The results revealed that the pozzolanic activity of the gold mine tailings and their main mineral phases improved by mechanical activation. Under the same activation conditions, the activated mica powders possessed the highest pozzolanic activity index, followed by the activated feldspar, and the activated quartz exhibited the lowest pozzolanic activity index. The addition of calcium oxide promoted the formation of amorphous C–(A)–S–H gel for all paste samples, and stratlingite and hydrotalcite were observed in calcium oxide activated mica paste. The addition of natural anhydrite promoted the formation of ettringite for the pastes of calcium oxide activated aluminosilicates materials (gold mine tailings, mica, and feldspar). Furthermore, the pozzolanic activity indexes of the mechanically activated gold mine tailings and their main mineral phases were tested to be qualified for use as supplementary cementitious material in cement. This paper provided an innovative approach for recycling gold mine tailings as supplementary cementitious materials in cement, which would be environmentally friendly and cost-effective. This paper describes the survey monitoring processes at Venetia, which are discussed under visual inspections, ad hoc investigations, system monitoring and slope stability radar monitoring. This is followed by a description of the main survey monitoring methods. The next section briefly states typical problems, i.e. the atmospheric corrections required to adjust total station distances, maintenance of the system and management of the monitoring process. The paper ends with some important lessons that could be applied to similar monitoring programmes. These lessons are firstly, communication is most important, process a vital part of the system, a champion must take responsibility for the programme and system planning ensures that the monitoring results are needs driven.

"Virtually every article you read on safety has a statement to the effect: “It’s obvious that safety pays”. If it is so obvious, why is it so hard to answer these questions? • How does the Maintenance or Operations Manager convince the Plant Manager to spend money from the annual budget for safety improvements? • How does the Plant Manager influence Corporate to prioritize safety improvements? • How does an engineering firm persuade the owner to spend more on design and equipment up front to reduce risk? There are many cultural and structural reasons why it is so difficult to prove the obvious. In my opinion the main culprits are: the almost universally used ‘Low Bid’ process, variations in reporting incident statistics between industries and countries, and, the Generally Accepted Accounting procedures (GAAP) [or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)]. Conventional wisdom is it’s smart not to spend more than you need to meet the minimum regulations and maximize production. But buying on price alone often harms people, degrades the environment, and reduces the company’s bottom line. How can this be? You met the minimum safety requirements and saved money by buying on price. Don’t those savings go right to the bottom line? When you buy on price you get minimum quality, minimum compliance and are often backed corner with no reasonable options to rectify the problems that arise from buying on price instead of buying on long term life cycle cost. Culturally few companies actually ‘walk the talk’. It is trendy to have giant billboards at plant entrances proclaiming world class compliance with quality and safety standards. Annual reports are embellished with safety slogans and sustainability statements. Behind the front gates and the glossy annual reports the message is clear: produce or be replaced. Only a few companies go beyond the window dressing and actually endorse, from the top down, continuously improving their safety culture. Those that do embrace safety, show significant performance advantages over their competition that are reflected in their safety, productivity and environmental records and, ultimately their financial statements and share price. Current accounting (and reward) systems make it unlikely financial managers will accept non-conventional approaches to justifying expenditures on safety because they are driven to report “hard” numbers that can be documented and are within the “GAAP or IFRS Rules.” But in reality, accountants quantify soft or intangible costs all the time in their financial statements. Justifying safety investments is greatly enhanced by quantifying what most financial managers would call intangible costs. Government agencies have no problem assigning intangible costs to justify regulations to improve safety. How many times have you heard that the regulation is justified because the cost to industry is X while the benefit to the society is 2 or 3X? How can they say that without including intangible costs? We find it hard to believe these government claims of benefits to society because we have been trained to think about saving hard direct costs to justify investments."

