixed facility installations such as ventilation, oreflow and shops. A discussion of the preproduction development and construction activities and some of the critical technical challenges overcome during this time frame are addressed, as well as the cave initiation process undertaken in late 2015 and the ramp-up of production and progression of caving.CITATION:Casten, T, Priatna, A and Rumbino, H, 2016. Separations, which form along stratigraphic boundaries in the roofs of potash mines, pose a serious safety concern. If these separations go undetected they can lead to falls of ground. The current method of identifying the location and extent of these separations is through manual scaling (sounding) using an aluminium rod. The potash mining companies would like to have a tool, which could quickly and reliably detect these separations and distinguish between them and clay seams. This paper presents the results of field trials undertaken at various potash mines in Saskatchewan belonging to the member companies of the Saskatchewan Potash Producers Association. A ground penetrating radar instrument from RST called SUSI (stepped frequency, ultra-wideband, synthetic aperture radar instrument) was used. SUSI has the ability of working over various frequency bandwidths. Four mines were chosen for these field trials, covering the different geological characteristics encountered in the Saskatchewan potash mines: Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan?s (PCS) Allan and Lanigan Divisions, Agrium?s Vanscoy Potash Operations and IMC Potash?s K2 Mine. These field trials indicated that stepped frequency ground penetrating radar technology could be ?tuned? to identify both separations and clay stratigraphy in the softrock, potash mine environment, based on the different spectral responses of the features.

Rock mass classification systems are extensively used in rock engineering design work, and mine design is no exception. Among the systems most widely used for mining-related design work are the NGI 0-system (Barton et al., 1974), the RMR system (Bieniawski, 1976), the MRMR system (Laubscher and Taylor, 1976) and, more recently, the GSI system (Hoek et al., 1998). Classifying the rock mass is widely seen as being the fieldwork required to characterize the rock mass and enable the application of empirical design methods associated with the different classification systems. This paper argues that it is fundamentally important to recognize the distinction between rock mass characterization and rock mass classification. These two processes should, in most cases, be separated from each other. Rock mass characterization should be used to determine the intrinsic properties of the rock mass independently of the application; i.e. independent from the infrastructure to be designed, the size, shape, and orientation of the excavation(s) or pillar(s), etc. Rock mass characterization should also be compatible with most classification systems and empirical design methods to be used. Rock mass characterization is the background fieldwork required to perform rock mass classification and/or engineering design work. Rock mass classification is the subsequent step to the characterization, and an integral part of the design process. Parameters that vary according to the design, such as the relative orientation of geological structures compared to the opening or the mine-induced stresses, should be calculated as part of the rock mass classification and design process, rather than during the rock mass characterization process. The failure to distinguish between rock mass characterization and rock mass classification can lead to major design errors and poor results.

A shortage of anthracite for home heating indicates the necessity of using other fuels for this purpose; low-volatile bituminous, or "soft" coal is the most feasible supplementary fuel, either burned alone or when mixed with anthracite. Comparison of Bituminous Coal and Anthracite Whereas anthracite is clean, burns without smoke, and requires little attention, bituminous coal is dusty, tends to burn with a smoky flame, and forms coke in the fire pot that must be broken up to maintain a continuous high output of heat. When properly fired, however, bituminous coal responds more quickly than anthracite to changes in damper settings and consequently can supply more heat in a short time. It is generally less expensive and usually contains less ash than anthracite.

"In the 1960’s, when large flotation machines appeared on the market, this was a part of a world-wide trend towards the use of ever larger machine units.One factor that has played a decisive part in this development is the increased of the amounts of ore that have to be handled as the exploitation of successively poorer ores becomes necessary. The advancing application of instrumentation and automation has worked in the same direction.In 1970, a working group was set up within Outokumpu Oy, for the purpose of flotation machine development. The principal task of this group was to be the design and development of- a new type of rotor of increased efficiency, especially for the dispersion of large amounts of air- a mechanical-pneumatic flotation machine of substantially larger size that existing plant.This development project required an extensive program of theoretical investigation and experimental studies at several concentration plants of the company.The commonest flotation machine presently used in the concentration plants of Outokumpu Oy is the VK-3. It is of the mechanical-pneumatic type, and the volume of its cell tanks is 2.5 m3 per shaft. This machine was developed within the company, and its first development phase i s represented by the OKKO 3, built for the Kotalahti concentrator in 1959. It was, in its time, comparable in volume to the largest machines that were then in use anywhere in the world."

Static-Load Piledriving systems utilize hydraulic push to advance piles into the ground. Dynamic systems (ie. hammers and vibratory equipment) utilize impact, or vibration, to advance the piles. Static-Load systems are most commonly utilized in situations where noise or vibration would adversely affect the people, structures or equipment located near the site. Static-Load technology is most advantageous in situations where vibration, noise or access constraints make it difficult, risky or disruptive to utilize conventional piledriving systems.

