Since the end of World War n, many important developments have taken place in the investigation of the phenomenon of brittle fracture in mild steel. Fractures in certain classes of welded ships, in welded bridges, penstocks, etc., focussed a great deal of attention on the interrelationships of design factors, service conditions, and steel quality on the generation of catastrophic failures.Much publicity has been given these major failures, and there is perhaps a tendency to forget that mild steel, under certain conditions, as well known to behave in a brittle fashion in a wide range of everyday engineering applications.For instance, many who are connected with the haulage and lifting of heavy loads will be familiar with the bright "crystalline" fractures of crane hooks and chains which sometimes follow sudden jarring; those concerned with the heavy pressing and shaping of steel plate will not be unaware that at times sudden brittle splits or tears will develop for no obvious reason in, say, rolled pipes or in dishings.In fact it will be evident upon reflection that in many cases the conditions which mild steel has to withstand during processing into an engineering part or structure are more severe than those it wili be called upon to endure during service. Mechanical sampling from conveyors has historically been a staple in the iron ore industry when information related to chemistry, sizing and moisture is required. In order to comply with ISO 3082:2009, samples can be taken either on a mass or time basis provided no bias is introduced by periodical variation in quality or quantity. With the introduction of mechanical sample carousels, you also have the opportunity to collect samples on a mass or time basis. In order to optimise automatic sample stations in a changing production environment, BHP Billiton Iron Ore (BHPBIO) has developed a simulation model that enables the various combinations of mass–mass, mass–time, time–time and time–mass to be investigated.The sample station model can utilise actual (variable) feed rates to achieve high resolution and enables the simulation of sample size variation. Cutter speeds and other settings can then be adjusted to better optimise the performance of the sample station with regards to optimal sample size as well as ensuring the sample station is in compliance with ISO 3082. The model can also assist process engineers in adjusting settings to better optimise the sample station and reduce unwanted events such as blockages. The model can be easily modified to conform to various sample station designs. Certain gas wells tend to form hydrates in the production tubing. This paper outlines a method developed and used by the Author's company to overcome the problem. The injection of glycol to control hydrates results in sufficient dehydration to allow the gas to be trans-ported through a field-gathering system b a treatment plant. Sub-surface injection of glycol also offers a method of introducing corrosion inhibitors into the gas stream. The major operating difficulties have been overcome and the system is now in use in the northeastern part of British Columbia.

Open-type, or main beam, tunnel boring machines (TBMs) can achieve impressive rates of production. This type of TBM typically outperforms other types of TBMs currently in use around the world. In good ground conditions, main beam machines have achieved production rates of more than 1 km/month (0.6 miles/month). However, installing effective ground support in poorer rock conditions on main beam machines can be a major cause of concern. The design of main beam machines is such that installation of ground support equipment, particularly at the front of the machine in what is commonly known as the L1 support zone, has traditionally been limited to rock drills and basic working platforms. Personnel working in the L1 zone have, until recently, been protected by roof supports and extended fingers, often with restricted access to working areas.

Furnace run-outs can cause extended furnace downtime for repair, while leaks or more severe failures in the cooling system can lead to brick hydration or in severe cases, steam explosions. These incidents can result in lost production, damage to equipment, injuries and casualties. To prevent such incidents, reliable and accurate techniques to monitor the critical components of the furnace such as refractory lining, furnace structure, taphole integrity and main water circuits are required. This paper describes several advanced methods that have been developed to assess the condition of furnace integrity, refractory lining, tapholes and cooling water circuits.

