City of Manchester, NH, is implementing a 20-year plan to control and significantly reduce overflow of its sewer system. The long-term control plan had called for large scale box culvert installation through downtown Manchester. The City and the project team evaluated, and eventually selected, tunneling as an alternative to mitigate construction related impacts for open trench approach. This paper provides an overview of the alternative evaluation process; discusses the development of the preliminary design for the 12,000 feet long, 12-ft internal diameter tunnel, including plan and profile selection, subsurface conditions, drop shafts and the anticipated packaging of the separation areas.

In common with general experience in the iron-making industry overseas, Australia has in recent years suffered a deterioration in the physical quality of her iron ores in their suitability as a direct blast furnace feed. The increasing amounts of fines and the more friable nature of lump ore, especially in the ore from the Cockatoo Island deposits in Yampi Sound, Western Australia, have focused attention on problems of ore preparation and agglomeration, particularly sintering.Although very small pilot scale Dwight-Lloyd type sinter machines were operated at the steel-making centres at Newcastle and Port Kembla during World War II, no sizeable capacity was installed, so that ore was charged to the blast furnaces almost entirely unscreened, and the resultant flue dust was stockpiled.Towards the close of the war, the pilot plant at Newcastle was replaced by a small machine, adjacent to the flue dust stockpile, with a rated capacity of some 20 tons per hour. After approximately five months of part-time operation, this plant was closed down in January, 1945. Production was not resumed until December, 1950, when, due to a temporary ore shortage, it was decided to supplement available ore with sinter produced from the large flue dust stocks of about 300,000 tons. In spite of mechanical and process difficulties, inherent to the design of the plant, operation was continued on a two-shift basis, with several shutdowns for extensive overhaul and plant alterations, until September, 1954, when production was put on a three-shift basis. Under the seventh 5-year plan (1986-90), the Chinese Government continued to implement reform and to open the country further to the outside world in order to accelerate the growth of its national economy. As a result of expanded foreign economic exchanges and domestic achievements in education, science and technology, and cultural and public health undertakings, the national economy was strengthened. In 1988, there was impressive growth in the Chinese economy. The gross national product (GNP) grew by 11.2070 reaching $373.4 billion; 2 the national income grew by 11.4070 to $310.9 billion. The major problem in the Chinese economy was the imbalance between high demand and insufficient supply. Chronic shortages resulted in price increases and high inflation, which averaged 19% for China as a whole and about 30% in urban areas. Macroeconomic stability took precedence over market-oriented reform initiative. Because of rapidly growing inflation, the Government re-imposed price controls and rationing in major cities in the fall of 1988. China continued to be a major world producer of minerals, metals, and fuels. Output of the principal commodities continued to rise. The largest in-crease in production was salt which rose 24% in output in 1988; followed by sulfuric acid, 14%; cement, 12%; soda ash, 9%; caustic soda, 7%; and steel, 6%. For fossil fuels, the increase in output of natural gas was 14% in 1988; followed by coal, 3%; and crude oil, 2%. The output of electricity by thermal-fired powerplants rose by 9% while that for hydroelectric power-plants rose 7%. Although China's overall energy output has increased annually since 1980, the growth in demand continued to outstrip the supply.

