The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the corrosion properties of certain alloys of titanium and to compare them with those of unalloyed titanium. Such information should make it possible to determine the desirability of substituting these alloys for commercially pure titanium in certain applications. Titanium-manganese, titanium-chromium-iron, and titanium-vanadium-iron alloys, with 2 types of unalloyed titanium, I consolidated by arc melting and the other by powder-metallurgy techniques, were included in the study. Tests were carried out in sulfuric, hydrochloric, phosphoric, nitric, and mixed acids and in chloride solutions. All solutions were saturated with air.

A new decarburization model for the RH system was constructed for calculating the decarburization reaction using a three-dimensional fluid dynamics program. The entire fluid flow in the RH process was calculated by evaluating the shape and volume of the plume zone, formed by Ar gas blown through multiple nozzles on the wall of the snorkel. On the basis of this fluid flow, the decarburizaiton reaction was calculated through establishing the decarburization reaction model, which considers the thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, and the decarburization sites (Ar bubble surface, bath surface, and the CO bubble fomtation at inner sites). The results from this model were compared with a real RH operation results with good agreement. Because it is possible to predict the carbon concentration at various conditions using this model, it may be useful in increasing the decarburizaiton rate. Mineral property appraisers engaged in eminent domain actions on properties for which mining is the highest and best use must be fully competent in all phases of mineral resource estimation, mine project development, and mine operations (or retain the requisite competent assistance), as well as educated in eminent domain appraisal (USPAP Competency Rule). Failure to ensure such triggers the issue of appraisal competence and demonstrates a flagrant disregard of the myriad code(s) and guidelines to which the appraiser is subject. The cavalier assertion of some vague, undefined “latitude” in the valuation process does not exonerate the appraiser from a disregard of the USPAP Competency Rule. Lack of independence (i.e., “advocacy”) in mineral property appraisal is the usual result of a weak background in mining and/or appraisal theory. While it is readily apparent to those able to recognize it in reports and testimony, judges and juries cannot be expected to detect or recognize purposefully misleading (or even fraudulent) valuation concepts or testimony. Purposeful deception by the appraiser can lead to specious over-compensation of the property owner (thus victimizing the taxpayer); or, a failure to provide appropriate and just compensation to the property owner – yet, the purpose of an eminent domain proceeding is to leave the property owner no richer or poorer as a result of the taking. This paper highlights some of the deceptive practices encountered in litigation settings and raises issues of competency, professional ethics, and the effectiveness of the inherent enforcement capabilities within those institutions awarding professional certifications. INTRODUCTION The practice of eminent domain mineral property appraisal requires (particularly with respect to undeveloped mineral properties) that the appraiser possess the requisite level of competence in all phases of mineral resource estimation, mine project evaluation, mine development, and mine operation (through closure). To the extent the appraiser lacks such competence, it is incumbent on the appraiser not only to divulge this lack of expertise but also to seek competent assistance in the performance of the appraisal. This competence or expertise can only be obtained through a combination of appropriate and relevant technical education and direct mining industry experience. There exist a number of professional certification and/or credentialing authorities that speak to such competency. In a similar manner, eminent domain mineral property appraisal (as the term implies) also requires that the appraiser possess the requisite level of competence in the practice of eminent domain appraisal. This competence or expertise can only be obtained through appropriate and relevant education, direct knowledge of appraisal theory, particularly as it relates to the concept of eminent domain, and licensure.

During the 1998/99 Asian crisis Solid Energy's export revenues collapsed from over US$70M to under US$40M. Simultaneously, domestic market uncertainty led to decreases in volumes and prices. A major new underground mine was not technically viable, and was closed, and several other mines were marginal. Less than two years later, Solid Energy and its JV partner closed a second new underground mine. The company was in financial crisis, and reported an $86M loss for 1998/99. After refinancing with stringent workout conditions it still had minimal returns due to low prices, unaffordable transportation costs and huge unrealised FX losses as the NZ dollar fell 40 per cent in value. The obvious scenario was to æcash upÆ û complete extraction at remaining mines, sell off any viable parts of the business, pay off debt and wind the company down.In 2002 Solid Energy has completed its recovery. Although margins remain slim and volatile in both export and domestic markets, it is achieving record volumes and revenues. It has paid off its shareholder loan, has minimal remaining FX losses, and cashflow is allowing further mine and infrastructure development. The key to the turnaround has been implementation of rigorous planning, analysis and decision-making in all aspects of the business. The company has a comprehensive, rolling 20-year plan used annually to update rolling five year and annual business plans. Solid Energy augments strong line management operations with rigorous standards and processes for mine planning and development, operational decision-making, and functional support. Detailed, quantitative risk analysis is used in all aspects of the business and allows comprehensive integration of opportunity and risk management across all activities in the company.Coal mining is widely perceived as an æold-economyÆ industry. But, like other successful æold economyÆ companies, the information systems and management processes used by Solid Energy are as leading edge as any in the high-tech sector. They are the key to managing to add and sustain maximum value for a company that has access to coal resources sufficient for hundreds of years.

