Digital optical microscopy (DOM) and automated SEM-based (ASEM) mineralogy systems (MLA, QEMSCAN) have experienced significant developments within the last decade. However these developments have been independent from each other and the two mineralogical techniques have so far not yet been integrated to combine the strengths and technical benefits of both analytical platforms. This detailed comprehensive mineralogical information is critical support for geometallurgy.Major hardware and software advances in DOM in the last few years have provided important new capabilities with potential applications to automated mineralogy. These technological advances have been largely driven by sectors outside mining (eg medical pathology) and have not yet been widely adopted within the minerals industry. The advent of DOM offers significantly more automated mineralogy capabilities than traditional expert-mineralogist driven optical microscopy. This is based on advances in automated image acquisition, high resolution cameras for digital imaging, imaging of large areas through mosaic options, integration of multiple layers and application of advanced image analysis techniques.Ongoing research involves combining the outputs of DOM and ASEM-based microscopy to create new capabilities for integrated microscopy based on development of advanced cross-platform image fusion and data integration between DOM and ASEM (exploiting the benefits of both analytical platforms). This requires non-linear image registration and transfer of mineralogical identification from ASEM to DOM systems using sophisticated image manipulation and data analysis software.Examples will be given of image fusion and data registration for a range of different ore types. Image fusion techniques are demonstrated using a porphyry copper deposit sample where sulfides and precious metals are classified using the MLA and gangue mineralogy obtained from DOM images. Data integration enables creation of a library containing optical property variability information for minerals identified by the MLA; thus reducing the reliance on skilled mineral identification by supplementing human interpretation

An artificial standard material has been developed and used to examine the robustness of some of the procedures for correcting stereological bias. Different mineral liberation distributions were constructed from the standard material. The particles were mounted, sectioned and the sectioning data measured with an electron microscope interfaced to an image analyser. Four correction procedures were used and the corrected and true liberation distributions compared. It was found that the large-sections correction provided a simple, uncorrupted correction. Hill's fast approximation performed well except in cases of narrow liberation distributions; the sectioning data appeared to support the assumption that the locked section and locked particle distributions are identical. Barbery's correction performed well in most cases, having difficulty only with the very irregular liberation distribution. The PARGEN correction was able to provide a good estimate of the true amount of free material, but had difficulty in predicting the locked particle distribution

Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The SW part of the Southern Uplands is a back-arc section of an accretionary thrust system, divided into structural blocks by major NE-SW shear zones and NW-SE faults forming the margins of Permian half-grabens. The highest arsenic levels in stream sediments (over 65 ppm) are associated with those blocks carrying brittle-ductile transition fabrics. Three factors combine to recomend the area as having potential for gold mineralisation: As-rich greywackes as country rock, felsic intrusions and a major shear zone. Selected stream sediments were analysed for gold using lead fire assay with ultra-pure flux and ICP-MS finish. Several localities showed over 15 ppb Au, the three most significant being within the hanging wall of the Orlock Bridge Fault and each having distinct characteristics

The title of this address was selected before I had an opportunity to consider in detail the matters that I would like to discuss. Accordingly, I chose a very broad subject-so broad indeed that it would be foolhardy for me to attempt to deal with more than a few aspects of it. I do not propose to touch. at all on the developments to date of our mining and metallurgical enterprises, beyond paying a sincere tribute'to the skill and enterprise of those who have established an international reputation for Australian mining and metallurgy. I would rather look ahead and discuss certain factors that will play a decisive part in the future development of our mineral resources. I do this in no dogmatic spirit, and I hope that my remarks may lead to discussions which will stimulate action where it is needed.In recent years my colleagues and I have been forced by circumstances to give consideration to problems in the fields of mining and geology, and in process metallurgy, which lie outside the scope of our own research work. People come to us with metallurgical problems because they know of no more appropriate place to go, and it is distressing to have to inform them that it is nobody's job to offer them advice and assistance. I want to suggest to your Institute that it should press strongly for the provision of properresearch facilities for the mining and metallurgical industries, such as aready exist in most enlightened countries. In such countries, those connected with the development of mineral resources are able to obtain information and advice from Geological Surveys, Mines Departments or Bureaux of Mines, which offer far more comprehensive services than are available in this country.Before discussing specific technical problems of the mining and minerals industries, I shall enunciate certain general principles that I believe should be followed in respect to the technical side of the development of all Australian industries. The problem can, I suggest, be considered in three parts-technical education production, and research. I shall confine my remarks mostly to the research aspect, for it is with this that I am most familiar.For the efficient development of any industry in Australia, it is essential firstly that We should learn what is going on abroad, and secondly that we should simultaneously conduct independent research. Ever since opening, the M25 motorway to the west of London has carried a rapidly increasing volume of traffic. The section of M25 between the junctions with the M3 and M4 motorways, which is in the near vicinity of Heathrow airport, is the most heavily trafficked section. Piling and ground treatment was required for motorway widening works over this route, which is 7 miles long. The foundation works were undertaken next to the live motorway and beneath the flightpath for aircraft landing and taking off at the airport. The paper describes the foundation construction techniques used, and the how the methods were affected by the live motorway and the height restrictions imposed by the airport. A unique method of piled retaining wall construction is also described.

