In order to predict the composition of inclusions and to ascertain a method to prevent inclusions from forming in liquid Fe-16 mass Cr alloy, a thermodynamic database was developed through a quantitative determination of thermodynamic relationships of Cr-Al-Si-Mn systems in the liquid Fe alloys. Applications of the databases to the prediction of Mn/Si complex deoxidation with Alin Fe-16 mass Cr alloy were demonstrated in succession. The electromagnetic levitation technique using a cold crucible was employed to separate inclusions from liquid metallic alloys completely and to prevent any contamination from surroundings. Various interaction parameters in the liquid Fe-16 mass per cent Cr alloy system were determined; these are: [eAl(Fe)Cr= 0.19/T, rAl(Fe)O,Cr= -0.01, rAl(Fe)O,Cr= -0.00013, eS1Cr(Fe)= -0.38/T,rSi(Fe)O,Cr= 0.007, rO(Fe)Si,Cr= 0.0044, rA1(Fe)Si,Cr= -0.0075, rSi(Fe)A1,Cr= -0.0078, rSi(Fe)Mn,Cr= 0.005, and rMn(Fe)Si,Cr=0.01.] An improved database, utilizing interaction parameters for molten metal determined in this study, and the Fact Sage slag database of the MnO-SiO2-Al2O3-CrOx-MgO system were used for thermodynamic calculations. These were carried out under various thermodynamic conditions, and results were compared with experimental data of Si/Al, Mn/Si, and Mn/Si/Al deoxidation equilibria. With the abovementioned results, together with experimentally obtained data, thermodynamic conditions were determined, in particular Mn and Si contents, under which liquid inclusions form in liquid Fe-16 mass per cent Cr alloy. The critical Al content in liquid Fe-16 per cent Cr alloy, above which solid inclusion of corundum phase ((Al,Cr)2O3) formed, was as low as 10 ppm. This indicates that extreme care must be taken in controlling the Al content in the metal to avoid formation of solid corundum phase ((Al,Cr)2O3) inclusion. The compositional change prediction of inclusions, which originate from slag entrapment and by Ca addition, was demonstrated by use of the alloy database optimized through this study, and the Fact Sage oxide database. For Si-deoxidized Fe-16 per cent Cr alloy, high Si and low basicity of slag are effective to obtain liquid inclusions. For Al-deoxidized Fe-16 per cent Cr alloy, it is important to keep the Si content lower than 0.1 per cent and it is required to add Ca. The paper reports on a vacation work project conducted at Khuseleka No. 1 Shaft, Anglo Platinum, where there was a need to optimize the transport of personnel to level 15 and below. Approximately 900 men per hour need to travel between the shaft and the start of the current chairlift system. Time studies were used as the major indicator of the extent of the current problem, and it is recommended that a new chairlift system be installed to cover the distance from the vertical shaft station at level 15 to the chairlift decline station on level 15. A capital cost of approximately R10 million is necessary to carry out the proposed recommendation. Khuseleka No. 1 Shaft has the capacity to wind 1070 people per hour, and the current labour complement going to the level 15 shaft station stands at 1570 employees; thus at optimum efficiency the proposed chairlift system could transport the entire shift to the start of the current chairlift system in only 1 hour and 45 minutes. Reducing the distance walked at the start of the shift may also have an impact on productivity.

This paper treats primarily of the valuation of developed coal properties by the method of capitalizing their estimated average future earnings. However, reference is also made to valuations of undeveloped coal lands and to various methods of appraisal other than by future earnings. Fundamental Valuation Principles Before discussing in detail coal property valuations, a few statements bearing on the general subject will be made to present certain of the writer's views on the question as a whole. 1. A certain property at a given time has but one true value. This is not universally admitted. The appraiser rather frequently finds that a coal owner has in mind three valuations for his holdings; one, the figure at which he feels they should be appraised for taxation purposes; another, the much higher one that should be used if a loan is to be negotiated on the property; and a third, intermediate between the other two, the price for which he would be willing to dispose of his holdings were they for sale. The last is usually nearest to the true value, and because this is so the statement is generally accepted that the fair value of such a property is the price arrived at by negotiation between a willing seller and a willing buyer who are otherwise disinterested. 2. Notwithstanding the foregoing, it is only very generally and approximately true that the proper measure of the value of a given developed' coal acreage is the unit or per-acre price for which one or more bodies of similar coal in the same district have been sold recently. To give a few reasons why such a measure of value can not be strictly applied, it may be noted: a. That sales are often forced by circumstances at times when the coal business is depressed and buyers can be found only for properties that are offered at figures far below their true value. b. That conversely, during periods of unusual prosperity, abnormally high prices are paid. Such conditions obtained several years ago when coal brokers, with very profitable contracts but no sure source of supply, were bidding against inexperienced or shortsighted operators for proper-

