The design of tailings containment structures relies on well-understood engineering methods being applied consistently. Unfortunately, not all facilities are designed or managed to the same level of competency. To standardize procedures, the Mining Association of Canada (MAC, 1998) prepared a “Guide to Tailings Management.” It recommended review of designs and an assessment of the risks associated with tailings impoundments be implemented during all phases of amine life. This paper describes how the quantitative risk assessment (QRA) process can be used to define risks associated with the design, construction and operation of a tailings management facility. And it discusses how, once the risk tolerability curves (RTC) are defined for a project, they can assist the risk management (RM) process.

The coal-bearing rocks in Iowa occur in an arcuate belt across the central and southern parts of the State (fig. 1) at the northern end of the Western Interior coal field. Coal beds of minable thickness are sporadic throughout this area and are mined principally in the three districts indicated by dark shading on the index map, although coal occurs also in the areas indicated by light shading. The coal is mostly of high-volatile C bituminous rank in all parts of the State. SURFACE FEATURES The coal-bearing rocks in Iowa are concealed for the most part by a covering of glacial drift ranging in thickness from a few feet to several hundred feet. This covering has been dissected to form a gently rolling upland, rising from an elevation of 466 feet at the mouth of the Des Moines River to about 1,200 feet in Calhoun County in the central part of the State. The local relief, however, rarely exceeds 150 to 200 feet.

TONIGHT I want to speak of the current problems and the postwar difficulties facing American industry. American industry has done an outstanding job in adjusting its operations to wartime necessity. The national income for 1942 was nearly $120,000,090,000 and of this outlay approximately $55,000,000,000 went for war material. The enormity of the expenditures for war material is indicated by the fact that the expenditures for war purposes alone were greater than the annual gross national income in the period 1931-34. This tremendous production job in turning out a record output of war products was accomplished by industry in spite of a large number of restraining and hampering influences, and I want to mention several of the more important problems.

The silver deposits of Rockvale near Armidale, N.S.W., occur in fissure veins in epi-Permian granite. The ore is fine grained, mineralogically complex, and contains twenty-seven different minerals including eleven silver minerals. The ore is characterized by a unique multiple unmixing from a sphalerite solvent. The following minerals have exsolved from solid solution in sphalerite: pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, cubanite I, cubanite II (chalcopyrrhotite), valleriite, "brown" stannite, "olive" stannite, argentian tetrahedrite, pyrargyrite, and an unknown grey-white mineral. Several of these minerals derive from a second-stage unmixing, the immediate solvents of which are the products of earlier exsolutions.INTRODUCTIONSmall silver-rich base metal deposits occur at several localities near Armidale in the New England district of New South Wales. Chief among these are the Tulloch Mine and the Rockvale Mine at Rockvale, 27 miles SE. of Armidale, and the Tait's Gulley deposits some 15 miles NE. of Armidale.At Rockvale (Kenny, 1928), irregular lenses of lode material, principally quartz and calcite, occur along a zone of shearing in biotite granite and altered sediments. The orebodies had a maximum width of 6 ft but averaged 2 ft 6 in. The largest lens was 150 ft long and 50 ft high. The Rockvale deposits were worked for both arsenic and silver; 2,897 tons of arsenic were produced but no figures are available forsilver.Little is known of the Tait's Gulley deposits which occur in folded arenites containing small but rich veins of pyrargyrite with base metal sulphides.The sediments in these localities are possibly Silurian.

This report is a study of the impact of Federal laws and regulations on the domestic supply of metallic and nonmetallic minerals. The study was confined to pertinent environmental legislation and the recently enacted Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977. Emphasized were the legal requirements placed on individual selected mineral industries, and the economic impact of these requirements. A certain amount of attention was also directed to the particular environmental and health and safety problems generated by selected mineral industries. The study also pinpointed a list of major problem areas having significant impact on the domestic mineral supply.

An award is a form of recognition given for superior performance in a special field of endeavor. Each year awards are given by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the National Safety Council to the coal-mining industry's underground and open-pit mines that have worked a specific number of man-hours without a lost-time injury. These awards have a dual significance in that they prove efficiency can be attained without injury to persons. Safety awards do not result from luck or good fortune but do result from sincere desire coupled with sufficient effort and cooperation to achieve a desired goal.

Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project is under construction using shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) for a total length in excess of 50 km. Phase 1 of the project included 36 km of tunnel divided into four lots (1, 2, 3, and 4) of nine km each. Lots 3 and 4 of this tunnel for a total length of 18 km were combined into one award and have been constructed using a double shield (DS) TBM or one path system. Extreme ground convergence in some sections of the tunnel has stalled TBM performance in early reaches, due to face collapse and shield jammings. This paper presents the latest update on the tunnel progress and impact of ground convergence on machine performance based on the information obtained from field observations. Also, the method and results of tunnel convergence measurements were studied in conjunction with geological parameters and an attempt was made to correlate TBM operational parameters and ground convergence. The result of the analysis indicates a good correlation between machine?s operational parameter and tunnel convergence and can be used as an indicator of the potential for high rates of convergence. An early warning on ground convergence is essential for taking precautionary measures to avoid TBM jamming and related long delays and costs.

Barite, the natural sulfate of barium (BaSO4), is the most important barium mineral. Normally it is white (opaque to translucent), but impurities sometimes render it yellow, gray, blue, brown, red, or black. Brown or red stains are commonly caused by iron oxide. Barite is unusually heavy (specific gravity, about 4.5); in fact, it is one of the heaviest of the nonmetallic minerals. It is brittle and fractures unevenly. The hardness of barite ranges from 2.5 to 3 but is usually about 3. It can be scratched by a copper coin. Pure barite contains 65.7 percent BaO and A.3 percent S03. Much of the crude barite ore mined, however, contains impurities; thus it has a lower content of barite and consequently less barium oxide. Commercial analyses show its total BaSO4 content. Barium also occurs in nature as the mineral witherite (BaCO3), which, however, is not common in the United States, and commercial deposits have been found only in California. Witherite is a yellowish-white, light-gray, or Kite mineral with a specific gravity of about 3, a hardness of 3 to 4, and an uneven to subconchoidal fracture.

Gentlemen, my subject today is glass reinforced plastics. By definition, this encompasses a wide variety of materials: at least a half dozen basic varieties of polyester, epoxy, and phenolic; virtually infinite compounding variations within the basic groups: literally limitless variations in the amount and the nature of the glass reinforcing. Complicating all of this is the fact that different modes of application of the same material fall appreciably alter' the product's general strength and suitability. These many, many differing materials are what we conveniently call "glass reinforced plastics" or, more simply, fiberglass". This common name is actually a large part of the problem when dealing with fiberglass materials. Far too often a specification is written calling for simply "fiberglass reinforced polyester', based on successful prior use of a polyester laminate. Such a specification is very nearly worthless since such tremendous variation is possible under it. Success of a laminate furnished under such a specification is entirely dependent on good fortune

In 2005, NIOSH and Badger Mining Corporation entered a partnership to implement ergonomic interventions, including a systematic process, to address exposures to risk factors that may result in musculoskeletal disorders or other types of injuries/illnesses. As a result of this partnership, an ergonomics process was integrated with the existing safety and health program to promote an on-going application of ergonomic principles, and over 40 task-specific interventions were implemented during the first year of the process. This paper presents details of the process integration, and several examples of task-specific interventions that reduced exposures to risk factors.

The key-note of good writing, as of good manners, is B natural. Sincerity is the first requisite for effective writing. When a man says what he knows or believes, he is likely to be interesting, because each human being possesses an individuality, a point of view, or a range of sympathy that makes him different from his fellows. To say or to write what you do no6 think, for the mere sake of talking or writing, is a verbal exercise that must be performed with extraordinary skill if it is to be attractive. Affectations are rarely attractive, rarely effective. To be natural is to be yourself, not a poseur; to give the reader the best of yourself, instead of re-warming the baked meats of yesterday. Quotations-which are second-hand thoughts-will serve occasionally when the thing you want to say has been said so well by another that it would be waste of energy to try to say it better; but, as a rule, the utterance of the writer himself is more interesting than the quotation, because the writer brings something of himself to bear on the subject, and for the moment is more in touch with the reader than any dear departed author. Therefore, say things as best you can in your own way, neither in borrowed words nor in the phraseology that mimics another. Write as if you were speaking to a person whom you desire to persuade or convince. You will then write better than you speak, because, in the first place, you can be more deliberate, and, secondly, you can revise what you have written. The Aitik copper mine is located in the north of Sweden and the concentrator at the mine started its operation in 1968 with a capacity of 2 Mton ore per year. Since then the operation has expanded several times, and today the capacity is 18 Mton ore per year. A new expansion plan was investigated in 2005, however the building of a new concentrator was found to be a better solution, giving a lower cost, a longer lifetime and more concentrates to the smelter at the coast. Several choices have been evaluated regarding the location of the concentrator?s crushing, grinding, dewatering, process control and water systems. The energy cost comparison has been an important factor when evaluating the various choices. The single most important decision has been in choosing the grinding system. Once again the fully autogenous grinding system, favoured by Boliden, has proven to be the best solution. The location of the mill, high and near the tailing pond, gives lower transportation costs for the ore and tailings, compared to other locations. A new water system will lower the pumping cost, give better control of water circulation to the plant and create fewer problems with permafrost in the tailings disposal area. Molybdenum recovery will be installed in the new plant using a separate circuit. A gold leaching plant was also investigated. Gold leaching is planned for the pyrite concentrate from the chalcopyrite/pyrite separation and the concentrate from the desulphurisation circuit that will be installed on the bulk flotation tailings.

