In salar-type deposits, lithium grades can be measured by bailers introduced at different elevations in the drill holes at locations where, later, the brine will be pumped out to recover the metal. When they are duplicated, these a priori rudimentary measurements may show large differences without indicating whether this is due to the procedure itself or to some physical causes linked to the dynamic behaviour of the salar (seasonality, rainfall, underground flow etc). In the reservoir presented in the paper, the problem is complicated by the double lack of stationarity of the lithium grades: the grades not only increase importantly with the depth but at the same time their fluctuations decrease, making it necessary to use non-stationary geostatistical techniques to simulate them. Reservoir simulation is developed in two steps: first, geostatistical simulations of the lithium grade create possible realisations of the reservoir; then, each geostatistical simulation is followed by a pumping simulation that calculates, at each drill hole of a given extraction scenario, the lithium produced each year over 40 years. For the set of 100 simulations produced in this way, a scenario reduction is made to choose the five most representative simulations where more complex calculations will be carried out (for example, changing hydrogeological parameters such as porosity and permeability, or the elevation of the filters, the number and the location of the pumping and the reinjection drill holes etc). The paper first presents an analysis of the geostatistical model sensitivity to the grade uncertainty when measured by bailer. Among the 100 measurements at our disposal covering the future production domain, 50 per cent are duplicates measured at the same place but at different times. They are randomly sampled to produce five subsets of 75 values, which will constitute the future 3D conditioning points for the geostatistical analysis and the simulations. For each subset, trend, standard deviation and variogram models are fitted, leading to five sets of 20 geostatistical simulations of grades. In this way, the reliability of the different parameters involved in the procedure is evaluated, as well as its impact on the pumping results. Then, a reconciliation study is conducted between the non-stationary nugget effects encountered in the 3D variograms of the lithium grade and a pure statistical analysis of 25 duplicates measured at different locations and/or different times. The result is that if the nugget effect reaches 20 per cent, which is the case of three conditioning subsets out of five, the reconciliation is good and the nugget effect of the variogram model represents the bailer uncertainty, ie the measurement error. Since the geostatistical simulation incorporates a nugget effect, it handles the bailer uncertainty and the impact on the produced metal is included in the evaluation. The final conclusion is that, after the hydrogeological pumping simulations, the initial differences between the five geostatistical models do not influence the final results: lithium grades measured by bailers can lead to a robust evaluation of the extractable resources, a conclusion that conflicts with conventional wisdom.CITATION:Séguret, S A, Goblet, P, Cordier, E and Galli, A, 2017. Subsidence monitoring was conducted in proximity to the 1-A and 2-A longwall panels at Consol Pennsylvania Coal Co.'s (CPCC) Bailey Mine slurry impoundment. Monitoring fullfills federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandated requirements. Construction of the monitoring network was completed between May and June, 1986. Monitoring was conducted before, during, and after mining of the panels between June, 1986 and February, 1987. The embankment was not deleteriously impacted by longwall mining.

MANY of the auriferous placers of the arid Southwest differ widely from the standard types of stream and eluvial deposits of more humid regions, although exhibiting some of the features of each. This diver-gence in characteristics is of geological and economic importance and appears sufficient to warrant the consideration of these placers as a class distinct from both stream and eluvial deposits. It is hoped that the consideration of these auriferous gravels as a distinct type of deposit will facilitate recognition of morphological and economic features that might remain obscure if these deposits were viewed in the light of stream or eluvial placers whose type locality is a more humid environment. "Bajada placer" is proposed as the designation for this type of placer deposit. Bajada is the Spanish term for slope and is used locally in the Southwest to indicate the lower slope of a mountain range, the portion consisting of rock debris and standing at a much lower angle than the rock slope of the range proper. It has been used in a geologic sense by Schrader1 and others. The type locality of bajada placers is the Sonoran Desert,2 where they occur on the bajada or rock debris slope of desert ranges. Stream placers are represented in the Southwest, but most of them lie within the mountain topographic province, the Mexican Highlands2 section of, the Basin and Range physiographic province. Eluvial placers may occur in the mountainous semiarid Mexican Highlands but are almost unknown in the extremely arid Sonoran Desert, as mountain slopes are generally too steep to permit the accumulation of any considerable mantle of residual debris. Since their salient distinctions are almost wholly the result of formation under conditions of extreme aridity, bajada placers are largely confined to the Sonoran Desert, although a few occur in the adjacent Mexican High-lands. They may be modified by the action of ephemeral streams, in which case the placer gravels of these arroyas approach stream placers in type and habit of occurrence, but their relation to an arid environment and the bajada type is usually apparent.

