The Bolivar Cu-Zn skarn deposit in the Piedras Verdes mining district of Chihuahua is one of many base and precious metal deposits in the north-northwest trending Sierra Madre Belt extending across the states of Chihuahua, Durango and Sonora in northwestern Mexico. The information presented here is drawn from two papers on the Bolivar property1,4 plus new information. Historical mining and exploration for polymetallic Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag-Au deposits in the Sierra Madre Belt dates to Spanish Colonial days. Access to the Bolivar Property (Figure 1) is by paved road (approximately 305 km southwest from Chihuahua) and approximately 80 km by all-season gravel roads to the villages of Cieneguita (population ~1,000) and Piedras Verdes (population ~500) adjacent to the property. [ ] The Bolivar property comprises an old Cu-Zn producer (the Bolivar Mine), exploration concessions adjacent to the Bolivar Mine, and a new camp at the mine that supports mining, exploration and maintenance. From 1980 to 2000, former operators extracted approximately 300,000 tonnes of ore that was hand sorted to an average grade of 5-6% Cu and 25-30% Zn. From 2005-2010, Dia Bras produced from the mine just over 600,000 tonnes at an average grade of 1.7% Cu and 8.6% Zn. Dia Bras transported mineralized rock 275 km by truck and rail to its Malpaso mill, located about 30 km west of Cuauhtémoc in central Chihuahua, from 2005 until October 2011 when the new Piedras Verde mill was commissioned only 5 km from the mine. (Note: the Company cannot use the term ?ore? because it has never completed a feasibility study.)

Recruiting and retaining students in the explosives industry is becoming increasingly important each year. With no undergraduate degree in explosives engineering currently available in the United States, it is from other industries and degree disciplines we must recruit. The 2014 annual ISEE conference saw the first anonymous online survey distributed to members of SEE student chapters of the International Society of Explosives Engineers. The survey contained questions about future job and career plans, ideal job placement, expectations of salary and current academic degrees. The purpose of the survey was to determine what these students expect or require from a career in the explosives industry, and their current path to pursue this. This information can help steer recruitment activities and job offers for graduating students. The success for both student response rates and interest from the industry has allowed space for a yearly update of this survey. A second survey was distributed in 2015 and included international students. This paper provides the data from a third online survey distributed to all student members of the International Society of Explosives Engineers, globally. Understanding the main incentives for a student to accept a graduate position as an explosives engineer can help us, as an industry; position ourselves to remain competitive in recruiting against other major degree disciplines.

PRODUCERS of both bituminous and anthracite coal have for many years been worrying about the gradually decreasing consumption of their product in the United States. Twenty years ago production had climbed to a peak of 569,000,000 tons of bituminous and around 90,000,000 tons of anthracite. In 1939 it was about 393,000,000 tons of bituminous and 51,000,000 tons of anthracite. This does not mean that the country is using less polver than it did twenty years ago, or that we are living in colder buildings. As a matter of fact, about three times as much electric power is now being consumed as in 1920. In general two factors are responsible for the drop in coal consumption: (1) greater efficiency in the use of coal, and (2) increased competition from hydro power, internal-combustion engines, and substitution of oil and gas for coal in conventional furnaces. As to the first factor, it took 3 Ib. of coal to generate a kilowatt-hour of electricity in central stations in 1920 and it takes 1.4 Ib. now; it took about 175 Ib. of coal in railroad locomotives to haul 1000 long tons a mile in 1920 where it talces about 120 lb. now: and marked economies have also been made in the use of coal in steel plants: in by-product coke ovens, and in other large uses. As to the second factor, three times as much electricity is produced from water power now as was produced in 1920; three times as much oil is being consumed in various ways; and likewise, the consumption of natural gas has tripled- whereas coal consumption in the same period has dropped by 40 per cent

