The Midas epithermal system is one of the larger low-sulfidation epithermal vein systems discovered in the western US in recent years, containing in excess of 3 Moz of gold (premining). The deposit is spatially and temporally related to bimodal volcanism in the Northern Nevada Rift; dates on igneous rocks (16 - 14.7 Ma) bracket the age of high grade veins (15.3 Ma). Hydrothermal alteration at Midas is typical of epithermal systems, comprising proximal potassic through distal propylitic assemblages; in contrast to many epithermal systems, Midas has minimal development of wallrock illite/sericite. Mineral assemblages are clearly zoned on the vein structures that acted as focal planes for fluid upflow. Geochemical zoning patterns also show this zoning. Metals were deposited in open-space veins as the result of boiling of hydrothermal fluids; multiple episodes of crustiform mineral deposition are documented in the vein textures. The major vein minerals include quartz, adularia, calcite, selenides and sulfides, with electrum as the primary ore mineral. REE patterns for vein material are similar to patterns for coeval rhyolites, but distinctly different from patterns of the host rocks. Stable isotope data are consistent with meteoric water as the dominant ore fluid. Combined REE and stable isotope data suggest that fluid from which the main ore-bearing stage of the veins was deposited was slightly lower pH than other stages.

The recent introduction of polymer geogrids for ground control purposes in underground mines allows mine operators more flexibility in choosing improved products for several applications. This is evidenced most clearly in longwall recovery operations. Since November, 1994, many mine operators have chosen Fortrac geogrid assemblies for the purpose of securing longwall recovery areas prior to shield removal. Fortrac is a lightweight, strong, and flexible polyester geogrid available in many strengths. Utilizing the "diamond" seaming method, different strengths of Fortrac geogrids are easily fastened together so stronger geogrids may be placed in the most critical areas and lighter geogrids in less critical areas.

"ABSTRACTThe paper addresses the application of automated monitoring, control, and navigation to improve dragline performance. SummaryImproving dragline performance in the Canadian coal mines is critical to the continued success of the industry. Draglines represent a large capital investment and coal prices are low by historic standards. This paper argues that the introduction of monitoring, control, and navigation on draglines offers an opportunity to significantly reduce a dragline’s operating cost per cubic metre moved. To place the importance of this in perspective, a North Dakota mine calculates that every 1% increase in dragline productivity means a savings to the mine of US$340,000 per year. MonitorsAutomated dragline monitoring is a well established technology with commercial products available since the early 1980s. The three main reasons for placing monitors on draglines are (Walker, 1993):1. productivity increases: reduce variations between different operators’ performance across different shifts;2. quality increases: increase the percentage of ore and waste loads that go to the correct destination; and3. special projects (engineering projects): justify installing static field exciters and regulator upgrades; implement power management; aid operator training; study high performance buckets, rigging changes, and various excavation sequences.Mines as diverse as Kennecott’s Cordero- Rojo Complex in the United States and Natal Coal Corp.’s Optimum Mine in South Africa report dragline productivity increases of 10% to 20% in the region attributed to the implementation of dragline monitoring."