The use of column flotation cells for recovery of phosphate is becoming more common practice in certain parts of the world (Brazil, Russia) where igneous phosphate ores are processed. Igneous phosphates are generally finer grained (< 200µm) than some of the traditional sedimentary phosphates (<400µm). Australian phosphate from the Georgina basin is sedimentary, but has a much finer grain size (typically < 106µm) than similar deposits in North Africa and the USA.In 2013, Arianne Phosphate completed a bankable feasibility study for the development of their igneous phosphate deposit at the Lac a Paul site in Quebec. Initially, lab test work and bench scale piloting indicated that using traditional mechanical flotation would be able to produce adequate concentrate grade and an economic level of recovery, but would necessitate the installation of a complex and operationally challenging flotation circuit. Later pilot plant testing using column cells resulted in a significant reduction in process complexity and facilitated the processing of the -20µm ore fraction which resulted in a 10% increase in P2O5 recovery and a 5% increase in concentrate grade %P2O5.Flotation column testing achieved a concentrate grade of 38.6% P2O5 at a P2O5 recovery of 90%. Using a mechanical flotation cell circuit, the concentrate grade was 36.4% P2O5 with a P2O5 recovery of only 78.8%. A noticeable feature of the testing was the simplicity of the column flotation circuit configuration (Rougher + 2 stages of cleaning + Cleaner Scavenger) compared to the mechanical flotation cell circuit (Rougher + Scavenger + 3 stages of cleaning).The financial benefit for this case study was estimated using a sales price of US$ 195/t FOB for a 38.6% P2O5 product, and an assumed cost of production of US$ 95/t, the netback price is calculated at US$100/t. For a daily milling rate of 55,000t/d, the improved flotation performance provides additional concentrate production of 1,203t/d. Using the netback price calculated above, this calculates to additional gross profit of US$ 120,260/d.Annualised, this equals US$ 40.7 million in additional revenue for a similar or reduced CAPEX.The use of column flotation on fine grained phosphate ore types often requires fine grinding and desliming to liberate the phosphate value, such as the Australian sedimentary phosphate ores. Bellis and Hardy was interesting to me and has led me to make a few remarks concerning some of the points brought out. The question of employing correct hardening temperatures is one that is sadly neglected, particularly in many large plants that forge and treat their machine tools for private use. As is most aptly remarked in this paper, "The custom of using one, high-speed temperature for all tools is very poor practice;" still, such practice is more common than otherwise. An instance came to my attention some time ago, in connection with some work with the standardization of high-speed steels for machine tools, where there were no less than six different brands of alloy steels being used for machine tools such as lathe, shaper, planer, boring mill and cutters of like nature. All of these different steels received identical heat and forging treatment-or at least that was the aim of the tool hardener. That the results were highly unsatisfactory goes without saying. That the hardening department of many plants is conducted on a rule-of-thumb fashion is the reason for a great deal of the trouble and disappointment which seems to be the lot of many tool-steel users. Exceedingly crude execution is the rule rather than the exception, and it is no small wonder that the results are as good as they sometimes happen to be. It would seem that at the present price of alloy steels the subject should receive a closer scrutiny by purchasers than it does. One not familiar with the workings of souse plants that disdain to lend an ear to scientific heat treatment would scarcely give credence to some of the methods employed, not only in the treatment of the steel but also in its selection and purchase. Heating for hardening should be conducted under close pyrometric control only after the correct hardening temperature has been determined.

Mediterranean regions such as Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Corsica and New Caledonia have experienced epidemics of malignant mesothelioma as a result of non-occupational, ??domestic?? exposure to tremolite asbestos and fibrous erionite. This exposure to tremolite asbestos and fibrous erionite is typified ??domestic?? due to its prevalence in regions with natural deposits of tremolite asbestos (or fibrous erionite) where the material from tremolite asbestos or fibrous erionite is used for domestic applications such as whitewashing. However, these exposures may be useful in examining the potential consequences of even small amounts of amphibole asbestos fibers in the ambient air. It can also elucidate the effects of fibers that behave like amphibole asbestos. However, this type of exposure is not useful for studying the potential effects of small amounts of asbestos in the ambient air of big cities due to the differing nature of the fiber types and modes of exposure between the regions. © 2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. Viewed abstractly, a mill may be defined as a mineral processing facility located somewhere between the mine and the tailings storage area, Just how mining operations and the demands of tailings storage affect mill design is, the subject of this paper. At the outset, it will be readily acknowledged that no two installations can, or ever will be the same. At one extreme is the bucket line dredge where the distance between the ?mine? and the tailings area is measured in terms of tens of feet. At the other extreme, the large open pit copper mines are frequently spread across twenty, miles or so of countryside with the ore moving to the mill, as exemplified by the operations at Bingham Canyon, Ray, or Ruth - the "upstream" counterparts of Garfield, Hayden and McGill. In each of these cases, mill location was largely determined by requirements for tailings storage and/or water supply.

