The Calsinter process for recovery from fly ash involves sintering the fly ash with calcium sulfate and calcium carbonate at 1200°C, followed by a dilute sulfuric acid leach step. Flue gas desulfurization sludge containing calcium sulfite, calcium sulfate, and unreacted calcium carbonate may be substituted for the calcium sulfate and calcium carbonate. Conversion of aluminum in fly ash by the sintering process to an acid-leachable species was measured as a function of sintering time and temperature in the range of 800°-1200°C The sinter-leach steps were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis, x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and elemental analysis. SEM photographs indicated that the glassy spheroids in the original fly ash were converted to a crystalline structure by the sintering reaction.

Recent work by Westwood et al. (reviewed in Refs. 1-6) has established that many rocks, minerals, ceramics, and glasses exhibit phenomenologically similar chemomechanical (Rebinder) effects when deformed in different liquid environments, apparently as the result of chemisorption-induced variations in their near-surface flow and flow-dependent fracture behavior. In particular, it appears that there exists an empirical, but apparently general, correlation between the near-surface flow stress of an inorganic nonmetal and its surface charge- namely, that such a solid is hardest at its zero point of charge (i.e., when its zeta potential [ ] = 0) and softens as [ ] increases, regardless of the sign of zeta. Moreover, because near-surface flow and fracture phenomena are two of the important determinants of the rates of machining and comminution processes, both Westwood et al. and others7 have been able to use this so-called "[ ]-correlation" to develop cutting fluids and grinding aids that in many instances have given rise to several fold increases in performance. In addition, Westwood et al. have demonstrated that both aqueous and organic environments can give rise to similar improvements in cutting rate for a given combination of tool and workpiece, provided that both impart the same surface charge to the work- piece (i.e., transfer the same number of electrons to or from its surface). This last finding implies that in any application it should always be possible to find some cutting fluid that is at once effective, cheap, nontoxic, and nonpolluting. Thus, reports of apparently similar environmental influences on the mechanical behavior of diamond,8 certain organic crystals and polymers,9-14 and coa1-15-21 suggest that it is pertinent to ask: (a) whether the [ ]-correlation (or any analogous relationship) extends to coal; and (b), if so, whether this relationship can be used to guide the development of superior aids for grinding coal. Accordingly, correlations have been sought between (1) the zeta potentials, (2) the hardnesses, and (3 and 4) the drilling and grinding characteristics of coals of different rank in different aqueous and organic environments. The role of pH, temperature, quantity of ferrous salt addition and degree of oxidation is investigated targeting the production of high emu spinel ferrites and effluent water complying regulatory standards with respect to Iron. manganese suspended solids and pH.

