The greisen-bordered quartz veins are spatially, temporally and genetically associated with a late Cretaceous granite intruding an early Palaeozoic, limestone-rich formation. Paragenetic data indicate three stages of hydrothermal mineralisation, the first typically in or within 500 m of the granite stock and showing vertical zoning between deeper Mo and higher W, the other two more abundant in the upper and outer parts of the mineralised area. Fluid inclusion and stable isotope data indicate that hydrothermal veins formed over a temperature range of 120-395 degrees C from low-salinity fluids. Early wolframite and molybdenite deposition in stage I occurred at temperatures of 300-395 degrees C from magma-derived, low-salinity, CO2-rich fluid, mainly as a result of fluid boiling and associated CO2 effervescence. Progressively larger volumes of local meteoric water entering the system led to the successive deposition of scheelite in stage I vugs, stage II base-metal sulphides and stage III fluorite-carbonates. Remobilisation of W and its later deposition of scheelite in the outer and shallower portions of the system occurred at 215-275 degrees C and stage II and III mineralisation from lower-temperature fluids that became progressively lighter in stable isotopes. This Department handles all ores prior to blast-furnacing, the object of the operations being to mix the lead-bearing material with fiuxes, eliminate sulphur from the mixture, and produce a homogeneous sintered product which is chemically and physically suitable for treatment in the blast furnaces.During the financial year ended the 30th June, 1937, the tonnage of charge treated was 458,960 tons, containing some 183,470 tons of lead and 8,504,000 oz. of silver.The quantities of the principal components of the charge treated were as follow:-

As the iron ore/magnetite boom gains momentum, it is particularly important to question established past trends and explore the potential of alternative design options. Traditionally, ‘rule of thumb’ methods have been used to size dewatering equipment. Greater consideration needs to be given to technological advancements and specific throughput testing of each ore body type based on innovative developments.This paper will describe how an innovative approach resulted not only in significant savings in capital cost and site work hours but also delivered a truly optimised design for the thickener duty at Karara. Test work also played a crucial role and a comprehensive test work program on the ore samples showed the scale-up benefi ts of new technology in thickener designs. Working closely with the Karara team during the laboratory testing proved the old sizing theories for iron ore/magnetite processing have been superseded with the knowledge and results of the industry’s newest feedwell technology. Increased solids flux and rise rates in the testing process proved very successful, resulting in signifi cantly reduced thickener sizes and lower capital expense.Mechanical design considerations such as removal of underflow and pump access led to a preference for an above-ground thickener confi guration, and the economics of a completefabrication and installation package favoured steel construction for the thickener units.The ultimate choice of the bolted/fl anged tank methodology provides both economic and timely solutions for the site installation including reduced man power and quick and safe site-work. A benefits comparison between this design and other fabrication and installation procedures will also be analysed in the paper.

ACTIVE participation by the United States in the war acted as a stimulant on the Annual Institute Meeting in New York rather than a retardant as feared. Attendance was about 10 per cent under the all-time high reached last year, but considering the number of men who could not possibly come because of active military service and the additional number who are devoting their whole time and effort to turning out vital war materials, the registration was really greater than might have been expected. But all in all the Institute put on a show that taxed the capacity of the Engineering Societies Building as well as the capacity of the visitors to find time to attend everything that promised to be of interest.

Several mineral process modeling and simulation packages are currently available for use in evaluating the performance of alternative process flowschemes. A critical link that has been missing from these packages is the ability to quantitatively model the effect of size reduction on the liberation of the valuable and waste minerals in the ore being processed. Although there have been several approaches taken to this problem over the past 25 years, none has led to a satisfactory conclusion. A technique has been developed for measuring the effective liberation characteristics of magnetic taconite ores, and a program has been constructed which makes use of these liberation characteristics in simultaneously simulating both size reduction and mineral liberation as it occurs in tumbling mills. This is an especially important step in the modeling of magnetic taconite processes, where magnetic rejection of low grade wastes between grinding stages mandates that a predictive capability be available. The current application is specific to magnetic taconite, but it is possible that a similar approach could be used for other types of mineral systems.

