For several years, Caraiba Metais S.A. (CMSA) had to stock the arsenic sludge generated from the electrolyte purification process of its tankhouse. The amount stocked · reached approximately 3,500 tonnes, as the effects of its recycling during the smelting process and consequently in the sulfuric acid plant were unknown. Besides, it had as limiting factors the high content of arsenic in the copper concentrates supplied by foreign countries as well as the reduced capacity of the tankhouse's purification plant. The choice for selling the mentioned residue, which generally contains more than 50% of Cu, was attractive, but the environmental policies and regulations had not allowed this option. Other alternatives, such as the production of bicupric arsenic by means of a solvent extraction process or arsenic trioxide, were considered but the economic feasibility was not attractive due to the absence of a domestic market and a poor international market. After a study of the arsenic partition in the metallurgical process, it was verified that the residue could be recycled without causing any operational problems or damage to the environment. To make this possible, the capacity of the purification plant was increased and the way of removing the arsenic sludge from the cells was modified from manual to mechanical, therefore avoiding the direct contact of the workers with this poisonous substance. Moreover, procedures for recycling in the smelter were established and tolerance limits were set for both the smelter and the sulfuric acid plant. The main amount of arsenic to be recycled is released with the smelting furnace off-gas, which is washed during the purification stage of the sulfuric acid plant. The acid water, rich in arsenic, is then treated in the waste plant and the arsenic, in its stabilized condition, is confined in an appropriate area.

Anthracite was used extensively as a fuel in iron metallurgy from 1840 to 1880. In 1874, 226 of the 680 blast furnaces in the United States were operating on anthracite and producing almost one-half of the Nation's pig iron. However, by 1890, railroad expansion, the development of western iron-ore reserves, and the growing use of coke decreased the importance of anthracite as a metallurgical fuel. As a result, the last blast furnace designed exclusively for anthracite use was built in 1891. Because of the increased energy requirements of our expanding national economy, the abnormally high demands during national emergencies, and the proximity of anthracite deposits to eastern steel-producing areas, interest has grown in again using anthracite in iron metallurgy. Estimates of anthracite reserves indicate a 300-yr. supply at a production rate of 30 million tons per year. These large reserves dictate the development of an adequate technology for the use of anthracite by the metallurgical industry.

A processing unit was developed for the complete cleaning of titanium alloy chips. The process uses solvent degreasing, magnetic separation, and anodic solution of nonmagnetic impurities in 10 weight-percent sulfuric acid. Vacuum arc-melted ingots weighing approximately 10 pounds each were prepared from cleaning chips according to ingot specifications.