In dealing with various subsidence cases, accurate predictions of mining induced subsidence are the basis for correct assessment of subsidence influences and subsequent mitigation efforts. There is a good demand for a reliable tool to perform the subsidence predictions and related tasks. A comprehensive and integrated subsidence prediction model, CISPM, developed by the senior authors in the later 1980?s and early 1990?s (Peng and Luo, 1992) is one of such tools. Built on solid mathematical models and calibrated by a large number of collected subsidence cases, CISPM provides a rich set of features needed in subsidence engineering and research works. Its reliability and usefulness have been proven by numerous field applications. This upgrade of CISPM will not only preserve its original features and reliability but also provide some new needed features and a more user-friendly working environment.

Acid mist is the undesired result of copper electro-winning (EW) process, generating a contaminated and hazardous environment in the working areas, as well as promoting high corrosion conditions for structures and equipment in the EW tank-house due to the buoyancy of sulfuric acid in aerosol form. Likewise, organic entrainments that occasionally occur in this process contaminate the cathodes, as well as increasing the risk of fire. LateralVex® and LateralFlow® are technologies that effectively and efficiently solve these problems, without affecting the usual activities of the operators, thus presenting a significant distinction with respect to other technologies that seek to solve these problems. Minera Antucoya, an AMSA group company, which produces 80,000 tons of electrolytic Cu per year, decided to install both technologies for its EW tank-house, LateralVex® in commercial cells and LateralFlow® in scavenger cells to keep both the acid mist and the organic entrainments under control. This paper presents the effects of applying these technologies in Minera Antucoya’s electro-winning plant, the challenges addressed, the difficulties encountered, the problems and opportunities that their implementation involved, as well as the surprising results obtained at the time of measuring the acid mist— less than one hundred’s part of the Allowed Weighted Limit—in samples taken with the plant operating at maximum current capacity. Additionally, the paper includes some of the improvements identified during the period, more than 3 years, in which these technologies have been in operation in Minera Antucoya. INTRODUCTION Electrowinning is the most used electro-chemical process in the hydrometallurgical industry for the recovery of highly pure metallic copper as its final product, which is formed in previous stages in an aqueous medium that goes through a selective process using organic solvents to separate impurities and concentrate the metal in a sulfuric acid solution. In the last stage, this solution goes through a process in which high- density current at a low voltage is applied, so that the metal in the solution will deposit in solid state on a plate, usually a stainless-steel plate. This last process involves the generation of other sub-products due to the electro-chemical dissociation of the electrolyte’s components, or to the addition of chemical additives, or due to specific physical conditions or lack of controls during the operation.

Nowadays, the demand for a finer grind in minerals processing has set new challenges within the industry, particularly for grinding technology. Apart from a finer grind, energy efficiency is also a key driver in optimising comminution technology.Stirred milling technology, already proven in many other industries, delivers a modern, sophisticated, flexible and energy efficient grinding solution for fine and ultra fine grinding in minerals processing. Fine grinding technology is utilised particularly in concentrate regrinding to complete the liberation of valuable minerals after the first stage of concentration. Maintaining the correct particle and particle size distribution of the regrind product is crucial for downstream process performance. Stirred milling technology offers the unique possibility for online control and optimisation of the regrind product particle size. This paper describes the basis of this online control possibility and discusses the implementation of stirred milling technology in minerals processing, particularly in regrinding applications. The establishment of a pilot plant for the continuous production of titania pigment and nano-titania is discussed. The plant was designed, constructed and operated on the Necsa site. The TiO2 production capacity is 7?10 kg.h-1 by the reaction of TiCl4 and O2at>1000°C. Liquid TiCl4 is sprayed under pressure into a plasma reactor where it evaporates and reacts with O2 to form TiO2. Process optimization has allowed for continuous production without any clogging or blockages. The primary advantage of the plasma-assisted process is the possibility to recover and recycle the chlorine values in high yield as Cl2 for use in the manufacture of TiCl4. The HCl formed in most conventional fossil-fuelled processes makes Cl2 recovery and recycling much more difficult. Particle size distribution analysis of the fine, white product revealed a d50= 125 nm. The raw product consisted of 60% rutile that could be increased to 80?100% rutile by post-annealing. The specific surface area (SSA) of the pigment was 8?20 m2?g-1(BET). According to the CIE colour index the ?whiteness? (L*>95) of the plasma-produced pigment was better than that of several commercially available pigments. The particle size could be manipulated by controlling the TiCl4 feed rate, gas flowrates, and the particle quench rate and residence time. Nano-sized TiO2 powders with a particles size (d50) as small as 50 nm were also successfully produced in this way.