THE WILLISTON basin is the largest known sedimentary basin on the North. American continent. Two-thirds of this large basin lies within the United States in Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Less than 10 years after the first commercial oil discovery in North Dakota in 1951, the petroleum became one of the largest industries in the three-state area. Crude petroleum is now the most valuable mineral resource in the area. In 1960, the basin produced 39 million barrels of worth $100 million at the wellhead. Most of the 137 oil pools covered to date are in Paleozoic carbonates at depths ranging from 3,000 to 13,000 feet. The major producing fields, centered on the Cedar Creek anticline in Montana and the Nesson anticline in North Dakota, produce from depths below 6,000 feet. This report presents descriptions of all phases of the Williston basin petroleum industry, including leasing, exploration, geology, drilling, production, transportation, and refining. Engineering, physical, and production data, maps, and crude petroleum analyses for 137 separate oil pools are included.

The deposit has been exploited for Mn oxide and carbonate since 1916. Known reserves of MnO, however, are almost depleted and the survival of the mine will depend on the exploitation of the carbonate. Kriging, inverse distance weighting (IDW) and cross-sectional methods have been applied to the evaluation of the carbonate resources and reconciliation of the estimates obtained shows that kriging and IDW give almost identical block values. A comparison using conditional probability indicates that there is virtually no difference between the global reserve estimates derived from the cross-sectional and kriging methods. The physical causes of these similarities are highlighted and the problems of dealing with multimodal distributions are discussed together with the difficulties of semi-variogram modelling

Gravity concentration at the Pegasus Gold/Montana Tunnels Mine, near Helena, MT, began in June 1991 when a coarse-gold-scalping circuit was commissioned. It processes a small portion of the ball-mill circulating load to reduce the risk of gold particles that are too coarse to float from advancing to flotation. The circuit also cost-effectively enhances overall gold recovery and payable gold ounces. This gravity circuit has been a major success. Since the circuit was commissioned, throughput has increased 30%. Several modifications and improvements were made during the last three years that allowed the gravity circuit to keep pace with the higher tonnage. The overall approach to gravity concentration at Montana Tunnels has always been to optimize production rather than maximize the gold ounces produced. This philosophy has now yielded a circuit expansion and relocation project. It will allow for an estimated 50% increase in gravity gold production, while significantly reducing the unit costs of production.

William Kent, New York, N. Y.:—The Institute may congratulate itself on the opportunity of reading the splendid address of President Brunton. It is an admirable summary of the progress that has been made in the mining and metallurgical arts in recent years. The paper rightly gives the chief credit for this progress to the aid which has been rendered to these arts by the advances in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity. It is notable that most of the headings in Mr. Brunton's address refer to the work of the mechanical engineer, the electrical engineer, and the chemist, rather than to that of the specialist in mining-operations. It seems that the most successful mining engineer of the present day is the one who makes the most intelligent application of the inventions and designs of engineers and others who are not directly engaged in mining. A tabulation of the headings of the address, grouped as below, shows this most clearly. Work of the Mechanical Engineer—Rock-drills, hoisting-machinery, tramming, pumping, ventilation, dredging, Sampling, concentration, briquetting, fume-recovery. Work of the Electrical Engineer—Electric machinery for hoisting, pumping, tramming, lighting and signaling, electric transmission, electric smelting. "The mining operation at Namdeb’s Southern Coastal Mine (SCM) is unique. It targets gravel layers up to 30 m below sea level, which continue to dip deeper, further west, under the Atlantic Ocean. On this storm-dominated coastline, severe water seepage into mining areas, rugged orebody footwall characteristics, and highly variable resource grades all contribute to a challenging operational environment. Namdeb has a proud history of innovation, and as the mine progresses further westwards and associated technical and economic challenges increase, this innovative culture has become essential to the future of the mine. The Theory of Constraints (ToC) has been widely used at SCM, and across the mining discipline, to focus efforts on improving overall business profitability. Through analysis of the mining processes, opportunities were identified, solutions developed, and initiatives implemented with staggering results across all three mining disciplines, i.e. stripping, load and haul, and bedrock bulking and cleaning. This paper outlines the solutions adopted and the results of the ToC analysis. IntroductionSouthern Coastal Mine (SCM) is one of three Namdeb operations located in the southwestern corner of Namibia, between the Orange River in the south, the Namib Desert to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west (Figure 1). These three geographical features set the backdrop for the world’s greatest marine diamond mining placer (Badenhorst, 2003). SCM is situated along the coastline extending from the mouth of the Orange River to Chameis Bay approximately 120 km to the north. The active mining area, called Mining Area 1 (MA1) is, however, limited to very narrow strip, 30 km in length, in the south of the licence area, close to the town of Oranjemund.Namdeb, a wholly owned subsidiary of Namdeb Holdings, is a 50/50 joint venture between De Beers and the Government of Namibia. Diamonds were first discovered along the Namibian coastline in April 1908, close to the town of Luderitz, but mining operations started in the SCM mining area only in February 1929 (Schneider, 2009). Initially all Namdeb mining operations exploited massive land-based deposits, producing nearly 40 million carats from MA1 between 1920 and 1977 (Schneider, 2009) when mining targeted onshore raised beaches west of the high water line. Since 1977 however, SCM and Namdeb have developed a unique mining method to economically extract the resource which extends westward under the Atlantic Ocean."