The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 3,500 tons of ore per day with an average gold grade of 0.34 opt. The mine has a large horizontal extent of 2,500 feet by 500 feet and a vertical extent of 20 to 200 feet. Based on the characteristics of the ore bodies, a long-hole stope and cut-and-fill mining methods are used at the deposits which are divided into several mining zones. Cemented rock fill (CRF) is used as the backfill in the open stope. CRF design includes the aggregate design, the ratio of cement and fly ash design, and strengths for the long-hole stope and cut-and-fill. In the aggregate design, the particle size distribution is one of the most influential aggregate characteristics in determining how it will perform as a basic backfill material. Gradation helps determine durability, porosity, cement and water requirements, strength, and shrinkage. To cut the backfill cost, fly ash usually is added into the binder to replace some part of cement. However, adding fly ash can affect the strength of the backfill. The reasonable percentage of fly ash is also important for making a good and low cost backfill. Based on the different mining method, the different backfill with different strength is designed. A systematic quality control procedure for aggregate and backfill is followed. After four yeas application, CRF system in Leeville achieved very good results.

Kaolin is mined from extensive sedimentary formations in the eastern Amazon River Basin of Brazil. Production began about 25 years ago from 30 meter thick beds of ultra-fine particle clay of superior viscosity along the Jari River north of the Amazon. Operated by CADAM S.A., capacity now exceeds 750,000 tonnes per year ot high glossing paper coating kaolin product. South of the Amazon on the Capim River are two new operations: Para Pigmentos S.A. and Rio Capim Caulim S.A. The purity , and large coarse plate-shaped particles of these Capim kaolins support production of superior brightness and whiteness paper coating and filling grades. Annual capacities are reported to be 150,000 to 300,000 tonnes each, with expansions planned. Most of Amazon area kaolin production is shipped to western European, Asian, and North American markets.

The aim of this paper is the construction of models of systems with ionic and ionic-covalent bonds (molten salts) using experimental diffraction data and the calculation of their structure and thermodynamic and transport properties. Modelling was performed using algorithm BELION, in which the non-coulomb part of interaction potential between ions in the model was determined by the method of iterative simulation which targeted agreement between calculated and experimental partial pair correlation functions (PPCFs). The ionic charges in salts, which can be fractional, were determined by minimization of internal energy. In this paper, the algorithm BELION is applied for chlorides of alkaline-earth metals. Pair potentials, PPCFs, atomization energies, self-diffusion coefficients and electric conductivity are calculated. The charge of alkaline-earth metals was in the range of 2.0-2.1, slightly increasing from Mg to Ba. Partial pair correlation functions and atomization energies of models agree well with experimental data for MgCl2, SrCl2and BaCl2. "In the early 1970ssteelmakers worldwide were looking forward to many years of expansion and profitability. Huge government investments in Europe, the United Kingdom, Japan, Brazil, and Venezuela were committed in anticipation of growing market s based on long-term OECD forecasts. In 1973 the first OPEC oil shock occurred. Steel demand shrank. Restructuring became the buzz word of the day as billions of dollars in taxpayers' money was poured into eliminating excess capacity and labour. In the United States, where government help was not available, inefficient companies went bankrupt; capacity was cut to 100 million tons from 155 million tons. The industry throughout the industrialized world shrank. By 1979the world economy seemed back on track and a modest degree of optimism could be detected in the international steel fraternity. Then came the second oil shock. By 1982 the industry was in the midst of another shakeout. More bankruptcies, more rationalization, and fewer jobs resulted. In Canada some well-known companies came close to the brink as low prices and high interest rates took their toll. In the light of the turmoil in the steel market over the past 20 years an attempt to forecast the trends through to 2001 is intimidating.However, there are good reasons to be optimistic today about both markets and technology.An economic super power is emerging in western Europe as 1992 draws near. The creation of a single market of 320 million well educated and economically ambitious people has major positive implications for steel demand. The mega projects of the channel tunnel, a European network of high speed railways, and the London docklands are the forerunners of greater things. Still to come is another $200 to $300 billion by the year 2001 in identifiable major projects for highways, railways, airports, water and sewage systems. Add to that the demands of an increasingly affluent population for automobiles, appliances and housing. On top of all that place large increasing demands for electric power and you have a potential beyond anything seen during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1988 the EEC steel industry operated at 90% and in 1989 at 92% of effective capacity. A surge in spot prices indicated that 92% was close to the ceiling. This pace moderated in early 1990 but any slack will probably be taken up rather quickly."