"Abstract - Diamond-drill hole DDH-B357, located 1.5 km north of the Brunswick No. 6 Zn-Pb- Cu-Ag volcanic-sediment-hosted massive sulfide (VSHMS) deposit, intersects three exhalative horizons within variably altered felsic volcanic rocks of the Nepisiguit Falls and Flat Landing Brook formations. These three petrographically indistinguishable iron formation intervals (Fe2O3T = 21.4 wt.%) likely represent cogenetic hydrothermal sedimentary units because they display a common geochemical signature: Fe2O3T = 42.9 ± 10.5 wt.%, MnO = 5.4 ± 3.1 wt.%, elevated base metal values (Zn+Pb = 1999 ± 1091 ppm), strong enrichment in additional exhalative components (CaO = 5.3 ± 3.9 wt.%; P2O5 = 1.43 ± 1.00 wt.%), oxidized signature (Fe/Mn = 10 ± 6), as well as a common immobile element signature (Zr/TiO2 = 0.025 ± 0.007) representative of a pelagic source. The calc-alkaline to transitional host volcanic rocks can be discriminated by Zr/TiO2, and to a lesser extent by Th/Nb: Nepisiguit Falls Formation: Zr/TiO2 = 0.053 ± 0.004, Th/Nb = 1.08 ± 0.37; Flat Landing Brook Formation: Zr/TiO2 = 0.107 ± 0.043, Th/Nb = 0.86 ± 0.17. A symmetrical repetition of the footwall-iron formation-hanging wall stratigraphic sequence is observed in DDH-B357, with distinct felsic volcanic rock domains separated by the three iron formations. This is best explained by parasitic F2 folds on the west flank of the south-plunging Brunswick antiform, similar to the fold closures known to host massive sulfide accumulations in the Brunswick No. 6 and No. 12 mines. Iron formation geochemistry and felsic volcanic rock chemostratigraphy from drill core sampling can provide an effective mineral exploration tool for the structurally complex rocks of the Bathurst Mining Camp. "Abstract - The Eel River area in the southwestern Miramichi terrane of New Brunswick contains a complete calc-alkaline suite of volcanic rocks that are interlayered with intervals of sedimentary and polylithic fragmental rocks, and are overlain by a thick sedimentary sequence. This package, collectively referred to as the Meductic Group, was deposited in a submerged volcanic arc setting interpreted to be part of the Popelogan arc. Rifting of this arc led to the development of the Tetagouche-Exploits back-arc basin, and formation of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits in bimodal volcanic rocks of the Bathurst Mining Camp in the northeastern Miramichi Terrane. Unlike the Bathurst Mining Camp, volcanic rocks in the southeastern Miramichi Highlands form a continuous calc-alkaline suite characterized by increasing Zr/TiO2 with increasing SiO2, in part resulting from progressive coupled assimilation and fractional crystallization of nested magma systems. Slumping of semi-consolidated volcanic and sedimentary rocks in topographically unstable areas resulted in numerous slumps and debris flows that are preserved throughout the Eel River area. In the early 1990s, the discovery of a large sulfide clast in a road cut along the Benton road sparked interest in the volcanogenic massive sulfide potential of the Eel River area. Subsequent drilling intersected smaller fragments, one clast of which graded 16.7% Zn, 5.6% Pb, 90 ppm Ag, and 220 ppb Au. The intersection of thin lenses of stratiform sulfides in another drillhole indicates favorable conditions for the preservation of massive sulfides. Their subsequent incorporation into synvolcanic debris flows resulted in the transport and deposition of sulfide clasts from hydrothermal vents to more distal locations. Similar to the Buchans deposits of Newfoundland, tracing these debris flows back to their source would be beneficial from an exploration perspective. Approximately 15 km to the southwest of the Eel River area, gold-bearing base metal sulfide clasts (11.1% Zn, 6.13% Pb, 0.19% Cu, 108 ppm Ag, and 1100 ppb Au) occur within intermediate-composition volcanic rocks at Monument Brook in eastern Maine. L’effondrement de roches volcaniques et sédimentaires semi-consolidées dans des secteurs topographiquement instables est à l’origine des nombreux slumps et coulées de débris qui sont préservés dans le secteur d’Eel River. Au début des années 1990, la découverte d’un large claste de sulfures le long de la route Benton provoqué un intérêt pour le potentiel en gisements de sulfures massifs volcanogènes dans les secteur d’Eel River. Des forages ont par la suite recoupé des fragments plus petits, dont un claste qui a retourné des teneurs de 16.7% Zn, 5.6% Pb, 90 ppm Ag et 220 ppb Au. Le recoupement de minces lentilles de sulfures stratiformes dans un autre forage indique des conditions propices à la préservation des sulfures massifs."

