The demand for environmentally friendly commercial explosives has increased globally due to concerns regarding environmentally friendly mining activities. Ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) and bulk emulsion explosives (BEE) are two kinds of civil explosives primarily used in coal and mineral mining in Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the leading countries in coal and mineral mining production and export, with abundant resources; therefore, the consumption of civil explosives such as ANFO and BEE is enormous. The selection and evaluation of commercial explosives are mostly done on the commercial and technical side, and no assessment is made based on environmental aspects. This preliminary study evaluates the economic value and environmental burden of greenhouse gas emissions produced by ANFO and BEE and determines which type of explosives is more environmentally friendly. The combination of environmental and economic indicators, eco-efficiency (E/E), was selected to investigate BEE’s economic and environmental performance compared to ANFO. The life cycle of greenhouse gas emissions of BEE and AN was determined using previously available studies and simple calculations. The cost of the product or explosives was used to represent the economic value. The E/E results showed that environmental and economic sustainability could be enhanced using BEE.

In the mining industry abrasion caused by both sliding and impact have over the years resulted in costly damage to installations such as ore passes and silos. Good geotechnical practices combined with the use of a high quality abrasion resistant concrete can prolong the life of such an installation and minimize problems associated with abrasion. In order to maximize the life of an abrasion resistant concrete, the choice and combination of the correct raw materials (cement, aggregate and fibre) and overall mix design needed to make up such a concrete are important. This paper presents technical data and practical experience showing that concrete formulated with calcium aluminate cement resists severe abrasion conditions better than similar OPC-based concretes.

"Radioactive minerals are found together with the more familiar ore minerals in veins, gossans, and pegmatites, Since they have a peculiar property, that of giving off penetrating radiation, the simplest means of field detection is by the use of some radiation detector.The two principal radioactive elements one may encounter are uranium and thorium. These may occur separately or together. At present there is very little demand for thorium and hence radioactive occurrences should be examined with some care to determine which element is present. To do this it may be necessary to have a chemical analysis made of samples from the occurrence. Uranium minerals that do not carry appreciable thorium have a conventional occurrence in quartz or carbonate veins. They are distinctive in appearance. Pitchblende, the principal ore, is hard, black, and very heavy. It weathers readily to soft, powdery minerals •brilliantly coloured orange, yellow, and sometimes green. It may be associated with familiar minerals such _as native silver, nickel-cobalt sulphides and arsenides, chalcopyrite, and hematite.It is the purpose of this paper to review very briefly the types of radiation detectors available .and to draw some general conclusions as to the types most suitable for particular applications.The highly penetrating gamma radiation is the most useful for detection of radioactive mineralization. The alpha rays have little or no penetration, and beta rays are stopped by thicknesses of a millimeter or so of material. We shall confine our remarks principally to those instruments intended to detect gamma radiation. These are of three types."

Expanded version of a paper originally presented at the Alluvial mining conference, London, 11-13 November 1991 and published in Alluvial mining, Barking: Elsevier Applied Science for IMM, 1991, p.115-156. The usual measure of performance in gold and tin dredging is the R/E factor. It compares actual production or recovered grade for a given period with that estimated from the original sampling. The factor is a multiple of four component factors, each ideally approaching 1.00. The factors are concerned with estimation, selection, excavation and treatment. The estimation factor reflects the errors involved in determining the grade and depth of single drill-holes or pits. An optimum selection factor is achieved by a higher drilling density. The excavation factor is affected by failure of the dredge to excavate the total volume contained within its course. The required dredge throughput rate influences not only the success in digging recovery but also the treatment factor. No two alluvial deposits are the same, but, in general, the greatest divergence from 1.00 is invariably demonstrated by the estimation factor. A major divergence in one of the other factors may also be the cause of the R/E factor being significantly different from 1.00. Pressure filters were found to be necessary to produce Elura silver/lead and zinc concentrates at sufficiently low moisture contents for bulk cargo shipment by sea to smelters.The difficulty in obtaining low moistures was due to the fine primary grind, 80% passing 45 microns, and resultant fine concentrates, 97% passing 45 microns.The filtration system was designed to filter up to 90,000 tonnes/year silver/lead concentrates and up to 130,000 tonnes/year zinc concentrates.This paper details the preliminary test work to select Larox automatic pressure filters, and the commissioning and operation of these filters to achieve design criteria for both concentrates. The design criteria for both concentrates have been bettered due to the concentrates being coarser than the design sizing.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of the investigation of manganese mineral occurrences in continental United States, the Bureau of Mines has collected several lots of ore from properties in the vicinity of Long Valley, Ariz. The ore occurs as irregular and random pockets in a brecciated zone. As only high-grade portions of the deposits obtained by selective mining would be acceptable as commercial-grade manganese ores, an investigation was made to determine amenability of the ores to concentration by ore-dressing methods. Several types of ores, differing in grade and mineral associations, were studied.Ores from the Vaiazza property are of special interest, owing to the successful application of silica flotation for their concentration. Ores from the Shroup and Conner-Hough properties are very similar but differ somewhat in their response to ore-dressing Method's. In all instances, the man¬ganese minerals are psilomelane and pyrolusite, with minor amounts of other manganese oxides. The country rook is a brecciated limestone; the diluent in the high-grade ore pockets is chiefly silica. The low-grade manganese ores are limestone replacements, and the chief gangue material, of course, is limestone."

