It is a great honour to address our Institute as President, but the choice of a suitable subject was not an easy one. In the past when the presidential address was given at an annual conference the subject usually related to the conference or industry concerned; more recently the subjects have been more philosophical and this is a distinct advantage to me.I appreciate that I am addressing an informed audience and I am sure' that you are well advised in many of the points that I hope to leave with you. Unlike the specialist who gets to know more and more about less and less and eventually knows everything about nothing, I am one of the group who gets to know less and less about more and more and eventually knows nothing about everything.I hope you will appreciate this point whilst you are listening to me.In recent years I have been closely associated with the problem that troubles most governments of our time: the competition of many groups of differing backgrounds for the land that is available to the nation.This is of particular interest to the industry with which we are concerned as it is of critical importance to the discovery and development of future reserves of minerals and metals. Part of my daily task is involved with the administration of legislation for mining operations and the conditions under which such operations may be undertaken, in implementing government policies relating to mining, and in designing and administering legislationdirected to safety and health in mines.Most of our members are involved in exploration or in day-to-day problems associated with the production of minerals or the management of companies in these pursuits and would be aware of many of the conflicting viewpoints on priorities.F. F. Espie in his presidential address of 1975 'On being a minority', made the point that our Institute found that the mining industry had a great communication 'Problem with the Australian people.I believe that this is one of our major problems.

Several growth chamber and laboratory experiments were conducted to study the germination behavior of plant species on mine spoils and plant growth responses to nutrients on spoils and topsoils. Experiments were conducted to study the germination potential of some native and introduced species under various conditions. The seeds of green needlegrass, side oats grama, thickspike wheatgrass, crested wheatgrass, birdsfoot trefoil and emerald crownvetch were less tolerant, whereas those of alkali sacaton. durar hard fescue, slender wheatgrass, yellow sweetclover and alfalfa were most tolerant to the sodic mine spoil conditions. Addition of leonardite improved the germination potential of some of the poor genninators. Slender wheatgrass and yellow sweetclover were used as test plants to study the fertility status and productivity potential of stockpiled topsoils and spoils collected from Center. Glenharold and South Beulah of North Dakota. The topsoils were neither saline nor sodic but low in N and P. The spoils were neutral to alkaline with SAIL of 12-32, EC of 1.8-5.5 mmhos/cm, Olsen&apos;s P< µ4g/g, and total N <0.07%. Application of N and P together to the topsoils increased the yield of wheatgrass and sweetclover by 88% and 70% of their respective maximum yields, whereas near maximum yields were obtained for both the species by the same treatments to the spoils. The average yields on topsoils were higher than the yields on spoils. The concentrations of major nutrients were higher in plants grown on topsoil, whereas the opposite was true with the concentrations of Mn, Zn, and Cu. Growth chamber experiments were also conducted to study the growth responses of alfalfa, oats and slender wheat grass by the application of Mn and Zn to a sodic coal mine spoil which was previously used for pot culture experiments. Significant growth responses to Mn and Zn were observed in alfalfa but not in oats or slender wheatgrass. Fertilizing the spoil with Mn along with NPK increased the yield of alfalfa to 85% and with Mn + Zn to 99%. Growth responses and plant composition results of this study confirm that the application of major nutrients to spoils can accentuate Zn and Mn deficiencies in some plants.

Field studies of the radiations backscattered by iron ores from a 60Co source of primary gamma radiation located in a borehole logging probe have confirmed thatthe P&quot; factor, a ratio of high energy gamma ray intensities to low energy intensities in selected energy windows of the backscattered gamma-ray spectrum, is a valuable measure of grade for sedimentary iron ores of the Pilbararegion of Western Australia.Laboratory studies of model boreholes have shown that variations in borehole diameter and variations in bulk density of the formations have a significant influence on the measurement of P&quot; ratios. If these influences &apos;are taken into account the mean ore grade in a new blast hole, for instance, can be predicted with a probe of suitable configuration to within 0&#183;8 per cent Fe at the 95 per cent confidence level, while the grade of a single 120-cm split can be determined to within 2&#183;6 per cent Fe. These results were obtained by pooling data from five blast holes covering the range of iron concentrations 20-68 per cent Fe and apply to the mean hole grades 54-68 per cent Fe.Results for two development holes were generally comparable to those obtained from individual blast holes95 per cent confidence limits of &#177;0&#183;9 per cent Fe for mean ore grade and &#177; 4&#183;1 per cent Fe for single splits. A greater number of data points is needed before these confidence limits can be further improved.The technique utilized to obtain these results was derived from a &quot;multiband&quot; approach to collection of backscattered spectral intensity data, an approach which permitted selection at the data processing stage of the most statistically significant P&quot; ratios for the type of mineralization encountered in the field. The multiband technique also permitted selection of the most significant of another set of windows in the backscattered gammarayspectrum to measure a newly developed &quot;S-factor&quot;, a ratio sensitive to borehole diameter. Another window provided information on bulk density. All these measurements were made with a single pass of the same loggingprobe.

