In a continental environment, sediment mobilisation, dispersion and deposition are mainly controlled by mass gravity and streamflow processes. Alluvial sedimentary systems have an important economic value because of their capacity to host mineral resources. In the Hamersley Province, alluvial iron deposits (including the well-known detrital iron deposits and channel iron deposits) play an increasing role on the commodity market. Alluvial deposits exploration is challenging and generally involves geomorphologic and stratigraphic field studies, as well as expensive exploratory surface sampling and drilling. We applied a new surface processes modelling technique to investigate iron rich material, ie the erosion product of bedded iron formations -dispersion in the Hamersley Province. LECODE is a 3D-parallel surface processes forward modelling code designed to compute surface flow and solve erosion, transport and sedimentation on the geological time scale. The code offers new quantitative ways to better understand how sedimentary deposits develop in intra-continental and channel environments. Here we show that our integrated forward model is capable of opening a window to the construction of sedimentary architectures, including facies distribution, deposit thickness and development of heterogeneities such as mineral traps over the modelled domain. The model results represent 1 Ma of surface evolution and are validated through comparison to published paleovalleys map and known occurrences of iron ore deposits. This numerical modelling approach allows for the first time to track alluvial materials from source to sink through time, test existing geological models and faithfully reproduce the first order distribution of alluvial iron deposits in an area of interest. This work strongly suggests the presence of iron rich alluvial deposits reserves under cover, in unexplored detrital fans in the Fortescue Valley. This method, potentially coupled with sediment geochemistry and basin analyses studies, has the potential to maximise alluvial iron deposits exploration success, while reducing exploration cost and associated environmental impact.CITATION:Duclaux, G, Salles, T and Ramanaidou, E R, 2013. This is a preliminary study of the statistical variation of the pressures on a target above a buried explosion. The data were taken at various distances from the charge centerline for three heights of the target above the soil and one charge depth of burial. All tests were conducted in saturated sand. They show that peak pressures and times of peaks are neither repeatable from shot to shot nor rotationally symmetric within a single shot. The peak pressure and time of peak at each location can be represented by cumulative normal distributions. The paper describes the means and standard deviations of these distributions at eight distances from the charge center for each height of target. These are used to determine the change in standard deviation of the distribution with distance from the charge centerline and height of target. The effect of scale on the mean peak pressures and times of peaks and on their standard deviations at a single scaled distance from the centerline of the charge are explored using various charge weights.

In safety work a study of past accidents is of value in determining means of reducing future accidents of the same character. This is particularly true with reference to coal-mine explosions. Data from publications of the United States Bureau of Mines and from published reports of the State inspector of coal mines of Colorado are presented in this circular in the belief that they will be of value to operators by indicating methods of preventing future coal-mine explosions. The tables included are complete only with regard to major disasters. The Bureau of Mines considers as a major disaster one in which five 'or more men are killed. However, this circular also includes a considerable number of minor disasters, Various explosions in the coal mines of Colorado from 1883 to 1932, inclusive, are listed with information available as to their probable cause, number of men killed and measures which, if they had been in use at that time, might have prevented them. John McNeil, first Colorado State coal-mine inspector, on page 43 of his first report for the period ended July 31, 1884, made the following recommendations for the prevention of explosions in the coal industry: True causes could be traced either to insufficient ventilation, carelessness and lack of rigid discipline in carrying on energetic ventilation and other precautions needed to be enforced in a mine giving off explosive gases. *** When any quantity of fine coal dust is observed in an entry, air course, or room it should be made damp and be removed from the mine, and thus beep every place as free from dust as possible. *** A system of bratticing close up to the face of each and every place in the mine from crosscut last made (whether gas should just then show its presence or not) which should not be more than 50 or 75 feet according to the nature of the mine.

In order to produce good quality ammonium paratungstate, Sn needs be removed efficiently from the tungstate processing solution. The nascent hydrous ferric oxide has excellent adsorption ability and is often used as an adsorbent to remove metal ions from aqueous solution. In this paper, nascent hydrous ferric oxide is used to remove Sn from tungstate solution. Through experimental, the effects of pH value, reagent amount of adsorbent, reaction temperature and reaction time on the Sn removal are investigated. The study shows that 98% of Sn can be removed effectively from sodium tungstate solution and only 2% of W is lost during process under the conditions of pH 9~12, reagent amount of Fe addition 40 times Sn amount, reaction time 30min and room temperature. As the Fe addition reaches 90 times of Sn concentration in the ammonium tungstate solution, 99% of Sn is removed and APT with zero level purity national standard is obtained.