ChemSheet is a thermodynamic multi‐phase multi‐component simulation software, which is used as an Add‐in in Microsoft Excel. In ChemSheet, the unique Constrained Gibbs free energy method can be used to include dynamic constraints and reaction rates of kinetically slow reactions, yet retaining full consistency of the multiphase thermodynamic model. With appropriate data, ChemSheet models can be used to simulate reactors and processes in all fields of thermochemistry. The presentation will cover off‐line modeling of Cu‐flash smelters and advanced thermochemical simulation coupled with on‐line process control of Cu‐Ni smelting. The presentation will describe an off‐line model of Cu‐smelter based on critically assessed properties of the Al-Ca-Cu-Fe-O-S-Si –system (slag, matte and liquid metal) by using the quasichemical model. A four‐stage reactor model (shaft, settler, uptake and bath) is used for optimizing process parameters and feed particle distribution. As a second example, an advanced thermochemical model of a Ni-Cu sulphide smelting plant will be given. The on‐line model covers the operation of treating Ni-Cu-S concentrate via roasters, electric furnace and converters, producing a high grade Bessemer matte product for further refining. The model integrates the thermochemistry of the roasters and electric furnace, and predicts important process parameters such as degree of sulphur elimination in the fluid‐bed roasters, matte grade, iron metallization, slag losses and the iron to silica ratio in the electric furnace slag. Both models can be used to assist process engineers and operators in calculating the addition rates of coke, flux and air for different feed scenarios.

THE Kingsport formation, a part of the Knox dolomite of Ordovician age, is composed of 538 ft of dolomite and limestone. Numerous bands, layers and nodules of chert, arenaceous and shale zones are present. The characteristics displayed by these features have been useful in mapping, prospecting and mining. Perhaps a better understanding of the origin of these zones will increase their usefulness.

THE history of the production of sulfur from salt domes in Louisiana and Texas originated with the operations of the Union Sulphur Co. at Sulphur, La., followed by the Freeport Sulphur Co. at Bryanmound, Tex. Including the present development of Grande Ecaille by the Free-port Sulphur Co., which constitutes the tenth dome to be equipped for the production of sulfur in the Gulf Coast, less than 10 per cent of all the known domes have proved to contain sulfur in commercial quantities. The Grande Ecaille salt dome is in the tidal marsh of the Mississippi River delta in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. It is 10 miles southwest of the right descending bank of the river approximately 45 miles below the city of New Orleans and is within 4 miles of the shore line of the Gulf of Mexico.

Ground, air, and water vehicles can expose humans to substantial multi-axis vibration. Multiple input/multiple output relationships or models exist for estimating frequency response functions of linear systems1, 2. These relationships have been applied by some investigators to evaluate the effects of occupied seat vibration3, 4. Using a multiple input/single output model, this study investigated the effects of single- and combined-axis vibration in the fore-and-aft (X), lateral (Y), and vertical (Z) directions on vibration transmission to the human chest. Frequency response functions (transmissibilities) were estimated and compared for the back-on and back-off postures. Methods A rigid seat with seat back was mounted onto the Six Degree-of-Freedom Motion Simulator (SIXMODE). A flat acceleration vibration signal was generated between 2 and 40 Hz at 1.0 ms-2 rms in the single and combined X, Y, Z, XY, XZ, YZ, and XYZ axes. The signals were shifted in time so that the combined inputs were not fully correlated. Lightweight triaxial accelerometers were used to measure accelerations at the seat base (input) and at the bony manubrium of the chest (output). The maximum of nine frequency response functions (H(?)) or transmissibilities were estimated from the auto- and cross-spectra. The system transfer matrix for the XYZ inputs and chest Z output is [ ] where PxZ, PyZ, and PzZ are the cross-spectra between the three inputs at the seat base and the Z output at the chest, respectively, and Pxx, Pxy,…zz are the auto- and cross-spectra between the input signals (? not shown in Eq. 1). Equation 1 can be similarly written for the chest X and Y outputs. Matlab® was used to estimate the auto- and cross-spectral densities for calculating the transmissibilities, ordinary coherences (for single inputs), partial coherences, and multiple coherences. Results Figure 1 illustrates the major chest transmissibilities observed for the two postures. Vertical vibration showed a consistent influence on the chest X response (Chest X/Z), most likely causing chest pitch. Some chest Z responses were observed with X-axis inputs, but the results were variable and difficult to interpret. WITH a membership in the Institute of 32 years behind him, Chester Alan Fulton became an A.I.M.E. Director last month. In 1937 he served as Chairman of the Industrial Minerals Division. Mr. Fulton was born in Brooklyn on Dec. 18, 1853, and at the age of 22 graduated from the Columbia School of Mines. His first job was as assayer for the Standard Smelting Co., Rapid City, S. D., but he soon left to become shift boss in the cyanide plant of the Peregrina Mining & Milling Co., Guanajuato, Mexico. From 1908 to 1912 he was mine superintendent of the Guanajuato Mining & Milling Co., leaving there for two years of varied professional work. From 1914 to 1916 he was