Mr. Garrett brings up several interesting points with respect to the proposed API specification for "nontreated bentonite." However, although not explicitly stated, these specifications are being written based strictly on bentonites from the Wyoming/South Dakota area. Other sodium bentonites may be suitable for use as drill mud but will be unacceptable since the specifications are designed for Wyoming bentonites. Regardless of the API&apos;s intent that its specifications are intended only as guidelines, they are generally adhered to on an international basis and, for practical purposes, might as well be chiseled in stone. Estes (1986) notes that the quality of bentonite available from Wyoming producers has steadily declined since the early 1960&apos;s. The plastic viscosity: yield point (PV:YP) ratio was included in the current API 13A specification primarily to prevent excessive polymer treatment of lower quality bentonites to make drill mud. However, with development of polymers designed to control YP, this specification cannot ensure that only high-quality bentonites are used for drill mud. Nor will the new specifications for untreated bentonites. Other sodium bentonites are available. Bentonite produced in southeast Oregon demonstrates superior performance characteristics without addition of polymer or other chemicals. However, the exceptionally high purity of these deposits leads to a relatively high YP:PV ratio since the naturally high YP probably results from the higher purity and smaller particle size of this bentonite (Rath, 1986 and personal communication). These bentonites typically have a smectite component exceeding 90% (Rath, 1985), compared with 70% to 75% smectite for typical Wyoming bentonites, as determined by X¬ray diffraction and tests for colloid content. As evident from the accompanying table, the untreated Oregon bentonite has excellent rheological properties, though different from Wyoming bentonites due to the high purity. Additionally, this bentonite reacts well with polymers typically used in the oil industry, making it eminently suitable for use in a low-solids mud system. The extremely low grit content, less that 0.5% on a 75 mm (200-mesh) wet sieve, greatly exceeds the standards set for Wyoming bentonite. Optimum rheological properties are obtained at a higher moisture content than Wyoming bentonites. At 10% moisture, API 13A maximum, the clay is overdried, again reflecting the high smectite content. "In project evaluation there are two matters of keen interest to non-executive directors: the process by which an investment recommendation is reached, as well as the investment itself, as presented. It is sometimes mistakenly believed that Boards of directors are interested only in the result. That is not so. The process by which project evaluations are derived and socialised with the Board is as important as the result, sometimes more so.Setting aside the gloomy predictions of the doomsayers and looking through short-term volatility in supply and demand, the overall availability of mineral resources more often than not exceeds demand. There are in reality more development projects in prospect at any one time than are needed to meet the market. Only the fittest will prosper, although some others may survive.Optimism springs eternal in the mining industry and every project promoter, executive or entrepreneur has a convincing project development case. Some will create value for shareholders, but the historical evidence suggests that many will fail to meet the expectations set in their evaluation.Boards of directors make the final decision to invest, or not, in a new mine. Knowledge is power, and on that basis the balance of power favours management. Management has the facts (or in some cases, what passes for fact) and the passion to invest. The non-executives have the power of approval – yes or no – but before making a decision directors must demonstrate due diligence, the essential precursor to project approval.Management has a vital part to play in facilitating that due diligence process and in encouraging the independent thought processes of the Board. A closed approach by management fosters a negative, risk-averse attitude on the part of the Board. Amostras dos aços inoxidáveis duplex UNS S31803 (duplex padrão) e UNS S32304 (lean duplex) foram investigadas no estado de fornecimento, após laminação a frio com redução de 64% e 62% e recozimento na temperatura de 1055ºC com 20s de encharque. Foram medidas a dureza Vickers e a quantificação das fases, austenita e ferrita, usando o método de contagem por pontos. A textura cristalográfica foi obtida via técnica de EBSD. A textura cristalográfica da fase ferrítica no estado de fornecimento e recozida apresentou as fibras a //DL e q {100} //DN mais intensas, enquanto a fibra g {111} //DN aparece com intensidade menor. Na fase austenítica as principais componentes encontradas com maior intensidade estão na fibra a //DN e na fibra b com menor intensidade.