The coir fiber extracted from the husk of the coconut has been extensively used as polymer composite reinforcement in a variety of industrial applications ranging from civil construction to automobile seat cushions. The hydrophilic coir fiber does not act as an effective reinforcement owing to its low interfacial strength with hydrophobic polymers. As a consequence, coir fiber composites display relatively low mechanical strength. The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of an acetylation treatment of the coir fiber surface on the mechanical behavior of epoxy composites with amounts of fibers up to 30% in volume. Coir fibers were immersed in an acid solution of acetic anhydride for one hour, washed and dried, before mixing with DGEBA/TETA epoxy to fabricate the composites. Flexural mechanical properties were obtained by bend tests. The results showed significant differences to similar composites with alkali treated coir fibers that have been previously investigated.

Rb-Sr measurements on total-rock samples of granitic rocks from the Mount Isa region have confirmed the existence of two periods of granite-forming activity. The Kalkadoon Granite, together with the Ewen Granite and possibly an older phase of the Sybella Granite, has been shown to belong to the earlier age-group at 1760 m.y.; the Wimberu Granite and a pegmatite associated with the Sybella Granite have been dated at 1540 m.y. The initial Sr ratio suggests that the Wimberu Granite may be new material of deep-seated origin.Further Rb-Sr measurements have confirmed previously-reported K-Ar results upon biotites from these rocks, whilst showing that, in this metamorphic terrain, biotites have lost varying amounts of radiogenic Sr and Ar, and therefore yield ages which are younger than the true age of the second event.

WipFrag systems I and II have become the world standard in photoanalysis systems to measure fragmentation. Mines, quarries and excavating contractors can now easily measure blast results and track the progress of optimization efforts. This technology was developed and evolved to allow automatic measurements of the size distribution of patiicles on moving conveyors, in truck boxes and on crusher feeds. Production machinery can now be controlled by photoanalysis results and multiple cameras allow various locations to be monitored by a single system. Blast designs can be monitored on a shot by shot basis. Changes in delay times, explosives, patterns and hole sizes can be quickly evaluated. Along with this measurement capability has come a heightened awareness of the importance of “optimum size” and uniformity of particles for lowest cost production and material handling efficiency. In the past, savings in the “drill / blast” cycle of the operation were sometimes overshadowed by downstream production costs related to fragmentation. Now total production costs can be compared with fragmentation sizes which will immediately show the trend towards optimum size for economical production. No cost reduction program can be complete without this critical information.

