In a cobalt precipitation plant, phosphoric acid is used to eliminate excess uranium from the pregnant leach solution, resulting in a cobalt hydroxide product that has little uranium contamination. However, the amount of phosphoric acid added must be monitored and controlled to avoid financial and sustainability impacts and to prevent negative impacts on the final product quality. One possible solution to this problem is the use of online residual phosphorus measurement techniques to regulate the addition. By continuously monitoring the residual phosphorus levels in the solution, the plant can adjust dosing in real time to maintain the target residual phosphorus level. As a result, the cobalt precipitation plant can improve phosphorus level control, lowering the risk of overdosing, and ensuring consistent product quality. This approach can also improve process efficiency, reduce operational costs, and have a positive environmental impact

"In 1995, Louvicourt Mine started one of the first paste backfill operations in Canada. From 500,000 tonnes in 1995, the annual paste backfill tonnage produced reached 800,000 tonnes in 1999. The maximum throughput of the surface plant (including binders) is 3,50Ot/d with a final density of 75 to 76% solids which gives a slump of 15 to 17cm. Following the start-up of the paste backfill plant, the backfill strength performance levels were well below the pilot plant’s predictions. The introduction of ferrous slag, laboratory tests on various binder ratios with or without additives, and the desliming of the tailings enabled us to optimize the mix and operation costs. Primary and secondary stopes are filled respectively with a paste containing 4.5% and 2% binders consisting of a mixture of 20% cement and 80% ferrous slag. In certain stopes, the binder ratio may vary from 2 to 7%, but always in a ratio of 80/20. Six years after start-up, or 4.5mt of paste backfill later, this paper discusses the present operation and the major changes that have occurred over the years to optimize both the operation and the paste fill quality.INTRODUCTIONLouvicourt Mine is operated by Aur Resources Inc. which owns 30% of the shares. Its partners are Novicourt Inc. (45%, subsidiary of Noranda Inc.) and Teck Corporation (25%). The tube bundle system is an integral part of an underground coalmine’s gas monitoring system. The maintenance of these systems is vital to ensure the quality of the data produced. Integrity testing of the tube bundle lines is required monthly, as specified in Standards Australia AS/NZ 2290.3 (1990). The various forms of integrity testing are reviewed, including pressure testing and introduction of a known gas. This paper provides a recommended and standardised methodology for those techniques where none currently exists. A strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats (SWOT) analysis is performed. The parameters considered for the SWOT analysis include resourcing required by the mines, time for the testing to be performed, and quality of the results produced. The suitability of such integrity testing protocols to be used in a mine emergency situation is also evaluated.CITATION:Forrester, L, 2017. The Bulli and Wongawilli Seams, the two principal sources of coking coal for the Port Kembla steelworks of Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd., vary in rank and in type over the Southern and South Western Coalfields.The Bulli Seam, ranging widely in type, produces coke varying from weak to strong. The Wongawilli Seam, more consistent in type, produces coke of more consistent strength, but considerably less strong than that from the best Bulli Seam coal.Plans of seam variation show the regional trends in rank and type for each seam.The strongest coke is derived from coal containing between 45 and 55 per cent vitrinite, m.m.f. This is obtainable from the Bulli Seam in a zone embracing Bulli and Appin collieries.A satisfactory correlation is achieved between vitrinite content and coke stability and hardness, enabling prediction of coke strength for Southern Coalfield coals.The use of vitrinite reflectance, as an indicator of rank, in addition to type to predict coke strengths is at present hampered by lack of data, particularly in the South Western Coalfield. Nevertheless, data available at present allow the use of both variables and give better correlations with coke strengths than type alone.A spread of comprehensive data across both coalfields will enable advance assessment of cokes produced from coals having known rank and type. Blending to a ranktype specification for optimum coke strengths would allow the best use of the coal reserves of the coalfields.

In mid-1991, the design/build contractor set to work on the Pergau HEP in a remote corner of Malaysia, armed with only a slim volume of conceptual drawings. The next five years saw roads, power lines, buildings, dams, and over 30 kilometers of tunnel constructed, followed by two years of E&M installation and commissioning. Along the way, the project overcame geothermal groundwater, faults, land disputes, monsoon rains, marauding tigers, and those most fearsome of foes, politicians and the press. This paper is a testament to the ingenuity, commitment, and persistence of the construction industry professionals who brought this massive project to fruition.

