"Gravity Concentration, the oldest form of Mineral Processing, remains of major importance to the Industry. Current applications of Gravity Concentration are briefly examined.The Paper details one approach to the development of a Gravity Concentration Plant, from laboratory and mineralogical techniques, through Pilot Plant testing, where applicable, to the actual design of the plant.INTRODUCTIONGravity Concentration, once the major method of concentrating minerals has, for much of the twentieth century been regarded, like the dodo bird, as obsolete. However, in more recent years it is enjoying something of a renaissance, and is once again being treated as a useful, economic alternative in the Mineral Processing Engineers' arsenal.An indication of the broad application of gravity concentration is the variety of minerals presently recovered. In Tunisia, the Paleocene-Eocene series has an important socio-economic interest. It contains profitable oil and water accumulations. Moreover, it encompasses phosphate reserves. The present study uses seismic reflection prospection and borehole data for the reconstitution of the Paleocene-Eocene deposit structure in the Jerid area (southwestern Tunisia), a crucial step for the phosphate exploitation. Firstly, lithostratigraphic correlations incorporating water and petroleum wells were established according to different directions for a tentative approximation of the Paleocene- Eocene deposit geometry by following their lateral evolution. To give more details, seismic reflection profiles were interpreted in the second step. The Paleocene-Eocene formations were associated with their corresponding reflectors on the closest seismic profile using the relation of time and depth in petroleum wells. Analysis of lithostratigraphic correlations shows notable variations in the Paleocene-Eocene series thickness and depth. Seismic profile interpretation explains these variations by highlighting different buried tectonic features. The results confrontation reveals that the phosphatic deposit geometry in the Jerid area is mainly influenced by the (1) emergence of the Saharan platform and the Chott northern chain since the Late Cretaceous, (2) syn-sedimentary normal activity of E-W and NE-SW faults during the Paleocene-Eocene epoch, (3) reverse-reactivation of these faults, and (4) major Tortonian folding phase. This study can enormously enhance the Jerid area socio-economic development by presenting useful findings that may orientate the phosphate exploration.

The existing PT Aneka Tambang (Antam) ferronickel smelter located at Pomalaa, Indonesia consists of two RKEF lines with reduction furnaces nominally rated at 17 MW and 18 MW, respectively. The low power densities and heat fluxes allowed both furnaces to operate with falling water film shell cooling systems. The furnace campaigns comprised a 5-yearly cold shut -down for metal taphole area rebuild and a 10-yearlysidewall and hearth perimeter repair. Towards the end of these campaigns the furnaces would typically be operated at below nominal power due to excessive sidewall temperatures. In January 2001 Hatch performed a smelter study which proposed options which indicated the possibility of a single furnace operation for the smelter, elimination of lime addition and transition to shielded-arc operation with associated efficiency and throughput gains. This paper discusses the process of uprating the second?line furnace capability from 18 MW to 32MW following the decision by Antam to implement the recommendations proposed by Hatch. It will cover the development of scaled-up furnace design basis by Hatch and Antam with the enabling application of Hatch cooling and binding technology. To optimise the capital cost and maximise Indonesian supply content and post installation support, the scope was carefully and clearly divided between Hatch and Antam. The challenges, set backs and valuable learning experiences gained during the implementation of the retrofit include; ?The support and re-use of existing roof system and challenges presented in re-use of existing crucible support steel. ?Training and technical assistance for Antam operators to perform refractory and copper cooler installation and maintenance of crucible integrity technologies. ?Hearth integrity during start-up and development of an initial charge and start-up procedure to achieve planned thermal expansion of the hearth prior to bath formation ?Implementation of a sidewall hold-down system within the refractory sidewall due to space constraints ?Existing furnace foundation reinforcement to overcome lateral forces on furnace piers during crucible support steel expansion ?Conversion of an open-loop gravity feed cooling water system to a closed loop pressurised system with integrated emergency gravity feed and backup system ?Existing water treatment system and pumping system improvement and modification to meet copper cooling system requirements ?Integration of the new instrumentation control system designed by Hatch to increase performance of the furnace monitoring system and operation ?Uprate transformer capacity from 25 MVA to 40 MVA to meet with requirement of Shielded- Arc Furnace Operation.

