The history of the salt industry in West Virginia dates back nearly two hundred years; however, the history of salt as an important raw material for the chemical industry is much more recent. The earliest record of West Virginia salt was in 1753, when a raiding party of Shawnee Indians attacked frontier settlements in Virginia taking captive a number of the pioneers. One of these, who later escaped and returned to her friends, described how the Indians camped at a salt spring on the banks of the Kanawha River and evaporated the water to obtain a supply of salt to take back to Ohio with them. Settlement of the Kanawha Valley began in 1774, that same year the Battle of Point Pleasant ended the Indian's power in the Ohio Valley; and settlement of the Kanawha Valley progressed rapidly with a consequent increase in the importance of the Kanawha Licks as a source of salt. In those days the evaporation of the brine was a family matter for which the family wash-kettle was commandeered.

In this decade of the 1.970's it is forecast that eight billion cubic yards of rock will be excavated from 400, 000 miles of new tunnels, drifts and other underground workings in the western world, according to estimates in a report of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It is expected that the cost of this work will be in excess of $54 billion in constant 1970 dollars. Most of this underground excavation will be in mining -- 97% of the tunnel length and 89% of the volume - -the balance in construction. In addition to this huge excavating task, in the 18 developed nations of OECD, will be projects in the Communist Bloc and in the developing nations. Underground excavation requires the successful completion of three principle activities: A. Break -- to free rock from the solid work face. B. Remove-- to clear the work area of broken rock. C. Support -- to assure stability of rock surrounding the underground excavation and to eliminate risk of rock collapse. In today's fully mechanized excavation systems, continuous miners, roadheaders or tunnel borers, (A) break the rock loose from the face, and (B) remove broken rock with their mucking devices and load it onto belt conveyors, mine cars, trucks, or any other appropriate haulage system for disposal. Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have been exploring recent advances in the use of strain-softening constitutive laws that approximate shear fracturing. The purpose of these tests is to investigate shear-fracture-related rock bursts in hard-rock mines. The capabilities and remaining problems in the use of strain-softening laws in finite-element, distinct-element, and finite-difference methods are reviewed. Performance of the finite-difference implementation of strain softening is compared to classic experimental results and observations of rock mass behavior in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho. The results show promise for developing methods to identify the general location and orientation of shear fractures and their sequence of occurrence, but such methods cannot be relied upon to quantify post-fracture loads or displacements accurately. Uncertainty over the amount of energy consumed by failing rock and the dependency of energy consumption on model mesh definition prevent direct application of the results to analyses of rock bursts.

In compliance with the current Russian environmental legis­lation, possible impact of industrial activities on the environment is restricted by acceptable limiting values (maximal allowable concentrations - MAC) of individual chemical substances in the natural environment - water, atmospheric air and soils. These norms have federal status and are valid for the whole territory of Russia. Disposal of the substances, for which no MAC is estab­lished, is forbidden by the law. Many gold mining companies use cyanide in precious metal recovery. This paper overviews the Russian experience in pro­tection of natural water reservoirs from technogenic impact of cyanic technologies. Major toxic compounds, contained in liquid and solid rejects from hydrometallurgical treatment of gold ore using cyanidation, are cyanides (CN), thiocyanates (SCN) and cyanide metal com­plexes. Unlike western classification of various cyanide types, in Russia any inorganic cyanide compounds (simple and in com­plexes with metals), with the exception of iron cyanide com­plexes, are considered toxic and the acceptable limiting value is established for them. MAC is 0.05 mg/I for fish reservoirs and 0.1 mg/I for drinking water. For iron cyanide complexes MAC is 0.15 mg/I for fish reservoirs and 0.25 mg/I for drinking water. Russian norms for thiocyanates are practically as rigid - the acceptable limiting value for them in fish reservoirs is at the level of 0.07mg/l (0.15 mg/I for potassium thiocyanate) and for drinking water - O. lmg/1. Norms for metals are established on the basis of total content regardless of the form in which they are present in water - as cations or complex ions. It should be noted, that in case several toxic compounds of the same limiting value (for cyanides, thiocyanates and base metals the limiting value is toxicological) are present in water. Their allowable concentra­tion is calculated as the sum of actual concentration of each com­pound, divided by the corresponding acceptable limiting value, with the result not to exceed one (compounding effect). Differences in cyanide classification and the necessity to include thiocyanates dictate different analytical methods. This, in a number of cases, results in certain discrepancies in analytical results. Until recently chlorination was used as a basic process of detox­ification of wastewaters. Calcium hypochlorite powder or hypochlorite pulp, prepared of lime milk and chlorine shipped to the plant, were used as a reagent. Chlorination is an efficient method: it allows to completely destroy plain and complex cyanide, in addition to iron complexes, and thiocyanates. A good example of high efficiency chlorination can be found at the Mnogovershinniy mill near the Okhotsk Sea located in the salmon spawning area, for which we designed an automated chlorination plant for tailings dam. Since plant start-up ten years ago, the required concentrations of cyanides and thiocyanates have been kept at the MAC level required by environmental regulatory agen­cies and no harmful affects on ichthyofauna has been reported. One major drawback of chlorination is high cost of the major reagent, as well as secondary contamination of detoxified waters by chlorides. Secondary contamination by chlorides becomes obvious in the course of detoxification of wastewaters of com­plex composition, which require increased reagent consumption. Recent changes in economic conditions in Russia caused the necessity to direct efforts to reduce the costs of precious metals recovery, and in particular, wastewater treatment. We have con­ducted certain work in this direction and obtained positive results. We hope that our experience described below will be of interest to other specialists particularly taking into account the current low gold prices.

