INTRODUCTION Manganese carbonates are nodulized by Cia. Mineral Autlan, located in Ongongo in the state of Hidalgo in Mexico. This kiln is fed minus 15 mm material at the rate of 1870 tpd. About 920 tpd is nodulized into a commercial product having a size range of 15 mm to 12 mm. The kiln also produces about 320 tpd of minus 12 mm fines and 40 tpd of chimney dust. Currently, the minus 12 mm fines are being recirculated to the kiln and the chimney dust is not being utilized. It has been found that there exists a market for manganese to be used as feed to the ferromanganese and silicomanganese furnaces. However, a coarse, lumpy feed can only be used in these furnaces. Accordingly, it has been proposed to screen the fines at 6 mm and agglomerate the minus 6 mm fraction along with the chimney dust and suitable binders. This paper presents the results of a feasibility study and test work aimed at producing an acceptable agglomerated product from the kiln fines for use in the ferromanganese and silicomanganese furnaces. Since the agglomerated product will have to be handled and loaded into trucks in the kiln area and transported over long distances, a minimum strength of 200 N is expected to be necessary. They should also have enough initial strength to be stockpiled and result in a minimum of breakage. A third important requirement is that the agglomerates should be resistant to disintegration during combustion. The recirculating fines were to be agglomerated in their original state, if possible, that is, without grinding. This eliminated the possibility of pelletizing as an agglomeration method. Based on a few laboratory trials, the briquetting method seemed most attractive, and a test program was initiated to explore the briquetting process.

INTRODUCTION The Sachtleben Chemie GmbH in Duisburg, a subsidiary of the Metallgesellschaft AG, operates a new sulfuric acid plant that employs fluid bed roasting of pyrite concentrates. The plant produces about 300,000 tons per year of pyrite cinders from the fluid bed roasting unit. The cinder product consists of 58 percent iron and is about 80 percent by weight smaller than 50 microns. This cinder product was found to be a competitive source material for the cement industry as the iron-containing additive. However, the extreme fineness of the cinder and its dusting tendency were undesirable and an agglomerating technique became necessary. In order to keep the price of agglomerated pyrite-cinders at a competitive level, the agglomerating method must be chosen such a way the capital and operating costs are low. Initial experiments were carried out on a laboratory scale to make an appropriate choice of the agglomerating method. Major goals of agglomerating the cinders were to improve the transportation, storage, and proportioning and metering properties. Minimum specifications are put on the size, size distribution and shape of the product. Criterion for handling is that a minimum of minus one mm. fines are produced after several handlings, while for storage, it is also desirable for the agglomerated product to survive several months in open air. Thermal agglomeration processes such as sintering one known to produce excellent products, but are by far too expensive for our application. For the same reason, granulation, balling, and pelletizing tests with addition of organic binding agents, such as tylose, starch, sulfite wash, molasses, etc. were not continued. Pilot-plant and laboratory tests were made on blends of steel plant flue dust and portland cement to determine whether the flue dust could be pelletized for use as a source of iron in dry process cement manufacture. Strength and setting time results showed that an acceptable agglomerate can be made with a Type II portland cement binder. Abrasion-resistant and well-sized pellets were made in a horizontal drum, using a simulated closed circuit, with a binder content of 7.5% and a moisture content below 15%. Pellet quality was found to be relatively insensitive to changes in binder concentration above 5%. Simulations of stockpiling and weathering indicate that little difficulty would be encountered with use of the flue dust pellets in cement plants.