The evaluation of mining projects requires a methodology that will give flexibility and manage the existing uncertainty within the projects. The discount cash flow (DCF) and other traditional evaluation approaches, which are widely used in evaluating a significant number of mining projects, have simply assumed that the main variables remain constant in their evaluation; elements such as discounted rate, mine life, operating cost and production rate. The DCF ignores managementÆs flexibility to adapt and reforecast and revise decisions. Real options valuation (ROV) is one of the modern evaluation methodologies that provide a tool to adapt and revise mining projects under uncertainty and future variables movements. ROV brings more variables into the evaluation model compared to DCF and assumes them as uncertain and dependent. Finally, ROV provides a range of solutions that can assist in managing this flexibility.This paper endeavours to compare ROV and DCF for mining projects comprehensively and applies these two techniques in the model. The paper shows that ROV will be inclusive of extra value in mining projects due to variables not allowed for, or even ignored, when the DCF model alone is used. One of the significant advantages of the ROV method is being able to evaluate mining projects under different scenarios from the inception of the projects. Furthermore, ROV gives the ability to evaluate the mining project while allowing for abandonment, temporary suspension, or expanding the mining project. In other words, the ROV evaluation process creates an analytical environment, which allows for optimisation of the mining plan within the mining project, as well as the ability to change the capital structure dependant on existing circumstances over the life of the project. The ROV is a new evaluation method that can add value in mining project analysis and offers opportunities to amplify gains, or to mitigate losses. Wire rope, when used for hoisting on a mine is one of the most vulnerable units in the most expensive group of installations on the mine. With the introduction of hoisting on the Koepe sheave, a new technique was established. This innovation brought with it certain advantages which long had been recognized and which are being developed further.A need exists for the development of an infallible non-destructive testing device for wire ropes and it is axiomatic that the development and application of such a device should be coupled with the physical examination of mine hoisting systems. Therefore an integrated type of research programme is necessary in order to correlate the effect of shock loading with rope damage, which may be detected ultimately bynon-destructive means. This paper reviews certain historical aspects of investigations on this topic and it outlines a policy for research which can cope with a.c. or d.c. methods of excitation of the rope.INTRODUCTIONThe importance of wire rope in mining operations is often not fully recognized. Very few records seem to have been kept as to the cost of such work, and although it is difficult for this reason, to set a fair price for breaking up and handling boulders of various sizes, yet the cost of this detail work enters very materially into the cost of solid rock excavation. This is not a conventional professional paper. It deals mostly with personal experiences. These concern a background in applied mineralogy. Your committee asked me to do this. I accepted with a California enthusiasm which has since diminished with the approach of a Chicago winter. Nevertheless, I wish to thank your committee and also to apologize in advance for omissions and inadequate statements, as such a paper must possess. My introduction to applied mineralogy took place in 1922 at Stanford University. Physicists had recently demonstrated that crystalline powders would reflect x-rays in a systematic manner. Professor A.F. Rogers sug¬gested that significant x-ray reflections might be obtained from powdered opaque minerals. With the aid of Professor D.L. Webster in the Physics Department, I constructed an x-ray diffraction outfit. It was a crude affair, but it worked. Starting with 1924, we secured recognizable patterns of a goodly number of ore minerals (1,2,3). Today x-ray diffraction outfits are common, and a card system of mineral identification is constantly used.

Australia is not capitalizing on the raw gems and precious minerals that it produces in abundance. In particular, there is an unrealised value for diamonds due to lack of processing after mining. Australia could enhance the value of its raw jewellery products by developing and integrated jewellery industry. For instance, initiation of a diamond industry would require training programmes to educate people in the requisite skills, such as diamond sorting, cleaving, sawing, bruting and polishing. Equally important would be the training of people in design jewellery, manufacturing, and appropriate diamond grading and sales techniques. Future technological advances in diamond processing will decide where the major diamond processing centres of the world will be. Australia, for a relatively small investment, could develop a highly productive diamond processing capacity using the new technology available. Australia's geographical position, and advanced banking and communication facilities provide the potential for this country to become a major trading centre for diamonds. The present computerized mine planning systems use CAD-like and Data Base Management System (DBMS) environments for the handling of numerical, textural, and graphical data. These two environments are usually integrated, that the data provided by the DBMS are linked to any graphical element rendered by the CAD system. The subsidence monitoring, analysis and prediction process should be integrated with the mine design process. It should allow for the assessment of impacts of mining on surface, surface utilities, and structures. It should also provide for the measures to control mining, that will create only acceptable levels of negative impacts on the surface. The common data base, and graphical capabilities of the CAD interface, may be used with great advantage for both systems. The findings of the subsidence engineering modulus should be directly incorporated into the mine design system, and vice versa. In this paper the author suggests guidelines for the development of the comprehensive computer system, able not only to predict the vertical and horizontal components of the ground movement, but also assess the induced surface damages, and costs related to subsidence prevention and compensation.