The effect of oxalic acid, acetic acid, citric acid and EDTA on extraction of Cr (?) in soils contaminated by chromium- containing slag was investigated using a batch of incubation experiment. The results show that the pH value decreases more obvious with the increase of the amount of organic acid. The amount of Cr (?) extracted increases with increasing the amount of organic acid. When the ratio of organic acids to total Cr was 5:1, citric acid revealed the highest extraction effectiveness, followed by EDTA, oxalic acid and acetic acid, respectively. The amounts of Cr(?) extracted by citric acid, EDTA, oxalic acid and acetic acid increased by 439%, 244%, 215% and 162%.

Water for domestic consumption is an essential right of society, which must be over secured. Water reclamation and reuse provides a unique and viable opportunity to augment traditional water supplies. As a multi-discipline and important element of water resource development and management, water reuse can help to close the loop between water supply and wastewater disposal. Effective water reuse requires integration of water and reclaimed water supply functions. During the coal mining activities, large quantities of water get contaminated and loses its potability characteristics. On an average, in coal mine operation, each coal mine discharges effluents at a rate of nearly 0.5 MGD and thereby wastage of nearly 50 MGD of water takes place per day from the famous Jharia Coal Field of the Dhanbad District. In this paper, attempt has been made to control the extremely high turbidity of mine waste water by using different coagulants and it is observed that ferrous sulphate is the most effective coagulants followed by alum, ferric sulphate and lime. Also combinations of coagulants are used for getting the optimal results. Further steps were also discussed to make this water potable and a scheme of low cost water supply system of mine waste water has been suggested under the Water Management Strategies. Near misses can enhance awareness of the potential causes of injury and prompt safety management initiatives. Although most companies require near-miss reporting, the value of these reports and how they influence subsequent actions or controls to reduce on-the-job risks are unclear. Researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a case study with an aggregates company in which near-miss reports were analyzed at each of their locations over an entire quarter during the summer of 2018. Within that quarter, workers recorded 249 near misses. The analysis provides insight into ways that risk-communication and management programs can be improved to reengage workers and their situational awareness on the job.

In October 1999, Liebherr-America, Liebherr Construction and Liebherr Mining Equipment held anopen house at its Newport News, VA, plant. The open house was held to celebrate the company’s50th anniversary and to demonstrate the new TI 272mining truck. Attending the open house members of the media, vendors and company representatives from all over the world. In his introductory comments, company president Peter Eller announced Liebherr’s dedication to expanding its presence in North America. Liebherr now has 30 dealers across the United States. As part of the open house, a brief history of Liebherr was presented, beginning with its creation in1949. Liebherr engineering and sales representatives were available to answer questions.

The Bureau of Mines studied waste disposal methods a1 a coal mine in Kentucky and another in Alabama to develop cost estimates, to provide better knowledge of current practices, and to guide consideration of alternate disposal methods. Costs of the existing waste disposal systems at each mine were estimated using present-day costs of equipment and labor. Costs of waste disposal systems using alternate equipment were also estimated. Although total disposal costs were essentially the same for both operations, reclamation costs will differ because of different reclamation practices.

The final report contains a summary of the work performed under this contract, In addition to the report itself, other products were derived from this effort. Several hardware items were prototyped for use with underground belt conveyors, and a manual for installation and maintenance procedures was developed and published under separate cover. Recommendations have been included for implementation of the tools and the manual or, an industry-wide basis.

Theoretically, the main driver behind a mining operations? sourcing decision should differ from company to company, and within a company from project to project, but in reality it often relates to cost. Research confirms that there are a number of factors, including cost, to consider when choosing between in-house and outsourced mining. While the literature is rife with factors to consider, little information exists on how to apply these in practice and the relative importance of the different factors to be considered. A study was conducted to determine whether mining is truly a core competency for a mid-tier commodity specialist mining company. Furthermore, a decision-making framework for mining operations sourcing was developed, and the critical success factors that should be adhered to if outsourced mining is chosen were determined. The research showed that owner mining is not a core competency for the mining company investigated. A decision-making framework was developed using the order winner/order qualifier structure, which can be used to facilitate the mining sourcing decision. The most important tools at the disposal of a mine owner?s team to manage a contractor miner are the social and output control mechanisms, according to the critical success factors study.