The deposits were formed from low-temperature alteration of pyroclastic rocks. Properties investigated include their cation exchange capacity, swelling capacity, pH, rheological properties, the green and dry compressive strengths, shatter index, wet tensile strength, compactability and permeability. It was found that deposits with abundant opal-CT have poor physical properties. The rheological and swelling properties were found to be influenced by the bentonite grade (smectite content) and the degree of disaggregation of the smectite quasi-crystals. The only deposits of high grade which had good foundry properties were those with no opal-CT. Hydrothermal alteration was detrimental to the physical and chemical properties of bentonites in that it decreased the smectite content and the pH and changed the smectite layer charge and the lattice dimensions

Paper 1: Risk of gastrointestinal cancers from inhalation and ingestion of asbestos, John F. Gamble Selikoff suggested the hypothesis that asbestos exposure is causally associated with increased risk of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers in an early study of insulation workers. In this paper, John Gamble reports on his extensive review and reanalysis studies that address the relationship between asbestos exposure and GI cancers. The purpose of the review was to evaluate the association between asbestos exposure and risks of stomach, colorectal, colon, and rectal cancers separately. Gamble evaluated exposure?response (E?R) relationships using surrogate exposure methods ??because few individual studies of GI cancer have reported exposure? response analyses.?? The principal asbestos exposure surrogates are: (1) the rate ratio (RR) for lung cancer; and (2) the percent of mesothelioma among exposed workers. Analyzing SMRs for GI cancers from individual studies versus the risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma provides crude estimates of E?Rs for asbestos exposure and GI cancer. At Great Boulder Gold Mines Ltd. a number of attempts were made to remove water soluble copper and iron salts from calcined pyritic concentrates but variou~ problems arose and the methods were abandoned.A method of rapid washing has been developed and although some problems still exist a workable process was established which resulted in substantial savings of reagents used for the cyanidation of calcine.INTRODUCTIONIn the Great Boulder flowsheet crude ore is ground in cyanide solution, then thickened, agitated and subjected to two stage filtering. Secondary filter discharge is pulped with flotation circuit water, gassed with sulphur dioxide to precipitate soluble gold and activate pyrite, and after the addition of copper sulphate and xanthate, the pyrite and tellurides are recovered by flotation. Flotation tailings are thickened and pumped to the disposal area and concentrates are calcined in Edwards roasters. Calcine is washed to remove water soluble copper and iron salts and the washings pumped to the flotation section where the copper is used as an activator. The washed calcine is cyanided and returned to the crude ore circuit via the thickeners. Solution for precipitation in the Merrill Crowe is drawn from the crude ore thickeners.Prior to the introduction of calcine washing the calcine contained 7 lb/ton copper of which approximately 60 per cent was water soluble. This type of microscopic investigation, although still in its infancy, has already found practical applications in several different phases of mining activity. The study of the transparent minerals in rocks, by means of the ordinary petrographic microscope, has for long been a very useful supplement to observations in the field, but the opaque minerals, until recently, have had to rest content with a more or less superficial determination with the hand-lens or the blow-pipe. In a great many cases, particularly where the association of metallics has been somewhat complex, this has been entirely inadequate, and the determination of these opaque minerals under the micro- scope, has opened up a new field of scientific investigation that bids fair to surpass, in practical value at least, the micro-scopic determination of the rock-forming minerals. As the details of this kind of microscopy are possibly not entirely familiar to all mining men, it might be well to outline them very briefly before dealing with the practical directions in which this method may be applied. The ordinary petro-graphic microscope, with but one extra attachment, will serve for this work. A small reflecting device, called a vertical illuminator, is inserted immediately above the objective lens. This reflects the light down to the surface of the specimen and from here the light is directed up the middle of the microscope tube to the eye. As it is desirable that the maximum amount of reflection should be secured from the surface of the section, it is first polished and set in a position perpendicular to the vertical axis of the microscope.

Mintek together with Middelburg Steel & Alloys, developed the DC arc furnace process for the production of ferroalloys with the expressed objective of smelting ore fines (<1mm) without the need for agglomeration. In the case of ferrochrome production, the DC arc furnace, being a semi-open bath operation, loses radiant energy directly from the bath to the furnace roof and sidewalls above the melt. This energy loss is reflected in a higher electrical energy usage per ton of alloy than for a submerged-arc operation smelting lumpy ores or sintered pellets. The difference increases still further when pre-heated sintered pellet feed is used in a submerged-arc operation. This shortcoming of the DC arc furnace can however be overcome by preheating the feed to the furnace in a fluidized bed or flash reactor fuelled by cold furnace off-gas. In addition to fluidization and preheating testwork, various preheating flowsheets with associated mass and energy balances have been developed and compared from a techno-economic viewpoint. The three major advantages identified were: a) fluidized beds can preheat ores and fluxes up to 950°C without sticking and defluidizing, b) the open bath DC arc furnace does not require expensive coke or char to maintain the burden porosity and, c) the capital cost associated with the milling, pelletising and sintering plant falls away since ore fines are used directly.

