Grain sticking often occurs in the fluidized bed reduction of f ine iron ore, which is closely related to the precipitation morphology of metallic iron on the surface of ore particles. In this work, simulating the gas-solid reduction process of iron ore, in situ observations were carried out to investigate effects of doping mineral oxides on the precipitation morphology evolution of metallic iron during reduction of iron oxides with CO. Results indicate that the precipitation morphology of metallic iron is related to the quantity of doped mineral oxides. The minimum mole fraction of doped oxide ( xyOA N ) that can inhibit the growth of iron whiskers is related to its cation radius ( Ax r ), extranuclear electronic layers ( Ax n ) and valence electrons ( Ax q ). The corrosion of aluminosilicate refractories by soda from three different sources has been studied by microscopic methods. Sodium sulphate from oil ash, sodium chloride used in glazing structural clay products, and sodium borate from borax-impregnated wood ash have fundamentally the same effect on the refractories. The soda is the chief medium of reaction and fluxing, the sulphur, chlorine, and boron being volatized as sulphuric, hydrochloric, and boric acids.INTRODUCTIONBecause of their strong fluxing action, alkalis are one of the main causes of corrosion and slagging of refractories.The action of potash and soda on refractories follows somewhat similar lines, although it is common for one alkali to be greatly in excess of the other. The course of the reaction in a number of cases of alkali attack has been studied by microscopic and chemical methods. For example, the action of potash on blast furnace refractories was studied by Kraner (1942) and Rigby and Richardson (1947), who described the occurrence of various potassium aluminium silicates. Its action on cement kiln refractories was described by Brisbane, Segnit, and Weymouth (1957). The action of soda on glass tank refractories has been studied by many people, for example Bisby (1956) and Resch (1954). The effect of grinding media performance on milling and operational behaviour was demonstrated under different selected conditions of calcium carbonate slurry milling. A variety of grinding media materials and bead sizes, along with two different stirrer tip speeds, were used in the grinding process to generate a particle size reduction of the calcium carbonate (CaCO3). To determine the optimum milling parameters the collected test data were used to calculate and evaluate specific energy as well as stress intensity under different milling conditions. Several of the larger copper projects recently built have included a molybdenum byproduct circuit as part of the overall project due to the favorable molybdenum market conditions and overall economic contribution to the project. This paper provides a summary of moly plant flotation practices across a number of both recent projects and historical ones. Modern Molybdenum flotation flowsheets predominantly incorporate self-aspirated cells and forced air cells with nitrogen addition. The paper provides insight into the process considerations, capital and operating costs associated with both of the cell types. It also reviews metallurgical aspects and important safety aspects. Other aspects including instrumentation and degree of automation are also discussed along with overall plant design.

The 32nd annual short course ?Grouting Fundamentals and Current Practice? was held at the Colorado School of Mines, June 13-17, 2011. The field demonstration portion of the course was conducted June 16 at Baski Inc.?s yard in Denver, CO. The full-scale field demonstration presents many types of drilling and grouting equipment in operation as well as numerous grouting methods per-formed under various field conditions. As part of the field demonstration, the class was shown the proportioning, mixing, testing and injection of various cement grout mixes into sand columns under controlled and recorded conditions. These sand column demonstrations have been conducted under controlled and measured conditions each year since 1999 as part of the short course. The sand column demonstrations were conducted prior to 1999, but with less quality control and minimal record keeping of the proportioning, mixing, testing, injection pressures and the final permeation results.

 Broken Hills is an adularia-sericite epithermal Au-Ag deposit, hosted in flow-banded rhyolites and overlying rhyolitic pyroclastic rocks in the eastern Hauraki Goldfield. The 7.1 Ma deposit was the largest producer of gold in the eastern Hauraki Goldfield, and was one of very few economic deposits hosted in Pliocene rhyolites. This paper presents the results of a recent study in the upper levels of the deposit. Maps and cross-sections constrain structural and lithological relationships, and the lateral and vertical extent of a breccia pipe û the major feature of the upper levels.   Previous studies in the upper levels of Broken Hills have shown that gold and silver values are concentrated around and within a large breccia pipe, mined by a series of æcaveÆ stopes and in veins. Contour diagrams of Au-Ag data from channel samples indicate that the breccia pipe was a major fluid channel-way for mineralising solutions.   The breccia pipe deposits are part of the dynamic geothermal system that formed the Broken Hills ore bodies; they developed as a result of hydrothermal brecciation in areas of structural weakness within a rhyolite pyroclastic unit that overlies a massive rhyolite lava-flow unit. The main breccia pipe begins near the rhyolite/pyroclastic contact, having the shape of an inverted, inclined cone, and consists of silicified breccia, stringers of quartz, and irregular patches of clay-altered country rock. Smaller zones or pockets of hydrothermal eruption breccia are silicified and contain low grade gold in the matrix and in the adjacent silicified wall rocks.   Quartz has been classified according to its physical characteristics as seen in situ and hand specimens indicate that vein definition decreases upwards, perhaps as a result of changing lithological conditions and/or increasing proximity to the paleosurface. Hydrothermal quartz is widespread as veins and as a replacement mineral, or lining fractures and cavities and overgrowing rock fragments. Breccias contain vein quartz, but some quartz veins cross-cut breccias, indicating that vein and breccia formation was relatively synchronous and overlapped in time.   Disseminated gold-silver mineralisation is associated with vein quartz and silicic alteration of the wall rock within the breccia pipe. The auriferous zones are highly irregular and erratic, and sampling results show a wide range of gold-silver ratios, suggesting that highly volatile physiochemical conditions prevailed during mineralisation.