[This is the tenth in a series of retorts on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Unlike the bituminous part of the coal industry, the production of anthracite has been fairly well publicized; in fact until about 1845 whenever the coal industry of Pennsylvania was mentioned in papers, magazines or books, anthracite only was meant. Beginning with shipments by river in 1820 fairly complete records of shipments were published each year, and as this variety of coal was the only one used for domestic purposes east of the mountains and north of the Potomac, there was considerable interest in the producing fields on the part of the public. Transportation of anthracite was the cause of the building of the early canals in the state, and later, of some of the earliest railroads. In most publications it has been assumed that commencement of shipments in 1820 was the beginning of the industry; this is far from being so, and it is with the earlier developments this chapter will deal, leaving the later and better known records to existing publications. (See Table No. 53.) The first reference to coal in Pennsylvania by Gabriel Thomas in 1698 has already been mentioned,1 it could only have been anthracite in that section; although of course, he never saw any coal there. Little coal was used excepting by smiths for many years after that. In 1728 the Coventry Forge paid the expenses of a man "to town for Sea Coall and Steell for ye hammer;”2 in 1729 New Castle coal was sold in Philadelphia;3 in 1740 an advertisement mentioned, "very good Pitt and Sea Coal at 18 pence a bushel; at which price 'tis allowed to be cheaper Fewel for Hearth Fireing than Wood at the present Rates,"4 a view not shared by most of the people there for about eighty years; in 1752 Newcastle coal was again mentioned.5 There are no references to coal in the writings of any of the Moravian missionaries, although some who settled near Mauch Chunk in 1746 said that the Indians there made their pipe heads of a soft black stone, which was much more apt to have been slate than anthracite." This paper describes a series of small scale tests conducted to investigate the loading applied to a flat plate by the detonation of a cylindrical charge very close (between two and three charge radii from the center of the charge) to the structure. The testing used very small quantities of explosive (PETN): Two different series of tests were conducted. In the first test series, impulse loading on the target plate was investigated using three different sizes of charge. In the second series, pressure time profiles were determined. The charge size was 6 g or less. Impulse was found using high speed video of the target plate to determine its displacement as a function of time, from which initial plate velocity was obtained. Kolsky Bars, placed at the same distance from the charge as the target plate, were used to determine the free-field pressure time profile of the output of the charge at this distance. Two different types of target plates were used in the impulse study. One was just a plate while the other was a plate constrained with a steel frame.

The El Pe±on gold-silver deposit comprises four epithermal, low-sulfidation veins, which contain 2.9 million oz Au and 48 million oz Ag. Provisional data on alteration mineralogy, fluid inclusions, and vein textures constrain the chemistry and hydrology of the hydrothermal system responsible for ore mineralisation at El Pe±on. Alteration minerals include quartz, adularia, albite, illite, smectite, calcite, chlorite, and pyrite. Alteration minerals suggest the existence of near neutral pH, low salinity hydrothermal fluids, which circulated over an area greater than 18 km2. Complex mineral zonation patterns result from variations in host rock permeability and composition, overprinting alteration possibly produced by thermal waters from surficial and peripheral parts of the hydrothermal system, and supergene weathering in the hyperarid environment. "In Turkey, the growing demand for lignite has resulted in increased lignite production and an emphasis on improving underground recovery. This has resulted in a gradual increase in the application of the retreat longwall mining method and also in the extraction of the safety pillars protecting permanent underground structures (drifts, shafts) in mines prior to their abandonment.Extracting these safety pillars presents a special hazard to mine employees and the stability of the mine. Often subjected to high stresses, the behaviour of these pillars is not always predictable. Special care must be taken to ensure that infrastructure does not collapse prematurely, and that working conditions remain safe. Otherwise the extraction must be halted, and the remaining coal lost.This investigation reports on a study of the stability of safety pillars during the final extraction phase of the Hustas mine in Soma, Turkey.” The model construction was based on mine plans, and material properties were derived from physical properties testing. Observed subsidence effects from other mining events were used to calibrate the overburden lamination thickness.The model results compared well with surface physical disturbance occurring as a result of mining, as well as with conventional longwall stress redistribution theory and underground observations. The study has shown that properly calibrated models can be useful in assessing mine safety during remnant pillar extraction. The LAMODEL results demonstrate the convenience of this easy to use software."

