The fatigue behavior of AM60 high pressure die casting magnesium alloys was studied in a straincontrolled manner. The fatigue test was interrupted every 2,000 cycles for X-ray tomography scanning. The specimen was removed to be scanned on a desktop micro-CT system. The value of using X-ray tomography in a fatigue properties study was assessed with respect to porosity, cracks and fracture surfaces. The 3D analysis and model results showed porosity could be well measured and modelled in 3D. Defects bands are made of pores under 50 µm in volume-equivalent sphere diameter. Larger pores are randomly distributed in the region between two defect bands. Observation of cracks by X-ray tomography occurs in three ways such that the 3D model gives the best illustration of crack-porosity interaction while the other two methods have better detectability on crack initiation and crack tip observation. X-ray tomography is also of value in failure analysis on fracture surfaces. By summarizing X-ray tomography data during fatigue testing and observing fracture surfaces on a 3D model, a better understanding on the crack initiation, crack-porosity interaction and the morphology of fracture surface is achieved.

"The coal industry is an important part of Canada's economy - as an energy source, employer, and generator of export earnings. Coal comprises 71% of our fossil energy and with rapidly advancing handling and burning technology will clearly play a major role in our national energy mix, eventually as synthetic gases and liquids.International coal markets are very competitive and Canada is disadvantaged by long rail hauls to port, and a heavy tax burden. However, high mine productivity has allowed us to increase our markets.Currently, domestic markets are dominated by coal use for electrical generation, a market with significant growth opportunities.Strong growth is expected in export thermal markets, while metallurgical coal demand is projected to show little or no growth in the medium term. IntroductionThe coal industry is a vital part of the Canadian energy scene .• Coal supplies 17% of Canada's energy.• On a per capita basis, Albertans use more energy in the form of coal than they do oil and gas.• The value of Canada's exports of coal last year was equal in value to all the cars we imported from Japan.• Coal is our largest single export to our seco nd largest trading partner, Japan.• The value of coal produced in Canada exceeds the value of any other single mineral produced in thi s country.• In Alberta, the safety record for coal mines is on a par with that of department store clerks.• The coal industry employs about 25% of the total number of people employed in all metal mines in Canada, directly and indirectly accounting for about 50 000 jobs.Coal comprises 71% of Canada' s hydrocarbon energy resources on a crude oil equivalent basis . This is more than double our oil sands resource and dwarfs our conventional crude oil and gas resources (Fig. I). In the short term, coal as a solid fuel plays a significant part in the Canadian energy scene. In the longer term, coal, in the form of electricity and eventually liquids and gases, has a tremendous role to play. In 1986, Canada produced 57.8 million tonnes, slightly down from the record high of 60.8 million tonnes in 1985. Our exports in 1986 were 26.0 million tonnes, a growth of 53% in three years."