The LaRonde ore is a Cu-Zn-Pb ore with gold (3-4 g/t) and silver (60-100 g/t). The precious metals are recovered with copper concentrate, zinc concentrate and cyanidation of zinc tails via Merrill Crowe precipitation. Subsequent to a recent mill expansion, excessive gold was reporting to zinc concentrate with a concurrent decrease in gold to copper concentrate. Owing to the higher return obtained from the metal, the mill endeavors to recover additional gold and silver to the copper concentrate and minimize the placement of precious metals to the zinc concentrate. A gold deportment study showed that the gold occurs mainly as küstelite, with a moderate amount of electrum and a minor amount of native gold. It also showed that various sulfur-based Au-and/or Ag-bearing coatings on liberated küstelite and electrum were the major mineralogical factors that caused gold and silver to report to zinc concentrate. By frequency, such coatings were observed on 70-80% of total liberated gold particles reporting to the zinc concentrate. Based on the gold deportment and the chemistry of the coatings, the collector chemistry was reviewed and a new collector was added into the circuit which resulted in a significant increase in gold and silver recovery to the copper concentrate. The information obtained from the mineralogy confirmed and guided other process optimization. In this paper, the authors will describe the process mineralogy of the LaRonde ores, and in particular, the mineralogical evidence diagnosing the problem. Reference will also be made to the rationale behind how the problem was solved, the results achieved, and future steps in optimization.

The Sotra Link Project is a major infrastructure project in Norway involving the design, construction, financing and maintenance of several underground and surface structures between Sotra island and the city of Bergen, among them 23 tunnel portals, 12.5 km of tunnels and a 900 m long suspension bridge. This paper describes the benefits in applying a Building Information Modelling (BIM) approach to tunnelling, from Early Design to the Detail Design Phase. The BIM application to the Sotra Link Project resulted in several improvements, such as efficient handling of clashes and inconsistencies, deeper understanding of effective design choices (reduction of errors), more efficient communication between designers, enhanced control of project quantities and costs. The advantages of the BIM approach during the ongoing Construction Phase are also explained.

The occurrence of heavy minerals in the oil sands of Alberta has long been known and has been well documented in the literature. Unfortunately most of the researchers working on this resource have been unable to produce products that meet acceptable market specifications. This has resulted in many misconceptions about this resource. Recent efforts have shown that with some innovative approaches, marketable material can be produced and as a result it might finally be possible to realize the potential of this immense resource that, some have estimated, could contain in excess of 20% of the world demand by 2010. This paper highlights the uniqueness of this mineral assemblage and the mineral processing challenges it presents. It shows the most recent work that has resulted in the production of marketable titanium and zircon products. This paper also focuses on some of the special problems resulting from the variability in the heavy mineral suite. Of special interest is the occurrence and removal of bitumen and pyrite without adding to the sulphur dioxide loading in the regional airshed. The trend by the mining industry to develop various positions on ‘sustainable mining’ has some significance for the heavy mineral industry. Although the industry generally has an excellent track record of eventually rehabilitating disturbed ground in an acceptable manner, heavy mineral mining operations tend to have a relatively large footprint of disturbance and the industry is under considerable pressure to develop options that are more environmentally acceptable. In addition, as operators move to exploit deposits that are lower grade and/or are further from a port site, the emissions per unit of sold product will also rise and the industry will be under pressure to address this issue as well. Because heavy minerals from oil sands are by-products of existing operations, there are virtually no incremental disturbances or emissions that would be associated with heavy mineral production. All mining and tailings remediation issues are accounted for by the oil sand operation. The only incremental emissions would be those associated with the mineral processing operations and transport of finished products to a port site. This paper discusses the environmental and cost implications of this situation.