"Preliminary examination of tungsten deposits on the Mountain View property near Hyder, Alaska, was made by Neal M. Muir, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines daring the summer of 1942. Fifteen samples were cut, rough esti¬mates of ore reserves were made, and it was proposed to extend the drift on scheelite-bearing vein 300 feet in a northwesterly direction.From May 22 to October 24, 1944, an exploratory project was conducted on the property by the Bureau. In the course of this work, the camp buildings were rehabilitated; the dam, hydraulic line, and machinery were repaired; 226 feet of drift was driven; 80 groove samples aggregating 3.9 tons in weight were cut; a 6,000-foot surface and underground traverse was run; and the area was mapped in detail.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to the national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.Special acknowledgment is doe Neal W. Sanford, acting chief, Alaska Division, Mining Branch, for their supervision of the field work and revision of the report.Acknowledgment is also made to Silbak Premier, Ltd., for rendering valuable assistance in the repair of equipment and for extending various courtesies to Bureau of Mines personnel during the conduct of this project.The Mountain View property is located at latitude 55° 59' north, and longitude 130° 03' west in the Salmon River mining district of southeastern Alaska, about 5 miles in a northwesterly direction from the town of Hyder, which lies at the head of Portland Canal, as shown in figures 1 and 2. Vein outcrops and surface workings are at an elevation of 950 feet and occupy the west flank of a low ridge between Skookum and Fish Creeks, as shown in figure 3. The portal of the long adit exposing the vein at depth is on Skookum Creek about 550 feet north of the confluence of Skookum and Fish Creeks.Access to the property is over a 4-foot wide trail built and maintained by the United States Forest Service. This trail is suitable for pack animals and is adequate for transportation of supplies and material for exploratory work. During the periods of camp construction and past exploratory operations a 4,000-foot, single-cable, aerial tramway, now in disrepair, served for transportation of materials and all machinery from the Salmon River Highway to the property. The cost of such hauling was high, amounting to $12 a ton. Topography is suitable for construction of a ""cat road"" 2 miles in length, connecting the property with the Salmon River Highway. It is estimated that such a road could be built for $5,000 a mile, and supplies, machinery, and concentrates could be haled over it at a cost of less than $2.50 a ton."

"The Floatability Characterisation Test Rig or FCTR is a highly instrumented, mobile flotation pilot plant built by Baker Process (now EIMCO) for the AMIRA P9 Project for use in flotation plant modelling and simulation studies. With the Mintek Floatstar system controlling the level in every cell, and the facility for full stream sampling on all streams, the FCTR is a unique tool for producing data of sufficient quality for flotation plant modelling. The plant was commissioned at Lonmin's Karee and Eastern Platinum concentrators in 1999/2000, and completed a number of test work programs to investigate the effect of power input and regrinding on metallurgical performance. Lonmin's experience with the FCTR has caused it to build two of its own to undertake further projects on its various mines. During the late 1990s Anglo American PLC was evaluating the Gamsberg zinc deposit in the Northern Cape Province. As the primary South African metallurgical technology provider, Mintek became involved in the evaluation of a pyrometallurgical process for the recovery of zinc from the Gamsberg deposit. eloping DC arc furnace technology for the metallurgical industry. This includes the patented Enviroplas® process for the treatment of zinc bearing waste materials. As a consequence Mintek has developed extensive expertise in the pyrometallurgical processing of zinc bearing materials. However, Mintek?s technologies stopped with the production of Prime Western Grade (PWG) zinc. Early on in the evaluation of the Gamsberg project, it became evident that the refining of PWG zinc would play an important part in the economic viability of the project. At the time the only pyrometallurgical technology available for the refining of PWG zinc to Special High Grade (SHG) zinc was the New Jersey process. This process represents 50-year-old technology and has not undergone significant refinement since the technology was developed. In order to provide a complete pyrometallurgical flow sheet for possible implementation at Gamsberg, Mintek assessed the New Jersey process with a view to either improving the technology or developing a new technology appropriate to the 21 century. In 1998 Mintek convened a consortium consisting of Mintek, the University of Cape Town, Eskom Enterprises, Bateman Metals and Anglo American PLC. The consortium successfully applied to the Innovation Fund for funding to develop a new process for the pyrometallurgical refining of PWG zinc to SHG zinc. The main aims of the project were to develop a new technology for pyrometallurgical zinc refining that conformed to the following: ?Decrease the production cost of SHG zinc metal to stimulate the development of the Gamsberg deposit. ?Be compatible with the current Enviroplas® process, preferably as an add-on to that process. ?Should use electrical energy to benefit from local price tariffs. The project commenced at the beginning of 2000 and consisted of three phases: ?an initial technology search and assessment of the fundamental aspects of zinc distillation. ?the design of a pilot plant for zinc refining. ?the manufacture, commissioning and operation of the pilot plant. A new technology based on a DC arc boiler feeding a packed distillation column was developed and during 2003 the project culminated in the successful operation of a 200 kg/h pilot plant. Ultimately, all of the aims of the project were met and the main outcome is that an advanced process for the pyrometallurgical refining of zinc (the Zincref process) has been developed. The main innovation of the technology was the switch from an energy transfer limited process to a mass transfer limited process (for which a patent has been registered).