Electronic initiation devices appeared on the market more than 15 years ago and have definitely changed the rules of blasting. It becomes clear that this technology represents a powerful alternative to the traditional accessories. Electronic Delay Detonators (EDD) have attained solutions that were difficult and even impossible to achieve with the previous technology, thanks to the accuracy, usually inferior to one millisecond, and flexibility of the programmability range offering thousands of timing possibilities. Technological progress is long awaited to represent a step ahead compared with the last generation of products. In the case of electronic initiation, some limits nevertheless rapidly appeared, leading to the paradox of loosing operative and safety benefits, compared with the traditional technology it was supposed to outclass.

The project now under construction will comprise a 1.2 km long raw water aqueduct, a major new 0.25million cubic metres per day water treatment works (with space for upgrading to 1.2Mm³/d), a 12.1 km long treated water aqueduct and a primary service reservoir. T HE Mid-Continent Section of the Petroleum Division met on Mar. 11 in the engineer's room of the Tulsa Building, Tulsa, Okla., for the purpose of reviewing the papers presented at the annual meeting in New York. L. G. E. Pignell, chairman and delegate to New York for the Mid-Continent Section, read a brief report giving the outstanding features of the various papers that were presented. He expressed regret that more members of the Division could not be present in New York to hear the interesting papers and discussions. It was his opinion that the various remedies presented for overproduction seemed rather theoretical and impractical and he recommended that the engineers come to the aid of some of the economists in giving more practical consideration to the overproduction problem.

This paper investigates the use of backfill zones and yielding pillars for subsidence control. The investigation begins by choosing an appropriate subsidence predictive technique to simulate the proposed subsidence-control schemes. Two case studies are performed in order to delineate the accuracy and utlility of the chosen predictive technique and then the results of these case studies are used to establish appropriate sets of regional site parameters. Next, a detailed analysis of the major variables affecting the outcome of the subsidence-control simulations is conducted and graphical displays of the exact sensitivity of the surface subsidence to these variables are given. Finally, alterations to the surface subsidence that are expected from using two major subsidence-control techniques are presented. The first technique to be assessed is a backfilled pillar centered longitudinally in a panel. With this arrangement, a minimal amount of backfill material can produce substantial decreases in vertical displacements. The second technique to be assessed is the use of yielding gate pillars to reduce the sinuosity of the transverse subsidence over adjacent panels. With proper design, this technique can greatly curtail surface strains and help minimize remedial drainage control.

Salt slag is a waste product produced by the recycling of aluminum. In most European countries (e.g. Austria, Germany) the landfill disposal of this waste is forbidden because the slag contains soluble salts and these represent a potential source of pollution to the surface and groundwater. Additionally, consisting metal and some compounds in the salt slag can react with water and resulting from this, noxious gases are generated. The recovery of useful materials from these wastes is accordingly both environmentally necessary and economically feasible. This study describes a complete recycling-process for the salt slag, which includes a leaching-cristallization-process to obtain the oxidic residue, a pyrometallurgical-step to clear the oxidic residue and finally an extensive characterization of the achieved products. Due to the increasing price of raw materials, the utilization of the oxidic residue into commercial products has been investigated and application possibilities will be discussed.

"AFTER SPENDING a lifetime in the mining industry it is normal that one should be concerned with the future of his profession, especially if he is directly responsible for the education and formation of future mining engineers. It is not necessary to insist on the importance of mining for Canada and for the entire world to prove the necessity of the Mining Engineer. A statement was made by Zay Jeffries, former vicepresident of General Electric Co., and here I quote: ""Even though minerals without man are of no moment, man would not be man as we know him without minerals ... ""minerals are as essential to the life of social man as food is to man himself"". This certainly expresses magnificently the purpose of the mining profession. These are the reasons why I have accepted to present my views on the future of the Mining Engineer. If I express some concern it is not because I feel that there is any danger for the profession to disappear; men will always respond to a challenge and this can be found in the extraction of minerals as well as in any other field of human endeavour. However, the first big question concerns the competitive position of Canada in the world of mining. To be made available to Canadians and to the rest of the world, all this tremendous potential mineral wealth that our country has been so generously endowed with by nature must be gained from the earth's crust at a competitive cost. Otherwise it will never become ore and will have no value. Let us not forget that although minerals are discovered, mines are not found but are made. So let us be more efficient mine makers. To accomplish this end, it is the duty of the different responsible organizations at all levels - be they governmental, para-governmental, public or private institutions - to do their utmost to assure the profitable development of our mineral wealth. The University has an all-important role to play in preparing all the specialists required by this intricate machine that mining is. All the different disciplines of engineering, health, social and -managerial sciences are needed for the good functioning of the mining industry. Although they are all essential, some will play a more important role as a member of the structure. In this discussion it is the role of the most important member, the mining engineer, who is actually responsible for the extraction of the minerals from the earth's crust that must be established. From this we will then be able to analyse his responsibilities and try to suggest the mining engineering program most suitable to prepare this engineer for his future role."

