A mass transfer coefficient for the removal of hydrogen from liquid aluminum by inert flush degassing has been determined experimentally at 700°C. A mathematical model has been derived, assuming transport control, which adequately describes the experimental data. The removal of hydrogen is shown to increase with decreasing bubble size, and with increasing flow of flushing gas. The presence of hydrogen in liquid metals in amounts which exceed the solid solubility at one atmosphere hydrogen pressure is highly undesirable, causing unsound ingots or castings, or resulting in difficulties during further fabrication. The removal of hydrogen from liquid metals can be accomplished by several methods, the principal two being vacuum treating and inert flush degassing. The design of a process involving either of these techniques is based on the mass transfer coefficient for hydrogen between the liquid metal and a hydrogen-dilute gas phase. In an effort to extend our knowledge in this area, an investigation of the rate of removal of hydrogen from liquid metals by inert gas flushing was undertaken. In view of the difficulties encountered with gas porosity in the casting of aluminum and aluminum alloys, and because of certain experimental advantages, liquid aluminum was selected for the study. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS The removal of gases from liquid metals, particularly steel, has received considerable attention in recent years, The first definitive work of a theoretical nature was presented by Geller1 who considered the case where equilibrium exists between purging gases and metal bath during flushing, and also deviations from this ideal case. Hulme2 has surveyed a number of experimental studies and discussed some of the practical limitations of removing dissolved gases from molten metals. More recently a number of studies have been reported on degassing of steel melts by flushing with an inert gas.3'4 Considerable work has also been reported on aqueous and organic liquid-gas systems, and an excellent summary prepared by Hovis.5 The treatment of liquid aluminum by a flushing gas to remove dissolved hydrogen has been known for several decades.6 A number of gases have been used for this purpose, including nitrogen, argon, and chlorine, or mixtures of these gases. As part of the PHX Sky TrainTM project at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, Arizona, the existing traffic lanes at the 44th Street underpass below the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) Bridge will be shifted to accommodate the people mover guideway. The proposed reconfiguration and reconstruction of 44th Street required the utilization of micropiles and permeation grouting to resist the lateral forces induced by cutting into the slope below the existing bridge abutment footing. This paper discusses the evaluation of the existing bridge abutment, including analysis of the original foundation system, and design, installation and testing of a new micropile-supported retaining wall to support the cut slope below the existing bridge abutment foundation. A monitoring program was implemented during construction to evaluate the short- and long-term performance of the bridge abutment. Instrumentation included survey monitoring points, inclinometers, tiltmeters and crack gauges. A micropile load testing program was conducted to verify design assumptions concerning micropile axial and lateral loading. Numerical analyses (using PLAXIS software) were performed to predict the short- and long-term behavior of both the abutment wall and the bridge foundations. Movement data collected from the monitoring program indicate that the wall and bridge foundations are performing satisfactorily and within the general bounds of predicted movements. The results from the numerical modeling using PLAXIS software showed that the proposed solution is deemed adequate to provide the needed global stability with an acceptable factor of safety, along with acceptable deformation.

An electromagnetic (EM) system for the location of trapped mine workers at coal-mine (300 m) depths has been developed. The use of such a system in deep mines (1-km depth) requires transmission at extremely low frequencies (ELF) and a reduction in the effective noise level beyond that which can be obtained by acceptable Integration times. Automatic-noise-cancellation (ANC) techniques reduce the effective noise level by combining several received signals that contain correlated noise. Such signals can be obtained either from a remote magnetic antenna or a local electric antenna. During Phase III of this program, real ELF noise data were acquired and used to test the ANC algorithms developed during Phase II. The ELF noise data were obtained from analog recordings made by Develco under another Bureau-of-Mines contract. Digitization was accomplished by an ND converter that was added to a GMRR computer. Phase III tasks Included preparation of software for digitization, computer-computer communication, data processing, and statistical analysis. Useable data were obtained from eleven half-hour tapes containing noise from one axis of the primary antenna and three axes of the remote antenna. The overall average Improvement in SNR was 4.1 dB. However, the average Improvements for the Individual X, Y, and Z axes were 4.2, 11.9, and -1.9 dB, which roughly follow the observed noise power. Nonlinear processing was not effective with this noise.

Over the last four years, a major collaboration between CSIRO-MIS, UCT and JKMRC has produced two significant advances in the modelling of comminution. The Universal Comminution Model (UCM) uses parametric SPH/DEM studies of comminution and separation devices to calibrate mathematical models which are suitable for industrial use. The Virtual Comminution Machine (VCM) uses the same computationally intensive techniques based on discrete element modelling (DEM) and smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) to directly model any comminution device by combining a CAD file describing the machine design, sophisticated ore characterisation methods and advanced particle scale flow and breakage simulation. The UCM should be useful for process analysis and optimisation of existing equipment and circuits while the VCM should make a major contribution to the evaluation and development of new machines. Progress to date is encouraging with several processes now well described using DEM. This paper also reports on progress towards combining DEM for particles with a realistic slurry model based on SPH for different types of comminution devices. In due course, this combination should allow accurate modelling of particle transport in wet mills to be combined with DEM models.