"This article is devoted to the introduction of a new technique of electrical resistivity data processing called residual resistivity (RR). We define RR as measured resistivity minus background resistivity. To determine the background resistivity, the data acquired from electrical resistivity measurements along a given survey line is evaluated, and then an equation is fitted to the data corresponding to a chosen measurement station as a function of current electrode spacing (or array length). The RR technique was applied to several synthetic models to compare the conventional resistivity inversion of each model with its RR-based inversion. A case study was carried out in a karstic area in Zarrinabad, Lorestan Province, western Iran, to detect the location and geometry of probable cavities by conventional resistivity inversion and RR-based inversion. The results showed that the anomalous zones are better highlighted in the RR-based inversion images in comparison with the conventional inversion images. In some cases, anomalies detected by the RR-based images were hidden in the conventional method. IntroductionThe geoelectrical resistivity method has been widely used since the early 20th century, and plays an important role in several fields such as groundwater and subsurface mineral exploration, geotechnical and environmental investigations, and archeological studies (Bayrak and Senel, 2012; Candansayar and Basokur, 2001; Fehdi et al., 2011; Hee et al., 2010; Osella et al., 2003; Wilkinson et al., 2010). The goal of geoelectrical resistivity surveys is to determine the distribution of subsurface resistivity by measuring the current-potential difference on the ground surface (Aizebeokhai et al., 2010). In the electrical resistivity method, an electrical current is injected into the ground by two electrodes, called current electrodes (AB), and the potential difference is measured between another pair of electrodes, the potential electrodes (MN). Several methods of interpretation are available for application to electrical resistivity data, the simplest being the graphical interpretation of the apparent electrical resistivity pseudo-sections along each survey line. A second method, electrical resistivity inversion, has been developed to create relatively accurate two- and threedimensional computational resistivity models of subsurface sections (Loke and Barker, 1996; Niwas and Mehrotra, 1997; Nordiana et al., 2014; Oldenburg and Li, 1994; Papadopoulos et al., 2009; Yilmaz and Narman, 2014). In the inversion method, models of subsurface objectives are mathematically inverted to reach optimal solutions subject to prescribed objective functions, constrains, and convergence criteria. A common problem when using the electrical resistivity inversion method is that the inversion model of an electrical resistivity profile may be non-unique because different inhomogeneities in the investigation media can result in the same electrical response (Smith and Vozzof, 1984)."

The recent upswing in mining coincided with increased environmental concern. These trends have significantly increased regulation, but have not always provided sound environmental protection. Throughout, mining has remained passive, reacting to initiatives from outside. The high road to environmental protection must be an active strategy. The mining industry must take the lead and develop an environmental program effective in price and protection. It must involve all levels of mining. The mining industry should be the real environmental activist. We have the most to gain by sound environmental protection and the most to lose if the environment decays.

[The ventilation of development faces in mines for diluting gas or dust concentrations aid in hot mines for providing air-motion cooling affect, by fan-pipe units discharging high-velocity streams of air close to the face, is an important phase of mitre ventilation. The effectiveness of such units depends largely on the air-flow distribution between-the pipe discharge said the face, a subject on which little definite information is available. A study of the air, flow from grills into rooms3/ has provided sore basic data, but under conditions so different from mine fan-pipe installations in development ends that tae data to are of doubtful application to mine installa¬tions, owing to differences in air-flow conditions. The purposes of this report is to present and discuss the results of an initial series of tests of a general investigation designed to yield definite laws and design data for the discharge of fan-pine lines in nines. The s series was planned to yield preliminary data on the effects of velocity of discharge, size and shape of tripe, and adjacent calls on the air-flow distribution. Tents were made on 10-inch pine with seven different end conditions and one change of wall condition. Changes in size and shape of discharge wore made b y short transformation pieces directly at the discharge end, with the result that effects due to contraction and expansion of the flow, which proved to be of much greater importance than was expected, totally obscured any normal effects cue to size anti shape. The results of this series of tests, therefore, relate to 10-inch pipe with various discharge designs is and ago se reported.]

This report presents the results of a statistical analysis of a limited amount of sample and assay data from a production panel in an open - pit phosphate mine in the Phosphoria formation in Idaho . A frequency distribution analysis is shown for the assays , sample interval lengths , and products of assay and sample interval length for the millshale , furnace - shale , and main phosphate beds . Correlation techniques were used to show the relationships between assays and sample interval lengths . Within- drill - hole and between - drill - hole correlation were also examined as a means of predicting grade trends in the ore . Simulation methods , utilizing a digital computer , were used to establish assay populations that could be used for estimating grade of ore , cutoff grades , and deposit or bed identification .

