It has been repeatedly emphasised that this growth in the mineral industry will form the basis of future economic development. Currently the mining and mineral processing industries use some 32% of the annual primary energy consumption in Australia. This share, although large even now, will increase with the realisation of the 1980's production expansions to 40% by 1985. Two metal industries dominate the energy scenario; iron and steel and aluminium. Major expansions in the local industry will be dominated by the aluminium industry. When bronze is melted in open-flame furnaces a considerable amount of slag is formed during the melting operation. This slag may be incidental to the melting practice or it may be formed intentionally by slag-forming constituents added to the furnace charge to provide a covering for the melted metal When this slag is removed from the furnace, it contains, in addition to the free metal carried with it by the skimming operation, a considerable amount of metal as oxide either combined or mechanically mixed with it. By the usual crushing and washing methods this metallic oxide generally goes to the tailings pile, so diluted by other foundry waste that its recovery is economically impossible. If this furnace slag is not inixed with other foundry waste, practically all of the metal oxide as well as the free metal may be recovered by some form of smelting operation. The first side of the problem to be considered is the amount of slag produced. It may not be true that the majority of foundries have no record of the amount of slag made, but it is certainly true that a very great many either have no record or pay little attention to it. Usually the collection of furnace slag for one normal week's run will be sufficient to determine the advisability of its being handled in a different manner from the crushing and concentrating generally employed. If a large representative sample of the accumulation is crushed and concentrated and the recovery compared with the results of a careful assay, it will be found that a large percentage of the total metal content was lost in the washing process. The percentage of loss will be greater than the metallic oxide content, as some free metal in extremely fine particles always is carried away in grains of slag. From such a comparison, it may be determined whether or not the slag should be melted, sold or treated as before. An example of an actual test of this kind is given below. In a foundry melting 50,000 to 80,000 Ib. of bronze per day, a week's accumulation of furnace slag and ladle skimmings amounted to 16,500 1b.—over three times as much as the foundry superintendent estimated before the accumulation was made. In accordance with the 57th section of the Explosives Act, 1875, the following report on the working of the Act during the year ending December 31, 1903, is submitted. There have been no modifications of the law during the year. No complaint is made of any falling off in the general condition of factories and magazines, and in one instance only during the year have legal proceedings been taken for any irregularity. The occupiers of factories and magazines have invariably shown perfect readiness to remedy any defects, and the managers have themselves in many instances introduced improvements tending towards greater safety. The number of deaths (5) from accidents by fire or explosion in the manufacture of explosives is below the average for the decade (6•4). Looking to the large number of persons employed in this trade, the number of deaths is not excessive and will compare favorably with the death-rate in other dangerous trades. Notwithstanding the large increase in the manufacture of explosives, the average number of deaths has greatly decreased since the passing of the Explosives Act, whereas the number of fatal accidents with explosives under conditions to which the Act does not apply appears to increase with the extension of trade.

Organo-sulphur-based collectors (eg xanthates, dithiocarbamates and dithiophosphates) are widely used in the flotation of sulphide minerals. Xanthates (ROC(=S)Sû), for example, adsorb strongly at sulphide mineral surfaces, in a reaction that is electrochemically coupled with the reduction of dissolved oxygen. One of the oxygen reduction products, hydrogen peroxide, reacts directly with dissolved xanthate, leading to its oxidative decomposition. Experimental work has been conducted, using ethyl xanthate, to understand the molecular mechanism by which hydrogen peroxide reacts with xanthates. A number of degradation products have been identified, some of which have not been reported previously. This oxidative decomposition reaction pathway is discussed in the broader context of xanthate decomposition in flotation systems. One of the identified ethyl xanthate decomposition products, ethyl perxanthate (ROC(=S)SOû), has been observed in the process water of a number of mineral processing operations. The interaction of this molecule with goethite (α-FeOOH) particles, typical of that found in tailings dams, has been studied in more detail using attenuated total reflectance (ATR)-FTIR. The ethyl perxanthate molecule has been found to coordinate to iron (FeIII) at the goethite surface, and undergo a surface-catalysed decomposition process. In the presence of both PbII and goethite, a ternary surface complex is formed, where ethyl perxanthate is coordinated directly to surface adsorbed PbII atoms. The results obtained give some insight into the environmental fate of ethyl xanthate in tailings streams, and a basis on which to consider the environmental importance of such species in tailings dams. Strategies for the destruction of residual xanthate levels in waste water streams are discussed in terms of the likely reaction products.

