By 2045, carbon-neutral mines will be economically producing products that are vital for the world’s transition to renewable energy. After overcoming significant technical challenges (and the investment of significant capital), leaders have successfully eliminated the use of diesel and other fossil fuels by introducing a wide range of new decarbonisation technologies. These leaders will be reaping the benefits of lower production costs (resulting from elimination of diesel), stable and predictable operations, and easier access to capital for their future projects. This paper describes a future scenario of how a net zero carbon and zero-entry mine could operate by taking maximum advantage of technologies in development or already proven in other industries. Some miners have been unsuccessful in their efforts to reach decarbonisation targets. Instead, they have been forced to close or offload their assets to be acquired by operators with better sustainability credentials, or, in some cases, to indigenous or community-based enterprises with vested interest in making operations viable and sustainable. Regardless of ownership structure, all successful mining operations will have fostered strong and positive community relations that bring education, health, security and economic development opportunities to the communities while respecting their traditions, land-uses and culture. As shallow, easy to mine deposits have become scarce, the majority of new mines are underground. Advancements in electric underground technology and the feasibility of ‘zero entry mining’ (with no personnel in active mining zones) has made it increasingly possible to economically operate underground mines, even at shallow depths. The newest mines have a near zero footprint on the surface, produce no harmful by-products, and are employing in-place or in situ methods of extraction that are efficient and low impact. Surface land-uses, such as agriculture and renewable energy generation, continue in the immediate vicinity of the mine, with no significant ground disturbance, community impact or environmental footprint.

The studies previously made on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace have dealt with the custom smelter of the International Smelting Co. at Tooele, Utah, and on the smelter of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Smelting Co. at Kellogg, Idaho. The International plant may be considered representative of the traditional custom smelter. The lead smelter of the future seemingly will have to treat increasingly richer lead charges. This feature was then stressed in describing the Bunker Hill plant.

The materials containing copper which are refined in the United Statrs, are, for the most part, the natiye noppers of Lake Superior. IJntil quite recently but little pig copper Was made for sale, and that came principally from the pure sulphorous ores of New England and the Sonth, and was generally sdd to reSneries not far from the ore filrnaceu. A stnall aiuoiint found its way into the'niarket which was produced either as the by-product of the treatment of gold and silver ores, or as the result of the treatment of impure copper ores; but both these grades, on account of the impurities they contained, were loolced on with stlspicion, and were not sought for. A11 the grtlGis of pig coppcr are sold by the unit of oopper contents, a great redtiction being made in the price when impurities are present. There are at the present time only three works which treat native copper, the two of the Detroit and Lake Superior copper Company, and the works of C:G. Hussey & Co., in Pittsburgh. There are a few works ivhich smelt sulphuroris ores and refine their pig; bo sides these t1le1-e arc a few siuall works where gig copper is refined uuly. Some of these purcIlase blscir copper, refine scrap, or simply refine such grades of ingot copper as are found in the market, but nlostly that from Lake Superior, for the purpose of getting it into swh shapes that can be handled cpmtriercially to advantage, such as in making large plates or high grades of wire fir electrical purposes. The Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company is situated in the Klerks-dorp district of the Province of the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 100 miles west of Johannesburg. Gold production commenced in January 1957 and Uranium treatment of residue slimes as a by-product started in July 1957. The mining property is 5435 mining claims in extent, the equivalent of 7,988 acres or 12.5 square miles. The mine was initially exploited by the Pioneer Twin Shaft System, consisting of a 26 feet diameter down-cast shaft and a 22 feet diameter up-cast shaft, sunk in the north-west area of the mine to cater for the hoisting and ventilation requirements for a milling rate of 150,000 tons per month.

The objective of this research was to investigate the interaction phenomena of rock and types of rock bolts to develop design principals for using grouted roof bolts. The investigation was to determine the effectiveness of grouted bolts in resisting lateral displacement and axial separation along fracture planes, and also to determine if grouted bolts eliminate the axial tensile stress near the anchor and the resulting rock fracture. The first year's effort involved defining the post-tensioning response of grouted bars and determining the amount of shear resistance generated by conventional and resin-grouted bolts. A finite-element analysis showed that if the rock and resin grout behave in an elastic manner, the post tensioning of a grouted bar will affect mine roof stability only if movement occurs near the collar. An experimental shear test program revealed that both conventional bolts and resin-grouted reinforcing bars significantly increase shear resistance along fracture or bedding plane when the average normal compressive stress on that plane is low (in the order of 25 psi) and when the bolt is oriented so that the shear displacement tends to lengthen the bolt. An increase in shear resistance is also noted at the higher normal pressure of 250 psi; however, the increase is small compared to the corresponding shear resistance without a bolt. Conventional bolts oriented so that they tended to loosen with shear displacement added no significant shear resistance.

