Tunnels in the granitic Climax stock at the Nevada Test Site were inspected for keyblock occurrence. Thirteen relatively large pyramidal keyblocks were located in about 230 m (750 it) of tunnel. Orientations, dimensions, joint roughness coefficients, and joint compressive strengths were measured for the faces of nine keyblocks. The measurements were used to back-analyze keyblock stability to check the validity of a numerical model for keyblock behavior. A newly developed three-dimensional numerical model correctly predicted whether or not each keyblock failed in six of eight cases. The two exceptions involved stress conditions and keyblock locations that clearly violated the assumptions that underlie the stability model. The observations also allowed the effect of tunnel orientation on keyblock occurrence to be evaluated. Of the thirteen observed keyblocks, nine large blocks were found in less than 30 m (100 ft) of the Piledriver drift (which runs N56E) while only four blocks of comparable size were observed in 200 m (656 ft) of the Spent Fuel Test--Climax drifts (N61W). The orientations of the keyblock faces were checked against known discontinuity set orientations; some of the faces correlated well with mean set orientations, whi.le other faces were fringe members of sets. Stereographic techniques were used to examine the frequency of keyblock occurrence and to determine the maximum keyblock size that could be encountered with a given combination of discontinuities. Keyblock occurrence was found to be affected by tunnel orientation in a predictable way; this can be used to guide or improve tunnel design practices.

Ore and waste transports form an integral part of any mining operation and represents a substantial portion of the mine´s total operating cost. Mine layout, truck fleet and size, production rates, haulage distances, shift schedules, maintenance strategies etc. are all important and not at all static variables. They all change during the life of a mine and interact in a dynamic way. It is therefore essential for the successful mine management to constantly analyse and optimise the mine's transport systems. Önnerlöv has recently conducted a life-of-mine haulage simulation project for Zinkgruvan Mining, a medium sized, underground zinc producer, located approximately 60 kilometers south of Örebro, Sweden. The main objective of the project was to analyse and optimise the investments required to provide ore and waste haulage under changing conditions over an +10- years period: Deepening of the mine, increased production rates, changed mine layout, changed truck fleet etc. A large number of scenarios has been tested in the simulation model in order to identify the "lowest cost per ton" solution. This paper comprises an introduction of Zinkgruvan Mining and a brief background to the actual project, a description of the simulation model, project conclusions and some useful hands-on tips for mining engineers and project managers how to run a successful simulation project.

"Tapping operations at ferroalloy smelters generate a significant amount of fume. Effective capture of fumes is required to meet the obligations of environmental, as well as occupational, legislation.A study was completed on an existing fume extraction system at a ferromanganese furnace tapping area. The area under consideration included the tap-hole, launder, and ladle area. The study consisted of site test work as well as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling to identify and evaluate solutions.Site test work and observations during furnace operation provided a baseline of system performance as well as input parameters for CFD modelling. Gas flow rates and energy contents from each extraction area were measured. Photographs and video footage were taken to evaluate areas of fume leakage.The CFD study was firstly validated against site observations to ensure the accuracy of input parameters. Thereafter several modification concepts were modelled and suitable combinations were investigated to ensure robust solutions. The following concepts were considered:•,Air curtains•,Ladle hood aspect ratio and position•,Increase of ladle extraction volume•,Extension of the length of the tapping garage structureThe paper presents the results of a performance test on a working ferromanganese tapping area fume extraction system and the results of CFD modelling as compared to site test results. This paper will discuss the design analysis of sheet pile cofferdams for static and dynamic blast loads. Following construction of the new Willis Avenue Bridge across the East River between Brooklyn and Manhattan, in-river piers No. 9 and No. 10 from the former bridge were demolished, partially by explosive charges. The blast at Pier 10 was conducted first and though the demolition charge was relatively small, it gave confidence that the sheeting could be designed to resist the blast load. This paper primarily summarizes our analysis and performance of a sheet pile cofferdam at Pier 9 used to withstand the larger blast loads, contain the blast debris, and allow excavation of the pier below the existing river bed mudline. The program NLFlex was used to predict stresses and deformations of the cofferdams under dynamic blast loads, using simplified equations to estimate the underwater blast pressures. Specifically, the analysis focused on the stresses in the struts, waler beam, sheet pile interlocks and connection of the sheeting to the waler beam. Design included allowing plastic deformations and limited rupture of the sheet pile interlocks under the blast loading. Comparisons are made between stresses assessed by the dynamic finite element modeling and empirical relationships used within the industry. The performance of the system after the actual blast is discussed as well as details of the performance of welded vs. bolted connections within the system.

IntroductionThe Willis Avenue Bridge is one of the major access ways from the Bronx into Manhattan. The location is shown on Figure 1. The original bridge constructed in 1901 was a swing bridge over the East River. The bridge was in disrepair and outdated with regards to its ability to handle the flow of traffic resulting in numerousaccidents.In 2007, Kiewit Constructors Inc./Weeks Marine, Inc., A Joint Venture was selected to construct a replacement bridge. The $612 million project included construction of a new bridge just to the south of the original bridge. The most notable aspect of the construction was floating and lifting the new 350 ft. long swing span in place as a single piece. However, another significant challenge was using blasting to demolish two of the abandoned piers which were within the East River. The blast would be near existing structures in both Manhattan and Brooklyn and would be within 30 ft. of the new bridge."