A recently developed technique for use in collieries is described in which samples of gas of relatively high vitiation value are obtained from points deep within a developing goaf by means of pipes. This technique prevents dilution of small quantities of carbon monoxide by large quantities of fresh ventilation air and eliminates interference from shotfiring gases. By using the technique it should be possible to assign a characteristic ratio of carbon monoxide to oxygen consumed to any district and to predict the onset of heatings.INTRODUCTIONGas analysis has played a vital role in detecting heatings in collieries all over the world. By analysing return air from a district and by calculating the percentage ratio of volume of carbon monoxide found to oxygen consumed (known simply as the "carbon monoxide ratio") it has been found possible, in many cases, to assign a characteristic ratio to a district under consideration. This characteristic ratio serves as an index of the spontan~ous combustion tendency of a goaf area. Any definite and consistent increase in the ratioabove the normal figure· indicates that a heating is developing and hence adequate preparations may be made to deal with the trouble.This ratio technique was developed by Graham (1920-21) who found (Table 1) that the temperature of oxidizing coal was directly related to the ratio obtained from analyses of the effluent gas.Until recently, most attempts to employ a similar technique in collieries working the Greta Seam (N.S.W.) were not successful. "Factors which affect the separation achieved in a hydrocyclone are discussed and illustrated with graphs of some mathematical relationships.Definitions of separation and sharpness include comment on use of elutriation devices.A plea is made for better evaluation of field data prior to their reporting or use in calculations. Methods of evaluation are suggested, with samples of the relevant calculations.An example of the effect of percent solids errors is given, with computer printout and plotted corrected recoveries.INTRODUCTIONThe range of interest in cyclones runs from a simple demand for classification results to a detailed study of published equations defining cyclone characteristics. Probably this group covers as broad a range and, in an attempt to offer something for everyone, I will begin with general operating comments, then move on to more analytical topics. Ideally, an author would compose his paper after the discussion period, when he would have a better idea of the areas of special interest to his audience.Sor'1e of you may share our incurable fascination with classification, especially as performed in cyclones. It is amazing that such a simple device could be in use for more than 20 years and retain as much mystery as it does. Substantial parts of the mystery have been solved but some remains, to keep up our curiosity. There is at least one valid reason: the unusual compactness of this device, which makes internal observation very difficult. What other unit can you think of which performs such a complex separation between particle sizes, shapes and specific gravities at such high capacity? Retention time in a cyclone is typically 3 seconds!Mutual Agreement - In a cyclone, every parameter of geometry and of operation interacts with every other. In an orderly discussion of individual parameters it would be necessary to repeat, in every section, 11 if all other factors are equal"". La seule production de columbo-tantalite réalisée en Côte d?Ivoire est effectuée dans les éluvions et alluvions du gisement d?Issia, localisé au Centre- Ouest de la Côte d?Ivoire. Même si un lien direct avec les roches granitiques est suspecté, aucune attention particulière n?a été accordée à l?étude de la minéralisation primaire en relation avec l?évolution des granites et des pegmatites associées. Ces granites, qui sont en intrusion dans les roches sédimentaires du Protérozoïque inférieur, comprennent : le granite orienté à deux micas (Lobo), le granite orienté à muscovite dominante (Bitapia) et le granite porphyroïde non orienté à muscovite dominante (Issia). Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les pegmatites à Nb-Ta-Be-Li sont liées au granite de type Issia. Les observations de terrain et les analyses sur roche totale des granites montrent que: (1) les trois principaux granites de la région sont de type- S et peralumineux dans leur composition, (2) ils ont été formés pendant la période tardi- à post-Éburnéenne, (3) le granite d?Issia fut le dernier à se mettre en place. Les pegmatites liées au granite d?Issia ont été classées en quatre types : Apegmatites stériles; B- pegmatites à Be; C- pegmatites zonées à Nb-Ta-Be; et Dpegmatites zonées à Be-Nb-Ta-Li. Les pegmatites zonées comprennent les zones suivantes: I- zone à aplite; II- zone graphique; III- zone à albite, microcline, béryl et columbo-tantalite; IV - zone à microcline massive; V- zone à quartz. Ces pegmatites présentent une zone d?altération métasomatique externe. La minéralisation de Ta, Nb et Be est liées à la zone III des pegmatites de types C et D, et celle de Li est associée aux greisens qui peuvent être observés n?importe où dans les pegmatites de type D. Les données de terrain et de laboratoire indiquent que le granite d?Issia est la roche parentale des pegmatites à éléments rares de la région. Les pegmatites minéralisées sont distribuées seulement autour du granite d?Issia et les patrons des terres rares des granites et ceux des pegmatites à éléments rares sont très similaires. Les analyses de la composition totale montrent un lien génétique entre le granite d?Issia et les pegmatites à éléments rares. Il est suggéré que les pegmatites ont été formées durant le transport et la cristallisation fractionnée du magma.

The only economically significant mineral exploited in Banglades - during 1981 was natural gas. Nitrogenous fertilizer production was important to the agricultural sector and was totally dependent on the natural gas for fuel and raw material. Domestic cement plants were also fu pled by natural gas. The flat river-delta terrain for most of Bangladesh makes the potential for discovering major mineral deposits poor. No large deposits of metal ores have been found and only in the small hilly southeastern section of the country is there even much chance of finding any. Heavy mineral sand deposits may eventually be exploited along the Chittagong coastline. There is a good potential for crude oil discoveries. The Bangladesh economy has been heavi¬ly subsidized by billions of dollars of foreign aid since the country's inception. A World Bank report recommended total aid needs of over $2.6 billion in fiscal year (FY) 1980-81. It received commitments for barely over one-half that amount.