"The world production of crude steel in 2009 reached 1.2 billion tons. For each ton of steel produced, 150 kg of steelmaking slag and 20 kg of steelmaking dust are generated. These are wastes with considerable production and limited applications, therefore this work studied the recovery of these wastes into useful sub-products. The slag was used as raw material in the production of rock wool (a thermo-acoustic insulator) and the dust was inserted in the iron ore sintering process. Results showed that produced materials have exceptional proprieties, therefore the recovery of these wastes can contribute to decrease extraction of non-renewable resources, reduce the costs and impact of disposals, and aggregate value to the slag and dust.1. IN discussing stope filling, or backfilling, at the Sullivan mine, at Kimberley, B.C., a brief description of the problem will first be presented. The Sullivan orebody is a replacement in quartzite, with the ore con-forming, for the most part, with the bedding. The dip of the vein, apart from local irregularities, averages about 15 degrees near the outcrop in the southwest section of the mine, and steepens to almost 40 degrees at the northeast end of the mine. The thickness varies from a few feet to over 200 feet at the widest sections. The mineable length along the strike has averaged about 4,000 feet between the 4,600 and 3,900 levels-the section under discussion in this paper. To date, 28,000,000 tons of ore have been mined by the room-and-pillar method. Prior to 1930, all ground opened up had been supported by ore pillars, left during mining operations. From that time, the recovery of the ore from these pillars has been given serious consideration. Backfilling, as being carried on today, is the result of this study and is being done for two reasons: (1) to allow extraction of the ore pillars, and (2) to minimize subsidence of the hanging-wall rock, except where forced caving is found desirable. PRELIMINARY DEVELOPMENTS LEADING TO BACKFILLING When the Sullivan orebody was first opened up, early in the century, there appeared to be low-grade sections of the vein sufficient in extent to serve as permanent support for the roof. However, as mining extended into sections of the vein that showed continuous ore over greater areas, wooden cribs, filled with waste and low-grade ore, were erected. In some stopes, these cribs were as large as 40 ft. by 100 ft. in plan and from 50 ft. to 60 ft. in height, but it was soon realized that this method of support was inadequate. As mining progressed, it was found necessary to leave ore pillars, which eventually became the sole system of support. At first, these pillars were left at irregular intervals, but later they were laid out at definite locations on the mine plans, and these locations were adhered to as closely as mining would permit.

WHEN I first received the kind invitation extended to me by the Mining Society of Nova Scotia, I read over very carefully the suggested title-"The importance of long-distance planning and budgetting in modern methods of mining, and the advisability of working to some definite plan". I came to the conclusion that I might as well confess my inability to handle properly such a vast and intricate subject within the scope of any one paper. More properly, I think a round-table discussion should be indulged in-a sort' of symposium carried on in similar fashion to the World Power and Coal Conferences- you know, a committee for this, a committee for that, and, finally, a committee to see what the committees are doing. Weil, your Secretary's suggestion is just like that- much too comprehensive for any half-hour's presentation. As a paper, also, it either becomes too general and therefore uninteresting, or i.t descends into detail and describes means and methods to the end desired, which have little attraction because they were designed to meet quite different conditions than those my audience would mentally be considering. Of the two evils facing me, I have chosen the one that sticks to the generalities. Your Secretary's query almost automatically divides itself into two distinct phases: First, the importance, and second, the advisability, of planning. Let us dwell for the moment on the second, because, if we can prove advisability, that leads to desirability and, finally, to doing. Proving is the difficult part of the little problem. Here was something I, personally and as a mining engineer, had been battling for all my corporate life without being able to prove it to anybody. Then I saw the way out of that. I perceived I could put that little question of advisability on another basis altogether-:put it in the class of "coming- some day- soon" whether you or l or anybody else liked it or not; call it, if you please, mandatory, certain, necessary, enforceable planning. All of which means that the problem of advisability has rather suddenly become the very practical one of "how to do it". Why?

