The MMG Century mine, which is the largest zinc/lead mine in Australia, began operating in 1999 and ceased mining from the open pit in July 2015, with processing completed in early 2016. Closure plans were developed from 2006, and detailed planning for closure commenced in early 2011 with the appointment of a dedicated closure planning resource. The site will continue to be managed during the active and passive closure phases to complete rehabilitation commitments and demonstrate that closure completion criteria have been achieved.Completion of the mining/processing phase of the project provides an opportunity to reflect on successes, missed opportunities and lessons learnt with respect to planning and execution of mine closure. This paper highlights examples of success at Century and also identifies key learnings and areas for improvement in progressive closure outcomes. Specific examples examine mine planning and execution involving bulk movement of waste rock and construction of permanent waste encapsulation landforms. The paper also provides recommendations for other sites that are planning for closure.Decisions made during the operational phase of the project life can result in a significant increase in closure liability and reduce the likelihood of achieving lease relinquishment. The mining industry responded to public concerns about use of cyanide by developing a voluntary certification to allow companies to demonstrate their commitment. The International Cyanide Code (Code) establishes standards for the manufacture, transportation and use of cyanide. Key concepts in closure planning to comply with the Code are to decommission all facilities related to cyanide operations and to provide a financial assurance mechanism for those activities. Code requirements may differ from state-specific regulations, but requirements are based on closure goals for protection of the human health and the environment. Only issues related to cyanide operations are required to be included in decommissioning demonstrations. For example, the disposal method of cyanide solution holding tanks and the cost must be included in the closure plan, but information regarding closure of roads is not required. Closure costs must be based on a third-party contractor as opposed to internal budgets. Compliance with the closure requirements of the Code allows companies to show their stockholders, lending institutions, and the public that their operations are environmentally responsible.

The Bardon Trimount, Inc. stone quarry in Ashland, Massachusetts was the recent subject of a quarry closure review report. The quarry produces aggregate using standard drilling and blasting techniques. Stone is processed at an on-site plant. Noise monitoring data collected during the closure review indicate that the quarry generally operates within the quiet range. There is a decrease in noise while the quarry is not operating. Levels of dust associated with the quarry are low. Unpaved roadways are the greatest contributors of fugitive dust associated with the mining operation. The quarry cannot be seen from any homes within the town of Ashland, except during the winter months. The visual impact of the quarry on surrounding properties is minimal. Further quarry development is likely to reduce visibility of the quarry from some areas.

"Premature and unplanned mine closure can result in significant adverse impacts on the environment and community and need to be managed appropriately. Risk management techniques can reduce the negative impacts and risks of early mine closure. Risk Assessment 3D Model, is an efficient tool to quantify risk. The aim of this paper is to identify the mine closure risks in Choghart iron ore mine, and calculate the overall mine closure risk level. The result shows that 51.4% of assessed risks have low risk level and the overall risk level of early mine closure is low. Keywords: mine closure, risk assessment 3D model, Choghart iron ore mine INTRODUCTION The modern mining life-cycle can be divided into three main stages; exploration, mining (opening and production) and post mining (mine closure, and reclamation). Mine closure is the critical component of the modern mining life-cycle and it refers to the period of time when the operational stage of a mine has permanently ceases (Heikkinen et al, 2008). Planned closure occurs due to the depletion of ore reserves, but sometimes it is premature. Laurance (2006) shows that only 25% of mine closure in the past 30 years was due to resource depletion and in 75% of the cases the mines were closed for the other reasons. Ghanbari et al (2010) demonstrated that 48.6 % of copper mine closure in the past 100 years was due to resource depletion and 51.4 % of copper mines have been closed due to other reasons. The main reasons of premature mine closure are as follow (Laurance, 2006; Ghanbari et al, 2010; Maiti, 2013): • Economic, (low commodity prices or high costs) • Geological, (over-estimation of grade and tonnage) • Geotechnical (adverse geotechnical conditions) • Technical (equipment failure) • Regulatory, due to safety or environmental breaches • Social or community pressures • Closure of downstream industry or markets • Flooding or inrush Minaei Mobtaker and Osanloo (2013) developed a mine closure prediction model based on the data collected from closed iron ore mines in the past 100 years. They showed that economic factors, exhaustion of ore reserve and geological conditions are the main reasons of iron ore mine closure. They treated mine closure as a decision making problem in order to predict the causes of mine closure, including the uncertainties of some mine plan parameter such as iron ore price, production and consumption."

