Advances in inexpensive computer automation led to the development and utilization of a computerized ore control system at Cyprus Coppers tone Gold Mine near Parker, Arizona. These new ore control practices improved accuracy, performance, and productivity of the ore control effort. An automated system for data collection, including bar coding of blast hole samples, laboratory analysis, data management, grade estimation, cut delineation, and ore zone stakeout, plays a major role in ore control practices. This is of particular interest because of the large amount of blast hole information being processed, analyzed, and reported daily.

The opencast lignite mines in the Rhinel and Di strict/Germany are equipped with the continuously operating bucket-wheel excavator - conveyor - spreader system. High productivity requires large capital expenditure on main mine equipment as a precondition for efficient mining. In operation, the technology employed leads to a particular cost pattern which is quite different from that of other industries. Labour, auxiliary equipment and mobile vehicles are the most important cost factors which can be controlled by the management. In this respect information processing computer systems are used for systematical and interpretable representation of operational tasks and jobs both in planning and work preparation and in recording the operational data describing the work result and the use of resources. Another aim of the project is to relieve the middle management of major part of its administrative routine work. Job-related work planning and data recording open up various possibilities of analyzing the operational procedures. This analysis shows, for example, what auxiliary machines are particularly suitable for specific tasks, and working groups can be organized so as to take account of the different skills of individual employees for the sake of an optimal work product. Computerized information processing provides the decision makers with topical information related to their respective responsibilities. The mining department of the Hambach opencast mine is the first user of the PERMAD system. Due to the favorable evaluation it has been decided to introduce PERMAD in three other mines in the course of 1992/93.

A major problem facing the Nigerian Mineral Industry today is flooding in its underground mines. Flooding has reduced productivity to a very low level which results in huge economic losses. Consequently, this paper presents a computer based model that pre¬dicts the quantity of water accumulating from diverse sources in an underground coal mine with a view to suggesting a permanent solution to the problem. Specifically, the paper describes the model building technique and the output achieved from its application to a real mine case study.

Although preventive maintenance is not a new concept and has many proven applications, it is believed that the Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Co.'s Computerized Preventive Maintenance System is the first and possibly the only application related to heavy duty bulk material handling equipment. This paper is presented to describe the development, installation, and application of a Computerized Preventive Maintenance System applied to an 18 million t (20 million st) coal and iron storage and reclaim facility located on the shores of Lake Erie at Conneaut, Ohio.

Computerized Preventive Maintenance is important in maintaining consistent and efficient operation in any industry utilizing sophisticated and expensive equipment on a continuous basis. At today's large bulk materials handling facilities, the problems of continuous operation of complex machines with their thousands of components exposed to abrasion, dirt, dust and the elements, are intensified and multiplied. Effective preventive maintenance can increase profits. Yet, the number of tasks to be performed is so staggering that it is beyond error-free human capacity. The computer must be an essential ele¬ment in any efficient and economical preventive maintenance system. Computerized preventive maintenance techniques have been successfully used in many fields, usually involving highly skilled and specialized personnel working under favorable and controlled conditions. Now, The Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Company has developed and is applying a computerized preventive maintenance system that is applicable to the bulk materials handling industry. The "system" has taken many years of intensive effort to develop and has been time-tested and proven during the past years on equipment handling materials with rugged physical characteristics and corrosive and abrasive qualities, under some of the most adverse weather conditions on the Great Lakes.

