This report describes the mining and milling practices used by the Eastern Magnesia Talc Co. at its Johnson, Vt., operation. The report also contains a description of the local geology and all available information on cost and performance data. Since 1925 the mine has produced continuously at an average annual rate of 54,000 tons, and the ratio of ore hoisted to finished product is roughly 2 to 1. Ore is stoped by a combination of shrinkage and sublevel methods. In any 24-hour period the mill produces an average total of 14 grades of finished talc product, 9 by dry grinding and air classification and 5 by wet grinding and flotation methods. The mine operates one shift per day, 5 days per week and the mill operates on a 3-shift, 5-1/2-day-per-week basis. Operating costs for 1958, on a percentage basis, were mining, 22.34; milling, 54.77; ore haulage, 2.89; and all other, 20.00 percent.

The direct retorting of zinc sulfide concentrates in the presence of lime and carbon was examined on a laboratory scale with ten-gram charges of loose mix or fifteen-gram ones of pellets. A slow stream of nitrogen swept through the furnace tube over the boat of reactants, carrying with it the zinc vapor, which condensed on a rolled-up steel sheet near the exit, permitting weight of zinc produced to be obtained after completion of a run. Variables explored were percent of theoretical reagents, temperature, and time. During the runs gas samples were analysed periodically, and the content of CO2, CO and nitrogen were obtained. The quantities of the carbon gases could be calculated because the nitogen flow rate was measured. The gases were also examined for sulfur species, but neither COS nor SO2 could be detected at maximum sensitivity. Zinc recovery increased with excess carbon and lime and with temperature. It ranged from 77% at a ten percent deficiency to 90% at a ten percent excess at 1100°C. Going to 1200°C and theoretical reagents gave 93% recovery. Increasing time from 200 minutes to 300 minutes increased zinc yield by up to 10%. Results from sphalerite and a commercial concentrate from AMAX gave generally similar results. The reaction rate of zinc sulfide as sphalerite and of calcined sphalerite indicated that the latter reacted almost twice as fast, and recovery of zinc was five percent higher. Though the retorting step using sulfide, lime, and carbon proved to be non-polluting, it was feared that on storage the calcium sulfide in the residues would decompose, giving off noxious gases. Consequently the stabilization of the residues by oxidation was essayed. Because of the presence of unreacted zinc sulfide, the first product of oxidation was S02. Reaction of CaS to CaSO4 was incomplete, going from 20% at 800°C to 90% at 1200°C. Thus the non-polluting nature of the process as a whole is in doubt, and its economics are likely to be unfavorable compared to the traditional way of calcining the concentrates, followed by retorting of the oxide with carbon.

India is targeting to boost its electrical capacity from 100 GW to 200 GW within the next 10 years. The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has decided in2001 to take execution of the 800 MW Stage-II of the prestigious 2,051 MW Parbatihydrol electric project in Kulu district of the northern province Himachal Pradesh. Two parallel 30° inclined underground pressure shafts of 1.542m in length each will be excavated in different geological formations and lined with hexagonal concrete segments by a hard rock double shield TBM. That kind of heading will be a novelty to India and an innovative method for inclined pressure shafts. The 4.88m Mitsubishi DSTBM will be assembled underground on a swivelling steel platform especially designed for the launching as well as for the acceptance of the TBM in the upper cavern of each shaft. The hexagonal segmental lining system causes a significant higher job safety than an open TBM with conventional support. Each ring consists of four honeycomb segments with 20 cm thickness. After finalisation of the excavation a steel liner will be installed and concreted. The Joint Venture Jäger-Seli will perform the two pressure shafts as a sub-contractor for the Indian company Gammon India Ltd.