Bakelite is fairly widely known as a suitable material for the mounting of ore specimens, concentrates and tailings for microscopical study, but has not as yet had extensive application. It is the most suitable mount for specimens which are to be held in the mechanical holder of a polishing machine, based on that described by J. W. Vanderbilt*, which is installed in the Geological Department of the Melbourne University.Bakelite products are prepared by subjecting bakelite powder to a temperature of about 1600 C. under a pressure of approximately two tons per square inch for a period of four minutes. The shape and size of the products are governed by the use of suitably constructed dies. When the concentrate or tailing is mixed with the bakelite powder, a briquette is produced which can be polished so that the opaque minerals in the sample can be examined microscopically in the same way as in a piece of solid ore. The unit costs of dry crushing, within the efficient reduction ranges of equipment now available, are considerably less than those for the reduction of the same material in the same size range by wet mills using grinding media. This is a commonly recognized fact which cannot be disputed; still we find considerable imbalance in costs between the crushing and grinding sections of many operating mills. In other words, there are many instances where more reduction could be accomplished in the lower cost area of dry crushing. In addition, equipment is now available which enlarges this area and makes it possible to consider much finer crushing than has been heretofore economically feasible. There has been a tendency for the past two decades to utilize wet rod-¬milling in the reduction step. This actually amounts to a fourth stage of crushing in a size range formerly served by roll crushers which have fallen from favor on account of high operating costs, Some investigations have indicated that there is not sufficient difference in the operating costs of rolls and rod-mills to give a clear cut advantage to either method, There has for some time been a need and an opportunity for a dry crushing process to improve costs in the range now served by these two systems.

A mineral or metallurgical process uses various inputs, such as ores, energy and other raw materials, to make different products that fulfill societal needs. The processing of raw materials has changed in recent years due to the increased complexity of processing low-grade ores, intensifying competitiveness and greater constraints. For process improvement, various plant optimization and process modifications must be conducted under environmental, social, political and economic constraints. Processing research and education's success in meeting the process industry's future needs depends on an adequate balance between micro- and macro-engineering approaches. In its simplest form, macro-engineering is concerned with the "big picture," while micro-engineering requires looking at a subset of the process. So macro-engineering may be defined as an investigation of the larger or "whole" system to achieve the desired goals. And micro-engineering may be viewed as a quantitative investigation of a subset of the process, to determine cause-and-effect relationships within the subset. Two different approaches might be used in macro-engineering analysis. In one, the big picture may be viewed without a detailed knowledge of the subunits. With this approach, statistical tools are used to relate input and output parameters. Also, actual plant data or analog models might be used to obtain the desired information. The usefulness of such an approach increases with problem complexity. To attain the desired goals using the second, "model-based," approach, a detailed knowledge of the subunits is often useful and their interactions may be considered. In complex process analysis, the first of these approaches is more useful since less information is needed. However, it is also less exact and more likely to fail if there are significant changes in conditions and interactions. The second approach, on the other hand, is more exact, with greater predictive ability within the narrow subset being considered. Consequently, it is difficult and costly to conduct.

The concentrator at Kennecott Utah Copper currently has 4 lines with a configuration of one SAG mill feeding two ball mills. The slurry that reports to each ball mill will vary resulting in an unequal load of material. This configuration contains two separate sumps that receive material from a distribution box relying solely on natural slurry flow to feed each sump. The unequal split to each mill results in one mill receiving a greater amount of material. This will result in the equipment on one mill reaching limitations that may affect product quality and the operation of the equipment near maximum. The parallel mill in this condition will often have additional capacity that can be used but cannot be utilized due to the unequal split. The major consequences of this issue result in reduced throughputs and metal recovery. To resolve this condition an advanced control strategy was implemented to control the split in April of 2002 using equipment that was in place.

