Near-surface temperature measurements in two granite quarries show that diurnal temperature variations are significant to a depth of 1 or 2 feet, and annual temperature variations are significant to a depth of at least 25 feet. As a result, ground stress anomalies due to temperature exist near the surface, and their magnitude depends upon the time of day and the time of year. Rock stress and corresponding temperature measurements were made in one granite quarry over a rock temperature range of 33° to 81° F. Measured rock temperatures show good agreement with values predicted from one-dimensional heat flow theory. Calculated and measured stress-temperature coefficients for the two granites in this study are given. Thermally induced stress variations in near-surface rocks tested were as large as 1,690 psi from combined daily and seasonal temperature changes.

San Juan which owns and charters vessels for the bulk ocean transportation of iron ore, petroleum products, coking coal, slurry, salt and other commodities.

Masbate Gold Mines, dormant since WWI I, are now back in operation. The ore treatment plant incorporates carbon-in-pulp processing, utilized because of the ready availability of coconut shell charcoal in the Philippines and the high clay content of the ore. A detailed description of the plant, including the surprisingly fast and efficient alcohol stripping facility is presented. Operating data for the plant is provided together with an interesting performance evaluation of mechanical versus air- lift agitated leach tanks.

Platinum metal was first utilized by the Inca civilization in South America where it was found in alluvial deposits along the San Juan and Atrato rivers that lie between the Andean mountain range in Colombia and the Pacific Ocean. The nuggets found in these rivers average between 77% and 86%platinum, 7%?8% iron and small amounts of copper, gold and other Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). The Incas often alloyed platinum with copper to increase its workability and fabricated various ornaments from it.

The paper describes an improved process for the recovery, purification, and concentration of copper values from acidic dump leach liquors. The process employs a new liquid ion exchange material (LIX® 64 reagent) capable of separating copper values from iron and other impurities common to dump leach liquors in the typical pH range of 1.4-3.0. Properties and performance of the reagent are discussed. Design scale-up information for both pilot plants and commercial installations, including preliminary economics, are presented. Economic considerations include the production of electrolytic copper from the purified copper aqueous concentrate. INTRODUCTION Since the commercial acceptance of the liquid ion exchange process in the mineral processing industry, it has been predicted that a wide selection of chemical reagents to efficiently and economically separate many metals in solution under a wide range of conditions would be commercially available. Several years ago, General Mills began a basic research and development program to determine if it were possible to develop a reagent to extract economically metallic ion from existing process streams. Progress toward reaching this objective was reported in late 1963, when development of quantities of LIX -63 reagent, a highly selective reagent for the extraction of copper, was introduced. The properties of this reagent are described in a previous paper.' The development work with this reagent indicated that perhaps the largest potential application for a copper extractant, the treatment of acidic dump leach liquors, would not be economically possible with LIX-63 because of limitations of the reagent to extract copper below a pH of 3.0. The relatively small pH adjustment required with LIX-63 would result in a significant processing cost and the undesirable precipitation of ferric hydroxide from the liquor. This pointed to the need for another copper extractant which would extract copper from dump leach liquors without pH adjustment. General Mills was successful in synthesizing a molecule which does not have the pH limitation of the LIX-63, yet possesses the selectivity-solubility properties required of a metallic extractant. The resulting LIX-64 reagent broadens the pH range from which copper can be effectively extracted and separated from other metallic impurities. Of special significance is the fact that the reagent, LIX-64 was developed by combining the technical requirements of a specific problem in hydro-metallurgy with theoretical organic and physical chemical principles.