"MANGANESE-SILOCON ALLOYS AS DEOXIDIZERSThe basic open-hearth process for steel mining requires large amounts of oxidized iron for oxidation of the elements carbon, silicon, manganese, and phosphorus which are to be removed from the metal. Some of this oxidized iron (FeO) dissolves in the metal during the refining process, Subsequent to the elimination of the elements named, a considerable amount of dissolved iron oxide must be removed before the metal may be cast into ingot form. The elements generally used, for iron oxide removal, or deoxidation, are silicon, manganese, and aluminum. Silicon and manganese are always alloyed with iron, either singly or in combinations of various compositions. Aluminum generally is used in a commercially pure state and sometimes in complex alloys. A double deoxidizer of manganese and silicon alloyed with iron for furnace deoxidation has been the subject of an extensive cooperative investigation between the United States Bureau of Mines, the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and the Metallurgical Advisory Board. Certain grader of steel, especially low-carbon rimming steels, require a low-carbon deoxidizer to keep the finished steel within the carbon specification after deoxidation. The following notes are, therefore, simply an attempt to ascertain andclearly record the occurrence, properties, and uses of the more important of the rare earths, with a special reference to their commercial values and the industries based upon them.HISTORYIt was the mine manager, Gcyer, of Stockholm, who, in 1788, first drew attention to a black mineral which had been found in a quarry near Roslagen, in Sweden. In 1805 Klapproth received some specimens of this mineral, which he declared to be a newmineral. Subsequently Gadolin, professor of chemistry at Abo, analyzed the same mineral, and determined the presence of an unknown earth resembling alumina and lime. He named the mineral ytterbite, and afterwards gadolinite. Klapproth has alsothe merit of having detected (1804) another rare earth, which he named ochroit-earth, found in the Bastnas mine, near Riddarhyttan, in Wcstmannland, Sweden. Keywords: sinter, characterization, agglomeration, iron ore Iron ore sinters are the main burden of blast furnaces for pig iron production. The evaluation of these agglomerates is very important due to their properties affect indirectly the productivity and costs of production of the steel industry. In the sintering plants, the standard procedure of sinter assessment has been carried out by particle size control, bulk chemical analyses, tumbler and/or shatter tests and determination of reduction degradation and reducibility indexes. Microscopy techniques have just been applied to characterize sinters produced in pilot conditions, however, these techniques, the classical ones and the less traditional, allow enhancing the industrial sintering process assessment. For investigation of the phases, microstructures and fabric, reflected-light and scanning electron microscopy(backscattered electrons images) were used; for micro analytical chemical examination, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry; for Kikuchi patterns registers, electron backscattering diffraction. In addition to the microscopy techniques, the magnetic behavior was depicted by means of magnetic susceptibility measurements. Iron ore sinters are made up by hematite, magnetite, silicoferrite of calcium and aluminium and silicates. These phases develop either during sintering or, in some proportion, represent remnants of ores and fluxes; this is the case of some hematite and Mg-bearing silicate, respectively. From the magnetic susceptibility results, three different behaviors were determined, which are directly related to the magnetiteproportion in the samples. The phase association and proportion, the sintering conditions andthe quality assessment are some features appraised by such procedures, which reveal themagnitude of this proposal in sintering plants.

The EMEW® cell has been developed to overcome a number of inherent limitations in conventional electrowinning technology, particularly the high cost and restricted process windows characteristic of conventional hardware. The technology has been widely demonstrated to achieve high performance for various metals under chemical conditions well outside the limits required for efficient operation of conventional cells. This process flexibility offers significant opportunities for cost savings. in recovery of zinc from primary and secondary sources. The EMEW® technology is now available on a fully engineered basis, as a versatile commercial alternative to conventional electrowinning hardware. Application of the EMEW® cell for recovery of secondary zinc material offers significant advantages to the recycling industry. For example, a selective caustic leach can be used where there are high levels of iron or other contaminants in the target material. The reagent requirement is minimal as most of the caustic is regenerated in the bell and zinc dust that may be required for electrolyte purification is produced in the cell. A high purity zinc powder or cathode is produced in the cell. In the case of acidic zinc electrolytes, the cell is capable of operating over a much wider range of operating conditions than a conventional cell.

The theme of this paper is the development of-the project feasibility study which includes discussion of the work which is carried out in preparing the project feasibility study, the necessary evaluations and structures that are employed to ensure that not only does the feasibility study itself stand up to scrutiny and is sound, but also that the investment the company is proposing to develop, "the project", is an investment decision which will represent good returns to the company. This theme is particularly relevant when there are competing divisions within the company and only limited cash resources are available to make the correct investment decision. Thus various potential investments may be evaluated against each other to determine which project will be given the go ahead for development. This paper will particularly focus on the various investment analysis techniques that are used and discuss the work that is required in preparing the project feasibility study and specifically the interaction of the project team members and the thought process that must be undertaken to complete the project feasibility study. Finally comments will be made on tax planning issues particularly with respect to taxation of gold production to be introduced in January 1991. Some ideas are presented which may help and possibly improve the financial position of the projects being reviewed. Further, it is suggested that the thought process which goes with the financial engineering aspects of a resource project can be widened to take account of taxation issues and tax planning to ensure the rise of the project feasibility and hence the decision to proceed to development by the project sponsors.