In 1950, about a third of the world?s population lived in cities. That figure has steadily risen throughout the following decades. Now it is believed that about 60 percent of the estimated 8.1 billion people in 2030 will be living in urban areas. The strain on infrastructure in cities in the developed world is already showing. And the rapid growth in developing nations today is adding to the shortage of materials, equipment and labor needed to keep up with this growth. So, while materials and labor may be in short supply, there is no shortage of work for the underground tunneling and space industry. In June, 718 of those professionals from around the world were in San Francisco, CA for the North American Tunneling (NAT) conference, put on by the Underground Construction Association (UCA) of SME. The attendees spent the three days of technical sessions listening to international authors discuss the state of the industry, new technologies that have become available and updates on major tunneling projects throughout the world. The accompanying exhibit attracted 79 vendors, who displayed the latest in tunneling and underground space equipment and services. In addition to the technical sessions and the exhibit, the NAT featured three short courses ? ?DRB Process Update Workshop,? ?Soft Ground Tunneling Technologies? and ?Underground Blasting Technology and Risk Management.? And the post-meeting field trip to the Devils Slide tunneling project near San Francisco was sold out.

"The Trout Lake stockwork molybdenum deposit is temporally and spatially related to the emplacement of a late Cretaceous granodiorite-tonalite stock in southeastern British Columbia and contains an estimated 49 million tonnes grading O.I9% MoS2- No metal zonation patterns are apparent, with the exception of peripheral tungsten skarn, and exploration was guided largely by geological interpretation. It is typical of the granodiorite, or fluorine-poor type of molybdenum deposit. Molybdenite is contained within a quartz-feldspar vein stockwork and coeval dissemination in igneous (and less commonly metasedimentary) hosts. In general, molybdenite is strongly associated with alkali feldspars, but in detail it is intimately associated with incipient muscovite replacement of albite and K-feldspar; veins that lack feldspars are also typically barren of molybdenite. These textures suggest that fe/dspathic alteration (and precipitation in veins) was an important precursor to mineralization, and the occurrence of similar textures elsewhere (e.g. Henderson) suggest that early feldspathic alteration is important to the genesis of molybdenum deposits in general. Molybdenite deposition at Trout Lake was preceded by contact metamorphism, skarn and potassic alteration, and was overprinted by muscovite-ankerite (phyllic) alteration. Only moderate temperature changes are recorded by the metamorphic and alteration mineral assemblages (350°C to 450°C}; however, with time, fluids became increasingly more acidic and enriched in C02- In light of the intimate molybdenitemuscovite intergrowths, the decrease of pH probably exerted a major control on mineralization.IntroductionGranite-hosted molybdenum deposits can be classified in terms of the composition of the related intrusion, e.g., the granodiorite and granite types of Mutschler et a!. (1981), or the calc-alkaline, alkali-calcic, and alkalic types of Westra and Keith (1981). They have also been classified on the basis of their fluorine contents (Theodore and Menzie, 1984) with the fluorine-rich and -poor varieties roughly corresponding to granite- and granodiorite-type deposits, respectively. For economic reasons, most exploration and research has concentrated on the high-grade/large tonnage granite-type of deposit, exemplified by Climax. F1uorine-poor, granodiorite-type deposits are, however, the most common type in Canada and have been mined in the past (e.g., Endako). In this paper, the authors summarize the research that has been carried out on the fluorinepoor Trout Lake deposit (Boyle and Leitch, 1983; Linnen, 1985; Linnen and Williams-Jones, 1987; 1990) and use what has been learned to develop guidelines for the future exploration of fluorinepoor, granodiorite-type molybdenum deposits."