"The diversification of energy sources in the United States has seen some major shifts during the past decade resulting from:• A sudden abundance of low-cost natural gas becoming available through advanced horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques.• Incentive-driven policies leading to new development in alternative energy.• The emergence of alternative energy sources proliferated as a result of state and federal level incentives and falling capital costs.Coal was once recognized as the primary low-cost fuel source for the generation of electricity in the United States for most of the last century, providing upward of 50 percent of the total generation capacity during much of that period. However, within the past decade, lower-cost natural gas has overtaken coal as the primary source of fuel used in electricity generation, and alternative sources have steadily grown to now account for approximately 10 percent of the overall mix.West Virginia and Kentucky have not experienced the full breadth of the fuel shift, and, as of 2016, still obtained approximately 80-90 percent of electric power generation from coal. However, as coal plants are retired, there has been a shift toward natural gas for new power plants constructed in the region. The economics of power generation (i.e., lowcost fuel source) has typically been the major factor in determining shifts from one fuel source or technology to another. However, governmental energy policies and incentives have more recently been used to promote the development of new alternative technologies such as wind and solar energy growth to diversify the energy mix. The implementation of these incentives has provided some needed traction and resulted in driving the cost of manufacturing and installation of these new wind and solar systems downward to be more cost competitive with conventional fossil-fueled power sources. Future shifts in the generation capacity by fuel type will also be inevitable and impossible to project accurately as policies change and innovative technologies evolve. Determining factors may include the expiration of current incentives, decreasing capital costs, future environmental regulations, evolution of energy storage systems, technical challenges associated with increasing intermittent sources of generation and the development of unforeseen technologies. West Virginia and Kentucky have been among the least solar friendly states, ranking 44th and 48th of the 50 states (Fig. 1 for WV). The New Jersey Zinc Co. successfully holed through a 2 1/2-mile haulage tunnel connecting its new Ivanhoe shaft with the Van Mater Shaft at Austinville, Va. This 8x 10-ft cross-section tunnel was driven from both ends and met at a point approximately a mile from one shaft and a mile and a half from the other. In order to make certain that the faces met accurately on line and grade it was necessary to refine conventional mine surveying practices. The mines that are serviced by these shafts are located in the southwestern part of Virginia approximately midway between Roanoke and Bristol at the west foot of the Blue Ridge. While the presence of lead-zinc sulfide ores has been known in this area for more than 200 years, it was in 1902 that New Jersey Zinc Co. acquired the Austinville property, which has been in constant operation since that time. About ten years ago the company undertook an extensive diamond drilling program at Ivanhoe several miles to the southwest. This program was successful in locating sufficient ore to justify the purchase of a number of the properties in this area and plans were made to develop the new orebodies. The discovery of this ore as well as substantial addi- tional reserves at Austinville resulted in a decision by the company to increase its daily milling capacity to 3000 tons, of which about 1000 tons would be supplied from the Ivanhoe mine. After careful consideration of all possible methods of transporting this volume of ore from Ivanhoe to the mill, it became evident that diesel locomotive haulage through a 2½-mile tunnel between the two mines would best suit prevailing conditions. Since the lowest operating level, known as the 1100 level, of each mine would be at approximately the same elevation, it was obvious that such a tunnel should be driven on this level. Not only would this tunnel facilitate feeding Ivanhoe ore into the underground crusher and skip loading installation at Austinville, but it would also open up a known orebody 5000 ft southwest of the Van Mater shaft. In addition it would provide a valuable diamond drilling base from which a large and a potentially favorable but untested block of ground might be explored. In order to hasten the completion of the tunnel, it was felt that it should be driven from both ends. ENGINEERING CONTROL PROCEDURES It was vital that the tunnel junction be made accurately on line and grade; thus it was felt that engineering control of an unusually high degree of reliability was required to prevent an accumulation

This paper traces the co-operative initiative undertaken by South Africa?s gold mining companies through the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) in development of hydraulic technologies. After a brief description of the structure of these technologies? development under COMRO?s stewardship, the paper turns to an overview of the structure of innovation within which these hydraulic technologies were developed. A central focus of this paper is systematic review on whether similar technologies are likely to emerge in the present system of innovation and the role played by innovation policy.

This report describes work on the problem of predicting oil recovery from a reservoir into which water is injected at a temperature higher than the reservoir temperature, taking into account effects of vis cosity-ratio reduction, heat loss and thermal expansion. It includes the derivation of the equations involved, the finite difference equations used to solve the partial differential equation which models the system, and the results obtained using the IBM 1620 and 7090-1401 computers. Figures and tables show present results of this study of recovery as a function of reservoir thickness and injection rate. For a possible reservoir hot water flood in which 1,000 BWPD at 250F are injected, an additional 5 per cent recovery of oil in place in a swept 1,000-ft-radius reservoir is predicted after injection of one pore volume of water. INTRODUCTION The problem of predicting oil recovery from the injection of hot water has been discussed by several researchers. l-6,19 In no case has the problem of predicting heat losses been rigorously incorporated into the recovery and displacement calculation problem. Willman et al. describe an approximate method of such treatment. 1 The calculation of heat losses in a reservoir and the corresponding temperature distribution while injecting a hot fluid has been attempted by several authors.7'8 In this report a method is presented to numerically predict the oil displacement by hot water in a radial system, taking into account the heat losses to adjacent strata, changes in viscosity ratio with temperature and the thermal-expansion effect for both oil and water. DERIVATION OF BASIC EQUATIONS We start with the familiar Buckley-Leverettg equation for a radial system:* This is sometimes referred to as the Lagrangian form of the displacement equation. If the injection water is at some temperature Ti which is above reservoir temperature TR, then lw, the flowing fraction which is water, is a function of both water saturation and fluid temperature at any given time and position in the reservoir. This paper presents the results of an extensive hydrological and geomechanical monitoring program which Gas conducted at a longwall coal mine in W. Va. The field program included monitoring of groundwater levels. overburden hydraulic conductivity, overburden movement, and surface subsidence relative to the passage of the longwall. Overburden geology and rock strength characteristics were evaluated prior to mining. A postmining corehole was drilled to evaluate main roof fracturing. An overburden response model is proposed based on the correlations between hydrological and geomechanical data.

