This paper describes block -caving methods and practices of the Bagdad Copper Corp. in Yavapai County , Ariz . It is one of a series being prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining methods , practices , and costs in various mining districts of the United States . The story of the Bagdad caving operation is of particular interest because the ore body was not as thick as at other mines where the method had been successful . At Bagdad the caving method worked very well as a smallscale operation of 300 tons per day but was abandoned when production was increased to 2,000 tons per day . The Bagdad mine is in western Yavapai County , Ariz . , about 22 miles northwest of Hillside , a station on the Phoenix -Ash Fork branch of the Atchison , Topeka & Santa Fe Railway system ( fig . 1 ) . Copper ore now is mined by open -pit methods . The ore is concentrated , and the concentrates are trucked to Hillside and shipped by rail to a custom smelter . Some molybdenum sulfide is produced as a byproduct . This report gives a brief history of the district , describes the ore de- posit , and outlines the methods of prospecting , exploration , and estimation of ore . Development and former underground mining , including stope preparation , stoping , and transportation , are described . Extraction of ore , production rates , miscellaneous operations related to mining , wage and contract systems , and method of concentration are described . The final section discusses mining costs . The underground mine was visited by the author several times between 1937 and 1942 , and some information has been drawn from personal notes . The property again was visited in June 1957 , and maps and plans for this paper were furnished by the company at that time ; they have been edited to conform with Bureau of Mines format . The underground mine could not be visited then because it had been closed in 1948 when open -pit mining was begun .

"IntroductionWestar Mining Ltd. is Canada's largest producer of metallurgical coal for the export market. It currently operates two mines, the Balmer Mine at Sparwood, British Columbia producing 6 000 000 tonnes per year and the Greenhills operation at Elkford, producing 2 100000 tonnes per year. Approximately 1600 people are employed between the two mines which operate independently but share common administrative services.Like most mining companies in Canada over the past three or four years, Westar has faced rising production costs along with flat or declining prices and demand for its products. In order to survive under these conditions it has become necessary to strive for decreased costs in any way possible. Over the past two years there has been a widespread introduction of microcomputers across the company. In order to satisfy increasing demand for accurate and pertinent information while at the same time increasing productivity, the microcomputer has become an invaluable tool.This paper describes some of the problems faced by a mine maintenance department in this operating climate and how they were solved with the help of a microcomputer. It also describes some of the problems that may be encountered both with equipment and people and recommends some ways that these might be minimized or avoided. Finally, an assessment of whether or not the move to microcomputers was a current and economical one, and a brief description of future plans and projects is given.The Maintenance OrganizationIn order to appreciate fully the role that microcomputers are playing within the Maintenance Department at Westar Mining, a little background on the organization and operating philosophies is in order. Most of the comments apply directly to the Balmer operations, however, the Greenhills operation is similar in concept.The mine maintenance organization operates on a fleet based concept with these departments reporting to the maintenance superintendent: haulage trucks, shovels and drills, loaders and Caterpillar equipment, maintenance services, and rebuild services.Each of these departments is headed by an assistant superintendent and is responsible for all maintenance on the equipment on the respective fleet. Shift foreman, planners, specialists and clerical staff are assigned to each fleet. A central engineering and administrative group consisting of one engineer and three clerical positions is responsible for maintenance engineering and centralized administrative services"