In pelletizing magnetic iron ore concentrates, about 6 to 18 lb of bentonite binder are added per ton of concentrate during balling to give green and dry strengths to the unfired pellets. The dry bentonite is mixed into the filtercake following the magnetic concentration circuit of the plant. The filtercake contains about 10% moisture, and the water may be of highly variable composition, depending on the particular concentration circuit, its source, and the ore being treated. A knowledge of the parameters that influence the balling operation is essential for optimal efficiency in producing balls strong enough to survive the treatment during transportation from the balling device to the furnace and during the firing operation. Furthermore, very weak unfired pellets probably contribute to high dust losses and poor furnace control. The factors that determine the strength of unfired pellets have received considerable study (1,2,3,4). Tigerschiold and Ilmoni(l) pointed out the significance of the surface area of the particles being pelletized. Merklin and Childs(2) reported on the effect of material size consist, chemical additives such as soda ash, lime, balling time, ball size, and the moisture content of green balls. Iwasaki and Zetterstrom(3) examined the detrimental effects of fatty acids on the pelletizing process. Stone(4) correlated the zeta potential of bentonites with the strength of unfired pellets. He found that, in general, a high negative charge on the bentonite is conducive to good balling. Although studies of pelletizing in the iron ore industry deal with a complex multicomponent system consisting mainly of the iron mineral, bentonite, and water, the last of these has received little attention, particularly with regard to the possible effects of mill water chemistry on the pelletizing process and the strength of unfired pellets. It is widely known that the composition of mill process water is an important variable in unit operations such as flotation, thickening, and filtering and that impure water can lead to poor metallurgical results. The results of the present study indicate that the chemistry of the mill water may be an important variable in the balling operation as well. Knowledge about this variable should contribute to lowering bentonite and oil consumption and to improving furnace performance. Such knowledge can also assist those who use balling in evaluating commercial bentonites for plant use as well as those investigating balling from a more fundamental point of view In this study we have examined 1) the effects of replacing mill process water in the magnetic concentrate filtercake with pure water, and 2) the effects of several chemical impurities that are commonly found in mill process waters upon the strength of unfired pellets. The results are interpreted in terms of the zeta potential of the bentonite and magnetite particles. The data lend support to a suggested mechanism whereby the electrostatic attraction of oppositely charged particle surfaces causes bentonite-bentonite and magnetite-bentonite bonding. This mechanism would also explain why several chemical additives e.g., sodium carbonates and phosphates, have such marked effects on increasing the strength of unfired pellets.

This paper outlines the design, justification and performance of a gravity circuit upgrade at the Marvel Loch treatment plant. The design of the upgrade was simple but effective. The key components of the upgrade were the addition of a sluice and a second Knelson Concentrator. The sluice was installed as a pre-concentration step. The upgrade also included the purchase of a Mineral Cone to treat the increased quantity of gravity concentrate. The cost was low because of the use of mostly second-hand equipment. The result was that for a cost of $75 000 the gravity recovery doubled and the overall recovery increased by over one per cent. This paper shows that you do not need to spend millions of dollars to be innovative and successful.

For any resource evaluation program, the collection and processing of representative samples for assaying is critical. Sampling, sample preparation and assay protocols must be designed to suit the style of orebody in question. The a priori need is for the characterisation of mineralisation type(s) and domain definition. The proportion and size of gold particles has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling protocols employed. Mineralogical studies focusing on gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required. Key issues are the presence of gold particle clustering and proportion of coarse versus fine gold. High-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) is a radiographic technique that produces high-resolution 3D computerised models of in situ objects based on density distribution. The ævirtualÆ specimens are made up of voxels, the 3D equivalent of pixels each assigned a grey value based on X-ray absorption. This paper presents the results of recent research on the imaging of in situ particles in coarse gold-bearing ore samples from the Nalunaq mine, southern Greenland. The samples used were previously well-characterised through mineralogical and metallurgical testing, and serve to test the HRXCT methodology. The financing of large mining projects in developing countries is often achieved, at least in part, by limited-recourse financing methods. Financing agreements are affected by the basic accord that is struck between the host government and the sponsors of the project. It is concluded that governments and project sponsors should take into account the requirements of lenders when structuring such mineral development agreements to maximise the potential for attracting project financing. Lenders are likely to be most interested in aspects such as fiscal arrangements, calculation of taxable income and general accounting rules, royalties, transferability of payments/dividends overseas, corporate structure and control, staged development, financing, loan support and state guarantees/approvals, political risk, provisions for default, product marketing, settlement of disputes and environmental issues

Mini-piles have been found to be a practical, technically correct remedial underpinning method. They can be constructed in limited access areas with very little disruption. Experience indicated that mini-piles installed using a down-the-hole soil displacement hammer would be particularly effective in the "bottomless" Beaumont Clay formations in the Houston, Texas, U.S.A. area. The University of Houston Foundation Testing Facility was ideally suited to perform tests on mini-piles. The availability of extensive geotechnical data and previous pile test results was invaluable in evaluating the mini-pile test data. As expected, the mini-pile test results were consistant with test results from large sized driven piles in the same soil formation.

