Defects which occur at the surface of a continuously cast slab impede the throughput of final product, because an extra stage in the process is required to grind the defects away before further processing can take place. Defect prediction and the minimization of the occurrence of defects is required. The use of two models to define the defect propagation is explained. Both models are derived using system identification techniques such as auto-regression with exogenous input(ARX). One model is used to determine the effect of manipulated variables such as casting speed and measured disturbances such as mould level on temperatures within the mould. The other isused to determine or indicate the effect of the mould temperatures on the occurrence of defects such as transversal cracks. The latter model can be used to predict when the defects will occur and the former can be used to control the occurrence of the defects. Traditional batch flotation tests produce a limited number of data points from which to evaluate the kinetics of the process. In this research, continuous weighing of froth, from a modified circular flotation cell, using a computer/data acquisition system., has been coupled with chemical analyses from intermittent froth sampling. This combination has permitted the experimental data to be smoothed such that the flotation kinetic parameters could be determined with enhanced confidence. To demonstrate the procedure, a galena ore was floated to permit flotation kinetics to be investigated as a function of cell parameters. It was shown that the kinetic data of this lead flotation most closely correlated with the Huber-Panu three parameter model. In addition the results illustrated the effect of froth thickness, froth scraper rate and air flow rate on the cell performance, in terms of mass flow, grade and recovery.

East Pit Lake is an artificially created lake that resulted from the remediation and reclamation of surface coal mining operations at TransAlta Utilities' Whitewood Mine in the Wabamun area west of Edmonton, Alberta. The original excavation resulted from the creation of a mine end cut at the northern extent of the mining operation. The area of the surficial drainage basin that feeds East Pit Lake was relatively small. Therefore, most of the inflow and outflow from the lake would result from regional ground water flow. There was a concern about the lake's ability to provide a suitable habitat for a sportfish population. To determine the final recovered water level and rates of recovery, a two-dimensional ground water flow model was used. Data supplied by nested piezometers in and around the mine were used to calibrate the computer simulation and assess predicted recovery.

We often get a bad rap, sometimes for good reason. But we do have qualities that are often overlooked. For example, I am happy to share with my generation a real desire to make a difference in the world and a commitment to innovation. Does this mean I think we always have good ideas? No – especially not right away. After all, few of us came anywhere near a piece of construction equipment until arriving for our first job, as was the case for me. We may have fancy degrees, but not many of us learned to run a jackleg drill in school.Two weeks after graduating college in 2011, I packed up my bags and moved to New York City to work as a field engineer for Traylor Bros. Inc. on the Queens Bored Tunnels project (Granite/Traylor /Frontier Kemper, JV), part of NYC MTA’s multi-billion dollar Long Island Railroad East Side Access project. It was here I became acquainted with the notorious New York City union workers. Perhaps the greatest challenge of my career thus far was earning the respect of the field supervision and craft workers on this first project.The first time I asked a maintenance mechanic to clean a piece of equipment in accordance with our maintenance protocol I got a flat-out “No.” It was the most powerless I had ever felt. But why should these experienced workers trust a 21-year-old girl with her civil engineering degree and no prior experience? I realized no employee on the job had any reason to listen to me — not until I proved my worth. Fortunately, I arrived on the job site just as we were commissioning the slurry plant for the first tunnel drive. I dove into learning as much about the slurry tunneling process as possible and was able to quickly pick up the ins and outs of running the slurry separation plant. As none of the other engineers or management had first-hand experience on a slurry tunneling job, I soon became the go-to engineer in the slurry plant. No one questioned me if I asked to have something done around the plant after that, or if they did, they quickly learned that I had a convincing answer as to the need for the task. I was even able to play a large role in shaping our slurry monitoring and control methodology."