Engineers at the Freeman United Coal Min¬ing Company, located in West Frankfort, Illinois, have been using a computerized production planning and maintenance reporting system, which have been designed exclusively for underground coal mining. This paper will explain a dynamic graphical simulation and computerized time study system that has been used to design and evaluate underground production systems for optimizing productivity. Also with the aid of customized software, detailed records on changeable components of underground equipment, including the vendor's name, date installed, operating and maintenance hours, etc., have helped Management to select the best available components for their equipment. The MPASS System, Mine Performance Analysis Simulation System, developed through a cooperative agreement with Freeman United, Ketron Inc., and the U. S. Department of Energy utilizes new methods to analyze and design production systems in underground coal mines. The MPASS System is a menu-driven user oriented system of interactive computer programs, which form five major subsystems. The subsystems: 1. Simulation 2. Time Study 3. Mine Background Reports 4. Introduction Raise boring is the most accepted form of mechanized hard rock boring in the mining industry. It appeared logical to take this mechanization one step further by introducing computers. Atlas Copco Jarva has produced a series of raise boring models that use an integrated computer. The company decided to use electronics and computerization, not for marketing purposes, but to make its equipment more cost-effective. Basis of Cost-Effective Design From the manufacturer's standpoint, it is possible for the equipment owner to reduce the cost of putting in raises by: • Replacing existing components with less expensive components that produce the same results; • Replacing existing components with more expensive components that make the equipment more productive; • Mechanizing equipment to reduce associated labor costs; and • Combining the above. Analysis of a standard raise boring machine (RBM) system showed that little could be done with less expensive components. It appeared, however, that the RBM could be more productive by transmitting more horsepower through the expensive drill string, while being precisely controlled by computers. An RBM system includes a basic machine, drill pipe, accessories, reamer, and cutters. The approximate percentage cost of various components on a standard system capable of boring 300 m (985 ft) long and 3-m-diam (10-ft-diam) aises in medium to hard rock is shown in Table 1. Also shown is the increased cost above standard of the Jarva computerized machine, and the productivity of both. Increased Productivity Penetration is important during the reaming cycle for more productive raise boring. This is possible by increasing the cutter load with constant rpm or increasing the rpm with constant cutter load. To increase thrust and maintain rpm requires increased capacity in the cylinders, drive train, main thrust bearings, drill string, electrical motors, and power units. To increase rpm and maintain cutter load requires only increased capacity in the electrical motors and power units. This is possible because the torque requirement remains constant for a constant thrust load. Only the horsepower increases, proportional to rpm. Since cutter costs are a big factor in raise boring, changes in machine performance must be analyzed to assess the effect on cutter performance. With a standard or typical carbide cutter, as used on raise boring machines, the effects of increased thrust or rpm are shown in Table 2. The assumption is made that the base data is the current rpm and thrust range where the cutters are now operated. It is also assumed one variable is held constant while the other increases. The result of this comparison, approximately, is that a 50% penetration increase can be achieved with little or no increase in cutter cost if rpm is increased 50% and cutter load is maintained constant. A similar 50% penetration increase can be achieved with a 45% increase in cutter cost, if the cutter load is increased by 20% and maintained constant. The rational exploitation of deposits for cement manufacture requires evaluation of the material, the planning of the quarrying and the right choice of quarry machinery. By using a computer for all evaluations and planning work the optimal recovery of material is arrived at and a quarry layout - and machinery is decided upon. The result will be uniform production throughout the lift of the deposits using a rationally chosen quarry equipment.

Hong Kong has a dense distribution of utility services laid under its road network. Utility undertakers frequently demand road openings to install new services and/or maintain existing ones. Road openings can cause troubles to the road network and negatively impact the public interest. Highways Department is responsible for managing road openings in Hong Kong under the Land (Miscellaneous Provisions) Ordinance. Highways Department has spent a lot of efforts to computerize excavation permit processing and utility management. The computerized system has gone through several generations and the current one is called the excavation permit management system (XPMS). On the one hand, the XPMS handles various excavation permit processing functions including permit application/approval/refusal/issuance/extension/termination, fees/costs, permit conditions, and permit period assessment; on the other hand, the XPMS accounts for some important utility management issues such as spatial check, coordination of multiple openings, traffic management, audit inspection, and defect liability. This paper discusses how the application, coordination, and other administrations of an excavation permit are eased by using the XPMS in Hong Kong. Background information such as the governing legal and regulatory framework, and Highways Department?s administrative structure is introduced. The system architecture and advantages of the XPMS are presented. The work procedures and various functions of the XPMS are studied in detail.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a quantitative Analysis for pyrite in coal by X-ray diffraction that can be accomplished in little more than 1 hour. To minimize the sample analysis time, data processing has been completely computerized with pertinent output information displayed on a VR12 cathode-ray tube display. Use of this computerized system is not only advantageous during the experimental stages of the pyrite analysis project but would also be essential if the X-ray diffraction procedure is accepted as a standard method of analysis.

Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Ltd., is one of the four mines operated by the Anglo American Corp. in Northern Rhodesia, now the independent nation of Zambia. Today Nchanga is the second largest single producer of copper in the world, accounting for more than 200,000 long tons of copper annually at a monthly milling rate of 430,000 tons of ore. The average mill-head grade is about 5.20% total copper, of which approximately 60% is copper sulfide. The remainder, referred to as "acid soluble," is copper oxide. Nchanga mines three separate orebodies varying in grade and sulfide-to-oxide ratio. Ore is processed in two separate grinding circuits feeding into three separate flotation circuits. A fourth flotation circuit treats leach plant residue for additional recovery of sulfides.

The Chino mine is an open pit copper mine located in southwestern New Mexico, at an elevation of 1890 m (6200 feet) above sea level, approximately 117 km (70 miles) north of the Mexican border. It is owned by Chino Mines Co., a Phelps Dodge Corporation-Mitsubishi Minerals partnership, and is operated by Phelps Dodge Corporation. As part of an effort to maximize production and minimize costs, a computerized truck dispatching system was approved for purchase and installation at the Chino mine in March. 1984. Modular Mining Systems, Inc. was commissioned to install their system, trade named DISPATCH. The system installation was completed and operation began in July, 1985. Installation and operation of the system has presented some interesting challenges and problems, which have been overcome, resulting in increased productivity for the haulage truck and shovel fleets.