"The property of Chesterville Mines, Limited, is in McGarry township, Timiskaming district, Ontario, about 25 miles east of Kirkland Lake. It consists of a group of fifteen claims that extend northeast from the KerrAddison mine for a distance of 2 miles.In June, 1906, two groups of prospectors left the town of Chesterville, Ontario, to prospect in northern Ontario. Silver had been discovered 3 years before at Cobalt and the large profits of this young mining camp were the principal incentive to extending the field of exploration northward. One group consisted of Dr. Reddick, Edward Flynn, John Hummel, William Knott, and Colin Cameron. The other group comprised J. T. Kearns, Herman Hummel, W. G. Barkley, and J. Elliott.The two groups travelled north by train to Haileybury and thence to Larder lake by canoe. Camps were pitched on the northeast arm of the lake, and within a short time a discovery was made by Edward Flynn of the first party, who found gold on the property now owned by Kerr-Addison Gold Mines, Limited. Herman Hummel and J. T. Kearns shortly afterwards made the second discovery, on what is now the Chesterville property. These discoveries, made some years prior to those at Porcupine and Kirkland Lake, are believed to be the first in that part of northern Ontario.The Hummel-Kearns claims were incorporated in the following year under the name of Chesterville Larder Lake Gold Mining Company, Limited. It was not, however, until 30 years later, in 1936, following the increased premium on gold, that sufficient capital was placed in the treasury of the Company to carry out an extensive diamond drilling programme. This exploratory drilling was started early in 1937 under the direction of Leo. J. Kearns, and a large body of ore was intersected in the first drill hole. Underground work was started in 1938, a mill was built, and the first gold brick was poured on July 29th, 1939."

In a little over three years, Chevron Niugini has built up a team of relatively young, hard working men and women, mostly Papua New Guineans, who spend most of their working days out among people in the Southern Highlands and Gulf Provinces who are directly affected by the Kutubu Petroleum Development Project. These are Land and Community Relations officers, or LACROs. They take on a huge responsibility, not only representing Chevron but also being friend, advisor and negotiator, frequently dispensers of medicines, and agricultural advice and more. When things go well, others get the praise, when things go wrong, LACROs are the martyrs. Just as the geologists who locate the oil, the drillers who find it, the engineers who design the facilities, the construction gangs who build them, the landowners who claim it, and the Government who monitor it, so are the LACROs part of a team.