"Geo-sensing is the ability to routinely measure or infer rock properties at a range of scales using non-destructive scanning devices. These devices can provide information and data flows to support integrated decision making across the minerals value chain. Geo-sensing has been used for many years in minerals exploration using technologies such as satellite imaging and airborne geophysics but to date the use of sensing technologies in between the mine and mill has been very limited. The aim of this research is to develop new mineral sensing technologies that can enable grade engineered ore streams through the rejection of low value gangue or deleterious elements either in the pit or during transfer to the mill. This paper focusses on the research and development being carried out by the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE) and its associated members on new sensing technologies. At the start of their development these technologies were classified on the Technology Readiness Level scale at 3 (TRL3), equivalent to a proof of concept. Laboratory testing and design is aimed at progressing these sensing technologies to TRL5 which is ready for testing at an end users site. New data obtained during the laboratory testing and design phases are presented in the paper demonstrating performance specifications such as detection limits and measurement speed which can be used to infer the pod size of gangue that can be rejected at scale. Grade Engineering® and coarse gangue rejection are considered as key drivers for the mining industry to address the higher mining, processing and environmental costs associated with ore bodies with declining grades. This is an industry wide problem and the development of mineral sensors is seen as key enabling technologies for Grade Engineering® and coarse gangue rejection. The technologies presented in this paper enhance value through early decision making of ore quality and improve the overall resource value case through improved grade and throughput engineering."

"Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) used as catalyst which reduces toxic substances in emission gas exhausted from an automobile should extensively be recycled because they are rare metals produced only at the limited regions. The recycling process is to smelt an alumina honeycomb, in which PGM is built, in molten iron with flux such as lime and silica to separate them. PGMs are concentrated in molten iron while alumina in slag.The objective of this study is to understand the factor to concentrate PGMs in liquid iron as much as possible. Fundamental research of the distribution of the PGMs between the slag and liquid iron was carried out to recover the value metals of platinum, palladium and rhodium from the three-way auto catalyst. The distribution ratios of platinum, palladium and rhodium between the Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 slag and liquid iron are from 10-6 to 10-5, and these are concentrated in comparison with slag phase by about 1 million times to the liquid iron at 1873 K. The distribution ratios of platinum between the FexO-CaO-SiO2 slag and liquid iron decrease from 0.1 to 2?10-4 with increasing the CaO content in the slag. The CaO addition to the FexO unary slag is effective in concentrating platinum in molten iron.Based on the distribution ratios obtained in this work, recovery of PGMs was determined. The recovery of platinum, palladium and rhodium increase with increasing the mass ratio, Mmetal/Mslag. In the case of the conditions of Mmetal/Mslag = 0.04, the recoveries of PGMs showed more than 99.97%. The use of liquid iron and carbon saturated liquid iron as the collector metal is advantageous for the PGM recycling of the three-way auto catalyst. We found that PGMs are enriched to the molten iron or the carbon saturated iron and the slag loss of PGMs is negligible small."