The location, features, qualities, and extent of iron occurrences and the associated resources--limestone and dolomite, bentonite, coal-lignite, petroleum and natural gas, power, and water--are evaluated. The results of pioneer beneficiation tests on South Dakota taconite are discussed. In addition, pertinent features of taconite development, cost factors, the Western and Central United States trade area and markets are reported. The State's production of iron ores until 1963 has been small and for purposes other than the manufacture of iron. This investigation disclosed the probability of large resources of taconite in Pennington and Lawrence Counties. The average iron content is 29 percent, and a 65-percent or better iron concentrate might be produced. Ample resources are available for mining and processing taconite. An investment of at least $26 million would be required for a plant capable of turning out 1 million tons of agglomerated iron concentrate per year. The feasibility of such an enterprise is indicated, but intensive investigation and research must be completed to justify such an investment,

THE year 1939 has seen the iron and steel industry driving for efficiency with unabated zeal. "Efficiency" is here used in the sense of enabling the customer to do more with less, either supplying him with more economically priced steels or with higher priced steels that will do a job more economically. The plain carbon steels have been improved tremendously in quality be- cause of recent control tests. All steel companies have been urged to hold to .closer chemical control, closer standards, soundness, and more control on grain size, and now attention is being directed to closer control of hardening properties. Better control of open- hearth operations undoubtedly will result in an increase in the application of special carbon steel. Further, with a better understanding of quenching, the present trend to study the quenching of this class of steels will be ex- tended. These steels will then be used for purposes to which they are best suited. Utilization of special carbon bars and large shapes seems to be developing less slowly than special car- bon in the form of strip. There are many reasons for this and the future development of this trend will be important. Continued development of the manufacture of parts from strip and sheet to replace forgings, and of formed; structural members such as channels or welded pipe, is notable. Special carbon sheets with nonaging properties have been produced during the year; they maintain a higher degree of ductility over a longer time and are less sensitive to the changes which took place in the former product when stocked.

The contents emphasize personnel health and safety aspects and engineering design and control practices to ensure a productive health and safety environment. Reference is to the health and safety of the individual miners as well as to the safety of the working environment. This Handbook also contains references to health and safety regulations in Chapter 3.2 and environmental protection in Chapters 3.4 and 7.3.

The revised inspection standards or recommendations herein have been prepared for use in Federal inspection of bituminous-coal and lignite mines. They succeed a compilation of similar standards published as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7268 in December 1943 and employed as a guide in Federal inspections since that time. Important alterations and additions have been made because of changes in mining, practice and temporary shortages of some safety equipment; moreover, several previous standards have been found not generally applicable and have accordingly been deleted. Mining methods and equipment continue to change, and new hazards and new safeguards are introduced. Consequently, these standards are subject to revision from time to time. Questions from the coal-mining industry regarding these standards and suggestions as to changes and additions thereto will be welcomed and considered carefully when the next revision is made. Many constructive criticisms from the mining industry have been considered in preparing this edition.

Mining camps can be divided roughly into two types-the large, opulent settlement that blooms like the rose about a strong mine in full operation; and the puny group of adobe huts, or calamina shacks, or even canvas tents flung down in the wilderness to shelter the gay pioneers of a shining prospect or the shattered survivors of a lost hope. Of the first, I know nothing; but in the second, I have spent some of my best years, and from its curious code of morals and manners, its comic hates and its unreasoning loves, its high impatience and its engulfing kindness, I have charted the narrow .and pitted path which must be trod by the woman who would success¬fully live therein.