As the 2009 George Fox Conference neared its conclusion, Arthur Silber, project chief of the Mass Transit Tunnel (MTT) project was able to pull away from the constant buzzing of his Blackberry long enough to give a short presentation and a significant piece of news to the record 318 attendees at the Graduate Center, City University of New York regarding the MTT project. ?As the former administration (The Bush administration) was leaving office, we were told that Congress was notified of the FTA?a (Federal Transit Authority?s) intent to issue final design construction approval to us,? Silber said of recent advancements concerning the $7.2-billion dollar project. It will add passenger rail service from New Jersey to New York City as part of the Access to the Region?s Core project in the form of the Trans Hudson Express Tunnel (THE tunnel). ?That 10-day waiting period ended yesterday (Jan. 26).? In days leading up the Fox Conference, those involved in the tunneling industry, and the MTT in particular, had a lot to be optimistic about. The MTT received environ-mental approval on Jan. 14 (see page 9) and, with the acceptance of the final design, the multi-billion dollar project moved that much closer to a ground-breaking ceremony. So close, in fact, that before leaving his office for the conference, Silber posted the contract documents and plans for the Manhattan Tunnel project online at www.arctunnel.com (an indepth look at the project from Silber is on page 22). While many were interested in the progress of the project, Silber also spoke about the new plans for the cavern complex at the New York Penn Station expansion. The original plans called for two lines that would come into a large cavern complex with a north and south cavern to access the trains. After numerous core samples were taken from the streets of Manhattan, it was deter-mined that this design was not feasible and changes were made that will include a deeper cavern under Sixth Avenue, with 14-m (45-ft) of cover with a 30-m (96-ft) wide cavern that resides entirely under 34th Street. The cavern was also moved 20 m (60 ft) to the west to remain at least 61 m (200 ft) away from New York City Water Tunnel #1. The new design will include three-over-three track arrangement. The mezzanine will be 46 m (150 ft) below street level at 8th Ave, Silber said.

As directed by the MINER act of 2006, the NIOSH Office of Mine Health & Safety Research (OMSHR) has annually awarded contracts to enhance mine safety and health. OMSHR has a history of research that focuses on both respirable coal mine dust and respirable crystalline silica (or quartz) dust, and contracts have been awarded since 2010 in support of our intramural research efforts. In 2018, a National Academies of Science consensus study report recommended expansion of respirable dust research. As a result, beginning in 2018 through 2021, eighteen contracts were awarded focusing on this area. These contracts can be grouped in three topic areas: characterization of coal/dust, development of real time monitors, and improvement of respirable dust controls. This paper summarizes the outcomes of completed contracts and the progress of current contracts.

SUSTAINED growth characterized the U.S. economy in 1964. Many new peaks were achieved in production, sales, employment, employee earnings, and business profits. At the end of 1964, the economy had experienced 4 years of uninterrupted expansion, and the greatest net gains in output for all postwar cyclical advances had been registered. There were no indications of the various weaknesses which have previously characterized advanced stages of business expansion. Both gross national product (GNP) and national income were 6.7 percent higher than in 1963. In 1964 GNP totaled $628.7 billion, a gain of $39.2 billion over the 1963 figure. On an overall basis, prices rose 1.75 percent in 1964. The real volume of output of goods and services (GNP in constant dollars) increased by 5.0 percent ill 1964; this was more than the 3.8-percent gain in 1963 but less than the 6.6 percent gain in 1962. The 1964 output gain also exceeded the average 3.7 percent annual increase for the postwar period. Congress authorized a two-stage tax reduction designed to further stimulate economic growth and employment. The tax cut favorably affected the 1964 economy in the following ways: By helping to boost personal income, corporate profits, and industrial production; by accelerating the pace of consumer spending and business capital expansion; and by increasing employment, thereby reducing unemployment to 5 percent. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are studying methods to prevent workers from being entangled in machinery used at mining operations. An analysis of mining accidents in the United States that resulted in a fatality or permanent disability from 2000 through 2005 showed 438 severe incidents that involved contact with machinery or equipment, an average of 73 per year. Researchers determined that the most common machinery involved in these severe accidents was conveyors. Also, a significant portion of the accidents occurred during machine maintenance and repair. Researchers are focusing on improved methods to prevent unintentional machine startup during maintenance activity and methods to detect workers near moving machine components. One new technology that shows promise for this application is intelligent video. Popular in the surveillance and security industries, these systems use cameras and computerized video analysis techniques to automatically detect the presence of people in preset zones within the camera?s field of view. A preliminary study has been initiated to determine if this technology could reliably detect the presence of workers in hazardous locations near machinery. Possible advantages of the use of this technology include improved detection zone demarcation and improved ability to distinguish between hazardous and non-hazardous proximity, compared to conventional proximity sensor techniques. Initial tests to detect a person near a conveyor system in daylight conditions showed promising results. A description of the technology, test procedures and results, implementation challenges, and future research needs are discussed.