"The El Indio roasting facility associated with El Indio Mine in Central Chile has operated since 1981. It is a facility developed to remove arsenic and antimony from gold bearing enargite/pyrite flotation concentrates.The three installed roasters are Nichols Herreschoff units each with 14 hearths and measuring 4.85 metres diameter. Hearths are rabbled by central shaft driven rabble arms. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is not just a catch-cry. It is an essential component of every-day life in many professions, including accountancy, law and public administration. Without realising it, many other professions are undertaking CPD activities in an un-structured way, including mining, metallurgy and geology. Examples include Annual and technical conferences of The Institute, Branch-level technical meetings and in-company training and development programmes and technical exchanges. Whilst approaches to date have undoubtedly helped keep the Australian mining industry at the forefront of mining technology, one cannot presume that technological development will stand still. To meet this challenge, human resource development must keep pace, not only to optimize utilization of technological developments, but more importantly to develop firm bases from which new products, processes and technologies can be developed within Australia.

A wastewater treatment plant commissioned in 1978 is undergoing a major expansion. Planning various phases of the 8-hectare expansion at this site requires an understanding of the site response during and after construction, and the potential impact on adjacent properties and infrastructure. The expansion project requires nominally 5 m of site grading fill for flood protection. The site is underlain by loose to compact fine sand over firm to very stiff clay stratum that extends to great depths. Ground improvement is required to mitigate the liquefaction hazard in the fine sand stratum, and preloading is proposed to reduce post- construction settlements in the deep clay. Site development and foundation systems for the plant expansion project were evaluated by conducting settlement analyses which accounted for the historic and future site loading and 3-D modeling of soil layers with interpolation between borehole and cone penetration test (CPT) locations. The numerical model was calibrated to match short-term and long-term settlements measured at the plant site. The analyses were carried out to assess the effects of past loading, proposed preload and surcharge heights, lateral extents and durations as well as vibro-replacement ground improvement on post-construction settlements. Two design options were considered for the preload footprint across the site and foundation system for proposed facilities. It is shown that limiting the preload extent and founding some of the proposed structures on deep friction piles reduce the predicted settlements of adjacent infrastructure and result in reasonable performance for the proposed facilities. INTRODUCTION A wastewater treatment plant commissioned in 1978 will be replaced with a new plant on an undeveloped portion of the site to provide wastewater treatment for an expanded service area. The existing facilities must remain in operation until completion of the new plant. The site grade will be raised nominally 5 m for flood protection. The large areal extent of the site grading fill and plant structures will cause stress changes extending to great depths in the underlying soils and result in settlement of the existing and new structures. Historic settlement of the existing facilities has been tolerable for plant operations, but no settlement performance data was recorded during site development and post-construction from 1978 to 2007. Development of the 8-hectare expansion at this site is planned in three phases to reduce the overall construction schedule. Planning for each phase requires evaluating the effects of various site development activities from start to completion of expansion and during the design life (i.e. post-construction period), and the potential impact on existing wastewater treatment facilities and adjacent properties and infrastructure including an adjacent viaduct structure. Figure 1 presents the site plan and three distinct site development phases considered for the plant expansion.

Recovery of Precious Metals from Chloride Solution by Magnetite The development of environmental-friendly lixiviants as alternatives to cyanide and the increasing recycling activities to recover precious metals from waste materials have prompted researchers to find efficient methods and alternative sorbents to recover precious metals, such as Au and Pt, from aqueous solutions. This study explored the use of magnetite (Fe3O4) as a sorbent to recover Au and Pt from chloride solutions. Magnetite is a semiconductor and has the capability of transferring electrons both within the solid state and across the solid-liquid interface and has the ability to reduce metal species on its surface. The sorption of AuCl4- and PtCl62- from NaCl solution on commercial grade magnetite powder was investigated by batch-sorption experiments. The effects of pH, contact time, NaCl concentration and precious metal concentration on the recovery were studied. Sorption experiments revealed that magnetite exhibited selectivity towards other metals with the strongest affinity for Au. Both Au and Pt recoveries showed similar pH dependence curves, with peaks at pH 6 - 7. At this pH range, a maximum of 4.4 ¦mol Au/g Fe3O4 and 3.0 ¦mol Pt/g Fe3O4 were recovered after 24 h at an initial metal concentration of 0.05 mol/m3. Increasing the initial precious metal concentration increased the Au and Pt uptake amount by magnetite. It was also observed that the recovery decreased with high NaCl concentrations. The SEM images of the magnetite particles after the treatment showed that gold, which was confirmed by the EDX analysis, agglomerated and were deposited on Fe3O4 surface.