The existing Tappan Zee Bridge was built in the late 1950s and has been working over its design traffic load for some time now. A new project, which is being jointly sponsored by the New York State Thruway Authority and Metro-North Rail Road, is looking at new alternatives to provide new road and rail crossings of the Hudson River. These include 2 to 5 mile and potentially longer tunnel crossing options that include hardrock TBM and EPBM opportunities. The paper describes the project needs and tunnel concept design work done on some of the alternatives. It also relates to the current EIS process for the project and talks about a possible double-stacked tunnel option. It also talks about the geology and environmental constraints relating to tunneling and provides and introduction to the tunnel ventilation work necessary for tunnel crossing of this magnitude. It does not report on the bridge engineering options being evaluated.

A study of a static demolition agent that can be used underwater has been carried out. A new type of granulated static demolition agent with rapid reaction has been tested in several hundred experiments. It can be used conveniently and simply in the field. It demonstrates a fast reaction rate with high expansion pressures. The important characteristic of the new type of granulated static demolition agent is the ability to function underwater. It will destroy rock and the other brittle material without flyrock, vibration, shock wave, toxic gas or noise. The reaction rate can be controlled within 30-60 minutes. It is difficult to use these products when the reaction rate is less than 30 minutes and it is less efficient when the reaction rate is longer than 60 minutes. The reaction rate is slightly increased after the material is kept in storage for two years. A new type of the hydraulic device that is used to measure the expansion pressure of solid materials has been designed. The expansion pressure of the granulated static demolition agent has been tested with the device. It is shows that the expansion pressure of the granulated static demolition agent can get to 80~120MPa in 60 minutes. Also included is a discussion of the thermodynamics of the static demolition agent.

"This paper presents the design and angular strength analysis of microneedles for use as a transdermal interface for drug delivery, fluid analysis and sampling etc. Microneedles of different dimensions were designed and fabricated using various materials viz. Si02, OxideNitride- Oxide (O-N-0). The design, modeling and analysis was done using the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software ANSYS™ 6.1. Angular strength analysis of the microneedles was done using angular loading in ANSYS™, with the corresponding inaterial property settings. Using the force-displacement settings, forces of magnitudes in the range of 10 mN - 25 mN were applied on the microneedles at loading angles ranging from 30° to 90° was applied on needles. Square and circular shaped microneedles were modeled and the displacements and stresses generated were studied to characterize the angular strength of the microneedles. The buckling and force-displacement analyses show that O-N-O microneedles are more strong and robust as compared to needles of other materials. The analysis shows that while circular microneedles have uniform stress distribution, square microneedles have low stresses concentrated along the edges.INTRODUCTIONIn modem clinical and biomedical applications, drug delivery is done either by oral administration or by hypodermic injection. Hypodermic injection of drugs using needles is often painful. Hence, transdermal drug delivery techniques are increasingly being sought out as an alternative. In transdermal drug delivery the needles puncture the Stratum comeurn - the outermost layer of the human skin. The advantage of transdermal drug delivery (or transdermal measurement) technique, is that it reduces pain and tissue trauma."

An outstanding example of this is the recently approved Federal-Provincial Aeromagnetic Survey Plan, the purpose of which is discussed both from an economic and a scientific point of view. Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) operations continue to grow across sub-Saharan Africa and serve as a source of livelihood to many rural communities. Owing to safety, health, environmental, and social concerns, the occupation has been regarded as a menace in several sub-Sahara African countries. Recent studies in the field of ASM prescribe formalization as a way to tame its excesses while enhancing its potential. This paper explores the concept of formalization as it relates to ASM and how it is being affected by the funding situation. The paper seeks to address the question as to whether formalization of artisanal mining operations can achieve the desired results in view of the lingering credit constraints in this mining subsector. It is recommended that, as a way of extending the scope of formalization, focus should be placed not only on access to credit in ASM but also towards optimizing the creditworthiness of ASM firms, with the goal of improving the viability of the operations.