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng. (Mining Eng.) Cullinan Diamond Mine currently handles 3.2 million tons of run of ore per annum. This is done by means of an underground train system, which is located at 763 metre level. Four trains, one in each quarter of the pipe, collect ore from passes and transport it to centrally located tips in the north and south of the pipe. The ore is then split into coarse and fine fractions. The coarse fraction proceeds to the primary crushers in the north and south. Historically, mining has been performed in such a manner that an equal amount of ore has reported to each quarter of the pipe. However, the tonnage profile of the mine will change such that the ore will no longer be split equally. For approximately five years the majority of ore will report to the east and thereafter most of the ore will report to the western portion of the mine. This will continue for the remainder of the current infrastructure level?s operational life. Coupled with this is the fact that the mine is aiming to increase its annual production to 3.8 million tons. The result is that the current ground handling system cannot accommodate the additional tons and therefore alternative ground handling options have been investigated. The continued existence of Cullinan Diamond Mine relies on finding a system that can economically handle the additional tonnage. Three options were investigated. Firstly, a train option, which would be an upgrade of the current system, was investigated. Two truck options were also investigated, the first of which was a conventional truck option. The second truck option was more interesting and involved an unfamiliar Combi truck system. The truck options were investigated primarily due to the fact that the block height of the BA West (a new production block) can be increased by 15 meters if a truck option is decided upon. This would create a significant increase in revenue for the BA West project. Each of the options was assessed in terms of its physical and financial feasibility. In terms of the physical constraints, it was found that all three systems could work. Detailed financial analysis indicated that either of the two truck options would be a suitable solution. However, due to the limited information regarding the Combi truck option, it should be further investigated. This applies particularly to the actual running and maintenance costs for the equipment.

"THE property of Red Mountain Mines Limited is located 11/2 miles north and west of the town of Rossland, in southern British Columbia. The mine is situated on the flank of Red mountain, famous in pioneer days as the site of a number of profitable gold-copper producers. Mining and milling commenced in May, 1966, and by the first of July the concentrator was treating close to its average design capacity of 400 tons per day. The following description of the property and its operations is divided into three parts, dealing respectively with geology, mining and milling.GeologyAll the known ore reserves of Red Mountain Mines occur on the Coxey claim, on the west slope of Red mountain. Although there are indications of molybdenite mineralization elsewhere on the Company's property, these have not been developed.The Coxey and adjoining areas are underlain by the Mount Roberts formation of the Rossland volca-nics. This formation consists of an interbedded series of volcanic and sedimentary rocks, mostly brecciated and silicified near the ore zone, and all intruded by igneous rocks which occur in various forms, and vary in composition from basic to acid. The country rock in the vicinity of the mineralization seems to be mostly a volcanic, approximately andesitic in composition, and possibly a surface flow. There is much banding, some of which is undoubtedly due to tuff and agglomerate layers, and some to narrow, siliceous, sedimentary horizons such as the surface exposure of the main ""A"" orebody, much of which was a thin capping of greyish banded rock that looked like quartzite. The drill holes also intersected occasional layers of black, argillaceous quartzite, sometimes altered to a greenish colour. The whole assemblage has been silicified with varied intensity, sometimes to such an extent as to have obscured or obliterated the original characteristics. The mineralized zone has also been strongly brecciated, the fragments varying in size from less than an inch up to large masses, best described as a mega-breccia. Anomalous results obtained in drilling, such as sedimentary sections that do not appear in adjoining holes, may sometimes be due to the presence of these large blocks, no longer in their original position. The whole volcanic unit is thus very complex and confusing. For practical purposes, the ore may be said to occur in a greenstone formation with minor sedimentary interbeds and considerable later igneous material."