The issues involved in mine closure are usually complex, and the risks are significant. Although environmental risks are paramount, other issues such as safety, community, legal, fiscal and technical factors need to he taken into account. This paper describes a simple empirical model based on the concept of the closure risk factor, which will enable decision-makers to analyze the mine closure risks at any site, regardless of the complexity of the issues and the scale, scope and location of the operation. The model enables all the issues to be captured and their individual and collective risk quantified. A number of case studies in Australia and the Pacific that illustrate the usefillness of the model are presented.

This pamphlet and the enclosed video describe a safe, effective and economical method for removing dust from work clothes. Background Information Dusty work clothes can increase a worker’s exposure to respirable dust. Respirable dust is usually considered to be particles having an aerodynamic diameter of 10 microns or less and able to enter and deposit in the gas-exchange region of the human lung. A former U.S. Bureau of Mines report documented a 10-fold increase in worker dust exposure on a number of separate occasions from dusty work clothes.* It was found that once clothes become contaminated, they are a continual dust source until cleaned. The only MSHA approved method to clean work clothes requires a HEPA-filter vacuuming system which is very time consuming and difficult to perform effectively. Therefore, most workers use a single air hose (not MSHA approved) which can elevate dust levels for the worker, co-workers, and the work environment. A substantial amount of engineering technology has been developed that, when applied, can significantly lower respirable dust exposures of workers at mineral processing plants. But even with these improvements, some workers continue to exceed their permissible exposure limit. Elevated exposures increase the potential for developing debilitating or fatal lung diseases. ?e clothes cleaning method described within is an example of a continuing effort to reduce the potential for developing these lung diseases. THE war is now behind us. We in the mining industry feel a just pride in the part that our industry and our men and our products played in defeating the enemy on the fighting fronts around the world. In five years of mobilization and actual combat, our mines and oil wells produced over 3 billion tons of coal, a billion tons of petroleum, 500 million tons of iron ore, 21/4 million tons of lead, 31/2 million tons of zinc, 5 million tons of copper, 14 million tons of bauxite, 17 million tons of sulphur, 68 million tons of salt, and 3 million tons of potash. It was an unparalleled performance. But what of today? Why the present low production and high costs? Among the black clouds in the mining sky none are so black as that presented by the labor situation. We know it is the result of the legislation and the interpretation of that legislation in the past ten or fifteen years. Since the passage of the Norris-LaGuardia Act in 1932, we have had nothing but a succession of laws, regulations, and decisions that have intensified the strength of the unions and made the operators of the mines and the sources of their financing prartirally impotent

This research contributes to BioMinE (http://biomine.brgm.fr), an integrated European Union project of the Sixth Framework Programme. The general objective of BioMinE is the development and integration of innovative, environmentally friendly, biohydrometallurgical processes for the recovery of metals from primary and secondary resources within Europe. The work presented in this paper deals with the initial plan of study on the sustainable use of solid wastes derived from bio-processing of European metal bearing resources. The approach involves solidifying the waste into cementitious waste composites analogous to controlled low-strength materials (CLSM). The aim is to achieve composites of adequate mechanical, physicochemical and environmental integrity, thus providing a sustainable solution for dealing with such bulk products which are conventionally unmarketable and therefore normally discarded to landfill. Assessment has been based on largely ?model? wastes anticipated to be similar to bio-processing wastes. These include an ochreous mine water sludge and an industrial goethite residue. The work indicates that wastes containing high iron and calcium contents, typical of products from bioleaching of concentrates, could be beneficially reformed as CLSM of appropriate compressive strength. Due to the high water contents of these composites, porosity and hydraulic conductivity were correspondingly high. Flow-through leach tests showed some resistance to immobilisation of toxic elements. Work is continuing to reduce the risk of toxic elements leaching under environmental conditions. This will include laboratory-scale encapsulated systems of CLSM, designed and tested to produce a novel type of engineered fill structure.