This case history describes the engineering design and construction for the Contractor of a 35-ft-deep excavation for an 800-square-foot addition to an existing sewage pump station. The site posed unexpected geotechnical complications that included deep gravelly soil, a history of local construction difficulties, groundwater consisting of heavy salt brine, and the need to underpin the existing pump station. The project took an interesting twist when the Owner issued a change order limiting the dewatering discharge to a fraction of that required to lower the water table. This documents the interesting circumstances of this job and documents the unusual subsurface conditions in the Syracuse, NY Lakefront area.

"The kaolin deposits of Aiken County, South Carolina (fig. 1), have been worked continuously since 1852. It has been long known that the deposits contain a high percentage of alumina and that large reserves exist. These facts led to the early selection of this area for examination in the search by the Bureau of Mines for high-alumina clays. An exploratory program was started by the Bureau, and drilling was carried on from June 27, 1942, to October 31, 1942.The kaolin-bearing district occupies an area approximately 25 miles long and 11 miles wide, running northeast, with its center at Aiken, S. C. (fig. 1). Within this district, a triangular area bounded by Horse Creek, Silver Bluff Road, and Hamburg Road was roughly prospected by boring 43 machine and 12 hand holes. As a result of the data obtained, a final smaller area was chosen for more systematic prospecting. This area is bounded by Pine Log, Tewkesbury, Silver Bluff, and Craig Sawmill Roads and covers about 4,000 acres.Mineral exploration agreements covering 11,272 acres were signed by 35 property owners, and 11,956 feet was drilled in 200 holes on these properties.The Bureau of Mines exploration work in the district has indicated 19,514,000 short tons of kaolin, of which approximately 10,000,000 tons would average over 35 percent alumina.The tonnages and grades of kaolin developed by this exploration are tabulated below.All grades of this kaolin average approximately 2 percent Fe203 and 1.5 percent Ti02.This project was under the general supervision of J. R. Thoenen, supervising engineer, Non-Metals Mining Section of the Mining Division, Bureau of Mines, until July 1942. The -project was then under the general supervision of E. J. Lintner and later Rowe McCrae, consecutively district engineers for Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. The final report was prepared, under the general supervision of V..J. Lynch, chief, Raleigh Branch, Mining Division, by William A. Beck from the original report by the author.Acknowledgment is made for the wholehearted cooperation and assistance given to the Bureau of Mines by the various operating companies in the district. The quantity of data available and the rate at which we access such data are rapidly increasing. Electronic data capture systems, fleet management systems and a host of other technological advancements have created a constant stream of real-time, tactical data. However, are we taking advantage of this data? Are we converting data into useful information to aid in efficient decision-making? Mining operations are struggling with ?information overload?, finding it difficult to extract the benefits from vast stores of data. Without the necessary tools to facilitate a data filtering and information reporting process, most operations revert to old practises such as re-entering data into multiple spreadsheet reports. As a result, the ability to make effective use of data still eludes many mining operations. Some operations have taken audacious steps to rectify this situation. The De Beers Venetia mine in South Africa has implemented an integrated mining information technology solution that transforms their data into practical, usable information allowing staff and management to make decisions that improve efficiencies and reduce costs. In the absence of quantitative justification or ROI, De Beers took a risk in implementing change. Today, they are realising the benefits. This paper will unearth the information technology issues that surfaced during the Venetia implementation, then identify the benefits De Beers has obtained from deploying an integrated mining information technology solution at the Venetia mine.