"Delft University of Technology, RWTH Aachen, Helsinki University of Technology and Imperial College established the Federation of European Mineral Programs (FEMP) in 1999 as a legal body to coordinate joint M.Sc. education.By 2003 the number of participating universities in Europe has grown to 9 (in 7 countries) offering 3 different M.Sc. joint programs. Furthermore students from 8 universities in the USA, Canada, Australia and Chile participate through exchange agreements. About 25 companies are associated with FEMP. Further expansion with other clusters of universities is being investigated.So far some 160 students have taken the programs and are working in all parts of the world in a variety of jobs.The European Commission has recently announced the new “Erasmus World” program that will stimulate the offering of joint programs by European universities and offer third-country students and teachers a greater opportunity for mobility and an enhanced European added value. Host European postgraduate courses will be selected for a five-year period. They will receive funding from the Community and a “EU” seal. Around 250 “EU Masters Courses” will be established.The envisaged new Erasmus program and it’s network and operating practices are very similar to those being used by EMC, EMEC and EGEC. Erasmus World therefore offers a great opportunity for further developments with FEMP as the official body.INTRODUCTIONThe current situation in Europe is that globalisation of the supply of mineral resources has caused the larger mining and the manufacturing companies to expand and invest particularly outside Europe. However these industries still have a great significance for the European Union and its members, which means that mineral engineering know-how is still important in the E.U. It was therefore realised in the mid-nineties that is vital to maintain the very high level of knowledge and skill base in mining engineering and mineral technology that currently exists in the E.U., through good and well-balanced education programs."

The growing popularity of platinum and platinum group metals (or PGMs, including palladium, rhodium and others) for a wide range of applications leads to some interesting issues for mining and sustainability. The uses for PGMs includes catalytic converters for air pollution control in vehicles, growing jewellery use, catalysts for various purposes (especially petroleum and chemicals processing), hydrogen fuel cells and many others. Given the growing importance of most of these PGM uses in more sustainable technologies or in making industrial processes more efficient, it is critical to understand the complex sustainability issues which surround platinum and PGMs. At present, South Africa is the dominant PGMs producer and holds about 88 per cent of estimated global resources, with important but relatively minor production and resources in Zimbabwe, Russia, Canada and the United States. Given the concentrated location of PGM resources, what are the likely trends in PGM mining with respect to environmental sustainability? That is, what are the costs in terms of energy, pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, water, land use impacts, social impacts, economic aspects associated with this globally important industry? This paper compiles and analyses a range of data on platinum-PGM mining, focusing primarily on South Africa. It synthesises a unique combination of data which relates typical production aspects such as ore grade and scale with sustainability aspects such as greenhouse, energy and water costs. The findings are critical in understanding the debate about the increasing environmental and social costs of some materials and technologies which are considered crucial for sustainable industries based on PGMs. Overall, the paper represents a valuable insight into the platinum-PGM sector, providing a range of useful data for understanding the environmental sustainability of this particular group of precious metals.

Although for many years considerable attention has been given to devising safe and efficient methods of using explosives, with some success, relatively little has been done to provide satisfactory storage facilities for them. This was known long before the present war began, but it was emphasized during the past 30 months? inspections of explosive magazines by employees of the Bureau of Mines in administration of the Federal Explosives Act of December 26, 1941. These inspections have revealed woeful in adequacy as well as definite hazards and the urgent need for obtaining better storage facilities either by remodeling old magazines or constructing ink new ones that would afford suitable protection for the contents against theft, fire, deterioration, and detonation. The purpose of this paper is to offer suggestions and to show by sketches and drawings some of the fundamental features of suitable magazines. Type of construction and available materials differ with different; localities, but the information herein contained can be applied to most magazines, whether already constructed or the construct: on of which is planned. It is hoped that this information will be helpful and will aid persons who are trying to provide suitable storage for explosives end detonators. It is also hoped that States and cities will be made aware of the unbelievable laxity practiced in storing explosives in the United States and will take some remedial action.