"An investigation into pillar cutting was carried out at a platinum mine on the western limb of the Bushveld Complex. The focus was on crush pillar design and implementation in order to ultimately improve the compliance percentage for pillar cutting. The major findings from the investigation suggest that the pillar cutting problem lies with the implementation of the design rather than the design itself. Observations of the practical issues underground that prevent good pillar cutting were made. After these issues had been identified, recommendations to rectify these problems and a few other issues identified during the investigation were provided. The recommendations are aimed at improving the pillar cutting compliance and reducing the likelihood of pillar bursts or pillar runs, which will ultimately create a safer mining environment. "A 2400 acre extension to the existing Tailings Area is under development at Inco's Copper Cliff Milling operations.The new area is being developed in stages as production levels dictate thus minimizing immediate capital expenditures while permitting disposal operations to proceed as further site work progresses.The first stage of the new storage site will be fully operational by early 1987 and will include a 400 acre site specific to the storage of Pyrrhotite rejected from milling circuits. The Pyrrhotite site is located in the centre of the Tailings area and is designed for water cover throughout much of its projected life.The new development incorporates perimeter dams designed to operate with low phreatic levels for maximum structural stability. Acid seepage water is collected behind secondary impermeable dams for return to the Tailings Pond.Tailings are deposited by up-stream methods permitting segregation of coarse fractions for use in future lifts of the perimeter dams."

The paper deals with parametric vibrations of an axially loaded pile. The dynamic model is derived by means of Hamilton's principle and reduced to a partial differen­tial equation with variable coefficients and corresponding initial boundary conditions, taking into account the influence of the axial force. By means of Galerkin's method, the partial equation is further reduced to a Matheu-Hill's matrix partial differential equation of the second order. Since the problem of the dynamic stabili­ty has been expressed only for standing piles, the paper analyses in detail two stan­ding piles, one which is restreined, whereas the other is hinged at the toe. In both cases it is assumed that head horisontal displacement is prevented. Using Ruunge-Kutt's method, a computer analysis in the time domain is given for the characteristic parameters and possible boundary conditions. The paper analyses the stationariness of the process, as well as the dependance of the critical excitation frequency upon the pile parameters. The results have been illustrated by respective diagrams.

The legal issues surrounding the regulation of subsidence are among the major concerns facing the underground mining industry today. Whether subsidence occurs almost immediately as a result of longwall mining or without warning as a result of room and pillar mining conducted years ago, the resulting disputes are highly controversial and typical of the disputes involving the competing interests of surface and mineral estate owners. Until recently, the law governing these disputes was firmly established under the common law. The passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act 1, the utilization of new mining technologies, and the general heightened environmental awareness of our times, however, have interjected new issues into this area of the law. State and Federal court decisions and administrative agency interpretations have helped clarify some of the issues. However, as evidenced by the many recent lawsuits between operators, surface owners, and regulatory agencies, many uncertainties still exist.

