"There has been a revolution occurring in underground mining over the last several years, where big headline items such as the Internet of Things (IoT), optimisation, managing data, data mining etc – the list of current catchphrases, goes on. In the end these are nothing new; but the ‘things’ (sensors) are becoming smaller, cheaper and easier to deploy, and the analysis much more powerful as computer processing speeds increase. However, to take advantage of the myriad of devices out there and gain the processing power to analyse and use the data, a reliable ‘conduit’ is needed for that information to be delivered where it can actually be used. That is, a high quality data network.Modern mining is like any other industry in the information age: the access to reliable data is the first, critical step in improving productivity (Stevens, 2015). The convergence of communications onto an IP (Internet Protocol) backbone has been the driving force in enabling the productivity gains in general industry over the last two decades.This paper overviews how this technology has developed as an enabler in accessing productivity and safety benefits, and how it has used access to large amounts of data to manage mining processes underground. Reams of data are useless, but with the reliable receipt, analysis, processing and feedback system in place to use that data, benefits can be realised.Automated mining systems are increasingly being seen as a key requirement for a productive mining operation, and the importance of an integrated communication network infrastructure to support such systems is growing. Another emerging driver is the much talked about IoT and data analytics, both dependant on reliable, accurate, high volume data.The author will outline how communication infrastructure is fundamental to the operation of such systems, and explain why the resultant communication networks require much more than just increased bandwidth (data capacity) to properly support the automation and other data hungry systems within the overall mine operation.Mining operations embarking down this road are discovering that the required network must be based on a true enterprise level architecture to, not only enable the mine’s current plans for remote or automated mining, but also to provide a scalable and integrated platform for future developments. The emerging issues for the communication network to truly support automation systems include: increased complexities of operating and maintaining multiple networks integration issues with disparate systems problems with reporting, particularly as demands for corporate reporting and compatibility with enterprise systems become the norm ongoing management challenges, which will only increase with the proliferation of new technologies.How certain mining operations lay the necessary foundations to meet their current requirements, while supporting their visions for a more automated and proactively managed mine, will be explored.CITATION:Kent, D, 2017. At least for the time being, these seems to be general but not universal agreement that Mississippi Valley type ore deposits formed entirely or in major proportion from heated connate brines (e.g. 1) Even with that agreement, major questions remain. I will present a coherent geochemical model and look at alternative views in the context of that model. The pattern of the following discussion is 1) the general geochemistry of the ore fluid, 2) the density-temperature relations and possible mechanisms of flow of those fluids, 3) the mechanisms of transportation and deposition of the ore minerals, and 4) a summary of a coherent model of genesis. The data equivocally define much about the deposits. The answer is still elusive.

As a part of a Bureau of Mines program on the conversion of coal to liquid and gaseous fuels, the kinetics of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis on iron catalysts was investigated. Nitrided catalysts were studied at 21.4 atmospheres using feed gases ranging from 2H2+1CO to 0.25H2+1CO, and at 7.8 to 21.4 atmospheres using 1H2+1CO gas. The overall apparent activation energy increased with increasing carbon monoxide content of the feed gas from 19.5 kcal/mole for 2H2+1CO to 23.7 for 0.7H2+1CO. The rate of synthesis with 1H2+1CO feed increased linearly with operating pressure from 7.8 to 21.4 atmospheres. A semifundamental rate equation of the form [r=a'PH2 0.6pco 0.4- ?r0.5PH200.5] was shown to fit the data satisfactorily. The relative usage of hydrogen to carbon monoxide decreased with increasing conversion, passed a minimum, and then increased. Apparently water is the principal primary product and carbon dioxide is produced by subsequent water-gas shift reaction. In another group of experiments water, carbon dioxide, argon, and methane were added to 1H2+1CO feed to a nitrided iron catalyst. Argon and methane were only diluents. Carbon dioxide was a slight inhibitor and water vapor was a strong inhibitor to the rate of synthesis. Water accelerated the water-gas shift and usually increased methane production. Important factors of catalyst geometry in determining rate were found to be particle size and extent of reduction. Apparently the active portion of the catalyst is confined to a layer of 0.01 to 0.02 cm from the external surface of particles. A special solution was made of differential equations relating re¬action at the catalyst surface to diffusion in pores of the catalyst for spherical particles with an active layer surrounding an inert core. The equation derived expressed the experimental data reasonably well. Diffusivities determined by this equation varied from 3 to 24X10-6 cm2/sec; these values are of the same magnitude as observed for the diffusion of gases in liquid. The appendix presents a group of synthesis experiments at pressures of 21.4 to 103 atmospheres. In this range the rate of synthesis on nitrided iron catalysts increased with pressure to the 0.74 to 0.84 power.

