"Morphology is a tool that is rarely used for mineral breakage mechanism evaluation. Ground particles are typically assessed for their size distribution. They are also visually analyzed using image analysis. However, image analysis is not a comprehensive evaluation of the particle surface texture. It evaluates particle’s size parameters such as area, diameter, and perimeter amongst other features. On the other hand, morphology analysis takes the particle assessment to another level of detail. Morphology analysis evaluates particles’ roundness, elongation and angularity that would indicate the degree of roughness of the particle. According to Roufail and Klein (2009), rougher surfaces are generated due to breakage along grain boundaries – intergranular breakage. Mill operation, particularly mill speed, dictates the dynamics in the mill. Stirred mills are known to break the particles via abrasion under standard operation. However, if the dynamics of the grinding media in the mill are changed, the particles could be more exposed to impact and compression loading that would lead to a different mode of breakage.In this paper, the effect of material properties and mill operating conditions on particle morphology will be studied. Hard non-sulfide versus soft sulfide minerals are compared, namely quartz and galena, respectively. Extreme mill speeds are tested covering the range of 1000 to 2000 rpm for a 4-litre Netzsch (ISA) mill. In addition to particle size distribution, micro-analysis is executed in the form of morphological analysis using a tested manual roughness point counting technique.INTRODUCTIONGrinding in general and stirred milling in particular are processes that are used to break particles to liberate metal-bearing minerals for further separation downstream. The energy required to achieve the target particle size versus maximum possible liberation has been studied intensively and it is usually the breaking point for the grinding system chosen in a process flowsheet. Operating conditions are dictated by the energy consumption. Becker et al. (2001) related different forms of energy such as input, specific, volume/mass specific energies to stress intensities and final product fineness. Other research studies focused on energy input in a stirred mill (Zheng, Harris and Somasundaran, 1996)."

"A continuum mixture model of the direct chill casting process is used to model the transport phenomena and solidification behavior in the Direct Chill casting of an Al - 6 wt% Cu billet using Wagstaffs AirslipTM process. The model, which includes the transport of free-floating solid particles, can simulate the effect of a grain refiner on macrosegregation and fluid flow. Numerical predictions of sump profiles and composition and temperature fields are presented. Two 45 cm diameter billets were cast under production conditions with and without grain refiner. Temperature and composition measurements and sump profiles are compared to the numerical results. The comparison shows excellent agreement for the grain refined case. It is believed that an incorrect model assumption prevents good agreement in the non-grain refined billet. IntroductionDirect chill casting is a semi-continuous process in which molten aluminum enters the top of a water-cooled mold, is cooled, and forms a solid ingot drawn out below (Figure l(b)). The molten aluminum begins to solidify due to the cooling effect of the mold wall. As the ingot is withdrawn from the bottom of the mold, water jets impinge on the surface, directly cooling the billet and forming a solid layer around a liquid melt, commonly referred to as the sump.A particular defect that occurs in a wide range of casting processes, including the direct chill (DC) casting of aluminum alloys, is macrosegregation, the uncontrolled redistribution of alloying elements on the scale of the ingot during solidification. Macrosegregation in DC cast ingots can produce non-uniform mechanical properties [l], which affects the behavior of the metal during downstream forming and heat treat operations."