India is targeting to boost its electrical capacity from 100 GW to 200 GW within the next 10 years. The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has decided in2001 to take execution of the 800 MW Stage-II of the prestigious 2,051 MW Parbatihydrol electric project in Kulu district of the northern province Himachal Pradesh. Two parallel 30° inclined underground pressure shafts of 1.542m in length each will be excavated in different geological formations and lined with hexagonal concrete segments by a hard rock double shield TBM. That kind of heading will be a novelty to India and an innovative method for inclined pressure shafts. The 4.88m Mitsubishi DSTBM will be assembled underground on a swivelling steel platform especially designed for the launching as well as for the acceptance of the TBM in the upper cavern of each shaft. The hexagonal segmental lining system causes a significant higher job safety than an open TBM with conventional support. Each ring consists of four honeycomb segments with 20 cm thickness. After finalisation of the excavation a steel liner will be installed and concreted. The Joint Venture Jäger-Seli will perform the two pressure shafts as a sub-contractor for the Indian company Gammon India Ltd.

A utilização de briquetes de misturas de carvão fóssil e biomassa em substituição ao coque como agente redutor pode contribuir para a diminuição das emissões de CO2 à atmosfera no processo de fabricação de ferro através da substituição de parte do carvão fóssil por carvão vegetal. O objetivo deste artigo é identificar quais são as principais variáveis que influenciam a produção de briquetes de alta qualidade a partir de misturas de carvão fóssil e carvão vegetal. Os briquetes foram fabricados em matriz cilíndrica, compactados em prensa hidráulica e tratados termicamente em forno vertical aquecido com resistência elétrica sob atmosfera de nitrogênio. Foi investigada a influência da composição da mistura, da taxa de aquecimento e do tamanho de partícula do carvão fóssil. Os briquetes com composição na faixa de 10% a 15% de carvão vegetal moído e peneirado em partículas menores que 325 mesh apresentaram maior resistência à compressão. Foi observado que o efeito do envelhecimento do carvão influencia na qualidade do briquete, pois diminui sua resistência à compressão; as dimensões finais dos briquetes após tratamento térmico diminuíram quando a velocidade de aquecimento é menor; ao se aplicar maior velocidade de aquecimento os briquetes apresentam inchamento.

"The existing Rondout West Branch Tunnel (RWBT) is part of the Delaware Aqueduct which has been in service since 1944 and accounts for more than 50 percent of New York City’s water supply. In early 2015, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection contracted Kiewit-Shea Constructors, AJV (KSC) to construct the Rondout West Branch Bypass Tunnel project (Rondout) in order to mitigate the leakage of 132 million L/ day (35 million gpd) of water from two areas of the existing tunnel; the Roseton and Wawarsing areas.The scope of the Bypass Tunnel 2 project is separated into two distinct phases. Phase 1 consists of completing the shaft sinking to a depth of approximately 274 m (900 ft) at shaft 5B, 213 m (700 ft) at shaft 6B and the excavation of approximately 3,850 m (12,500 linear ft) of tunnel at a diameter of 6.6 m (21 ft 7 in). This phase also includes the installation of 2,804 m (9,200 linear ft) of 4.8 m (16 ft) diameter steel interliner pipe through the new bypass tunnel with cast-in–place concrete liner for a finished diameter of 4.2 m (14 ft). Access chambers at the top of shafts 5B and 6B will be constructed for access and housing of the mechanical and electrical equipment for supporting pumps and valves.Included in phase 2 is the additional excavation from shafts 5B and 6B to the RWBT, and the drainage tunnel to remove ground water infiltration from RWBT. This work will be completed during a scheduled shutdown of the RWBT and will include approximately 31 m (100 ft) of excavation of the two connection tunnels. Additionally, construction of the permanent plugs within the RWBT will be undertaken. Figure 2 shows the layout of the work.Access to the work through the deep shaft at site 5B was critical to the success of the project. The hoisting system needed to be multi-functional to handle the different types of construction from drill and shoot of the shaft, starter and tail tunnel, the assembly of the tunnel boring machine (TBM), the excavation of the TBM tunnel including the supply of the precast segmental liner, the grouting operations, the installation of the steel interliner pipe and the cast-in-place concrete as well as ingress and egress of personnel. The production of the TBM operations was critical to the schedule of the project. This required a quick cycle for muck haulage and supply of the precast segmental liner in order to keep pace with the excavation time of the TBM. For TBM assembly, components were limited to a maximum weight of 104 t (115 st) for a single lift. Various cranes were analyzed for hoisting, however, none would meet all of the citeria. Therefore, the project team selected a specialized hoisting system designed in house in conjunction with Timberland Equipment Ltd. that consisted of a total of 14 separate hoists and winches with a total of more than 2,833 kW (3,800 hp)."