This paper is one of a series dealing with mining problems and summarizing the data contained in the Information Circulars on individual mines that have been prepared by the managers or superintendents and published by the Bureau of Mines. The purpose of this paper is to present the problems encountered in the development of an efficient mine organization and to show the means used by certain mining companies in promoting efficiency. There is also a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the various systems of paying and handling labor and a description of their application at the individual mines.

A post grouted drilled shaft foundation system was successfully used in place of the specified driven pile foundation system as a Value Engineering Cost Proposal (VECP) for the new PGA Boulevard Grade Separation Project. Pressure grouting the cohesionless sandy soils at the drilled shaft base significantly increased the end bearing capacity and stiffness allowing drilled shafts to be the more cost effective foundation system. The post grouted drilled shaft option also provided other benefits including reducing owners risk normally associated with pile driving vibrations and offered a high level of quality assurance for the drilled shafts. This paper discusses the implementation of post grouted drilled shafts from design to completion of construction. A design procedure for post grouted drilled shafts developed by the University of South Florida was used for initial VECP evaluation. Prior to construction, two instrumented test shafts were installed and load tested, one of which was post grouted. Therein, the design procedure was calibrated, tip elevations for production shafts were refined, drilled shaft construction and grouting procedures were demonstrated, and a grouting criteria was developed for the project.

Amongst representative men directing alluvial mining of erations in Victoria, some difference of opinion exists as to the best system of working the deep leads. The developmental operations of shaft-sinding, extending a reef drive, partially watering and rising up into the wash dirt are practically the same on all fields but subsequent mining is continued either on the Chiltern and Rulberglen or Ballarat systems, the latter being referred to by the Chiltern and Rutherglen miners as the "down country" system. In the former, the leading wash and cross drives are lept from 300 to 500 feet ahead of the reef drive, and in the latter the reverse method keeping the reef drive well ahead of all wash workingsis adopted.In the majority of alluvial mines in the southern and western fields, the initial work of defining the course of the lead is costly, owing to the thick superincumbent layers of hard basalt, to bore which costs from 9/- to 15/· per foot. Unfortunately large sums of money have been wasted in this work, owing to a want of care and knowledge in the selection of bore sites, and improper recording of the strata pierced, thus handicapping alluvial mining and bringing boring operations...

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Oxygen isotope analysis indicates that quartz, carbonates and muscovite could all have formed in near-isotopic equilibrium with the mildly saline H2O-CO2 ore fluid at 330 degrees C. Calculated values for O, C and S in the ore fluids imply derivation from a deep, homogeneous source region and are consistent with formation either as a direct or an indirect result of igneous processes. Values for delta-O18 plot a little outside the accepted magmatic range, but have almost certainly been modified by exchange reactions with wall rocks. These reactions were also the most likely cause of deposition of the ore constituents. The chemical and isotopic character of the fluid was similar to that in many Archaean and later mesothermal auriferous vein systems, especially the Mother Lode region of California. BHP Hartley Platinum operates an electric smelting furnace to treat Cu-Ni-PGM concentrate at its plant in Selous, Zimbabwe. The furnace, originally built by others, has experienced problems including severe refractory erosion of the sidewall. Hatch Associates has designed several important improvements to the furnace, including: ? water-cooled copper cooling elements in the slag zone ?air-cooled copper cooling fins at the metal level ?water-cooled copper tapholes ?binding system providing vertical refractory compression ?electrode seals ?new feed pipes Novel construction techniques employed on this project to reduce shutdown duration are discussed.