This paper presents an evaluation of surface resistivity techniques as a tool for delineating salt-water intrusion in Shippegan, N.B. The study consisted of resistivity profiling, resistivity soundings and a limited number of induced polarization soundings in selected areas in the Province of New Brunwick. The results from resistivity profiling indicate that when seawater intrusion occurs in a sandstone formation the resistivity contrast is sufficiently large to allow a precise delineation of the intrusion. A formula is then derived to convert resistivity values to chloride concentration in the "cone of intrusion". The results from resistivity soundings showed that shaly formations may have resistivities as low as seawater-contaminated sandstone. An indeterminacy has resulted from this resistivity overlap. A limited number of IP soundings were performed in an effort to resolve it. The results showed that IP can be of appreciable help in resistivity interpretation.

Ambientes contendo H2S e CO2 impõem condições severas a componentes fabricados em aços, já que estes podem sofrer corrosão com perda de propriedades mecânicas e falha das instalações. Uma preocupação é a quantificação dos fenômenos envolvendo difusão do hidrogênio atômico, o qual (seja pelo gás H2 em interfaces ou pela interação com ligações atômicas ou discordâncias) pode causar redução nas energias superficiais de fraturamento prejudicando ductilidade e tenacidade. Neste cenário, este trabalho investiga a fragilização por hidrogênio em um aço microligado API 5L X65 sour obtido de um tubo de diâmetro externo 32” e espessura de parede 20,6 mm fabricado pelo processo UOE. Amostras longitudinais e transversais de tração (ASTM E8/E8M) foram extraídas e imersas em solução saturada com H2S. O eletrólito empregado foi a solução A (ácido acético contendo cloreto de sódio) da norma NACE TM0284-2011, fazendo-se purga com N2 e injeções de H2S. Os tempos de imersão foram de 0, 96 e 360 horas, sendo os ensaios de tração realizados após doze dias do término da imersão. Os resultados não revelaram efeito estatisticamente relevante na resistência mecânica, na evolução tensão-deformação e tampouco no módulo de tenacidade. Entretanto, foi observado maior espalhamento dos resultados advindos de amostras submetidas a H2S. Esse comportamento sugere que o hidrogênio influenciou no micromecanismo local de fraturamento, mas com inexpressivo comprometimento das propriedades monotônicas macroscópicas. Tal desempenho pode ser fruto da microestrutura com grãos refinados e do baixo nível de inclusões encontrado, indicando poucos e uniformes sítios de ancoramento de hidrogênio irreversível.

The procedure suggested in this report is intended for the use of engineers, esters, accountants, etc., in estimating the cost of chemical-type operations. It is intended to over operating costs, not investment costs, as the latter have been covered numerous other publications. However, as capital investment costs are reflected to a high degree in operating costs, it is important to point out that accuracy of investment costs is highly essential. Therefore, all factors that might be included under plant -capital costs should be considered, such as requirements of shops, employees' housing, etc. The procedure is designed primarily for use in types of chemical oper¬ations, such as the production of synthetic liquid fuels, anhydrous ammonia, and others of like or similar nature. Yet, no attempt has been made to cover the entire chemical industry.

Titanium aluminide of composition Ti-47.5 at.% Al was prepared by melting titanium and aluminium of commercial purity with additions of precious metals of 0, 0.2, 1, 1.5 and 2 at.% content. The microstructure, hardness and oxidation properties were assessed. It was found that at 47.5 at.% Al, the microstructure of plain TiAl alloys was duplex, consisting of duplex lamellar grains and ? grains. The lamellar grains consisted of alternating lamellae of ? (TiAl) and a2(Ti3Al), with overall aluminium content in the range of 43?47 at.%. The ? grains had a aluminium content above 50 at.%. The addition of precious metals to the TiAl alloy resulted in the formation of a new phase, with a high precious metal content, occurring mostly in the ?phase, without any major change to the microstructure. Increasing the amount of precious metals resulted in an increase of the new phase amount, at the expense of the ? phase. The hardness of the different alloys was around 300HV10. Overall, the research has shown that addition of precious metals to TiAl resulted in a slight increase in hardness and a significant improvement of the oxidation resistance. This shows that alloying TiAl with precious metals, at the addition levels investigated, does not alter the mechanical properties very much, but improves oxidation resistance.