Discussion of the paper of A. P. WATT, presented at the St. Louis meeting, October, 1917, and printed in Bulletin No. 130, October, 1917, pp. 1476 to 1563. THE CHAIRMAN (0. M. _BILHARZ, Miami, Okla.).-Mr. Watt's reference to sorting or hand-picking of the ore in the lead district, which is being introduced at Mine La Motte, is especially interesting. I believe, from my former experience in the district, that hand-picking should be practised to some extent by all the companies in the Lead Belt. I know that a great many thousand tons containing only very small amounts of lead are passed through the mills, which, of course, is not to the advantage of milling machinery. That procedure may be Warranted at times of high prices, but I think that hand-picking should ordinarily be adopted to some extent: ERNEST GAYFORD, Salt Lake City, Utah.-On page 1525, speaking of the settling of slime previous to treatment either on slime tables or by flotation, Mr. Watt states: "The settling area allowed per ton of dry slime varies from 11 to 16 sq. ft.-an average for the district would be about 13 sq. ft. of settling area per ton of dry slime. This figure applies when the, discharge contains 20 per cent. solids." Mr. Ramsey, of the Dorr company, is here and I would like to ask him whether a settling area of 13 sq. ft. per ton of dry slime per 24 hr. is not considerably above the average area of Dorr settling tanks, and whether 20 per cent. solids is not above the general dilution for that' capacity? I should also like to know what is the general average on slimes of that character. E. R. RAMSEY, Denver, Colo.-An allowance of 13 sq. ft. per ton does seem rather large. I am not familiar with the settling characteristics of the dolomitic gangue, but as an average over the country, I should say that 6 or 7 sq. ft. would be nearer correct for discharge at that consistency. DELANO, Bowie Terre, Mo.-We have had an opportunity to try our tanks at the highest capacity, and-find that by thickening the slime to 30 per cent. solids we average 12 sq. ft. per ton of dry slime. ERNEST GAYFORD.-DO you find any definite ratio between the thickness of the discharge and the settling capacity of the tank? Do you consider that the tank has a larger capacity if the discharge is 3 to 1 than if it is 50 per cent. solids? L. A. DELANO.-I think it has greater capacity with the thinner discharge. It depends a good deal on the density of feed to the tanks; in our case the feed contains 2.5 per cent. solids.

Automated scanning electron microscopy has been widely used in recent years for gold and other precious metals characterization. However, application of this technology is resource intensive and in most instances needs specialized technical personnel to process the samples and information. Newmont Metallurgical Services (NMS) has recently acquired an ASPEX SEM. The ASPEX SEM offers some significant benefits/improvements in sample preparation and sample processing time. NMS and ASPEX have been working together to develop an approach utilizing this technology for the minerals processing industry and specifically for gold characterization.

The apparatus described was developed for determining the kinetics of gas - solid reactions at high temperatures by measuring the volume of gas consumed with respect to time . This apparatus consists essentially of a horizontal precision- bore glass tube connecting a small reaction chamber in a furnace to a large constant - temperature reservoir . A drop of mercury in the tube separates the two sides of the system and serves as an indicator that moves at a speed proportional to the rate of gas consumption . The sensitivity of the apparatus depends inversely on both the density of the gas in the system and the cross - sectional area of the tube ; with a tube having an area of 0.079 cm² , the sensitivity for oxygen at 308 ° K and 0.5 atm is 20 cm/mg . The reproducibility of data with the volumetric apparatus is good .

The room-and-pillar mining method is used extensively in underground limestone mines in the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. The rock mass is typically a near-horizontal, bedded deposit at relatively shallow depth. A survey of 34 mines was conducted in which data on roof spans, rock mass properties and support practices were collected as part of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health research project into ground control in limestone mines. The average room width is 13.5 m (44 ft), accommodating large mechanized equipment. The results show that the immediate roof beam can consist of many individual layers and can contain several near-vertical joints. In spite of the room widths, the roof is naturally stable in many mines. Observed roof instabilities can generally be related to excessive horizontal stresses or unfavorable geological structures that cause block fallout or beam failure of the bedded roof rocks. The survey showed that the rock mass quality of the limestone does not vary significantly throughout the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. Roof conditions and the need for support were found to be closely related to the thickness and competence of the first layer of limestone in the roof. The findings highlight the need to identify local geological structures and the roof beam characteristics so that support alternatives can be evaluated. Monitoring and observational technologies that are available for identifying potentially unstable roof are presented, which include: roof characterization using the Rock Fall Risk Index, automated logging of roofbolt hole drilling, microseismic monitoring and displacement monitoring.