This paper, describing the mining method at the Black Butte quicksilver mine, is one of a series of papers being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various districts of the United States. It is presented to show the mining practice and costs in the successful treatment of low-grade quicksilver deposits. The operation discussed is an excellent example of w1-pat can be done in working a limited tonnage of low-grade ore under sound management. The Black Butte mine is situated at Black Butte, Lane County, in the southern part of the State of Oregon, 17-1/2 miles from Cottage Grove -- a station on the Siskiyou branch of the Southern Pacific Co. The Black Butte mining district lies in the foothills of the Calapooia Mountain Range, which connects with the Cascade Range on the east and with the Coast Range on the west. The elevation at '.lie reduction plant is 1,000 feet above sea level. The apex of Black Butte Mountain, or which the mine is situated, has an elevation of 2,700 feet. The district possesses exceptional natural facilities infrequently met with elsewhere for the mining and reduction of cinnabar ores. "The ore-element patterns in regional lake sediment geochemical survey data from four areas of Newfoundland containing granite-related mineralization reveal characteristics which can be used to identify mineralized granitoids. The St. Lawrence Granite with its fluorite deposits, the Ackley Granite with molybdenite mineralization, the Grey River tungsten lodes and the newly discovered Mo- W mineralization at Granite Lake, Central Newfoundland, have all been included in the regional lake sediment geochemical surveys, which now cover about 90,000 km2 of the Island of Newfoundland. The lake sediments over these mineralized granites show diagnostically high values of Mo, F, Pb, Zn and, in three of the four cases, U, together with locally high Ag and Cu values. Furthermore, these ore-metals display a distinctive zoning pattern about the intrusives, which can be related to the classical ore-metal zoning patterns developed about many types of mineralized granitoids.IntroductionGranitoids in Eastern Canada are receiving renewed interest as potential hosts of tin, tungsten, uranium and related mineralization. Although a number of mineral deposits and showings have been known from a few granites (sensu lato) in the region for many years, granites had generally received little attention as potential hosts of metallic mineralization until the recent resurgence in interest in the mineral potential of these rocks. In Newfoundland, where granitoid rocks underlie about 30070 of the land area, petrologic data are available from some granites, particularly those in eastern Newfoundland (Strong et al., 1974; Strong, 1980), but in southern and southwestern Newfoundland the data base is sparse, and indeed in many cases individual plutons are not delineated on the geological maps of the area . Most of the available data on Newfoundland graniotolds have been summarized by Strong (1980), who gives a general assessment of their mineral potential by comparing their physical, mineralogical and petrochemical attributes with mineralized granites elsewhere in the world."

Geometallurgical modelling of an orebody provides benefits to a mine by gaining a better understanding of the ore characteristics and how they affect the performance of the concentrator. With this knowledge, plant operating conditions can be adjusted to optimise throughput and recovery in advance of the arrival of particular ore types. Therefore, it is extremely important that the origin of the ore being processed is known as accurately as possible. Depending on the homogeneity of the ore characteristics, reliance on assumptions about stockpile residence times, scheduling and material handling can render the best geometallurgical models useless.The solution adopted at Agnico Eagle’s Kittilä mine was to utilise Metso SmartTags™ and in-house expertise to develop a system that continuously and accurately links geotechnical and lab data from the mine to the performance of the plant. This application presented several unique opportunities and challenges. For example, this was the first installation of a SmartTag™ system for geometallurgical modelling in an underground mine. Challenges included the fact that the system installation is routinely subjected to temperatures below -20°C.The system was installed and commissioned in early 2013 and has been operating continuously since. Kittilä has begun to see the benefits of the system, with an increased understanding of how different ores are processed in the concentrator. Other advantages include the ability to alert operators about the arrival of difficult ores and a better understanding of the ore handling systems.This paper describes the installation and use of the system at Kittilä and details some of the geometallurgical relationships that have been developed using the data collected so far.CITATION:La Rosa, D, Rajavuori, L, Korteniemi, J and Wortley, M, 2014. No presente trabalho, poli (tereftalato de etileno) virgem (PETV) e pós-consumo (PETPC) foram aditivados com um oligômero multifuncional estirênico-acrílico-epóxi (Joncryl POLYAD PR 002) comercializado como extensor de cadeia para polímeros de condensação como o PET, visando avaliar o comportamento da massa molar destes polímeros durante o processamento. PETV e PETPC, com e sem a incorporação do aditivo, foram preparados em misturador interno Haake Rheomix, com rotores tipo roller, empregando diferentes níveis do extensor de cadeia. As massas molares foram estimadas a partir de medições de torque e temperatura. Os resultados mostram que as estimativas com base em medições de torque em tempo real foi um indicador rápido e preciso da eficácia da extensão da cadeia do PET. O aditivo extensor de cadeia compensou a perda de massa molar durante o processamento, o efeito foi afetado pelo nível de aditivo presente.