"Toho Zinc Co., Ltd Chigirishima Refinery has the production capacity of electrolytic lead for 95000t/y by sintering- blast furnace electrolytic process. Lead raw materials are lead concentrates, spent batteries and dusts that contain lead from other companies, and these are handled by existing smelting process. There are many circulation materials in the process, because the system has been constructed with improving the recovery rate and protecting the environment. This report describes material balance in each process, distribution of the lead and various components, and it examines present state of the processing. In addition, we report the result that we have tried to improve the work environment.IntroductionThe Chigirishima Refinery of the Toho Zinc Co., Ltd. is located in Chigirishima, an island 4km off the coast of Takehara-city, Hiroshima, Japan. The Chigirishima Refinery began lead smelting operations in 1951.The Chigirishima Refinery adopted the sintering-blast furnace-electrolytic process and has an electrolytic lead production capacity of 95,000 tons/year. The existing smelting process handles raw materials from lead concentrates, spent batteries, and lead-bearing dust from other companies. This system was constructed with the intentions of improving material recovery ratios and protecting the environment; therefore, there are many materials recirculating throughout the smelting process. However, it was not until 1877 when Carl Frederich Koepe installed a friction winder sheave at the Hanover Colliery in Germany, that the design was given serious consideration. The winder consisted of a motor-powered sheave over which a single rope was installed, and the end s attached to two conveyance s. Beneath the conveyances a rope was connected, designed to reduce the chance of slip. This was the first balance rope.This earl y mod el is a far cry from the modern tower or ground mounted Koepe winders employed throughout the mining industry today. There have been vast improvements in all aspects of the Koepe winders. One such improvement is in the balance ropes used. This particular area will be concentrated on, with emphasis on selection, maintenance and field experience.SelectionThe sale purpose o f a balance rope is to counter the head rope weight. Obviously then, in selection o f balance ropes, weight is of primary concern. Usually the head and balance ropes are equal in weight. These reduce horsepower demands during peak acceleration periods, and assist in overcoming inertia during retardation periods. As well, it is sometimes preferred to reduce the balance rope weight, in order to compensate for the eventual weight buildup of lubricant, dirt and debris."

"The operation of mineral processing equipments is intimately related to the mineral composition of the ore. However unit performances are usually characterized in terms of metal contents or recoveries as this data is easier to obtain than the mineral contents. This paper describes a method that combines the operations of material balancing and estimation of the mineral contents of the ore. The estimated mineral contents can be used for process analysis and diagnosis of operating problems.IntroductionThe ore that is feeding a concentrator is made of minerals that condition the energy requirements for the ore comminution and the performances of the subsequent separation circuit. Indeed a change in the mineral composition of the ore may lead to lower grinding mill throughput as well as lower recovery or grade of the economical products. Despite this relationship is recognized the mineral composition of the ore is seldom measured or estimated to provide regular information for the diagnosis of operating problems. Some methods such as the QEM-SCAN (Whiten, 2008; Lamberg and Vianna, 2006) are available to measure the concentration of the minerals in ore samples but the method is time demanding and plant operators usually base their evaluation of the plant performances on chemical assays of metals or elements since this data is easier to obtain from ore samples.Usually samples of the streams of mineral processing plants are collected on a daily basis to be assayed for strategic elements. The obtained concentrations are balanced to produce coherent data with the material conservation constraint and then used to characterize the day to day operation of the plant in terms of recovery of valuable metals and grades of the marketable concentrates. The behavior of contaminant elements can also be monitored from this data allowing the operators to explain for instance a lower zinc concentrate grade by a more important contamination of iron. However such diagnosis is only partial as the contaminant element can be transported by different minerals. Indeed the iron contamination of a zinc sulfide concentrate may be caused by an inadequate depression of pyrite or due to another iron carrying mineral. A possible way to answer the question is to determine the concentrations of the various minerals in the ore and produced sealable concentrates. Since measuring the mineral contents of the ore could be a demanding task one should consider to estimate this data from the daily chemical assays of the sample collected on the main streams of the circuit. Some authors have already investigated the problem. Whiten(2008) described a method to estimate the mineral contents of an ore sample. Lamberg and Vianna(2006) proposed a method to do a sequential mineral reconstruction followed by a material balance. Few of these methods account for the mass conservation of the reconstructed mineral contents."

A career in the mining industry is both challenging and rewarding but comes with some unique complications. Few other industries have such a far reaching effect on individualsÆ lifestyles. Furthermore, few people working within the resource sector could say their job has had no effect on their lifestyle. Mineral deposits in Australia seem to exist predominantly in remote locations like Telfer, Mount Isa and Olympic Dam. With this comes a choice for young professionals; one that is not easy to make, with either alternative often having its pitfalls. This remote nature usually requires professionals (especially graduates and juniors) to choose between a fly-in, fly-out location or relocation to a remote town with less facilities (and some may argue attractions) than their coastal cousins. The challenge for young professionals is to pursue a career that will satisfy their professional goals while developing and maintaining away of life that is emotionally fulfilling.