This study focused on joint interpretation of the aeromagnetic and radiometric data to allocate and describe the structural elements and mineralization zones such as uranium, gold, and sulfide in the Gebel Umm Tineidba and its surroundings, Eastern Desert, Egypt. The study region is covered by exposures of Precambrian rocks such as gneisses, migmatites, ophiolitic mélange, metavolcanics, younger granites, and Quaternary sedimentary covers. The application of the total intensity magnetic and reduced-to-pole maps, power spectrum, analytic signal, tilt-angle, and local wavenumber maps helps in recognizing magnetic sources distribution, lineament features, and mineral zones delineation. The obtained results indicate that the depths of the deeper NE–SW, NNE–SSW, and N–S trending structures extend from 400 to 1750 m and shallower ones range from 100 to 400 m. Finally, the main trends of these structures affect the probable mineralization zones.

Steady-state simulation has proved to be a very useful aid in designing new plants and optimizing existing ones. The algorithms and data definitions of existing simulators often, however, require a great deal of expertise for implementing a simulation-based methodology. The constraints imposed by conventional simulators are explained and the advantages of a new algorithm, the Objective-Driven Simulation, are shown. These advantages are a) an improvement in the simulation results, which enables simplifications of the methodologies used, and b) the possibility of taking into account economic objectives for plant operation, thus extending the range of application of steady-state simulation.

Seventeen percent of US coal production now comes from the 19 surface coal mines in the Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming. The Powder River Coalfield, which coincides with this topographic and structural basin, is unique to the conterminous US, in that it contains an estimated 934.4 Gt (1.03 trillion st) of in-place coal resources. At least 13.2 Gt (14.6 billion st) is a compliant, strippable reserve base. In 1993, an estimated 162 Mt (179 million st), or 98% of the coal mined in this Wyoming coalfield, came from the thick - average 30.5 m (100 ft) - subbituminous, Wyodak coalbed, or from the Anderson and Canyon coals in the one mine where the Wyodak is split into two separate coalbeds. The other 2.7 Mt (3 million st) of coal mined in the Powder River Basin in 1993 came from the School, Badger, Monarch and Deitz No. 3 coalbeds. In this "world class" coalfield, there are at least 13 other persistent, 3 to 15 m (10 to 50 ft) thick, coalbeds as well as the Big George and Lake De Smet coalbeds, which are each 61 m (200 ft) or more thick in places. None of these latter 13 coals are mined at this time.

During the last 28 years, I have had the very challenging and rewarding experience of working as an engineering professional in a large multinational company, both as a manager of engineers and engineering projects as well as an inventor and generator of new engineering processes and products. Due to the diversified geographic and tech¬nical nature of my employer's business, my responsibilities have taken me all over the world. This has included interactions with people in different industries including minerals, coal, chemicals, petroleum, pulp and paper, agriculture and pharmaceuticals. As diverse as my experience may seem, it has always amazed me how common the basic underlying technology and economic trends are that shape the working environment that any given engineer in any given geographic loca¬tion will experience. I would like to discuss the industrial evolution from micro to macro engineering. One of the basic truths behind how industry must and will operate is "change," including: • the creation of conditions for change, • the anticipation of change, • the resistance to change, • the rewards that being part of a change can bring and • the destruction that change can bring to the unprepared. This fact was well stated by Heractitus around 500 BC.: "There is nothing permanent except change." This simple truth has been valid since the dawn of time and, if anything, is accelerating in nature every decade.

The solution mining of evaporites has a history of approximately 5,000 years. The insitu leaching of metalliferous ore will have many of the same characteristic problems which have confronted industry for years in the production of evaporite minerals. Basically we will be converting the less soluble forms of valuable metals into their more soluble salts and producing these in much the same manner as, for example, sodium chloride. There are a number of problems which we are faced with that are more complex and complicated and, therefore, will require a higher degree of sophistication than previously employed. One of our most important undertakings will be the clearcut definition of the problems involved. While a great deal of expertise can be drawn from the solution mining of evaporites and the oil industry, problems peculiar to the hydrometallurgical field will need to be solved. One of these is the introduction of permeability into an impermeable rock so as to expose the sought after values of metals which by volume are infinitesimal when compared with sodium chloride, potash or other type water soluble mineralization. After establishing this permeability which will be miniscule when compared to a solution cavity, there will be the maintenance of this permeability. In general, salt deposits are of a somewhat uniform chemical composition and thus their chemistry was relatively simple. Each metalliferous ore body is somewhat unique in its chemistry and will need to be treated accordingly.