"The basic problem of arsenic contamination from mine water is discussed. Effective methods of removal involving chemical precipitation, activated carbon adsorption, ion exchange and reverse osmosis are discussed. As well as an economic analysis, detail is also paid to other ions in solution which are removed simultaneously.INTRODUCTIONThe object of this paper is to review arsenic and its removal from gold extraction plant effluents. The first method considered is chemical precipitation. A second method is sorption processes, such as ion exchange resins and activated carbon adsorption. A third method is the possible application of reverse osmosis for the treatment of mine waste waters containing arsenic.Arsenic pollution in the gold mining communities of Canada and Ghana have been extensively studies (l, 2). Lynch(3) Shabunin, Gutman and Kogan( 4), Hollo, Troth, Vennes and Illinigi (5) and Hau(6) have reported their removal methods of arsenic by chemical precipitation, ion exchange and biological methods. Their conclusions were that the precipitation with Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions was most effective.Scope of the ProblemInitial aspects of this research program involved a detailed analysis of the operation of a gold extraction plant located in Canada. The name and location of the mine is proprietary information. Figure 1 gives a basic process schematic with the main tailing streams identified.Table 1 gives information as to the various mine streams and their physical and chemical composition. In this study, primary attention is paid to the removal of dissolved arsenic from waste waters. Solids from this type of operation can always be back-filled. As could be anticipated, the dissolved As content of the primary flotation tailing stream is very low. The dissolved As level in the secondary processing stream and the roasting quench water is quite high. The reason being that at this stage of the process, the arsenic has been freed from the arsenopyrite forms."

The Singapore Land Transport Authority Contract C917A is for the design, construction and completion of all outstanding works under the original Contract 917, including taking over the design and construction responsibility for the works carried out by previous contractor. Construction works connect the bored tunnels between the stations at King Albert Park and Sixth Avenue on the Downtown Line two in Singapore.The original contractor became insolvent leaving the works incomplete. On 29 August 2013 McConnell Dowell were awarded the completion contract following a fast-tracked tender process. The completion contract required a quick start and therefore the recruitment of some of the original workforce. A large majority of the original workforce was from Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Philippines, Bangladesh, India and Thailand. In order to ensure that the safety standards were upheld, and that the new workforce embraced a safety culture, a behaviour based safety (BBS) approach was implemented.The BBS approach was implemented to overcome the existing poor cultural safety behaviours, and to ensure that high standards and expectations for safety were implemented. This ensured that the workforce were comfortable in identifying hazards, avoiding shortcuts, and changing poor safety behaviours.This article outlines how a BBS program was delivered on the C917A project, containing defined goals, communication tools, and assessment and feedback models.CITATION:Brown, R, 2014. Due to the planned deepening of the NY Harbor, NYCEDC/NYCDEP is planning to replace two existing water lines between Brooklyn and Staten Island with one deeper water pipe. The crossing, just north of the Verrazanno Bridge is 1.75 miles long. The new pipeline will be tunneled using gasketed concreted segmented liners. Apressurized face machine will be used through the soft ground. This will be the first subaqueous application using this technology in New York City. This paper discusses the planning, design and risk issues associated with the crossing and the challenging soil conditions that resulted in the decision to use a pressurized face machine.

The use of walk-through inspections, approvals and ad hoc investigations to ensure risk is kept within acceptable levels is reaching its limits of effectiveness. Further improvement in occupational health and safety requires a systems approach, and the use of Quality Management principles is an obvious basis for this. SafeGuard, a æbest practiceÆ model health and safety management system and audit criteria based on AS/NZS ISO 9001:1994, has been produced by the Department of Mines and Energy. Quality style audits of mine and quarry health and safety systems are now being carried out by the Inspectorate.

IN REGENT YEARS, blast furnace operators have found it necessary to improve their technology in order to handle increasingly low-grade feed and yet satisfy the demands for greater tonnages of metal. Studies have been made covering several aspects of the problem, and in this connection the slags produced in the iron-making process have been critically examined with a view to discovering the slag with the optimum properties for a given operation. A good slag should combine, as far as possible, the properties listed in Table I. Unfortunately, some of these desirable properties are incompatible. For example, the advantage of the small ?bulk of a low-flux slag is offset by its low desulphurization potential and high viscosity. Similarly, a very fluid slag increases refractory wear. It will be seen, then, that a balance must he struck between these conflicting requirements. In the .present paper only the melting relationships of blast furnace slag ?compositions will be considered in detail. In interpreting the data herein presented, the optimum property requirements listed in Table 1 must strictly be borne in mind. It should also be noted that the discussion presented here always relates to calcined fluxes, since this facilitates reference to the final slag composition. Thus, in making calculations pertaining to the ?burdening of the furnace, due allowance should ?be made for the fact that the fluxes are added as carbonates.