The Port of New York and New Jersey is one of the most heavily used transportation arteries in the world, handling nearly 40 per-cent of the North Atlantic shipping trade and directly providing nearly 230,000 jobs to the local economy. In 2004, $100 billion worth of consumer goods moved through the port. To accommodate future cargo volumes in the port, which are expected to double over the next decade and possibly quadruple in 40 years, deeper shipping channels are needed to provide access for a new generation of cargo mega-ships with drafts exceeding 13.7-m (45-ft) when loaded. Current channels within the harbor range in depths up to 13.7-m (45-ft), thus preventing carriers from using these larger ships, or requiring significant reductions in cargo to achieve lesser drafts to operate safely within the harbor. As part of the Harbor Deepening Project, the Anchor-age Channel would be deepened to 15.2 m (50 ft) below mean low water (MLW), for a length of 5,790 m (19,000 ft). The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) owns, operates and maintains two existing water siphons in the harbor. Due to their shallow depth, both existing siphons must be relocated before dredging of the Anchorage Channel can be completed. Tom Costanzo, manager of capital programs for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), says that ?While the re-location of the existing siphons under the Anchorage Channel is vital to the success of the deepening program, it is also a story of cooperation among key agencies at different levels of government resulting in improvements that will benefit the people of this region greatly.?

The use of concentrated solar flux for high temperature metallurgical applications is a wellresearched area with several reported literatures on solar calcination and metal oxide reduction. This paper presents two such processes with potential to reduce the carbon footprint from ironmaking through using concentrated solar flux. The first process involves solar flux incorporation to the recently developed lime-magnetite pellet (LMP) route of magnetite ore agglomeration. The second process is a hybrid solar-smelting route for iron ore-coal composite pellets that utilises solar flux to provide process heat. Both the concepts of solar agglomeration and solar smelting process were investigated using a solar simulator-hybrid reactor set-up at Swinburne University of Technology. Results from solar agglomeration experiments at 950°C suggested no change in the reaction mechanism of the LMPs under solar irradiation compared to electrical heating. The percentage and morphology of the primary phases (mainly CaFe3O5) appeared similar for both solar and electric heated LMPs. The solar-smelting of magnetite concentrate-lignite coal composite pellets at 1130°C showed a maximum metallisation of 55 per cent after 1.5 hrs of reaction. The solar-smelt process has about 25 to 35 per cent lower CO2 emission compared to the blast furnace ironmaking. Technoeconomic analysis of implementing a CST facility in an existing composite pellet process suggested a payback period of about ten years at a heliostat cost of $A100/m2 and natural gas cost of A$10/GJ. The economics of CST implementation can be further enhanced by decreasing the thermal losses from the heliostat field and reactor.

INTRODUCTION This is the first in a series of papers addressing practical tunnel lining design. The format for this and future papers is to present a particular topic and support the presentation of the guidelines by the practical application of a case history. The primary intent is to provide guidelines for the geotechnical and structural design of tunnels where the tunnel size and/or ground conditions dictates that systematic support of the excavation is required following each increment of excavation. This method of tunneling is commonly referred to as Sequential Excavation and Support(SES) and is also commonly termed the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) The authors developed the design guidelines from experience gained over the past two decades during the design and construction of several major railway, highway and water-transfer tunnel projects in Africa and Asia. During this time it has been possible to compare the performance of the as-constructed structures to the predicted performance as given by the design process. Excavation was typically carried out in widely varying ground conditions (weak-bedded rock, jointed hard rock, and soil-like poorly cemented rock with groundwater). It is therefore intended that the design guidelines could be applied, in general terms at least, to any tunnel excavated in any ground mass condition with any ground material type (hard rock, soft rock, bedded rock, soft ground, and soil) with or without ground water. This first paper is an introductory paper that defines the scope and a brief outline of the design issues that may be presented in detail in later papers. What is design? It may be thought of as any rational/verifiable/justifiable process whereby a concept is transformed into information that can be used to bring the concept to reality. In the case of a civil structure, design may be defined as that process, which is documented and can be audited, that determines information such as the shape (form) of the structure, the dimensions (size) of the structure, the thickness and strength of structural members that comprise the structure, etc. This information can be used to compute the time, money and resources required for