Double rotary drilling combines continuous flight auger drilling with a casing for producing a cast-in-place pile. When producing a pile an outer casing and an auger (hollow auger) rotating inside the casing are driven into the ground in counter-rotation. The outer casing serves to support the surrounding soil and the inner auger excavates the drilling cuttings to the surface inside the casing. After reaching the projected drilling depth concrete is pumped through the hollow stem of the auger and outer casing and auger are extracted. After their complete extraction a reinforcement cage can be inserted in the fresh concrete. Compared to Kelly drilling the double rotary drilling method offers numerous advantages, including, for comparable diameter and length, shorter production times and higher accuracy (pile inclination and excess concrete) combined with increased occupational safety and lower noise emissions. Moreover, pile tests have proved that piles produced by double rotary drilling feature higher axial load-bearing capacities than comparable piles produced by Kelly drilling. This article offers an overview of the basic theoretical principles of double rotary drilling lists the required and currently available machinery and, finally, discusses the results and conclusions of a current jobsite.

Since the advent of the first airborne electromagnetic system, it has been evident that such systems were inherently limited to shallow depths of exploration of the orderof 100 to 200 feet. Hence in 1948 the author and his associates commenced a study of the feasibility of applying natural audio frequency magnetic fields to investigation of the electrical properties of the subsurface in order to provide a system capable of overcoming this limitation. This research culminated, in the summer of 1958, in the development of a new airborne prospecting device — AFMAG. This device has detected surface massive sulphide bodies while flown at heights as great as 3000 feet. Hence, by inference, it is deduced that it could find similar sulphide bodies if they were buried 2500 feet below surface and the aircraft flown at 500 feet. Thus a considerable improvement over conventional airborne electro-magnetic systems is obtainable with AFMAG. Airborne exploration in mountainous terrain involving deep valley fill now becomes possible. Examples are presented of the results of actual airborne AFMAG test surveys over known deposits of massive sulphide mineralization. Interpretation of the data is discussed with particular reference to the knowledge of size, dip, depth, depth extent, and conductivity of causative bodies as deduced from the flight records. The possibility of mapping major geologic structures, for both mining and oil exploration purposes, is discussed with the aid of examples of airborne AFMAG data. INTRODUCTION Electrical prospecting with natural audio frequency electromagnetic waves as a source has, within the last three years, become a practical reality. Both airborne and ground survey instruments under the trademark "AFMAG" (for audio frequency magnetics) have been used successfully in the search for conductive mineral deposits. It is the object of this paper to discuss the principles of airborne AFMAG and to illustrate its application by means of examples obtained over known geological situations. WHY AFMAG? In view of the large number of good airborne electromagnetic systems available for purchase or contract surveying, one may well ask, "Why another new system?". Primarily the answer lies in the fact that AFMAG does not suffer from the very limited depth of exploration available with, and inherent in, any conventional airborne electromagnetic system. AFMAG is not conventional insofar as an artificial transmitter is not required. Only a receiving and detecting device is employed. The electromagnetic fields measured are those from millions of electrical discharges in the atmosphere (e.g;..- lightning strokes). Their random distribution in time and space make these fields difficult to employ and it is only with recent advances in the electronics of geophysical instrumentation that this has become possible. "The El Mochito Mine located in Honduras, Central America, has produced lead, zinc and silver in concentrates since the 1950s. The paper discusses changes made in both lead and zinc circuits to reduce costs while maintaining production during the recent period of low metal prices.The intent of this paper is to show that sometimes thinking “outside the box” is beneficial for progress. Also, in striving for better metallurgical results we should not forget the basics of flotation. Sometimes the latest trends may not be applicable to the ore we are treating and may not meet the operating cost constraints.A major beneficial impact on El Mochito metallurgy was achieved when the overall grind was coarsened, eliminating the significant percentage of slimes. Switching from two parallel twostage grinding circuits to one circuit with three-stage series grinding has resulted in a significant reduction in power and steel consumption. With minor layout/reagent modifications, both lead and zinc circuits gained not only in retention time but as well in producing better grade products.Of course, the challenges are still there; they exist and only with the full support of operational data collection and metallurgical laboratory investigation success can come. That is why, we as professionals, can never stop in trying to make the most of what we have.INTRODUCTIONThe El Mochito Mine is owned by American Pacific Honduras S.A. de C.V. (AMPAC) a subsidiary of Breakwater Resources Ltd. Of Toronto, Canada. The mine is located in western Honduras, approximately 220 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Tegucigalpa and 90 kilometers south of the country’s second largest city, San Pedro Sula. The mine began operating in 1948 and to date has produced more than 19 million tonnes grading 240 g/t Ag, 3.5% Pb and 7.4% Zn. Production in 2005 was 700,190 tonnes grading 87 g/t Ag, 1.85% Pb and 6.61% Zn.Decreasing metal content in the ore followed by the lowest zinc price on the market in the last 15 years (see Figure 1) has reduced the cash flow and endangered to stop the operation."