I NT RODUCTION Theory indicates that linear water-floods should exhibit scaling and stabilization properties in both oil-wet and water-wet porous media'. Experimental verification of these proper-ties in oil-wet media was obtained some time ago', and more recently, Perkins', employing a high permeability unconsoli dated sand and a low oil-to-water viscosity ratio, has obtained flooding data in a water-wet medium which follow the pattern of scaling and stabilization. Also, Root and Calhoun3 have found similar trends in the displacement of gas by liquids from unconsolidated sands. In general, however, the experimen-tal evidence appears still somewhat conflicting since scaling and stabilization of water floods in water-wet media has not been observed in most of the studies to date'.".'. The purpose of this paper is to provide a more comprehensive picture of waterflood behavior in water-wet media and to corroborate the validity of the scaling and stabiliza-tion concepts. The need for differentiating between the intrinsic nature of water-oil displacements inside a porous medium and perturbating secondary end effects is discussed, pertinent experimental procedures are outlined and the results of flooding tests conducted at low and at high oil-to-water viscosity ratios on con- solidated, water-wet Alundum cores are analyzed. END EFFECTS IN WATER-WET MEDIA Outlet End Effects The peculiar feature of the outlet end effect in water-wet cores is that it not only results in an excessive wetting phase saturation at the outflow face,'.' but that it also retards the moment of water breakthrough: i.e., causes an undue delay in the appearance of water in the produced effluent. Conditions existing in a water-wet core when water first arrives at the outflow face are schematically shown in Fig. 1. At this flooding stage the saturation distribution, Fig. la, has not yet been distorted by the outlet end effect. A water-invaded pore at the outlet core face, opening into the oil-filled void space between the end of the core and the end plate of the flooding cell, is illustrated in Fig. lb. The curvature of the water-oil interface is concave toward the outlet, and the pressure on the water side of the interface is lower than on the oil side by an amount equal to a certain capillary pressure (Fig. lc). Before the water (of this particular pore) can be produced from the core, it is apparent that the pressure in the water phase must exceed that in the oil outside the core. Accordingly. when water first reaches the outlet face, it will not leave the core but will accumulate inside, and only oil will be produced. Eventually, as the water injection is continued. sufficient pressure is built up in the water to reverse the curvature of the interfaces in the outlet pores, and only then will water be produced from the core. This stage, illustrated in Fig. 2. corresponds to the conventional "water breakthrough" observed in flooding experiments. For purposes of discussion, it is convenient to distinguish between the flooding stage at which water first arrives at the outlet face of a core (Fig. 1) and the stage at which water is first produced from the core ( Fig. 2). The Bureau of Mines investigated pegmatite and granite formations at Copper Mountain, Fremont County, Wyoming, for recovery of tantalum and niobium. Sampling of surface exposures identified about 1.27 mega tonne of pegmatite resource material ranging between 0.02 and 0.04% Ta20, and 0.007% Hb20,. Beneficiation studies were conducted involving coarse-grained and fine grained pegmatite samples. Over 80% recovery of the coarse-grained tantalite was achieved in a concentrate averaging over 45% combined tantalum-niobium oxide. Lower concentrate grades and recoveries resulted from the treatment of fine-grained pegmatite.

"Since the mid-19th century the River Emscher in the German Ruhr District has been used for disposing of wastewater. In the early 1990s, it was decided to replace the existing open wastewater system with a sewer system and to restore the River Emscher to its natural state. The major Emscher conversion project is divided into a large number of individual schemes, with construction phase 30 being the largest. By applying the pipe jacking method, interlinking tunnels with section lengths in excess of 1,100 m are constructed. USAGE OF THE EMSCHER OVER TIME The 85-km long river Emscher flows right through the Ruhr District. It has its source to the east of Dortmund and flows into the river Rhine near Dinslaken (Figure 1).The Emscher has been used to dispose of wastewater since industrialization began about 200 years ago. Intensive coal mining over the years led to considerable subsidence causing stagnant sewer areas which in turn led to typhus and other deceases. Thus in 1899, the Emschergenossenschaft was founded to create an efficient interceptor system for a catchment area of 865 km² through lining, raising and Emschergenossenschaft decided to free the waterways of the Emscher system from sewage and to improve them in ecological terms by 2020. A budget of 4.5 billion euros was earmarked for this purpose.The construction of sewer conduits began in order to no longer transfer the wastewater into the Emscher. The currently ongoing construction of the “Emscher Interceptor” - the main sewer - represents the heart of the Emscher conversion project. The interceptor will run along the river over a length of 51 km. Three pumping stations are required to confine the sewer’s depth to elevations between 15 and a maximum of 40 m below the surface. Since early 2012, the Emscher has been free from wastewater east of the Dortmund-Deusen clarification plant. There are two further clarification plants situated along the Emscher, which treat the still contaminated river water down-stream. Once the Emscher Interceptor is in operation, they will receive wastewater solely from the tunnel system."

The prediction and control of ground deformations due to underground mining are important considerations in the permitting, planning, and monitoring of coal mining operations. The prediction of mining-induced ground movements using the influence function method is a mature technology and is widely used in many coal basins around the world. Such movements mainly include subsidence, horizontal displacement, and horizontal and/or ground strain. Predictions can be accomplished using regional subsidence parameters and site-specific data.