"For over 50 years the JKMRC has applied a unique education-based research strategy to develop modelling and simulation tools that are "fit for purpose" for industrial application. These tools are widely used for the analysis and optimisation of mining and mineral processing systems. As the mining industry context evolves to deal with declining head grades, falling commodity prices, professional skill shortages, and an exponential growth in the volume of data, a re-evaluation of what "fit for purpose" means in the future is required. It is contended that future industry needs for simulation-based decision support requires tools and systems that incorporate: • Multi-component modelling, • Models of complex sensor behaviour, • Integration across the physical value-chain e.g. resource to market, • Financial analysis including risk and uncertainty assessment, • Enabling multi-criterion decision making (technical, financial and environmental), • Ore-body knowledge at multiple scales, • The use of fundamental numerical models to provide insight for the development of practically useful models, and • Decision support delivered through remote operations centres. JKMRC and CRC-ORE are collaborating to develop a next-generation simulation-based decision support system that assists in addressing these challenges. The Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES) combines many years of pragmatic and successful work integrated with modern technology trends - in particular the rapid move to cloud-based computing."

The term slag has been used to define a wide variety of material including mine spoil and slag produced at steel plants. The present paper is concerned only with the non-metallic alumino-silicates developed simultaneously with iron in blast furnaces.The control of iron quality by slag has long been appreciated but here aspects of slag control based on concurrent iron production are indicated. Consideration is given to the basic composition of slags relative to the type of allotrope required. Up to a point, the plant conditions, under which a particular slag type is processed, have some effect, but these conditions only widen the range of a given allotrope.They do not convert one slag type into another. The nature of the slag types and experiments with additives to convert one slag type into another are discussed.The various uses for allotropes of blast furnace slag are considered.Their use in air cooled slag, foamed slag, slag wool, cements, soil stabilization, glass bottles, and building bricks and blocks, is explored in some detail.INTRODUCTIONWithin recent memory, blast furnace practice has been solely concerned with the production of iron. The slag make at this time had not reached embarrassing proportions. In Britain, unlike Germany, no legislation existed to prevent the growth of unsightly slag banks. Generally slag found limited use as fill and road material in the immediate plant vicinity. This is broadly the case in Australia today. In Europe and America, where the slag make is of the order of several million tons annually, the room problem and the cost of dumping slag has stimulated commercial and scientific research on the disposal problem. Currently, most iron plants in Europe can profitably dispose of at least 95 per cent of their slag make.

The objective of this research was to devise and test an apparatus to rapidly evaluate the cohesive and frictional strength of coal in situ, in order to increase the safety and percentage of coal recovery from underground coal mines. During the first year device was designed utilizing the bore-hole shear test principle from soil shear strength testing: Two opposing corrugated plates are forced outward to exert a controlled contact pressure against the sides of a previously bared hole, and then the plates are very slowly pulled along the axis of the hole to cause shearing of coal in contact with the plates. Results with the device are expressed in terms of a friction angle[_] and a cohesion c. The [ ] angles obtained from an Iowa coal arc in close agreement with and fall between results from triaxial and direct shear laboratory tests on the same coal. The measured cohesion was found to be much less than from the comparable laboratory tests. It may be increased by pre-stressing and other techniques to embed the shear plate teeth for the first shear test point.