"The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the dosage of sodium hypochlorite as activator on the flotations of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, with a focus on activation-flotation kinetics. Four flotation kinetic models were applied to test data using 1stOpt statistical analysis software to estimate the relationships between the maximum flotation recovery rates for the depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the flotation rate constants and the sodium hypochlorite dosages. Within the range investigated, the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite were obtained at 2.5 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with zinc recovery rate of 93.8 percent and 3 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with copper recovery rate of 94.6 percent, respectively, after four minutes of flotation. A second-order model with rectangular distribution of flotabilities gave the best fit to test data collected at various sodium hypochlorite dosages. For the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the respective equations of their flotation models were derived and presented.IntroductionCyanidation tailings are the solid residues generated by gold plants that use cyanide to extract gold (Lv, Ding and Qian, 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013). Because of increasing demand for gold, the Chinese gold industry has developed rapidly, with production amounting to 451.799 tons in 2014, an increase of 5.5 percent from 2013. Chinese gold production has been the highest in the world for eight consecutive years. As a result, more than 2.45 million tons of cyanidation tailings are estimated to be discharged into tailings ponds every year (Li et al., 2010; Lv, Ding and Qian et al., 2015; Wang et al., 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2012), and approximately 300 million tons of cyanide tailings are stockpiled in China, with the potential to cause serious environmental pollution as well as death to wildlife (Adams and Lloyd, 2008; Donato et al., 2007; Hewitt, Breuer and Jeffery, 2012; Velasquez-Lopez et al., 2011; Stephen et al., 2009; Zagury, Oudjehani and Deschenes, 2004). Concerns over cyanidation tailings are not exclusively environmental but also economic, as tailings occupy considerable land area, and tailings storage facilities increase the production costs of gold enterprises (Donato et al., 2007). Tailings often contain other valuable metals such as zinc, lead and copper. For example, the cyanidation tailings of Gaoyao Hetai Gold Plant in Guangdong Province contain 2.5 percent copper (Cu), 0.31 percent lead (Pb), 0.23 percent zinc (Zn) and 15.36 percent iron (Fe) (Shi, 2008), and the tailings of Tianshui Gold Plant in Gansu Province contain 1.94 percent Cu, 5.96 percent Pb, 0.27 percent Zn and 24.62 percent Fe. Cyanidation tailings have therefore been increasingly viewed as a secondary resource rather than waste."

In redesigning the cyanide plant at Mount Torrens, in conjunction with Mr. L. W. Grayson, the manager, several minor alterations were introduced in order to have the operations under thorough control, and these having proved serviceable may be of sufficient interest to merit a description here. The lixiviation vats, though only 8 feet in diameter, were retained, but the pipes leading away from the bottom were reduced from two inches to half-an-inch in diameter, and had a fall to the zinc boxes of about 4 feet. As these small pipes were completely filled by the solutions fiowing away from the vats, they exerted a suction equal to their fall and thus hastened the rate of flow, so that tailings containing a larger proportion of slimes could be treated than was possible where the larger pipes were used, as, there not being sufficient fiow of solution to keep the latter filled, no suction could be obtained with them. It was found that with'most of the tailings treated a sufficient flow could be obtained from the half-inch pipes when the taps on, them were only one-third to half open. The lower end of each of these pipes was connected by means on indiarubber tubing with the sille hole of 11 in aspirator bottle, and to the mouth of this bottle a few feet of similar tubing was connected, so that the solutions coming through could be directed into either of the fixed tubes leading respectively to the waste water tank the strong solution zinc boxes or the weak solution zinc boxes.In working the vats, the following method was found to give good results. While filling the vats with tailings the taps were left open, so that the water might drain off into the waste water tank the surface of the tailings was carefully levelled. When the strong solution was run in at the top, the air contained in the interstices of the tailings was forced through the half-inch pipe at the bottom as a strong blast, instead of, as I believe js usual, escaping by means of channels formed by it through the tailings, and thus tending, it would appeal, to render the disposition of the tailings less even and to make.