"Stoppings in coal mines serve, important and. vital functions, such as coursing the ventilating current, sealing off abandoned or dangerous workings, sealing fire areas, and separating mines at boundaries. Stoppings may hold back water, but normally that is not their function; their design is, or should be very different from that of a hydraulic dap which is designed to a definite load, often a very heavy one, from one direction over an indefinitely long period. Hence, a dam usually requires an arched structure to resist hydraulic pressure, and it must be massive to meet vertical stresses due to heavy ground pressure.Stoppings are designed primarily to resist a pressure applied laterally through air or gases. Their strength cannot be stated without specifying the direction of applied load. A stopping may be placed in stress by proof pressure subsequent to erection, through extraction of pillars in the vicinity which may act direct, or by squeezing the ribs or heaving the floor. These forces act more or less parallel to the faces of the stopping and may be very great but measures must be taken suitable to each case, and it is impossible to allow for these in general specifications other than to call for normally good construction. A stopping is principally designed to resist the action of forces at right angles to its face, such as the shocks of blasting, the pressure of gas from instantaneous violent out bursts such as have occurred in certain British Columbia coal mines, sudden compression of the air by great falls of roof in closed spaces, and at time pressures that accompany an explosion of either fire damp or coal dust or both. Determining ventilation system model inputs from the field test work has been produced in the working oil shale mine which has been in production since the early 1970s. At this mine room-and-pillar with drill-and-blast methods are used. The mine has a complicated ventilation system to supply fresh air for the eight mining production areas on the radius of about 12 km. The main purpose of the experimental test works was to obtain data for estimation of an optimum cross-section area for a new ventilation shaft. Experimental test works included measurements of air volume and fan pressure using five different modes of intake air through the ventilation shafts system. Measurements of airway friction factors were obtained during the ventilation surveys to determine characteristic friction factors for the intake airway. The results of the measurements will be used for further air flow simulation processes required for design of new additional ventilation shafts in the oil shale mine. Results of the study can be useful in estimation of frictional pressure drop in oil shale mine conditions.CITATION:Sabanov, S, 2017. The effect of the amount of cold reduction and annealing temperature on the evolution of the texture of AISI 441 steel is reported. The steel was cold rolled by 62%, 78%, and 82%, followed by isothermal annealing of each sample at 900°C, 950°C, and 1025°C for 3 minutes. The crystallographic texture was determined by Phillips X?Pert PROMPD texture diffractrometer. Microstructures were characterized using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).The results show that sample that received 78% cold reduction and annealing at 1025°C presented the highest Rm-value and lowest ?R-value, which would enhance its deep-drawing capability. In addition, this sample showed the highest intensity of shifted ?-fibre, notably {554}<225> and {334}<483>. It can therefore be concluded that the ?-fibre, which favours deep drawing, is optimal after 78% cold reduction and annealing at 1025°C.

"The Three Bluffs gold deposit is located in the Committee Bay greenstone belt, which forms part of the Rae domain of the western Churchill province, Nunavut, Canada. Gold mineralization is hosted by iron formation of the Neoarchean volcanosedimentary Prince Albert Group, and is associated with silicification (quartz veining) and sulfidation of magnetite and other Fe-rich minerals. Conventional U-Pb zircon dating of a conformable dacite unit within the volcanosedimentary host-rock sequence and a crosscutting diorite intrusion confirm a ~2.7 Ga age for deposition of the supracrustal package. U-Pb monazite dates and Pb isotopic analyses of sulfides were obtained by laser ablation-multicollector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS). A subset of U-Pb monazite (1813.8 ± 8.7 Ma) and Re-Os arsenopyrite (1822 ± 21 Ma) dates, combined with a Pb-Pb secondary errorchron age for pyrite and arsenopyrite (1829 ± 77 Ma), suggest that gold mineralization associated with sulfidation of the iron formation occurred at ~1815 Ma, prior to high-grade (upper amphibolite facies) tectonometamorphism in the Three Bluffs area (D2TB/(M2TB). An ~1815 Ma age for deposit formation is broadly consistent with evidence from elsewhere in the western Churchill province and to the southwest in Manitoba and Saskatchewan for a late Trans-Hudson (1.9-1.8 Ga) gold mineralizing event. The majority of U-Pb monazite ages form a second population at 1780.6 ± 4.2 Ma, similar to the age of the majority of Re-Os arsenopyrite analyses (1763 ± 11 Ma). These dates are thought to reflect the timing of peak M2TB metamorphism. 40Ar/39Ar dating of amphibole, biotite, and muscovite yielded plateau ages ranging from 1723.8 ± 9.0 Ma to 1710 ± 17 Ma, which are interpreted to record the timing of postpeak metamorphic cooling to below the respective closure temperatures for Ar diffusion in these minerals. Le gîte aurifère de Three Bluffs est situé dans la ceinture de roches vertes de Committee Bay, laquelle appartient au domaine de Rae dans l’ouest de la province de Churchill, au Nunavut, Canada. "AbstractThe Monitoring & Instrumentation Committee (MIC) of DFI Europe has the objective to support DFI members in concern of risk management of geotechnical matters, where monitoring and instrumentation have added value.Work of the CommitteeA study by the committee showed that there are already several existing (national) guidelines. They all have their strengths and limitations and their focus may vary a little per country due to local regulations and typical local building activities, but the main question remains what added value another new guideline would have. More likely it would add to the confusion instead of providing overview.Companies with larger experience in geotechnical monitoring (often larger consultancy firm, contractors or clients) are already quite familiar with its benefits do not really need a new guideline in how to design and effectively apply sophisticated geotechnical monitoring systems for special projects.Therefore the aim of the MIC is to focus a little more towards smaller organizations - that are less familiar with monitoring and instrumentation - and the more ‘regular’ type of project that they are mainly involved in. The MIC wants to create a tool which helps them to create risk awareness, to understand the benefits of geotechnical monitoring and to provide them information about how and where to find the right partners and equipment to setup and apply appropriate monitoring systems for their projects.Monitoring and instrumentation benefits are for example:• Risk control during construction stage;• Costs reduction in design and construction (taken limitation of geotechnical aspects into account).• Prevent of unnecessary delays in construction work• Increasing general awareness of geotechnical risks and possibilities of monitoring.The cost of monitoring compared to the cost of failure and/or the savings that can be achieved play a role in the work of the committee. DFI members benefit from the shared knowledge by the MIC on monitoring and instrumentation within their process of risk management."