The mine of the Eureka Standard Consolidated dining Co. is at Dividend, Utah, in the Tintic mining district. It is operated under the same management and controlled by the Antic Standard Mining Co.; the two properties adjoin each other. The Eureka Standard is worked through a vertical shaft; the ore is mined by a stringer-set-and-fill method. One hundred and thirty men were employed in April 1933. The normal daily tonnage is 100 tons; the ore is shipped to the smelter at Garfield, Utah.

In this study, the reduction behaviours of MnO and SiO2containing slags by solid carbonaceous materials was investigated in both small and larger-scale laboratory experiments. Five types of carbonaceous material were investigated: 2 graphites, industrial coke, anthracite and eucalyptus charcoal. The effects of the reductant type/properties on the reduction kinetics, metal composition and metal yield, have been quantified. Results show that the reduction rate is highly dependant on the type of carbon used. It was found that the reductant type significantly influenced the SiO2reduction while it did not seem to have a large effect on the MnO reduction. This may be due to the different CO2and SiO reactivities of the materials.

A necessidade de melhorar as propriedades dos refratários monolíticos para resistir às condições operacionais cada vez mais severas e instáveis das casas de corrida de Alto-Forno tem sido um grande desafio para os fornecedores de refratários de maneira a garantir a segurança dos canais de corrida e sua disponibilidade para operação. Este trabalho apresenta as propriedades de novos concretos refratários Al2O3-SiC-C (aplicados por vibração ou bombeamento/projeção a úmido) desenvolvidos para resistir ao severo mecanismo de corrosão que ocorre na linha de gusa de canais principais e que exige constante atenção dos operadores das casas de corrida. Testes realizados com os novos concretos refratários em canais de corrida principais de diferentes Altos-Fornos de grande produtividade revelaram uma significativa diminuição da velocidade de desgaste do revestimento refratário na linha de gusa oferecendo uma condição operacional segura e confiável às casas de corrida.

"A shallow till sampling program was completed on a 1 km grid over the St . George Batholith in southern New Brunswick. The ""B"" soil horizon was analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, Co, Mo, U and Sb and the heavy minerals from the ""C"" soil horizon were analyzed for W, Sn and A u. The results delineated four of five recorded W occurrences, three of four recorded Mo occurrences, all recorded Cu occurrences and one recorded Au occurrence. The results indicate that shallow till sampling in conjunction with bedrock and Quaternary mapping can inexpensively define exploration targets in terrain similar to that underlain by the St. George Batholith.A similar program was carried out in eastern Ontario involving the analysis of four separates from the till, the ""8"" soil horizon, the -50 mesh fraction, the -250 mesh and the heavy mineral fraction of the ""C"" soil horizon and humus. Also sampling was carried out near known gold occurrences at closer spacings. Regionally, anomalous results from all sample media clearly defined a large auriferous shear zone and associated splays. Over one known showing all media clearly defined the showing and a secondary zone. On the regional scale the heavy mineral fraction gave the best anomaly definition and contrast, but the -250 mesh fraction was found to be the most cost effective for defining exploration targets. For detailed surveys, humus was found to be cost-effective."