"Flotation selectivity becomes progressively more difficult to achieve with decreasing particle size. One of the possible problems is agglomeration, i.e. particles clustering together. One mechanism derives from the surface charge all particles develop in water. Agglomeration driven by surface charge is known as coagulation. One form is coagulation between particles of two different minerals of opposite charge. Another is coagulation between particles of the same mineral when conditions are such that the charge approaches zero.The paper describes the method of measuring charge and a new automated settling technique for measuring agglomeration. The phenomena are illustrated with galena and pyrite. Methods of assessing the importance of agglomeration in the plant environment are still to be developed.IntroductionFine particles can agglomerate (i.e. adhere to each other) under certain conditions. This is counter-productive for any physical separation process, including flotation. One cause of agglomeration derives from the surface charge that all particles develop in water. Agglomeration due to surface charge effects is referred to as coagulation. There are two forms of coagulation. If the surface charge is brought to near zero then the force of repulsion is lost and particles coagulate. This usually applies to particles of one mineral type and the technical tenn is homocoagulation. On the other hand, if two particles have opposite charge there is an attractive force. Since the particles in this case are usually different minerals this is known as heterocoagulation.Both types of coagulation can cause minerals to be misplaced. In the case of heterocoagulation this is fairly obvious. One example that may be familiar is slime coating (fines of one mineral coating larger particles of another) But even homocoagulation can be a problem an agglomerate of the same mineral particles can entrap particles of another mineral."

Designers of combustion processes may select aerodynamic conditions which produce only superfine fly ash. Although it is not usually anticipated that this will create a problem, such as has been found to agglomerate in high-velocity gas streams, to plug mechanical dust separators in a short time, and to contribute to atmospheric pollution. The problem is a fundamental one, and may be approached in several ways. The authors, in the course of their combustion research program, had occasion to examine the agglomeration of ash, ranging from sub-micron to 17 microns in size, produced in a (coal and oil) dual-fuel-fired steam generator. Several theories, supported by extensive laboratory studies, have provided some understanding of a probable mechanism of agglomeration. As a result, certain precautions are suggested in the design and selection of combustion processes and equipment.

The use of pellets in North American blast furnaces has made the mixes used in the associated sinter plants unique. These mixes generally contain a high percentage of fine waste oxide materials as the principal iron bearing portion of the mix, with iron ores and concentrates added in minor amounts only. Additionally, the sinter basicity is always above one and can be three or higher. This paper will discuss the large body of knowledge and experience developed by one company on this type of sinter mix. Results of laboratory tests will be used to illustrate how mix composition and feed preparation affect sinter productivity and quality.

"Kennecott Barneys Canyon Mining Co. is a gold heap leaching facility that has been in operation since 1989. In 1994, a flotation plant was commissioned to remove sulphide minerals from refractory sulphide ore. Tailings from the plant are mixed with oxide heap leach material in order to produce a geotechnically stable agglomerate from which the gold is leached and recovered in a conventional heap leach cyanidation process. The experience to arrive at an effective blending methodology is discussed.IntroductionAgglomeration is the practice of binding fine particles to coarser rock or other fines in order to avoid the deleterious effects of mobilizing the fines during the course of heap leaching(l-Chamberlin). Agglomeration has been considered a key component of successful operation at many heap leach sites. If the ore is of sedimentary origin and crushed, there is a high likelihood that the resulting product will contain a significant quantity of fines and a skewed gradation, that i~, a disproportionate amount of coarse and fine particles, with few in the intermediate size range. The exact methodology for determining whether the practice of agglomeration will have to be integrated into the operating scheme has been well discussed. These conditions are primarily geotechnical and geochemical. This paper will deal with the specific experiences of Kennecott Barneys Canyon Mining Company in modifying the agglomeration practices to suit evolving operational requirements."

Agglomeration pre-treatment is a new process now being used here and overseas whereby problems arising with the heap leaching of gold and silver from materials containing critical amounts of fines or clay can be simply and cheaply overcome. The technique involves mixing the material with a suitable binder, commonly Portland Cement, and tumbling the moistened material to agglomerate the fines. These agglomerates are placed on the leach pad and cured prior to leaching. Test results, plant and operating cost data are presented. INTRODUCTION Heap leaching is a low capital and operating cost alternative to conven tional processing techniques for gold and silver extraction. A number of commercial-scale operations have recently started in the United States and the method is being considered for further deposits there and elsewhere.