During the present study of lubricating oils in the San Francisco laboratory of the Bureau of mines it became desirable to distill oils used in the experimental work at pressures as low as 10 mm., (mercury column) absolute. In the effort to overcome difficulties and eliminate sources of error the apparatus described below was finally developed. The distilling flask is essentially the Hempel flask used by the Bureau of Mines for the analytical distillation of petroleum3. The complete apparatus is shown in Figure 1. As air leakage at connections is an ever present or potential source of difficulty and error in vacuum apparatus, the, mouth of the flask is drawn down to one cm. internal diameter which materially simplifies obtaining an air-tight seal at this point. Before reducing the mouth, the spray screen is inserted and adjusted in position.

Traditionally, iron ore has been reduced with coke in a blast furnace and the hot-metal product of the blast furnace containing carbon, manganese, silicon, sulphur and phosphorous, was subsequently refined in a steelmaking furnace. During iron making as well as during steelmaking, significant amounts of slag are produced. Two decades ago, more than 13 m tonne of blast furnace slag and 4 m tonne of steelmaking slag per annum were produced in the USA alone. It is, therefore, not surprising that many attempts have been made to re-use iron and steelmaking slags. However, these slags are not merely metallurgical waste products but, on the contrary, their compositions and physical properties are judiciously designed to optimize the operations in the respective metallurgical reactors. The variation in composition and properties of blast furnaces lags are largely determined by the gangue in the ore and ash in the coke and much progress has been made in the re-use of such slag. With respect to steelmaking slag, emphasis has in recent years been placed on hot-metal treatment before refining and ladle treatment after decarburization. The bulk removal of silicon, phosphorous and sulphur from the hot-metal product of the blast furnace by specially designed slags prior to refining in a basic oxygen furnace, has reduced tap-to-tap time, lowered cost and produced steel of much higher quality. The use of synthetic slags in ladle refining techniques subsequent to decarburization in the basic oxygen furnace has resulted in reduced hydrogen and nitrogen contents and reduced solute impurities. Moreover, inclusion shape and composition control, again by the use of specially designed slags has led to the achievement of much improved mechanical properties of the steel. In these revised process routes, slag of different compositions are produced in the variety of unit processes and hence the re-use of steelmaking slags has become much more complex. Clearly, a thorough understanding of the design and use of these different slags is a pre-requisite to the development of re-use strategies. Japanese steelmakers have spearheaded attempts to reduce slag volumes in the individual unit processes and to strive towards ‘slagless steelmaking’ by recycling slags internally. Steelmaking slag volumes have been reduced on commercial scale from about 140 kg/tonne steel to 60kg/tonne steel. Moreover, model predictions have shown that, in principle, all slag can be recycled and the phosphorous extracted to produce fertilizer. Much of the coal and gold mining industry of New Zealand is small scale. Funding is tight and mechanisation limited. The country has many well documented small coalfields (some with significant outcropping) and alluvial gold deposits. These are generally remote, difficult to access (physically and otherwise) and of submarginal value (largely a consequence of size when viewed for extraction by traditional techniques). The industry is also burdened by environmental and bureaucratic constraints. The above over simplified setting suggests to the Author, a newcomer to New Zealand, the opportunity to consider some novel concepts based on technology and techniques developed overseas or borrowed from other industry sectors. The objective being to make viable in economic and environmental terms projects that might otherwise be stillborn if considered for exploitation by conventional means. The paper mainly discusses 2 concepts focusing on the application of augers for exposed high wall or outcrop coal and micro-tunnelling augers for alluvial gold extraction. These may be considered high mobility 'container' (as in shipping container) packaged, or 'non invasive' mining systems. It is stressed that these are but concepts and have yet to be subjected to rigorous financial or engineering scrutiny. This could only follow their acceptance by, and input from, New Zealand miners. There will also be brief mention of a new modular conveyor system which might have application within the concepts or existing small scale mineral extraction operations and mention of a project currently in progress to apply tangible 'sustainability' to underground coal mining.