"The Phase I Mill at Cluff Lake in northern Saskatchewan was designed to accommodate a very specific high grade uranium ore. As this high grade ore was depleted, construction was undertaken on a new mill circuit (Phase 2) to process a more conventional lower grade ore deposit.The Phase 2 Mill expanded the ore throughput to 800 tonnes per day. The new process employs crushing, grinding, leaching, counter—current decantation, solvent extraction and magnesia yellowcake precipitation and drying to produce a yellowcake concentrate.This paper discusses the process decisions required for this expansion and outlines the new mill circuit. Included is a review of the start up in August, 1984.1.,INTRODUCTION The Cluff Lake Uranium deposit is located 720 kilometers north of Saskatoon in northern Saskatchewan. A high grade deposit was discovered in 1970 with the first production taking place in 1980 after lengthy hearings. The original mill (or Phase 1 Mill) was specifically designed to accommodate this very high grade ore for a very limited plant life.Pilot plant work was carried out in 1981 on the other lower grade ores found in the immediate Cluff Lake area. Feasibility and process selection studies were then undertaken as the Phase 1 mill was nearing its end of life. These studies were completed in March 1983 when approval was given to construct the new Phase 2 mill."

Most cluster analysis techniques are not well suited to the analysis of engineering data as they have been designed for more qualitative data that tend to produce compact clusters. A clustering technique is described which develops and uses local cluster shapes to build clusters that are suitable for use in engineering applications. The technique is finding application in the analysis of many types of data, particularly where multiple trends and outlying points occur in multiple dimensions. Applications of particular interest are the calibration of on-stream analytical equipment and the analysis of data on plant performance. A technique for evaluating the similarity of ore deposits is presented. A Q-mode cluster analysis is performed using information on tungsten mines in North America. This is a method of grouping several samples according to their similarity based on a simple matching coefficient. Tungsten mines are grouped or clustered on the basis of geologic variables. It is possible to interpret and evaluate different ore environments according to age, mineralogy, and other variables. It is well known that variable geologic conditions influence the occurrence of certain types of minerals. If one variable is responsible and identified, that variable can be searched for in exploration. If several interrelated variables are responsible for forming a favorable environment, then recognition and identification may be more difficult or completely masked. Therefore it is helpful in exporation to isolate and identify multiple interrelated variables which control the localization of mineral deposits. Cluster analysis is useful in mineral exploration where considerable amounts of data are available for analysis. Subtle relationships that might be overlooked because the data are voluminous can be isolated using this technique. Cluster analysis can be used to establish exploration prioriy in unknown areas on the basis of similarities to known metallogenetic provinces.

"Rare-earth transition-metal (R-TM) alloys show superior permanent magnetic properties in the bulk, but the synthesis and application ofR-TM nanoparticles remains a challenge due to the requirement of high-temperature annealing above about 800 °C for alloy formation and subsequent crystalline ordering. Here we report a single-step method to produce highly ordered R-TM nanoparticles such as YCO5 and SmCO5, without high-temperature thermal annealing by employing a cluster-deposition system, and we investigate their structural and magnetic properties. Nanoparticles of size = 10 nm are monodispersed (s /d ~ 0.15) and have Hc values at T = 300 K of 8.0 and 4.5 kOe for YC05 and SmC05, respectively. Alignment of the easy axes is performed via a field applied to the clusters before deposition. These processing steps are highly desirable to create and assemble R-TM nanoparticle composites for future permanentmagnet applications.IntroductionMagnetic nanoparticles with high magnetocrystalline anisotropies (Ki > 1 MJ/m3) are required for permanent-magnet, recording-media, and other significant applications [1-3]. In this regard, bulk rare-earth transition metal alloys (R-TM) especially RC05 (R = Y and Sm) crystallized in the hexagonal CaCu5-type structure have shown a large Ki = 5 MJ/m3 (YC05) and 22 MJ/m3 (SmCo5) along with an appreciable saturation-magnetic polarization (Js, > 10 kG) and high curie temperatures (Tc > 1000 K) [2]. The challenges in controlling the size, sizedistribution, phase purity and crystalline ordering, however, limit the research on RCo5 nanoparticles [4,5]. The conventional arc-melting technique requires high-temperature annealing for alloy formation and subsequent crystalline ordering, which causes excess growth and thus results in nanocrystalline powders of particles sizes larger than 30 nm [6, 7]. Low-temperature wet-chemical techniques yield SmC05 nanoparticles of sizes smaller than 20 nm [5], but the control of phase purity is challenging due to the presence of surfactants and formation of other secondary phases [8]."