Elemental sulfur and volatilization kiln slag(VKS)containing heavy-metal produced by smelter factories were used to produce sulfured building material. The effects of heating mode, material proportion (MSulfur:MVKS), size of waste particles and ratio of aggregate to filler(A/F) on the mechanical properties and leaching toxicities of solidified stuff were investigated. The optimal conditions for the solidification are stepped heating mode, 3:7 ratio of MSulfur to MVKS, particle size less than 150µm and 3/17 ratio of A/F. Under the above optimal conditions, the compressive strength of solidified stuff rises to 35 MPa, and water absorption is down to 4%-6%.Furthermore, when NaOH is applied as an additive in the process of solidification, the 2+concentrations of most heavy metals except Pb have reached the national leaching toxicity standard. The results of X-ray diffraction reveal that sulfured solidification is caused by the physical encapsulation rather than chemical transformation.

This paper discusses the revamp and expansion of Atlantic Copper's (formerly Rio Tinto Metal) copper smelter located at Huelva, Spain. The plant was expanded from 150,000 to 270,000 tpy new copper in anodes, and from 133,000 to 215,000 tpy cathodes. Lurgi successfully executed this contract on a lump-sum, turnkey basis in just 19 months. The Lurgi on-site task force performed this work in close cooperation with Atlantic Copper's personnel, with a minimum of disruption in the plant's ongoing operation. The contractual performance parameters were achieved to the client's satisfaction shortly after the mechanical completion of the respective plant sections.

For tax purposes a mining company is a New Zealand company whose principal source of income is from the business of mining, or exploring for certain specified minerals in New Zealand. New Zealand tax law distinguishes between a non-resident mining operator and a mining company, with the only major difference in tax treatment being the corporate tax rates. New Zealand mining companies are taxed at 28 per cent, whereas non-resident mining operators are taxed at 33 per cent of taxable income. These provisions also apply to the petroleum mining industry. Individuals who carry on the business of mining are also specifically defined in the Act. They are termed as 'resident mining operators'. Non-resident mining operators are non-residents of New Zealand who carry on mining ventures as a business in New Zealand. Mining ventures are defined as the exploring, searching and mining of specified minerals, including development work carried out for profits. Similar provisions apply to the petroleum mining sector. Specified minerals are defined in the Income Tax Act 1976 ('the Act') and while no useful purpose is obtained by listing them in the paper, they include a larger number of industrial and commercial minerals. The Minister of Finance is also empowered to add to the list by publishing his determination in the Gazette.