With staff productivity and retention a crucial factor in the longevity of AustraliaÆs mining industry, some mining companies are increasing their focus on the health and well-being of their people, to minimise the risks of deteriorating health in an ageing workforce. Many of AustraliaÆs mining operations rely heavily on long distance commuter (LDC) rosters, which are argued to have a significant impact upon worker health, wellbeing and lifestyle choices. The potential impact of workforce health on mine safety performance, efficiency and operating practice is an interesting additional line of enquiry. Food choice, exercise and recreation initiatives offer living and working conditions that æempower healthy choicesÆ in the shift worker community, but do not guarantee improved worker wellbeing. This paper explores first-hand the experiences of one individual over two and a half years of employment at different mine sites, under different shift conditions and across different operating crews. The production of all Russian fields incressed from approsimatctly 74,000,000 bbl. during 1926-27, to approximately 83,000,000 bbl. during 1927-28. Of this amount Baku was responsible for 54,.500,000 bbl., Grozny for 25,800,000 bbl., and Emba for 1,200,000 bbl. Accordingly, the proportional importance of the Grozny oil field has been considerably increased, the present production being twice that of 1913. The most notable factor of production during 1927-28 was the importance of gushers; 40.8 per cent. of the total was thus obtained. In the Baku fields 26 per cent. of the total, and in Grozny 74.2 percent'. of the total were produced by naturally flowing wells. This may be explained by the reduction in authorizations for drilling by the central authorities, and, accordingly, the local trusts increased the production to the planned figures at the expense of the proved prolific reserves. In Baku region, the Surnkany oil field produced 36.1 per cent. of the total Baku production, or an equivalent of 53,800 bbl. per clay, the largest percentage coining from the fifth horizon. Nest year's plans call for continual development of that horizon as well as of the sixteenth horizon in the Bibi-Eibat field, which was opened lately. In the Grozny fields the New Area (Bellik) WAS responsible for 79.4 per cent. of the total production. The authorized plan for 1928-29 production calls for 92,200,000 bid., and a reasonably accurate estimate for 1932--33 production is placed at. 156,000,000 bbl., with Baku contributing 101,800,000 bbl., Grozny 44,100,000 bbl., Emba 6,200,000 bbl., Kuban 2,100,000 bbl., Saghalien Island 1,400,000 bbl., and Russian Turkestan 400,000 bbl. In connection with recent discoverices in the Baku area these figures art. quite conservative. The average production per well per day in the Baku oil fields was 49.2 bbl., in Grozny 175 bbl.; in detail, Surakany oil field averaged 250 bbl., and the New Area in Grozny 514 bbl. per day. New completions in all Baku fields averaged 264 bbl. per day, and in Grozny 970 bbl. pel. day. These figures show a considerable progress in the technical developnlent of all fields, compared even with the prerevolution figures, since all the mprovements are noted in the fields that arc over 30 years old.

Abstract - Quartz veins at the Mufferaw gold prospect and Komis gold deposit, northern Saskatchewan, are examples of oblique-extension veins that crystallized in shear and tensile fractures, which propagated and then opened oblique to their walls during a single continuous deformation event. The Mufferaw gold prospect consists of an interlinked mesh of conjugate shear fractures, tensile fractures, and veins. Oblique-extension veins crystallized in conjugate shear fractures, which opened during dilation of intersecting tensile fractures under the same far-field stress system. At the Komis gold mine, tensile and dextral shear fractures cut across granodiorite dikes. The tensile fractures formed perpendicular to the dike margins during stress transfer from the less-competent country rocks to the more-competent dikes. During extension of the dikes oblique to the bulk extension direction in the country rocks, the tensile fractures were reactivated as sinistral shear fractures. The reactivated tensile fractures and dextral shear fractures opened oblique to their walls, parallel to the bulk extension direction, and were sealed by the deposition of oblique-extension veins during the same deformation event.

The present paper describes a number of experiments with fine silver, coin silver, silver-cadmium oxide and silver-nickei-copper compacts, prepared by powder metallurgical methods. The test data are of a preliminary nature, since most of the work was exploratory. Fine Silver Eject of Compacting Pressure on Hardness and Density during Cold and Hot Pressing The cold-welding properties of silver have received considerable attention and the welding characteristics are functions of such variables as: cleanliness of metal particles (impurities and adsorbed gases), chemical nobility of particles, plasticity and hardness, particle assortment, particle shape, particle porosity, apparent density, temperature, pressure, time, recrystalliza-tion characteristics. Chemical nobility, plasticity and low temperature of recrystallization after work-hardening are responsible for the excellent low-temperature bonding properties of silver. Several series of compacts were pressed at pressures of 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 70 and 80 tons per square inch, at temperatures of 32°C. (room temperature), l00°, 2000, 300°, 400°, and 450°C. Silver powder of minus 325-mesh, produced by displacing silver from a nitrate solution by means of copper, was used. The density was calcuiated from accurately measured and weighed compacts. The hardness was measured on the Rockwell F scale. The investigation shows that an increase in pressure promotes a higher density and hardness regardless of pressing temperature, up to a temperature of 400° C. The pressure-density curves at various pressing temperatures are shown in Fig. I, the pressure-hardness curves at various pressing temperatures, in Fig. z. The greatest increase in both hardness and density was obtained in the pressure range of 5 to 20 tons per square inch. A compact from each series was annealed at 300°C. in air, for various lengths of time. The hardness values after annealing are shown in Table I. A minimum hardness was obtained after one hour of annealing. No change in density occurred during annealing. The maximum density was obtained at 80 tons per sq. in., and at this pressure the hardness is equal to that of hard-drawn wrought