"The large extent of global production and consumption of aggregates from quarries, grabs one´s attention and makes its substantial and essential standpoint in the world today pretty clear. A great amount of aggregates is utilized in civil engineering applications such as road construction, railway industry, concrete production, etc. Considering this fact that igneous rocks display a higher strength and abrasion resistance, this type of rock is preferred in the field of civil engineering. For all these applications, rock quality assurance is a key factor and certainly unavoidable, and it has great influence on the quality of constructions in civil engineering. One of the major problems encountered by both the producers and users of igneous rock is the fact that, with the passage of time, some specific rocks lose their strength, up to a complete loss of structure or in other words, their disintegration and degradation. In the last decades, different methods and procedures such as Glycol test, methylene blue dye test, as well as the Los Angeles test have been introduced to distinguish these rock properties, and to identify these problems. However, as these methods are time consuming, hard to perform, only to be applied to hand-piece samples, requiring special laboratory equipments, and only possible to be accomplished under laboratory conditions, their application has always been limited to some specific cases, and they are neither recommendable nor advantageous. In addition, these methods provide partially different results for the same rock. To address this widespread quality management problem of the quarry industry, a relatively quick, easy and user-friendly approach is necessary. It calls for a systematic solution with a device that can simply be used day to day in a mine for quality control of the quarry´s daily production. This scientific research is concentrated on developing a systematic method for early recognition and diagnosis of rock quality, in order to control and manage the quality of the quarry production in advance. This method was developed, based on the procedure of the magnetic susceptibility measurement. The obtained values can lead to valuable information regarding the quality of the rock and allows the quality control process to be accomplished and performed at the borehole location. This approach has been assessed through extensive field and laboratory studies. A detailed and comprehensive discussion will be made on the results of the experiments. The advantages and impacts of the application of this method, on increasing the reserves and environmental protection are also discussed."

At the MacIntyre Development of the Titanium Division of National Lead Company a magnetite-ilmenite ore together with gabbro-anorthosite waste is mined from an open pit by shovels and trucks. The ore from the pits is trucked to ore stockpiles for blending ahead of the crusher and to free the mine from crusher delivery schedules. The ore stockpiles are blended to yield a 16.5 to 17.0 % TiO, crusher feed. This requires mining on an assay cut-off rather than a visual grade cut-off. Highly mineralized ore runs from 20 plus % TiO2 and 30 plus % Fe to 15 % TiO2 and 40 plus % Fe as the ratio of ilmenite to magnetite changes. There are three major ore types in the present pit with magnetite ratios varying from about one to one up to three times as much magnetite as ilmenite. Ilmenite and magnetite together liberate from gangue down to about 10 mesh and this is the basis of the magnetic cobbing. Below 10 mesh the ilmenite and magnetite start to separate and ore cobbing pulleys will not hold the ilmenite.

The past decade has seen revolutionary advances in communications and information-handling techniques which have been stimulated by "cold war" military requirements and by current programmes for probing into outer space. The tools used in exploration for petroleum and minerals have been improved significantly as a result of this new space age technology and even greater improvements are on the way.Two areas of technical activity have been particularly fruitful in enhancing the effectiveness of exploration methods. These are1. the development of new approaches, based on information theory,for extracting signal from noise more efficiently than before, and2. the use of high-speed digital computers for storing and processing all kinds of exploration information, not only geophysical but geological as well.In seismic prospecting, use of information theory has led to new techniques such as time-domain filtering, wave-number filtering and correlation methods which have made it possible to obtain usable reflection data from areas which were previously considered non reflective. Complex playback and other data processing facilities have been developed to apply these approaches.Digitization of geophysical data for handling by high-speed electronic computers facilitates many of these techniques for signal-to-noise improvement. Direct digital recording of seismic data in the field is now being d'one on an experimental basis in the United States, and this should become a standard procedure, at least for problem areas.The increased dynamic range, flexibility of filtering and other data processing, and convenience of information storage and retrieval make digital recording attractive in spite of its high cost compared to conventional analogue methods. Digital computers are being programmed to carry out many operations in data reduction and interpretation with substantial savings in time and cost over conventional procedures.INTROPUCTIONIn the years that have passed since the end of the Second World War, the western world has witnessed a technological revolution which may be as far reaching in its ultimate impqct as the Industrial Revolution of the last century.