"Platinum-based alloys are being developed with microstructures similar to nickel-based superalloys for potential high-temperature applications in aggressive environments. Since the chemistries of nickel and platinum are similar, Pt-based alloys can be made with gamma prime ~Pt3Al precipitates in a gamma (Pt) matrix. Currently, the Pt-Al-Cr-Ru system is one of the bases for developing Pt-based alloys, where Al allows the formation of thePt3Al precipitate and also gives protection from the alumina scale formed, Cr provides oxidation resistance and stabilization for the L12~Pt3Al phase, and Ru provides solid solution strengthening in the (Pt) matrix. Four Pt-Al-Cr-Ru-V and two Pt-Al-Cr-Ru-V-Nb alloys were made, with compositions based on a quaternary alloy, ~Pt82:Al12:Cr4:Ru2, which hadpreviously been identified as having optimum properties. Four of the as-cast alloys had the targeted two-phase structure of ~Pt3Al and (Pt), and two were single-phase ~Pt3Al. Vanadium partitioned more to (Pt) than to~Pt3Al. There was an improvement in hardness compared to the quaternary alloys. The best addition of V was ~15 at.%; higher additions resulted in brittle intermetallic phases of the Pt-V system. The effect of Nbcould not be ascertained because of its high losses."

There is one large-scaled iron ore deposit in Inner Mongolia of China, but it is very complex which includes about 170 types of minerals and 71 elements. The hematite, magnetite are mainly iron ores. It is difficult that the iron mineral can be separated efficiently by common dressing methods due to the complexity, and the iron concentrates in the mineral processing factory contains many foreign substance such as K, Na and Si so that the process in iron mill is influenced because of the foreign substance, so it is vital reducing the foreign substance.

Domestic expenditures by the U.S. petroleum industry have exhibited distinctive shifts in emphasis over the past 20 years. From the end of World War II to 1955, expenditures for all phases of the industry expanded. Although over one-half of all expenditures were for production, the relative emphasis was changed after 1956-58 from production toward processing and marketing. The period 1967-69 marked the beginning of a return to emphasis on exploration and production. These trends in expenditure patterns are logical and rational when related to domestic and international economic conditions and to the widespread application of improved production technology. As the immense job of developing the oil resources of Alaska and other regions begins, the petroleum industry will continue to turn to external sources for working capital. Long-term debt will probably be the principal method of external financing through 1970, but a definite shift toward new common and preferred stocks will be made. Higher product prices may be sought by the petroleum industry, but the economics of crude-oil production, changes in the tax structure, and possible changes in the oil imports control program make the price structure of crude oil and crude-oil products unpredictable at the present time.