ONE of the most common basic open-hearth furnace products is a simple carbon steel with a carbon range from 0.05 to 0.15 per cent. The material is widely used for sheets, tubes, bars, wire and the innumerable special objects of secondary fabrication. The properties of the material vary over wide ranges, depending on the more exact composition and details of manufacture or treatment that affect its structure. The present paper is a review of those properties and structures that have been found by studying this steel as used in the cap screw industry. At first glance this might be thought a narrow application of the steel, but, since the industry uses the material in the cold-worked, annealed and heat-treated conditions, the title of the paper may be excused for its comprehensiveness. Yet, in studying the wide ranges of properties and structures that preclude a more specific title, there can be no suggestion of completeness or finality. Even a summary of a few years' work is no more than a preliminary survey of a field that will be fertile in scientific data and industrial products for many years to come. An outline of the structures will be given first, then a list of the previous contributions that are at hand and finally some details of the work and related problems, especially concerning this low-carbon steel in the surface-hardened condition.

Mineral property valuations to be used for Canadian securities regulatory purposes must comply with CIMVal1. The technical basis for a CIMVal report is the same as that required for a technical report that complies with NI 43-1012. NI 43-101 describes the content to be covered in a technical report, while also covering other requirements, one of which is that the report should be based on a property visit. CIMVal is based on five tenets that the valuator must follow: ? Materiality. ? Independence. ? Transparency. ? Competence. ? Reasonableness. Upon its adoption by CIM Council in 2003, it was hoped that the new CIMVal code would be adopted without change by the several Canadian regulators.

Ultrafine-grained surface layers were obtained by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) in copper and titanium samples. The thermal properties of the deformed layers were characterized using a scanning thermal microscopy (SThM) that allows thermal conductivity to be mapped down to the submicrometer scale. A theoretical approach, based on this investigation, was used to calculate the heat flow from the probe tip to the sample and then estimate the thermal conductivities at different scanning positions. Experimental results and theoretical calculation demonstrate that SThM can be used as a powerful tool for the thermal property and microstructural analysis of ultrafine-grained microstructures.

Deep Well turbine pumps receive constantly increasing application to the problem of mining water and other fluids from great depths. Many installations of medium settings are presently operating successfully and it is felt that mach greater depths are immediately within reach. Settings and lifts in excess of 2000 feet: are not at all out of reason with present knowledge experience, and materiels; however, conditions of individual applications will govern in each case and dictate methods and possibilities to the designer. Design and operating problems of deep set -turbine pumps ire discussed together with a description of various types of equipment falling within this category. Although the deep well turbine pump has been produced In the vertical turbine pump industry for many years, the connotation of the word "deep" still remains questionable. Among the manufacturers of this type of machinery, answers to the question implying the practical limitation of setting for a deep well pump will vary to an extreme. Most pump designers are in accord that this type of equipment has not yet been exploited to its fullest degree; however, the subject is admittedly fraught with unsolved problems and un¬tried solutions so that such a discussion must necessarily derive from personal opinion and, belief., even though based on substantial experience and background. For this reason, it will be stipulated that the present writing will deal with what may be termed euphemistically ?a highly controversial subject.? During the nineteenth century, a paper was published under proper authority proving beyond question that the human body could not withstand speeds exceeding 20 miles per hour. As a limitation, this looks ' pretty ridiculous to us today. At the beginning of the twentieth century, there was not a single machine in operation that could be described as mullti-stage deep well centrifugal pump. The electrification of Australian mine sites will see a boom in the use of batteries of all chemistries. Lead acid batteries, a traditional mainstay of the mining industry, are expected to nearly double by 2030, however their use will be eclipsed by the explosive growth in lithium batteries. By 2030 the lithium battery market is forecast to be nearly four times the size of the lead acid battery market. Unfortunately, this will result in a corresponding avalanche of waste batteries to be disposed of. Barely a day goes by without battery generated fires being reported in the media and they have become an increasing nightmare for waste management companies and waste facilities. The safe recycling of batteries will also become increasingly important for mine sites to achieve their sustainability goals and reduce their environmental footprint. What are the risks posed by waste batteries, what are the regulatory requirements and how can you manage or eliminate these risks? What current practises does your mine site currently have for the safe management and disposal of batteries from your site? How prepared are you for the coming avalanche of waste batteries?