"Limestone-bearing strata are exposed in seven areas of Alberta, each situated adjacent to rail and road facilities. Six of these centers are located along the eastern edge of the Foothills and Front Ranges of the Rocky Mountains in western Alberta. The other is in northeastern Alberta, along the eastern margin of the Alberta Basin. High-grade limestones are present in Middle Cambrian, Upper Devonian and Mississippian strata. Middle Cambrian (Eldon Formation) limestones have been exploited only in the Exshaw area west of Calgary, where they formerly were used for lime production. Limestone beds of the Upper Devonian Palliser Formation are exploited at Exshaw and at Cadomin in west-central Alberta for the manufacture of cement. Reserves of high-grade limestone also are available in the Palliser Formation near Crowsnest Lake in southwestern Alberta and near BrUle, west of Edmonton. Upper Devonian limestones of the Waterways Formation are widespread in the Fort McMurray area of northeastern Alberta, but available data indicate they are of inferior quality to the limestone deposits of the Rocky Mountains regions. The Mississippian Livingstone Formation contains large reserves of high-grade limestone at several localities in the Rocky Mountains and Foothills. Commercial development of the unit is now underway at Crowsnest Lake and at Exshaw for lime production, and future exploitation of these beds is feasible at Blairmore and Nordegg."

The 2004 Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference contained an air of optimism and excitement that has not been seen since 1997. Many segments of the mining industry are alive and well. This is largely a reflection of improved metal prices, themselves due to the strong euro and improvements in Asian economies. Those factors offset higher oil prices, a weaker U.S. dollar and concerns about the Middle East. This report is an overview of the conference. It is supplemented by an examination of conference handouts, abstracts and a few complete papers that are on the PDAC’s Web site www.pdac.ca. Sixty PDAC 2004 abstracts are available at the same site, along with 15 complete papers in PDF format. The conference was held March 7-10 in Toronto, Ontario. It was attended by a record 9,200 delegates from 85 countries. About 8,000 people from 74 countries attended the 2003 conference.

"This article investigates the complex problem of a budgeting process for a large mining operation. Strict adherence to budget infers that financial results align with goals. In reality, the budget is not a predetermined entity but emerges as the sum of the enterprise’s operational plans. These are highly interdependent, being influenced by unforeseeable events and operational decision-making.Limitations of stochastic simulations, normally applied in the project environment but not in budgeting, are examined and a model enabling their application is proposed. A better understanding of budget failure in large mines emerges, showing that the budget should be viewed as a probability distribution rather than a single deterministic value.The strength of the model application lies with the combining of stochastic simulation, probability theory, financial budgeting, and practical scheduling to predict budget achievement, reflected as a probability distribution. The principal finding is the interpretation of the risk associated with, and constraints pertaining to, the budget.The model utilizes a four-dimensional (space and time) schedule, linking key drivers through activity-based costing to the budget. It offers a highly expressive account of deduction regarding fund application for budget achievement, emphasizing that ’it is better to be approximately right than precisely wrong’."