The properties of tailings that emanate from laterite nickel processing plants are significantly different to most other mine tailings. They typically comprise a mixture of fine materials that are made up of altered clays, chemical residues and salts. Neutralisation processes that are undertaken prior to tailings discharge result in a high proportion of gypsum in the tailings. The salinity of the pore fluid is commonly higher than 140 g/L of salts, dominated by magnesium sulfate. Hydraulically-placed tailings that undergo solar evaporation typically reach dry densities of less than 1 t/m3 of insoluble solids. In situ water contents after many months of drying may be as high as 80 per cent, and peak undrained shear strengths are unlikely to be greater than 20 kPa.This type of material is not conducive to upstream raising, from both a practicality and overall slope stability perspective. Even at rates of rise of less than 1 m/a, it is difficult to effect upstream raising on unaltered laterite nickel tailings. However, the authors have successfully designed and implemented upstream-raised laterite nickel tailings storage facilities. The upstream raises have been formed from both imported natural materials and air-dried and compacted tailings borrowed from the tailings beaches.Drying and associated strength gain has been achieved through various means of mechanical intervention, repeatedly exposing a zone of tailings to the atmosphere for evaporation. Field trials have been undertaken to optimise the approach, and the findings from the trials have been implemented in practice to allow stable upstream raises to be constructed. All methods of deep foundation construction present challenges to the contractor and engineer that vary according to the method employed, and the geotechnical conditions in which it is being used. Augered-Cast-In-Place (ACIP) piles are generally regarded as one of the most challenging, because the construction method precludes the use of traditional shaft inspection and quality control techniques. Application of Nondestructive Test (NDT) methods can provide quality control for ACIP shafts that traditional methods cannot, but each NDT method has limitations. These make some NDT methods unsuitable for use on ACIP shafts, and may limit the effectiveness of others, depending on geotechnical conditions. To help contractors and engineers working with ACIP piles select the test method most appropriate to specific site conditions, this paper presents a summary of the major NDT methods currently available, and reviews their capabilities with respect to the unique conditions presented by ACIP pile construction. Case histories illustrate how a combination of careful method selection, skilled data interpretation, and experienced engineering judgment have resolved problems and ensured quality in foundation construction by discriminating between potentially serious defects, and those that are unlikely to be significant.

Mines operating close to communities face growing challenges, especially with their drilling and blasting activities. Proper management of environmental and community impacts is critical to provide sustainability to the mining business in the long-term, by enabling the licensee to operate. This paper will present new technology solutions to minimise the impacts to communities and the environment from blasting operations. A case study of the wireless initiation projects conducted at Kinross Morro do Ouro Mine (located in Paracatu, Minas Gerais – Brazil), will be presented. Focused on overcoming the complex challenges in the mine, Orica and Kinross searched for initiatives to optimise the drilling and blasting operations. The team evaluated the WebGen™ wireless initiation system for controlling environmental impacts as well as operational flexibility and productivity. Since January 2023, three planned wireless blasts to demonstrate the technology and applications were executed. In the tests, the vibration level was able to be maintained lower than the limit of 3.0 mm/s while dust and flyrock impacts were well controlled. The main benefits of using this technology for the Morro do Ouro Mine are: reducing the number of blasts while increasing the blasted mass per month; control of projection of fragments using additional cover; dust control by watering the bench easily; lightning initiation risk reduction due to the absence of wires or tubes on the surface; flexibility in changing the blast day to better control the noise and dust; flexibility in mine planning mining (potential application in the future). The use of the WebGen™ wireless initiation system, enables improved productivity while enhancing safety and reducing impacts to communities. Implementation of this technology has enabled Kinross Morro do Ouro Mine to build trust with its neighbours, maintain the license to operate, and helping to mobilise resources in a sustainable way. This has allowed Kinross to position Morro do Ouro Mine as a world reference operation, especially in relation to innovation, safety, and social responsibility.

"This paper discusses how Bald Mountain Gold Mine (Ely, NV) dramatically reduced mercury production by treating process solutions with a liquid reagent based on organic sulfide chemistry. Cherokee Chemical Co. Inc. (Vernon, CA) markets this reagent as UNR 81 1A.A summary of the bench tests comparing various reagents is given. The ensuing plant trial is discussed and successful mercury removal results are presented. Data is presented to show that early removal of mercury in the process reduces the amount of mercury collected at retort. Data is also presented to show that use of this reagent does not reduce gold recovery. Plant trial treatment costs are discussed. Finally, the potential of this technology to substantially reduce closure costs as compared to traditional mercury removal options is discussed.INTRODUCTIONBald Mountain Mine produces gold. Mercury is a costly by-product of gold production because no revenue is generated from mercury. Traditionally, mercury leaches out with gold and follows the gold throughout the processing circuit until it is eventually condensed and collected at Retort. Minimizing or eliminating mercury production minimizes worker health and safety risks, minimizes environmental liability, and reduces costs. In the long term, minimizing mercury production will make mine closure easier and less costly.Bald Mountain Mine dramatically reduced mercury production by treating process solutions with liquid reagents called UNR 811 and UNR 811A. Several reagents were bench tested before proceeding with a plant trial. The reagent complexes the mercury to form an insoluble organic sulfide precipitate. In independent tests, the precipitate passed acid mobilization tests and is considered stable."