Underground mining operations tend to have higher operating costs than surface mines. When metal prices decrease, profitability is jeopardized due to the high costs. Therefore, mining management harnesses new practices that increase operational efficiency. One way to manage this challenge is to invest in new mine planning practices. Stope layout optimization as a part of underground mine planning aims to identify a portion of the orebody in the form of production volumes (stopes) to maximize profit under roadway and stope dimension constraints. In this paper we propose a novel approach based on identifying ore-rich areas of the deposit and prioritizing their extraction through an iterative heuristic clustering approach. The proposed approach is compared with and validated by an exact method through a small mining example. The heuristics produced nearly identical results in a very short time. Finally, a case study was carried out using a larger data-set. The cluster-based iterative approach generated nearoptimal stope layouts in a computationally effective manner.

Clyde is one of the many outstanding metallurgist, in the United States who started as a chemist. After graduating from the University of Utah in 1915 he was successively chemist for U.S. Smelting Refining and Mining Co., and at the Bureau of Mines station at Ithaca, N.Y. He then got into, metallurgical work and in 1920 he was appointed superintendent of the Northwest Station of the Bureau of Mines at, Seattle. Subsequently he was assistant to H. SOME one once affirmed his great belief in luck, adding that he had found that the harder he worked the more luck he had. Clyde Weed is a firm believer in this method of courting the fugitive lady. He is at work early and late, often leaving his staff at Anaconda's offices at 25 Broadway breathless trying to keep up with the ideas teeming from a fertile brain and the actions those ideas entail. Miles ahead of his assistants much of the time, he still manages to be an agreeable fellow to work with, no small accomplishment as many can testify. Mr. Weed arrived in the world at Moorestown, Mich., on Aug. 8, 1890. Sixteen years later he entered Michigan Agricultural College, a lowly freshman. The following year, with the experience and wisdom expected of a sophomore, he transferred his studies from the reaping of a harvest on the surface of the earth to delving into the deeper, unpredictable bowels of the earth, his studies now shifted to the Michigan College of Mines. Last June his alma mater conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Engineering.

A MAN who is a first-class metallurgist, engineer, and scientist and an outstanding organizer, administrator, and executive and who, at the same time, has an innate ability to "make friends and influence people" everywhere he goes is an exceptional personality at any time. And if such an individual can retain this combination of virtues during a great war despite the fact that the Government loaded him with enough work and responsibility for three such men. he is a most exceptional personality. And if he can keep his head and maintain an unfailing sense of humor during the trying war years and, while dealing with hundreds of jittery metallurgists and metalworkers, with Army and Navy brass, and with red-tape-entangled war agencies by the dozen, he is a rare personality indeed. Such a man is Clyde Williams, director of Battelle Memorial Institute. who will be President of AIME in 1947. The Institute is fortunate in having him as its mentor during what may be a critical and important year.