Because segments of the Canadian mineral-based economy are dependent totally or in part on foreign sources of certain minerals, their well-being may well be affected by inability to obtain these minerals. Where such dependency exists, it is therefore important that contingency plans be available to counteract possible price increases or lack of supplies by means of technology, developed well in advance of any pending crisis . Canada is vulnerable to possible future real or artificial shortages of certain foreign-produced mineral commodities, and science and technology can provide information for the development of policies for counteracting efforts by foreign exporters to control prices or limit supplies.

"INTRODUCTION During the course of the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, examining 'engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples from seven manganese properties in Grand and beery Counties, Utah. These were supplemented by five samples submitted by property owners. Since all of the ores were too low-grade for use in producing ferromanganese for steel manufacture, some means of beneficiation was required to produce marketable concentrates, and metallurgical studies were made on each of the samples.Most of the ores Investigated are similar in one respect: At least part of the 'manganese oxide areas contains minute inclusions of gangue. This occurrence materially enhances the complexity of the ore, partly by .increasing the complexity of mineral association, but largely through making manganese-quartz liberation more difficult. In such ores, there is a marked tendency for the manganese minerals to be retained as shells or coatings on the surfaces of quartz particles when crushed. Particles of this type represent considerable loss of manganese in tailing, if gravity-concentration methods are employed, or tend to' float, thus carrying an appreciable quantity of gangue into the concentrate, if treated by flotation.Plus 48-percent manganese sinters were made from some of the ores tested, but, in general, intimate association of manganese minerals with silica limited the degree of beneficiation attainable."

Operational readiness is a commonly used term in mining and many other industry settings. However, translating this term into a coherent scope of work that is practical and meaningful is a challenge faced by many mining projects. This inhibits the allocation of resources to the work and its completion. The problem is with understanding how the terminology applies to establishing a mining operation. Resolving this problem requires clarity around what operational readiness means for a mining project’s transition to operations and who owns the tasks of completing operational readiness. The motivation for resolution of this problem is in appreciating the consequences arising from any lack of clarity in definition of this task, the timing of the work, and ownership for its completion. In broad terms, these consequences amount to an erosion of value at a critical time for both the new mine and the company and shareholders. This situation often arises where operational readiness is not adequately addressed in project’s study phases. As a result, neither time, resources nor money are adequately provided to complete the work required. In other cases, operational readiness is sometimes assimilated with the delivery of the project’s physical assets by the project’s construction team, rather than aligned with the establishment of the operating team to deliver the desired operational outputs. This paper argues that operational readiness starts in a project’s study phases and flows through into the start of operations. The definition of operational readiness is discussed as a task, and a model for its planning and completion is presented. This discussion includes assigning ownership for operational readiness planning and delivery to the General Manager of a new operation and the operations leadership team, who are central to the success of this work. After all, the reputations of this leadership team depend on the performance of the operation in its first few years. The author’s work over the last 20 years, leading operational readiness programs and the preparation of feasibility studies for mining projects, has provided the insights and evolution of ideas that are central to this paper. Operational readiness is fundamentally directed at ensuring a new mining operation gets away to a successful start and builds a solid foundation for the future of the mine/operation/province. It requires clarity of purpose, ownership and coordination by people in the operating team, and their preparation of the requisite process definition and establishment of the significant relationships required for operations. Without its successful completion, it is unlikely the new operation will meet and sustain its start-up targets. This paper discusses a practical approach to operational readiness for mining projects.

Currently produced zinc-enriched blast furnace dust is stored on site at CORUS IJmuiden. To end this practise, a research program was started in 1996. Four technologies were studied: oxidative autoclave leaching in a chloride medium, fluid bed pyrohydrochloridisation (pyrohydrolysis) to yield lead-zinc-free (hematite) calcine, EAF (plasma) smelting/zinc fuming, and incorporation of the dust in 'iron foundry cupola charges. All aim to remove zinc and lead, recycle the iron residue internally, and produce a saleable zinc-lead product.

Greater awareness of the increasing need to develop supplementary energy sources is accelerating us towards many basic decisions regarding future utilization of mined energy materials -- uranium, coal, oil sands and oil shale. The latter material comprises a major potential source of oil which will require creation of unusually large and low-cost underground mining systems. In this paper, the author briefly outlines and analyzes several of the factors which continue to provide the somewhat unique character of oil shale nine planning and mine operation.

The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the National Send and Gravel Association conducted a safety contest in 1929 Among producers of sand and gravel. Only 26 plants were enrolled, as the contest was late getting under way. It is hoped that a ranch larger number of plants will be represented in the safety competition of 1930. Two trophies, both of which were provided by Rock Products magazine, were awarded at the end of the contest; one trophy was given for the best safety record among plants working 100,000 or mare man-hours during the year and the other for the beat record among plants working less than 100,000 man-hours. The trophies were presented to representatives of the winning, companies on January 29, 1930, at the annual convention of the National Sand and Gravel Association at Memphis, Tenn.