Dynamic market and operating conditions, coupled with an environment in which multiple objectives and trade-offs are common, pose major challenges for planners and schedulers working in any mining entity. Many mining companies recognise the need to shift from a siloed mining-focused push model to an integrated value chain, demand-driven approach, but there are still fundamental barriers in business process and the supporting technology preventing a consideration of end-to-end optimality.This paper presents some elements of experiences working with companies to adopt such advanced approaches. In addition to algorithmic elements, an approach to phased and gradual deployment of progressively more sophisticated optimisation models is described. From a practical software adoption perspective, it is believed that this last concern is also of primary importance. Next generation approaches to the optimisation of complex bulk commodity demand chains, namely iron ore and coal are presented, with case studies in the world’s largest integrated operations in Western Australia and Queensland from the raw material mined through to market. Utilising accurate simulation models supported by metaheuristic optimisation techniques, a range of ways to engineer a dynamic decision support framework that can adapt and change with the inevitable changes in commodity markets is explored. Objectives such as total revenue, margin, cost, NPV, throughput, asset utilisation, contractual penalties and bonuses, and energy consumption can be managed simultaneously across the mine, plant, logistics network, port operation, shipping and sales domains.CITATION:Balzary, J and Mohais, A, 2014. A gas–solid fluidized bed using magnetite particles is an effective methodology for coal beneficiation in the field of dry coal cleaning. Broadening the size range of magnetite used in the bed decreases medium preparation cost. In this study, a tapered fluidized bed was used to investigate a magnetite particle size range of −0.5 + 0.074 mm. The results showed that a tapered fluidized bed effectively strengthens mixing of magnetite with a wide size range (−0.5 + 0.074 mm). The results of beneficiation experiments indicated that with increasing tapered angle, separation efficiency increased and then decreased. The highest separation efficiency was obtained at a tapered angle of 10°. The optimal results showed that the ash content of the concentrate decreased from 31.82% to 12.33% with a probable error of 0.11, which indicated that a tapered fluidized bed was efficient to improve fine coal beneficiation performance.

On October 16, 1978, the Harnback open cut of Rheinische Braunkohlenwerke, the largest open cut ever planned, was officially put into operation. It will outperform all of the large open cuts known at present, both in its dimensions and in its annual output of overburden and coal. Present plans are to commence coal mining in 1983, although target production will only be achieved in 1995when the annual output will be 50 million tons of coal. Considering an overburden: coal ratio of 6: 1, this will involve the removal of approximately 300 million bank cubic metres of overburden. For overburden removal and coal mining, this open cut will use bucket-wheel excavators exclusively. It is planned to employ eight excavators with a daily output of 240,000 bank cubic metres each (Fig. 1). The transport of the overburden and coal to the dump and the power station, respectively, will be effected by 30Q0-mm-wide conveyors, running at a speed of 6 m/sec. The overburden will be dumped by spreaders having a boom length of 100 m, capable of dumping 240,000 bank cubic metres per day (Fig. 2). Such giants, of course, can only be used for extreme conditions . Their employment indicates that huge quantities of material can be handled economically for long periods. However, the use of bucket-wheel excavators is economic when daily outputs of 5,000 bank cubic metres are involved, in particular if direct backcasting of the overburden is not possible.