"Although diamond mining is a relative newcomer to the Canadian mining industry, with the first diamond mine coming on stream in 1998, Canada is already a significant producer of high quality diamonds. This paper will review diamond production trends and highlight some of the projects currently under development, which have the potential to enhance Canada’s role as a significant diamond producer.Diamond recovery plants generally incorporate well-established mineral processing and recovery techniques, with issues such as product security, cut-off sizes, and diamond preservation becoming important considerations when developing process flowsheets. A diamond processing plant must achieve three key objectives, namely:• Liberation of the diamonds from the host rock;• Separation of the heavy minerals, which include the diamonds, from the host rock;• Recovery of the diamonds from the heavy mineral concentrates.Processing technologies and equipment commonly utilized in diamond processing plants will be reviewed and some of the significant issues associated with each option briefly discussed.Typical process flowsheets will be presented.Finally, an overview of De Beers’ Victor diamond project, located in northern Ontario, will be provided. This potentially significant diamond producer is currently at a pre-feasibility stage of development.DIAMONDS IN CANADAWorld Diamond ProductionCommercial diamond mining commenced in earnest with the discovery of the Kimberley diamondfields in South Africa in the late 1800s, and this resulted in a dramatic increase in the supply of diamonds. As can be seen from figure 1, world diamond production, mainly from South Africa, Angola, Congo, and Namibia, remained relatively constant through the early 1900s until the development of the large Russian kimberlite pipes in the 1950s. Production increased again in the 1960s and 70s with the development of the Botswana mines, but the most significant increase in global production came from the Argyle mine in Australia, which came on stream in 1983 and produced a peak of almost 43 million carats in 1994, representing approximately 40% of the world market. Production from Argyle has since fallen-off as grades have declined and the strip ratio has increased with the deepening of the open pit."

Each generation accepts the developments of the preceding generations without full appreciation of the difficulties that had to be overcome or of the effect of any given development on society. Today, the production of pig iron is the yardstick with which general industrial health and progress are measured. So natural and logical does this seem to us, that it is difficult to picture conditions prior to the fourteenth century when pig iron was unknown. Not only was pig iron unknown but iron or steel could not be melted and poured into castings; all iron and steel articles were forged from sponge iron. All castings, as well as many worked articles, were made of non-ferrous metals or alloys. In many parts of the world, over long periods of time, not only was the annual exchange value of non-ferrous metals greater than that of iron and steel, but their combined tonnage was greater. At present, the value of the pig iron produced in a year is of the same order of magnitude as that of all non-ferrous metals combined; the tonnage of pig iron is, however, about twenty times that of all non-ferrous metals combined. Owing to lack of records, we will probably never know the relative importance of the various metals at all periods in historic times. A certain conclusion is that the iron and steel industry, since the discovery of pig iron and the cheap methods of converting it into steel, has grown at a much more rapid rate than the non-ferrous metal industries. Notwithstanding their fundamental fitness for man's needs, iron and steel owe their importance in no small degree to the low cost of production. The low cost was a result of increased knowledge of the production appliances and of the metallurgical processes. This increased knowledge is the key to our modern industrial civilization. It will remain for future generations to determine whether there is now going on a gradual change toward greater importance of the non-ferrous metals, as compared to iron and steel. The world's pig iron production in 1920 was slightly more than twice what it was in 1890, whereas the non-ferrous metals production in 1920 was about two and one-half times that in 1890. Resource rent taxes are taxes which only become effective at such a time as a pre-determined rate of return has been achieved by an operation. Resource Rent Taxes have from time to time been considered for implementation in bothAustralia and New Zealand. The offshore petroleum industry in Australia is already subject to RRT as is the Roxby Downs (Olympic Dam) Mine in South Australia. Both the mining and petroleum taxation regimes in Papua New Guinea include a resource rent tax component called Additional Profits Tax.   The implications of the current form of additional profits tax for shareholder cash returns are that the tax burden on the operation may suddenly increase at some stage in the life of the mine if and when the threshold level of profitability for the tax to be triggered is exceeded. From that point in time onwards the cash return to the shareholders on the capital invested is greatly diminished. For mining companies in Papua New Guinea, the effective tax rate increases from 35% to 57.75% as a result of the onset of additional profits tax. This tax rate penalty is so severe that there appears to be merit in considering the concept of managing profitability through time rather than purely maximising annual pre-tax profits as is currently the case in most mining operations. This would have the benefit of deferring or perhaps preventing altogether the onset of the tax. One possible method for the effective management of profitability is through the control of average mining grade by cutoff grade manipulation.   Traditional cutoff grade theory has usually considered taxation as a direct cost at a fixed or variable percentage of annual profits. As a result of this most analyses are conducted on a pre-tax basis. If tax is included in analyses it is usually present as a time independent function of gross profit. Additional profits tax is both time, and rate of return dependent and therefore not adequately accommodated by currently accepted cutoff grade theory.   A review has been made of the effects of resource rent taxes on both the investment decision-making process as well as possible development and mining strategies which may be employed by mining companies faced with resource rent taxes. The review includes examples based on the structure of additional profits tax which is levied in Papua New Guinea.