"In response to a severe regional drought and in preparation for the further decline of water levels in Southern Nevada’s Lake Mead, the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) built a new intake system to ensure water supply to Las Vegas and its surrounding communities. In 2015, design began on the Low Lake Level Pumping Station (L3PS) that will move the water from this lower intake, ensuring operability of the water delivery system despite these declining lake levels. The L3PS Project includes a 159-meter-deep shaft, a large underground chamber, and 34-each 152-meter-deep, 2.4-meter-diameter drilled well shafts to be constructed in highly faulted and fractured ground. The Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) delivery method was chosen to facilitate early contractor involvement in the design process to address the significant challenges and risks anticipated on this US$650 million Project. This paper describes the CMAR selection process; the CMAR involvement during design and benefits resulting from that involvement; and the unique collaborative effort among the owner, engineer, program manager and CMAR used to evaluate and select the best design approach, preferred underground construction methods, and coordinated geotechnical baseline report. PROJECT BACKGROUND AND NEED Seven of the United States’ western states rely heavily on the Colorado River and its tributaries for their water supply. The primary source of water for the Colorado River is winter snow that falls in the mountains ringing the Colorado River Basin. Flows in the Colorado River vary significantly from year to year, depending on the amount of snow and rain deposited in the basin. Beginning in the year 2000 and continuing to the present, snowfall has been well below documented historical averages and Colorado River flows have diminished."

Loudoun Water is currently implementing a quarry to reservoir conversion that will improve water supply reliability in periods of drought and flexibility in water supply operations when turbidity in its Potomac River supplies are high. The Milestone Reservoir Project consists of an inter-tie to the existing Potomac River Pipeline; new pipeline and tunnel; and a pumped intake and outlet works. Planned construction involves significant risks due to underground conditions which includes hard, igneous rock and high groundwater at the creek crossing. In addition, the site is constrained by Goose Creek, an adjacent residence, active mining in a quarry next to the new reservoir, public use of adjacent park space, and the Washington and Old Dominion Trail. Working with these constraints will require close coordination with active mining operations and public and private property owners. Safety of personnel involved with construction also represents a concern with quarry high walls over 30 meters in height near the planned construction. In consideration of key projects risks, Loudoun Water determined that an innovative CMAR delivery approach provided the best opportunity to achieve its goals in quality, innovation, front-end cost and schedule certainty, and operational flexibility and reliability. What matters most to Loudoun Water is the value in having a builder participate in the design process where key decisions can be made based on consideration of risks, cost, schedule, quality, and operability and maintainability of the system. While a progressive design-build delivery model may have produced similar outcomes, Loudoun Water had already invested in substantial development of the design for the work, and ultimately, CMAR provided Loudoun Water the opportunity to retain the partnership with the design team while gaining valuable input from a contractor. Among the challenges with CMAR in the Commonwealth of Virginia is a substantial limitation on self-performance corresponding to 10 percent of the construction value of the work. A significant industry outreach program was initiated by Loudoun Water to encourage participation with incentives in contract terms that allowed for the CMAR Contractor to make a reasonable profit. This paper reviews the CMAR procurement process and discusses contract incentives that were adopted to promote the work within the constraints of contract law in Virginia.

"In the flotation of ultramafic ores at Thompson mill, Inco Limited, CMC is used as both a floatable rock depressant and electrostatic serpentine slime dispersant. CMC, being a high molecular weight polymer, creates a serious handling problem in its introduction into the flotation processes. Typically, it is added as a 1-3% solution. This requires an enormous handling facility and makes its metallurgical gains uneconomical.Laboratory studies have shown that dry CMC addition as opposed to wet addition is feasible, as long as sufficient conditioning time is provided. Dry CMC addition into the grinding mill is also possible but its effectiveness is slightly reduced as compared to dry addition after grinding mills. Dry CMC addition using a vibratory feeder into the mill discharge is successfully applied in the treatment of ultramafic ores at Thompson mill.INTRODUCTIONManitoba Division MineralogyAt Inco’s Manitoba Division, two distinctly different sulphide ores are processed at the Thompson mill - primarily by froth flotation. The Thompson and Birchtree mines are both located within the Thompson Nickel belt. Sulphide mineralogy is relatively simple and includes both hexagonal and monoclinic pyrrhotite, pentlandite and minor chalcopyrite hosted in metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks. The significant difference between the two mines is the amount of ultramafic rock associations in the host material. Increasingly, more of the ultramafic associated ores from the Birchtree mine are being processed through the mill with a characteristic poor metallurgy."