"In copper percolation-leaching plants the ore is usually crushed to a maximum size of about three-eighths inch. Ordinarily an ore is crushed as finely as feasible since the rate of extraction of copper is increased with decreasing size of particles owing to the greater surface exposed and. the shorter path required for solutions to come into contact with the minerals to be dissolved. However, greater degree of crushing also increases the amount of fines. When ores are charged into leaching vats the coarse and fine material tend to segregate, resulting in channeling of solutions and leaving the areas where fines predominate only partly leached. An improvement in the method of charging the ore into vats that would minimize the deleterious effects of the segregations of fines would increase the percentage extraction of copper.The Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co.4 recently installed classifiers to remove the primary slimes from the ore, before charging it into the leaching vats. This necessitates a separate agitation treatment for the slimes.Recent publications5 of the bureau have shown the advantages of agglomeration followed by trickle leaching to extract copper from concentrator tailings. It was shown that when equal parts of ore crushed to about 1/4-inch size and concentrator tailings were agglomerated with approximately 10 per cent of moisture, either in the form of water or leaching solution, and the mass was charred into a leaching vat the ore could be treated successfully by open-drainage trickle leaching. Even with 30 or 35 per cent of minus 200-mesh material present the ore could be leached, if it was not flooded with solution.The results obtained in agglomerating ores and slimes suggested the possible advantages to be gained by wetting the crushed ore for standard percolation-leaching plants before charging it into the vats. Wetting the ore whould make the fine material and slime cohere to the larger pieces of ore thus tend to prevent segregation when the ore is charged into the vats. The bureau, at its southwest Experiment Station and in cooperation with the Department of Mining and University of Arizona, Tucson Ariz., therefore made a study to work: out A way in which slimes could be handled in percolation leaching. The study showed that the method of charging ore into the leaching vats governed the distribution the fines and consequently the rate extraction of copper. The concrete lining for a long 8.05 km (5 mi) section of New York City Water Tunnel No. 3 was cast in place. The contractor, Grow-Perini-Skanska, placed over76,841 m3 (100,505 cy) of concrete, pouring 24 hours per day, 5 days per week. The concrete was dropped 204 m (670 ft) to the tunnel level, transported by rail to a concrete remixer and pump, and placed in 146.3m (480 ft) of full circle forms. Some of the many challenges include the sheer magnitude of the job, navigating through drifts, a raise and curves, dealing with ground water inflows, and placing the concrete within time limits.

The possibility of parameterization of hot tensile data together with creep data is investigated, for Aluminium Alloy 7475-T7351. This study represents part of a broader research program aiming at the validation of a methodology recently proposed for analyzing both kinds of data together, considering different metallic materials. The results presented in Part 1 of this work, were analyzed according to 4 traditional methods of the literature for parameterization of creep data, namely: Larson-Miller, Orr-Sherby-Dorn, Manson-Succop and Manson-Hafferd. The compatibility of the hot tensile test results with those of creep is remarkably good, indicating the possibility of using both kind of data together also in extrapolation schemes. The criterion proposed for equivalence between hot tensile and creep data is verified to work well also for this kind of material, under the present experimental conditions.

"Introduction.Oil-field operations have often been carried on under great stress and haste, in which the prime purpose has been to put the wells down rapidly as possible, without regard to a few of the various factors affecting cost. In such fields as Burkurnett, Texas, where the well locations are town lots and other small tracts, the operator was concerned primarily with in drilling. In such cases a few thousand dollars more or less in the cost of a well not considered. We are reaching a time, however, when our reserves a,more definitely outlined and properties are being along more economic lines. Operators are becoming more concerned with the actual cost of this work, and are gradually learning that fuel consumption can be reduced in drilling and producing without delaying the speed of drilling, and in the case of production, it will greatly reduce the unit cost per barrel of production.Types of Field Boilers.In the oil fields there are in general two types of boilers; those which are used for drilling wells and are of a more or less portable character, and those established later in a more permanent form and serve for the purpose,of generating steam for producing the oil. As a rule, the latter type of boilers are larger than those of the drilling type. Usually, little care is given to the installation of drilling boilers; particularly in attempting to set them up in such a way as to avoid waste in of fuel. Because of the temporary nature of these installations there may be some justification for not giving them more,attention in this resend, but it is believed that a few precautions could be taken that would amply repay the cost and trouble taken. In connection with the boiler plants that are afterwards established, when a few producing wells have been,brought in with a life of two to ten years and probably longer, much care to the boiler-plant construction and to the installation of recording instruments which will assist in operating the plant at minimum cost."

"The need for production of a competent fill was recognized early by the project partners. Consequently, a 4000 Ud paste fill plant was constructed and commissioned in early August 1994.In order to fine tune the process without risk to the underground workings, a closed pumping loop was devised on surface. After two months of this exercise, the first underground slope was filled according to specifications obtained from the pilot plant trials.This paper will focus on the operational problems encountered and the solutions adopted so far, and on a comparison between expected and actual fill production and characteristics.RésuméLa nécessité de produire un remblai de propriétés mécaniques suffisantes a été rapidement reconnue par les partenaires du projet. Conséquemment, une usine de production de remblai en pate, utilisant les residus du concentrateur d'une capacité de 4000 t/j a été construite et l'opération a débuté au mois d'aôut 1994.Dans le but de roder le précedé sans mettre en danger les installations souterraines, l'usine a été testée dans un circuit de surface. Après deux mois d'essais, le premier chantier souterrain a été rempli avec du remblai en pate selon les specifications dérivées de l'usinage pilote.Cet article présente les problemes d'opération rencontrés et leurs solutions, en plus de faire une comparaison entre les résultats prévus et ceux actuellement obtenus sur la production et sur les charactéristiques du remblai."