As demand for optimisation of mining processes increases, more attention is drawn to blast performance and fragmentation improvement. Fractures and discontinuities are among the most influential factors in blast results, therefore one of the initial steps towards blast optimisation is to gather information about the rock mass and integrate it in blast design. This paper presents a method for assessment of rock mass discontinuities and integrating it in production blasts in the Aitik open pit copper mine in Sweden.3D photogrammetric techniques were utilised to map discontinuities and distinguish domains of similar geologic structures in the pit. As a pilot study for a future campaign, four different initiation directions were tested through six pilot blasts in one of the domains. The results were compared in terms of swell and loading efficiency of rope shovels to identify the correlation between blast performance and initiation direction compared to major discontinuity families.It was established that in the trial domain, blasts initiated towards north or north-west yielded larger swell and better performance of loading. Comparing these blasts with discontinuity families show that there is a correlation between blast performance and initiation direction according to the dip and strike of these discontinuities. Such knowledge can be used for future blasts in the same domain to increase long-term operational efficiency through slight modifications in drill pattern and initiation design.CITATION:Beyglou, A, Schunnesson, H, Johansson, D and Johansson, N, 2015. During the past two years the Underground Mine Ventilation Group at PT Freeport Indonesia has undertaken to upgrade their Hygiene Laboratory. This process has included upgrading equipment for dust sampling and gas monitoring, as well as procurement of an OCEC analyzer for Diesel Particulate Matter analysis. While the laboratory equipment represents one factor, these changes have also required re-evaluation of the sampling protocols and the burden of ventilation monitoring personnel. This paper provides a review of these experiences.

A selective dispersion process is presented and the work carried out to find optimum process conditions to minimise the colouring material in ground calcium carbonate (GCC) is described. The feed material is the overflow product from a hydrocyclone which results from using a Denver Attritioning machine with semi-autogenous grinding for one hour and a 1:1 ore/water ratio. By using sodium silicate (SS), with pH 9 and pulp density 5%, the iron content (as colouring impurities) is decreased from 0.21% in the original concentrate to 0.12% in the final concentrate. The degree of whiteness reached is improved to 85% from 63% in the original material. However, by using hexametaphosphate (SHMP) at pH 10 at the same pulp density, the iron content decreased to about 0.073% and hence the whiteness degree increased to about 96%.

"In mining operations, it is widely accepted that strategies to drive operational goals must revolve around improving plant availability, reliability and process efficiency. In this paper, an integrated solution framework for reducing process variability, increasing process efficiencies and maximizing plant availability and reliability is discussed within the context of a typical milling circuit. The framework exploits a real-time analysis “gap” evident in production operations that prevents timeous identification of equipment and process failures. This is achieved by leveraging predictive analytics for equipment health monitoring, control loop monitoring and advanced regulatory control solutions towards enhanced process performance, improved asset management and regulatory compliance. The framework provides for early and actionable warnings on equipment and process degradation using real-time operational data.INTRODUCTION The changing landscape of gold mining and processing presents many challenges that threaten sustainability of existing (marginal) operations as well as deter investment in new projects. As existing “shallow” ore resources become depleted, mining operations are increasingly treating low-grade ores with complex and randomly variable mineralogical characteristics. For example, in South Africa, historically one of the major gold producers, the average grade of ore treated has been decreasing from averages above 4.5 – 5 g/t to current grades averaging less than 3 g/t within a decade (Chamber of Mines, 2012). Moreover, lower tonnages are being treated as a result of the narrowing of the available resource base. Also, the regulatory framework has tightened over the years due to heightened concerns on the safety, health and environmental impacts of mining and related activities."

This paper observes the shape of throw explosion crater its ejecta locus of internal medium and the process of distance along with slope's angle developing. It was discovered that initial velocity is inversely proportional to slope's angle. The velocity of surface distribution at the lower half crater of explosion is larger than at upper one. It carries the relevant calculated formula and physical process of explosion crater forming under the inclined boundary conditions, and some important law. It proved that the gravity influence is very distinct for the blast action in the little resistance line.