Rockfall drapery systems are commonly used as a simple, fast and cheap measure against the rock falling trajectories affecting very steep slopes. The system basically consists of a steel mesh, which is held on the top edge with a longitudinal cable fixed by means of a suitable number of anchors. The effect of this kind of intervention is to control the falls of the rocks, which are driven toward the bottom with slow velocity, or are stabilized on place. It can be used on any kind of slope to protect sensitive target in the mining industry, roads and railways, and inhabited areas. The falling blocks, typically smaller than 0.6 - 1.0 m in diameter, pile up into a trench (or into a ?pocket of mesh?) at the bottom. In comparison to other types of rockfall interventions, the simple drapery is cheaper, and its maintenance is easier, but on the other hand it cannot be considered the remedy for shallow instabilities, because it can only mitigate the effect of the falling trajectories. The design of simple draperies requires the analysis of several factors like the slope features (height, gradient, morphology), the geological and dynamic features (nature of the ground or rock, type of instability, erosion problem, blocks size), the environmental condition (presence of vegetation, aesthetical problem), the installation problem (accesses to the slope, safety for the workers, safety for the surrounding areas) and finally the performance required (temporary or permanent intervention, required maintenance, cost). Finally the most problematic design-step is the choice of the suitable mesh, the top longitudinal cable, and the top anchors type. Because of the highly variable nature of rockfall behaviour these structures cannot be standardized, but they have to be analyzed and designed for each case. Maccaferri has developed a new software application (MacRO 2) has a practical tool to define the mesh and the related supporting structure composed by up-slope cable and anchors. The software, based on the approach proposed by Muhunthan B. et al. (2005), allows designers to verify the top longitudinal cable, the anchors, and the mesh drapery, and to plan for maintenance procedures. Even if the method seems quite simple and rough, it is effective and lets the designer correctly foresee the materials and the geometrical features to be used on the interventions. This paper analyses the condition for the simple drapery installation, the main steps for the calculations, and it will present a case study in a U.S. mine. Nevertheless, even if the software allows a quick and simple calculation approach, onsite observations are always recommended in order to achieve a good design, with the ultimate goal of protecting property and human lives.

"One of the contributing factors to the extreme cost escalation in the first decade of the 21st century was the increase in the amount and cost of engineering work that went into studies and projects. Various reasons for this were identified, including unsatisfactory productivity due to a shortage of experienced/qualified engineers, the increased complexity and infrastructure requirements of many projects due to location, metallurgy that is more challenging and increasing environmental and social requirements. These conditions often led to unsatisfactory project results in terms of cost and schedule blowouts and created a loss of confidence – both internally and externally – in the industry’s ability to complete projects on time and on budget.Technical fundamentals aside, the experience and effectiveness of project teams has had, and continues to have, a major impact on project cost, schedule and ramp-up to nameplate capacity and operating parameters. There are unfortunately too many examples of where project teams have not been as effective as they could or should have been, all to the ultimate detriment of the project.Using the authors’ extensive experience on both owner’s and engineer’s teams, this paper discusses some of the main reasons for suboptimal team, and hence project, performance and offers thoughts on how best to build and maintain project teams. The analysis and conclusions drawn are built around the Tuckman model of group development known as ‘forming-storming-norming-performing’, which was first proposed some 50 years ago. "A study has been done of the scale-up of laboratory bench-scale flotation to continuous plant circuit performance. It was found that the impellor speed and the air flow rate influenced the results and in this case extreme values of these operating variables were required in order to reproduce the plant rougher results in the laboratory. Despite the experimental uncertainty introduced by these extreme values, it was demonstrated that the plant performance could be predicted and experimentally reproduced with bench-scale tests.IntroductionThe mineral processing industry relies heavily on batch flotation testwork to design flowsheets, evaluate reagent s and compare various types of ore. The batch tests are generally regarded as being directly comparable within themselves, but quite often they relate poorly or not at all to continuous circuits. Obviously this dilemma generates considerable uncertainty with wide-ranging ramifications. One of the manifestations of this unfortunate situation is the commonly expressed opinion that ""it may work that way in the laboratory, but it will never work that way in the plant"".In a previous publication, a method was described whereby the results of batch bench-scale tests could be used to simulate a locked cycle flotation test series. The work to be described here is a continuation of that investigation with an extension to the simulation of an actual plant circuit. It would have been preferable to progress from laboratory batch data to a continuous pilot plant and then finally to a full-scale plant operation. However, because that possibility did not present itself, an attempt will be made to show that the performance of an existing plant circuit can be successfully simulated from batch data. The success of the procedure can be judged by the agreement among the plant results, a locked cycle test and the predicted results based on batch tests."