Pike County in the easternmost portion of Kentucky is one of the major coal-producing areas in the eastern Kentucky coal field. The county contains numerous coal beds, many of which are too thin to support mining. The commercially important beds are usually 4 feet or more thick, but selective mining at some places calls for removal of a much thinner section of the bed. The variation in quality of the beds from place to place and the large number of coal beds make correlation uncertain. Samples were collected from 14 different coal beds, of which the Elkhorn group is by far the most important. In addition to the Upper Elkhorn No. 3, Upper Elkhorn No. 2, Upper Elkhorn No. 1, and Lower Elkhorn beds that comprise the Elkhorn group, the Winifrede, Williamson, and Bingham beds constitute the principal coal deposits in Pike County.

More than 111,350 mining and construction industry professionals from throughout the world gathered in Las Vegas, NV, March 19-23 for ConExpo-Con/Agg 2002 and IFPE 2002. The triennial event is the Western Hemisphere’s largest equipment show for the quarrying, aggregates, construction and ready-mixed concrete industries. Despite the difficulties in the world economy, ConExpo-Con/Agg 2002 attracted more than 2,450 exhibitors from throughout the world. This was an increase from the 1,882 exhibitors that were on hand for the 1999show. And this year’s show occupied more than 180,225m2 (1.94 million sq ft) of exhibit space at the Las Vegas Convention Center. This was an increase from the160,900 m2 (1.73-million sq ft) occupied at the 1999event.

The periphery of longwall panels in the Pocahontas No.3 coalbed is characterized by a zone of reduced permeability that inhibits the natural drainage of methane. A residual gas pressure of 105 psig was measured after 1 year in an isolated block of coal measuring 340 by 1,100 feet. The buildup of gas pressure within such large blocks causes methane problems during plowing operations. However, natural drainage holes drilled during development have been found to reduce the gas content of the coal in this coalbed by over 90 percent. The effect of water infusion on dust during plowing operations was investigated using existing methane drainage holes. These holes were cleaned of debris and a pipe was grouted into the hole for water infusion of the panel. Both total and respirable dust levels were reduced by 40 to 79 percent. Water infusion of the panel proved more effective than did the use of a plow-mounted spray system.

Legacy tailings storage facilities exist within operating mine sites across Australia. These tailings storage facilities are often viewed as rehabilitation liabilities but with considered assessment may prove to be a resource. Extraction of such a resource might add value to operations by providing cash flow during the development of new mines; providing supplementary mill feed for existing mines undergoing step changes in operations; and supporting mine closure activities. Hellyer Gold Mines is successfully extracting and reprocessing sub-aqueous material from legacy tailings storage facilities at their Hellyer operation in north-west Tasmania. The Hellyer tailings storage facilities contain poly-metallic material from the Hellyer and Fossey underground deposits dating back to the 1980s as well as material from tailings reprocessing activities by other operators of the Hellyer site. Hellyer Gold Mines is reclaiming sub-aqueous material using cutter-suction dredgers and reprocessing on-site. Hellyer is the only operation of its type in Australia and few such operations exist worldwide. Key learnings around the estimation of a resource for legacy tailings storage facilities have been acquired at Hellyer that can be applied to the assessment of other tailings storage facilities. The application of dredging as a mining method at Hellyer is delivered through collaboration with experts from outside the mining industry under the direction of a mining engineer. Key elements required for the planning and delivery of safe and efficient dredging inside tailings storage facilities have been identified at Hellyer and are presented to provide a road map to the development of other dredging operations.
