The economic success and growth of any metropolitan region depends on mobility. Today, mobility between New Jersey and New York is threatened by a transportation system that cannot meet 21st century travel demands. The transportation bottleneck created by the Hudson River threatens the viability of one of the world?s great centers of commerce and culture. Fortunately, there is a solution: The Access to the Region?s Core Mass Transit Tunnel. The US$8.7-billion Mass Tran-sit Tunnel?s (MTT) new two-track line will double commuter rail capacity under the Hudson and create a new, state-of-the-art cavern station in Midtown Manhattan, with wide platforms, high-speed escalators and other features to improve riders? travel experience. The capacity and other benefits of the MTT project will launch a new era of prosperity for the region, just as the Pennsylvania Railroad did almost 100 years ago when it built the existing two, single-track rail tunnels that now form the sole commuter rail link between New Jersey and New York. The existing tunnels run from North Bergen, NJ, under the Hudson River to Pennsylvania Station at 33rd Street in Manhattan. Construction on the MTT, the largest public works project in the United States, is scheduled to start this year and continue through 2017. The MTT is ready to go to construction thanks to a major commitment of financial, engineering, project management and other resources from NJ TRAN-SIT, New Jersey?s statewide mass transit agency, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a bistate agency that operates the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, the George Washington Bridge and other major transportation facilities in New York and New Jersey. The project is also strongly supported by the state governments of New York and New Jersey, as well as that of New York City. The MTT is New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine?s number one transportation priority.

Ion exchange technologies and processes are proven and established technologies widely used in numerous industries including hydrometallurgy for metal separation and recovery from metal bearing solutions. They have evolved through innovation which includes the development of countercurrent multistage (or multivessel) ion-exchange contactor systems with the benefit, for industrial operations, of greatly reduced footprints and ion-exchange media inventories, as compared to more traditional fixed bed contactor systems. Information on procedures for design and sizing of countercurrent multistage ion-exchange contactor systems is not readily available since it is most often proprietary know-how. The purpose of the present work is to develop a simple and innovative approach for the sizing and modeling of industrial countercurrent multistage ion-exchange contactor systems. The suggested approach builds upon published results and upon the following observation: in an industrial setting, knowledge of how component concentration or load on a contactor output streams vary with time t within a cycle duration (0 < t < T) is generally of little interest, only knowledge of time average of such concentration or load over a cycle duration T is sought for. The presented approach will be tested against current or past performances of industrial countercurrent multistage contactors of Orano Mining operations such as SNK‑3M moving packed bed contactors in Kazakhstan and NIMCIX fluidized bed contactors in Namibia.

To the members of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy We have audited the annual financial statements set out on pages 269 to 276. These financial statements are the responsibility of the Institute?s Council. Our responsibility is to report on these financial statements. We have conducted our audit in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. These standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance that, in all material respects, fair presentation is achieved in the financial statements. The audit included an evaluation of the appropriateness of the accounting policies, an examination, on a test basis, of evidence that supports the amounts and disclosures included in the financial statements, an assessment of the reasonableness of significant estimates, and a consideration of the appropriateness of the overall financial statement presentation. We consider that our auditing procedures were appropriate in the circumstances to enable us to express our opinion presented here. In our opinion these financial statements fairly present the financial position of the Institute at 30th June, 1999, and the results of its operations for the year then ended in conformity with generally accepted accounting practice.

Hydrogen and carbon monoxide reduction data were obtained on pelletized materials of the type currently being prepared commercially in Australia.Pellets, approximately 1 cm diameter, made from Deepdale, Iron Prince, and Mt. Newman iron ore were reduced by hydrogen over the temperature range 500&#176;-900&#176;C and the reduced pellets were examined by thermogravimetric, microscopic, electron probe, and x-ray techniques. After an initial time delay it was found that up to 95 per cent reduction the data could be described by a porous model where gaseous diffusion through the solid is rate controlling. Independent measurements of effective diffusivity supported the values obtained from the reduction data. Above 95 per cent reduction the rate decreased markedly due to the formation of retained wustite or fayalite.Comparison with reduction by carbon monoxide over the temperature range 750&#176;-900&#176;C showed that the rate of reduction was approximately five times slower than for reduction by hydrogen.The rate of reduction was found to be a function of the initial properties of the pellets which may account for the widely conflicting results that have been obtained with previous investigations on porous pellets.