"LIKE ALL OTHER NOVA SCOTIANS, I have been thrilled during the past few years with the growing evidence that substantial reserves of oil and gas are being discovered off the Atlantic coast of Canada. There are those in this province who believe that large-scale commercial production is just around the corner, and that when it starts Nova Scotia will begin to float on a sea of royalties. These overly optimistic people, of whom I am not one, are convinced that with the first barrel of oil shipped to market, Nova Scotia can forget its financial problems while its people take on the luxurious lifestyle of the shieks of Kuwait or Saudi Arabia. You and I know, however, that even though offshore oil and gas may turn out to be the greatest gift nature has ever bestowed on Eastern Canada, it may take some considerable time before the reserves can be accurately assessed, before the industry can become fully operational, and before the benefits of production can be translated into royalties and tax revenue, improved public services, new industrial facilities and more jobs. While it is premature for the ordinary Nova Scotian to take on the habit of buying expensive cigars and lighting them with ten-dollar bills, it is not too early for him to insist that governments and industry plan intensively and well for the beneficial exploitation of undersea resources."

ABSTRACT: Hydraulic experiments have been conducted since 1997 within a small fractured calcareous rock mass in southeastern France, at a site called Coaraze. On this reduced-scale site closing a floodgate located on a downstream spring produces repeated hydraulic loadings. Simultaneous measurements of normal deformations and pressure in several joints have provided a better understanding of the hydromechanical behaviour of such a fractured rock mass. The present paper first describes both the site and conceptual interpretation of the measurements performed. We showed that accurate measurement reproduction requires incorporating certain features: a variable normal joint stiffness, the joint vicinity (through introducing a Z coefficient), and the initial stress state. The paper then develops an original analytical interpretation of the coupled pressure-displacement measurements carried out, which reveal the high level of measurement suitability to the non-linear behaviours examined. 2D modelling, using the discontinuous code (UDEC) was used to proceed with the calibration step. In diesem kleinen Standort, werden wiederholte Wasserdruck Erhöhungen durch das Schliessen eines Hahnes produziert. Gleichzeitiger Druck und normale Verformung Meßungen in mehreren Fugen haben erlaubt, das hydromechanische Verhalten einer solche gebrochene Felsenmasse besser zu verstehen. Der Artikel beschreibt zuerst den Standort und stellt die begrifflichen Interpretationen der Meßungen vor. Um die Meßungen gut zu reproduzieren ist es wesentlich, bestimmte Faktoren wie die veränderliche normale Steifheit der Fugen, die Nachbarschaft der Fugen (über einen Z-Koeffizient) und der Spannungstand zu berücksichtigen. Der Artikel erklärt die originale Methode für die Druck- und Verformungs-Meßungen Interpretation und zeigt die gute Korrelation der Meßungen mit dem nicht-linearen angenommen Verhaltens der Fugen. Die numerische 2D-Modellierung mit dem UDEC Software ist für die Verkeilung der Faktoren gebraucht worden. L'article précise la méthode originale d'interprétation des mesures pression-déplacements qui montre la bonne adéquation aux lois de comportement non linéaire proposées. "Ammonium thiosulphate is a potential replacement for the cyanide in gold leaching. However, the high reagent consumption hinders its practical applications. In order to reduce the thiosulphate consumption, chemical additives were used. The gold leaching tests were conducted on a sulphide copper-bearing gold ore with 0.3M thiosulphate, 0.03M copper sulphate and 3M ammonium hydroxide solution at 44% solids and pH 10.2. Sulphate, sulphite, amino acid and chelating agents were initially used as additives. It was found that chelating agents (EDTA and NTA) could reduce the thiosulphate consumption from 30 kg/t to 17.8 kg/t with some increase of gold extraction. The improvement from other additives was not significant. Other approaches were also attempted to reduce thiosulphate consumption with some success. The thiosulphate consumption could be reduced to about 17 kg/t by reducing copper sulphate concentration fiom 0.03M to 0.0015M; adding 0.04M of EDTA; replacing copper sulphate with 0.001M of nickel sulphate. The increase of pulp density fkom 44% to 60% solids could reduce the thiosulphate consumption to 17 kg/t as well. Limiting the dissolved oxygen content by sparging nitrogen reduced the thiosulphate consumption further to 10 kg/t. It could be concluded that the regulations of copper and oxygen supply in the lixiviant were the keys to reduce the reagent consumption.INTRODUCTIONCyanidation, as the predominant gold leaching method, has been used in mining industry for more than a century. The low reagent requirement and the high performance are the reasons for its great success. However, cyanidation cannot deal with ores containing large amount of copper, nickel, arsenic and zinc minerals. This type of ore may consume more reagents and result in a poor gold extraction. On the other hand, the carbonaceous materials may preg-rob the gold from pregnant solution and make cyanidation a problem leaching method. Further more, the high toxicity of cyanide represents another challenge to modern gold mines. In the beginning of the year 2000, an environmental disaster caused by an accidental spill in Yugoslavia was broadcasted world-widely (Gurevitch 2000). Gold mine operators are facing higher social pressures and increasing costs on environmental protections. The usage of cyanide in mining industry has been banned in some countries and locations such as Czech Republic, Japan, Turkey, California, Colorado, Wisconsin and Montana States. Thus, a non-cyanide lixiviant is required."