Sensor-based ore sorting technology is a growing area of interest due to lower-grade ore deposits and higher costs of processing, among other reasons. Among the sensors currently utilized in the particle sorting industry, X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), as the only sensor with elemental analysis capabilities, has always attracted more attention. Currently, the bench-scale amenability tests for this sensor are performed using hand-held XRF analysers. However, this testing method overestimates the performance of the XRF sorter, and therefore, the results from these tests can be misleading and are often mispresented. The work presented here was conducted on a copper mine and investigates how the sensor’s sensitivity to copper deteriorates under different testing methods. This work compares and correlates the results of an Olympus hand-held XRF analyser, static, and dynamic sorter responses with the actual grades of the rocks. The results confirmed that, the sorter response was extremely prone to blind spots. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that although the static sorter’s responses were comparable in terms of rock identification to those of the hand-held XRF analyzer and assays, the accuracy of the dynamic sorter response deteriorated both as a function of grade of the rocks as well as the potential for blind spots. INTRODUCTION Sensor-based sorting technology has been gaining increasing attention even by larger mining corporations as ore grades decrease, deposits get deeper and therefore cost of mining and processing increases. There are various types of sensors that are currently being used in the particle sorting industry such as X-Ray Transmission (XRT), Color, Electromagnetic (EM), Near-Infrared (NIR) and others. However, none of the sensors are capable of identifying and quantifying particles by the elemental content, except for X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF). XRF is a non-destructive, surficial analytical technique used to measure elemental composition of materials. X-ray fluorescence happens when a secondary x-ray (fluorescence) is released after a sample is bombarded by a primary x-ray source. From a sorting perspective, the most common and expected issues that are associated with XRF sorting are lower throughputs compared to other sensors due to particle presentation limitation as well as the need to wash the material before introducing to the sorter. However, one important issue that is mostly neglected is how the amenability tests are performed and how realistic the obtained results are. Current amenability test procedure utilises a handheld XRF analyser (such as an Olympus InnovX, as used in this work) on multiple, generally 4, sides of the rock and uses the average measured grade as a criterion for separation. While this is a widely accepted technique, it fails to consider some important factors such as exposure time and the distance between the sensor and the particle. These factors can significantly affect the sorting outcome.

Federal Bureau of Mines studies showed that some organic amine hydrochlorides can be used as dehydrating agents for producing anhydrous magnesium chloride from hydrates and brines. Laboratory-scale tests showed that double salts are formed by reacting 35 percent magnesium chloride brine or spray-dried magnesium chloride with pyridine hydrochloride. Heating decomposed these double salts to anhydrous magnesium chloride and recycle pyridine hydrochloride. Pyridine hydrochloride also chlorinated any magnesium oxide in the spray-dried magnesium chloride. The anhydrous magnesium chloride obtained by the method described contained less than 0.8 percent oxygen. More than 98 percent of the organic amine hydrochloride was recovered.

The growing use and acceptance of electric vehicles (EV), as evidenced by the record sales of over 750 thousand vehicles in 2016 and a current global EV stock of 2 million vehicles, is putting pressure on sourcing raw materials such as cobalt, and to a lesser extent, nickel. Global supply is poorly diversified, with 50– 60% of global cobalt production sourced solely from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). One potential source for cobalt and nickel are low-grade nickeliferous pyrrhotite tailings, of which 50–100 million tonnes are present in the Sudbury area alone. This paper presents the extraction of cobalt and nickel from this material using a combination of flotation and bioleaching technologies. The findings of a high-level techno-economic analysis of the proposed processing flowsheet are presented.