"This paper summarizes research into the study of the control of flotation processes based on froth images. The use of numerical image analysis techniques for the extraction of significant patterns (froth structure and colour) from industrial flotation froths is discussed.First, the froth was analysed by the use of the Multivariate Image Analysis (MIA) method to extract the spectral variation contained in a RBG image. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) was applied to develop the empirical model for the prediction of froth grade. The results of this application are illustrated using one industrial case study.Second, the froth was also analysed by Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and Wavelet Transform Analysis (WTA) to extract features related more to morphological aspects. Since there is useful information hidden in froth texture, these methods are used as texture descriptor to classify different types of froths.Third, a control strategy based on a froth structure indicator was developed and implemented on an industrial zinc flotation circuit. The feedback controller uses a reagent flow-rate in order to maintain the froth structure at its set point. Process improvements obtained with the implemented control strategy are highlighted.Finally, the feasibility to implement a hybrid control strategy consisting in a froth structure supervision controller based on the froth concentrate grade estimated by MIA and recovery inferred by image analysis is discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe development of control strategies to achieve satisfactory control performance has always been a great challenge for engineers and the need for improved process diagnosis, control and optimization has become more and more evident for the mineral processing industry in the last decades. That is why new process variables need to be measured particularly in highly multivariable processes such as flotation. This industrial process is subject to a wide variety of disturbances mainly generated by frequent and sometimes abrupt changes in physical and/or chemical ore characteristics and also, due to some irregularities in manual process operating procedures. A flotation circuit scheme is always a complex network of more than two dozens slurry streams. Information about those streams (% solid, metal content analysis and flow rates) is important for process diagnosis performance evaluation and control. IN April of this year the California State Division of Mines (formerly known as the State Mining Bureau) observed its 50th anniversary. The Division serves as a bureau of information and, an encyclopaedia of California's economic minerals. Its primary function is to make economic surveys of the mineral resources of California, their development and utilization. Geological studies also constitute a related part of the work as being necessary in tracing and out- lining ore deposits and the most likely areas in which to find them. The results of the Bureau's data-gathering are published in the form of annual reports of the State Mineralogist, and in bulletins on specific substances. The Division is just completing a series of reports on the mineral resources of the State arranged by counties.. It is now starting .a new series of reports arranged according to substances particularly the so-called non- metallic commercial groups. Of these the following are now available: clays, barite, and mineral paint. These will be followed by reports on feldspar and silica, diatomaceous earth, limestone and others

Marble deposits of dolomitic variety are available in large quantities in India and for extracting these deposits diamond wire saw cutting machine is mainly used. Cutting performance of the diamond wire saw machine depends on rock parameters, machine parameters and operational parameters. Rock parameters related to physico-mechanical properties, such as, compressive strength, tensile strength, shear strength, modulus of elasticity and abrasion resistance of marble play role in determining cutting rate and beads wear rate. Thus, this study was undertaken to determine the relationship between different physico-mechanical properties and cutting performance. This work also aimed at enhancing the cutting performance of diamond wire saw in dolomitic marble deposit. Study was conducted in the field at three different zones having deposit of soft, medium hard and hard dolomitic marble. During the study, cutting rates and wearing of diamond beads were recorded in the field. Physico-mechanical properties were determined in the laboratory. The results obtained were subsequently evaluated by using statistical analysis. Study revealed that these properties of marble play a significant role in the performance of diamond wire saw machine. Predictive equations for the wearing of diamond beads and cutting rate were developed based on regression models. Results of this study will be of ample use for operators of wire saw to achieve maximum cutting performance and for manufacturers in designing the diamond beads.

INTRODUCTION For various reasons I have not specified the locality where the research indicated in the following pages was undertaken. It will suffice to say that it was on the grounds of a villa once remote from, but now completely surrounded by, its neighboring city, and in close proximity to an industrial establishment of great extent and importance manufacturing many kinds of steel articles and employing upwards of thirty chimney-stacks for power and process work. The problem was to discover the cause or causes of the mortality to trees and plants on the place, and to trace these causes to their origin. Before undertaking this experimental work, the bibliography accompanying this paper was compiled and studied. It appears from an examination of the careful scientific work performed by the ablest French, German, and English chemists during the last 25 years that they are unanimous in assigning the principal-in fact, the overwhelmingly predominant-cause of the destruction of vegetation to sulphur oxides, resulting either from direct- oxidation of sulphur in oil of vitriol works, etc., or from the oxidation of the sulphur from the minerals associated with commercial coal. Schröder and Schertel showed in 1884 that the sulphates deposited upon the leaves are not injurious to the plants; and Freytag proved that free sulphuric acid could not be found

The first report covering building materials4/ appeared in December of that year. The present paper, which deals with chemical raw materials and fertilizers, is the second of the series. The 34 years from 1910 to 1943, for which statistics are presented herein, comprise periods of uneventful peace, unparalleled prosperity, industrial depression almost to the point of stagnation, and two wars of world proportions.