INTRODUCTION The increasing concern for the environment may well present far more opportunities than problems for those involved in all phases of tunneling. All too frequently in the past, environmentalists and their concerns have been cast in a negative light, as obstacles to be overcome. Often forgotten is the fact that these same environmental concerns have created a rapidly increasing demand for new tunnels. Tunnels for rapid transit projects, clean water supply, and sewage treatment have been given a boost because of environmentalists' concerns about overuse of automobiles, inadequate water supplies, and improper sewage disposal. Concurrent with increasing use of tunnels to help solve or alleviate some of our environmental problems is an obligation not to create new ones in the process. Concerns which we feel responsible tunnel owners, engineers, and contractors should address themselves to include: (1) Minimum energy consumption, both during construction and in operation of the completed project; (2) proper storage and/or disposal of the excavated material; (3) minimum disruption during the construction process - noise, traffic, unnecessarily unsightly work areas, and possible weakening of foundations of nearby structures; and (4) a finished project consistent with community and environmental goals. We are especially concerned about two things. First, the longrun implications of a project -- what's good for a few people in the short-run may be bad for most of the people in the long-run. Block cave mining, in its broadest sense, has transitioned from an orebody/rock mass determined method of extraction, to a low-cost and high production mining method that may be applied to any large ore deposit. This inherently means that caving is now required in more complex rock mass conditions where assistive damage, through preconditioning, may be necessary. This requires comprehensive understanding of the geology, and its interwoven relationship with geotechnical parameters, and is made more challenging due to limited exposure in block cave mines. Limited mine development throughout the cave volume equates to a heavy reliance on drilling data in terms of observations, modelling of the mine geology, and collection of geotechnical data. This translates as increased uncertainty of geological and geotechnical models and has potential to impact significantly on the ability to make informed decisions in the design and operation of the cave mine.Modelling of cave propagation behaviour requires a complex, coupled system of draw of material, flow of material through the cave stocks, and propagation of the cave-back assisted by autogenic stress-related breakage of the rock mass, manifested as seismicity. The role of geological features in the process of cave propagation is not well understood and requires evaluation on a mine-specific basis, given the diversity of geological controls/settings of ore deposits and local variability of stress fields.Seismic monitoring systems can elucidate key geological features and domains, as heterogeneous seismogenic activity is observed ahead of the advancing cave-back. The observations made from analysis of seismic monitoring data may have potential to be used as a validation tool for numerical modelling of predicted cave behaviour in similar geological settings (eg next lift/panel).Understanding of the geological structure, at all scales, is critical to optimise the design and operating decisions made in a block cave operation. At present, intermediate-scale structure, anisotropy, mineralogy and model uncertainty may be neglected or under-represented despite their likely significant role in the mechanisms of cave propagation.Insights from an analysis of the Ridgeway Deeps block cave mine are discussed in this paper.CITATION:Murphy, T, Webster, A and Chitombo, G, 2016. A seismic monitoring network has been installed in western Colorado (USA) in the vicinity of three underground coal mines to (i) distinguish and characterize seismic activity as either mining related or naturally occurring, (ii) implement a real-time event monitoring and notification tool, and (iii) collect data for use in research studies aimed at quantifying impacts from mining-related and natural seismicity. These potential impacts include dynamic rock mass failures such as coal bumps as well as strong shaking in the vicinity of critical structures such as impoundment dams, reservoirs, mine seals, mine openings, and steep slopes. Examples of two damaging seismic events are presented and the mining and geologic factors attending these dynamic failures are described.

In this work, the crystallization of Carnallite from waste brine of Qaidam Basin in Qinghai province was studied based on NaCl-KCl-MgCl2-H2O phase diagram. According to this study, a new crystallization pathway to recycling waste brine was developed. The carnallite salt was formed by using this technology during the waste brine evaporation. The experiment data shows that 5 tons of waste brine was required to form one ton of the carnallite. The average grade of carnallite prepared by using this procedure was about 19.40% of KCl, 16.92% of NaCl, 28.80% of MgCl2, and 0.82% of CaSO4. This study provides an opportunity to utilization of the waste brine.

Blast exclusion zones are instrumental in protecting equipment and personnel. When there is no constraint in footprint, the exclusion zone can be enormous, practically eliminating the hazard of flyrock. Unfortunately, this may not always be the case and in many circumstances the blast design needs to be altered to suite such scenarios. When a conservative design approach is taken, it could completely eliminate any form of ejection, whether it is from the free face or the bench itself. The degree to which typical flyrock models describe fragment motion through air with ballistic flight equations are not justified when such a high level of control is applied. Sustained elevated metal and coal prices in 2011 continued to drive mining projects across British Columbia. The province is the top producer of copper, exporter of coal and the only producer of molybdenum in Canada. The province also produces significant amounts of gold, silver, lead and zinc and more than 30 industrial minerals. The total 2011 value of solid metal production is an estimated $8.6 billion and the outlook for 2012 is positive. British Columbia is poised to bring several new mines onstream in the next few years. Construction continues at the New Afton and Mt Milligan copper-gold projects that are anticipated to be open in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The provincial Environmental Assessment Office indicates there are 26 mine proposals in process with three currently under review and 23 in the preapplication stage. The following text briefly describes 2011 metal and coal mining activities in the five regions reported on by the provinces? regional geologists (Fig. 1).

The Pittsburgh Experiment Station has made a survey of the properties and characteristics of the brands of fuse manufactured in the United States ; 25 samples were procured from 4 manufacturers representing the different brands offered on the market when the investigation was begun . It is believed that the field was completely covered except for special fuse made to order for a particular job .