Finely ground beryl was decomposed by mixing with ground limestone and soda ash and heating at 900°C for 4-6 hr. The sintered mater:al was then crushed and leached by boiling under reflux with 5N sulphuric acid for up to 4 hr. The liquor containing Be, AI, Fe and other elements as sulphates, was separated from the residue which consisted mainly of silica and gypsum, either by filtration or bydecantation washing.The clarified leach liquor was first treated to remove Fe+++ by contacting with a primary amine-kerosene solution in 2 countercurrent stages. The iron free liquor was then passed to a 4-stage counter-current extraction unit where it was contacted with O·5M di- (2 ethyl hexyl) phosphoric acid (EHPA) in kerosene. Under the operating conditions, 99 per cent of the Be and 7 per cent of the Al was extracted.The Be and Al were stripped from the organic phase by sodium hydroxide solution of suitable concentration to form soluble "beryllate" and "aluminate" respectively. Most of the Be was subsequently precipitatedas Be(OH)2 by heating the alkaline solution to 90°C, the Al remaining in solution. After filtration and washing, the Be(OH)2 could be ignited directly to BeO at about 1000°C or used as a feed to further purification stages if required.A small counter-current extraction unit was operated continuously using liquor derived from the sintering and leaching stages. Dataobtained in batch laboratory tests were confirmed. A product obtained by ignition of the washed "beryllate" precipitate contained more than 99 per cent BeO.INTRODUCTIONIn 1958 an investigation was commenced into the recovery of beryllium oxide from beryl, as part of a programme to utilize mineral resources of South Australia. The separation of certain minerals by electrostatic techniques can be difficult due to their similar electrical conductivity, and any technique to improve this can be useful in certain difficult separation applications. Triboelectric differences between mineral scan result in certain minerals acquiring small positive or negative charges prior to inductive electrostatic separation. By changing the polarity of inductive separation, relative changes in mineral recovery can be observed, which may be beneficial. In this brief study a JKTech mineral liberation analyser (MLA) was used to evaluate the effect of polarity change on selected minerals present in the Richards Bay Minerals deposit, and an approximate triboelectric series based on this behaviour is presented.

"A computer system for the design of open pits to mine stratiform orebodies has been developed for use at Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Ltd. The particular requirements of such a system, for example, the accuracy of representation of geological detail and the ability to follow footwalls, arc described in this paper, together with the methods that have been adopted to satisfy them.A modified version of the Open Pit Design Program of Rio Tinto Zinc Consultants, Ltd. is incorporated in the system and the geological data are converted into a form usable by the computer by means of a pencil follower. Some of the uses which have been made of the system are described, with reference to the long- and medium-term planning of the Nchanga Open Pit, the major producing pit at Chingola Division."

Several industrial-scale HydroFloat separators have recently been installed at Mosaic?s South Fort Meade beneficiation plant for the purpose of improving phosphate recovery and throughput capacity. This technology was implemented after numerous laboratory, bench-scale and on-site, pilot-scale test campaigns. The results from this detailed test work provided sufficient justification for the complete retrofit of the existing coarse and ultra-coarse flotation cells. Data indicate that the metallurgical results obtained with the full-scale separators are consistent with that obtained during both the bench- and pilot-scale evaluations. The benefits, theory of operation and commissioning of the equipment are also discussed.

Lost foam casting patterns are foamed polystyrene shapes glued together into the shape of the part to be cast and are coated with a refractory material consisting of a mineral mixture and binders. Prior to casting, a significant number of the patterns are damaged and inevitably land-filled. In this study, a process is developed for the recovery of foamed polystyrene from the coating and glue contaminants. The process consists of shredding, impact comminution, size classification and density separation. It is successful in separating up to 97% of the contaminants, while recovering 95% of the polystyrene.

Subduction zone magmatism is a direct response to tectonic and chemical processes operating at convergent margins. Changes in the tectonic configuration of plate boundaries in SE Asia during the Cenozoic had consequences for the nature and volume of magma produced. Retreat or advance of the trench hinge has probably been an important process in controlling the presence or absence of magmatism in SE Asian subduction zones. This process also provides a means of replenishing the mantle wedge and counteracting the effects of melt extraction in depleting the wedge. Changes in the nature of recycled material and lithologies of the over-riding plate also have the potential to influence the lavas that are erupted in arcs. Several locations in SE Asia have experienced magmatism bearing the geochemical signature of subduction but are remote from coeval subduction zones. Such magmatism requires an earlier period of mantle enrichment by subduction but may result from localised extension. The distribution of such magmatism may provide information of tectonic value. Some adakitic magmatism occurred in tectonic settings where there is no evidence for subduction of young oceanic crust at the time of magma genesis. Slab melting in such settings is not possible and alternative mechanisms are required to explain the occurrence of, at least some, adakitic lavas.

In the proposed criterion for coal a distinction is made between brittle and "psuedo-ductile" failure. This criterion is the basis for the development of new equations for coal pillar strength, including a transition from brittle fracture to pseudo-ductile yielding. In addition the equations obtained allow the critical minimum pillar dimensions to be calculated to avoid "catastrophic" and "ultimate failure".The validity of these formulae can be tested by comparing their results with pillar case histories derived from the literature.