The Silver Spring Transit Center is a new three-level transit center that will include bus loops for County, Metro and intercity buses, parking, and retail space. It replaces an existing bus station and connects to a busy metro rail station in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland. Significant site constraints in both plan and profile had to be dealt with in developing a design for support of the structure. Over 90 rock-socketed drilled shafts ranging in size from 3 to 7 foot in diameter were ultimately used to accommodate the limited space and large column loads, and to adapt to the variable rock surface at the site. Site access during design was limited due to the existing active bus station, so contract documents were adapted to include further explorations. Differences in anticipated and actual field conditions regarding the depth, quality, and variability of the rock had to be overcome in construction. Osterberg Load Cell testing during construction allowed for verification and optimization of the shaft design. Additional issues dealt with on this constrained site in an urban setting included construction staging issues, such as working around specialty contractors for tieback walls, blasting operations for rock excavation, productions issues for hard bedrock, as well as coordination issues with third parties, most notably the Washington Metro Area Transit Authority. Aspects of the foundation design and optimization, preparation of the contract documents to deal with the complicated nature of the project, and lessons learned from construction are also discussed.

"The use of sensors to monitor gaseous species in industrial processes is discussed. All of the existing systems have disadvantages. Sensors, based upon solid electrolytes, which can be placed directly into the gas stream are attractive but many also respond to oxygen, need to be sealed at high temperatures and require a separate reference. This paper describes sensors, usually based upon two electrolytes, which do not respond to oxygen and do not require high temperature gas seals or separate references. The application of these sensors to the measurement of carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and trioxide and hydrogen chloride is described. These sensors can be placed directly into the gas stream at elevated temperatures.IntroductionOn-line gas sensing is becoming more important as concerns regarding the environment mount. There are many established techniques for monitoring gases in industrial processes, with applications in safety monitoring, chemical analysis or process and emission control. Flue gas analysis involves the greatest technical complexity, requiring several sophisticated capital-intensive spectroscopic instruments for different species as well as needing highly skilled operators. There are also several instruments, based upon aqueous electrochemistry, which are available for the analysis of the gases S03, S02, N02 but these require that the gases are sampled at high temperature and cooled, prior to analysis. These instruments cannot be considered as giving on-line measurements of the gas composition. Furthermore, the power requirement of these instruments frequently precludes battery operation for field and domestic use."

In the Shanghai area, the soil conditions are such that bearing piles have become an essential foundation part of the new highrise buildings. In order to reduce the settlements under the high working loads of about 2300 kN/pile, the Chinese building authorities require the pile tip to penetrate into the compact sand layer, situated at approx. 60-70 m depth. No H-piles have yet been tested under these conditions in Shanghai. This paper describes the driving of 8 H-bearing piles with 4 different shapes and with lengths varying from 45 to 75 m. Dynamic measurements are performed during driving and after a wait time of approx. 40 hours in order to assess the change in bearing capacity in function of time and in order to get an idea about the resistance distribution along the piles by using a stress wave analysis program (CAPWAP). One pile is equipped with channels between the flanges for executing verticality measurements with an inclinometer. However, this test has not yet been performed. One month after driving, two piles of 75 m length are statically loaded both in vertical and in horizontal directions.

These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in man; instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. However, operating costs are essential to technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that the scope of the cost tabulations shall not be misunderstood. This paper deals with the quarrying and crushing methods used at the Avon Mountain trap-rock quarry of the Atlas Sand, Gravel & Stone Co., in West Hartford, Conn.

Ferroalloy producers are large-scale users of electrical energy, which in many countries is in short supply and increasingly expensive. Preheating and/or pre-reduction using natural gas, recycled furnace gas or coal fines have lowered the specific use of electricity, but the high energy concentration necessary for most reduction processes can be achieved only by the use of high electric currents. Most countries have insufficient electricity to supply the demands of industry and the domestic consumer, particularly during certain periods of the day and certain times of the year. The generation and distribution of electricity is a large-scale expensive business, which is financed and managed directly or indirectly by government bodies in most countries. Both economic and political imperatives determine how much electrical energy is made available to whom and at what price. In South Africa demand is set to outstrip supply within the next few years, and the local supplier Eskom has moved from a traditional demand tariff pricing structure to a time-of-use tariff pricing so as to limit peak demand usage. This will mean a substantial increase in electricity cost to those users unable or unwilling to reduce consumption during peak periods. The optimal use of the available electrical energy depends both on the process, the furnace size, the configuration and infrastructure of each plant and its cost structure. As the cost and availability of electricity is set to change dynamically, the management of the situation becomes a real time control and optimisation problem. This paper discusses some the process and operational constraints associated with low- or no-load conditions and how to manage the situation. Electrode management will be one of the key issues.