"Water evaluation and management during mining exploration and operational activities is crucial to minimise direct and indirect operational costs and also in delivering mining companies the less tangible, but equally critical æsocial license to operateÆ.Mining is often carried out in remote areas, where the mine will be the most significant and visible user and potential contaminator of water resources. However, wherever it is located, a mineÆs use of water must be managed in the context of two key aspects: the natural parameters of the resource; its abundance, its temporal variability and its chemical and physical qualities other users of the resource; other industry, potable water supplies and ecological requirements of local habitats.It is vital, therefore, that this commodity be assessed to an appropriate degree to help establish the viability and sustainability of the mining project and identify those other stakeholders who may be affected by the mining companyÆs activities.This paper outlines the background to catchment-scale model and presents a cost-effective method for establishing a robust water baseline and creating a water management tool to be used throughout whole mine life cycle. Numerical surface and groundwater modelling has long been established as a tool for reactive management, following collation of yearsÆ worth of data. Now, using freely available remote sensing data and desk study information, analytical modelling techniques can be used cost effectively to provide mining companies with a tool for assessing and managing their water consumption requirements at the outset of a new project venture.The paper includes a selection of case studies to show how the use of analytical modelling can be used as an evaluation and management tool to help not only assess general watershed parameters and water availability but also how it can be used as a tool to provide decision makers with the information to complete æwhat if?Æ scenario assessments. "Microwaves have the capability to heat up sulphides, especially clusters of particles of approx. 1 mm. Some sulphides absorb microwaves more readily than others. Molybdenite is especially effective in this regard, possibly due to its flaky nature and/or electrical conductivity. Even where it occurs in low concentrations in a deposit, individual rocks may be ore grade due to the high monetary value of MoS2. Such rocks often result from crushing mined veinlets or stockwork, or are contained in the cutoff grade fraction of ROM. Machine segregation of rocks high in MoS2 by infrared sensors after microwaving could therefore advantageously be used to upgrade lower grade ore between Mine and Mill. This would reduce the size of the latter, and thus its CAPEX and OPEX. Such upgrading could also yield shipping ore for a distant Mill, or extend ore reserves.Barrick Gold Corp. has been supporting the development of MW/IR sulphide sorting for the past three years. The results of MW/IR sorting work on molybdenite and other (pyritic) ore samples from a variety of sources are being presented here.INTRODUCTIONThis paper looks at mechanized, i.e. machine ore sorting technologies currently available and under development, and what conditions would be needed for the potential application of such ore sorting to sulphide mining and milling. Current machine sorting involves no-contact sensing technology for rocks, and signal processing after sensing to activate airblast segregation of certain rocks, normally the smallest mass to keep compressed air costs down.The forerunner of modern sorting is probably magnetic separation, which utilizes an inherent property of certain ores to divert it into mag and non-mags fractions. Radiometric ore sorters, which have been applied successfully for decades in the pre-concentration of uranium ores (Wotruba and Riedel, 2006) initiated modern sorting. In the 90’s, sensor-based machine sorting became a viable means of increasing the overall economic recovery of a resource. This technology became driven by the availability of low cost computing equipment and the concurrent development of algorithms, and by the availability of extremely fast response sensors and air actuators, allowing the sorting equipment to run faster, dropping the cost per tonne. It has been in industrial minerals processing that rock sorting has been most widely adopted, not really surprising. Liberation occurs on a different scale than in the base metal industry. Most industrial minerals are mined from massive deposits, requiring (in the past) no upgrading. Many of these operations now run into product contamination problems, which ore sorting can solve. One illustration: in Finland, a quarry is separating limestone from dolomite at 500 tonnes / hour, with individual rocks weighing up to 15 kg. Many of these industrial minerals operations have stockpiles of earlier discarded below-quality rocks, now being reprocessed with the help of ore sorting. The economics of this are very favourable, going from zero or negative value (stockpiles can not be left when closing the mine) to full product value for at least a portion of the stockpile. This suggests that in the future the economics of overburden sorting could become attractive under the right circumstances and such treatment could well become an integral part of open pit mine development."

An excavation, within which a tunnel is sunk as a part of the Centraal Station underground station (platform section) of the Noord/Zuidlijn (&apos;North/South Line&apos;), is to be created beneath the Amsterdam Centraal (&apos;Amsterdam Central&apos;) station. The section beneath Amsterdam Centraal Station is characterised by the application of a particular technology in the form of, inter alia, the so-called &apos;sandwich wall&apos;. This is a composite wall consisting of two rows of Tubex piles with a body of jetgrout columns in-between. This wall acts both as an excavation support wall and also provides vertical bearing. The installation of the wall, including both Tubex piles and jetgrout columns, within these specific conditions (limited height, sensitive historical building), within the design requirements set in terms of construction tolerance and water and soil retention, may be regarded as being a pioneering achievement. The environmental constraints are that the trains should continue to run, the inconvenience to passengers should be kept to a minimum and the historic station should not suffer any damage. Because of the complexity of the working conditions, the project is being overseen by a steering group of experts in the specified construction processes. In order to manage the project risks, jet grouting trials were initially carried out, in order to highlight and control execution problems; the practicability of the design is then tested. Work commenced on the sandwich wall in 2003, when the wooden piles were extracted at the locations where the sandwich wall was to be constructed; in 2004, the steel Tubex piles for the southern wall sections were installed. From May 2005, the construction of the sandwich wall got under way; in addition to the described process supervision, an extensive measuring programme was established, so that the process could be adjusted as necessary and the quality of the finished product determined. This applied to both individual columns and for the end product, the sandwich wall. The measurement results were processed for each column, interpreted and the effect on the work still to be conducted was assessed for each future column. Preventative and corrective measures were, if necessary, taken in order to control or counteract the measured defect. In addition to the process-oriented and qualitative measurements, various independent measurement systems at the station building served as a further control in order to prevent damage to the building.