"Modular Mining's computerized LHD position monitoring and dispatching system commenced operation at the De Beers Finsch Mine in mid- J99J. A sophisticated blend of proven and new technologies links the dispatcher at the workstation console on the surface with the LHD operators several hundred metres below. The dispatcher allocates each LHD to a priority tip and loading drive based on instructions provided by the miners and shift bosses underground. LHD operators receive tip and loading drive allocations on the vehicle computer console which communicates data via a Leaky Feeder radio network. The operators interact with the console to notify the dispatcher of delays, breakdowns, and changes in tip and tunnel status. The underground terminal displays allow shift bosses to monitor the progress of the LHDs as they pass infrared beacons (IRs) located in the tips loading drives and rim tunnel main haulage ways. The terminals also provide on-line statistics for the current and previous shifts. Future enhancements include optimized dispatching and interfacing to a PLC system controlling ventilation. Further, token ring-based loop UHF radios are being investigated as an alternative to the Leaky Feeder data radio network. IntroductionFinsch first contacted Modular about an LHD monitoring and dispatching system in late 1988. At that time, Modular declined a request for a formal quotation but agreed to perform an engineering feasibility study. The study was issued in mid-1989 and confirmed Finsch's belief that an underground system could be developed with technology available at that time. A contract for the system was signed the following year and, in May of 1991, the system began operation. By the end of 1991, LHDs on both production levels of the mine were under the control of the system."

Several years ago it was decided that ASARCO was in need of a good mine scheduling program to complete the computerized open pit mine planning package that was being used on new prospects and operating properties. A trial and error approach was being used to schedule a mine on a year by year basis, but this was time-consuming and far from offering an optimum solution l. Due to the magnitude of time and expertise required to develop such a sophisticated computer program, it was decided to search outside of the company for one already developed and available for purchase, This proved fruitless and therefore proposals were requested from consulting firms that had the expertise to develop such a program. Out of the five firms that submitted proposals, the one chosen was Systems Control, Inc., (S.C.I.) of Palo Alto, California. S.C.I. was selected because it was felt that they offered the greatest capability in the mathematical solution of complex problems. But due to their lack of mining expertise, a cooperative venture was developed whereby ASARCO would supply this mining knowledge. The selection of this vendor, the formulation of the contract and specifications, and the development of the computer program required about 3 years to accomplish.

A computer program has been developed which will locate the economic limits of an open-pit mine and also designate which ore and waste blocks to remove per period (years or quarters) to maximize the discounted cash flow over the life of the mine. A set of operating constraints was carefully selected so that the following functions are controlled: (1) the removal of overburden by preproduction and production stripping exposes a fixed amount of ore; (2) a constant manpower and equipment usage is insured (except for trucks); (3) the tons of mill ore, concentrate, and stockpiled ore are regulated; (4) the number and extent of shovel moves are minimized; (5) the grindability of the rock is considered as well as the variable haulage cost caused by variable haulage distances and depths; and (6) the size of the shovel working area is regulated. As many as 50 alternate schedules can be produced per computer run. They are arranged in descending order starting with the best solution.

Modern computers and software provide powerful tools for the geologist to construct reliable models of geological resources, and the mining engineer to produce accurate and workable mine plans. Over the years many people have developed a phobia of computers, especially for geological analysis, modelling and mine planning. This phobia is often caused by a lack of knowledge, poor training or a bad experience. The adoption however of computers for geological modelling and mine planning is now becoming mainstream. With the correct training, a good understanding of input data, and detailed knowledge of the required results, the phobia can safely be overcome to provide mining operations with increased productivity.

The excavation of a coal mine or any other mine, tunnel, or quarry, below the water table establishes a void towards which ground- water will flow. Inflows into the mine, if significant, can cause not only problems such as flooding, and/or muddy floors, in the mine, but commonly also require disposal of poor quality groundwater. The flow of groundwater towards a mine is accompanied by a decline in groundwater levels, which may extend up to several kilo- metres around the mine. This may seriously effect vegetation, stream flow and existing users of groundwater. At the pit face groundwater gradients can also cause slope stability problems and where a water table is intersected, increase blasting costs.

Early computerised blast monitoring equipment consisted of a digital version of the existing analogue machines with, perhaps, a few enhancements. Many additional facilities have since been developed to enable the efficient collection of high quality data. These developments are examined with reference to digital sampling, triggering systems, the storage of complete recordings and signal processing. Recent advances have been made in the use of blast monitoring systems that comprise multiple blast monitoring locations with centralised control and data collection. Software has been developed to help record blast parameters and assess environmental effects. Computer databases have many advantages over their paper counterparts. Data can be easily retrieved and processed. The scaled distances used in the prediction and control of peak particle velocities can be calculated rapidly when the data are obtained directly from a database. Since the whole vibration signal can now be recorded, signal processing can be used to provide information such as signal length, dominant frequency and response spectra.

On its tenth anniversary, the computer is a "fact-of- life" in the mineral industries. Its evolution as a practical mining tool was accurately summarized by Alfred Weiss, editor of the Proceedings of the 1969 International Computer Application Symposium, A Decade of Digital Computing in the Mineral Industry: "During the past decade, data processing and operations research developments within the mineral industry have evolved through states typical of any new technique. These have ranged from mere recognition, to cautious acceptance, to confident utilization, and in some instances, to substantial investment in computer hardware and software."