Ore agglomeration has been used as part of the heap leaching process for the last 40 years. However, industrial experience shows that the lack of a universal agglomeration standard has limited the benefits of this otherwise valuable unit process. The more complex the ore in terms of the nature and relative abundance of fines (particle size smaller than 74 μm), the more important that the agglomeration product satisfies some minimal requirements. This paper presents an agglomeration scale that identifies the quality standards for agglomerates and documents the resulting mechanical, physical and hydraulic (hydrodynamic) behavior associated with each level on the agglomeration scale. The hydrodynamic properties of an agglomeration product are critical for the proper design of a leaching operation and, as shown in this paper, can be used to select the optimal pretreatment method for a given ore sample. Agglomeration as a unit process not only allows better conditioning of the hydrodynamic behavior of the ore but also creates an opportunity for optimized delivery of reagents to kickstart the leaching process, which may ultimately improve the economic performance of leaching. Industrial case data are used to demonstrate the shortfalls associated with low-quality agglomeration and the benefits of improved agglomeration, which range from enhanced porous structure (better percolation and drainage characteristics) to better metallurgical response (faster kinetics and higher metal recovery). Proper agglomeration has been used to render otherwise untreatable ores into valuable leaching resources.

"Some basic features of the science and technology of particle systems are reviewed in the context of agglomeration processes. Emphasis is placed on the force of interaction among particles and with their environment and on their dependence on particle characteristics and interfacial phenomena. The complex role these forces play in the various stages of agglomerate formation, growth, consolidation and structure development, and their influence on final product properties is discussed.INTRODUCTION Agglomeration is an example of a process where the technology has generally preceded the science. Process development• has very often been by trial-and-error albeit with an eye on some basic principles. Nevertheless there is' a scientific basis to the process and a better understanding of the fundamentals can surely lead to improvements in process design and control.Successful processes for the agglomeration of fine particles depend on proper control of the adhesional forces between particles, to encourage agglomerate formation and growth and to provide adequate mechanical strength in the product. At the same time the rheology of the particulate system can be critical to the rearrangement of particles necessary to permit densification of the agglomerate and the development of an agglomerate structure appropriate to the end-use requirements.AGGLOMERATION SYSTEMSUltimately, the performance, of any agglomeration process depends on the• characteristics of the particles and their environment. The specific effects, however, are often complex and may be very difficult to pinpoint by simple observation of the process. A typical agglomeration process involves a number of concurrent or consecutive steps - adhesion, growth, compaction, etc., - each of which is affected by the characteristics of the system, but not necessarily in the same way. The effect of particle size, say on agglomerate growth may be quite different from its effect on compaction and its optimum value may differ widely from one stage to the other. Obviously there.is a general need for compromise in the design and operation, of agglomeration systems. Furtnermore, an understanding of the details of the process and their complexities can be critical to process optimization and improved product quality control."

The most critical variable in the successful establishment of the Murrin Murrin Heap Leach plant was the effective agglomeration of the Ni laterite ore. This paper describes the test work undertaken to establish the key agglomeration parameters including state of the art testing and analysis procedures. These parameters were then utilised to establish the key design and operational concepts for the world’s first commercial scale Ni laterite heap leach. Following the technical and economic success of the operation, the actual operational data is compared back to the original test work data.

The flotation technique as employed by Florida phosphate producing companies for the beneficiation of fine phosphate particles has been standardized over the years. Lower recoveries of coarse Phosphate rock by froth flotation technique, however, led to the development of new methods based on skin flotation of phosphate agglomerates. Recent developments of floating coarse rock in large flotation machines have not yet convinced the rock Producers of their higher separation efficiency. It is interesting to note that the selection of a particular machine is still bared on equipment preference by an individual company as well as proven performance of a particular machine for upgrading a specific material. Various techniques which have been developed to beneficiate the coarse phosphate rock have been discussed. Performance of the individual techniques is presented.