Em função das condições desejadas no processamento do aço no Forno Elétrico a Arco (FEA), a escória final tem teor elevado de FeO, contém fósforo e pode ter, ainda, alto teor de alumina. Para controlar o consumo de desoxidantes, formar uma escória adequada no forno panela (FP) e evitar a reversão de fósforo, é importante minimizar a passagem da escória do FEA para a panela, no vazamento. Assim, é essencial conhecer a quantidade de escória passante para o controle e previsão adequados do processamento no FP. Neste trabalho é apresentada uma metodologia para, através de um balanço de massa levando em conta medidas de composição realizadas durante o processo, determinar a quantidade de escória passante e o volume de escória no final do processamento no FP. É empregado um método numérico simples e demonstra-se que os resultados obtidos são suficientemente adequados para melhor conhecimento e controle do processo por parte do engenheiro responsável, possibilitando gerar informações precisas para cálculos de correções (exemplo: formulação de uma nova escória sintética, correção de desgaste de refratários, ajuste de basicidade, etc.).

According to the Markowitz portfolio theory the value of a diversified portfolio is higher than the sum of the parts of a portfolio, which is an important consideration for the correct valuation. This is valid for real estate portfolios as well as for mining assets (or enterprises). This paper analyses the application of the portfolio theory to a diversified portfolio of assets in the real estate industry and draws conclusions on further research work to be done in the minerals industry. The volume of real estate transactions is increasing over recent years. As such, the nature of those transactions is constantly changing and in some cases portfolios become more heterogeneous as they are composed of different property categories, e.g. locations and types of use. This makes their economic evaluation more difficult. This paper focuses on the acquisition of a fairly heterogeneous real estate property portfolio purchased by “Commerz Real” in Germany in Q4 2019. For economic evaluation the widely used Markowitz portfolio theory (Markowitz, 1952) was applied. It was investigated whether diversification effects could achieve added value in the form of a reduction in risk compared to the sum of their individual components. As a result the findings of this research could be applied to other heterogeneous real estate transactions and even to mine property portfolio or PPP1 project portfolio transactions.

This paper follows a student’s interest in explosives which began at an early age after watching a television program highlighting explosives engineering. The use of explosives in those programs led to curiosity about how one gets involved in the industry. These programs enticed the author to further investigate the explosives industry leading him to an explosives camp for high school students. After attending the camp, this passion further developed into postsecondary education.

The Theory of Sampling (TOS) has made remarkable strides and has witnessed a suite of achievements over its ~65-year history; especially in the last 15 years, since organised work began for the erstwhile fragmented sampling community (2003). Theory and practice have been very well exposed and disseminated, as witnessed in the successful series of the World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB) events and other dedicated sampling and mining conferences in Australia and South Africa. At this WCSB8 occasion we fittingly devote a section of our conference to celebrate the life and monumental achievement of Pierre Gy, the originator of the Theory of Sampling; a special issue of TOS Forum was recently published to the same purpose. But TOS is most emphatically not a finished work.Here I try to look into the future with a personal view: TOS – what’s next? Commensurate with this objective there is offered some out-of-the-box thinking. The purpose is to try to zoom in on probable additional future aspects of TOS and its application compared to the first 15 years of our common journey. There are bound to be lacunae here-and-there across the vast application horizon delineated, which is as it should be, as this lecture is meant to initiate a broad(er) debate – and readers may agree with all, parts, or none of the topics presented. Let’s start off with your assessment of the mining industry. Today, the status of the mining industry is stronger than it has been over the previous few years. While mining continues to be a major part of the world’s economic foundation, the industry is gaining strength due to rebounding metals and minerals prices. And now, with these rising prices and the changes the industry instituted during the years when mining-related commodities were selling at low prices, our stronger, more productive and internationally competitive industry should flourish. Mining remains an essential business and the industry is far ahead of the game when it comes to the trend of globalization as a key to sustained growth. Also, the industry continues to realize increased productivity through technological innovations. And an increasing number of countries are moving towards capitalism, which opens doors for exploration and mining within their borders. After looking at all of these factors, I believe that the mining industry will only continue to gain momentum in the future.