The petroleum literature contains many reports on the relative permeability properties of porous media. However, only recently have studies of relative permeability at elevated temperatures been made.1 -5 Each of these studies presents relative permeability data on water-oil systems in linear sandpacks or sandstone cores under isothermal conditions. The results of these investigations are dissimilar. Edmondsonl found that in Berea sandstone a temperature-dependent effect was present, while Shilobod,2 using the same material, found no temperature dependence after normalizing for initial water saturation. Workers at Texas A&M U.3-5 found that the ratio kw/ko was temperature dependent in an unconsolidated system. The differences in results of these studies are probably a consequence of differences in the material employed, in the experimental procedures followed, and in the properties of the porous systems used. This paper describes an experimental investigation of permeability ratio temperature dependence, conducted to clarify some of the results obtained by previous workers. Each experiment described in this paper involved the isothermal displacement of Chevron No. 15 white oil by either nitrogen, steam, or distilled water and displacement of water by nitrogen. All permeability ratios were calculated using the Welge procedure. Values of the water-oil permeability ratio were obtained over the temperature range 75OF to 540°F. Results indicate the ratio is temperature dependent at low water saturations, probably due to interfacial effects. However, as the saturation is increased, temperature dependence decreases until, above some minimum saturation, the ratio becomes insensitive to temperature. Previously published work indicates that the dependence reappears at very high water saturations, a region of the ratio curve not completely examined in the present study. It appears that water-oil permeability ratios are temperature dependent at the extremes of the ratio curve where changes in interfacial tension with temperature induce variations in residual saturations. Between the extremes, there is a region in which the permeability ratio is insensitive to temperature. The size and location of this region is probably a function of the characteristics of the porous system. Gas-oil permeability ratios calculated from nitrogen-white oil displacement experiments indicate a definite temperature dependence over the range 75OF to 500°F and over the entire gas saturation range studied. Evidence discussed in this report indicates that this dependence is a consequence of molecular slippage in the gas phase. This is an extension of the Klinkenberg effect6 to two-phase systems at high temperatures (the existence of slippage in two-phase systems at room temperature has been demonstrated7). In New South Wales, development applications for major coal mining proposals are determined by the Minister for Planning and Environment and applications for mining leases and other mineral titles are dealt with by the Minister for Mineral Resources. The environmental conditions placed on the development consent, the coal mining lease and the approvals and licences under the pollution control legislation, amount to a substantial component of any new project's planning and commissioning considerations.An outline is presented of the framework within which various approvals are granted and conditions for environmental management are imposed upon mining projects. The principles and concerns, as perceived by the regulatory authorities, on which the majority of approval conditions are based are also outlined.No attempt has been made to analyse the extent to which these principles or standards are achieved in practice, nor to discuss the degree to which some of the conditions are achievable with the current status of technology and economics in the coal industry.

Friction-type hoists have been in operation at Geco Mines Limited since Septtember, 1957. At the end of the year 1963, the skip hoist had handled nearly ~ million tons of ore and waste. In March, 1962, with the deepening of the shaft, the hoisting de11th was increased from 1,450 to 2,450 feet. Operating experience with the hoists, hoist and balance ropes, rope treads and other related equipment is presented. The paper is intended to supplement an earlier one -"Heavy-Duty Friction Hoisting at Geco Mines," by W. M. Harvey (C.I.M. Transactions, Volume LXIII, 1960, pp. 193 -197). General G ECO Mine Limited is located at Manitouwadge, Ontario, approximately 160 miles east of Port Arthur and 190 mile northwest of Sault Ste. Marie. The Company was formed to exploit a copper-zinc-silver orebody, with current ore reserve (1963) of approximately 21 million tons. The production plant was designed to mine and treat 1.25 million tons per annum. The production and service hoists are mounted at-the top of a reinforced concrete tower above the shaft.