"This paper presents the results of in-situ tests conducted on a set of under-reamed piles in a silty sand deposit. Three piles (i.e. vertical, vertical with one bulb and vertical with two bulbs) of diameter 0.2 m were cast upto a depth of 5 m. The pile cap had four foundation bolts cast into it so that a mechanical oscillatormotor assembly could be mounted centrally on it. The oscillator-motor assembly was used to generate purely sinusoidal dynamic forces, in either horizontal or vertical directions. For both horizontal and vertical vibration cases, it was observed that (i) the natural frequencies decreased with an increase in the excitation force level, (ii) for the same excitation level, the natural frequencies as well as the maximum amplitude of vibration are almost the same irrespective of the pile geometry i.e. number of bulbs in the pile, indicating that the full pile length is not being excited. For the vertical vibration case, the soil-pile stiffness at frequencies, before resonance, were observed to be higher than those at frequencies after resonance. In the horizontal vibration case, the stiffness of the soil-pile system was found to be decreasing with an increase in the excitation force level. The damping ratio was found to be increasing with an increase in the excitation force level.INTRODUCTIONUnder-reamed piles are piles, normally upto a depth of 6 m, with one or more bulbs along the pile stem. These have been used for structures like transmission towers, structures on expansive soils etc. for a very long time, however it is only in the last 30 years that dynamic response of a pile has been studied. Evaluation of dynamic soil-pile interaction is a very complex problem as the conditions and properties of soil are highly variable and unpredictable. Various models and approaches have been suggested by various investigators for evaluating the dynamic soil-pile interaction problem, but most of them are based on the assumptions that the behaviour of soil is linear and the soil surrounding the pile is strongly adhered to it. But in practice, it is not so. The soil surrounding the pile is always somewhat loosened and undergoes some deformation when a sinusoidal load is applied. This causes the soil-pile system to behave nonlinearly.In earlier studies by Novak, (1974), Novak and Aboul-Ella, (1978) etc. a linear elastic behaviour of soil was assumed. This approach was very useful in understanding the mechanism of soil-pile interaction to a large extent. Subsequently various models were suggested like the lumped mass models with nonlinear discrete springs, dashpots and friction elements Matlock et al. (1978), weak cylindrical zone around the pile model Novak and Sheta, (1980), ideal boundary zone model with non-reflective interface, Han and Sabin, (1995) etc. These approximate solutions give an idea about the mechanism of dynamic pile-soil interaction to a large extent. However, in reality both separation and slippage can occur due to the formation of a weak bond at the contact surface between the soil and the pile when a dynamic load is applied. In addition, the soil column adjacent to the pile experiences large deformations under dynamic loads and thus behaves nonlinearly.Some computer aided model studies on the dynamic response of under-reamed piles have been reported, however, very few insitu dynamic tests on under-reamed piles are reported. Dynamic tests on piles were carried out by Novak and Grigg (1976) on small scale single piles and pile groups in the field. Similar field tests on small scale piles were conducted to study the nonlinear behaviour of a single pile and a pile group under strong harmonic excitation by Han and Novak (1988), Han and Vaziri (1992), Burr et al. (1997), Manna and Baidya (2010) etc. The majority of these experimental studies were focussed on the response of the specific pile groups and compared with the results of a single pile. In emergency management, the effects of stress on the performance of emergency personnel, typically have been ignored or regarded as too enigmatic to quantify. This paper discusses the concept of Critical Incident Stress in responders to emergencies. It presents the rationale for considering stress as a significant factor in the management of emergencies. It is proposed that Critical Incident Stress Debriefing in a disaster can improve the effectiveness of response teams on site, their turnaround time on site, and post-disaster time off the job. Critical Incident Stress intervention also can mitigate potential deleterious emotional effects associated with emergency work. This paper, prepared by a U.S. Bureau of Mines researcher, offers some ideas to the mining industry in general, to mine rescue team trainers, and to developers of program simulations on the specific issue of how people, time, materials and space may be factored into a plan for emergency management. The impact of stress on emergency workers is, presented as a missing component in present emergency management models.

[Rock bursts are phenomena associated with mining operations, particularly with deep mining, although they occur throughout a wide rump, of depth, from 600 feel downward. The intensity is usually in direct proportion to the depth, varying from a loosening and sloughing off to a violent rupture, giving rise to the term, "explosive rock." The more or less violent breaking of rock in mine working, tins been variously designated as " flaking," "pressure hoists," "strain bursts," "bumps," "quakes," and "air blasts," which indicate opinions as to cause and effect. The term "air blast" lots probably beat most widely used, and naturally so, as a more or less rapid movement of air often accompanying the more violent phenomena of rock failure. Furthermore, there is an implied if not definitely expressed degree of magnitude in the action designited by a given term and in the cause and character of the action. For example. flaking, pressure bursts, and quakes are terms ranged to indicate action of increasing magnitude; and pressure bursts, strain bursts. bumps, and quakes are ranged according to the cause and character of the action.]

One area of study in the Coal Mine Injury Analysis project was to illustrate and enhance the ability of mine safety management personnel to apply analytical techniques to injury experience data and to justify requests for funds for safety enhancement actions on a cost/benefit and other quantitative basis. Four volumes of this final project report detail (1) the objectives and scope of the mine safety management research, (2) the results of literature review, and case studies, and (3) models developed for mine safety management. The four volumes are titled as Volume III: Mine Safety Management, Volume IV: Analytical Techniques for Mine Safety Management; Volume V: Mine Safety Management Case Studies and Volume IX: Training Cost Model. In this volume, the quantitative procedures that have been developed for the mine-specific analyses of accident/injury experience data are presented and their applications are demonstrated in a summary form through case study examples. The quantitative procedures will aid mine safety management personnel to develop focused accident prevention strategies including training, as well as to justify the investment in such proactive programs through cost-benefit analyses.