THE patent system, through which an inventor is given exclusive right to his invention for a limited period as a reward for his industry and in reimbursement of his expenditures, originated in England in the famous "Statute of Monopolies," enacted in 1623. The first patent granted in America was to Samuel Winslow, in Massachusetts, in 1641. The basis of the patent system of the United States is a provision in the Constitution giving Congress the power to secure to inventors for a limited time the exclusive use of their discoveries. The first legislative enactment was the law of 1790, which was placed on the statute book after Washington had addressed Congress in its favor. Under this law, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of War, and the Attorney General constituted the board for the examination of patent applications and the granting of patents. The first Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson, became the first administrator of the patent sys- tem in this country. He personally examined every application filed during his term of office.

Over the past 20 years, pressure die casting has evolved to a point where structural parts can now be produced by this process. This has been made possible by the development of vacuum die casting and by the development of die-castable, low iron content alloys. This resulted in the production of low porosity, weldable die-cast parts on which heat treatment may be applied. In the present paper, the influence porosities on the tensile properties of as-cast A360 tensile test bars was evaluated. This was done by casting 24 clusters, comprising three 6mm diameter test bars each, in a 280T cold chamber pressure die casting machine after a steady dynamic equilibrium had been reached. Modeling of filling allowed to explain the differences in porosity observed in the 3 samples of a same cluster while the results of solidification modeling were related to the microstructure. Tensile samples were radiographed on a real time X-cube apparatus and separated into 2 lots: samples where no porosity defect were visible and samples with visible defects. By measuring the tensile properties of the 2 lots it was possible to quantify the drop in tensile properties brought about by porosity, which is the most common defect observed in pressure die-cast parts.

This document discusses commercial strategies and applications of specialty processing plants for the recycling of nickel, copper, zinc and cobalt bearing by-products. For this discussion, I will focus on materials originating from the metal plating, electronic circuit board· and chemical industries. The review of select processes and the required service, sourcing, material handling, processing and marketing strategies necessary for a successful recycling program are highlighted. Materials discussed in this summary include filtercakes, filters, dusts, spent catalysts, spent solutions and solids. Both pyrometallurgical and hyrometallurgical applications to these materials are addressed. A comparison of targeted finished markets, including smelter feeds and value added products are also reviewed.

There are several ways in which to classify refractories. The most suitable one is based on their general composition or raw material content. The categories are: 1. Aluminosilicate brick which include the fire clays and alumina and high alumina raw materials. 2. Basic brick which includes magnesia and chrome ore alone and in various combinations. 3. Silica brick which uses gannister or high purity gravels and sands. 4. Insulating brick are generally of the aluminosilicate type but may be most all refractory raw materials. 5. Special refractories are made from raw materials of zircon, zirconia, ultra high alumina, silicon carbide, fusion cast products, chromic oxide, carbon and graphite. The raw materials that make up these different categories are what we are briefly going to consider. Emphasis is placed more on the most important raw materials.

The existing Central City Tunnel was built primarily in the 1930s with a small portion as old as the 1880s. It conveys stormwater in downtown Minneapolis. It is a 4,400-ft long tunnel located 80 feet underground. The Central City Tunnel has experienced surcharging and surface overflows during heavy rainfall events. This paper presents the details of tunnel and shaft design for the new Central City Parallel Tunnel to mitigate the overflows. The design considered hydraulics and geotechnical engineering for the structural geologic conditions including the weak Saint Peter Sandstone and overlying strong Platteville Limestone. Ground conditions resulted in tunnel designs including large flat-back box tunnels and unique cathedral-shaped tunnel sections.