INTRODUCTION Chevron&apos;s Uranium Mill is located near Panna Maria, Texas; 70 miles southeast of San Antonio. Designed by Kaiser Engineering, the Mill will process a nominal 2500 dry T.P.D. of uranium bearing ore containing 15% uncombined moisture. Earl Torgerson, San Mateo, California, is the consulting metallurgist on process design. Feed to the plant consists of a mixture of high, medium and low grade sandy day ore; the average grade of the ore will be 0.7% throughout the life of the project. The ore is delivered to the mill via truck and stored by type in individual piles on a flat storage area. The ore is fed by conveyor to a semi-autogenous grinding mill. The SAG mill discharge slurry is pumped either to a storage tank or to the first of five mechanically agitated leach tanks where both H2SO and NaC103 are added. Following leaching, the slurry is mixed with thickener No. 2 overflow before being pumped to a six-thickener, countercurrent decantation circuit where the solution containing uranium is separated from the leach residue. The residue is washed essentially free of solubilized U308 values at the sixth thickener and discharged to an adjacent tailings pond. The first thickener overflow, containing approximately 0.4 grams U308 per liter, is filtered for clarification and sent to the liquid ion exchange (solvent extraction) section. The pregnant aqueous solution is mixed with organic solvent containing amine on which the complex uranyl sulfate ions are absorbed. The immiscible aqueous and organic solutions are mixed and separated in each of the four stages of solvent extraction. The final pregnant organic is directed to a stripping section. A strip solution containing (NH4)2S04 (ammonium sulfate) and NH4C1 (ammonium chloride) is contacted and separated from the organic in each of the four mixer-settler units. The strip solution is mixed with NH3 and the uranium precipitates along with trace amounts of sulfate, chloride, and ammonia. After washing in a thickener, the uranium precipitate or yellowcake is centrifuged and dried in a multiple hearth roaster. Overflow from the yellowcake thickener is recycled back to the stripping section of the solvent extraction circuit. The dried yellowcake concentrate contains more than 98% U308; diluents include H20, ammonia, chloride, etc.. Impurity concentratons in the product are sufficiently low, after drying, to permit direct shipment to refinement installations. ORE RECEIVING Ore from one or more mines will be stored on a pad adjacent to the uranium processing mill. Ore stored in the area may total 200,000 tons or more, which is equivalent to over a two month treatment reserve for the mill. In addition to providing surge capacity, the proposed storage facility permits natural oxidation of the ore and affords an area which, in turn, improve plant U308 recovery and reduces consumption of oxidizing reagents. The uranium bearing ore is segregated at the storage area into several distinct types. One group can be identified by its sandy, clay-like matrix and will be distinguished by its U308 concentration of high, medium, or low. Other ores contain substantial quantities of carbonaceous shale, typical of ore in the area. Feed is recovered from any one or combination of piles, in accordance with operating requirements and recovery factors. The run-of-mine ore, at 15% moisture, is transferred to a stationary, 24-inch by 24-inch grizzly. Undersize material falls into a 280-ton surge hopper located below grade, while oversize material is removed for preliminary size reduction. A sump-pump is located at the reclaim hopper to recover excess mositure and ore spillage for processing. Plant feed is continuously drawn from beneath the hopper at an average rate of 120 tons per hour by means of an apron feeder. The hopper is equipped with a low level safety system to protect the apron feeder assemble. The ore is transferred to a belt conveyor, elevated and discharged into a semi-autogeneous grinding (SAG) mill. Water addition at the discharge point is automatically controlled by a feed rate, moisture analyzer system located on the belt conveyor. GRINDING Minus 24-inch ore, at a rate of 120 mosit tons per hour and cyclone underflow at a rate of 137 moist tons per hour are combined with a controlled 186 gallons per minute fresh, warm plant process water. The mixture, at an average 68% solids, is fed to the SAG mill. The viscous mass is subjected to grinding at a temperature moderately above ambient resulting from use of the 140ºF well water. The 16.5&apos;x5.0&apos; Marcy Mill is driven by a 500 H.P. A.C. Motor. The mill will rotate at 73.4% of critical speed or 14.06 R.P.M. Eight percent of the mill&apos;s volume will be occupied by steel grinding balls; 22% by pulp. The mill is designed to rotate in either direction, in order to obtain maximum lifter and liner life. The SAG mill is equipped with a trommel having ½ -inch slots for removal of oversize material at its discharge and the large or oversize material is collected and either recirculated periodically or discarded. The undersize slurry is diluted to 64% solids with the addition of hot well water or mine water to the mill discharge sump. The flow is automatically controlled utilizing data from a gamma density meter. The slurry from the mill discharge sump is pumped to hydrocyclones to classify the particles. The property is serviced by a twelve-mile all-weather high-way leaving the main St. Felicien-Chibougamau highway at mileage 121. This road junction will be a railway siding on the C.N.R. St. Felicien-Chibougamau branch line in early 1957. The property lies 30 miles due south from the town of Chibougamau. The mine-sponsored Chibougamau Explorers town has a population of 250 with 28 residences and a well equipped recreation centre.The original showing was found by Rider Storn, a prospector financed by Val d'Or interests during the 1950 field season. This showing did not stand up to detailed prospecting but it did lead to the discovery of the main zone by A. Oakley during the following winter.The company was incorporated in I 950 under the presidency of E. Ayrhart. Financing following the initial drilling involved an increase of capitalization from 3 to 5 million shares and the advent of financing and management control by Anacon Lead Mines Limited.Exploration and development to Jan. I, 1956, has included 42,331 feet of surface diamond drilling; 31,363 feet of underground drilling; a 3-compartment shaft to 1,245 feet, with 8 levels at 150-foot intervals; and I 1,054 feet of drifts, crosscuts, and raises. Ore reserves to the 900-foot level, proven and partly developed, total 546,725 tons averaging 0·30 ounces gold and 0·93 per cent copper. A mill with capacity of 500 to 750 tons will be installed by January 1956.GeologyThe Chibougamau Explorers property lies along the belt of Keewatin volcanics striking through Bachelor Lake, Opawica Lake, Doda Lake, Coapatina, Norhart Lake, and Rohault Lake, where it is in close proximity to the paragneisses of the Grenville series. The boundary of the paragneisses, a gradational contact, lies within a mile of the Chibougamau Explorers shaft collar."