Underground mining in the Bowen Seam has shown that the majority of outbursts have co- incided with faults, igneous dykes and sills, stone roof rolls or some combination of these. The coal measures are deformed principally by N- S trending, easterly dipping thrusts presumed to he associated with the major, reverse Collins- ville Fault. The old Collinsville State Mine records suggest that thrusts and strike-slip faults have been common sites of outbursts. In contrast, normal faults have not been outburst- prone. Detailed geological mapping in Bowen No. 2 Colliery 53 east and west panels has been carried out in the hanging wall of a thrust zone of 6.1 m throw. The associated sheared coal has been defined and several fracture sets delin- eated. Sheared coal can be observed up to 170 m from this thrust zone, but this is dependent on the vitrinite content of the upper seam section worked. Fvidence indicates that outbursts have crnrroJ only in extremely sheared coal. Curious spherical- to cylindrical-shaped c,,.31 ohjects ("apples" and "rods") are related to the deformation in the vicinity of the thrust zone. Increasing longwall panel dimensions, particularly face width in gassy coalbeds, may result in unexpected increases in methane emissions. To investigate this problem, continuous longwall face emission monitoring studies were conducted at two adjacent mines operating in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed, where longwall faces were to be extended from 229 to 305 m (750 to 1,000 ft). It was predicted by regression analysis of methane emissions data from 229 m (750 ft) wide longwall faces that extending faces to 305 m (1,000 ft) would increase methane emission rates by only 7 percent (0.6 m3/min (20 cfm)), to 8.6 m3/min (304 cfm) at the VP-1 Mine. In contrast, it was predicted that extending faces at the VP-3 Mine could increase methane emissions by as much as 13 percent (1.8 m3/min (65 cfm)) to 16.1 m3/min (567 cfm). The geologic and mine design factors in¬fluencing the variation in face emissions between the two mines will be discussed.

SX operators have conducted extensive shut-downs and repairs over the years to mitigate solution leaks from failed stainless steel false floors and walls in rectangular mixersettler mix boxes. Hydrodynamic modeling using first principles and constitutive equations of fluid mechanics can inform an efficient structural redesign sufficient to eliminate the plate failures. Updated mix boxes have been performing without failure for over a decade. Given the extensive construction of the original Holmes and Narver mixer-settler design throughout the world that includes stainless steel lined rectangular primary and auxiliary mix boxes, SX operators may benefit from the approach, eliminating costly shutdowns, leaks to containment, and hazardous repairs.

The paper outlines: methods used for the determination of wear metals in motor and transmission oils; contaminents in motor, transmission and crusher lubricating oils; and viscosity determinations. Case histories and costs are presented to illustrate the value of an oil analysis program. Introduction NORANDA MINES LIMITED (BELL COPPER DIVISION) is located on the shores of Babine Lake, approximately 450 miles north of Vancouver, British Columbia. Access to the mine is by road from Topley, B.C., about 40 miles away. When a preventive maintenance analysis program was first considered, it was obvious that if samples were to be sent out for analysis, results would not be available for at least a week, due to the distance from any commercial laboratory. The assay laboratory was asked to investigate the possibility of determining wear metals on site. A limited program was started soon after production commenced, and this has now grown to include all large mobile equipment as well as crushers and grinding mills. The laboratory also now determines viscosity, fuel dilution, dirt and abrasives, glycol and water. All these results are ready within two days. This paper will outline the methods used, data interpretation, several case histories and the benefits from such a program.

"The EC-project ""Blasting Control"" with partners from France, Austria, Italy and Greece dealt with the development of a diagnosis system, which enables blasting experts to investigate in detail on probable reasons of poor blasting results in underground drifting. The system incorporates monitoring of geometric, explosive, vibration and granulometry data. All data are compiled in a database and are provided for direct retrievement by demand of the experts in a graphical environment. This paper focuses on the advantages of such graphical system for both research tasks and applications in real testing situations. It describes the procedure of monitoring and presents a selection of graphical outputs generated during data processing immediately after blasting. Benefits of detailed monitoring in respect of detecting sources of errors are explicated by a actual example of a test series in a mine. The paper will conclude with an outlook onto the scientificresearch work which is planned to be based on the results of hitherto investigations."

Within the EU-research project "Blasting Control", jointly operated with partners from France, Italy and Greece, between 1992 and 1995, the Department of Mining Engineering of the Montanuniversity Leoben, Austria took over the task to develop a diagnosis system applicable in underground drifting, in order to identify possible reasons for blast failures or poor blast performance. For that purpose 120 m of 12 m2 test galleries were excavated at two different mine sites. For every blast performed the collar and bottom position of every hole drilled, the charged hole length and the drift and face profile of the round blasted were monitored. These 'geometrical" data were put directly from the measuring devices into SURPAC, the mine planning software chosen for data analysis. Based on the data computed, 3D plots comparing actual and planned data were made visible on the screen or as hard copies. Experience from the introduction of this system into a mining operation showed, that the system developed contributes to an improved understanding of the reasons for blast failures and forms the basis for an improved blast design. The soft- ware package SURPAC was also used to train the miners directly at the mine site in order to improve the quality of their work.