"In modem concentrators, the operation of flotation machines is often stabilized by simple control loops. Froth level, slurry density and aeration rate are all physical parameters typically controlled through classical PID loops. Few concentrators, however make use of advanced computing technologies for controlling the grade of flotation product streams. Technical challenges such as long process delay and the long and uneven sampling interval of on-stream XRF analyzers often restrain their implementation. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is known to have better performance than PID for controlling processes with long delays (such as flotation circuits). This paper describes the implementation of a multi-input/single-output (MISO) MPC algorithm and an FIR model identification routine using an object-oriented graphical computing environment.The MPC module (controller and identification) was implemented on an industrial control system and applied to many sulfide flotation circuits in the Brunswick Mining concentrator (New Brunswick, Canada). In most cases, the manipulated variable was the collector addition. As long as it is provided with decent process models, the performance of the MPC controller is good on all the flotation circuits on which it was applied. Significant reductions of grade variance are reported and the controller responds well to set-point changes. The user-friendly, graphical nature of the computing environment led to a high degree of acceptance by both the process engineers and the flotation operators.1. INTRODUCTIONOver the past three decades, much instrumentation has been developed for flotation machines. The introduction of instruments such as pulp density gauges and cell level probes was particularly well received by the plants where pneumatic and electronic controllers were available for implementing PID control loops. In a way, these simple loops revolutionized the mineral industry. The operation of flotation circuits could then be stabilized through the use of automatic controllers."

This paper describes developments in ferro-nickel furnace technology, specifically improvements to cooling methods, furnace controls, and high voltage furnace operating regime. The evolution of these technologies is briefly presented, as context for describing the current state of the art that has enabled ferro-nickel furnace operation at over 75 MW and specific energy consumption of less than 400 kWh/t dry ore. Examples from existing operations are used to illustrate present best practices, and potential future trends are discussed. The paper begins with an overview of the fundamental aspects of pyrometallurgical treatment of lateritic ores that drive ferro-nickel furnace design. Furnace wall cooling methods are related to the requirements resulting from specific furnace process conditions, including slag and metal compositions, as well as arc and bath power. The benefits of high productivity and low specific energy consumption resulting from high voltage (shielded-arc) operating practice are discussed, along with the furnace controls and electrical power train that enable such operation even with captive power generation.

"Geometallurgical programs require the collection of representative samples for geochemical, mineralogical and metallurgical test work. Such protocols must be designed to suit the style of orebody in question. The distribution, proportion and size of gold particles have a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling and test work protocols, and the gold recovery processes employed. Characterisation studies focusing on ore mineralogy, and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required. High resolution X-ray computed tomography provides a non-destructive method for analysing the 3D nature of gold in rock samples. It can be used to calculate the modal abundance, particle size and distribution of gold in the sample volume. This paper presents a case study of the imaging of in situ gold particles in a high-grade gold ore. The Nick O’Time reef system comprises laminated quartz veins, which locally bear extreme grades of up to 100 oz/t gold. The mineralisation has previously been characterised from both a mineralogical and metallurgical perspective. Eight visible gold-bearing vein samples were scanned using X-ray microtomography. Rich Hill, also known as Weaver District No. 2, is among the most productive placer gold locations in Arizona. Located near Congress, AZ (Fig. 1), this district hosted major placer rushes in the 1860s and1930s. Those rushes were followed by an electronic metal detecting rush that started in the 1980s and continues today. Thousands of ounces of gold have been produced by these modern amateur and professional metal detectorists. Many of them see more gold in an afternoon than Nevada mine workers will ever see outside of the mill. Rich Hill discovery Inspired northeastward by Spanish legends, a party of 10 men left Yuma, AZ on April 1, 1863. Included in the group were Pauline Weaver (Fig. 2), Henry Wickenburg and Abraham Peeples. Wickenburg left the group near the Hassayampa River and discovered the Vulture deposit. The rest of the group arrived at the base of Rich Hill in late May. While drying antelope meat on the first day, a few of the men prospected a nearby creek bed and immediately found gold. In a couple of hours they picked up more than 2.8 kg (90 oz) of gold. The next day, four members of the party went searching for their horses and returned with news that a nearby hilltop was literally graveled with nuggets.