For nearly two decades water scientists have been debating the need to use appropriate models for the questions being asked and the data available. This paper puts forward a rationale for a hierarchical framework for water balance modelling as it applies to mine sites. The hierarchy is based on the complexity of models and their data requirements. Scientific models are the most complex and require the most data; next is engineering models, then systems models and the simplest representations are given by conceptual models. A position is put forward that systems models have a range of uses that the others do not provide. A systems model, called SiteMiser, is described and its calibration illustrated. The model is applied to seven coal mines from the Northern Bowen Basin in Central Queensland. Currently, there is little relationship between total water use and coal production. This relationship is not any stronger when fresh (raw) water is compared to reused water. Leading practice water use levels are simulated for all sites. The simulation results demonstrate that there is considerable opportunity to reduce water consumption and, in particular, to import less fresh (raw) water to the sites.

This report summarizes the results of a review of foreign coal mining literature conducted under the Bureau's Advancing Coal Mining Technology program. In addition to a discussion on the historical development of mechanized longwall systems, and the current state-of-the-art method in Europe, this report summarizes the previous and ongoing Bureau efforts to adapt longwall technology to U.S. conditions. The bibliographic section of this report, divided into major categories such as mine design, face management, roadway development, strata control, powered roof supports, coal winning, conveying, and automation, contains over a thousand individual entries. The purpose of this report is to provide U.S. mining engineers with background information on longwall methodology and equipment developed in foreign countries (principally Europe). The Bureau of Mines, as part of its Advancing Coal Mining Technology program, is funding R&D projects to demonstrate that the longwall mining method, successfully used in the deep mines of Europe, can boost productivity and improve safety in certain U.S. mines.

The objective of this program was to develop a system to extinguish coal mine fires by remote sealing of the underground passageways. The system developed had to be versatile enough to function under a wide range of operating conditions, including large variations in passageway geometry, depth of mine, water conditions, both in the mine and at the surface, and rubble in the mine passage. The system developed had to include instrumentation for the remote probing of the passageway prior to sealing, a system for sealing the mine passages, and instrumentation for remote monitoring of the quality of the seal during and after construction. These objectives were successfully achieved during this program. The remote mine sealing capability of the system was satisfactorily demonstrated in a field test conducted at the Eastern Associated Coal Corporation Federal No, 1 Mine in Grant Town, West Virginia.

FABRICATION of semiconductor devices.requires the formation of electrical contacts, often involving the use of lead, tin, and lead-tin solders. In several recent instances when germanium had been bonded to nickel with lead, a new metallic phase appeared, unattached to either germanium or nickel, but rather suspended as a continuous foil wholly contained within the lead matrix. Since such metallic structures do not form in nickel-lead or lead-germanium systems under identical conditions, a brief study was made of the characteristics and possible formation mechanisms of this material. The methods of reinforcement to be discussed in this paper are all insitu methods, ones that can be used on the soil structure as it exists in the ground, and do not rely on excavation and replacement of the soil. Current practice in the United States, as well as new ideas and methods, will be discussed as they relate to slope stability, retaining walls, and to other uses such as control of mine or cavity related subsidence and to liquefaction control under existing structures. The method is based on the concept of "nailing" or reinforcing the soil in place, and thereby causing a mass of soil to act as a coherent unit. When performed properly, a true gravity structure can be constructed, one that will remain intact under both horizontal and vertical loadings and that will also resist vibrational and seismic loadings.