"To provide an indication of expected performance of the mine and mill, feasibility studies should include an assessment of the expected day-to-day variability in process plant feed. Attempts to do this based on conventional resource models will be flawed as such studies fail to consider and account for the in-built smoothing (averaging) of input data.This can lead to one of two situations: an expensive, over-engineered process plant that can cope with every possible situation, or operational strategies that fail to manage the natural variability within the orebody and the impact of day-to-day operational decision-making.In both cases the value of the project diminishes through excessive capital costs or reduced throughput or recovery during operations.Unlike conventional estimation techniques, the geostatistical method of conditional simulation can reproduce the inherent variability of the deposit. Once a valid model has been developed, it is possible to analyse the model using a transfer function that simulates the proposed mining processes and provides a representation of the likely variation of mill feed characteristics at any time scale.The case study demonstrates how the proposed mining strategy would result in mill feed being considerably more variable than expected, resulting in poor recovery, low throughput and potential breaches of environmental conditions. Mitigation measures included budgeting for additional mining equipment to enable greater flexibility during mining and revised stockpiling and crusher feed strategies.Awareness of the benefits of modelling the variability of geometallurgical parameters will increase the use of this approach in producing more realistic financial models of expected mine performance at the design stage.CITATION:Shaw, W J, Khosrowshahi, S and Weeks, A, 2013. Scope for Thermal Recovery in Shell's Heavy Oil Fields in Venezuela The main heavy oil reservoirs on the East coast of Lake Maracaibo (Fig. I), known as "Bolivar Coast", initially contained some 20 billion bbl of oil in place with gravities in the range of 10 to 15° API. The current total production rate is about 400,000 B/D. Since the recovery to date is on an average only 12.5 percent of the initial oil in place, these fields offer a vast potential for secondary recovery methods. The reservoirs are characterized by moderate depth (generally 1,000 to 3,000 ft; maximum 5,000 ft), good formation properties such as net oil sand thickness (50 to 300 ft), high porosity (30 to 40 percent) permeability (1 to 3 darcies) and oil saturation (initially about 80 percent) and high oil viscosity (100 to 10,000 cp in situ), all of which are favorable for the application of thermal recovery processes. Since 1957, steam drive, steam "soak" and underground combustion have been tested or are being tested in this area.1-3 This paper deals with a major steam drive test in the Tia Juana field. The test was commenced in Sept., 1961, on the basis of encouraging results of laboratory experiments and pilot field tests, which will be discussed briefly. Early Laboratory Investigation of the Steam Drive Process In 1956 a series of model experiments was carried out in the Koninklijke/Shell Laboratorium, Amster- dam, to investigate the displacement of heavy oil by steam.' The prototype studied was a horizontal, un-consolidated heavy oil reservoir, subjected to a linear steam drive. The model, representing a slab from this reservoir along the main flow direction, consisted of a steel tube filled with oil-saturated sand, provided with layers of rock at the top and bottom to simulate conductive heat losses to cap and base rock. Lateral heat losses, perpendicular to the main flow direction, were minimized by insulating the sides of the model. Heat flow and viscosity and gravity forces were scaled by taking the steam injection rate and sand permeability inversely proportional to the geometric reduction factor of the model, and using materials (oil, steam, cap rock, etc.) identical with those of the prototype. The main feature of the process was a frontal displacement mechanism that was observed within wide ranges of injection pressure and rate, oil viscosity, initial oil saturation and sand permeability. The high stability of this front can be attributed to the high volumetric steam flow rates, combined with the reduction in oil viscosity. High recoveries were obtained due to the low residual oil saturation of about 15 percent in the zone swept by steam. The latter value pertains to the specific test conditions (heavy oil, uncon-solidated sand) and may be lower for light oil, due to the effects of steam distillation. A conductivity cell, developed previously, was employed in an effort to investigate the inter-relation between electrical conductivity and acidity of sulphuric acid - metal sulphate solutions at high temperatures. The measured solutions include the H2SO4-H2O, MgSO4-H2O, H2SO4-MgSO4-H2O, H2SO4-MgSO4-Al2(SO4)3-H2O solutions. All solutions reported in this paper were measured from 15 to 250 °C at equilibrium vapour pressure. The maximum measured concentrations of H2SO4, MgSO4 and Al2(SO4)3 were 0.45 m, 0.30 m and 0.10 m, respectively. It was found that, from 15 to 250°C, there is a linear relationship between H2SO4 concentration and electrical conductivities for acid concentration up to 0.45 m. At 250 °C and constant H2SO4 concentration, the solution conductivity drops with the increase of MgSO4 concentration. Lt is suggested that this drop is caused by a decrease in the concentration of H. Finally, an empirical model was developed based on the available measurements. This model has been tested against real laterite leach solutions where sulphuric acid and metal sulphates are dominant electrolytes. The average difference between the estimate acid concentration from this model and the one from titration was less than 5%.