Two air classification systems were built and tested as separatory devices for recovering the nonferrous metal values from shredded automotive nonmagnetic reject scrap. A horizontal air system with a capacity up to 16 tons per hour was used to obtain preliminary separations, and a smaller capacity vertical system was used as a cleaning device. Shredded automobile reject material containing aluminum, copper, and zinc values of about $55 per ton were air-classified in the horizontal elutriator. Ninety-six percent of the metal was recovered in a 74-percent metal concentrate. Tandem operation of both classifiers recovered 92 percent of the metal in an 80-percent concentrate while rejecting 87 percent of the nonmetallics. Heavy media separation of the air-classified concentrate produced an overall recovery of 91 percent of the metal in the form of a 99-percent metal concentrate.

"The recovery of gold by gravity from grinding circuits differs from virtually all other gravity recovery approaches in that stage (or unit) recoveries are low, typically 1 to 5%, but overall recoveries are generally in the 25 to 60% range, because individual gold particles are presented many times to the primary recovery unit. Full-scale recovery is difficult to predict from benchscale tests. Further, maximizing metallurgical recovery is generally not the primary objective, because of the more efficient downstream recovery circuit (flotation or cyanidation). In this paper, a new concept, the gravity recovery effort, is presented to assist in the design and optimization of gold gravity circuits. It is defined as the product of the circulating load treated by the primary gravity unit, the recovery of this unit, and the gold room recovery. Predicted gold recovery is linked to the recovery effort, the size distribution of gravity recoverable gold (GRG), the dimensionless retention time in the mill and the partition curve of GRG. A case study of economic optimization of the gravity recovery effort is presented. INTRODUCTIONPredicting gold gravity recovery from grinding circuits has always been a hit-and-miss exercise. The problem can be traced to the highly variable gravity recoverable gold (GRG) content of ores, high GRG circulating load, fraction of the circulating load treated, and performance of primary gravity recovery and gold room. Some may wish to study our Nation's romantic past; others may plan to enter the minerals industry as a career; still others may have a primary interest in conservation practices. The electrolytic zinc plant at the Bartlesville division of Z.C.A. originally used lead anodes containing only 0.25% silver because only H.G. zinc and alloy was to be produced. In 1984, a small addition of strontium carbonate was made to control the surf ace morphology of the cathodes which reduced short circuits and increased current efficiency. Later a drastic reduction in colloid addition further reduced short circuits. Increased strontium additions allowed the production of some S.H.G. zinc. Increasing the silver content of the anodes reduced the lead in cathodes only slightly. More important, the anode scale that was not removed during anode cleaning, entered the electrolyte and contaminated the cathodes with lead. A piping system has been installed to purge the contaminated electrolyte directly back to the leaching section. This has allowed the plant to produce S.H.G. zinc consistently.

Hurricane Katrina caused significant damage to transportation structures on the Gulf coast in August, 2005, including the destruction of the US 90 Bridge over Biloxi Bay, Mississippi. Part of the successful design/build proposal for the replacement bridge included a comprehensive test pile program of indicator piles and load test piles in the geotechnical investigation program. A total of 22 indicator piles were installed on the project using the pile driving analyzer to monitor the pile behavior. Five load tests were performed: two axial Statnamic, two lateral Statnamic, and one static axial. The results of the test pile program established driving criteria for production piles that included end-of-drive blow counts and pile tip elevations with an appropriate allowance for setup. The program also confirmed that the planned installation equipment and techniques of GC Constructors, a joint venture of Massman Construction Co., Kiewit Southern Co., and Traylor Bros., Inc., would install the piles to the design tip elevations before production piles began. An extensive program of restrike measurements at a range of times after initial driving of the indicator piles provided a systematic documentation of pile setup in the soil profiles on the site. These resistance values were used to develop a dimensionless setup factor ?S? as the ratio of the restrike resistance to the end of drive resistance. This factor varied from 1.5 for piles penetrating clays and tipped in sand to 3.0 for piles bearing completely in clay and helped establish an end-of drive blow count that included an allowance for setup. The CAPWAP analyses of restrike data with setup and the load test data were used to confirm the design unit side shear and end bearing values developed from the borings and static capacity calculations and to select the design pile lengths.