The safe operation of gas transmission pipelines is increasingly coming under the spotlight. Increasing environmental pressure is also forcing pipeline owners and operators to ensure the integrity of their pipelines. The integrity of a pipeline is usually determined using intelligent pigging, often referred to as In Line Inspection (ILI). However, in many cases, gas pipelines cannot be pigged for a variety of reasons. The National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) has recently published Recommended Practice (RP) 0502, referred to as the External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) Methodology to assist pipeline owners with assessing the condition of pipelines that cannot be pigged. 2. External Corrosion Direct Assessment - NACE RP 0502 The ECDA Methodology is conducted in four phases as follows: ? Pre-Assessment ? Indirect Inspection ? Direct Examination ? Post-Assessment In the Pre-Assessment Phase, all the relevant historical and current data relating to the pipeline in question is reviewed. This covers pipeline, construction, soils/environmental, corrosion control and operational data. The aim of the Pre-Assessment Phase is to determine whether ECDA is feasible, and if so, to define the ECDA Regions and finally to select the Indirect Inspection Tools that will be used for each region. As part of its mining health and safety research program, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a longwall methane emission and mining time study at a mine operating in the Pittsburgh Coalbed to access the methane emission consequences of mining a longer face. The methane emission contributors from the mining of a longwall face are: 1) gas released from the coal broken by the shearer, 2) gas emitted from the coal on the face conveyor, 3) gas emitted from the coal transported on the belt, and 4) background gas emitted from the coal face and from the adjoining ribs. Based on the results of the study, a set of site-specific mathematical formulas and constants were developed to characterize each of the four longwall emission contributors. The mathematical formulas were then applied to longer longwall face mining scenarios to predict the methane emissions from these faces.

Knowing more about an orebody makes it easier to exploit it profitably. Many orebodies are made up of different rock types, alteration zones or mineralogical ensembles: oxides versus sulphides or facies with different metallurgical properties for example. Being able to model the spatial layout of these different facies is vital to good mine planning and management. Kriging cannot be used to generate numerical models of orebodies with complex geometric patterns because it gives too smooth an image. Over-smoothing has the meaning of changing the natural selectivity. Conditional simulations are required to do this kind of model respecting the natural variability: honouring the natural selectivity, dilution and ore loss. Standard geostatistical simulations cannot duplicate many of the complex spatial relationships seen in the earth sciences, such as differently orientated facies, sets of conjugate veins or ore types where certain facies cannot touch. After a presentation of the case study, it will be shown why traditional methods for simulating indicators like the sequential indicator simulations, or the truncated gaussian method, cannot be used to simulate it. Plurigaussian simulations are then introduced and shown to be more powerful than the previous methods in their range of application. This is confirmed by the case study treated; a Chilean copper deposit, for which the plurigaussian simulations are seen to respect the different orientations of the individual facies as well as honouring the facies seen in drill holes, and respecting the proportion of each facies even if this varies in space (e.g. increases or decreases with depth). Laterite projects are found in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. As a result severe meteorological situations accompany such projects, often in regions of high seismic activity and political uncertainty. Frequently, socio-economic development supported by political interest is a major driver for development, while environmental protection imposes numerous stresses on the project. This paper will review and examine the many social, environmental, technical and financial issues that a mining and extraction process is subject to during development. The options that must be evaluated will be discussed in the context of sustainable development. Issues of project standards and cultural impact through to long-term issues such as greenhouse gasses and climate change will be assessed in redirecting project environmental norms. Although a rationale for sustainable project can be developed many long- term uncertainties around issues remain. Tonnage quantities of hafnium metal have been prepared in Kroll-process equipment designed for producing zirconium. Some slight process modifications have been necessary, but overall operation is the same as for zirconium. Hafnium oxide is chlorinated in the presence of carbon and the resultant hafnium tetrachloride reduced by magnesium metal. Byproduct magnesium chloride is removed in a high-vacuum distillation step and the hafnium sponge metal crushed for further use. Arc-melted metal can be forged and rolled to sheet, but the best material produced to date would not be considered cold ductile. INTRODUCTION This investigation is part of the program for the production of pure metals from domestic and foreign ores that has been underway at the Bureau of Mines for several years. It was done in cooperation with the Atomic Energy Commission and the Bureau of Ships.

This is the third report published by the Bureau of Mines concerning the washability of Black Creek coal. Both of the former reports.5/6/ dealt with the Black Creek coal at the Bradford mine, Dixiana, Ala., near the northeastern extremity of the Warrior field, whereas the present report is based on float-and-sink tests of coal from what is presumably the Black Creek bed near the southern extremity of the field. Although the Yolande Coal & Coke Co., owners of the property at Yolande No. 6 slope, consider this opening to be on the Black Creek bed, the authors do not feel that there is as yet positive proof that this correlation is correct. There has been little or no development of the Black Creek bed in the Yolande Basin in the past, and a positive identification of the bed at Yolande No. 6 will have to await further exploration and development. The Yolande No. 6 is an exploration slope 3/4 mile north of Rockcastle, Ala. The slope is approximately 400 feet from top to bottom on a dip of 180. As far as the authors can ascertain, coal has never been produced commercially from the Black Creek bed in the southwestern part of the Warrior field. Exploration work in the past has indicated that the Black Creek coal in this area is extremely friable and high in sulfur. Extreme friability would naturally discourage its use as a domestic and railroad fuel, and high sulfur content would be a disasvantage in its use for coking coal. The present study of this coal has been made with particular reference to sulfur elimination on the assumption that it would make a good coking coal provided enough of the sulfur could be eliminated by washing.

