The Swiss are currently building the world’s longest tunnel, the 35-mile long Gotthard Base Tunnel. At Sedrun, for the first time in tunneling, four Roadway Support Machines will drive through most difficult ground, supporting variable diameters of up to 13 m. The machines are prepared for their first deployment. At Amsteg, two Hard Rock TBMs have successfully crossed a known fault zone by applying full circle steel arches and shotcrete immediately behind the cutter head. Comparisons between Drill& Blast and Hard Rock TBM are shown.

Traditionally, roof falls are usually attributed to bad roof strata and high vertical stress related to the overburden depth. However, roof falls under shallow overburden depth are oflen caused by a high horizontal stress field. Recent studies have proven that the high horizontal stress field, if existing, plays a major role in roof stability. Also the roof conditions are related to the entry diredions under a horizontal stress field. Questions are: How to orient the entry to a favorable direction to prevent the roof falls? If the entry cannot be oriented, how to support it? Through a case study in mine A, this paper analyzes the horizontal stress effect on roof stability. The guideline for the entry orientation is given based on the results of analysis. Additionally, suggestions are made for those entries that cannot be oriented to a favorable direction.

A series of experiments were undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine the emission products of several types of conveyor belting and other combustible materials found in mines. These experiments were conducted under intermediate-scale, simulated mine conditions to determine smoke characteristics and gas concentrations. From these determinations, heat-release rates, particle sizes, obscuration rates, combustion yields, and production constants were calculated. Three types of belts were investigated: chloroprene, also known as neoprene (NP); polyvinyl chloride (PVC); and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). The belts were designated as ignitable or self-extinguishing depending on the length of the burning time and the subsequent combustion products. Under these experimental conditions, the SBR belts were the easiest to ignite. The PVC and NP belts tended to self- extinguish within a few minutes after ignition, but were still capable of maintaining a brief flaming period. These conveyor belt combustion results are compared with previous analyses of wood, transformer fluid, and coal fires. Together they form a data base by which findings from future experiments with other mine combustibles can be compared.

The Crandon deposit, located in northern Wisconsin, is a 65.8 million ton Precambrian volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit which averages 1.4% copper and 5.8% zinc. The deposit is classic in origin, mineralogy and shape. Comprehensive understanding of the geology of both the deposit and the project site has been fundamental to the credibility and success of Project feasibility studies and regulatory permit preparation. Mine development in the current investment and regulatory climate requires thorough and timely application of geologic tools. From 1977-1980 geologic activities were focused on the typical objectives of orebody delineation, reserve estimation, depositional geology, and general site investigation. Results from these programs formed the basis for the Project's preliminary feasibility studies. Since 1981 further geologic investigations have provided criteria for project design, site management, and operational permitting. Activities have included mine entry position definition drilling, developing geostatistical reserve modeling, large diameter (150 mm) core drilling for mill pilot samples, rock mecha¬nics testing, and evaluation of the glacial overburden/deposit geohydrology for computer simulation.

The Anaconda Company, through its wholly owned subsidiary The Anaconda Company (Canada) I,td., has investigated, optioned and partially developed a large tonnage of iron ore amenable to magnetic concentration. The reserves are located in north central Ontario and occur within a twenty-two mile belt of layered and intricately folded metamorphic rocks, close to the north contact of an igneous complex of granite and pegmatite. There are two main ore deposits. Briarcliffe is a steep to vertically dipping body 100 to 500 feet wide and over a mile long. The Two Mile Lake deposit is flat dipping and confined to an open, asymmetrical syncline; it is approximately a mile wide and 250 to 4.00 feet thick. On its flat easterly plunge, it is saucer-like in shape and is amenable to open-pitting for an east-west distance of several thousand feet. Magnetometer surveys, confirmed by drilling, indicate at least a three mile eastward extension of this deposit. Location and Access: The property is located in the Kowkash Mining District of northwestern Ontario, roughly forty-four miles north of the community of Nakina on the main line of the Canadian National Railroad. (Fig. 1) Access during the exploration period was entirely by airplane from Nakina. (Fig. 2) More recently, Nakina itself was connected to the highway network in the Longlac-Geraldton area. The property is roughly 190 miles by existing and proposed railroad from the Great Lakes waterway system. The Trans-Canada pipeline moving natural gas from western to eastern Canada passes through Geraldton roughly 70 miles south of the property. Topography: The surface features in the area are typical of a sizeable portion of the Precambrian Canadian Shield area. Many lakes, low swampy areas, and glacial moraine-type features are common in this recently glaciated area. The average elevation is between 800 and 900 feet above sea level, and the relief is probably less than 100 feet with the greater portion of the area less than 50 feet. The topographic "highs" are formed either by outcrops that were resistant to glacial erosion or by moraines, eskers and drumlins which were deposited upon the recession of the glaciers. The better mineralized zones, composed chiefly of quartz and magnetite, commonly form ridges resistant to erosion and weathering. Previous Work: Because of the obvious outcrop of the magnetite-rich beds and knowledge gained from early developments within the general region, it is conceivable that the presence of the iron formations has been known for a good many years. The Bureau of Mines has developed a damage-resistant brattice, intended for use as a stopping in locations where blast damage to stoppings is a problem, the roof is relatively flat, and the differential pressure across the stopping is not high. Damage-resistant brattices consist of a series of vertically hung brattice panels joined to each other by Velcro connections that improve the airtightness of the brattice. When the brattice is subjected to strong blast forces, the Velcro connections peel apart, allowing the panels to open without incurring damage. The Velcro connections can then be resealed in a matter of minutes. A preliminary test in the Bureau's Safety Research Mine and subsequent long-term testing at the White Pine copper mine in Michigan and the Retsof salt mine in New York show that damage-resistant brattices withstand blasting better than conventional stoppings, while still performing as efficient air barriers when the Velcro connections are sealed.