"The Echo Bay Mines silver property is located 875 air miles north of Edmonton, Alberta. The mine is on the east shore of Great Bear Lake at Port Radium which is twenty six miles south of the artic circle, in the North West Territories.HISTORYThe area was first surveyed by J. Mackintosh Bell of the Geological Survey of Canada in the early nineteen hundreds. In May 1930, Gilbert LaBine staked claims at Port Radium called ""Cobalt"" and ""Cobalt I"". What he had discovered was an extremely rich vein of pitch-blend. These claims were the birth of mining in this area. The first ore shipment of pitch-blend was hand-picked and flown out of Port Radium in 1931. LaBine's discovery of pitch-blend became of world-wide importance with the outbreak of World War II. In 1939 the splitting of the uranium atom brought this area into world focus. It is generally believed that it was ore from this area that was used in the production of the devastating bombs which were dropped on Japan.It was at Port Radium that the leaching process for uranium extraction was pioneered. The resultant methods have been modified and adopted for use around the world. The mine was originally owned by Eldorado Gold Mines Limited. Echo Bay Mines leased the property in 1964, subsequently purchased it, and have been producing silver and copper every since."

Many articles have been written about the various operations of Britannia mines and mill, as well as treatises on the geology and ore deposits. A partial list of these papers is given below. Most of these papers have covered well the history of Britannia, and have included a thorough discussion of the geology and ore deposits; therefore, in this paper, no account of these subjects. is necessary. However, a short description of the ore deposits will be given as an aid to a clear understanding of the descriptions of the various mining methods. The Ore Deposits The ore deposits at Britannia occur along a shear zone and are five in number, named for the claims in which they lie, as follows: Jane, Bluff, Fairview, Empress, and Victoria. Each of these deposits is called a mine, as they are separated by 500 to 1,000 feet of barren ground. The Jane mine, although the first producer of the Britannia group, has not been in operation for a number of years. The deposit is a silicified replacement in sediments; with very little evidence of shearing. The Bluff deposit is a highly silicified replacement in porphyry, massive and irregular, very hard in the upper 600 feet with practically no shearing, and softer within chlorite schist in its lower 1,000 feet . The Fairview deposit consists of a series of twelve distinct veins or lodes, rather lenticular in shape, and occasionally merging.

"TEXADA Island is situated in the Strait of Georgia, about 100 miles northwest of Vancouver. The property of Texada Mines Ltd. lies on the southwest coast of the northern end of the Island. A part of the ""Sunshine Coast,"" the climate is moderate, with about 30 inches of rain during winter months and relatively dry summers. Texada has been shipping high-grade magnetite concentrate continuously since 1952 to Japanese ore buyers. In 1959, a 3,000-foot tunnel was driven just above sea level to explore the possible downward extension of known orebodies then being mined by open pit. In January of 1961, because the open-pit operations had a limited life, C. C. Huston and Associates were brought in as mining consultants to do a feasibility study on the possibility of going underground for production. This study was completed in March, 1961. With the completion of the report, the Company went to Japan seeking a ,long-term contract to justify the capital outlay necessary for setting up an underground operation. Concurrently, underground diamond drilling revealed more ore, and the Company planned some modifications to the concentrator for increasing the copper recovery. By November, 1961, a ten-year contract was signed with Japanese ore buyers for the sale of 450,-000 long tons of concentrates beginning in October, 1963. Since that time, the Company has built its own 65 000-ton ore carrier and an additional three-year contract has been negotiated, with an annual tonnage increase of from 450,000 to 550,000 tons."