An understanding of the thermodynamics of smelting copper anode slimes is a prerequisite for improvements to the process. During slimes smelting, a silver-copper selenide matte is formed and subsequently oxidised to silver metal. As part of a series of investigations, molten silver selenide matte was oxidised at 1 100 degrees C with pure oxygen. The chemical potential diagram for the system was developed and used for qualitative prediction of the results of the experiments. A simple, computational thermodynamic model of converting is presented, the adjustable parameters of which were determined by matching the model with the experimental results. The practical usefulness of the model was demonstrated by predicting the effect on silver recovery of smelting temperature and of using either oxygen or air as the smelting gas

Mercury exists in coal at very low levels; the structure of coal, the vapor pressure of mercury, and its almost universal occurrence introduce unusual problems into the analytical methods. Round-robin analyses by several laboratories, each using its own techniques, indicate that the average mercury content of coal is about 0.2 part per million. Some western coals are as low as 0.05 ppm.

Research into the safe and economic extraction of underground coal pillars in the Witbank and Highveld coalfields of South Africa highlighted that future practices will have to consider pertinent risks associated with this least safe of all underground coal mining methods conducted in South Africa. To this end, a computer-based program called A-PEP (Analysis for Pillar Extraction Potential) was developed to assess three aspects of this mining practice, viz. risks associated with the physical attributes, operational risk attributes and economic attributes. This intelligent tool can thus be used when planning to conduct underground pillar extraction to ensure that all pertinent risk elements and legislative requirements are considered to conduct this mining method safely before a submission is made to the Department of Minerals and Energy. In the hot strip mill production, one of the factors that may affect the productivity is the occurrence of failure due to the geometry of the strip at the exit of the rolling mill, because the tip of the strip can turn-down or turn-up. This study had the objective of evaluating the behavior of the strip when leaving the working rolls, through numerical simulation, aiming to know the influences of the main variables that govern the formation of the turn-down. The methodology consisted in performing the computational simulation of the strip mill and to vary the operational and geometric parameters that could influence the process. The results showed that the rolling of hot strips of HSLA material with final thickness varying between of 3 to 6 mm and a reduction of 6.6% to 11.0% in the last stand of a hot strip mill, tends to bend towards the roll with larger diameter, higher friction coefficient , higher temperature and lower limit of material flow. It was observed that the variation in diameter is the main factor that contributes to the formation of the curvature of the front-end of strip. Based on these results, several measures were implemented in the industrial line, with a significant reduction in the occurrence of turn-down.

Excavation for The Bow, EnCana, in downtown Calgary, occurred between May 2007 and September 2008. A monitoring programme was used to determine the behaviour of the shoring wall, soil and bedrock during the excavation for the 21 metre (69 ft) deep excavation with a footprint of approximately 17,000 m2 (183,000 sq ft). Results from the inclinometer readings indicated that significant horizontal movement due to a weak rock layer and shear band effect. These modes of movement account for up to 100 mm (4.0 in) and 45 mm (1.8 in) of lateral deflection, respectively. Based upon the results of the monitoring programme, rock samples were collected from the weak mudstone bedrock, with great difficulty, to determine the strength and deformation parameters. Results from the uniaxial compression tests indicate a UCS around 830 kPa (120 psi) and elastic modulus between 80 and 180 MPa (11 and 26 ksi). Mohr-Columb parameters were determined to be c' = 340 kPa (49 psi) and f' = 24°. Residual strengths were determined to be c'r = 0 and f'r = 15°. Using the results of the laboratory tests and field investigation records, an initial finite element analysis was conducted. Results of the analysis show good correlation when compared with the observed monitoring deformation, indicating accurate portrayal of rock parameters. Additional analysis and investigation is required to determine the principal horizontal stresses in magnitude and direction.

The raw-coal feeding system and the upward medium current flow in a dense-medium vessel (DMV) are, in addition to the residence time of particles in the separator, important factors for efficient coarse particle separation. The feed material from a raw coal screen and/or pre-wet screen merge with the major volume of circulating medium as push medium, guided by an adjustable submergence baffle plate deep fed into the separator for effective separation. The remaining volume of the circulating medium enters from the purge and drain hoppers at the bottom of the DMV. This generates a gentle upward medium current flow in the separator, which prevents dense medium stratification/settling and merges as part of the push medium. A two-dimensional, two-phase model developed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to describe the flow pattern and evaluate the function of the dip plate for understanding the mechanisms of particle separation in the separator. The particle movement in the DMV is also tracked to investigate the major operating parameters affecting the separation performance of the DMV. The simulation results of the DMV separation performance are validated by in-plant test data.