Com base nos modelos analíticos de Johnson e Mehl, Kolmogorov e Avrami (JMAK) e Cahn, no presente trabalho estudou-se via simulação computacional a cinética das transformações de fases no estado sólido. Tais transformações ocorreram numericamente por nucleação e crescimento nas interfaces de poliedros do tipo Ortotetracaidecaedros em um domínio discreto. O intuito da matriz de Ortotetracaidecaedros é aproximar-se das características fenomenológicas de uma rede perfeita de grãos no espaço amostral. Realizaram-se simulações de nucleação com posições aleatórias em toda a matriz (bulk). Em um segundo estudo foram realizadas novas simulações de nucleação aleatoriamente, porém somente nas interfaces dos Ortotetracaidecaedros. A quantidade de núcleos iniciais para cada caso foi definida por processo de ponto de Poisson. A fração volumétrica, a área interfacial entre material transformado e não transformado, a contiguidade e o caminho microestrutural foram os resultados obtidos através das simulações. Tais resultados foram comparados com as equações analíticas. As nucleações com até mil núcleos corroboraram com JMAK e foram ratificados com o comportamento da contiguidade e do caminho microestrutural. Já as nucleações com valores acima de mil núcleos, mostram a presença de clusters, apresentando uma boa concordância com o modelo analítico de Cahn.

"Nickel saprolite ores are normally mined as feed to Fe-Ni smelters or Ni matte smelting operations. The smelting processes typically require high Ni cut-off grades of approximately 1.5 to 2.2% Ni, depending on the operation. These very high cut-off grades result in a significant portion of the saprolite profile being regarded as “waste” and hence having little to no value. The Starved Acid Leach Technology (SALT) was developed to recover nickel and cobalt from nickel saprolites and Caron plant residues. Relatively small amounts of acid are applied to ground saprolites or Caron residues in order to selectively leach nickel and cobalt. The leaching is performed atmospherically under low free acid conditions. Nickel and cobalt may be recovered from the leachate as a mixed hydroxide. The mixed hydroxide may be added directly to a saprolite smelting operation or refined separately. InCoR Technologies is advancing the application of SALT at a number of sites. Bench scale testing has provided a relationship between acid addition and nickel extraction in leaching. Conceptual engineering studies have been completed by SNC Lavalin. The simplicity of the SALT technology provides the benefits of low capital and operating cost and an expected rapid ramp up to full production.INTRODUCTION The recent history of hydrometallurgical nickel laterite treatment plants has demonstrated mixed financial and operational performance. Table 1 summarizes the next generation plants built after the financial and/or technical failure of the Bulong, Cawse and Murrin-Murrin plants in Australia. The Coral Bay plants (Line 1 and 2) stand out (and now Taganito) as relatively low capital cost, simple (no acid plant, production of mixed sulfide product), and modest in scale (10, 12 and 36 kt Ni/a). However, the other plants in the list (Ravensthorpe, Ramu, Goro and Ambatovy) are all characterized by financial and technical challenges. All plants have a very high capital cost ($67,000 to $120,000 USD/annual t of Ni production). Ravensthorpe was sold by BHP Billiton after a poor startup. Ramu has had a steady ramp up but only produces mixed hydroxide for refining by others. Goro has had an extended construction period (since 2001), is high cost and has been very slow to ramp up to design production rates. Ambatovy has had a steady ramp up."

It concludes that Mufulira Mine has become the first mine in Zambia to convert 100% of its stoping to ?Smartdets?, because the Mine?s management was prepared to look beyond the unit cost of product and were ready to look at the broader picture of cost effectiveness and increased productivity.

The goal of any business is to seek the maximum profitability for the organization through optimization the use of resources, processes and the application of new technologies. An analysis of various case studies demonstrate that blasting can have positive impacts on the crushing and milling processes resulting in increased profitability for the mining industry (Grundstrom, Kanchibotla, Jankovich & Thornton, 2001). This paper describes the case study of two copper mines in Peru producing Cu-Mo and Cu-Au concentrates, which together with their strategic partner, have implemented a project focused on the improvement of rock fragmentation. The project was based on techniques of pattern size reduction, the use of high energy explosives and the technology of electronic initiation. Combined, these techniques were shown to have significantly impacted the efficiency of downstream processes.