ONE astounding fact in the production of petroleum is the comparatively recent realization by producers that flowing production is the cheapest crude produced. About 1910 or even later, operators actually endeavored to get a producing well to pumping as quickly as possible after completion. A well was not really considered to be completed until it was operating on the pump. Remarkable progress has been made since then. It was not until about 1920 that producers began to take a serious interest in pressures and to think a little about proper methods of handling oil wells. Pressure gauges were installed, and records of pressures maintained, which was quite an innovation. Desultory experiments were made with tubing of different sizes, as well as experiments with placing the bottom of the tubing string at different levels in the well. AMONG the multifarious duties which fall to the lot of a mining engineer it is safe to say that there is none of more fundamental importance than the study of the ore-deposits on which it is thefunction of his profession to operate, inasmuch as the whole business of mining in all its complicated ramifications rests first of all on the existence of something to mine. -When the ore supplies in a mine fail, the enterprise comes to- an end, and nothing, therefore, is of more importance than a thorough understanding of the conditions under which the ore occurs, so that everything possible may be done to open up the mines well ahead of their immediate output requirements, and develop new ore reserves to take the place of that which is raised from day to day. The great aim which the mining engineer has to keep before him in his study of his ore-deposits is to obtain such a knowledge of them that he will have sound grounds for prediction as to how they will behave in parts of the mines which are well beyond the point of the pick. It is on his judgment of probabilities in this respect that mining operations are entered upon, and the more thorough his knowledge of all the factors affecting the problem, the more is the judgmentlikely to be a sound one. The test of any theory is experimental confirmation of the truth of predictions based upon it, and our aim should be to try to perfect our knowledge of the rules governing deposition of ores, so that our theories may prove themselves equal to the task of successful prediction.

Background: A cross-sectional study was conducted in November2001 to establish the prevalence rates of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoea) in a coalmining town in Mpumalanga. Methods: 155 adults were recruited (79 males and 76 females), by holding community meetings, and by door-to-door recruitment. Saliva and urine specimens were collected for the analysis of HIV and STI prevalence, respectively. Results: The mean age for males was 31.35 years (min = 19 yrs and max = 50 yrs) and the mean age of the female participants was31.90 years (min = 17 yrs, max = 49 yrs). The prevalence of HIV was found to be 22.78% [95% CI (14.09?33.59)] in the males vs. 47.37%[95% CI (35.79?55.16)] in the females, [p = 0.001, OR = 3.05, 95%CI(1.49?6.26)]. The prevalence of C. trachomatis was 7.90% [95% CI(2.95?16.39)] in the males vs. 12.86% [95% CI (6.05?23.00)] in the females, p = 0.324. The prevalence of N. gonorrhoea was 3.79%[95% CI (0.79?1.08)] in the males vs. 9.86% [95% CI (4.06?19.26)]in the females, p = 0.137. HIV was significantly associated with C. trachomatis, [p = 0.032, OR = 3.18, 95% CI (1.04?9.72)], but was not significant when stratified by gender. HIV was not significantly associated with N. gonorrhoea (p = 0.072) but it was significantly associated when stratified by gender, p = 0.001 for females. There were no significant associations between HIV and age (p = 0.408), even upon stratification by gender. Conclusions: HIV prevalence in this community is high, and corresponds to national figures. However, the prevalence of STIs is surprisingly low as it would be expected to be high in a migrant population. Although communities are exposed to expanding peer-education activities that encourage behaviour change, the prevalence of HIV in this group. The external urfaces and interiors (as polished sections) of particles of coconut hell and extruded peat activated carbons taken from everal Australian carbon-in-pulp operations were examined with an optical micro cope, a scanning electron microscope, and an electron microprobe.Calcium carbonate (calcite) precipitated from the pulp was the major inorganic material on the external surfaces of the carbon particle, but several ore minerals, including quartz, hematite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and clay minerals were also identified, along with trona, gypsum, a nickel cyanide, and a magnesium salt. Sections of carbon particles showed that calcite was virtually the only introduced inorganic material inside the carbons.It was distributed in the pores and cracks throughout the coconut shell carbon particles but tended to be concentrated in the outer layers of the extruded peat carbon particles. The mechanism of calcite formation and deposition is uncertain. Gold X-ray dot maps showed that gold was distributed through to the centre of coconut shell carbons and to a depth of at least 500 &#181;m in extruded peat carbons. The distribution of gold within the carbon particles was similar to that of calcite.