"In this investigation, a sponge gold sample (99.92% pure) has been leached with ammonium thiosulfate solution. The effects of CuSO4, (NH4)2S2O3, (NH4)2SO4, NH4OH and retention time on the gold leaching % (extraction %) and thiosulfate oxidation % (consumption %) have been studied. The copper ion acts as a catalyst in gold dissolution. On the other hand, it also accelerates oxidation of thiosulfate (consumption). It was found in this study that the best gold extraction condition was obtained at 43.2 ks with 0.8 - 1.0x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2S2O3, 30 mol/m3 CuSO4, 2.0 - 3.0x103 mol/m3 NH4OH, 0.4 - 0.5x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2SO4, pH 10±0.2 and 150 rpm. The thiosulfate oxidation was about 15% of the initial concentration.For gold recovery from the pregnant solution, the trioctylmethyl ammonium chloride (TOMAC) was used in this investigation as an extractant to extract gold from thiosulfate solution without pH and other adjustments. The effects of gold concentration, pH, ammonia, thiosulfate and cupric ionic concentrations, extractant and diluent concentrations and retention time on the gold recovery were investigated. It was found that 180 mol/m3 extractant diluted with n-octant at O/A ratio of 1:1 could extracted the 100% of gold in 0.6 ks from the thiosulfate solution at the optimal leaching conditions. The 100% gold stripping could be achieved with 10% thiourea solution."

The element Calcium element has a unique place in the production of etals, intermetallics and other compounds. The unusualness arises from the fact that we have several possible reductants – metallic calcium, calcium carbide, calcium cyanamide and calcium hydride. A review of how metallic calcium is manufactured and utilized is presented. The difficulties involved in producing the metal in large quantities and price implications are noted. . Fundamental thermodynamics of how these act as reductants are shown, along with the historic application of these in metal production during the past century and a half. Alternate applications as to how to control the cost of the reductant is indicated, such as the numerous attempts in making low cost titanium utilizing direct or indirect calcium reductant.

The recovery of copper and cobalt from ancient copper slags from the Küre region of Turkey was investigated. A fayalitic-type of ancient copper slag containing 1.24% Cu, 0.53% Co and 53.16% Fe were subjected to an experimental study. Two different routes were followed to recover the metal values. The first route was roasting the slag with pyrite followed by leaching. The second route was flotation of the slags, roasting of the flotation tailings with pyrite and leaching. The second route was found to be suitable for the treatment of the copper slag studied. In the flotation step, a copper concentrate containing approximately 11% Cu was produced with a 77% recovery while 93% of the cobalt stayed in the tailings. In the roasting experiments, the effects of roasting time, pyrite: slag ratio and roasting temperature on the dissolution efficiencies of Cu and Co were investigated, and the optimum conditions were determined. In the tests, 87% of the cobalt dissolution was observed after one hour of roasting at 500°C with a pyrite: slag ratio of 3:1. The copper dissolution in the tests was 31%. Based on the results of this study, a process flowsheet is proposed for the evaluation of these slags.

The Taupo Volcanic Zone inNew Zealand and the Philippine Mobile Belt in the Philippines are characterized by active subduction, active volcanism and high seismicity. The main factors affecting characteristics of geothermal systems in both countries are: tectonic setting, source magmas, maturity of the systems, and depth to the degassing magma body. Within New Zealand, geothermal systems are grouped into arc- and rift-type. Fluids in arc-type systems contain high amounts of volatiles (<20%), with high CO2/Cl, CO2/He, and N2/Ar ratios. Mantle-type volatiles predominate in rift-type systems. Philippine geothermal systems are largely arc-type, the topography is rugged, leading to the separation of water and vapour upflows, as opposed to the overlap found in New Zealand. The relatively shallow depths of degassing magma bodies in the Philippines results in steeper geochemical gradients, leading to higher proportions of arc-type magmatic water (>40%) and higher Cl contents (3000 - 10 000 mg/kg), Maximum temperatures are also higher, reaching up to >400¦C. Arc-type alteration assemblages in New Zealand and the Philippines are similar. Because Philippine geothermal systems are less mature, have higher temperatures and steeper geochemical gradients than New Zealand ones, advanced argillization is more widespread occurring down to depths of 2000 m. Mineral phases are more varied due to the active input of magmatic waters and the formation of vapor conditions at depth, forming P04-, B-, Li-, Ce-, F-, and Cl-bearing minerals at high temperatures. In the Philippines, high temperature magmatic-hydrothermal to contact metamorphic assemblages containing biotite, amphiboles and pyroxenes are relatively common, but rare in New Zealand.