The Aberfoyle Tin Mine lies on a wide sloping bench about 2,000-2,500 ft. above sea level, at Rossarden, 14 miles north of Avoca, in north-eastern Tasmania. The quartz-cassiterite veins were discovered in 1916, but mining did not begin until 1926. Trenching revealed seven small tin-bearing veins within a width of 57 ft. of Palaeozoic slates and sandstones, and it was assumed that the mineralization extended beneath the adjacent cover of Permian strata, but the presence of the main vein system (the 26 Vein System) was not suspected until the Aberfoyle Fault was discovered late in 1928.The mine has now been developed on thirteen levels, to a depth of 1,350 ft. The lower limit of economic mineralization appears to lie at about the ll-level, which is 1,060 ft. vertically below the concealed outcrop of the main veins. Production of tin and tungsten concentrates began in 1932, and to date more than 550,000 tons of ore have been mined for a recovery of 8,856 tons of tin concentrates, and 3,056 tons of wolfram concentrates, valued at approximately £6,500,000.This paper reports part of an investigation undertaken by the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of C.S.I.R.O. to study the mineral composition of the ore in relation to the apparent failure of cassiterite and wolfram mineralization to extend below the present working limits of the mine, and was first issued as Mineragrapnic Report No. 639.GENERAL GEOLOGY:The deposit consists of a series of quartz veins in a northsouth trending sheeted zone, transecting folded slates and...

This paper introduces the technical characteristics, transformation scheme and production practice of the project in which Copper P-S Converter was replaced by Bottom Blowing Continuous converting for the first time, and introduces the technical achievements obtained by the project. The application practice proves that bottom blowing copper continuous converting technology can completely solve the problems of fugitive off-gas pollution in the ladle transportation, large amount of flue gas and fluctuation of flue gas caused by P-S converting. Comprehensive energy consumption and operating costs of producing blister copper, safety and environmental risks are greatly reduced, and economic, environmental and social benefits are significant. It is one of the preferred technologies for upgrade and to replace P-S converting technology. INTRODUCTION At present, more than 80% of copper production capacity is still using the P-S converting technology with a history of more than 100 years. During P-S converting process, melted copper matte needs to be transported by ladle, and it needs to rotate the furnace body several times, causing a lot of serious environmental and safety risks such as SO2 flue gas emission and low-altitude SO2 pollution. In addition, the high operating cost caused by low rate of air blowing, the short life of the refractory materials and high energy consumption during P-S converting become big problems. Other problems such as large amount of flue gas, low SO2 concentration, large fluctuation of flue gas volume and SO2 concentration, and discontinuous flue gas cause high cost of subsequent flue gas treatment are also needing to be solved. In order to solve these problems during the P-S converting, metallurgical engineer in various countries has spared a lot of efforts to develop continuous blowing process for decades. This paper introduces the most commonly used molybdenum flotation flowsheet, together with the introduction of the flotation chemistry. While Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) occurs naturally, its management poses challenges especially at the decommissioned sites. Two passive systems were designed and implemented at two different decommissioned mining sites in Canada in order to treat the seepage with ARD characteristics. One seep originating from a reclaimed tailings pond was neutral mine drainage (NMD) containing circumneutral pH and dissolved metals (e.g., nickel, zinc) in elevated concentrations. The other ARD from a tailings stack showed net acid drainage characteristics with low pH and higher metal concentrations than regulated limits. Due to the different ARD characteristics occurring at each site, different types of treatment systems were designed and implemented. Both sites experience extreme winter conditions. The NMD has been treated mainly by limestone drain and aerobic systems since 1997. The acid ARD has been treated by a system consisting of an anaerobic sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) cell, an aerobic cell and a limestone filter since 2004. As this site has no access roads, space, or power, a significant capital cost as well as sludge disposal/storage requirements would have been required to institute a chemical (active) treatment system. Both systems have been successfully treating seepage and producing a water quality year round that could comply with regulated objectives.