"A precise analysis of the noise emitted by an aluminum plant has shown that one of the main sources of noise is the noise emitted by an exhaust stack 40 m high and 1.8 m diametre, emitting a pure tone at 320 Hz. Because a classical cost effective solution is not available for this source, active noise control (ANC) solution was investigated.Commonly available ANC systems, how-ever, are not applicable to the chimney considered because the diameter of the stack (f) is too important compared to the wave length(?)of the frequency to control. In fact, until now, active noise control (ANC) has been successfully used to reduce the acoustical energy emitted at the end of ducts in the case of plane wave propagation, i.e. ?/f< 1.7 [1,4].When f> ?/1.7, high order modes propagate in the duct and a single canal active noise control system is not sufficient.This paper presents an ANC system developed to control higher modes in a circular duct. The controller used is based on a multiple-input, multiple-output adaptive filtered X-LMS and allows up to 11 error micro-phones and controls sources. The system has been used in a laboratory on a finite duct of3.5 m long and 0.30 m diameter which corresponds to the same ratio ?/f for the real stack. The efficiency of the system with different numbers and location of control sources and errors sensors has been analyzed. Noise reduction of 15 dB(A) could be obtained with some configurations. Actually, the system is being considered for installation on the real chimney stack."

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Watershed tungsten deposit is located in the Hodgkinson Province of north Queensland, Australia. The deposit is hosted by Siluro-Devonian flysch-type meta-sediments of the Hodgkinson Formation, which were subjected to four major deformation events. Mineralisation has occurred syn- to post-D4 and is related to the intrusion of S-type granitoids of the Permian Whypalla Supersuite.Watershed is located within a regional NW–SE-striking melange zone composed of brecciated and intermixed arenites and shales. The major NW–SE-striking Tullah fault zone is situated in close proximity to the east of the deposit.The Watershed deposit occurs within a tightly folded upright anticline with NW-plunging fold axis. The anticline contains a major package of coarse-grained to conglomeratic arenite, which harbours the Watershed mineralisation. Several alteration styles occur within the arenites, of which Fe-poor calc-silicate alteration dominated by clinozoisite/epidote is the most significant. Less widespread but locally important alteration styles comprise garnet-dominated calc-silicate alteration, albitisation and sericitisation. The arenites are enveloped by unmineralised carbonaceous shales and shale breccias.Tungsten mineralisation occurs solely as molybdenum-poor scheelite and can be found as three styles: disseminated mineralisation in calc-silicate altered arenites, vein-style mineralisation with quartz-albite-scheelite veins and minor but high-grade mineralisation in albitised felsic dykes.Contact metamorphic rocks and geophysical data indicate the proximity of an underlying granitic body. It is believed that this granitic body was the main driver of the hydrothermal system generating the Watershed deposit. An early mineralisation stage caused the selective calc-silicate alteration of the arenites, while a second stage caused the vein-style high-grade mineralisation. The folded shales enveloping the arenites worked as an effective barrier that kept the mineralising fluids in a confined rock volume.The scheelite mineralisation at Watershed is open to depth, with a granite-hosted porphyry or greisen-style mineralisation anticipated below the current resource.CITATION:Griessmann, M and Williamson, J, 2015. Ten stations were covered; 25 other stations had been occupied in the vicinity of Rome and in Albanian mountains during previous years. The new measurements revealed gravity anomalies ranging within the following limits: (1) With a free-air reduction, between + 29 and + 120 mgl., average + 60 mgl.; and (2) with a Bouguer reduction, between + 22 and + 87 mgl., average + 41.5 mgl. - V.