"Crushing and screening theory and application has remained fairly consistent in the last 50 years. The application of such equipment is guided by varied formulaic conventions and rules that due to the entropic nature of the process, remains more an art than a science. The variability of conditions creates an environment in which trial and error becomes the principal means of process balance and control. This paper illustrates some of the theories behind the process, plus other assumptions, postulates, myths and misconceptions that exist within the crushing and screening industry.INTRODUCTIONContinuous material balance calculations are habitually performed in the design of new comminution circuits as well as in the valuation of existing circuits. A continuous material balance calculation is one in which the input rate of material is equal to the output rate for each unit functioning in the circuit. At continuous analysis, there is no accumulation or losses of material within the system, as it is when performing a discrete event analysis.In order to produce viable and manageable mine-to-mill material, whether it is ready to leach or ready to mill, we must reduce the material in a series of stages. The power demand increases as the material size decreases, as it is when folding a piece of paper successively. As with the paper, there is a crushing size limitation that is a consequence of the mineral properties such as work index, moisture, viscoelasticity, etc. Comprehensive knowledge of crushing plants in both the aggregate and the mining industries show that, after three stages of crushing, a particle size distribution originating from a blasted deposit can be reduced from an nominal maximum size of 500 mm to a nominal maximum size of 12 mm. if the last stage of crushing is set in closed circuit, the screen openings will be able to yield a smaller top size.Achieving steady and continuous material balance poses major difficulties as crusher lose their settings, screens blind or peg, and material characteristics change geographically or seasonally. Overloading conditions in crushers and screens are nothing but counterproductive, and the net losses of an unbalanced circuit can be overlooked when mining operators are paying a lot more attention to the evermore complex systems downstream.It is not simply the crushing of the mineral but achieving the right size for the downstream milling process that will yield the maximum amount of energy savings."

Cadia East Mining operations have employed geometallurgical techniques to advance the understanding of the in situ rock hardness variability across existing Panel Caves (PC). Geometallurgy advances the understanding of variability across an orebody through the integration of geology, mineralogy and processing response and therefore enhances spatial mapping of comminution or separation properties. Spatially extensive geometallurgical measurements are necessary so that continuous rock properties can be generated and used for the development of comminution and processing domains using geostatistical modelling. Standard testing protocol across geological and mineralogical domains is vital to understand the variability in deposit wide comminution and separation properties. The high cost and large sample requirements associated with metallurgical test work typically results in insufficient data density and distribution, making it difficult to model and map deposit scale variability. Quantitative hardness proxy tools are useful to measure in situ rock hardness, however this data is typically either sparse or missing within advanced mining operations. In recent years, mineralogy and multi-element assay data has often been collected as part of the standard geological data set and is generally coincident with metallurgical test work. In this paper relationships between mineralogy and comminution parameters have been applied to multi-element assay data with coincident measured Bond Work Index (BWi) data to generate a predicted BWi using linear regression. The predicted BWi is intended to supplement existing measured BWi data to enable better extrapolation across the deposit. Geostatistical Conditional Simulation methods have then used the predicted and measured BWi data to produce a BWi variable as a new input to the resource model. The simulated BWi can be used as an input for specific energy models to predict required grinding energy consumption across a deposit.

The steel for gas turbine compressor discs (26NiCrMoV14.5) requires some mechanical properties like strength, impact, toughness, fatigue, and creep resistance in order to be used in such application. To achieve the properties required for the gas turbine compressor discs, the material should have very low contents of sulfur, phosphorus, antimony, tin and arsenic. The level of cleanliness should also be very high and this is possible by achieving low oxygen content keeping the deoxidation elements like silicon, manganese and even the aluminum in very low percentages. The main problem in refining such steel is to adjust a sufficiently low oxygen content to have a good desulfurization and at same time a good cleanliness without using silicon, manganese or aluminum as deoxidizers. Combination of initial selection material, steelmaking process control, forging sequence and heat treatment cycles can provide uniform mechanical properties throughout the gas turbine compressor discs. Villares Metals SA as a big player on special steels with complex process has been developing this kind of material for several years. The objective of this work is to show the process technology evolution involved in the production of this kind of steel under the discussed preconditions.