A field method has been devised for rapid determination of heavy minerals occurring in the unconsolidatod beach and dune sands. The method has been proved practical by usage in field evaluations of several hundred beach- and dune-sand samples in the Florida area. The simple equipment required and the techniques involved are described. Other data show that the method is relatively insensitive to variations in the mineralogical content or size distribution of the mixed heavy minerals contained in the samples tested. A modification of this procedure, found to be suitable for plant use in determining the relative purity of heavy-mineral flotation concentrates, is also described. A specific application is determination of the amount of feldspar-quartz in spodumene flotation concentrates. The results of the rapid evaluation techniques closely approximate those obtained by more precise laboratory procedures.

Since the introduction of the Explosives Track & Trace in Europe in 2014 for manufacturers and 2015 for end-users, a lot has changed in all areas of the supply chain and the use of explosives. The regional associations, manufacturers' organizations, and trade associations have proven that it is possible to overcome a hurdle, that looks almost impossible in the beginning, through consistent cooperation. The paper gives an insight into the problems involved in introducing such a requirement, identifies ways and solutions, and concludes them. When looking at the current situation, the paper describes the process by which a prescribed change in business processes are transforming into a solution that increases productivity, security, and handling.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report describes various fire-fighting resources available to the mining industry and examines the fire preparedness of four western coal mines. Information regarding fire-fighting equipment indicates that an inadequate maintenance program may cause component failure of fire extinguishers, damage to waterhoses is usually a result of improper care, and foam may be a convenient means of conveying water to the fire. Performance data relative to water nozzles (throw distance) and specific practices to improve the state of preparedness in many of these areas are discussed. Studies also indicated that a high-expansion foam plug, will travel down an entry, with a 1% rise in elevation, 207 m (680 ft) before a plywood stopping separating the generator and plug failed. The advance rate of the foam plug decreased when the entry is dry, requiring more foam concentrate and as the foam spread further down the entry. An examination of the mines showed state-of-the-art monitoring systems were common at the minesites. Fire safety was also stressed, including early detection and rapid response of the miners to evacuate the mine. However, the mines placed little emphasis on performance of water nozzles, or personal protective clothing for the underground firefighters.

Establishment of the Cadia East Panel Cave Stage One (PC1S1) commenced with the firing of the first bell in early 2011. Production began with the completion of the undercut in May 2014. PC1S1 used a post-undercut composed of 114 drawbells covering a footprint area of 73 438 m&#178;. The extraction level is located at a depth of 1200 m below the surface and is based on a 32 &#215; 20 m El Teniente layout. Cave establishment required the construction of multiple conveyor drifts, a large-capacity jaw-gyratory crusher and ancillary ventilation and pumping infrastructure. Preconditioning via hydraulic fracturing and blasting was implemented at various locations of the cave block height. Mine drainage and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, federal and local governments, and the general public. This publication and its companion three volumes are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 24-29, 1994. There were twelve sessions (69 papers) that dealt with mine drainage, including modeling, geochemistry, prediction, treatment, control strategies, characterization, hydrology, and case studies. These sessions comprise volumes 1 and 2. The six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with reclamation and revegetation of disturbed lands are included in volume 3. Volume 4 includes the six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with such topical issues as fires at abandoned mine sites, subsidence, hydrology, mine wastes, and policy. Poster session presentations are represented by 49 papers and 92 abstracts that have been placed in the back of volumes 2, 3, and 4, consistent with the subject of that volume.

Bi was electrorefined from alloys containing 10-90 wt% Pb, together with Cu and Ag as minor impurities, in a basic cell and in a recessed-channel cell with 27.5:72.5 NaCl-PbCl electrolyte at 450-470 degrees C and 10 000-20 000 A/m2. The voltage in the basic cell was as high as 9 V, with some carryover of Bi to the cathode observed, whereas in the recessed-channel cell it was as low as 285-635 mV. Flow patterns observed in a room-temperature model indicated that the recesses provide both static liquid hold-up and good mixing of the alloy, enhancing cell performance in combination with the reduced anode-cathode distance of 0.90 mm. The purity of the resulting anode product is as high as 99.9%

Development of aggregate resources for use in structural concrete has been encouraged in Japan to support infrastructure improvement and national land conservation. Natural aggregate is a valuable resource necessary for sound economic development, and its importance is growing. After completion of aggregate mining projects, planting and afforestation are implemented. But sandy soil in excavation sites is not optimum for the growth of vegetation, and many years are needed before forests are restored. Planting techniques should be improved to support efficient reforestation in a shorter period of time. For this purpose, problems hampering growth of vegetation must to be solved through application of physical and physicochemical techniques to ensure that the environment and the ecosystem will be conserved in project sites.