A process that allows selective flotation separation of low Cu/S ratio minerals (chalcopyrite and pyrite) from high Cu/S ratio minerals (bornite and chalcocite) from a mixed copper mineral concentrate under controlled oxidative-reductive potential conditions has been developed. The process has been extensively tested on samples with varying mineralogy using laboratory batch flotation tests and mini pilot plant trials.In this process, the mixed final copper mineral concentrate is purged with nitrogen, and then treated with sodium dithionite to achieve a slurry Eh in the -200 to -100 mV standard hydrogen electrode (SHE) range. Flotation was then carried out using nitrogen gas. As a result, a low Cu/S ratio concentrate (<1.3) and a high Cu/S ratio (>1.6) tailing stream were produced. QEMSCAN analysis of the flotation products showed that more than 85 per cent of the chalcopyrite and 95 per cent of the pyrite reported to the froth concentrate. Chalcocite and bornite were almost evenly distributed between the concentrate and tailing streams.Surface analysis studies, focused on the mechanism of separation, showed that at a negative redox potential xanthate and possibly dixanthogen are the dominant hydrophobic species on the surface of chalcopyrite and pyrite. As a result, the flotation of these minerals remained unaffected. In contrast, a much lower concentration of xanthate species on the surface of chalcocite and bornite particles was observed. Therefore, it is likely that at low Eh the copper xanthate complex desorbs from the chalcocite and bornite surfaces, causing a decrease in surface hydrophobicity and the diminished floatability of chalcocite and bornite.CITATION:Ametov, I, Harmer, S, Grano, S and Alford, R, 2014. Hainan Province (Hainan Island) in South China hosts numerous Mo-polymetallic ore deposits that are genetically related to Cretaceous granitoid intrusions. Laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U-Pb dating and molybdenite Re-Os dating reveal three metallogenic episodes: the late Early Cretaceous (ca 112 Ma), the late Early to Late Cretaceous (ca 95–106 Ma) and the Late Cretaceous (ca 72–89 Ma). The third mineralising episode might represent the youngest Mo mineralising event in East China. Results from this study demonstrate that Mo mineralisation on Hainan Island occurred under an extensional setting that was prevailing in the late Mesozoic (ca 180–67 Ma) in South China, which was likely due to the slab rollback of the subducted palaeo-Pacific plate beneath the South China continent.CITATION:Xu, D R, Hu, G C, Wu, C J, Fu, Y R and Chen, H, 2015. Thermodynamic properties of the solutions of hydrogen in metals and carbon in austenite were investigated and it is possible to predict the interstitial solubility in these systems over relatively wide ranges of temperature and solute activity. Monte Carlo methods were used to compute the arrangements of interstitial atoms on the tetrahedral sites in body centred cubic metals and the octahedral sites in face centred cubic metals. It was shown that the non-configurational entropies of solution of hydrogen in metals can be interpreted as being principally vibrational and on this basis the potential value of the isotopic solubility ratio theory in indicating the compositional variation of these non-configurational entropies was discussed. The need for future work along these lines is pointed out.