According to the world bank1, the mining industry consumes up to 11 percent of global energy use. In comparison, 70 percent of mining projects from the six largest mining companies operate in water-stressed regions. To steer the direction of the process industries toward more sustainable practices, more than 40 governments have adopted a price on carbon. This measure includes additional taxes on the use of fossil fuels, trade programs, new standards for renewable energy, energy efficiency mandates, more stringent emissions regulation, carbon offsets, etc. This emphasis is also supported by investors shifting their priorities to reduce risk by focusing on long-term plans, including environmentally friendly operations. The metals and mining industry is at the core of the green energy mix and electrification of vehicles. This new trend creates an astronomical increase in demand for minerals. Under a 2-degree scenario, according to the latest analysis from the world bank, as new energy technologies continue to grow, it is expected that all minerals to double in demand, and the distribution of these materials will depend on their application. • Solar panels, will account for 87% of the aluminum demand, and more than 95% of silver • Wind turbines and geothermal plants will require 98% zinc and 64% titanium. • Solar and wind energy alone will demand more than 74% of the global supply of copper, and this is without considering wiring or other infrastructure to connect the grid • Battery storage accounts for 100% of the graphite and lithium demand. (Hund, 2020) • Other materials, such as nickel and steel, are also projected to more than double in demand as they are cross-technology minerals. These materials require a manufacturing process that is accountable for the emissions proper of the transformation process. It requires that these processes move from a hindsight mode focused on reporting to a forecasting mode based on run-time measurement of GHG emissions. This is a critical first step in companies realizing an economic return for doing the right thing for the environment and their communities.

There are presently in use many grinding mill control schemes and concepts. This paper presents one operating method of controlling the particle size of the cyclone overflows for proper metallurgical results and controlling the level of the cyclone feed sump and new feed rate to obtain lowest unit cost of finished (ground) material which is usually at the maximum grinding mill throughput. This system stresses simplicity of field instrumentation and control strategy. Both of these factors lead to better operator understanding and acceptance. The low capital investment of this system also makes it more attractive at the Buick Concentrator when compared to other more complicated systems utilizing mass flow measurement and a computer to calculate circulating load and infer particle size. Furthermore, it has the advantage of utilizing an actual measurement for control, rather than a difficult-to-maintain inferred value. There are several reasons for maximizing mill throughput at Buick. The milling rate before automatic control was too low when compared to mill throughput increases planned for the future. Through this new operating system, it appears Buick will not have to make major changes of mill motors and speeds to meet the increased? production rate. Also, since power costs continue to escalate, it is desirable to maximize the throughput to the grinding circuit and reduce overgrinding to achieve a reduction in power cost per ton of ore milled. Presently, 45% of the concentrators' total power is consumed in this grinding circuit.

During this period most important developments concerning the machine technology for EPB- and Slurry-Shields have taken place. Since the first application of a hydro shield for the Wilhelmsburg Collector project in Hamburg in the early seventies, several stages of development have led to the current state-of-the-art in mechanized tunnelling. The continuous improvement of TBM techniques allows the execution of high quality tunnelling, particularly with regard to maximum safety and efficiency. The practical experience of the construction companies is of essential importance in order to continue further development and improvement.

China’s mineral deposits are the result of metallogenic processes associated with the geodynamic evolution of tectonic plates and eventual amalgamation into their modern configuration. The principal tectonic provinces of China comprise the North China Craton, Yangtze Craton, Cathaysia Craton, Tarim block, Altay-Tianshan-Hinggan orogens (part of the Central Asian Orogenic Bel), Central China orogens, Songpan-Ganze orogen and Alpine-Himalayan fold belts, which are part of the huge Tethysides. These tectonic elements are testimony to a complex geological history spanning more than 3000 million years. This contribution will focus on selected areas of the Altay-Tianshan, the fold belts surrounding the North China Craton and Yangtze Craton and the mineral systems along the Ailaoshan-Red River fault zone. Mineral deposits in these provinces include gold, copper, molybdenum, tin, antimony, nickel, platinum group elements, lead and zinc.CITATION:Pirajno, F, 2015.