The laser sorting technique for replacing the handpicking of the non-ferrous metal scrap from auto shredders was first introduced 1990, The process is based on the use of atomic emission spectroscopy induced by lasers to identify the scrap particles and sort them with adequate systems into main fractions of Al-, Zn-and Cu-alloys, stainless steel and lead, In the meantime the handling technique for the scrap, i.e. the singling and sorting technique as well as the analytical detector were further developed for more efficiency and higher reliability, i,e. less maintenance, minor sorting errors etc. These developments were mainly based, on and initiated by operational experiences from the startup phase of a first production plant. Part of the on going research work was the development of an ,aluminium detector which makes it the first time possible to sort mixed aluminium scrap automatically into specific alloy fractions.

The U.S Bureau of Mines is conducting research to develop improved guidelines for selecting the type and pattern of roof support in different geologic environments (Mucho, et al., 1995). As a part of this wider research effort, a multifaceted ground control investigation was conducted at the Diamond TB Mine of RoxCoal, Inc. The study included statistical analysis of mine-wide roof bolt performance, instrumented bolt test areas, stress damage mapping, and pillar design analysis. The mine employs state-of-the-art continuous miner technology, including mobile roof supports and continuous haulage, to retreat mine the Lower Kittanning Coalbed. A herringbone section design makes the stability of the center belt entry critical to efficient retreat mining. Roof cutters formed during section development sometimes set up unstable immediate roof conditions in advance of the belt entry mobile roof supports during retreat mining.

"Automation offers the mining industry great potential for improvements in productivity and safety. However, the experience of introducing automation in other industries has been that the full potential of new technology is not always realised. Designers are surprised, for example, to find that automation does not eliminate human errors. Unwanted and unexpected consequences also arise if the introduction of automation fails to consider how people will adapt to the new technology. A focus on the technical aspects of automation is necessary but not sufficient for success. The potential for improvements in productivity and safety promised by automation will only be achieved if the joint cognitive system that emerges from the combination of humans and automation is designed to perform the functions required for system success. This case study describes the human factors issues associated with the introduction of automation generally, and describes a case study of the successful implementation of loader automation at Northparkes mine.Information obtained through a site visit and interviews with operators, safety staff and the project manager revealed the following strategies for successful design and implementation of the automation system: involve the people who will be impacted encourage constant communication between operators and designers provide operators with essential information avoid providing non-essential information provide the operators with flexibility empower operators to take action take advantage of the new possibilities automation provides.CITATION:Burgess-Limerick, R, Horberry, T, Steiner, L and Cronin, J, 2017. The National Safety Competition was inaugurated in 1925 by the Bureau o1 Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation With the Explosives Engineer. In the first nationwide contest, 210 mines and quarries were enrolled. In 1962, the thirty-eighth anniversary of the competition, 910 mines and quarries were enrolled. These participating plants were worked a total of 133,292,989 man-hours. Of the enrolled plants, 415 achieved injury-free operations tar the year, the largest number of perfect safety records in the history of the contest. In 1961 and 1962, the National Safety Competition was conducted and sponsored by the Bureau of Mines. In January 1963, the American Mining Congress became a cosponsor and participated with the Bureau in the award activities related to the 1962 contest. The basic purpose of the competition is to stimulate employees to work safely and too give impetus to the building of better accident-prevention programs. A well-designed and efficient safety program helps a company economically by cutting costs, preventing damage to equipment and materials, and reducing nonproductive delays. An effective safety program benefits the employee more directly because his injuries cause personal suffering, lost time, and lower living standards for his family. Since both have much to gain, management and workers should cooperate closely to eliminate disabling work injuries. The greater contest participation and the larger number of perfect safety records indicate increasing safety consciousness on the part of management and employees.

Solution mining, sometimes also refered to as chemical mining or bacterial mining, is an innovative technology which, by making use of proper chemical reagents and taking advantage of bio-chemical action of some micro-organism species, can dissolve effectively most. desirable metallic values from ores and then extract them profitably from the resultant metal-bearing solution by suitable means to form the metal product it is more preferable to the conventional mining methods, not only because of its capability to improve working conditions and minimize environmental problems either underground or on surface, but also for its amenability in particular, to exploit low-grade or submarginal ore bodies, or those deposits which are too deep-seated to be mined out economically. Furthermore, it also provides a potential approach to win metals directly from their ores or ore-deposits in-situ by more simplified methods and at a lower cast than the conventional mining-milling-smelting process would do previously. Hence, in developing countries such as China, it will most, probably become a new mining tool of great promise. (1)