In order to ensure safe mining and reduce surface damage in shallow multiple-seam mining, the failure characteristics of interburden strata with different coal pillar offset distances between pillars in the upper and lower seams, the distribution characteristics of stress concentration in coal pillars, and the development characteristics of stratum cracks and subsidence were physically investigated and also using UDEC2D software. Meanwhile, the effect of different coal pillar offset distances on the stress concentration of coal pillars and development of stratum cracks were studied. Based on those results, a formula for safe mining and reducing surface damage was established, which provided a theoretical basis for safe and environmentally friendly mining in shallow multi-seams. According to the results of the study, the optimal coal pillar offset distance (the side-to-side horizontal distance of the upper and lower coal pillars) between the upper and lower coal seams was developed to reduce the stress concentration of coal pillars and surface damage. The results of this study have been applied in Ningtiaota coal mine and have achieved good results in safe and environmentally friendly mining.

The Nutley Quarry Trunk Sewer Project is a good example of a tunnel that went through difficult and complex ground. The 2 m (7ft.) diameter and 840 m (2,750 ft.)long tunnel passed through soft ground, mixed face, and hard sandstone. The soft ground and mixed face tunneling provided several challenges. During excavation of the tunnel, the Contractor encountered a number of unanticipated large boulders. In addition, the length of the mixed face portion of the tunnel increased by 100%. The Contractor tried various construction techniques to overcome the difficult ground conditions and complete the project. The tunneling progress was slower than expected. The Contractor claimed extra costs for differing site conditions. Through discussions and negotiations between the Contractor, Engineer, and Owner, all of the changed condition claims were settled before the construction of the project was completed. This paper addresses the difficult ground conditions, claims evaluation, and how they were resolved by cooperative efforts between the Contractor and the Owner/Engineer.

The Bureau of Mines used laminar hot air jets of l/8- to 3/4-inch diam-eter to determine the hot gas ignition temperatures of various combustible vapor-air mixtures. The combustibles were n-hexane, n-octane, n-decane, a hydrocarbon jet fuel (JP-6), and an adipate ester aircraft engine oil (MIL-L- 7808). Minimum ignition temperatures occurred at a fuel to air weight ratio of about 0.5 and were not greatly sensitive to variations of fuel concentra¬tion. Moderate variations of jet velocity also had little influence on these ignition temperatures. However, these temperatures decreased with increase in heat source dimensions (jet diameter). The hot gas ignition temperatures of the combustibles were not necessarily much greater than corresponding autoignition and wire ignition temperatures when the size (,F the heat source and the ignition criterion were the same.

A series of in situ pull test were performed on a new design friction stabilizer bolt with the objective of determining its performance characteristics. The bolt is installed while drilling, thus improving safety and significantly reducing the installation time. An optional expansion element can be inserted into the bolt to provide an end-anchorage, which further increases the bolt’s capacity. In situ tests show that the pull capacity of the 2 m long new design bolt is about 15 tons. When installed with an expansion element, the pull capacity of these bolts becomes as high as 30 tons.

The Bureau of Mines, through a program of contract and in-house research, has developed and in-mine demonstrated reasonably priced, reliable automatic fire protection systems to deal with this problem. "This paper describes the recent pilot-plant work carried out on two alternative processes capable of producing an effluent containing less than 10 pCi/L total radium-226 activity and very close to 3 pCi/L dissolved radium-226. The processes incorporate coprecipitation of radium with barium sulphate by the addition of barium chloride in continuously stirred tank reactors followed by either chemical coagulation with ferric chloride, flocculation and clarification, or polymer-aided dual-media filtration. IntroductionUranium mines in Canada have practiced radium removal from tailings basin effluents since 1965. Treatment consists of addition of barium chloride to precipitate radium as barium- radium sulphate and provision of natural or constructed settling ponds for sedimentation. This process, however, has been identified as being deficient in that it allows particulate or suspended radium-226 releases which are higher than the regulated dissolved values». Also, the large size of some of the settling ponds is believed to represent a real limitation of the present technology because of inferred difficulty in recovery of barium-radium sulphate precipitates.The Federal Government Mining Task Force established a Radioactivity Sub-Group in 1974 to assist in the development of effluent regulations and guidelines for the uranium mining industry. Among the recommendations of the Sub-Group was the need to seek more effective methods of radium removal, including development of physical/chemical treatment systems as an alternative to settling ponds. In response to the SubGroup recommendations, a bench-scale study began in March 1976at the Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC) of Environment Canada . The results of this study indicated that coagulation and flocculation of the precipitate from barium chloride addition is a viable alternative to sedimentation in settling ponds(3). The bench work was expanded and accelerated in 1977, with financial assistance provided by the Atomic Energy Control Board. Subsequently, a research program with a larger scope was developed; this program is jointly managed and funded by government and industry, as shown in Table I.One of the goals of the joint program is to develop, at pilot scale, a physicalI chemical process to reduce the radium-226 content of uranium mining and milling effluents. Target radium-226 activities for treated tailings basin effluents were set: namely, 10 pCil L total and 3 pCil L dissolved radium 226. Extensive bench-scale and pilot-scale work was conducted through 1978 and 1979 and has culminated in the development of two physical/chemical processes. This paper describes work carried out at a pilot plant which led to the selection of the two physical I chemical processes for demonstration. In short-term tests, the processes produced effluents meeting the radium-226 target activities."