“Old Borate,” located in the Calico Mountains east of Barstow, California, lead domestic colemanite production from 1884 through 1907. Mineral exploration at “Old Borate” in the early 1980's, examined borate mineralization in Tertiary lacustrine strata. Surface sample and drill hole locations, geology and structure, were hand-drafted on paper maps. To re-evaluate this data, the information was digitized using Geographic Information Systems software. Digital Elevation Model based terrain modeling integrated surficial samples with drill hole data to locate favorable drilling targets. Structural relationships were used to identify hypothetical resources formed by the leaching of boron from surface exposures, redeposited at depth.

Part 1 summarizes significant accomplishments of the projects that were active during the report period. Part 2 presents short abstracts of the publications that appeared in the Bureau series and in other media during fiscal year 1966. Publications issued after June 30, 1966, are noted where pertinent in foot- notes but are not abstracted. The theme of the 2012 North American Tunneling conference (NAT) was ?Tunneling: Driving Value.? This theme best reflects where the tunneling and underground construction industry is to-day. Major advances that have been made in technologies have provided tremendous improvements in productivity, which, in turn, have allowed the industry to deliver more cost-effective and less disruptive solutions to the nation?s infrastructure needs. Despite a weak economy, domestically and globally, cities and states continue to spend billions on infrastructure improvements. For the underground construction industry, that means more transportation and water, wastewater, storm water projects and other underground structures. And, for each project completed, underground construction and tunneling technology grows. The NAT conference, put on by the Underground Construction Association (UCA) of SME, provides an outlet for technology transfers among professionals. This year?s conference, held in Indianapolis, IN June 24-27, attracted 918 attendees, up from 803 at the last NAT in 2010. The accompanying exhibit also featured 116 exhibitors occupying 140 booths. That was up from 108 booths in 2010. So, the meeting continues to grow as underground construction professionals throughout the world seek to learn from their peers.

During the past few years, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) examined and characterized conditions at a majority of the underground stone mines in the United States. Observations at these mines revealed a limited degree of roof monitoring beyond visual inspection and sounding. When monitors are used, they typically require the miner to measure movement at the roof. If conditions are unstable, the mine rmay be in a hazardous situation while recording data. Based on this scenario, researchers surmised that a simple, inexpensive monitor with the capability of recording data at a distance from the mine roof would be a safer way to gain the information. Additionally, more widespread use of monitors could potentially lead to better understanding of roof movement in general. A monitor to meet this need was designed, tested, and subsequently improved as experience was gained in its’ use at a number of underground stone mines. The Roof Monitoring Safety System (RMSS) can provide an initial indication of movement in roof beams. By understanding and measuring roof movement in underground mines, the potential for injuries and fatalities to mine workers from falls of ground can be reduced. Also, officials at a mine with a history of data are better prepared to make a decision on remedial actions in the event of ground falls. This paper will outline the evolution of the RMSS and how it can be used in a comprehensive proactive ground control safety program. Also included is a case history describing how the RMSS was used in an evaluation of the effectiveness of a mechanical impact scaling machine at an operating limestone mine.