The opposition to the project has risen as a result of some political pressures and from public perceptions about the project’s necessity and its impact on the neighborhood. As a result of this controversy, the Underground Conservation Hall was quickly termed “Bredesen’s Bunker” by the Media. Close exposures for blasting, required by the Conservation Hall construction project, have been regulated by specifications that regulate seismic monitoring, pre-blast and post-blast inspections. Planned blasting for the project included blasting to a depth of 30 feet (9.14 meters) within 35 feet (10.67 meters) of the front of the newly renovated Tennessee Executive Residence. Excavation for the project found more competent rock at higher elevations than identified in test drilling which required blasting within 2 feet (0.61 meters) of the side of the Residence.

Traditionally the feed to coal preparation plants was de-slimed at 0,5 mm. The +0,5 mm size fraction was processed via dense-medium cyclones and the -0,5 mm size fraction was beneficiated with froth flotation, water-only cyclones or spirals. With the introduction of large diameter cyclones, the aperture sizes of de-sliming screens have progressively increased to about 3 mm in the belief that the larger cyclones are not able to effectively beneficiate coal which has a particle size below the ?breakaway? size. The efficiency of separation in the large dense-medium cyclones is improved by presenting a coarser feed to the units. At the same time, the capacity of the de-sliming screens is increased due to the larger screen apertures and in effect, the throughput capacity of the dense-medium section is increased. The 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction, which was previously processed in the dense-medium cyclones, is now added to the fine coal size fraction and processed by water-only methods such as Teetered Bed Separators (TBS) and spirals. Whether this practice is the most economical way to process the 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction requires further thought since the best processing route for the 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction will depend on a number of factors, amongst which are: o The washability of the coal and the amount of near-density material o Processing efficiency o Specification of the required product o The price paid by the customer for the product o The cost of processing the coal Breakaway size The ?breakaway? size is defined as the particle size below which the Epm of the smaller particles starts to decrease significantly. Bosman1 provides an approximate breakaway size versus cyclone diameter (Figure 1). It should be kept in mind though that the Epm of the small particles is a function not only of the cyclone diameter but also of feed pressure, medium density, medium viscosity, particle shape and density, top-size of particles in the feed, etc.

"INTRODUCTION A previous paper by H. H. Storch 4 described. three processes for the production of potassium sulphate from polyhalite (K2S01.MgSO1.2CaS04.2H2o), Since these processes depended upon calcination of polyhalite followed by leaching with water at 100°C., the fundamental reactions occurring in these steps were discussed in detail. This paper, which describes processes producing syngenite (K2S04.CaSO4.H2O) and potassium sulphate and gives data concerning the production of by-product magnesia, presents the results of work performed at the Non metallic Minerals Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, maintained at New Brunswick, N. J., in cooperation with Rutgers University.A study of the solubility relationships of the system 5 Ca++ -Mg++ -K+-SO4 = H20 at 25ºC. shows that syngenite is stable in the presence of a concentrated MgSO4 solution, the K2SO : equilibrium concentration being comparatively low (2.6 per cent), The processes described below, which involve the conversion of calcined polyhalite to syngenite, are based on the 25°C. equilibria. It has further been found that syngenite can be decomposed by water at 100ºC, yielding a 9 to 10 per cent K250 solution, the solid phase being potassium calcium pentasulphate (K2SO, 3CaSO.H2O, hereafter referred to as ""pentasulphate""). This latter compound is unstable in the presence of water at 25°C., its decomposition resulting in a solution containing about 3 per cent of K2SO4 and a solid phase consisting of gypsum. This behaviour of syngenite with water at 100°C. and of pentasulphate with water at 25ºC. constitutes the basis of processes for the production of K2SO4 by way of the conversion of calcined polyhalite to syngenite,Syngenite is a product which may be used as a fertilizer per se. As produced in the process to be described, it contains about 50 per cent of K2SO1, and will readily give up its potash content on treatment with water, although the limiting concentration at ordinary temperatures is approximately 3 per cent. This definite but limited solubility should make this product more desirable as a fertilizer then the more concentrated forms of potash salts which have higher solubilities and hence involve the danger or plant injury due to a high local concentration of potash."

It has been previously demonstrated [1,2] that using selective collector bar rodding has a big impact on the uniformity of the current density at the top surface of the cathode block and hence on the intensity of the horizontal current in the metal pad, The present study investigates the impact of using selective collector bar rodding on the MHD stability of a 500 kA aluminium electrolysis cell, For this purpose the recently developed MHD package for the aluminium reduction cell time dependent behavior is used.