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the emission control methods, including the capital investments and operating cost, necessary for further reducing lead levels in ambient air at the Glover, Herculaneum, and Buick smelter-refineries in Missouri and the East Helena, MT, smelter. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed more stringent lead in ambient air standards than those currently in effect. This report presents theoretically achievable lead emission reductions and estimated capital and operating costs. Lead emission inventories theoretically can be reduced from 1985 levels by 2,421 lb/d at the three Missouri operations by containing and filtering fugitive emissions within structural enclosures and baghouses. The aggregated capital and operating costs in 1986 dollars using conventional environmental and workplace technologies are estimated to be $250,014,100 and $18,507,800, respectively. Estimated total incremental cost is $0.063/lb as refined lead. Additional regulatory costs attributable to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSKA), U.S. Department of Labor, workplace standards are included since proposed environmental controls may otherwise degrade workplace conditions. Continuous drossing is evaluated as an alternative to conventional OSHA controls. Substituting continuous drossing for conventional work- place technology results in an estimated aggregated capital and operating costs of $258,344,800 and $15,719,600, respectively. Estimated total incremental cost is $0.062/1b as refined lead. For comparison, the average open market price of refined lead during the first quarter of 1986 was $0.184/lb.

This paper is one of a series on mining methods and costs being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. In April 19.74 the St. Joseph Lead Co., at Atlanta, Elmore County, Idaho, was mining and milling about 225 tons of gold ore daily with a total force of 150 men. The mine, which comprises the old Boise-Rochester and Monarch properties, is at an elevation of about 6,000 feet. Snow lies on the ground about 5 months each year but does net interfere greatly with local operations. However, the road to Mountain Home, the shipping point 80 miles distant, passes over a high range and usually is closed by snow from about November 15 to June 15. Heavy supplies are brought in and concentrates trucked out during the summer. In winter the district is served by a biweekly mail plane and a passenger and express plane making 4 to 6 trips weekly. Mine timber is cut locally. A plentiful supply of water is obtained from a stream brought to the property through 7,500 feet of plume.

In the early 90's a completely unknown problem was encountered at the converter Department: it was a chronic shortage of the cold copper charge needed for the second operating period. A high temperature operating regime was caused which further provoked a chain of consequences such as a drastic drop of the number of operations in campaigns. The consumption of repair bricks reached the quantity of 8.3955 kg / tonne of anode Cu. In 1994, we won the process of cold material smelting during the "copper" blowing [2]. The number of operations per campaign reached 180-200 again. Also in 1994 we won the process of smelting cold materials to obtain "tin" blowing with the purpose of completing their processing cycle [2]. During the period 1994 – 2007 a total of 107,845 tonnes of cold material were remelted to make copper and 56,794 tonnes were re-smelted to obtain "tin". Upon synthesizing these two processes, a completely new model was achieved in 2005, by Bogdan Petkovic, which entirely utilized all available energy of the Peirce-Smith (PS) converters of the Bor Copper Smelter and now represents the basis of the time cycle. The cold material now enters the converter plant, copper recovery is increased and the method itself is environmentally friendly. 167

FROM time to time articles have appeared in the technical press on the interesting subject of surface combustion. The theoretical part of the problem has, for practical purposes, received ample consideration in those articles, but the number of practical applications of surface combustion referred to has generally been very small.It is the writer's object to review some recent developments in surface combustion, and also to try to arrive at an estimate of its advantages and possibilities. It is not necessary for this purpose to dilate upon the phenomenon of surface combustion itself. Many interesting things have been said on the subject by Pro£. W. A. Bone, of Leeds, to whose researches the recent developments are largely due. A few illustrations may make clear what is meant by surface combustion.Prof. Bone, in an experiment, took a platinum crucible, which he heated in the flame of a Meker-burner. Then he turned the gas off for a second, and, opening the stop-cock again, allowed the combustible mixture to impinge upon the crucible, thetemperature of which was still well below the ignition temperature of the gas. Although no flame was visible at this stage, it was soon clear that, nevertheless, the gas and air had continued to combine, as the crucible would attain a red heat after a few seconds.Another instance of surface combustion was shown by a Mr. Fletcher, in 1882. He placed an iron ball, weighing 3 lb., on a slab of fireclay, heated it for a few seconds with a blow-pipe, and blew the flame out, leaving the gas-mixture still...