Since 1922 when the Bureau of Mines issued a report2 covering the slate industry in detail, changes in technology have taken place which have an important bearing on the industry. The present paper comprises a record of these changes. Though the value of slate, for roofing, structural, blackboard, sanitary, and electrical uses is generally recognized, it has many competitors. To meet this constantly increasing competition producers are promoting economies in manufacture, and improving processes, thereby lessening costs of production, and are placing on the market products of the highest possible quality, thus creating satisfaction and confidence on the part of the user. This endeavor to place the industry on a better basis, both as regards processes and products, is shown in the recent developments in technology which are presented herein. """Rigid inclusions"" are a consolidation method that provides improvement of soft soils thanks to the installation of cylindrical columns made up of a material with significant and permanent cohesive properties, whose stiffness is 500÷5000 times greater than the surrounding natural soil’s. ""Rigid inclusions"" find their application in marginal areas (reclamations, polluted sites) to ensure stability of adjacent structures during construction of new buildings and to reduce the impact of natural disasters (liquefaction in the event of earthquakes, embankment collapse in the event of floods). This paper analyses the “rigid inclusion” construction method, related materials and equipment. Moreover, two performed projects will be illustrated. The first is the restoration of Lungarno Torrigiani Embankment in Florence, Italy. In May 2016, the Torrigiani embankment underwent a structural collapse causing a 3 m. displacement of the riverbank towards the Arno River. “Rigid inclusions” (with 300 mm diameter) have been used to re-compact the loose soil and create a stable working platform for the equipment. The second project illustrates the use of “rigid inclusions” (800 mm diameter and maximum depth of 36.6 m) to control the settlement of a new automatic cold store (30 m high with a 65 x 120 m foot print) for fresh frozen vegetables.RIGID INCLUSIONSIn general, the word ""inclusions"" means a type of consolidation that improves the strength of a soil mass through the inclusion of elements constituted by a material having better characteristics than those of the surrounding natural ground, to improve the overall mechanical characteristics of the treated soil. Inclusions are ""rigid"" when the material introduced into the ground has significant and permanent cohesive properties (concrete or cement mortar) and a significantly higher stiffness (500 ÷ 5000 times) than that of the surrounding natural ground.Typically, medium-small diameters (from 300 to 800mm) with low percentages of treatment (from 2% to 10% of the volume of soil) are employed, ensuring a high quality and consistency of the obtained product, both in terms of diameters and elastic modulus.According to the scope of the project and in urban areas, ""rigid inclusion"" columns can also be performed by means of small diameter drilling rigs (micropiles), weighing less than 20-25 tonnes."

Ten Methane Monitoring Systems and Machine Control Circuits were examined and tested per the requirements in CFR Title 30, Parts 18 and 27, the Standard UL 913 and the document "Test Requirements For Instruments or Apparatus to be Considered for M.E.S.A. Intrinsically Safe Certification (Tentative)". The test results indicate that none of the products complied with all parts of all requirements as interpreted by Underwriters Laboratories Inc.

A comparative study has been made by the Bureau of Mines of several analytical methods for determining carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides in toxic gases produced by the detonation of explosives. Laboratory and field methods and detector-tube devices are described. Analytical results are compared, and reliability of the various methods is discussed. INTRODUCTION In all underground mining there is ever-present danger to persons from possible overexposure to carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides created by explosives or blasting agents. These health hazards, recognized for many years, led to the early establishment by the Bureau of Mines of specific requirements regarding fumes generated by explosives authorized for use in underground coal mines in the United States.3

Despite observations of spalling and damage of mine excavation wall rock in the Bushveld Complex (BC) over the passage of time, there have been very few time-dependent or creep tests carried out in South Africa on rock, particularly on BC rock types. The research described in this paper deals with the investigation of stress and strain conditions influencing spalling of wall rock in BC mine excavations, and the influence of time on the tensile strength of several BC rock types. Time-dependent laboratory testing of BC rocks was carried out in indirect tension. The results show that the magnitude of the tensile strength of BC rock types is approximately 5% of their uniaxial compressive strength magnitudes. The average long-term uniaxial compressive strength of the BC rocks, interpreted from the axial stress-volumetric strain graphs, is 56% of the UCS value. The long-term tensile strength is shown to be less than 70% of the normal tensile strength. Extension strains at tensile strength failure ranged between 0.16 and 0.21 millistrain. Values corresponding with the long-term tensile strength are less than 70% of this range, namely, 0.11 to 0.15 millistrain. These results represent new knowledge, since such rock testing and analysis does not appear to have been carried out previously on BC rock types. Elastic numerical modelling was carried out to illustrate the extents of tensile stress zones and extension zones around of typical BC mine excavations. The models showed that large zones of extension strain can occur around BC excavations, and that the magnitudes of the extension strain can substantially exceed the critical values determined from the laboratory testing. The implication of this is that there are substantial zones surrounding BC mine excavations that will be prone to time-dependent spalling conditions and perhaps more significant failure.