"The separation of fine or even smaller size mineral particles with conventional methods is inefficient due to the specific properties of fines (small mass, high specific surface area, and high surface energy per unit area). Hence, the production of high-grade concentrate with high recovery is very difficult to impossible and a significant share of mineral values is lost to the tailings. The aim of the current research is to investigate the possibility to efficiently separate value minerals from gangue of fine particle size. The objective of the current work is to develop separation schemes of fine mineral particles by combining an initial stage of particles agglomeration with the use of collectors (hydrophobic agglomeration) with a subsequent conventional separation method. In the current research, magnesite was used as mineral value to be separated: a) from quartz, and b) from mineral mixture (serpentine, ilmenite, and olivine). In each case, tests on single minerals and artificial mixtures were carried out. After hydrophobic agglomeration, the separation of magnesite from quartz was achieved by settling; in the second case (gangue: serpentine, ilmenite, and olivine), magnetic separation of the co-agglomerated gangue was applied. In both cases, the results of the preliminary tests on single minerals suggest that the separation of mineral value is feasible and efficient. These findings were also confirmed from the results of the tests on artificial mixtures of magnesite and gangue, either quartz only or mineral mixture. Both separation schemes provided with magnesite concentrates of commercial grade (95% magnesite) with high recovery. INTRODUCTION The generation of fine particles is inevitable in many operations of mineral commodities processing. Especially in the case of low-grade ores, the mineral value is finely disseminated in the ore, and considerable liberation occurs at a fine size range. Although there is not a uniform classification system with respect to mineral particles size, fines are usually characterized the particles with a size range of -100µm+20µm, very fines those of -20µm+5µm, ultra fines of -5µm+1µm, and colloids smaller than 1µm (Sivamohan, 1990)."

Agglomeration for the heap leaching of gold and silver ores is the process of attaching fine ore particles-less than 150 µm (100 mesh)-to coarser particles. The fines are thus immobilized and uniformly distributed throughout the heap. This is needed to make heaps more porous and uniformly permeable to the flow of a leaching solution. This article describes liquids and binders used to form agglomerates. Agglomeration techniques and equipment are also described. These include drum and disk agglomerators, stockpile and belt agglomeration, and the use of vibrating deck and reverse-running conveyors. The need for agglomeration The main reason for agglomerating heap leachable ores is to prevent percolation problems in a heap. This is different than pelletizing iron ore. In the latter case, the purpose is to bond very finely ground material into coarser, strong particles. These particles can then withstand the rigors of transportation and the loading forces in a blast furnace. Most percolation problems in heaps are caused by the segregation of coarse and fine particles during heap construction. This segregation creates areas with significantly lower permeability because fines plug the channels between coarse particles. Consequently, the leach solutions are subject to channeling, following the path of least resistance. They percolate downward through the coarse ore areas and bypass or barely wet areas that contain large amounts of fines. This results in lower extraction, longer leach time, and higher reagent consumption. Permeability problems in heap leaching are compounded because of the vertical migration of fine particles after the heap has been built. These fines eventually accumulate in pockets or layers and impede uniform solution flow. The fines move because they are not attached to a coarser particle. Moreover, the sluicing action of leach solution flowing over the surface of particles may break the bond between fine and coarse particles. Some fines are also created by the decomposition of ores after being wetted. Percolation problems are minimized if the fines can be attached to the coarser particles. Fines are thus uniformly distributed and rendered immobile within the heap. Heinen (1979) conducted comparative tests of nonagglomerated and agglomerated gold and silver ores. He showed that percolation rates through agglomerated material usually are improved by 10 to 100 times. This reduces leach time for economic recovery to less than one-third of that for nonagglomerated material, and total recovery may be increased. Cyanide consumption is also reduced in most cases because of the shortened leach time. Even run of mine (ROM) ore should be agglomerated. This can be achieved with moderate success by passing each truckload of ore under a water spray to bring total moisture of the ore up to about 8% to 10%. The ROM ore will mix when the ore is dumped, when it cascades down the slope of a heap, or when it is pushed up with a dozer. Overall, agglomeration allows low-cost heap leaching technology be applied to gold and silver ores and tailings that could not be economically processed by conventional methods, according to Phariss (1982). How agglomeration works Agglomeration means that the clays and fine particles contained in the ore adhere to the coarser particles. This creates a coating of fines around the coarse particles. When the ore has few fines and the percolation problems are not severe, the addition of a liquid may be all that is necessary to make the few fines adhere to coarser particles. However, when the quantity of fines is substantial, e.g., +10% -75 µm (-200 mesh), a binding agent may be needed. The investigations recorded in this bulletin were conducted by the Pacific Coke & Coal Co. in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington. They cover one phase of a comprehensive investigation to determine whether coals from an extensive, undeveloped area of Pierce County, Wash., can be used in the manufacture of coke for the iron blast furnace. The completed investigation had three parts: (1) A geological survey of the coal property, (2) washing and crushing tests of the coals, and (3) coking and by-product tests. The geological survey, which was not conducted in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington, included systematic tracing of the coal beds by test holes throughout the property, except some portions covered by an impenetrable layer of glacial drift. By this means all of the beds were correlated, their thickness and general character were determined, and tonnage estimates were made. Only such parts of the survey results as are necessary to a full explanation of the investigations described herein are included in this bulletin.