One of the most important factors leading to the success of a cement plant is its location. A multicriteria decision-making method is used to rank alternative plant locations. The set of criteria is established and corresponding criteria should be established for each case study, although this multicriteria decision-making approach has broader applicability. In this paper, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) with 5 criteria is used to develop a location evaluation hierarchy for an alumina?cement plant in East Azerbaijan province of Iran. Five alternatives for the plant location are evaluated. The main criteria are transportation, water supply, power supply, fuel supply and land. Other criteria have the same importance as these five alternatives. The alternatives are ranked by a multicriteria method and the best site is proposed. Rare earth elements (REEs) and their compounds are essential in a multitude of mundane and sophisticated applications such as renewable energy technologies, catalysts, medicine, and defense applications. The global supply deficit could be attributed to the destabilization of REE market that has, as a result, incentivized indigenous production of REEs. Cost-effective and environmentally benign opportunities are being explored for the production of REEs from non-conventional mineral sources including coal and coal by-products to stabilize the supply chain. Coal from Healy coal mine and Wishbone Hill deposits in Alaska have been quantified for REEs and were found to possess elevated total REE concentrations as compared to world average levels (60– 70 ppm). The objective of the study was to concentrate the REEs in the froth phase by froth-flotation of the fine size fraction (< 75 μm). A Box-Behnken design of experiment was employed to ascertain the main and interaction effects of operational parameters on response variable by analyzing 3D response surfaces. Experiments were carried out to maximize REE recovery and concentration by modeling and optimization of three operating variables (frother dosage, pulp density (% solids), and collector dosage). Based on the results, the optimum flotation conditions for maximum recovery at an elevated concentration of REEs in the froth fraction was obtained at 4.2% solids and 32.7 ppm of frother dosage for Healy sample and 10% solids and 37.9 ppm of frother dosage for Wishbone Hill coal sample. The quadratic relationship between the input and response variable was found to be independent of collector dosage suggesting good surface hydrophobicity and floatability of the two coal samples.

The trail blaster is faced with a wide range of workrelated challenges, not the least being the work setting itself. It is usually remote, being anywhere from 5 to 30 or more miles (8 to 50 km) from any road. It may be in mountains, high rock desert, or coastal rain forest, and can range from sea level to over 12,000 feet (3700 m) in elevation. The blaster may be part of a 2-person clearing crew, a 4-person maintenance crew, or a 10-person construction crew. The crew will usually be mobile, moving and working up to 10 miles (16 km) or more per day, relying mostly on their own backpacks to move camp, tools and supplies from site to site. Periodic resupply may be by helicopter, aird rop, or even “sherpa” groups, but most often will be by packstrings of horses and mules. The crew goes into the backcountry a n y w h e re from two weeks to three months at a time, and while there, its members “live the job” 24 hours a day, enjoying baking heat, torrential rain or mid-July s n o w s t o rms along with the truly glorious weather that c o m p e n s a t e s . So who is this blaster? Well, “he” may be she, since some of the top trail blasters are women. He/she will also be more than a blaster: Crews are small, so experienced members must be capable of handling the full range of trail work. Thus this blaster is also a driller, and usually also a bucker, snag faller, rigger, dry-stone mason, log and timber carpenter, bridge builder, mule p a c k e r, small-engine mechanic and, not least, camp cook capable of putting out a hot meal from a campfire , in a downpour, in the dark. Being in remote locations, often without reliable communication to the outside world, trail crews enjoy a remarkable degree of independence from “supervision.” With that comes the responsibility to make sound decisions which expedite the work, while promoting crew safety and welfare .