This paper presents the results of the second in the series of annual canvasses on the consumption of ferrous scrap and pig iron in the United States, inaugurated in 1935 by the Bureau of Mines and published in Report of Investigations 3329. The study was undertaken in response to requests from trade organizations and others for detailed statistics on this phase of the iron and steel industry. Thus, for the first time, producers, buyers, sellers, and consumers of iron and steel scrap have had an accurate statistical picture of this important raw material As originally contemplated, the study was to be continued on an annual basis, but, owing to budgetary limitations for the fiscal year 1937-38, the Bureau may be unable to conduct the canvass for 1937.

The Bureau of Mines conducted tests designed to compare its breathing metabolic simulator (BMS) with other methods that are currently used to evaluate the performance of respiratory protective equipment. The BMS is a commercially developed device that uses a piston cylinder to simulate breath movement. Using a propane furnace that consumes oxygen and forms CO2, the BMS also simulates the respiratory metabolism of humans. The breathing and metabolic subsystems of the BMS are described in detail in this report. Results are compared from tests that used the BMS to evaluate respiratory equipment and from tests that used human subjects for the same purpose. The BMS was also tested against a pulsatile breathing machine (PBM) previously designed by the Bureau. Both machines were used to test respiratory equipment, and the test results are compared in this report. To illustrate typical applications of the BMS, the report briefly describes how the BMS was used to test two different types of closed-circuit respiratory apparatus, and the test results are presented. This research showed that BMS test results compared more closely to the results of tests that used human subjects than did results obtained using the PBM.

The determination of the proper cutoff grade for an open pit metal mine is based on economic criteria and the operating philosophy of the mining company. Previous papers have dealt with the balance of a fixed mine production capacity versus economic return. Mine production capacity is often controlled by the amount of mining equipment and the working area in the pit. A complete cutoff grade strategy is a balance of economic return of mining higher grade material versus the capital costs of additional production capacity and the operating cost of moving the waste and low grade material to assure proper ore release. An approach to the problem is presented which is based in part on work by previous authors and provides guidelines to proper cutoff grade strategy encompassing the time value of money and variable commodity prices.