Wood preservation may be defined as the art of protecting wood from decay. In its broadest sense, however, it includes a much wider field. It might be more properly de-fined as the art of protecting wood from destructive agents, such as decay, insects, marine borers, mechanical wear, etc. The earliest data on record for the preservation of organic bodies is found in Egyptian manuscripts. The bodies which we call mummies were impregnated with antiseptics, of which the principal were natrum (sodium sesqui-carbonate), sodium chloride, and sodium sulphate. After being steeped in the solution, they were subjected to either a boiling or baking process in a bituminous preparation. The first attempts in Europe to preserve timber were made by the Greeks and Romans. They extracted essential oils from the juniper and cypress trees, and either rubbed these oils into the wood they wished to preserve, or bored thousands of small holes in the wood and poured the preservative oil into the holes. The famous statues of Jupiter and Diana were carved out of wood. The ceremony of pouring in the preservative oil by the High Priests was a religious pageant of great importance, of which there are many records.

Interest is increasing in obtaining incremental improvements in mineral recoveries in flotation processes because of changing world economic conditions. Research on collector reagents, long indispensable components in flotation systems may provide the cheapest and simplest route to higher metal recoveries. Sulfhydryl group - containing compounds (-SH) and their salts, e.g., dithiophosphates, xanthates and a few other derivatives are commonly used to promote the flotation of sulfide minerals. Alkyl mercaptans, another class of sulfhydryl compounds, have long been known to have collecting properties but have been relegated to dormancy for one reason or another. This paper reports results from new investigations of alkyl mercaptans, trithiocarbonates, and a petroleum oil with a variety of western domestic and Canadian ores for copper and molybdenum sulfides recovery. Specific opportunities are pointed out to the industry for mineral recovery enhancement through the use of the proper reagent combination.

The current state of knowledge concerning mesothelioma risk estimates is reviewed. Estimates of the risk of mesothelioma exist for the commercial asbestos fiber types chrysotile, amosite and crocidolite. Data also exist on which to assess risks for winchite (sodic tremolite) and anthophyllite asbestos. Uncertainty in estimates is primarily related to limitations in measurements of exposure. Differences in the dimensions of the various fiber types and of the same fiber types at different stages of processing add a further complication. Nevertheless, in practical terms, crocidolite presents the highest asbestos related mesothelioma risk. The risk associated with sodic tremolite (winchite) appears to be similar. In chrysotile miners and millers, the mesothelioma risk has been linked with exposure to asbestiform tremolite. Exposure to chrysotile in a pure form seems likely to present a very low if any risk of mesothelioma. While the majority of mesothelial tumors result from exposure to the asbestos minerals, there are other well established and suspected etiological agents. While a practical threshold seems to exist for exposure to chrysotile, it is unlikely to exist for the amphibole asbestos minerals, especially for crocidolite. To date there is no indication of an increased risk of mesothelioma resulting from non-commercial fiber exposure in the taconite industry. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Reduced workability and flowability of the concrete through the tremie tubes and drilled shaft reinforcement have been identified as the main causes of tremie-concrete drilled shaft concrete defects. This paper discusses two recent case studies of defective tremie-concrete drilled shafts. The defects (soft inclusions, aggregate segregation, and low concrete strength) were primarily caused by the combined effects of the tremie placing sequence, rapid concrete slump loss, and poor passing and blocking characteristics of the approved concrete mix design. The level of detail contained in the drilled shaft specifications varied between projects. However, even when the specifications incorporated several of the more recent recommendations for tremie-concrete placement, the case studies showed that typical provisions for concrete mix proportioning and placement can be further improved to minimize construction defects such as those described in this paper. Based on the findings of the case studies presented, recommendations for the development of more effective specifications are provided. The recommendations include requirements for mock-up testing of proposed concrete mix designs and evaluation of the tremie-concrete placement sequence. Performance of such testing and evaluation would greatly reduce the potential for drilled shaft defects and consequent time and financial burdens associated with them.

The purpose of this report is to describe the work accomplished by Mine Safety Appliances Company under Contract No. H0110845. This contract required the design, installation and testing of a permissible mine surveillance and communication system for the USBM Bruceton experimental mine facility. While much of the design and operational detail of this system can be drawn from the instruction manuals delivered with the equipment, some of it will be repeated here in Volume I for the sake of clarity, but the principal objective will be to report on overall system and subsystem performance and to suggest design alternatives for future consideration. Details of the overall system design will be found in Volume II of this report.