John A. Church, New York City: It requires some courage to appear as a critic of a theory which is not only the fashion among American geologists but is usually presented by them in terms which imply that any other views are an exhibition of ignorance. Still, I am obliged to say that the theory of lateral secretion as it is stated in this and other writings of Mr. Emmons and other geologists has not added much to our real knowledge or clearness of view. In the earlier and less developed stages of the theory, when it was used as Sandberger used it, to show that certain veins were probably derived from the rocks in which they lie, or which are adjacent, it was valuable in pointing us to an immediate source of ore-deposition. When we are driven to assume the existence of undiscoverable rocks at an unknown but certainly a considerable distance and in an unknown direction from the vein, I do not see that we have improved upon the despised " unknown source in depth " with which our ignorance has been covered so long. The new theory may suffer from adolescence, and these points map be cleared up by further study, but I speak of it as it is. Differentiation in a magma, by which a metal is concentrated in one member of a series of outflows, may explain why certain ores have favored a given locality with their presence; but it is not a necessary precedent to ore-formation. Concentration in the source of supply cannot be a requirement, for the forces that have been able to take up four or five tons of gold from an extensive body of rock must be able to collect four or five thousand tons of lead, copper or nickel from a proportionately more extended body of rock. That is to say, concentration is no more essential for these metals than it is for gold. In fact, differentiation, as it is now explained, is not an advance upon old ideas, but a retreat from them. It was noticed long ago that violent eruptive phenomena, however long continued, died away in solfataras; and when a vein came to be looked upon as an extinct solfatara the inference was ready that veins are eruptive in the sense that the solfataric waters collected the metals from the unerupted residue of the magma and carried them to the veins. The early views carried differentiation further than the modern school.

F. W. Gordon, Philadelphia, Pa.: There can be no objection to the use of cross-compound blowing-engines; and when they are condensing they are susceptible of great range of duty with slight loss in efficiency. By those who have use for the full heat of the waste gases, this type of engine is advantageous; but many furnaces are not so located. The pig-iron is their finished product, and the gases are to be employed only for furnace-use. In this case simple engines are preferable, being less expensive and having less parts to take care of. These reasons determined the introduction of the engines, a sketch of which is distributed at this session. There are three of these engines to furnish blast for two furnaces, for a make of abont 250 tons per day, using 75 per cent. anthracite and 85 per cent. magnetic ores; and they are expected to blow up to twenty pounds pressure per square inch. For blast-furnaces I prefer the single to the coupled engine, except