High strength cable strand supports are predominately used as a supplemental means of ground control in longwall and development operations in the U.S. The advantages of cable strand supports have been documented and include flexibility, strength, and ease of installation. Since the majority of cable supports installed in the U.S. today are partially grouted, and this same segment of supports has no inherent installed tension, the supports are considered currently arbitrarily strictly supplemental and therefore, cannot currently be deemed primary support (in most mining districts). This paper details and discusses two distinctly different configurations and the technical advantages of active partially grouted cable supports for certain primary support applications. The evolution of the designs for both systems is highlighted. Field data illustrates the amount of active load in relationship to installed torque and the affects that component variables have on this load measurement. Roof control patterns using active cable supports are examined as alternatives for combination patterns using primary and supplemental systems. The importance of maintaining consistent installation procedures plays an important role in the level of performance of the system. Economics comparing the installation of active cables with other primary/supplemental patterns is also included.

This paper is based on a study to determine the potential beneficiation opportunities for marble from Griekwastad in the Northern Cape Province. The marble was characterized mineralogically by X-ray diffraction. Major and trace elements were determined using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy. The sample was crushed, and the crushed material beneficiated by tumbling and polishing. The resulting beads were incorporated into a variety of jewellery and other decorative items. It is concluded that the beneficiation of Griekwastad marble presents a good opportunity for value addition and job creation, provided that an effective marketing strategy for the products can be developed..

"The effect of the copper and magnesium contents and quenching rate during quenching on the age hardening behavior of 2000 series aluminum alloys was investigated. For the higher copper-containing specimens as conventional alloys, like AA2024, precipitation of the stable phases increased as the quenching rate decreased under the as-quenched conditions. The maximum hardness after the artificial aging of air cooled(AC) specimens was much lower than that of the water quenched(WQ)specimens. On the other hand, for the lower copper-containing specimens, coarse precipitation did not increase even in the case of the AC. The age hardening behaviors of the WQ and AC were very similar such that the maximum hardness and aging rate were almost the same. Many parts of the fine precipitates that increased the hardness were thought to be the GPB zone or fine S’ phase for the WQ and relatively coarse S’ phase for the AC. From the calculated CCT(continuous cooling transformation)diagrams, the lower copper-containing specimens could maintain the copper and magnesium in the solid solution state during the AC, so they could be quenched at a rather slower quenching rate like the AC.INTRODUCTIONThe 2000 series aluminum alloys, containing copper and magnesium as the major chemical components, are some of the well-known heat treatable aluminum alloys. These alloys have a high quenching sensitivity, thus the age hardening ability of these alloys decreases with as low quenching rate. To prevent the decrease of the age hardening ability, quenching is done by a method such as water quenching, which is not very efficient in an industrial situation, because the method requires such large equipment. For these alloys, reducing the quenching sensitivity helps them to be produced in a rather convenient way. For example, 6000 series alloys such as A6063 have low quenching sensitivity, thus they could be quenched by only air cooling just after extrusion and they do not need water quenching. Based on these reasons, investigations of these alloys with high copper and magnesium contents have been conducted in the past to find a way to lower the quenching sensitivity by adding transition elements such as manganese, chromium and zirconium (Kanno, Suzuki, & Itoh, 1986; Suzuki & Itoh, 1986; Kanno, Sakuma, Muromachi, & Watanabe, 1988). However, very few studies have focused on the quenching sensitivity of the lower copper and magnesium containing alloys because of their usage for structural components with high strength, and most of the past studies have used only the fast quenching method like water quenching. On the other hand, from our recent results, there is a possibility to lower the quenching sensitivity of 2000 series alloys with lower alloying elements. In this paper, the effect of the copper and magnesium contents with lower alloying elements and quenching rate, especially in case of slower quenching rate than conventional quenching method, on the age hardening behavior of the 2000 series alloys is investigated by the hardness measurement, structure observation and thermal analysis."