In 1998 the Matanuska-Susitna Borough formed the new port district at Point MacKenzie, known as Port MacKenzie, located directly across the Knik Arm from Anchorage. In 1991 PND Engineers Inc. (PND), working with the Matanuska-Susitna Borough manager and port director, envisioned a fill structure at Port MacKenzie with a 500-foot-long Open Cell? sheet-pile bulkhead face extending to EL -20 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) at the face. Now under operation the fill created 5.5 acres of tideland property using local materials for fill. The fill is protected from 2- to-3 foot-thick ice pans and 9 feet per second (fps) tidal currents by an envelope of armor rock. Construction required working in water with 30 to 40 feet of tidal variation. Construction required placement of frozen fill in water depths possibly exceeding 50 feet, creating real concerns about soil consolidation and long-term maintenance issues. A plan was prepared to consolidate the soils using Vibracompaction. Soil Density and consolidation were monitored during the work. In 2003 the port district and NPI, a wood chip export company, formalized an agreement to construct a deep water port facility at Port MacKenzie for cape-class bulk carriers. PND provided planning, studies, geotechnical investigation, design documents and construction inspection for a 500-foot-long trestle with a platform dockhead and dolphins providing 1,100 feet of dock face in EL -70 MLLW as shown in Figure 1. Design included installation of large-diameter spin-fin piles driven on a 2V:1H batter. Also included was a 300-ton tension test of smaller spin-fin piles.

The adsorption capacity of peat collected from a proposed mine development in northern Sweden has been determined using laboratory column experiments in which peat was irrigated with a simulated (acidic) waste rock dump leachate. The simulated leachate was made using a hydrogen peroxide leach of composite waste rock from the proposed mine development. The waste rock samples were composited in proportion to their predicted extractable tonnage for the mine development in order to generate a more representative leachate solution for the waste rock facility. As expected the test revealed that the peat material shows a very high affinity for attenuation with greater than 70% of Co, 90% of Ni and 95% of Cu removed from influent solutions through the majority of the tests demonstrating the potential benefits in mine water treatment. In contrast, it was found that Fe is initially released from the peat at concentrations up to 100 mg/L and can mean potential problems for the water released depending on the receiving environment. The exact mechanisms for Fe release is uncertain, though it is suspected that ion exchange / competitive desorption is responsible. Inspection of the laboratory results and drainage data from the natural peat wetland receiving drainage during overburden prestriping and mine development at the mine site are comparable, confirm the validity of the experiments, and further emphasize the potential for future use of pre-stripped peat material in managing water quality.

The soils included 65 m of rock not exceeding an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 200 kgf/cm2, 130 meters of soft clay, silt, and sand not exceeding 30standard penetration test SPT blows per 300 mm, and 220 m of rock ranging between an UCS of 400-600 kgf/cm2. The river crossing, utilizing 1778 mm OD x 19 mm wall x600 mm steel casing pipe without intermediate jacking stations, was part of a seven kilometer liquefied natural gas (LNG) transmission line in South Korea. This 440-m, 1,442-ft, river crossing was microtunneled through three different ground conditions and completed in just over three months. The crossing was achieved with an average of 25 m of ground cover and 15 m of water cover. The Kwang Yang River Crossing was part of a 7 km liquefied natural gas pipeline project for POSCO, a Korean steel producer. The microtunneling machine was custom built for this project. The microtunneling machine selected for this project was tooled with 7 button bits and 2 roller bits. None of the cutter bits were replaced during the drive. Inside the machine, before the spoils laden slurry was pump back to the surface, it would pass through an independent cone crusher. The crusher is placed in the slurry flow to make sure that none of the spoils are so large as to stop the return flow of the slurry. An additional requirement was for the inclusion of a compressed air lock. The air lock was required in the event that the cutter tools required replacement. The cutters were back loaded so that the workers would have access to change the cutters in the event of cutter failure or wear out. No intermediate jacking stations were installed for the drive. The soils included 65 meters of rock not exceeding an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 200 kgf/cm2 with production averaging between 7 and 20 mm/minute. The second zone contained 130 meters of soft clay, silt, and sand not exceeding 30 standard penetration test (SPT) blows per 300 mm with production averaging between 80 and 180 mm/minute. The third zone contained 220 m of rock ranging between an UCS of 400-600 kgf/cm2 with production averaging between 7 and20 mm/minute. The steel casing pipe was 1778 mm OD x 19 mm wall x 6000 mm long. The project profile, see Figure 1, shows the soil conditions. The hand written numbers locate just above the pipeline are the production dates. The circled numbers are the 10 pipe joint increments. SILICOSIS is a term known to almost everyone today. Yet, in spite of a great deal of study, much is still to be learned regarding the disease. Government organizations are still continuing their investigations, begun near Joplin, Mo., 25 years ago. Work is also being done in several universities, as Harvard, Pennsylvania, Rochester, and Toronto, and at least two private organizations, the Air Hygiene Foundation of America, Inc., and the Saranac Laboratories for the Study of Tuberculosis, devote most of their time to this subject. Similar studies have been and are being made in many other countries.