The low-grade nickel laterite ore used in this study was successfully upgraded through selective reduction by industrialized rotary kilns followed by magnetic separation. The results indicated that both iron metallization extent and nickel metallization extent showed obvious linear correlation. In addition, rational roasting temperature and prolonged grinding time could enhance the overall fineness level of reduced laterite nickel ore. The moderate roasting temperature at a range of 1100–1150 °C should be suitable enough to a conversion of total nickel to metallic nickel and partly inhibited the conversion of total iron. Ultimately, the obtained ferronickel alloy with a nickel content of 7.32% and an iron content of 84.15% was prepared successfully from the lowgrade nickel laterite ore containing a nickel content of 1.92%. Nickel and iron recoveries were 96.72 and 89.08% respectively, which achieved the highly efficient recovery and utilization of iron and nickel from low-grade laterite nickel ore

"Quinsam coal mine is located about 25 km west of Campbell River on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Using continuous miners in a fully mechanized retreat room-and-pillar operation, it produces low sulphur, “super compliance” thermal coal for domestic and international markets at a rate of about 2600 t/d. Currently, 65 people work at the site, including some corporate employees.Opened in 1993, the Quinsam mine had a dismal safety record until 1997. Lost time injuries and medical aids were unacceptably high. In 1998, a change in corporate structure brought a change in safety attitudes; a total and unequivocal commitment to safety as job No.1 by corporate and site management. This commitment was clearly spelled out in a new mission statement, circulated to all employees by the new President and CEO, David Slater: “Safety is job No. 1; Production flows from safety; and Think safety at all times.” As well as re-defining workplace safety practices, QCC tightened engineering controls and enforced strict adherence to mine plans.This paper provides a general background to the mining operation, and describes the safety practices that have resulted in an enviable safety record in recent years, reflected by provincial and national recognition."

X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (XRF) is used at various stages of gold refining. Initially, incoming impure gold is analysed for deleterious elements such as As, Cd, Hg, Se, and Te. Based on the levels of these impurities the material can be returned to the client or accepted for refining. XRF is also used to determine the metal concentrations after the impure gold has been melted and sampled. This information is used to assist the final Fire Assay determination of gold and silver. An energy dispersive XRF is used to determine the end point of chlorination refining step.

"Two analysis tools which have been applied to problems in industrial flotation processes are the application of kinetics and detailed mineralogical or liberation data, both on a size-by-size basis. This paper describes practical examples of the application of kineticsto examination of the entrainment recovery mechanism, the retardation of valuable minerals at the commencement of flotation sections and the resolution of problems related to valuable species with reduced rate constants at the end of sections. Examples of the usefulness of size-by-size liberation data for monthly composite samples of products from a concentrator are also described.IntroductionMuch of the published industrial flotation data on the behaviour of minerals in various size fractions have been obtained from specially conducted surveys with a duration of several hours. Such data are very valuable and provide a record of the behaviour of the entire flotation plant or sections during the interval of the survey. Some examples from the literature can be cited Cameron et al. (1971), Lynch et al. (1981), Frew (1982). Less attention has been given to the value of complementary sized data derived from compositing shift or daily inventory samples over an interval of one or several weeks with repetition of the procedure at the completion of each interval. Mineralogical point count data of the size fractions of such samples and data interpretation are rare in the literature.Kinetic data on the behaviour of valuable and gangue minerals in various size fractions have been reported often for flotation banks. In the experience 0 f the writer, there has been a tendency among operating metallurgists to ascribe problems in the flotation process to rate constant values for gangue minerals which were believed to be unsatisfactorily high. Less attention has been paid to the value for the rate constant for the valuable mineral over the length of a particular bank.Examples of the types of data which were mentioned previously have been obtained from the lead-zinc concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited. The various types of data have been collected to evaluate their worth in order to provide relevant information for both research and operational aspects of the plant."

"The need for spodumene as a source of lithia for war purposes led to the exploitation of the Edison pegmatite deposit 1-1/2 miles southeast of Keystone, S. Dak. The operation was conducted during 1943 and 1944 by the Lor Mining Co., Rapid City, S. Dak. Spodumene concentrates in the ratio of 15:1 were recovered by hand picking from a sorting belt. This method was expensive and wasteful of spodumene, owing to the small size of the crystals.Data4/ obtained by the Bureau of Mines indicates that blunging with hydroflouric acid or sodium hydroxide is a prerequisite to selective flotation. Results of tests by Denver Equipment Co., Denver, Colo., indicate that economic recoveries can be obtained in an alkaline circuit after desliming.At the request of the Lor Mining Co., K. L. Erickson, metallurgical engineer, was permitted to work in the pegmatite research laboratory to verify previous investigations and to determine problems that might be involved in commercial milling. The ensuing investigation indicated that electrolytes in the mill water produced a profound inhibiting action on the flotation of Edison spodumone.An investigation of mill water from various sources showed that some waters are suitable for the process and others are not. Subsequent testing showed that all of the available waters are suitable after treatment. The flotation of the Edison spodumene in an alkaline circuit after desliming and using oleic acid as collector is efficient and economical when the water does not contain impurities.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy.