Indigenous people are nearly always affected when projects enter their territory. Crop and other asset compensation can help or undermine a project’s progress depending on the approach. When compensation is handled poorly, a technically viable project can get indefinitely entangled by local unrest. Stake holders associated with compensation issues include; the state, the indigenous people, non-governmental organizations, and the developer. Appreciation for the unique perspective of indigenous peoples and the influences affecting them can avert problems and prevent delays. A review of the compensation issues encountered in Ghana during its recent gold boom can assist in avoiding problems associated with handling poor and uneducated people.

With the advent of the resources boom in the late 1960s most of the larger scale resources projects in Australasia were commissioned on an æowner miningÆ basis, where the mine owners owned and operated the primary mining equipment. Then, in the 1980s with the arrival of the gold mining boom in Western Australia and elsewhere, a change occurred û most of the mining activities were carried out on a contract mining basis. Over recent years, however, there has been a marked trend amongst larger Australasian open pit mining operations back towards owner-controlled and operated mining operations. The reasons for this are many and are addressed in the paper, but centre on the concept of the owner being prepared to assume more of the mining risk in exchange for the advantage of not having to pay a contractorÆs profit margin. Where mining contracts are entered into, the older æschedule of ratesÆ format is being replaced with less adversarial and more entrepreneurial contract alternatives involving operating cost and risk sharing in a spirit of æfair dealingÆ. Leasing and maintenance issues have also been influenced in recent years by the advent of more flexible contract arrangements with equipment suppliers. Group purchasing has also had some influence for project operators. For many mine owners, the optimal risk management profile involves a practical offsetting of the assumption of mining risk on the one hand, against the removal of litigation risk and potentially reduced operating costs on the other. Potential pitfalls may arise where equipment size and type requirements vary with time or where manpower management, mining flexibility, job skills or safety exposure factors are relevant. These issues are commented on in the context of some well known examples, and an update is provided on contract mining versus owner operation in large scale Australasian open pit mining generally.

The Gosowong epithermal Au-Ag deposits, located on the island of Halmahera, North Maluku Province, Indonesia, are owned and operated by PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals, a joint venture between Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (25 per cent).The Gosowong deposit was a greenfields discovery in 1994. Subsequent brownfields discoveries, most recently in 2009, have resulted in a total endowment of more than 6 Moz Au. The three main deposits include Gosowong, Toguraci and Kencana, and as of December 2013, production comprised 5.7 Mt Au at 24 g/t for 4.3 Moz with remaining resources of 4.2 Mt Au at 13 g/t for 1.7 Moz.Mineralisation primarily occurs in multistage veins, breccias and stockwork veins, with at least four texturally- and mineralogically-distinct vein events, including: banded crystalline quartz, quartz-adularia, quartz-chlorite and quartz-sulfide stages. Vein mode, texture and mineralogy are zoned around areas of maximum dilation, vein width and vein grade. Within banded quartz-chlorite, grades of &gt;1000 g/t Au are common. Anomalous Au-Ag-Pb-As-Sb-K-Li geochemistry in rocks is commonly associated with the epithermal mineralisation. Four major types of hypogene alteration are recognised at Gosowong: silicification (quartz-illite-adularia-pyrite) within the immediate vein zone, argillic (illite-quartz-pyrite) alteration enveloping the vein zone, advanced argillic (dickite-kaolinite-quartz) alteration above and adjacent to the vein zone and within the overlying Kayasa Formation, and propylitic (chlorite-epidote-albite-calcite-pyrite) alteration within the footwall and distal to the vein zone.CITATION:Fitzpatrick, N, Harris, A, MacCorquodale, F and Wardiman, D, 2015. Comminution is one of the fundamentals of mineral processing, requiring large expenditures to be made on capital equipment, installation, power and maintenance. The trend toward lower grades and higher operating costs, mean mining operations are becoming increasingly marginal. The challenge is to improve and more importantly, utilize crushing and milling technologies that provide for reduced capital and operating costs whilst providing increased unit efficiencies. The Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill presents such an opportunity by providing many of the cost savings and production increases required by its ability to produce a finer mill feed size and realize reduced energy consumption. This paper briefly describes the operation of the Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill and reviews its benefits towards improving the efficiency of crushing and milling operations.