This is one of a series of papers on placer mining in the western United States. The author has endeavored to give a general outline of the available placer deposits in Boise County, Idaho, together with a description of current practices and the recovery costs of the principal producers. The paper is based on a field examination by the author in May and June 1937. Boise County (fig. 1) is in the southwestern part of Idaho. It has a maximum length of 60 miles, a maximum width of 42 miles, and an area of approximately 1,600 square miles.

As part of the Boston Harbor clean up project, the new 1,000 mgd Deer Island Sewerage treatment plant includes ten 240 feet high egg-shaped "residuals" tanks. Contract documents called for these structures to be supported on 2,600 sixteen inch concrete filled pipe piles. The project site is underlain by highly variable glacial and marine deposits. Subsurface conditions vary from one extreme where firm glacial deposits exist at subgrade to the other extreme where 70 feet of medium stiff clays overlying weathered bedrock must be dealt with. The most common profile consisted of 15-20 feet of sands, 20-40 feet of marine clays, and 20-60 feet of stratified glacial deposits (commonly called tills) overlying Argillitic bedrock. Post bid redesign work, initiated as a cooperative effort between the owner and the general contractor, demonstrated that an $8 million savings could be realized if high capacity 48 inch diameter caissons replaced the specified pipe piles. A highly unusual arrangement of having the general contractor and specialty subcontractor providing input to the owner's engineering team allowed the redesign work to proceed on a "fast-track" schedule.

This paper illustrates the use of variography and moving average plots as an aid to analysing variations in the process that can be used to direct the improvement efforts. The hydrometallurgical processes used in manganese metal production consist of sequential unit operations that include milling and reduction of manganese ores. Leaching of the reduced ore, is followed by solid-liquid separation, residue disposal, solution purification and electrowinning of manganese metal completes the process. The nearly 250 integrated process control loops rely on reports of pH, flow pressure, level, temperature and chemical analyses. Metallurgical accounting, reconciliation and process control is achieved through monitoring of the chemical and mass balances within the manganese reduction plant, requiring approximately 50 000 analyses of solids, powders and liquids each month. The largest numbers of samples are taken in the cell house. Changes and variations monitored by sample statistics ensure that the manganese products comply with predetermined specification limits. Optimising the information-value of the approximately 50 000 samples in the manganese plant is carried out in tandem with ongoing process optimisation. Variographic analysis of daily sampling data suggests that the cyclical behaviour evident in the moving average plots is only a reflection of random residual variability and not a reflection of true underlying variability related to cyclical phenomena. Low resolution in the variogram of daily sampling data masks the short-range variability that emerges when hourly data are analysed. Hourly samples collected over a 39-day period (giving 941 sample data), helped identify short-range cycles in the process. The relative distribution of variability for daily sample intervals, indicate that 57 per cent arises from V[0], 18 per cent from V[process] and 16 per cent from random residual variation. V[0] includes all the uncontrolled sampling error arising from a poor sampling protocol, the fundamental error (FE), the grouping and segregation errors (GSE), the delimitation error (DE), the extraction error (EE), etc. This confirms the suspicions regarding the suboptimality of the sampling protocol and the way it is implemented. The absence of long-term trends in the leach suggests that short-term variation (less than one day) dominates the process. While the control charts indicate that the overall processes are maintained above the lower specification limits and the target values, there is nevertheless a considerable amount of variability in the system that overhangs the processes and threatens to impact them negatively. Although the variability in the leach is above the prescribed limits, the volatility is a matter of concern because it seems to be uncontrolled. The comparison of the various sources of variability in data collected on an hourly basis suggests that the short-term random variability (V[0]) accounts for almost 50 per cent of the variability in the process. The main source of this variability is due to errors in the sampling protocol and is probably related to the size of the fundamental error (FE), the grouping and segregation errors (GSE), the delimitation error (DE), the extraction error (EE), etc. Remediation of FE and GSE will probably lead to a reduction in V[0], whereas V[process] could be mitigated by reducing the biases associated with DE and EE in particular.