With the arrival of the Spanish in the early 1700s, platinum was labelled a nuisance for the Spanish in their quest for alluvial gold because it concentrated with the gold and had to be removed by either extended amalgamation or by hand sorting. It was at this time that platinum received the root of its current name for the Spanish referred to it as platina del Pinto, platina being the somewhat derogatory diminutive of plata (silver). Pinto was a river in Colombia where the Spanish first distinguished it. The English eventually adopted ?platina? and it is only in recent times that the Latin name platinum has been accepted as the metal?s common English name. From its first introduction to European scientists in 1740, platinum was unappreciated because of its brittle nature and difficulty of working and as a result had little commercial value. Its ability to be dissolved in gold did lead to some counterfeiting of gold bullion and even to the debasement of gold currency.

A process for making electrolytic copper of high quality from copper flotation concentrates is described. The concentrates are first slurried and then subjected to a high-temperature, high-pressure, oxidation-leaching operation under controlled conditions. The resulting slurry from the oxidation-leaching operation is cooled or flashed to atmospheric pressure and then subjected to a solids-liquid separation. The separated liquor, containing the recovered copper values, is cooled and then fed to an electrolytic deposition operation where metallic copper cathodes of high purity are produced. The spent electrolyte is then subjected to a sulfide treatment to precipitate the residual amounts of copper not deposited in the electrolytic cells. The precipitated copper sulfide is recovered and recycled in the form of a slurry to the initial stages of the process.

The answer has been the subject of many textbooks. Dr. Ken Blanchard, author and consultant, addressed this issue concisely when he said that effective managers and organizations must do two things, ""get results and develop people"". lPeople development at IOC is best illustrated through its supervisory training and management development programs. For the past twenty-five years IOC has been recognized as an industry leader in the training field. Periodic studies have played their role in establishing and maintaining this distinction. For example, in 1974, the company decided to review and up-date all its training programs. At this time, it established its own Task Force on Training and this resulted in the development of many of our present programs. Today, Supervisory Training (i.e. for first and second level management) at the Carol Project in the Labrador City area consists of various programs including: New Foreman Induction, Foreman Entrance School, Basic Management Skills, Management II, and Effective Presentations."

NO physical impairment can be more serious than the partial or complete loss of sight. With reasonably good eyesight, a person is equipped to care for life and I limb, provided a rational measure of t caution is manifested. When the sight of one eye is lost or badly impaired, one-half of this God-given asset is gone, and extreme care must be taken to prevent the tragedy of total darkness that closes out the beauty of sky, field and mountain, the faces of relatives and friends, and either removes entirely or in part one's capacity to produce and earn. During 1933, The Union Pacific Coal Co., operating ten coal mines in Wyoming, decided to undertake a visual survey of all of its mine operating officials and employees. Although the cost of workmen's compensation paid because of eye injuries was material, the management was more deeply concerned with the social loss and the suffering resulting from the many eye injuries. As every element of coal production cost must be scrutinized, accurate data on all accidents, with the workmen's compensation paid therefor, are carried forward monthly. The number of accidents to eyesight and the resultant compensation paid are shown in Table 1 for nine calendar years:

This paper describes the grinding circuits installed at two remote sites in northern Canada. One is Cominco's Polaris Project at Little Cornwallis Island; a barge-mounted lead/zinc concentrator. The other is Echo Bay Mines' Lupin Project at Contwoyto Lake, 400 km northeast of Yellowknife, a gold mine, all components of which had to be flown to the site. Logistics and considerations of operating and maintenance presented challenges which were met by innovative design. The evolution of the grinding circuits is discussed. Both plants are operating at design throughput.