Operational data of BOF and the slag samples for different starting conditions of phosphorus(0.06–0.26 per cent P) and silicon content (0.3–1.2 per cent Si) of hot metal have been analysed. The contribution of parameters that are well known to affect phosphorus distribution at tap, like basicity, temperature, FeO content of slag, slag mass etc., is investigated through the models of ionic theory of slag, optical basicity, regular solution approach and molecular theory of slag. The best overall results are obtained by the model based on molecular theory of slag in which several operational parameters are also incorporated. The investigations of different slag samples, based on optical, SEM, EPMA and X-ray studies, reveal the effect of MgO and Al2O3on slag morphology and phosphorus distribution in different phases. It is important to consider phosphorus distribution ratio in the solid and liquid part of slag. The solid part of slag, which is mostly dicalciumsilicate, can contain up to 5 per cent phosphorus. The phosphorus content of the liquid part of slag may depend upon the phosphorus content of hot metal or phosphorus load of slag. It is found that incorporation of effect of dicalciumsilicate in the model improves the accuracy of prediction. For better process control, the addition of iron ore towards the end of blow must be avoided while treating high phosphorus hot metal or during the production of ultra low phosphorus steels. THE Joggins coal field, Cumberland county, Nova Scotia, is on the easterly side of Chignecto bay, at the head of the bay of Fundy. In area, so far as proven, the field extends easterly from the town of Joggins about fifteen miles to Chignecto. The distance across the outcrops of the several seams exposed is approximately one mile. HISTORY Early records of coal mining in this locality are somewhat obscure, but it is known that prior to 1750 the French settlers were mining coal for their own use from the seams which outcrop in the floor of the bay adjacent to the shore, where, at low tide, the reefs are bared for a mile or more. Coal was also mined from the seams outcropping in the cliffs. It is known, too, that at Joggins coal has been mined commercially for over one hundred years. At first, all shipments were made by water, but in 1882 a railway connecting with the Intercolonial railway at Maccan was built to serve this field. GEOLOGY Due to the abundance of fossils in the strata forming the Joggins cliffs, this area was for many years a mecca for geological students from all over this continent. A 'sunken fcrest' in the shoreline was of particular interest but, due to constant erosion by the sea, this has apparently been all washed away. On the Joggins shore, the cliffs stand sixty to one hundred feet high, and six workable coal seams, with numerous smaller ones, are there exposed. Others outcrop in the reefs extending from the shore toward the bed of the bay. In working underground, fossilized trees are often found immediately overlying a coal seam, and standing at right angles to the pitch of the seam. This is said to be an unusual condition. In most cases, the bark of the tree is a fine-quality coal, with high carbon content, whereas the pulp has turned to 'stone'. There is a definite tendency for the coal to run out, or turn to shale. One seam, workable two miles from the shore, has almost completely disappeared in the outcrop at the shoreline. ? It was thought that a large area could be mined under the bay from an opening near the shore, but the first submarine level had to be abandoned at a distance of 4,000 feet, where the coal became very dirty and shaly, and the mine able area to the westward became more restricted as the mine was developed to the deep. This tendency is common to all seams.

STRETCHING from New York southwestwardly to Georgia is a great range of hills and mountains consisting of pre-Palaeozic schists, slates, and gneissic and granitoid rocks, known locally by many different names; in Pennsylvaniaa as the South mountains, the Berkshire or Durham and Reading hills, and in Virginia and farther south as the Blue ridge. To the northwest of this range lies the " Great Valley," underlain by Lower Silurian limestones, and known as the Lehigh valley, Cumberland valley, Shenandoah valley, valley of Eastern Tennessee and Georgia and by other local names, but all these are parts of one valley, geologically and geographically continuous from New Jersey to Georgia. Lying upon and along the northern flank of this range of mountains, and dipping northwestwardly under the limestone of the valley, is the Potsdam formation (Primal or No. 1 of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey), which consists of sandstone or conglomerate overlain by slates. The latter are sometimes arenaceous and occasionally are replaced in part by sandstone. This formation varies from a few feet to several hundred feet in thickness. At the outcrop the slates are completely decomposed, oxidized or disintegrated, forming a belt of clay several hundred feet wide occupying the interval between the outcroppings of the sandstone and limestone. This clay-belt includes a more or less continuous series of iron-ore (brown hematite) deposits, which have been, and still are, extensively worked. The belt is more or less continuously mineralized with iron throughout its length, and hundreds of large deposits of ore have been developed and worked, producing many millions of tons of ore.

Aluminum sheet use has been steadily increasing in the automotive industry to achieve mass reduction and improve fuel economy. One significant manufacturing challenge for aluminum sheet implementation is the reduced formability compared to the steel alloys it replaces. This paper includes friction results from the draw bead simulator (DBS), twist compression (TCT) and strip draw (SDT) tests, for two oil based lubricants and four hot melt lubricants. Formability testing was done with the same lubricants and materials, testing in pure stretch with a hemispherical punch, and in draw with a breadpan shaped die.

The area discussed in this report comprises a group of 38 counties lying in the northeast corner of Texas. It covers all, and extends beyond, the borders of what is commonly described as the East Texas Basin. It includes two major oil fields, Van and East Texas; two major gas fields, Bethany and Waskom; and a number of fields, both oil and gas, of lesser importance. All commercial oil production comes from beds of Upper Cretaceous age and almost exclusively from the basal member, the Woodbine sand. Gas is produced from both Upper and Lower Cretaceous beds with the newer production from the older beds. East Texas Field This field continued as in 1932 and 1933 to dominate the drilling and production situation throughout the oil business.