Genesis 1:28 "And God blessed them and God said he fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth and subdue it and have dominion over it." Genesis 2:15 "And the Lord God made man and put him in the garden to dress it and keep it." Depending on one&apos;s perspective, these two verses from the Book of Genesis either complement one another or are in conflict. I believe that they are complementary. What they imply is that where there is privilege, there is responsibility. Privilege comes from the fact that the Lord created the heavens and the earth and he placed man on the earth to have dominion over it. The responsibility that accrues to us comes when the Lord also said that we are accountable for how we handle that which he has given us. The very nature of our responsibilities in resource utilization or, more appropriately, resource management, has changed over time as the nation&apos;s needs and priorities have changed. Thus, I have attempted to examine, from a historical perspective, how natural resource policy has evolved, where we are now and what may lie ahead.

The CTC (Certified Trading Chains) mineral certification system has been piloted in Rwanda since late 2008. CTC project implementation is jointly driven by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) and the Rwanda Geology and Mines Authority (OGMR), in cooperation with other national stakeholders. Five Rwandan mineral producers participate in the CTC project with their flagship mining concessions. Based on independent third-party audits, CTC certifies supply chain due diligence measures of these companies engaged in the artisanal mining sector through on-the-ground assessments of mining conditions, transparency, as well as mineral origin and traceability. The CTC system thus allows responsible mineral producers and their clients to verifiably demonstrate supply chain due diligence and good governance in conflict-affected and high-risk areas.

The lignite resource in the southern part of the South Island is New ZealandÆs largest source of indigenous primary energy. The ten deposits evaluated by the Liquid Fuels Trust Board (LFTB) have a total recoverable reserve of 6.2 billion tones equivalent to 74 000 PJ of energy or 20 times the original energy content of the Maui gas field. Updating the economics of the original LFTB studies indicates that lignite could be mined for between NZ$1.0 and 3.0/GJ. Its conversion to synthesis gas for production of petroleum products, chemical methanol, ammonia/urea fertiliser or electricity would be in the national benefit and likely to be commercially economic at todayÆs product prices.

This paper discusses the background, requirements, need and content of plans for management of drinking water self-supplied to mining-related operations, including construction camps, especially in remote areas of Western Australia. The paper discusses the importance of cooperation between regulators, the mine site operator and the consultant in preparing a plan fully compliant with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines to protect the quality and safety of drinking water supplied to mine sites. The paper outlines some of the issues that need to be addressed in preparing a drinking water quality management plan, such as hazard identification, risk assessment, the multiple-barrier approach and the concept of critical control points. Too often, a mine’s operations, including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, processing, etc., are considered independent steps, rather then a continuous process. In fact, these are interdependent operations with each step in the process having an impact on subsequent operations. If the effectiveness of the drilling and blasting operations can be improved, they will impact the entire mining process. Some of the resulting improvements include: level benches on grade; fragmentation and diggability with the result being reduced loading times; haul cycles improvements; and the crushing and milling operations will be more efficient and less energy consumed. Thunderbird refers to this as “Drill to Mill” information cycle or process. This paper focuses on two of the technological enhancements Thunderbird has added to its drill monitors that allow the mines to impact the “Drill to Mill” concept. These enhancements are: incorporating global positioning satellites into drill monitors; and radio off-loading of data.

The Hg and Sb deposits of the Mediterranean and Circum-Pacific Belts are often found at elevated structural levels, suggesting that their preferential occurrence in young orogenic belts is not a fundamental metallogenic feature but merely reflects their chances of surviving post-orogenic peneplanation. In western Europe their emplacement appears often to be related to late orogenic extensional events accompanied by a notable increase in heat flow. Although Nikitovka and Almaden have quite different settings, both appear to be related to deep-reaching shears. Together with brittle fault zones at higher levels, these provided pathways for fluid phases that originated at least partially within the mantle. The Nikitovka deposits are located in the Donets segment of the 2 000 km Pripyat-Dniepr-Donets palaeorift in the East European Platform. Initiated in the mid-Devonian with a possible Precambrian precursor, its listric boundary faults displace the Moho from a depth of about 50 km north and south of the rift to 35 km along the axes of the Pripyat and Dniepr segments. The steep central anticline of the Donets segment, within which the main Hg-Sb district is located, is interpreted to be associated with a reactivated fault reaching into the upper mantle. The Almaden syncline, formed during the Variscan Orogeny, may be an older pull-apart basin or half-graben associated with the collapse of the Cadomian Orogenic Belt. It is situated on a major ENE-WSW-striking shear zone which may represent a Late Cadomian transfer zone reaching into the mantle