The mining of mineral sands in coastal aquifers is often constrained by other land use conflicts and inappropriate controls imposed through a lack of understanding of environmental interactions and processes. The recent experience with the Tea Gardens mining operation illustrates how increasing our knowledge and understanding leads to more effective management of environmental problems. As well as a source of heavy minerals, the Tea Gardens sand bed serves as a town water supply source. From past experience it was believed that mining could cause undesirable increases in dissolved iron concentrations in the aquifer, but the reasons and mechanisms for this phenomenon were not clear. A water monitoring program was therefore designed for the mining operation which was aimed at protecting the water supply borefield from any detremental effects. After one year the results of the monitoring program were assessed in the light of new knowledge and understanding of iron hydrochemistry. It was found that the existing program was not achieving some of its major aims, and was therefore modified to a more effective and cost efficient program.

The mining industry is in the midst of dramatic change. Mining activities are moving from industrialized first world countries (Canada, Australia, and the United States) to the third world. This shift is occurring due to depleted reserves, tough environmental standards, and expensive labor in traditional mining countries. During a recent trip to South Africa, I was asked, owing to my educational background in economics and an international involvement in drilling and blasting, what changes could be anticipated in third world blasting practices as labor costs increase. It is from that beginning that this presentation has evolved.

Looking for an idyllic paradise that has investment and business potential as spectacular as the stunning views of mountains, the rich Ganesh Himal zinc-lead deposit exposed between 4,050 m and 5,000 m is the answer. Arising from the sea floor in a span of 55 million years, the enchanting Himalayas had remained one of the most potent factors influencing the Asian region. The challenges of the mighty Himalayas notwithstanding, it continues to provide opportunities for the humankind in optimum usage of the natural resources and sustainable development. Optimal management of natural resources in mountain areas through decision support tools offered by remote sensing will go a long way in realization of the Ganesh Himal Zinc-Lead Project. The authors have a real life endeavor spanning over 37 years in developing a mining industry in a mountainous region of Nepal and an attempt to integrate with the development of other natural attributes of the region. With rapid acceleration of science and technology, humankind has acquired power to transform his environment countless ways and on an unprecedented scale. While mineral resources are the pillars on which we have built industry and infrastructure, industrial countries in the North have been in the forefront of technological advancements, the developed countries of the South have been at the receiving end of exploitation of mineral resources worldwide. A relationship with natural environment, re-crafted by the civilizing impulse, to meet human demands are upcoming challenges for management of natural resource in sustainable manner for a livable world.

With the societal desire and drive towards low carbon energy sources, there is a growing awareness of the important role that minerals and metals will play with renewable energy technologies. Copper is an essential metal for technologies that generate energy from renewable sources, in particular for wind and solar photovoltaic energy systems. A recent report (Arrobas et al., 2017) estimated that the median increase in copper demand through to 2050 for wind technologies and for solar photovoltaics would need to be 250% and 300% respectively to meet the goal of a 2°C global temperature increase scenario compared with a 6°C global increase, which is largely an extension of current trends (IEA, 2018). The aim of this extended abstract is to demonstrate with the necessary increase in copper production for renewable energy technologies that sound sustainability performance across the global copper value chain is to the benefit of government, society and industry.CITATION:Corder, G D and Bangerter, P J, 2018. One of the core tenets of Sustainable Development is transparency and information sharing, i.e., government and corporate reporting. Governments report on issues within their sphere of responsibility to the degree that their constituents demand that they do so. Firms undertake reporting for two reasons: they are required to do so by law, and doing so makes good business sense. In recent years, stakeholders have come to see themselves as having a right to information about government actions and business operations that have the potential to affect their lives, health, community and environment. As a result, disparate groups, including industry associations, non-profit groups, academics, and individual firms, attempted to lay out what governments and firms should report. There are many types of sustainability reporting. In this paper we focus on three of them that both governments and firms utilize. We discuss the benefits of each. We argue that while the goal of complete and perfect data is not achievable or feasible, sustainability reporting of all three types is necessary to ensure that sound public and private decisions are made.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo desenvolver uma ferramenta de planejamento da produção de aço na Aciaria com foco na redução do ferro-gusa solidificado, através do balanço de massa integrado entre os altos-fornos e a estação de Pré-Tratamento do Gusa da Aperam South America. Os estudos mostraram que os balanços de massa elaborados apresentaram um grau de confiança satisfatório quando correlacionados aos dados industriais. O balanço de massa integrado é capaz de prever o melhor mix de produção na Aciaria em função da qualidade e do tipo de rota de refino do ferro-gusa.