It is the nature of mining to reshape the landscape. Mining is an earth moving process with many of the same activities associated with the regrading of a site for a shopping center, drainage channel, housing project or ballfield. The difference exists only in purpose and duration of activity. The purpose of mining is to, produce a valuable product. The purpose of regrading for construction of a project is to create a predetermined landscape for a specific end use. In both situations the objective is to move earth materials as efficiently as possible. The question is then raised, if similarities exist, can mining operations be directed to shape predetermined landscapes as an integral part of its earth moving activity. This paper will explore the opportunities and issues of shaping sand, gravel and hardrock construction aggregate sites for productive end uses. It is based upon the premise that, as an earth moving operation, the process of extracting sand and gravel includes an inherent capability to shape productive lands as an integral part of the mining operation. In the course of any mining operation non-commercial materials, including overburden, fines and excess sand are handled to extract and process the commercial products. This activity exists regardless of whether or not there is a plan to reclaim the land. Moving this dirt is a basic operational cost. This cost need not be significantly increased when the material is deposited to shape land rather than be stock- piled just to clear the way for mining the deposit. Moving of dirt to create useable land can be guided by the same criteria used to remove the dirt from the deposit: for example, limiting the- hauling distance. Over a period of time earth handling costs can be reduced by minimizing the need to transport the stockpiled material a second time to the new landform location.

No sector of the mining industry is more closely tied to local communities than aggregates. Noise, dust, traffic, visuals aesthetics and environmental impacts all fall under the purview of neighbours, local governments and nongovernment organizations. It is no surprise that aggregate operations may not be welcome neighbors in many communities. In British Columbia (BC), the regulatory environment for aggregate operations includes a local component of municipal bylaws and land use-planning in addition to the usual suite of federal and provincial statutes that apply to its sister mining sectors. Additionally, under common law aggregate extraction is not considered to be a land use subject to land use zoning, and some aggregate processing activities can be regulated by zoning. Often traversing multiple local government jurisdictions, aggregate producers find themselves negotiating not only local traffic, but also a mosaic of regulatory environments. There is an opportunity in this present situation to facilitate the application of current technology and practices in the mitigation of many community and environmental concerns associated with aggregate operations. Moving a bulk commodity is a volume-based business, and operators often don?t have time for matters that don?t directly or obviously affect the bottom line. Regulatory agencies often play multiple and complex roles with respect to their industry, not the least of which is the fiduciary role. Balancing how and when to assist an industry is often a difficult decision. For the aggregate industry in BC, the Ministry of Energy and Mines saw an opportunity to assist not only aggregate operators, but also regulatory agencies, local governments, and the general public. Through investing in the Aggregate Operators Best Management Practices Handbook (handbook) project, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) believes that it will realize a return of upheld community values, enhanced environmental protection, improved regulatory compliance, reduce disputes and a stronger provincial aggregate industry. It is the intent to publish the handbook electronically through the MEM website later this year.

An aggregate plant may have difficulty balancing product stockpile inventories if hot mix asphalt (HMA) design engineers do not account for aggregate inventory during mix design. Yet HMA design engineers do not, often, take this into consideration during asphalt mix design. This is due to the lack of tools that enable the lab technician or engineer to optimize the mix for good performance while helping the aggregate plant manage its stockpile inventory levels and reducing the aggregate cost. This work presents a linear programming model of the asphalt mix design problem that helps aggregate plants manage their inventory levels while meeting HMA customer demands. The algorithm is implemented in MATLAB as an Asphalt Mix Design Optimization (AMIDO) program. The program is successfully validated with real-life data. The results show that AMIDO can be used to successfully produce any mix design while reducing the cost of aggregates by using the cheapest stockpile materials. The application of AMIDO will increase aggregate plant profitability when serving HMA customers and could potentially be modified for concrete aggregate customers too.
